I spent 15-20 minutes on the phone attempting to get info on the correct size Fret Wrap. I didn't. The CS person said this one would work. It's too small and depresses the strings rather that just muffling them. I play Ibanez and Fender electrics – so the necks are already pretty small at the nut. The medium size would have been the correct choice. So I can't NOT recommend them. Just get the right size for your needs.YeahOK

Plus points: low tension. Upright bass sort of sound. Nice sound a little bit brighter than flats. Negatives: thicker than normal strings makes action feel higher than it actually is. A bit rattley – you'll probably need to raise at the bridge. They don't have the same conducting effect as steel/nickel strings so you can get some earthing noises when you contact the strings.block.inlays

I once used D'Addarios for practice and gigs, then tried the Ernie Ball kind: these have a deeper bottom while having a comparable midrange presence. They're great for rock and roll gigs. The highs have a nice snap to them. Nickel strings are easier on the fingertips than stainless steel, plus the Slinkys last longer than Rotosounds. I've been playing for a long time. You can pay whatever you like for strings and I have always looking for that Holy Grail set of strings. Some last a bit longer. Some other strings also sound good but these just have that sound and feel for me. I play a lot and properly wiped down after playing these strings last a good long time for me but I wouldn't care if I changed sets two to one against DR's or anyone else's string. Two sets of these are no more expensive than DR's and DR's wish they sounded and played like these. Personally I think these last as long as DR's at half the price and I have NEVER had a problem or inconstancy with these strings. I cannot say the same for GHS, DR's, Rotosounds or others. This is the only set of strings I have used where the low B has the same piano string clarity as the rest of the strings, and keeps its timbre for around 3 months average use!. Most 5 string packs (even Sadowsky) low B start off "just OK" and rapidly develop undesirable atonal harmonics, and after 30 days sounds like a detuned E from a Hofner hollow bass from a 60's beatles recording (yuuuuuuuk!). Before playing bass I always used Ernie Ball on my guitars, both electric and acoustic. I own a Gibson Les Paul (wired like Peter Green) Fender Strat, Fender Tele and a Dean Boca 12 String. I also own 2odd name acoustics along with a Fender Jazz, Epiphone Viola bass and a G&L JB 2 Tribute. I have never used EB strings on a bass. Since I needed to replace the strings on my G&L I decided to try the EB bass string and I'm sure glad I did. Easy to play great tone and the price is hard to beat. I will always use EB on my G&L and will consider them on my Fender Jazz if they have flat wounds. I won't on the Epiphone viola has I only use black nylon wrapped flat wounds on it (the way Paul did during the LET IT BE days). The search is over. I've tried Ernie Ball, Chromes, and Thomastik and each and every one of these had aspects that I did not like. Either there was too much brightness, little balance, too much mids, bad feel of the strings, or overall tone that did not hit the sweet spot. Mind you those are also quality strings, but they do not shine like these Fender 55's. The search is simply over. The balance is just there. You don't have overwhelming frequency peaks with these strings because they sound even across the spectrum. Ernie Ball is sticky feeling and too bright for my style (which is amazing for some people, Im very impressed with Ernie Ball as well it just doesnt suite my style, these are almost tied with Fender), Chromes are peaky in the mids, and Thomastiks are too flabby and 'tubby' sounding. This is my top recommendation for strings and I think roundwound players should give them a shot.Bass hobbyist

These are long scale pure nickel round wound strings. They sound great; warm, mellow, but still well defined. Very old school. I use them on all my basses; long (34) and short (30.5) scale. The only caveat for using them on short scale basses, is that the larger diameter (low E) may not fit in the center hole of the tuning peg. In that case, just be sure to leave enough of the smaller diameter "core" to fit into the center hole, then wind the rest around the peg. Took me a while to discover these strings, but these are all I use now.Bassman

what can i say, i have been using Ernie Ball Slinky's for almost twenty years.and would not think of any other string. they are so flexible, i think i am using regular guitar strings. it doesn't take a Hercules to pull the strings down to the frets. and they always have the sound i am looking for. look, i am going to shoot straight. most musicians are not rich.and struggle until that day(if it ever comes) we get discovered or finally break through. most of us don't. so, if i can get a string that allows me to do what i can with a bass, and sound like the most expensive bass ever made, at a price where i can eat dinner that night,that's a win-win. so whether i am playing for a bunch of my friends, or playing in some major concert venue.i will continue to use Ernie Ball products.david

Tried these on my fretless acoustic bass and they make it sound lot like an upright double bass. I like the soft thump tone. Sometimes you need to be a bit understated and work with percussion rather than sound harsh and overwhelming playing bass-lead. These strings got the classic bass voice. I just wish they were a bit less expensive, so I hope they last a long time. I'm going to try some La Bella black nylon wrapped guitar strings on an ES335 next and see how they do jazz.p*w*r

Following a tip-off from Youtuber; 'Scott's Bass Lessons' I decided to give these a go. Apart from the seller's speedy delivery my biggest satisfaction comes from the sheer expansiveness of the sound available from these strings on my bass. They opened up all the 'head tones' I had been striving for along with the playing technique I had been attempting with regular flat wound strings. The internal metalwork combined with the warm muted effect and silky feel of the wound tape has brought a level of performance and enjoyment I previously only dreamed of. Now, with minimal effort (and little discomfort) I am able to bend notes and achieve a 'slap/picked' sound which adds greater depth and colour to the lines I have been wanting to master. Far from the dull 'thump' I had been expecting they spoke with 'zingy' twang like a Rick on full tone and with a crisp and deep bloom with tone full down. I have always used roundwound strings on my Thunderbird but I decided to give these a go as reviews said they are not 'muddy' sounding which is the usual complaint with flatwound strings. Finishing touch for fretless bass. The strings allow quick movement over the fretboard and continuous slides with a unique sound afforded by the nylon wrapping of the metal strings. Silky smooth sound but still plenty of bottom end. Not as trebly as round wound or half-round and easier on the fingers for sliding than nickel flat-wound. I have used the previous Fender tape wound round wounds for years (7120s) on several basses. I mainly play fretless so having the round wound gets much more bite than typical flat wounds and the tape keeps the fret boards in great shape. I have an old Alembic fretless, a fretless Fender Precision A/E hollow body w/ a buffer pre-amp for the piezos and a fretted franken-p-bass made from various Fender parts and using active EMGs. All sound great. I mainly play through an Ampeg PF500 head and a Mark Bass 2X10 bottom and have had zero issues with these strings. They get a lot of crisp high end and a phenomenal bottom end possibly also due to the fact all three basses are active. Overall a great product and I would definitely recommend them. I usually change them every 6 months. The only thing negative I have found is that the tape kind of starts to get rough, especially on the fretted p-bass after 5-6 months, but I play a lot. I play in a jazz band as well as sitting in constantly w/ various blues players around St Louis so I have no idea how they would be for slap bass or other types of music. I do constantly get positive feedback as far as the sound of my rig. One of the best things about these strings is they are very quiet sliding on a fretless. I wanted to try tapewounds as I was going for a McCartney-ish 60s-70s tone on my P-Bass. These are really nice. Smooth and easy on the fingers. Almost feels fretless. I would say they sound like a broken in set of roundwounds with a touch of flatwound tone. They also bend and slide nicely. It makes you want to play solos above the 12th fret. My only complaint, and it's not a defect in the strings in any way, is that you are not grounded. It's something I didn't think about. When you play regular strings you are grounding the bass by touching them. On the tapewound you are insulated from the metal, so if your bass has any buzz when you arent touching the strings, that buzz will still be there when you play with tapewounds.Chris

This bass is everything anyone could want. You can dial in consistent tones for Jazz, Rock, Blues; anything you can imagine. You're only limited by your amp and skill. Good for novices or pros, and priced for both of them. I play progressive rock/metal, jazz, classical, fusion, etc and the bass lends itself well to all these things. The hardware is solid: the tuners tight, the bridge stable, and the nut functions as prescribed. Some people have problems with the TEK bridge but I personally find it convenient. No cross-talk, easy stringing, reliable setup that DOESN'T BUDGE. The pickup/preamp complements the bass and its resonance qualities. Passive EMG HZ pickups with the mahogany body work together constructively. The bass and treble controls work well with amps, not adding much to the gain of the signal but still affecting the tone strikingly. The body and neck are well constructed and add a lot to the tone. Mahogany+maple+rosewood are the essential dream-team. Access up to the 24th fret is relatively easy. The satin finish allows more vibrations to transfer through the hardware and body. The quality craftsmanship is fairly decent. The fret ends are smooth and all the edges are clean. The factory setup is alright but I like my action low for easy playability. Overall: When I purchased this bass guitar, I did it on a whim based purely off how much I like the sound of Schecter 6 string guitars. I was prepared to be a little disappointed and make a trade in if necessary, but no, I pulled this baby out of the box and fell straight in love from the first ultra twangy acoustic note. A few hours tweaking my Fender Rumble amp (also courtesy of zZounds) and suddenly I had THE sound I had been chasing. The layout of the pot functions were confusing at best but Schecter released an online wiring diagram so a little research got me exactly what I needed; excellent customer support in that regard, but with the quality of this bass, I feel as if I'll never even need to contact customer support in order to give them a review on it! Everything from chunky 90's post-punk to soft jazz to slap bass in tha face to dad rock to death metal to orchestral, just turn a few knobs and this baby knocks it out of the park. There are a few "good" brands of electric guitar strings, and I have always chosen Ernie Ball as my goto set. They cost less, and last just as long as anything else that I have tried so that right there is enough for me. The new Cobalt, and Paradigm series strings are even better in my opinion, and it is the Paradigm that I use on my personal guitars now but for every guitar that I sell (several every month) it is always Cobalt series strings. I live on the Florida coast so anything made of metal is short lived especially guitar strings but the Cobalts do the trick, and last a couple of months for me.zombie415.2009

These strings need no credability having already been used and endorsed by the likes of Eric Clapton and Steve Vai and many more guitar giants. I only recently tried these cobalts and will probably never go back to the standard nickel strings. The big difference you notice right away is the feel of the strings when pressed and played, almost giving the feel of having a scalloped neck. The strings have a sort of elasticity to them, making for easy bending. Just a great feel. The next difference you'll notice is the higher output they give, while in my case actually making each note more distinct and clear at higher gains. Overall: Use these exclusively on my 7 string. Perfect gauge sizing for down tuning; I love tuning to GDGCFAD. As far as "output" I can't really discern any advantage over other strings, but these of course have that great bouncy Ernie ball sound to them. As someone who regularly plays live shows, these strings are my absolute favorite. Super light and easy to bend, and yet not floppy; they produce no unwarranted fret buzz even at extremely low string heights. That being said, they also manage to maintain bright and exciting treble without sacrificing anything significant in the low frequencies. As always, Rotosound has produced a very piano-like set of strings. One of my favorite playing styles is slap bass (incorporating a lot of the Victor Wooten "double thumb"), and these strings make everything easier. I had used Rotosound strings in the past. Flat wound, and did not like them. Just did not care for flat wound strings. I had been using Ernie Ball Slinky but was not really happy with them either. They were hard on the fingers (sharp) and thin sounding I was not getting the "beef" in my sound. I did a nice cleaning of my fretboard and installed the roto bass RB 45's The E string was a bit fatter than I was used to but still very comfortable. The strings were smooth (for round wound) and I was most pleased with the fatter tone overall. Tight clean and no buzz. I believe I will be using these for all future restrings. One minor CON was that for strings marked for long scale the D string was a bit close in length. But that said my Bass, an 80's model Washburn force 4 is a very big and long bass.vicmanjim

Better than expected. Solid tone. Easy to play. Just right. Not too bright, just clean and tight, as a well made set should sound. Lows still great, even at the slightly lighter gauge. Don't get me wrong, they can get plenty bright if you want that. Just that they didn't seem as extra bright as some kinds try to be because they can with all the "super nano ultra special coated infused …but still hand crafted somehow" type stuff. Was never happy with previous sets on my 5 string. With these, I was able to set up with slightly lower action. This alone is worth it on my instrument. Finally, it's the bass it should've always been. Waited way too long to find these. I hope they keep making them. Probably going to order a few extra sets and try to keep a few on hand. As others point out, I'm not sure there's another set with these gauges for 5 strings. To me these are just right in a lot of ways.Person

Overall: Don't pay any attention to the low price these are great strings. Have used Fender 7250's on all kinds of bass guitars they always sound great and feel good. Years of use have proved quality. I put them on my Jazz bass, my PJ, and my Squire, have used them on Samick, Music man, OLP, and Epiphone basses, all good.Scott

Been using the 8250-5M set for awhile. Wanted to try a lighter gauge. I get more guitar tones out of these. I was concerned I might overpower them since I'd used medium gauge for a couple of years. These are literally perfect on my Modern Player Jazz Bass V and 2 1993 Jazz Plus Vs. I bought the Modern Player new from Musiciansfriend. I think this light set is the set that it had on it. I use a pick, single and double thumb as well as two finger picking techniques. The E and B strings give a nice low end. The A, D and G strings have a growl and bright tone and respond well to picking or plucking. I'll be using these strings for some timegeorgesguitars

I've been struggling with the intonation on my Squier vi since I bought it (even with a Staytrem bridge), these strings are a game changer. These strings to me are the ultimate strings for the bass vi. They are expensive but the quality and longevity of the stainless steel will last several years. My Fender VI sounds vintage accurate and the intonation is much better. I recommend the these strings.gsgann

If you're a guitar player who uses a pick, don't worry, the stock strings will be fine. If you play with a pick these strings might take a while to adapt to, but it's not a real issue. If you're planning on playing finger-style bass (like Jack Bruce did when recording "I Feel Free") then these strings are a must-have. You will get more accurate intonation (even more so than with the stock strings) and flats are the way these were strung up in the 60s before some guitar player insisted round-wounds would be better. You should get a spare nut because you will need to file the old nut on the bass side to fit the higher-gauge strings, but your local luthier could recommend what's best for you. I play both guitar and bass and do fingerstyle as well as pick, and I can tell you these strings make it possible for me to do all these and stay 99% in intonation. (to get the other 1% you should look at the recommendations below). Online eBay had the best prices ($50 plus free shipping) than other "strings-for-less" sites that stick you with shipping and handling charges. My seller MUSIC123 has been my go-to for years and they always provide shipping and tracking information with each sale. Their refund policy (unlike others) is also legit. Remember, this is a bass guitar (one octave below low E on guitar) and not a baritone guitar (low B below low E on guitar). These strings won't work on your baritone guitar and you'll ruin the nut and saddle if you try. Other recommended steps: (1) Lock your tremolo! It will make fine-tuning nearly impossible (2) Use bronze washers under the bridge: it'll keep it from rocking back and forth to make your tuning take twice as long as it needs to be. (3) If you rest your right hand on the bridge, BOTH these mods are recommended! (4) you may invest in an after-market bridge if the stock bridge gets hard to intonate. (5) get a clean cloth and wipe down your strings after you play. For that matter, wipe down your whole guitar so that there are no sweat stains left. Flatwounds will last 30-40 years unless you allow your dirty finger/arm oils to rot away the strings and the finish. (6) lemon oil is the best thing to use on your guitar, not spray-wax or other stuff. And you only need a few drops every few sessions or so, so a huge bottle will last beyond your lifetime.
