Bass Guitar Tuning 5 String For Sale (2024 Update)

Earlier this year I purchased my first 5-string bass and was disappointed with the loose tension of the floppy B string, I purchased these strings because I thought since they were designed for drop down tuning that they would provide better tension on the B string. And they did just that. Perhaps not as much as I would prefer, but they did out perform the stock string set by far. The WOW factor for me was the tone that the DRs produce right out of the package. Being a Classic rocker, these strings produce that bottom end that is so prevalent in that genre. I was so impressed with the tone that these have become my preferred string set for my 4-string P-bass (the 4-string set of course). normal installation, no stretching needed, tune to desired tone, and away you go, ive tune these up on my 5 string Squier deluxe active jazz bass played for a few hours put it back in the case played it the next day and its still in tune, sometimes longer even after a couple of days and it still stays in tune, for me "thats purfect", EASYbob24raw

The materials are good. Fit and finish are good. Sound is good – I can get the P bass sound I was after in a 5 string. The fretwork is ok – for the price. Probably could use a good polishing. No hig frets or fret ends sticking out. The action on mine was high and the intonation was off. I lowered the strings a bit and adjusted the intonation. If you can't do this yourself, you will most likely need to have the tech at the store do it. Most Maple neck guitars in this price range shrink a tiny bit in their first Minnesota winter from the dry air. This causes the "fret bloom". I most likely will heed to file and reshape the fret ends when this happens. For the price, it seems to be a solid value.Merle

I was very surprised when I received this instrument. It was packed well and thought I was receiving the same quality instrument that I have received from musicians friend in the past. This right out of the box was not set up properly and would not play since the pickups were not soldered properly or at all. Had to do a full set up on the instrument and solder the pickups to get it to play. Now it sounds like the other instruments I have always received from Musicians Friend. I know this is not an expensive unit but the quality from ibanez was terrible. I am really disappointed to say the least. I should have sent it back, but thought I could fix myself and no what I had ,rather than have another sent to me in the same way the 1st one was sent. Very disappointed!!!!starfire 64

Overall this is a very nice bass for the money. Mine was made in Indonesia. Quality and finish were very good. Setup was fine right out of the box. Hardware and electronics seem to be of good quality. You can get a lot of tonal variation as well. One minor complaint is the body is lightweight and the neck is heavy so be sure and buy a comfortable strap that won't slip.Steve

Bought this as an open box return. The finish was slightly scratched near the bottom strap peg (so slight I didn't notice it for several days) and one fret marker was missing leaving just the hole. For the price the damage was VERY minimal. I have yet to replace the missing fret marker and have never noticed any issues at all while playing. Overall, considering it was an open box return, the quality of the bass greatly exceeded my expectations. The bass itself is very nice. Good tone, ease of playability, sound electronics, solid construction, and overall of good quality. I wouldn't choose it over my Peavey T-40 but that's because I bought the Peavey new in 1980 and we've been best friends a long time. Otherwise the Rogue could have easily become my go-to bass. In summation, I would have no problem in recommending this guitar to a friend.Pokyhawk

There's not a lot to dislike. I thought I would have to strip the finish and redo it to my liking, but the blue sparkle actually looks quite nice. Tuners are sealed, and like the pickups and controls might need upgrading, but are perfectly serviceable right out of the box. Maybe this was because it was a scratch and dent special, but there was SEVERE fret sprout, so bad that I scratched my hand badly during initial playing. Fixing that isn't terribly difficult, though, and during that fix I noticed the action was a bit high, so I lowered it. Once I change the strings I'll give it a full setup for neck relief and all. I'm not docking it any points for this as you as the buyer should be aware that any instrument that you get in the mail, especially at this price, will likely need a setup done. I bought a rogue A/E guitar on a scratch and dent special and it's served me well over the years. I expect even better from this bass.SKR3N3S

Don't waste your money on this bass. Get an Ibanez GSR 105EX instead. I wanted to try this bass out and played it for a day and then put it back in the box and put it in storage. The craftsmanship is very poor: back of the neck is not completely smooth and feels sticky, fretboard looks dull and faded, paint was messed up in some areas, and the neck is unecessarily long. The strings it comes with are awful too and leave your fingers smelling like metal. The pickups are terrible (had to turn up the volume really high on my amp to even hear sound from the bass). Overall, this is NOT a good bass guitar and you will be better off putting that money elsewhere.egears123

I just received these today (3-8-13, not from musicians friend) and was very excited about them. I play in a heavy metal band that tunes to CDCF and my ernie ball super slinky 45s weren't cutting it, so I ordered these. I started putting them on and the tone was great. Once I put on the 4th string (C), it was just about tuned and it snapped. Maybe this was a fluke, but for someone that plays shows, this is completely unacceptable. To have a string designed for low tuning, not be able to tune to C is just ridiculous. No way these would tune any higher. I would avoid these. Really recommend these strings my bass has that twang I've been searching for but without taking anything from the deep basses sounds you want from your bass. When you are stuck in a groove these strings give you so many options to play around with sounds. I bought them for C standard tuning but I've been so happen with them I have learnt half my set list to suit these strings now just for an excuse to use them more. I have been a bass player for 30 years. I was happy that my 13 year old daughter wanted to take up the instrument. She learned Ukelele well enough that I was willing to listen but no way was she using my basses because I see how she takes care of her room. Her arms were too small anyway so I researched this Ibanez mikrobass. What a delight! The walnut finish is fantastic and the tone when unplugged is tremendous. Plugged in, it was a little clackety-clack and the tone knob is almost literally nothing so I put daddario XL Flatwounds 50-100 (a recent discovery from which I will never return) and took care of that problem. The tuners seem a little slack when Im tuning it up. If I were to make a change, it would be the tuners. But theyre fine enough. It is exactly the size of my six string guitars so I was able to devote a quality gig bag that I dont use much for the cause. My daughter is encouraged by it although she hasnt quite dug in yet. However if she decides not to play after all, this will remain in my collection. Its just SO FUNboredofthisalready

I play in my home studio and record my bass along with mp3's of my favoritie songs, I make videos for self critique and to share with other bass players in my FaceBook bassists group. I recently sold my Ibanez SR755 5 string because I was not thrilled with the B string sound. Now I find the B sounds better to my ear with this bass that costs one third of the SR755…Amazing. I prefer passive electronics and the GSR205SM with it's Phat EQ give me the best of both worlds or active or passive. With the EQ turned counter clockwise the bass sounds like a passive and as you turn up the EQ the bass responds well and gives me an edge on the sound. Best of all there is no Floppy B string farty tone. the B sounds more musical. I want to address the weight of this bass. It is light as a feather especially after playing my Warwick. I can play for extended periods of time without having back pain issues. As to the statement of other reviewers about this being a great beginner's bass, let me add that in the hands of a seasoned player it sounds and feels as good as you'd want it to sound as well. This bass sounds totally different than my Fenders and Warwick and I find that to be advantageous.Preston

Overall: I bought this without playing it, but was very pleased right out of the box. My fingers were black after a few minutes of playing due to the dirty strings, but that didn't dampen my opinion by any means (but good idea to purchase a new set of strings along with the bass). Bought the Walnut Finish (looks more expensive) for use with my SC-300 Boss Looper (also purchased from zZounds). It sounds great! I'm not onstage playing head banger metal, so don't need that rumbling low end anyway. But the pickup configuration def gives you a lot of low end. Even though I've been playing guitar and bass for over 30 years, I would use this bass onstage, AND more importantly, if you are introducing anyone to playing bass – this will be a much easier learning bass due to the size. It still feels like a 'bass' and it's not tiny or anything, but it doesn't feel clunky like a bigger bass does. I'm looking forward to using this for a long while, and assuming it holds up over the next few months I'll likely grab another one just to have a backup. Ibanez knocked it out of the park with this one. I purchased one of these a little over 3 years ago in Roadster Orange and still have it. In it's price range I think this is the best bass you can get. I've had much more expensive (Modulus FB5 Flea) basses and much cheaper. This is a well balanced bass and you get ALOT of higher end features for your money with it. I have been in love with the fat, boosted sound of Ibanez Soundgear basses since I started playing as a teenager. And the feel is amazing. No sharp fret edges, great action. Highly recommended if you are looking for a bass in this price range. I tried the Sterling Sub 5 and absolutely hated it. It's garbage compared to these.TW

Hey guys I wrote a review for this guitar and it was a 4 star review, I have made some corrections if you will about this Bass 1) The pots are cheap, but I had 2 that simply weren't tightened down, simply pull the knob off and gently but firmly tighten the nut on the pot and your golden. 2) I made some ever so slight adjustments on the bridge saddles on the E string and the G string on mine all it took was about a half turn on both screws now zero buzzing and still plays great virtually unnoticeable playing wise. I have very expensive basses and everything in between . I don't want to take those expensive heavy basses everywhere. This bass replaced a MIM Fender Precision bass. I could not have been more pleased with the performance of this bass. The first thing I did was take it to my guitar guy and have it setup to my liking (as always). It was set up fairly good Straight Out of the Box. This is now the bass that I use when I play at Disney. Construction is awesome but what really surprised me is the sound is every much a Fender precision or even that of a beefy jazz. More versatile than my MIM Fender precision was. The bass is light so after playing all day I don't feel like I've been carrying bricks around my shoulders. The action is exceptionally smooth. I think this is a great intermediate bass for anyone – 5 or 4 strings it doesn't matter. I have seen where some people don't like the bass boost feature. Always question what they're using the base for. If you play a lot of death metal then this may not be the best choice for you. But if you're like most of us playing anything from Jazz to R&B and pop on a regular basis this is an excellent choice for you. There are a lot of choices in this price range. However, the quality of this instrument's Construction outshines most of them in my opinionTank

I have used D'Addario strings on both my basses and my classical guitar for over 8 years, and have always been amazed by their quality, durability, and dependability! I just tried the EXL160-5 set (have been using EXL160 for years, and always had to buy a 130 gauge for my low b) and I love them! I cannot even comfortably play on any other gauge of strings! This set holds a tune perfectly, even after lowering both the action AND string tention of my 5-string, my strings are still always in tune when I pick up my bass! These strings are very easy to break in, but still hold awesome tone for an amazingly long time! I will never use anything else but D'Addario!Never Alone

Used Ernie Ball Power Slinky 5's for a long time, and got a set of these free. Slapped them on my Music Man Stingray 5, and I'm sold: slightly more midrange, and more punch. Sorry Ernie Ball, I'm switching (don't worry, I still playy your basses 🙂WordIsBorn79

Jumping from a heavy 4 string Epiphone to this beauty was an awesome experience! It's narrow and comfortable neck is a highlight, I found string spacing not to be a prob. Sound is also great and it has a beautiful rounded shape. I have been using it actively for 3 yrs to now and have to say, it's light weight is definitely one of my favorite features, additionally tuning is very very stable, requiring only small adjustments if weather changes. On the other hand, I had some problems with electronics, some re-welding was needed, battery replacement ain't easy, an snap-on lid would be preferable, but that`s it. With more pros than cons (price included), this bass is a very good choice, it won't disappoint you.Skybss

I played this bass about seven times, and knew I wanted one. The neck has very Fender-like feel to it. The pickups both have three settings, series, split and parallel. In series the sound is loud and powerful, good for heavy rock. In split, the volume is lower, and you will get slight 60 cycle hum with each pickup soloed, but not when they're used together. On parallel, the pickups sound very Fender-ish. The neck pickup alone on parallel has a nice, round and warm P-bass tone. Both pickups on split sound like a 70s Jazz bass. It also has many other tones; you simply have to experiment with the switches. The tuners stay in tune, and it has a good bridge on it. I got the ivory with maple board. It is gorgeous. The fit and finish is extremely good. If you're looking for a bass that has vintage Fender tones, and more, this bass is it. It is worth much more than it sells for. Buy one. You will love it. Sound: I can't think of any way to describe it tonally other than two jazz basses mashed together, with the option to turn one off or turn both on into a series or parallel beast. That's what this bass sounds like tonally, which somehow the double jazz pickup that was in the american series P basses couldn't even seem to perfectly emulate. It's a very impressive sound and the series/single/parallel switch attached to them is where this bass seems almost magical in managing to sound like 3 different basses in one. Going to have to split this section into three to describe it better. Series mode: very much like those double jazz pickups mentioned earlier that are in early 00s american series P basses and certain discontinued warwick models. Single Coil mode: put the pickup selector in the middle and you have a jazz bass plain and simple. That's pretty much the best way to describe this sound. Parallel mode: The final setup provides a very unique sound that lends itself very well to the genre I play. It's a midrange scooped sound that still retains plenty of high and low mid definition and manages to cut very well without sounding muddy like series bass humbuckers can tend to do. The best comparison I can think of for the parallel setup on the BRIDGE pickup is somewhat close to a Warwick Thumb bass with it's very aggressive percussive tone, but instead of a low mid focus it's very high mid heavy. The neck pickup in parallel is it's own sound that I've never heard out of a bass before, and is great for smooth runs and calm basslines. That being said, this bass manages to be the most dynamic bass I've ever played tonally, without a single battery powering it. Very impressive especially considering what you're paying for it. Features: Pickup wiring switching and the unique j-buckers are what makes this bass so special. However, the inability to blend pickups kind of sucks and it could've only been made even better by an active circuit, also with it's own on/off switch but that's something I can do should I ever see the need. Ease of Use: Might not be the best bass if you're after a VERY SPECIFIC sound (ala jazz bass, ibanez lows and highs, warwick low mid growl, musicman midrange bite) and is definitely something that might confuse and scare away people with the 80's-esque switching options, however it makes up for that in how many convincing and unique tones it can produce. Quality: Overall, the instrument is solid. There are two reasons I've taken off stars however: there's a minor cosmetic defect on mine that irks me even though no one has noticed it but me: when the pickguard was mounted, it was actually mounted in such a way that the back side of the pickguard, inbetween the pickups, is lifting up due to the mounting holes being drilled a bit too close to the center of the body. Second one is something more unavoidable due to the combination of a maple fretboard and the instrument being made in indonesia and coming over here to california: sharp fret ends. 40 dollars at a local tech solved it for me within 2 days of owning it, however it's something to consider and I feel it's more inherent of maple fretboards, so the only one that might suffer from this is the Ivory one (which is what I got) Value: In my opinion, best 5 string bass in the sub-1000 range by a mile. Only other contenders for that spot in my mind are the Ibanez BTB options and the Warwick Rockbass Corvette Doublebuck. Manufacturer Support: I did ask about a case and they were very quick to respond with plenty of helpful info on solutions. For those curious, the 5 string variant is ridiculously long (approx 49" from headstock to end of body) so don't expect it to fit in most hard cases. Schecter is yet to make a case so case hunting will be a thing! The Wow Factor: Unreal tone palette and options for this pricerange, extremely hard to beat for the same price. When I first tried this bass I was expecting a 1,000 dollar pricetag. I saw a 649.99 one. Needless to say, I sought it out on zZounds and bought it a few days later LOL. Here's for hoping Schecter continues to use these pickups and puts them in more cutting edge models like the Stiletto, I'd be on the waiting list for one that's for sure. Overall: Surprised to see no one has said much about this bass yet, so here's my takeaway and why I bought one. I'll save my life story for later for the sake of making this a review rather than a story, however I should mention I've never owned let alone played a Schecter bass until now, however I've owned well over a dozen various Ibanez soundgear basses, from the cheapest GSRs to the higher end prestiges.William

I bought this bass on a whim, and I don't think I could be happier. The pickups have a surprising amount of versatility, and the body is surprisingly lightweight. Only downside is a there's JUST a bit too much neck dive. Nothing to make me wish I didn't buy though. I do recording and play live, and this bass sounds spectacular through everything I've plugged it into. 8/10Justin, W

I've been playing for a long time. You can pay whatever you like for strings and I have always looking for that Holy Grail set of strings. Some last a bit longer. Some other strings also sound good but these just have that sound and feel for me. I play a lot and properly wiped down after playing these strings last a good long time for me but I wouldn't care if I changed sets two to one against DR's or anyone else's string. Two sets of these are no more expensive than DR's and DR's wish they sounded and played like these. Personally I think these last as long as DR's at half the price and I have NEVER had a problem or inconstancy with these strings. I cannot say the same for GHS, DR's, Rotosounds or others. It's just a great set of bass strings for a more than reasonable price!Thump 54

This is the only set of strings I have used where the low B has the same piano string clarity as the rest of the strings, and keeps its timbre for around 3 months average use!. Most 5 string packs (even Sadowsky) low B start off "just OK" and rapidly develop undesirable atonal harmonics, and after 30 days sounds like a detuned E from a Hofner hollow bass from a 60's beatles recording (yuuuuuuuk!). Before playing bass I always used Ernie Ball on my guitars, both electric and acoustic. I own a Gibson Les Paul (wired like Peter Green) Fender Strat, Fender Tele and a Dean Boca 12 String. I also own 2odd name acoustics along with a Fender Jazz, Epiphone Viola bass and a G&L JB 2 Tribute. I have never used EB strings on a bass. Since I needed to replace the strings on my G&L I decided to try the EB bass string and I'm sure glad I did. Easy to play great tone and the price is hard to beat. I will always use EB on my G&L and will consider them on my Fender Jazz if they have flat wounds. I won't on the Epiphone viola has I only use black nylon wrapped flat wounds on it (the way Paul did during the LET IT BE days). These strings are a fantastic value! They sound wonderful, are easy on the fingers and your frets, and have some of the lowest tension out there. That means that your neck and truss rod will not suffer nearly as much as with other strings. Also, these strings look killer!nsalaza

Initially received defective product (G string was dead). DR sent a replacement quickly. First impression was these strings were mid-heavy, not my style at all. With a few knob tweaks was able to make them sound really good. I love the look on people's face at the gig trying to figure out how something that looks this way sounds just like non coated strings! I've been playing for over 30 years. I mainly play a fretless bass but I like to play a fretted bass at times. My old fretted bass is worn out and spending 2k on an instrument that isn't my main go to bass is not something I'm going to do. This Yamaha is a great bass. The finish is perfect. Even in the hole to adjust the truss rod. I got the translucent black and It's a very black matte look. The frets are not super polished but are not sharp or sloppy. They play really nice, stand tall, and are capable of a wide variety of tones with different playing stlyes. The 5 piece neck is really playable. I'm really digging it. Mine is perfectly adjusted right out of the box. Tuning pegs have a really cool gunmetal finish and are adjustable if the ever get sloppy. Bridge is the same gunmetal finish and isn't high mass but it's not flimsy like the stock fender and it is the standard 5 screw type if I ever decided to change it. I don't think I'll do it anytime soon. The sustain resonates so well. Maybe better than my pricey fretless. I'm really into the mahogany body. Mine came with the intonation setup perfectly. It shipped detuned as it should've. All I did was stretch the string and tune it. Man do these electronics shine. I've got to spend some more time really learning the controls but I was able to dial in a few tones I wanted to try immediately. My first impression of the strings is that they really suck. Maybe that's true but they do play well and they're not dead but I bought a set of my favorite strings that I'll get on when I get sick of these. Overall I got a lot more bass than I expected for the money. A beginner could really grow into this and more advanced players should be quite satisfied.ZioEnzo

First, I saw it in a shop just out of the corner of my eye and it grabbed my attention. So, I am usually not a fan of Yamaha, holding this bass in my hands convinced me in seconds I found it easy to play because of the neck form, which is curved asymmetrical, giving a good grip for my thumb. The when the seller passed me the cable to a very cheap amp, I was immediately sure that this is an exceptional bass guitar for a good price. As I am also not a fan of active electronic, the possibility to switch between active and passive is well done, and when during a concert your battery gives up, there is no big problem to switch to passive and change the battery before the next song. I love to take this bass when I do not know what the meeting with other musicians is about, and even with electronic music it can cope. The bass is very light and easy to carry, it is easy to play and playing with the active electronic gives you a huge variety of modern sounds, that is really nice to experiment with. Surprisingly for me Yamaha did a lot of innovative things with this bass guitar and a lot of things right. Meanwhile I am used to the thin grey matt painting and somehow, I started liking it. An absolutely beautiful instrument, this is my second SA360 and although they are no longer. Made in Japan, be assured they have not lost any of the build quality or attention to detail. The guitar was really well set up, is great to play, feels good in the hand and sounds the bee’s knee’s. If you are looking to start out in guitar playing get yourself an Ibanez Gio to start as a first upgrade from that, then the SA series is where you want to be at.Timbo

Bought these at a local store and tried them last night on my 90's fender jazz plus. Didn't like the sound. The g string was very dull. I do a little popping, and I couldn't hear it. The D string was not much better. The A string was boomy. E and B were fine. I turned knobs all night trying to get a balanced sound. I like punchy bright, and never got this. I made a lot of mistakes last night due to focus on tone adjustments instead of playing. I may give Dunlop brights or DR's a try. Usually use Fender strings.Garry the dog

For me, these strings continue to be the standard by which all others should be judged. The balance and consistency from set to set and string to string is unmatched. And the tone is superb across the full frequency spectrum. When first installed, they are very bright. I play in a latin fusion group, 2-4 shows a week. 1-2 hours a night. I've been using this brand for decades and the sound is always the same..dependable and smooth. Bright and clean, not too bright. These are installed on a Gretsch short scale. They have a great smooth feel, tension with balanced volume and warm sound. They don't rattle with loose tension like most shortscale strings. I'm just sorry I didn't try the Rotosound Trubass decades ago. I finally ordered them from Strings and Beyond and l will be ordering more for my other basses. As far as Rotosounds claim to emulate an upright l will say they give you a rich warm sound usable in a lot of musical styles. When installing these strings you may have to widen the nut slots so the strings will not bind and allow them to sit correctly. Very, very comfortable strings to play. I have only had these strings on for about a week, so I cannot attest to their longevity. However, right out of the package, they have had an excellent upright like tone that is perfect for the types of roots music I like to play. I like to play with a slightly high action and these strings seem to be made for that. I have not experienced any of the hum sometimes associated with tapewound strings. My pickups are kind of bright, and these strings helped balance my tone with their darkness. Overall, I am very satisfied and would recommend them to anyone who likes to play country/blues/americana type music.Kris

This is my second set of Monel flats, but my first encounter with their short-scale set. I put them on my EB-0. As others have mentioned (and maybe this doesn't apply to your bass), the silk wrapping at the knob end extends over the place the string touches the bridge. It requires scraping part of the silk away so you can get a metal-touching metal. Again, this may not matter to you; the EB-0, however, produces a mellow tone already and anything that softens that tone (like the wrapping) makes it more difficult to tease even a little crunch out of the instrument. Not a big deal, but an unnecessary step for me to have to do this when it would be a simple matter to use less silk at the factory and give us ready to use strings out of the bag. Other than that, I like Monel strings — they are strong and reliable — and would buy them again to put on a standard scale bass.Offhis Rocker

If you want a premium bass for a mid level price this is the one! I bought this because I play in a Pantera tribute and as we know Rex loved Spector and now I know why. This thing is beautiful solid and heavy constructed but well balanced. It feels like power in your hands. Excellent tone controls and a great feel, cannot recommend enough. I've purchased this bass about a month ago. I did adjust the string height to my preference and changed the strings to the DR black beauties but It quickly became my go-to! The tone and feel are incredible! The string spacing helps to pull off cleaner and fast licks compared to Ibanezs' traditional spacing. The lows are crisp and the mids are full. The lows don't "growl" but it most certainly cuts through. I haven't put it down since it came it. Ibanez broke the mold with this one. You will NOT be disappointed.Peace
