I love the fat sound of the heavy strings best but, I am a smaller player, use a versatile Gibson ES 345 and find the lighter strings work best for me for that purpose. I've used Thomastik Flats on several guitars and basses (in appropriate gauges for different ones) for decades now. They are expensive, but also last a very long time with reasonable care so still deserve 'value-for-money' rating. Superb feel when playing, and to my ears and taste (bit of a jazzer) very good sound too. In 20 years of playing, I've broken plenty of strings right out of the package. The other reviewer must not change his strings much. I discovered flat wound strings several years ago, and I will never go back. Thomasik flat wounds are infinitely more comfortable on the fingers than standard strings. The first time I played them, I got a perfect vintage 60s sound that I had been trying to get out of other strings for a lifetime. Use them on a Strat and my SG. I went through several different brands and gauges when I began experimenting with flatwound strings several years ago. I settled on Thomastik Infeld as the best brand and this as the best gauge for my needs. This brand is definitely worth paying more for if you want to play with flats. I have had the same set on my primary guitar for more than 3 years and I really didn't even need to change them yet when I bought these ones. I use them on my ES-175. I have Seth Lover pickups, which are a bit brighter compared with Gibson pickups so I needed really dark sounding strings. These strings do the work very well. The strings are very well balanced. In fact, I don't think I have ever experienced more balanced strings than these. Yes, they are very expensive; however, the touch is fantastic and the sound is amazing. For my ears, they last for a bit more than 2 weeks before the sound goes away… however, if someone is playing a lot solos, one can keep 'em longer. They will actually sound a bit darker when they get old on solos but the sound on chords will lose its definition.Loopio
I have always played D'Addario Chromes on my Ibanez AF155 and have always tweaked for the tone that I could never find… hours of tweaking! (I have actually considered selling the guitar for this reason.) After some investigation, I tried a set of these strings and can not believe the difference. Instead of tweaking to find an acceptable tone, I play guitar. Wonderful classic warm jazz tone with your tone pots on the low end to an almost "acoustic guitar full" as you set the tone pot higher. The tone is rich and full. The feel is much smoother than the Chromes, they feel great. The strings are more consistent in output from string to string. I Love Rhythm and blues, jazz and swing. But I also like folk music and great C&W riff lines. To be honest, I have only been using these strings for about three weeks but I like them so much that I plan to use them on most of my instruments. So far, In my opinion, these strings are clean and crisp and they have a very satisfying tone even at higher volumes; and, at the present time, they appear to be pretty flex-able and easy on the fingers. I have a used 2005 hollowbody Cort Yorktown. I tried D'Addario ECG23 (10-48 "chromes" flatwounds). They were nice, but for this guitar, they were too bright, at least on the treble strings. I put on these DR flatwounds (11-48) and immediately heard the difference. The tone was mellower, including (especially!) on the treble strings. Don't ask me why. After all, the high E is just .001 inch heavier, but the consistent softened jazz sound was there, from low end to high end. Guitars differ in variables (woods, pickups, etc), so all I can say is that for my guitar (laminate maple back and sides, laminate spruce top and original humbuckers), DR 11-48 flatwounds did the trick. Will stick with these from now on. (By the way, both brands have a wound 3rd string, but DR's is 22 instead of 20. Go figure!) At one point, I was even thinking of replacing the neck pickup. So I have this "practice Axe" that I use to save fret wear on my expensive guitars, I got a cheap used Squire Strat (HSS) and since it set up just the way I like it I play it most. My first set of these CM flatwound 9-42 was a NOTICABLE improvement in tone to the point that I can now say this guitar has its own "voice". I'm a blues/funk/rock player and I can hear the frequency of the notes clearer so I bend to just the right vibration. I purchased these Curt Mangan strings because the Thomastic-Infeld Jazz Swings that I usually use were out of stock. The CM stings are somewhat less expensive that the T-I strings, but are more expensive than many other brands of flat wound strings. The CM strings sound good and are well balanced. They have a brighter sound than other flat wound strings that I have used. The packaging says they have a "smooth, silky feel". I disagree, compared to other flat wound strings, especially T-I and D'Addario Chromes ,which are silky smooth, the CMs are somewhat rough.ras1500

I always hated the noise of roundwound strings, but I admit that nickel plated flatwound are not suitable for most genres. If you like the smoothness of flatwounds but you're not Pat Martino and still need some harmonics above your fundamental tone, these are the strings for you. In short, these strings have good output, a (not overly) bright tone, they do not oxidize easily and are suitable for those people allergic to nickel. They are not the cheapest strings on the market, but keep in mind that they will last more than common pure nickel or nickel plated strings. Another note: even if I got a super light gauge (9-42) the high E seems to have a good resistance to bending and does not snap easily like most of the other strings I tried.
I've tried many different flatwound strings, including the expensive Infeld, Mangans, and the always great D'addario Chromes. I have to say that these are every bit as good as those I mentioned, with a much nicer price! If you are looking for Flats in lighter gauges, definitely give these GHS strings a try!shovelheadsam66

Overall: Tried these out on a Gretsch Pro Jet and the combination was a game changer for me. Took a minute to get used to the feeling, but now I won’t play anything else on that guitar. Rich, warm tone with a fair amount of sparkle. Especially good for jazz chording and rhythm playing. The price is made up for in longevity. These strings sound great after weeks of heavy use.
D'adddario are quality strings.I have used TI in the past. and DR flatwound. The TI swing 12's were great sounding but expensive. The DR flatwound 11's were good also . I prefer the gauge on the Dr 11's. Recently I went back to the Daddario chromes. To get the guage I wanted I purchased Chromes 10's, replaced the 1'st string with an 11 and the 3rd with a 22.(Equivalent to the DR 11's) At this time they sound great. Quality sounding strings and the price is not bad compared to TI and DR. I have also used the Chromes 11's, but have found the gauges in this pack to be a little heavier than what I was used to. I'll probably stick to Chromes 10 and replace the first with an 11 and third with a 22, As far as tone the Chromes are brighter than the DR. The first electric guitars I ever got up close and personal with were owned by Country-Western groups and Popular Music bands. As I recall all of their guitars had flatwounds on them… When I finally decided that Rock Music and the guitar was for me it was 1965. Most everything was round wound then for a more wild raucous sound… cheaper too…. flatwounds were out of fashion. Well here it is all these years later and D'Addario still make flatwounds. I began a renewed interest in learning some of the older sounds I heard as a kid, so decided to try these on a Stratocaster. D'Addario is a great string and I am looking forward to the experience… my only complaint is that Musicians Friend does not carry the Ultra light set in 9 gauge which I would prefer on the Strat. As described on the package, these are primarily jazz guitar strings. I play a Benedetto Manhattan Custom 7 that was originally strung with round-wound 12-72 strings. After going through a few sets, I was looking for a slightly lighter feel and mellower sound. The typical 7-string sets with unwound third strings and lowest strings in the 50s felt like rubber bands and did not produce the sound I wanted. D'Addario chrome flat wound strings have the sound I want while allowing a relatively low action without buzzing. The strings start out mellow and hold their tone throughout most of their life. They will eventually sound dull (not necessarily a bad thing – listen to Tal Farlow). When intonation begins to suffer, it's time to replace them. I do not recall breaking a string. The majority of my playing is finger-style in the George Van Eps tradition and these strings are great for that application as well as comping and single-string work. They sound great purely acoustically as well as amplified. If bending notes is a major feature of your style, you probably will not be happy with these strings. If you are fortunate enough to own a seven-string jazz guitar and want a classic jazz sound, these strings will suit your instrument and style of playing quite well. They are practically the only game in town unless you prefer piecing together sets from individual strings.Mike H
These strings have proven to be the best on the market. Flatwounds are the most under-rated string ever, and D'addario chromes are the best of the best. They are very warm, very mellow, so if you play extreme metal like I do, you will have to tweak your pre-eq tone a bit to get the same "bright" sound from roundwound strings, but this is easily achieved with a treble booster or a pre eq with some of the bass turned down a little and some mids and highs turnd up a little. Once you've done that, these strings are RAZOR SHARP and virtually all string chirp is eliminated. They're "tighter" feeling than rounds so they stay put when you're tremolo picking. If you want to do artificial harmonics, they work well on these strings, but you have to be precise. Also, pick slides work well, but they're a bit "softer" sounding than on rounds… The few adjustments you have to make in your tone to compensate is a very small price to pay for a string that lasts forever, cleans up your sound, and eliminates string chirp… I recommend these to every guitar player I know.Manos
I bought these seven strings for a six string guitar 'cause they were the only ones I could find flat wound and not for a bass. I was concerned that the tone would be flat too, but it's not they sound warm and mellow, perfect for jazz and classic rock and blues. I can finally make the slides in "Blackbird" sound right. These strings are probably the closest thing to vintage strings available if you are into that old school 50s jazz sound. They are a bit stout for my hands even when set low, but no question they have great tone. Big and deep with a nice brightness to them. Check out some old records to hear that sound. Many jazzers like Mundell Lowe, Barry Galbraith and George Barnes were not playing the dark and rolled off sort of sound we associate with jazz now. These strings remind me of those aforementioned sounds the most. They aren't perfectly polished smooth but I think that is part of their sound.Aaron
These flat wound strings are pretty light as far as flats go but I really like them. I put them on one of my Fender Jaguars and I love the tone. I will say you should probably stretch these a good bit before regularly playing them but either way they're great and are very good quality as expected with Pyramid strings. For my jag, it really mellowed that super sharp brightness just enough to where I like it. I mostly play the Jag on the neck pickup anyways.Antonio

I put them on an old Jazz Bass and I'll be darned, now it sounds more like a P Bass lol. Feel amazing on the fingertips. Nice smooth sound. Takes away that plucky, string-noise thing from a Jazz Bass (unless you want that sort of thing, of course). I don't have super top of the line flatwounds to compare to, but these were an affordable price, by a brand name, and I like them so far.Gidgey
I have been using them for many years, I previously used D'Addario which are also great, but for me the Fenders are the best flatwound string available. I like ML, 50-100. I don't like thin trebly G strings or thick flubby Es so the closer gauges suit me. I use them on a Maton JB4 1980 fretless and a Maton JB4 2013 fretted reissue and they suit both. Ta lots for being the only place in Oz to have a set. The attached photo shows my JB4 with a well-worn set of 9050MLs at work in the Adelaide Fringe in 2017.Dave T
Where to begin with these? The price? Very reasonable for flats. The quality? D'Adario makes these so it's as good as it gets really. The sound? Glorious. These things have a bit of growl, plenty of punch, and are quite round for flats. However they still have the huge fundemental of flats. I have used Chromes, these are totally different and way better. For the record I don't like Chromes; these are my favorite string. It's hard to really place them, I'd say they walk a nice balance between a modern string like the EB Cobalts (which sound thinner and almost plasticy on the high end but are undeniably very roundwound like) and LaBellas which I'd call a more thumpy string. All that said I've only used EB Cobalts, LaBella, and 9050MLs for about 3 months. None of them have had major sound changes, though my LaBellas are dealing with a really bad nut on my Jazz bass that's effected the balance of their sound. And finally the feel? Yup. They feel like flats. Perhaps a bit sticky at first but that wears off and then it's just real nice, smooth wire. Tension is perfectly fine, I prefer higher tension strings and find these adequate but wouldn't complain with a bit more. So really in the end I guess I'm saying if you want a great string that gives all the brightness you'd ever need in a band but without all that awful string noise and flab of rounds get these. If you want to get funky they will, but if you're into that huge thump LaBellas are where you need to look.guitardict

These are installed on a Gretsch short scale. They have a great smooth feel, tension with balanced volume and warm sound. They don't rattle with loose tension like most shortscale strings. I'm just sorry I didn't try the Rotosound Trubass decades ago. I finally ordered them from Strings and Beyond and l will be ordering more for my other basses. As far as Rotosounds claim to emulate an upright l will say they give you a rich warm sound usable in a lot of musical styles. When installing these strings you may have to widen the nut slots so the strings will not bind and allow them to sit correctly. Very, very comfortable strings to play. I have only had these strings on for about a week, so I cannot attest to their longevity. However, right out of the package, they have had an excellent upright like tone that is perfect for the types of roots music I like to play. I like to play with a slightly high action and these strings seem to be made for that. I have not experienced any of the hum sometimes associated with tapewound strings. My pickups are kind of bright, and these strings helped balance my tone with their darkness. Overall, I am very satisfied and would recommend them to anyone who likes to play country/blues/americana type music.Kris
This is my second set of Monel flats, but my first encounter with their short-scale set. I put them on my EB-0. As others have mentioned (and maybe this doesn't apply to your bass), the silk wrapping at the knob end extends over the place the string touches the bridge. It requires scraping part of the silk away so you can get a metal-touching metal. Again, this may not matter to you; the EB-0, however, produces a mellow tone already and anything that softens that tone (like the wrapping) makes it more difficult to tease even a little crunch out of the instrument. Not a big deal, but an unnecessary step for me to have to do this when it would be a simple matter to use less silk at the factory and give us ready to use strings out of the bag. Other than that, I like Monel strings — they are strong and reliable — and would buy them again to put on a standard scale bass.Offhis Rocker

The search is over. I've tried Ernie Ball, Chromes, and Thomastik and each and every one of these had aspects that I did not like. Either there was too much brightness, little balance, too much mids, bad feel of the strings, or overall tone that did not hit the sweet spot. Mind you those are also quality strings, but they do not shine like these Fender 55's. The search is simply over. The balance is just there. You don't have overwhelming frequency peaks with these strings because they sound even across the spectrum. Ernie Ball is sticky feeling and too bright for my style (which is amazing for some people, Im very impressed with Ernie Ball as well it just doesnt suite my style, these are almost tied with Fender), Chromes are peaky in the mids, and Thomastiks are too flabby and 'tubby' sounding. This is my top recommendation for strings and I think roundwound players should give them a shot.Bass hobbyist
These are long scale pure nickel round wound strings. They sound great; warm, mellow, but still well defined. Very old school. I use them on all my basses; long (34) and short (30.5) scale. The only caveat for using them on short scale basses, is that the larger diameter (low E) may not fit in the center hole of the tuning peg. In that case, just be sure to leave enough of the smaller diameter "core" to fit into the center hole, then wind the rest around the peg. Okay, I am a new player and this is my first set of flat wounds. I was wanting to try flat wound strings for a while.I was curious about how they would sound and play. I know professional players who have shared their recommendations with me, and read review from other players on sites such as "Talk Bass". The price was right so I took a shot. I play a Squier Jazz 4 string, and an Ibanez 305 5 string in our band Soylent Dream. When I got my flats I had to wait a couple of days to put them on my Squier. I was too busy playing to change and break 'em in. What I liked when I took them out was that the ends had different colors on them to make them fool proof to put on. The green silk ends were in pretty good shape. When I put them on my 4 string Squier, I was instantly blown away. If you've never played flats before, it's different. The string feel like silk thread under your fingers. The tone and shape of the sound is warmer and richer. Some round wounds feel a little too bright and almost pitchy and cold. This is different. There was no deadening or flatting out in the mids and highs that I thought there might be. I found they were still very crisp. The set I ordered was 105 to 50 and they are stiffer then a round wound. But after a little playing and getting them broken in they hold tune and can be bent and hammered pretty hard. When you first play them you have to get used to how easily your fingers slide, and you can hit on the fret wire and miss your notes getting a buzz. They can take a beating. I am a finger style player, not a picker. The style of music I play is heavy psychedelic rock. Though I am influenced by guys like Steve Harris and Geezer Butler, but am also a big fan of 70's soul and reggae so BB Dickerson and "Family Man" Barret are huge influences too. For me these flats are amazing. The sound fits my style of playing and I have to say, I want to try these on my 5 string.

Everything good you've heard about these bass strings rings true. They sound terrific, are a joy to play, easy on your fingers, last a very long time plus enhance the tone and playability of just about any bass guitar you own. I am a definite fan of TI Flats and urge anyone who hasn't yet but is thinking about trying a set to do so. However, here's the not-so-good side of this brand of strings. They are expensive! Excessively so in my book and by the looks of things are continuing to rise in price. Does the cost justify the benefit? The only real and unique quality that TI Jazz Flats have over any other brand of bass flatwound strings I've played is, they are truly kind to your fingers. With plenty of give this is the only flat bass string I've used that after extended play don't hurt my fingers.. If it were only tone I was going after, and really wanted that vintage vibe on my Fender or other type of bass, I'd go with Fender Flats which to my ear sound a bit better overall and at about 1/4th the price are unbeatable. As with everything else, there are trade-offs. I've been playing for over 45 years and in that time have burned through a many a set of strings. TI Jazz Flats are a definite winner for those that are into the vintage side of bass guitar tone and want a string that is long lasting plus go easy on your chops. I recommend them for now but am keeping a watchful eye on their price. Enough Already!Rick
I really like the sound! One of a kind. Low mid/mid focussed, very musically sounding strings. They bark and cut trough a four piece band (one guitarist and a loud drummer) pretty good. But beware, theses are very flexible strings and if you are looking for stiff strings and really dig in…maybe you should skip these. Or, try to adept and change your right hand force of playing. And when you do… you’ll love them. They’re on my Fender Original 60’s P-bass (stock). Good luck!
Best flats i’ve ever purchased. These will be living on my bass for years to come! I have found that a lot of cheaper flatwounds tend to have an ugly, scoopy character in the midrange- whereas these guys are really well balanced. Clarity and tone across the board is great, E sings clear. I had to adjust my playing a little as the tension is pretty low at first, but as they’ve settled, they’ve firmed up a little and proven to be very comfortable. This is a set of strings made to live on the instrument for years, and as they settle in on the bass, they sound better and better. Would absolutely reccomend!Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.

These are nice strings, but be warned they are shorter scale and with most 5 string basses these just won't be long enough. I tried them on my G&L L-2500 and they were just a little to short. I bought these strings to use on an 80s ESP fretless. I put them on, tuned it up played through for a few minutes. Put the guitar on the stand. Next day went to tune it an BOOM G string broke. The previous stings had been on the guitar a long time so it's not the bridge. The strings just suck.EK
Nickel wraps over steel hex core, string to string they are bright and balanced in feel and tone. I like the EB Slinky 50-105 for down tuning a 4 string bass a half step. They don't feel floppy, they intonate properly and are consistent in great quality. They sound warm and shiny when new then mellow evenly over a long time of use. Boil them and get a couple more gigs out of them.matt4717
