Best Dvd Guitar Lessons For Beginners (2024 Update)

I am a teacher. This has everything I need. I make copies of certain pages again and again to give to students: scales, chords, etc. Some of this will be a bit much for a beginner, like the pages on intervals, the pages of all the chords written out including 9ths, 11ths and 13ths. There are parts of some of the books I end up not using at all, and other parts of the books I use every day, so overall it has been a great purchase.sequoiawillow

"For the beginning guitarist" my eye. The teachings are so fast you can't pick up on anything. This DVD is for someone who has played and acoustic guitar for years but is just now wanting to learn on an electric. There is so much assumption it's pathetic. This is definitely NOT recommended for beginners. The only tidbit that was slow enough for a beginner, were three tracks for practicing the basic major chords A, D, E, and G but you can do that on your own.blackolive3374

I bought this when I first started learning how to play. It teaches you all of the basics and some really cool riffs and solos. The video is broken down into sections. The first talks about all of the notes on the neck and basic chords and power chords. The other sections shows you how to play different styles like blues, country, rock, ect. The lessons are excellent and very easy to understand. I learned a lot of cool riffs watching this video and it also taught me some cool solos. This is great for beginners especially if you dont have the time to take lessons.Beezy

I bought this DVD last year-and it taught me a lot. In only minutes, I was playing three or four chords and making simple songs from them. The lessons do tend to jump around somewhat, but if you take your time and learn the lessons in order, you will be playing in no time. I especially liked the tour of the Fender plant in Corona,Ca. Keith Wyatt also shows how to take care of your guitar and change the strings properly.Another interesting part is where he demonstrates distortion and a few pedal effects. Overall, I think this is a great DVD to start guitar with. There are a lot of different pages and chapters to explore at your own pace, without a teacher breathing down your neck. I bought this DVD as a gift for a friend just starting to play guitar. Kieth Wyatt is a great guitar teacher, already have several other books and media, so I knew this DVD would be a good bet for anyone beginning. I watched most of the DVD before I gave her the gift and was impressed by what I saw. Just wish this DVD was around when I started playing guitar,(1969)it would have increased my guitar learning process by at least 2 years, no kidding! Kieth Wyatt has a real gift for being both an accomplished guitar player himself, as well as an encouraging guitar teacher. If your thinking of learning to play guitar; save yourself some of the trial and error trauma of trying to learn to play on your own and just buy this DVD; you can thank me later. tbadgertbadger

The topics covered can easily allow a complete novice to get up to the level of competent player in about 6-8 months, depending on the individual. Inside of the first month, you will learn to read music in first position, and you'll continuously learn music theory. At about the half-way through point, you'll learn finger-picking techniques, then move on through different genres. I had several years of lessons and studied music seriously for 2 years, and this really solidifies a lot of concepts for me and very clearly explains the basics which I never fully grasped. What's also nice is that there are additional bonus videos which explain some of the Gibson history and manufacturing techniques, so that as you learn to play you get exposure to some other guitar knowledge as well. All in all, for the money, it's the best organized and produced video training tool I've seen in over 20 years of playing. I bought this to help me become a better teacher, and I will gladly recommend it to anyone I teach!Pascal_h

Most of the dvd is taken up with really beginner stuff, like tuning up and chords. The real meat of the dvd is Dexter playing songs in the style of famous guitarists like Brian Setzer, Eddie Cochran, Scotty Moore, etc. These songs come off almost more like Dexter showing off rather than teaching how to play them. Still, there are some nice licks to be learned from this, so it's not a total waste. I just feel I should have gotten more for my money.nabiman

This video missed the mark and was not easy as stated. It was a long and cumbersome way for someone to learn lead guitar. Even later in the video, the teacher said that he went beyond the easy way when he touched on some areas that were beyond the intended scope of the video.1security2

I'm one of those players that learned bits and pieces along the way and built up a style that while passable in many areas is sorely lacking in others, including some fundamental skills. I love the blues and wanted to become a more competent blues player- able to play different "bluesy" chords and riffs and improvised solos. This is a great DVD for building a basic foundation and working knowledge of that framework. You won't become a blues master from this DVD but it certainly starts you in the right direction and helps to form a basis from which you can develop and build on to. The lessons are clear and slow and easy to follow. The content is very well selected, thought-out and presented. If you learn everything in this DVD you will be well on your way AND if you already know something about playing guitar it will maybe help fill in some gaps or reinforce a few things. I give it four stars for good content and low price (value) but it misses the five-star mark for a few reasons: the very first lesson is about getting your "tone" which involves amp settings (fair enough) and "effects" you can use- which turns into a commercial for a specific effects manufaturer located somewhere in Germany. Several pedals with several settings each are demonstrated to show you how to get that "blues tone" that you apparently can't get with the amp alone- which is a nice amp for blues- no pedals needed. Curiously, no mention about the kind of guitar to use is made- guess they didn't get paid for that. Seems like the effects pedals for a begining blues player should be last thing considered given the basic nature of these lessons. But it is clearly about the money, and they at least don't try to hide that fact and they get it out of the way relatively quickly. Also, tabs are shown at the bottom of the screen as the instructor plays along- however, as the song progresses, each new measure is presented exactly as the first note of the new measure is played. This makes it hard to read ahead and anticipate the changes. Finaly, as the instructor demonstrates various chords, he demonstrates and plays D6 chord in a song even though he calls it a D7. Call me picky but a "pro" instructor should know his chords- or at least go back and overdub the corect chord name. These are the only reasons I didn't give it five stars. In all fairness I haven't totally completed the DVD so there may be other quirks- but over all for the price, this is a very good instructional DVD for anyone looking to dip into blues guitar playing.Skybiscuit

this DVD is amazing. It has play along tabs at the bottom of the page, still sheet music in bonus features, and you can play all 5 blues songs and the 2 solos and slow, medium, and fast paces. Worth every penny!Richard-RyB-0
