Best 8 Inch Guitar Speaker (2024 Update)

I put this in an old Vox VT15 Pawn shop find. It worked well for a few years but it konked out, and I didn't want to spend a ton on a little practice amp. This little speaker did the trick. I really think I'm getting better tones out of this speaker than the speaker that it came with. I only replaced the speaker a little over a month ago, but so far, I feel like I gave my amp an upgrade. I did not expect that.DeadWeasel

Sound: I finally upgraded from the rigged up home stereo, and headphones. That Bass is so clean. It doesn't rattle my windows, or walls, or anything for that matter. The sound stays inside the speakers. That's always been one of my biggest problems with Bass. It travels and vibrates everything, kind of annoying and distracting when your hear stuff rattling WITH your music. This is my first pair of studio monitors. Not speakers but monitors. Improvise and make due with what you have until you're able to upgrade right? I've had some gnarly sound systems, but never any actual studio monitors until I got these. Honestly they're perfect. They are the perfect monitors for the home studio. Features: I love the digital eq parameter on the back of each monitor. It allows ultimate flexibility for dialing in the sound exactly how you want it. The general aesthetic of it is pretty dope too. They also have an app for iphone/android so its literally made for anyone who's anyone. I love that universal compatibility. It simplifies a lot. Ease of Use: It was pretty self explanatory. For being my first set of monitor speakers all I did was unbox them, hook them up to my interface, cranked them on, dialed in the sound. Boom done! It doesn't get any easier. Quality: You can tell they took their time engineering these speakers. They're very well crafted. I see me using these for several years before I even think about getting another pair. It's got an 8 inch speaker, and a little 1 inch tweeter. Don't let that fool you. These speakers were much bigger than I expected. All the sound stays inside the speaker. It makes a huge difference when it comes to canceling out all the excess noise& vibrations. Windows, stuff on shelves, doors, etc. Very well crafted. Value: The price is fair. In my honest opinion. I wouldn't say they're overpriced, and they're definitely not cheap. Thanks to zounds, guys/girls like me can get their hands on some amazing equipment. The Wow Factor: I didn't NEED the speakers, but I was getting tired of just my headphones. Sometimes I can spend all day in my studio, especially when im off work. Or half a day at the least. After a while those headphones start to hurt and become uncomfortable on the tops of my ears. I generally just wanted to upgrade my studio.Of course I love the general aesthetic of the speakers too. They seriously look bad a$$ just sitting there on my desk with all of my gear. It looks very nice. Gives me more of that "studio feel" and it feels good. It's nice to finally have the option of headphones or speakers. And not just speakers, but speakers that were specifically made for this kind of stuff. Overall: These speakers are the SH!T!!!! They sound so good and they're much bigger than I expected. Clean bass. Literally nothing vibrates or rattles. All that Bass and sound stays inside the speakers. Did I mention that they sound amazing? Shipping was extremely fast. I had them 1 day after ordering. Super happy with these krk8s. I got 1 step down from the krk 10-3. I just need to get my hands on the sub now. This is the prefect size for a home studio. The eq on the back of each monitor is an awesome addition as well, so you can dial in that sound just right. Krk did amazing with these. I can see why they're universally loved. There's nothing to dislike about them. 10/10 perfect studio monitors. You won't be disappointed. I spent a lot of time to read and watch reviews on these monitors before deciding to purchase them from Andertons who offered them in the best price around for an overseas customer. They were replacing a pair of Yamaha HS80m (yes, this is not a typo!) Due to moving to a smaller place, I needed to downsize and replace my big monitors with something much more compact that would still produce decent quality sound. The plan is to pair them with a small sub (Eris sub8). What can I say about these small beauties! No hiss at all, except you stick your ear to the twitters, something that HS80M is not famous for. Sound wise, I put them next to the Yamahas and was alternating between the 2 pairs. Yamahas had of course more low end and depth due to the larger woofer, but I could now hear an annoying boost in middle / middle high bands that made them sound a bit plasticky compared to the RP5 G4's. The G4's on the other hand, sounded more natural/neutral, less-fatiguing for longer sessions and very nice for regular listening apart from mixing work. What I hear is in line with the results of the Audio Science Review tests. Their looks are great, now upgraded with KRK grills, and their construction looks very strong and long-lasting (time will show of course). Super happy with my purchase, Yamahas are already gone and I am waiting for my sub8 to complete my new dream studio 🙂Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.

Forget everything you know about the KRK Rockits. The G3's are critically panned and most pro audio customers worth their salt have steered CLEAR of the KRK and the Rockits because of admittedly how awful the Gen 3's were. KRK has fixed everything that was wrong with the G3's. No more flabby overwhelming bass. No more "clamped" sound. Headroom is stellar even from the 5's, and the 7's and 8's are great steps up. Larger front porting is necessary, and the app integration that allows you to set up your monitors for your room is a game changer. I would have never previously recommended anyone buy the G3's over even Yamaha monitors, and especially not over the Adam Audio T5V's or the LP6 Kali's. These monitors show just how much KRK wants to bring a better product to market and how much they listened to feedback. I highly recommend the Gen 4's. Steer clear of the Gen 3's, no matter how deep of a sale they end up on. The Gen 4's are an entry level monitor that punches well above their weight, and you can feel great about picking up a pair to use for years to come.Donny Two Thumbs

Sounds like what you would expect for a high quality Celestion speak. Worked perfectly in my little Peavy Rage practice amp, and sounded better than the original Blue Marvel.jamin847

I have a vintage Mouse amp from Lectrosonics I had used for busking back in the day. The speaker's cone was brittle and developed holes. I patched it as well as I could, but, it was a goner. Lectrosonics didn't sell the speakers as their supplier had discontinued them. I set to look for a replacement (~15W 4Ω) and decided on this one. The Mouse specsheet said 8˝, but it was 7 1/2 ˝, which I realized after taking the amp apart (read the manual, but always measure-lesson learned). After some chiseling, I was able to install the Celestion. I plugged in the old guitar and it was good. Real good. The Mouse is alive! It's now a practice amp and I hope to get more years out of this old rodent.Axegrinder

My one watt Bumbox Lead 1 sounded mushy with a 12 inch cabinet and I was hoping a low watt speaker would sound bigger. I am pretty impressed with this now that the speaker is broken in. Good clarity and crunch at low volume. Excellent sound for rock playing.John

Great replacement for the original Phillips in the silver face Vibro Champ. Late Breakup lets the tubes get into saturation while still having good touch sensitivity. Nice tone without modifying the amp.David

While I did not purchase these from Parts Express, I do own 6 of these. They are horn loaded in Orbit 4 cabinets, and I must say that once I dialed in DSP for the cabinets, these 8" drivers are present, smooth, and loud. Made me scared of a rim shot while testing in my apartment. Orbits are bi amped, 8" and 1" share a channel with a passive XO. I'm feeding the mid/high section with a QSC PLD 4.3 around 650w RMS rating for the channel..limited to 25V RMS/52V peak.Charles

Has a very muddy sound – I don't think you can use them for anything musical. It would work for a harsh intercom system at a grocery store. but I was disappointed. I have always had great results with Celestion speakers in the past, so now I will be more careful.2013_kinsm

I brought this as I don't want want to lug my amp all over the place so I can leave the speaker at the rehearsal room and use my Boss multi effects unit. My fx unit plugs straight into the speaker or into the mixing desk and then the speaker is used a wedge. It's a really good sound and very light weight. The only feedback is that the packaging is not recyclable as there is a lot of polystyrene glued to cardboard. Alto need to get rid the the polystyrene!MATTHEW B.

Can’t fault these as an upgrade from my previous units. Sound quality has a very noticeable difference to cheaper made speakers around the same price. The 12s I had previously had no bass without rattling the plastic moulded units and the high frequencies were far too much. The Altos have a more Punchier bass, highs that don’t overpower the bass and mid otherwise your constantly battling the sound quality through earphones while mixing. All the people that come to the studio love these monitors. Used in conjunction with a active 12inch sub just makes it more enjoyable.Micky B.

Bought these for a second site as a church so budget was limited, smaller room catering to about 60-80 people. Sound quality has been great, really nice low noise floor which could have been a real problem if you're in a more intimate setting. Absolutey get what you pay for and, to be honest, would have liked to have a bit more to spend, but temper your expectations and you won't be dissapointed. Running these alongside a Behringer XENYX X1832USB and has been great. Portability wasn't a concern for us but if you're looking for something light these are ridiclously easy to carry!Phil L.

I own 4 of the PPS4-8s and I'm using them not as car speakers but in custom cabinets in my garage. These speakers are loud and they're clear. They are marketed as mid-range speakers but they do a nice job covering the sound spectrum. The specs say the frequency response on these is 50Hz-4000Hz but I'm wondering if they don't respond further up on the high end. They seem to work quite well as full-range speakers. Now THIS speaker thumps. Definitely very loud and provides a clear mid bass sound that cuts any SPL sub build you throw at it. Rockford is the king of quality and long lasting products. Very happy.Rex

Good overall speaker if you all ready have good high range speakers and tweats I simply lowered the wattage to even out the sound in my system wich is all fasgate and also the pps4s seem to overload prime r150x2 when I added them to my system I tried to run them along with 2 tweats 2 -4inch and 2-6inch coaxil I quickly realized that the pps4s were watt suckers. I was a little hesitant that this speaker would work for my unique application. I'm not using it for a guitar amp but as a replacement speaker for a 1948 AM/FM/Phono radio that the original 10" speaker was missing. It turns out this speaker works great. I went with the 8" version instead of a bigger one to get a greater frequency range and am glad I did. This thing rocks even though the tube amp is only putting out 5w.Chad

I used two of these speakers (8 ohm in parallel) in a clone of the Magnatone Melodier 109 that I built. They turned out to be a perfect match for the self-split push-pull circuit. They have a rich sound when played clean, and they handle the output-tube distortion that the amp produces beautifully. Absolutely perfect for blues. And the price is right! I needed replacement drivers for the Yamaha Passport 300 speakers, and after trying some alternatives these were PERFECT with superb depth and range! These may have been the originals OEM'd in the first place. Definitely recommend. Note that you will have to change the female terminal on the negative lead wire of the cabinet to the next size up. The original driver had a smaller terminal on that side.jimrn

After simulating many different 10" and 8" drivers on this site I settled on this one, and in my finished box it sounds great. It's in a 40L ported enclosure tuned to around 45 Hz (with an f3 about the same). It mated well with the dayton DC28F tweeter I used, and it is crossed at 1300 Hz but since this woofer is so clear I think I could have crossed it higher. If used in a ported box down to 45-50Hz, it runs out of excursion with less than 20 watts, but that fits what I used it for (even a small 12v amp will drive this speaker to loud levels with a sensitivity of 94dB).J Carl

Overall: I have an old Fender Rumble 15 bass practice amp, the older "non-v3" model. When playing at any kind of volume, the speaker would "fart" (I swear it wasn't me). I replaced it with this speaker, now the amp sounds much better, and can be played louder, and with more bass. It can still fart if you try, but hardly like it used to.Allen

I bought a Bugera V 5 5 watt tube amp. From most everything I read on the Internet the original speaker just sounded "too dark" And looking around for any 8 inch speaker with 4 ohms was not too easy.Not too many choices to choose from. The Jensen MOD 20 was available (locally) and the price was real good.I bought the MOD 8-20 for a replacement, I made a GOOD CHOICE it seems to be louder and brighter than the Bugera speaker. Before I had to run my tone knob maxed out on 10…still was too muddy. But the Jensen I can run my tone knob at 4 or 5 if I wanted to. How awesome is that . I replaced both tubes in the amp and did not really notice a difference , but now the speaker…that was different. Thank you Jensen for making such a good speaker replacement.Electric John

Fender Mustang I Speaker Upgrade: The little Fender Mustang I is a great little amp for practice and low volume rehearsals, however, the stock speaker cuts nearly an octave off your lows and highs are tinny, and mids are farty. Again, great little amp for what it is and how low-cost it is. By swapping the stock speaker for the Mod 8-20 it is not only affordable, easy to do, it makes a BIG difference in overall tone and note articulation. I only use this little amp for practice and low volume rehearsals and have been using it for close to 5 years specifically for that purpose and did not want to spend half or more of what the amp costs or is worth. When I first purchased the amp it was obvious the stock speaker was the weak link. The Mod 8-20 will make you happy, or should I say happier. Great little speaker at a great price. Note: make sure that when you do the swap that you connect the RED speaker wire to the PLUS connector and BLACK speaker wire to the MINUS connector tabs on the Mod 8-20 (they are marked on the Mod 8-20). You will also need to ground the Mod 8-20 by snipping the ground wired soldered to the stock speaker and attaching it to the Mod 8-20's metal outer rim (cage) by scratching or sanding a little of the paint off around one of the screw holes that secures the speaker to the soundboard and attaching under the screw. I have a Roland Streetcube Ex that I obtained for busking without AC power. The low end frequency was not satisfactory. I saw on YouTube where someone replaced the stock speakers with these. In my opinion, these did not work for me. The bottom end decreased further with the low mid being magnified far more than acceptable. I use the amp for electric guitar and backing tracks. With these speakers the bass decreased further and out of the blue the kick drum was extremely pronounced. Perhaps as guitar only these would be good. According to the Youtube poster, his backing tracks had a better bass response. My experience did not yield such results. When I reinstalled the stock speakers the backing tracks were back at acceptable EQ levels.Crazystrings

I hated the bright tone of my VHT special 6 until I found this speaker and installed it. Now it has a warmer more vintage tone.. like a tube amp is supposed to sound! Excellent replacement speaker for a tube amp!!homesteadhound

Holy smoke! I hear 'ya loud and clear, Electric Lightning 10"s! I stuck a pair in my Fender Custom Vibrolux (basically a hot-rodded '63 Vibroverb) which I have rebuilt to 1963 Vibroverb specs. Very true-sounding speakers. Extremely efficient, hardly any cone breakup, and super-tight with a very balanced EQ spectrum. They added significant weight to my amp compared to the stock Eminence AlNiCo speakers, but I'm glad I made the switch!Michael

Just replaced a mix matched set with a quartet of 10" Electric Lightnings in a Super Reverb. While they sounded tight at first, over several days they broke in like gold, both super clean or heavily preamped. The bass response is more round than ever, and with none of the mushiness I have associated many 10" designs. I'm able to run more low than ever and the low E string just sounds fantastic. They are stong/robust sounding, akin to the tone of 12" speakers. The highs really mellowed out and sing like I had hoped Overall the sound is simply huge, clear, and articulate at any volume. I would think any player will see benefits regardless of musical style. Great improvement and speaker!Brad

This speaker sounds great. I have it mounted in a single speaker extension cab, and it performs well. I bought this, because on the Quilter amplifier site, they mention using this in some of their amps. Good price was a crucial factor for me.Peter

Outstanding Celestion TFO818 8" Professional Speaker. Has great high and mid frequency response, and the low frequency is extremely great considering this speaker's size! I bought this Speaker to replace the stock speaker in my Fender Champion 20 Combo Amplifier. The results of the swap was unbelievable! It sounds like a much larger amplifier than it is. It will get very loud, but so nice and clean. But it has a nice sound for overdrive or heavy distortion. I also played an acoustic guitar through this speaker and it sounded very warm once I dialed in the tone I thought sounded best. I liked this speaker so much that I bought 6 more and built a 6 x 8 extension cabinet. I play a lot of Jazz guitar, so the new cabinet with six eight inch speakers was great for me and my sound.Jim

Overall: I put this speaker in my Tech21 Trademark 10. The stock speaker is like most 8" that come in low powered solid state amps, just OK. Farts at louder volumes and breaks up excessively when you run a moderate amount of bass. However, I put this little guy in and it's awesome. A lot louder and you can actually get clean sounds at higher volumes. It sounds very balanced and as big as a tiny 8" speaker can. I love itCharles

Yep, it sounds better and adds greater volume. Not a life changing event that some of the other reviews claim. Still, it is better to have upgraded from the original speaker. I have a 15" Eminence Legend that I'll drop into a cabinet tonight to see if it can add even more life to the SCXD (Super Champ XD). Glad to put aside the stock Fender speaker. It was weak with not much personality. I read alot about the Rajun'Cajun version but I like to be different so I went with the report of the Patriot's vintage american sound. My custom Tele (Fralin/Adder pickups) sounds fresh, loud and sweet through the clean channel. The modeling channel and effects have come alive with the swap. The overdriven effects are evil. A friend plays out with a Strat through a Blues Jr. and I have always enjoyed hearing that combo. The Copperhead/Superchamp brings out that quality sound.Anonymous

With these being my first set of studio monitors and I can honestly say that I haven't even really tweaked them yet, these have very nice audio reproduction. Now I have a lot of experience with speakers so I was impressed with the monitors' range, tone, and power. The price was as an exceptional bargain for this full set up and is well worth it for any amateur bedroom producer! The foam pads also look great and perform well. The only con to this set was the fact I had to go and buy a pair of balanced 1/4" cables to hook it up properly. It comes with a useless Y1/4" which will work terribly! Now if they traded the Y cable with a pair of the balanced cables I wouldn't have any complaints whatsoever! All in all a good deal nonetheless!kenn-cla

i just recently bought these boys for my recording studio. first of all let me say i was shocked on how the size they is for that small dollar amount. i was really shocked for the actual look also. these guys are extrodinary good. if u looking for some good monitors that doesnt break your pocket for a laptop or desktop sound..men these are really it no joke. they didnt pay me to put some bs on here. i am the actual person that bought these monitors. the sound is outrageous good..u dont even need a audio card or sound card. these one have there own built into the speakers u just plug them in to your laptop and that it. they have control eq in the back and sound. i make beats a lot and i produced artist and i have few other monitors in my studio also. but these lil big fellas do it for my music and sound. the speaker hit hard no problem with latency or popping from the sound. now they want work is with asio u will have to connect to your audio sound in your computer or laptop if u want that loud hit. i would really recommend these to any music maker or just to listen to speakers on your desk top. there are 100% good. i m get some extra ones for my studio again. thanks rockville. these boys are the bang. thanks.djbuck01

Wow! These monitors really kick butt and are very nicely built. I've used a couple other brands, made of cheesy plastic and other dubious materials, but the Rockvilles look and sound great. I like the high and low frequency boost switches on the back. My only complaint is that the power switch on the back of the right speaker is a bit hard to get to, but that's not an unusual location, and I totally get Rockville's design aesthetic; I wouldn't want to mess up the front, either. I've been through many, many 12s for Blackface style speakers. These are my faves. For good 60s tones in country and rock with a BF amp these guys work great. Take pedals well. Not shrill or muddy in my experience. Solid surfy bass. Smooth treble. 120 watts which is triple what I would ever throw at em. For a Deluxe or a Pro in a honkytonk bar, these are just the ticket.edol9871

For me the tones of these are somewhere in between American and British. I use these mainly in a 2×10 cab for a fender vibroverb style amp. Vs the Oxford speakers these have a lil more mid focus and rounded highs that work much better with higher gain tones. I also use these with my Marshall origin 50 set relatively clean to get a slightly bigger bottom end than V30s.RockinJohnson

I bought this speaker in the 16ohm version to replace a v30 in my orange ppc1x12. I love the v30 but I mainly use a 100w Marshall DSL100HR and the v30 by itself couldn't handle all that wattage since it's only 60watts. So I decided to go with the swamp thang cause a little more defined low end sounded like a good idea as I play a 7 string ltd (fishman fluence pups) half the time. But I was worried I would loose the highs that we need for attack in high gain situations as well as playing clean which I do very often also. But now that I've played tgrough this speaker I can say that is not a problem whatsoever. This speaker has twice the highs and twice the lows as my v30. Probably a little less midrange but since it's such a powerful speaker it doesn't feel like it's relying on mids the cut through. Full disclosure I've only had the speaker a few hours and played through it a little over an hour but if it sounds this good outta the box I'm confident things will only get better. It's a great sounding speaker in my opinion that would complement any style/set up. I plan on buying an empty Luke 2x12C cab from seismic audio soon so i can pair the ST and the v30 which im lookong forward to. But in the meantime im in no huge hurry since the ST sounds so good by itself.Michael I.
