Bass Guitar String Gauges For Sale (2025 Update)

I have been a Stringjoy customer now for 4-5 years(I think?) and they are the best strings I’ve ever used on my electric guitars! Love the feel of them and the tone. You guys have an amazing thing going. I would love to try them on my resonator guitar(it’s a square-neck). Beard Guitars makes the strings I currently use on it. They’re a little peculiar as far as the gauge goes though. .18-.20-.29W-.36-.45-.56 but I love the tone of that gauge and like Ariel Posen, I like a fight from my strings. I almost ordered a custom set to try when I was ordering my previous sets of electric strings but didn’t see a .29W in bronze. Anyways, I’m very thankful I discovered you guys! I turned to Stringjoy because I wanted a 9-72 8-string set, for which there aren't many options ot there, unless you go for a custom set. I was tempted by the stellar reviews, so I decided to give these a go. Firstly, these are the clearest sounding strings I've ever tried. They're not excessively bright, but their articulation is amazing, which really helps that low F# string ring true. They are almost clear to a fault, because they emphasise every little bit of fret buzz and string rattle, so you have to watch your technique. Secondly, these are the longest lasting uncoated strings I've ever used. After a month of use, they have shown minimal aging. I don't play my 8-string every day, but still, this is impressive. Also, they don't rust, flake or turn black. They just gradually become duller, while still remaining playable. One bit of criticism I have is the tuning stability. These strings seem to need a certain amount of tension to stay in tune. They were fine on my 27" scale 8-string, but when I tried the equivalent set on my 25.5" scale 7-string, bending made them go out of tune very easily. I need to try the 10-60 set and see if it's any better. Overall, I'm very happy with this set for my 8-string, and I have already purchased more. Oh, and one more thing! Normally, whenever I use gauge 72 or higher, I have to partially unwrap the winding to fit the string into its tuning peg. With this set, the lowest string was somehow able to go in as it is. First Class balanced set, perhaps a little bright when new though will be just perfect when played in. This is fender we are talking about, who simply make quality products. The long (standard) scale lenght is perfect for most acoustic bass guitars I have encountered, and if cleaned properly with a branded string cleaner after use will last a long time. I had recently purchased another guage here a Musicians Friend from another brand, & was very satisfied, but was having a bit of a hard time seeing the markings unless in a very well lit room. Then I spotted this. It was a little more expensive, though still very reasonable, & the white markings on black make this much easier to see! Awesome!!James G.

Nice responsive set, good tones. I prefer flatwounds but ridiculously hard to find for my Schechter Hellcat VI. I swapped the "A" string (.074) to the "E" position and added in it's place a (.064) as the Hellcat bridge has a way too tight bore and I want more comfortable playability. I am first a guitar player, then a bass player so making it feel like a down-tuned guitar more comfortable for me. Sounds good, plays fine, just wish either Ernie Ball or D'Addario would make a light guage flatwound set for these Fender Bass VI style axes.John Catfang

I have used these on my custom Maccaferri hollow body bass with a 30" Danelectro neck and they are perfect. I have no idea why others have said these aren't good for a 30" (short scale) bass. Maybe they stuck the high "E" on the "G" post or something, etc. I'm going to use a set on a Fender Bass VI. The price is incredible and they don't chew up your frets like some round wounds. These were described as new, they were not ! Obviously some one had these strings on another bass guitar and for ever reason they did not like and then decided to cut them off. I sometimes get this funny feeling that Stringjoy strings are maybe a little too good. What I mean is after playing guitar for probably more years than the age of most of the people who make these strings, I’ve gotten in the habit of changing strings before each show and/or session. One night before a show, I thought I should change the strings. Took out one of my guitars and strummed it, and thought, “Why?†They sounded nearly as good as when I’d put them on – bright, crisp, full, fresh (the sound I prefer). So I decided to see how long I could play the guitar with before I felt I “had†to change them. Four weeks later (for me that was about 8-10 shows and twice as many rehearsals, I finally felt I had to change them….not because they actually needed it, but more because bad habits are hard to break, especially when it comes to playing guitar, and specifically how often most working guitar players feel they need to change strings. Better than expected. Solid tone. Easy to play. Just right. Not too bright, just clean and tight, as a well made set should sound. Lows still great, even at the slightly lighter gauge. Don't get me wrong, they can get plenty bright if you want that. Just that they didn't seem as extra bright as some kinds try to be because they can with all the "super nano ultra special coated infused …but still hand crafted somehow" type stuff. Was never happy with previous sets on my 5 string. With these, I was able to set up with slightly lower action. This alone is worth it on my instrument. Finally, it's the bass it should've always been. Waited way too long to find these. I hope they keep making them. Probably going to order a few extra sets and try to keep a few on hand. As others point out, I'm not sure there's another set with these gauges for 5 strings. To me these are just right in a lot of ways.Person

Overall: Don't pay any attention to the low price these are great strings. Have used Fender 7250's on all kinds of bass guitars they always sound great and feel good. Years of use have proved quality. I put them on my Jazz bass, my PJ, and my Squire, have used them on Samick, Music man, OLP, and Epiphone basses, all good.Scott

Been using the 8250-5M set for awhile. Wanted to try a lighter gauge. I get more guitar tones out of these. I was concerned I might overpower them since I'd used medium gauge for a couple of years. These are literally perfect on my Modern Player Jazz Bass V and 2 1993 Jazz Plus Vs. I bought the Modern Player new from Musiciansfriend. I think this light set is the set that it had on it. I use a pick, single and double thumb as well as two finger picking techniques. The E and B strings give a nice low end. The A, D and G strings have a growl and bright tone and respond well to picking or plucking. I'll be using these strings for some timegeorgesguitars

Finishing touch for fretless bass. The strings allow quick movement over the fretboard and continuous slides with a unique sound afforded by the nylon wrapping of the metal strings. Silky smooth sound but still plenty of bottom end. Not as trebly as round wound or half-round and easier on the fingers for sliding than nickel flat-wound. First time I have tried Fender strings and I am very impressed. Gauges are good too – 110 in a metal flat-wound was impossible for me to play comfortably but these are great.gre4961

I have used the previous Fender tape wound round wounds for years (7120s) on several basses. I mainly play fretless so having the round wound gets much more bite than typical flat wounds and the tape keeps the fret boards in great shape. I have an old Alembic fretless, a fretless Fender Precision A/E hollow body w/ a buffer pre-amp for the piezos and a fretted franken-p-bass made from various Fender parts and using active EMGs. All sound great. I mainly play through an Ampeg PF500 head and a Mark Bass 2X10 bottom and have had zero issues with these strings. They get a lot of crisp high end and a phenomenal bottom end possibly also due to the fact all three basses are active. Overall a great product and I would definitely recommend them. I usually change them every 6 months. The only thing negative I have found is that the tape kind of starts to get rough, especially on the fretted p-bass after 5-6 months, but I play a lot. I play in a jazz band as well as sitting in constantly w/ various blues players around St Louis so I have no idea how they would be for slap bass or other types of music. I do constantly get positive feedback as far as the sound of my rig. One of the best things about these strings is they are very quiet sliding on a fretless. I keep a couple extra sets around at all times but have never had one break.Steve

I wanted to try tapewounds as I was going for a McCartney-ish 60s-70s tone on my P-Bass. These are really nice. Smooth and easy on the fingers. Almost feels fretless. I would say they sound like a broken in set of roundwounds with a touch of flatwound tone. They also bend and slide nicely. It makes you want to play solos above the 12th fret. My only complaint, and it's not a defect in the strings in any way, is that you are not grounded. It's something I didn't think about. When you play regular strings you are grounding the bass by touching them. On the tapewound you are insulated from the metal, so if your bass has any buzz when you arent touching the strings, that buzz will still be there when you play with tapewounds.Chris

I had Ernie Ball Cobalts on my '78 Fender P-bass for over a year. I've never had flat wounds on any of my bass guitars in my 35 years of playing so I wanted to try a set. The Balls were gauges 100 to 45 so I chose GHS set 3025 (95 to 45) to compensate for the increased tension of flats. But I liked the idea of still having a 45 G-string. The lighter gauge flats still had increased tension but only slightly. I've read about giving these strings a "break-in" period but they sounded really good right out of the package. So far I've had them on about a month and I'm very happy with them. They feel and sound amazing. Nice full low end across all 4 strings. These are keepers for my P-bass.Hutch

I put these on an acoustic-electric bass in an attempt to get a warmer tone that may be closer to tapewound strings with the durability of flats. I would describe the finish on these as satin. I'm sure that there are others on the market that are more polished, but these are comfortable and attractive strings. The silks on these extra-light gauge are purple. With flats, you have more tension than your average round wounds, that is the reason I went with a lighter gauge as to not put extra tension on the neck. The sound is very warm with the E string being not much more than a thump. They seem to be well made and I've only had them on for a week or two, but enjoying them.Matt

Started playing electric bass back when flats were all there was. At that time Fender flats were the best and were used on so many 1960's recordings. They just stood out in the mix. I started using round wounds in 1972, but I always said at some time I'd again have a spare bass with flats. In 2019 I got my spare, for nostalgia, and put Fenders on, but their magic was gone, nowhere near the sound of that 60's punch. When I tried the GHS', there it was and I'm grateful. I have these strings on two bass guitars. Strings work very well with both. Great tone and sustain. Easy on fingers pretty smooth. They also add a great look to your bass They don`t create a lot of Stress on bass neck. Very durable and last long time. Every one has there own preference but after trying all types I still like these strings and they work well with any genre of music. Great value for what they offer.josephm1971

I like them. There a 4 of them. They make a cool sound. Actually they do sound a little zippier than typical bass strings. They are labeled as 105's but feel thinner and have less tension. Still dig them. They turned my fingers purple the 1st day.NATHAN

From the factory, my Fender Squier Vintage Bass VI string gauges were: .084, .072, .056, .044, .034, and .024. I did not specify string gauges when I placed my order, but instead agreed to their recommended sizes, .090, .072, .054, .042, .032, and .024. The sixth string, the .090 one, was just a shade larger than the slot in the nut. However, the instrument seemed to be just fine with the slightly oversized sixth string. And now, a month or so later, I must say that this simple, inexpensive Squier 6-string bass has never sounded or felt so good! I absolutely love playing it. And I bought two sets of strings for this bass, so I expect that it will be quite a long time before I have to buy another set (I only play bass on our church Worship Team 4 or 5 times a year). I usually play 6-string electric guitar. But for my money, you can’t beat the quality, feel, tone or personal custom service of my Stringjoys!Lynn N

I replaced the strings my Squire vi came with with another more well known and expensive brand first and wasn't satisfied with the sound, feel, or action. I gave these a try and they are great! The sound is full and still has that bass vi twang. The low e is now usable and I managed to get a much lower action on my instrument. I haven't tried your strings yet and there's a reason if you'll bear with me: I'm actually stringing an Ibanez SRC6 and it's 3-per-side tuning keys make is a slightly different configuration and winding length requirements than a 6-in-a-row tuners Fender Bass VI. I want to tune my 30-inch scale Ibanez SRC6 (low to high) B-E-A-D-G-E-C, like a long-scale 6-string bass. I want to use it as a bass guitar, not a damn pseudo-guitar! In the late 1970's I successfully used a Fender Bass VI in a rock band with great results (as did Jack Bruce of Cream). The SRC6 comes stock with these gauges: .024/.034/.044/.056/.072/.084. I eliminated the .024 and moved all the stock strings up one, so that my thinnest/highest pitch string is now the .034" I looked online for the highest gauge (thickest) strings with a small ball Bass VI type end I could find for my lowest (thickest) string positions (the B and E strings) while at the same time not knowing how large I could go and still fit through the string-through the body type bridge on the Ibanez. Your stock Bass VI string offerings don't go big (thick) enough to be ideal for lower tuning of the low strings that I desire. I found La Bella Stings make Nickle-Plated Round Wound for Bass VI in .084 for the E or second position, and I tried a .096 for the lowest (thickest) B string position. La Bella makes them even thicker for the Bass VI, but as I said I didn't know how thick I could go and still fit through the bridge hole. As it turned out, I could go a little thicker and still fit through the string-thru bridge hole. The La Bella's worked just okay, but not perfect. The reason is that the winding is scaled for a 6-per-side tuning key Bass VI; so the wound part of the string isn't long enough to wrap around the post on the SRC6, meaning that I only got one wrap of winding around the post on the lowest, or B position, whose string post is closest to the nut; and for the second string or E position I had to wrap the core wire *only* around the post because the wrapped part of the string isn't long enough to even reach the post! I'm sure that Bass VI strings for the third position on my SRC6, the A string, which is even farther from the nut, would be even worse still with only the core wire reaching the post. Not cool! I want to put the heaviest gauge strings possible on my Ibanez SRC6 6-string bass. I haven't found any strings that are ideal yet for my instrument, and your Bass VI offerings don't go thick enough in the lower or thicker end. I'm not sure if the wound area is long enough either for my instruments 3-per-side tuning key configuration either, since like the La Bella's they are designed for a Fender Bass VI. The winding on the La Bellas only needed to be about 3 inches longer to have worked perfectly. So that's what is going on with my quest to find strings for my Ibanez version of the Fender Bass VI, and why I haven't yet tried the strings that I ordered from you. I may order another set from you in heavier gauges for the upper four string positions, but I wish that you made thicker gauges in a Bass VI configuration. Who knows, maybe on your version of Bass VI strings the wound area length might even be a little longer, which is what I need for the lower three string positions in order to get some wrapped string around the tuning post.Frank S

It has a very fundamental tone, good for mahogany guitars. But on rosewood guitars, it may kill off the overtones, which may not be right for some people. Recommended on larger guitars rather than small ones. They do last quite a long time, which helps justify the high price to an extent.J A.

recently asked curt mangan to make me up a custom set of round core monel strings in 12 string configuration. What a great set of strings. I loved monel strings on my maple bodied guitars. But when i saw they had round core available i ordered a set of 6 string strings. They were so good ,i asked about a 12 string set. They dont offer them as of yet, but rep. said they could make me up a set. i askedfor 10- 48,s round core monels, …What a great set of strings. My guild F 412 has always been a stunner tone wise with monel strings. But the round core monels enhanced that 5 x,s .. Btw, ive got over 26 hours of playing on the 6 string set. and no noticeable fall off .Dave Gover

I put these on my Gibson J-55 and man what a difference over the phosphor bronze that came stock. I have yet to put them on my '29/'31 L3 or Custom Shop martin 0018, but I really adore the sound on my J-55. The J-55 has an Adirondack top, mahogany back/sides and is essentially a Gibson version of a Martin D-18 without the super boomy low end. I love these strings and they really bring out the natural woody tone of the guitar, which is how it should be in my opinion. After using these I really like the sound, and in a weird way I'm closer to that guitar than I ever was before, the phosphor bronze that were on the guitar were just too bright and metallic, I prefer the natural earthy tones. I put this guitar in different tunings and these strings really open it up there and in standard tuning as well. I can't wait to put these on my Martin 000, I just got it so the strings on it are fresh but they're 80/20s and I really don't like them. You can't go wrong with these strings. I'm going to be using them on my acoustics forever. Just vintage, natural, woody earthy tones and I couldn't be happier!Antonio

My Mitchell MS450 (single cutaway LP style guitar) came with D'Add's, which sounded decent. When I switched them out, I went with the GHS 10's on a hunch based on things I've heard. Great move! Nice, brilliant tone, rings out for eternity if you let them! I have heard that the GHS 9's are really good on Strat style guitars, so GHS might be my go to on my Squier Strat Classic Vibe next string change.Joe

I used 11's from D'Addario for years and I would break a string consistently for every show that I played. I do not know why I kept with D'Addario for so long. I figured I needed to have a heavier string gauge for durability and better tone. Searched around and came across these strings in the heavy gauge, and I could not be happier with them. These strings have great sustain, are durable, do not corrode as quickly as other brands I have used in my professional career playing music, and, despite their heaviness, are easy to play in standard tuning. Along with playing well with a pick and fingers, these strings also sound terrific when playing slide. You can get the same great tones out of these strings that Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have with their lighter gauges, as well as channeling the fat tones that you hear from Duane Allman from the Fillmore East show. Great Garcia tones can come from these strings as well. Basically what I am saying is that you can still get those classic guitar sounds on these heavy strings without feeling like your losing tone or playing opportunities utilized by the players that inspire you who may use lighter string gauges. These strings also (as far as I know) have a round core instead of a hex core. I think that might be a reason why these strings have so much sustain, especially when you have some distortion or overdrive keeping them warm while playing lead. If you are on the fence about getting these, I recommend you give them a try just see how they work for you. They are no that expensive and its worth it to figure out what works for you as a player. Feeling confidence in the gear you use is so essential to being comfortable on stage. Buy a pack and see what happens. You might find yourself just what you've been looking for.JFromJUNCO

I used to use Boomers for about 10 years, on all my electrics (9s). Until arthritis started creeping in. Switched to EB slinky 8s, and playing became much easier. Everything still had a huge sound, but previous order added a test set of the Boomer 8.5s for my Gibson Les Paul goldtop with P90s. Took a while to get used to the rougher feel compared with the EB 8s. But will probably order another set for the goldtop, and a set for my ES295.Joe S.

As I play a fretless, I like these strings! They don't chew up the fretboard like round rounds do, and they have almost as much snap to the tone, which flat wounds don't have any. I like these better that the ground would as well.fxlrc93
