Age old design that is only now becoming a bit dated. Still I think at the right money this hard to beatindiadog1
This really is an astonishing bass. Superb build quality, first class hardware and electronics (Wilkinson) and it sounds fantastic! I have heard fellow musicians rave about the bang for buck of Vintage brand guitars, now I know why! Playable action and intonation out of the box. But with a couple of minor tweaks it is now superb! I have a hankering for an SG type 6 string. After this experience, I think it is going to be a Vintage VS6. Unbelievable value!S. H.

I Test drove this at GC yesterday a good/great instrument is a sum of all its parts. If this guitar was judged by everything but its electronics it would be a 4 to 5 star hands down. Charvel A.K.A Fender should be ashamed of themselves for still not having Fixed the preamp in the Charvel basses still extremely noisy. The pickups also are very lackluster on the PJ V. Part of the noise issues of the PJ 4 is the pickups are very hot and the bobbins are not coated thus introduce noise into the output. The pickups on the PJ V are not hot rather tame actually and if I bought this bass they would have to be replaced. Although some might like the old school tone of the Area J not I. The winner on this bass as the PJ 4 is the neck and body extremely comfortable and light weight. Unfortunately to get this bass right you'd have to replace the Preamp (which I did on my PJ 4 with a Audere Classic) and at minimum replace the neck pickup if not both. So, once you buy parts and the installation charge you're now well into the $1800.00 USD price range and with so many other Great 5 strings basses out there from $750.00 to $1200.00 why waste your time and money on instrument that needs to modified to get it right. When you can get great bass after a Pro-setup that is spot-on for far less money. I was excited about this bass but I'll pass. Also, the black sparkle paint job wasn't nearly as nice as the blue just another strike against this guitar.MaxiFunk

Reviews:
I just completed my Mod 102 kit. An excellent experience! I was delighted with the quality of components, clarity of instructions, and, perhaps most importantly, the sound of the amp. It is very loud – currently running into my Fender Twin Reverb cab (2×12) and very sweet! I will be running it into a new 1×12 cab with a new Celestion G12 M Heritage 'Greenback' when I get a case for the speaker (on order). My only criticism (and something to look out for) is that the chassis is very nicely painted in gray gunmetal paint. Even following the directions to file all the holes, it is very hard to get a good ground connection at every point a terminal strip connects. I worried about this, and about 1/3rd of the way through the build, took an ohm meter to check all the connections, and as I had suspected, some of the connections were not great (9-10 ohms or so!) So I removed the terminal strips (with the components I had already soldered still attached) and scraped away the paint under the tabs of the strips to ensure a good connection. Re-testing showed virtually zero resistance. I'd strongly recommend scraping the paint away at all holes under the chassis before getting started on the build. Even better, suggest that Amplified Parts leave the inside chassis unpainted (at least around the important holes). Aside that one criticism, I am delighted with the kit and with Amplified Parts. Everything was delivered promptly and they are a class outift. I'll probably try some of their other kits soon.vpmerlyn
I spent three evenings building the MOD102. The instructions are very easy to understand and the amp has a great Fender sound. I had one grounding issue that was easily fixed with a little help from tech support, which was excellent. If you're good at following step by step instructions and can solder well this is a fun little amp to build. Only small issue is the labels. They could stand an improvement.Brandon
I just finished this amp build and it sounds fantastic! I also just finished a Marshall 18 Watt clone and I have to say that the Mod102+ holds its own very nicely alongside the Marshall. In fact, I will probably use the Mod102+ for recording because it sounds amazing at lower volumes (the Marshall is loud AF). Honestly, if I were only going to build one of them today, it would be the Mod. I'm blown away by the tone! Great kit with excellent instructions. Great bang for the buck. The parts all seem to be top quality. I love the old style cloth solid core wire, too. I find it much easier to work with than modern stranded wire. The labels are a bit lame but I covered them with packing tape as suggested before cutting them out and they look fine. If you're thinking about building an amp, build this one.danjbeckett

Fitted Perfectly with the RockboardIan F.
An excellent module that works perfectly and enables efficient and tidy cabling. One minor criticism . . It should come with a male to female power adaptor to run from the back of the module to the power supply. Slightly annoying that I had to source this cable separately and the module is not fully functional without it.Peter W.

Reviews:
For the life of me I can't understand how the bass vi spent so much time in the shadows of obscurity. This is the most useful bass I've ever played: in the right hands it fills the gap in the chordal range that usually is missing between guitar & bass. I'm talking about chords usually reserved for the piano. Its just amazing to open up this end of the spectrum. As a straight bass the low end is all the way there, guitar players should be advised: you can definitely blow out your guitar amp with this thing. It is a bass and can cover all of the bass's traditional roles. The cons: it is a Squier so dont expect the cleanest finish. Mine came with some irregularites in the neck finish but the neck is straight and it played pretty well right out of the box. The binding on the neck is a little sloppy but minor and purely cosmetic. My volume pot came jacked & only useful for the last quarter turn but thats an easy fix. PUPs sound better than I expected and dont need to be upgraded. I will replace the bridge before anything else. All in all for the money you cant beat this instrument. Stoked Squier made this instrument affordable with the classic jazzmaster/ jag looks.Lazybullet
The Squier Bass VI materials and workmanship are excellent, its sound is clear, strong and extremely variable. It plays great, feels good to hold and while covering anything a regular bass can do, offers an upper extension even to chording. Personal setup is quick and easy. The supplied .024-.084 round wound strings sound and play well though the E6 can be a bit slappy and requires a bit of finesse to master cleanly. However, LaBella offers custom round wound and .026-.095 flat wound sets and the neck responds well to truss rod adjustments so the bass is not a one trick pony nor limited in usefulness. The only conundrum concerns installing the Trem Arm. There is no user guide in print or online to describe its installation. It doesn't screw in and no matter how hard pushed into its collar, it just won't fit into the internal collet. So far, query to Fender has been acknowledged but unanswered, but they do have a toll-free support line which is the next course of action. As one experienced with vintage American Jaguars and knowledgeable of these Trem Systems and Fender in general, I find this unusual but just a bump on the road to sonic bliss. This is an incredible deal on a vintage type reissue of the Fender VI and overall, as well as in all the usual specific respects, the instrument is excellent and of the highest order.Larz
Opened and found a beautiful instrument that played pretty well before set up. All finishes were good with the exception of a slightly noticeable marking on the lower body(mine is white). BUT, this instrument is so well made otherwise, it's not worth complaining about. I performed a slight neck adjustment that was easy to perform. Neck finger board action is great. Tone is where instrument really shines. It has three pickups and with the combinations, the sounds are varied and complex. There is a forth switch which changes the bass dynamics keeping the tones brighter for a very haunting sound. I'm primarily a guitar player that uses drop "D" for tune choices. This new guitar gives me all the other creative choices I wished for further expanding my playing options. The only complaint I have is the Fender bass case that was recommended by MF that I purchased that can not be used with this guitar as it had a molded interior that prevents the guitar from fitting inside at all. MF needs to know their product better before making such a recommendation. I am confident MF will get me the proper hard shell case for it since Fender is now advertising one specifically for it. The Fender item # is 0068076000.Nowforontheverge
6. Michael Kelly Custom Collection Element 5r Burl Electric Bass
Product Details:
The custom collection element 5r bass is an upgraded version of the standard custom collection bass guitars, featuring a roasted maple neck and head, pau ferro fretboard, and a striking buckeye burl top over the lightweight indonesian mahogany body. the body still has all the comfort features like the arm and belly cut you have come to expect from michael kelly. the impact of a bridge on the performance of a bass guitar is something that people too often underestimate. michael kelly uses a solid molded bridge with tight slots for each fully-adjustable saddle, a big enhancement on its own. under that bridge is an aluminum tone block, adding sustain and attack. since it is aluminum, it does not add weight to the bass, but has a similar sonic impact to using a heavy bridge. michael kelly calls this bridge-and-internal-block combination the mk stealth attack bridge system. in addition to the upgraded neck and stealth attack bridge system, this guitar includes an element active circuit electronics, utilizing a push/pull volume pot to switch from active to passive modes. michael kelly also added a pickup blend knob in place of the 3 way toggle switch, giving you loads more control over your tones. add to that separate bass and treble controls, and rockfield 5sw pickups that are specially voiced for the element basses, and you have a super comfortable, lightweight, highly playable and fully controlled tone monster.

Overall: I love the sound and playability of this wonderful instrument. My only complaint is with FedEx, they delivered a day late and at 10pm. they did not walk it up tp the door they left it in the middle of a driveway I share with a neighbor and left with no notification. I just happened to hear their door slam. I opened the front door as they left. I walked out to the driveway and stepped on the package because it was so dark. Fortunately the instrument was not damaged.Micheal

When you can get great bass after a Pro-setup that is spot-on for far less money. I was excited about this bass but I'll pass. Also, the black sparkle paint job wasn't nearly as nice as the blue just another strike against this guitar.MaxiFunk
FENDER/CHARVEL the fact that you have not improved the grounding and shielding issues of the components and cavities its sheer neglect to your customers. 11 months later to make no strides to improve the well documented issues with the quality control of these bass guitars has lead to ne never buy another Fender or any brands you own ever again. 2nd time this year I bought a product from you that has to be modified. At this price point there should be no need to modify these basses except for personal preference. No wonder Sire is killing you market share in the bass world.Maxi funk
Very Happy with purchase, very good bass to have in your collection, well built nice modern and vintage tones can be dialed in. My advice change the strings the bass was a little bright with the factory strings. Very comfortable and fast neck easy to play down the neck. Hats off to AMS service very helpful and knowledgeable!Tom

Reviews:
Mine came with a warped neck, body is super soft and easily dings, and finish as you would expect is consistent with most low cost cost Asian basses. Electronics also. Required a lengthy setup but still could not optimize with bad neck. There are better options in a beginner bass. The Rondo SX and the lower end Ibanez lefty basses are just two examples.kraigster414

10. Regal Rd-05 Studio Series Resophonic Bass Traditional Sunburst
Product Details:
An old favorite has just returned to the regal line of resophonic guitars-it's the regal rd-05 acoustic bass guitar! the regal rd-05 is the acoustic bass you can hear in any playing situation with a deep, rich tone that can be heard above all the other instruments. it responds just as well in the studio as it responds on the stage and the built-in resonator cone amplifying system gives you as big a tone as many conventional acoustic basses. however the rd-05 is somewhat compact and easy to manage unlike those large and cumbersome acoustic basses.

Reviews:
This Bass sounds amzing!! great tone. Loudest acustic bass i haver heard. The issue is the first one i recevied one of the chrome "speaker looking ports" only had a small amount of glue holding it in in one spot. when it came off it took some of the finish with it. had it for an hour and sent it back. Just recevied my replacement looked over the whole and all parts are solid and in place. Then I while playing it I noticed at the top of the neck where the top F frett is on the neck looks like the clear coat is cracked. Not sure if the neck is or not. So as soon as these are bvack in stock I will send this one back and try a third time. If the next one ios good then cool. If not Regal can keep there bass. MF has been good about replacing and shipping just a pain and HUGE hassle. Bottom line sounds Great! Chia built.Chili514p

Reviews:
This is a good bass that I picked up as a beater and will probably use more than just for that. For active electronics and the cost, I figured it would be worth any set up that other reviews complained about. Mine didn't require any setup at all. However, there was a really noticeable chip off the paint on the headstock, and I bought new, not scratch and dent. It took two weeks to ship and I didn't want to go through a return process and get a less playable return, so I called Musician's Friend and asked for a rebate. They only gave ten, but I got it on sale and took the deal. As for the play-ability of this bass, it rocks right up there with a lot of basses three times the cost. It's a really easy to play setup, easy to navigate neck and gives nice indie rock bass tones out of the box, at least for me.Rev. Sal
I bought this for my son for his birth day a year and a half ago. I myself have played bass for over 30 years. I have had this thing professionally set up twice. Fretts needed dressed, action was way too high right out of the box. Electronics are fairly decent and playability is good after a set up. He is happy but already seeking a better bass.Scott
i bought it used, so that may affect my review but the bass was fairly easy to play, but the tuning was an issue. it would stay in tune but the pegs were kinda loose. i should note that this bass has ACTIVE PICKUPS. Meaning it takes a 9v battery to power. Not a big deal but you can't really play the bass without a battery. And if you forget to turn the volume knob all the way down, the battery will drain overnight and be complete dead before you pick the bass back up again. Would i recommend this to someone? yes but if they are beginning to learn how to play the instrument.zach m

Reviews:
I purchased my left-handed Glarry Jazz bass back in July of 2020 as a way of keeping occupied during the lockdown, after nearly 2 years I'm still as blown away as the day it first arrived. This bass is a *beast*! It sounds incredible, very little adjustments were needed right out of the box, I lowered the action on one string a little & that's it. The thing that really impresses me in an ongoing way is this bass *insists* on remaining completely in tune almost indefinitely, I have a digital, highly-accurate tuner & this instrument rarely strays from being in tune even after lengthy practice. I find myself wondering how Glarry can possibly make money here. I've also, based on my experience with the bass, purchased a left handed strat copy in a matching finish, & also a Glarry kid's drumset, and am completely happy with my purchases. Thank you Glarry, you guys rock!
After hearing a lot of positives about Glarry basses I decided to take the plunge and order one. Unfortunately, I cannot report that I find it to be an amazing value as some have reported. The main problem is the neck. Out of the box the action was set quite high and the usual setup adjustments reveal that the frets are in serious need of a level and dressing. Besides the unpleasant fret fart outs, I notice a fair amount of odd resonances that seems to be originating from the neck on various notes. I can't tell if a good fret leveling would eliminate them or if it is something related to the truss rod internally. The truss rod does work, but turns WAY more easily than any other bass I've ever owned. (Probably 2 dozen over 40 plus years.) The body is good, finish is nice, and the electronics and hardware are serviceable. For the hundred-ish I spent, I'll keep it as a mod bass and replace the neck. Be forewarned: the original neck is a VERY chunky P-Bass width and nowhere near the normal streamlined Jazz Bass neck found on most Jazz basses and Jazz bass copies. Not sure this would be a good starter bass without taking it in for a good setup and fret leveling. In my neck of the woods that would cost about $150.00. Perhaps a better alternative would be to see what you can get in the $200- $300 range that comes ready to play out of the box. As always, YMMV.
I liked the affordable price and the look of the blue sunburst jazz bass. My plan was to completely modify it which I did. I sanded and stained the neck a darker color, applied several coats of polyurethane and a final coat of paste wax. The electronics were upgraded to alpha pots, braided wires and alnico5 pickups, a new wilkinson brass saddle bridge, black machine tuners, bone nut, black jazz bass volume/tone knobs, flat wound strings and a tortoise shell pickguard. While this instrument is completely fine for a beginner, I am more of a seasoned player and was up to the challenge of a fun project. Could I suggest maybe selling only bare body and neck without parts at a lower price which people could build their own instrument to their personal taste? Also, the internet is a wonderful place for information if someone knows where to look, but a beginner might not understand how or even if they need to adjust their truss rod or bridge saddles. Perhaps an included instruction booklet might also be useful as these instruments are catering towards beginners. I also modified a Glarry white P bass in a similar way but less extensive as the jazz. I had a lot of fun with these projects.

Reviews:
Bought this on a whim after demoing a good portion of the basses on the store wall. This one had better sound than most of the basses I played at a price that doesn't break the bank. Bought this a week after buying a high end bass as the Musicman sound is what I was after. The bass is on the heavy side, but so are my high end basses. I do plan to swap out the 5-way switch, bridge, tuners, and nut down the road. But for now I'll use this to jam and record as it's great out of the box. No visual imperfections that I can find on it.Musicman

18. Fretguru Fret Crowning File Dagger 2.0 Professional Guitar Luthier Tool Electric Acoustic Bass
Product Details:
Fretguru fret crowning file °dagger 2.0° professional guitar luthier tool electric acoustic bass the original fretguru crowning file quickly became the highest rated, best selling file on amazon. this didn’t stop us from completely re-engineering it, resulting in a unbelievable performance improvement. at the heart of this file is the fretguru exclusive d.i.a. (dual integrated arc) cutting geometry, which gives you far more precise cutting control, accuracy and finish than any other file – especially diamond files – guaranteed! experienced guitar geeks know there's an ideal-yet-elusive "holy grail" for the way a fret crowning file should cut, where the file never touches the center line or "peak" of the fret top until the last few file strokes. this is especially true with freshly leveled frets, as you don't want to disturb the perfectly level "plane" you've just created by indiscriminately removing material from the fret tops with a crowning file. ideally you want to leave the finest sliver of leveled fret along the centerline which is then polished out. diamond files are especially guilty of this – with the random way diamond grains are applied to the cutting groove, and the stray grains that stick up higher than the surrounding grit. i've wrestled for 5 years with how to accomplish this, with machinists and toolmakers just scratching their heads when i told them what the goals were and what i wanted to do. the problem with every other fret crowning file, it that they are all made using standard off-the-shelf tooling – typically ball end mills – that are only available in standard size increments, and more importantly, only available as a perfect sphere shape. but one day the "lightbulb" went off, and i ran the idea by one of the top cnc toolmakers in the country. he still didn't think it would work, but reluctantly agreed to make a prototype tool… with no guarantee, that cost more than 2 years supply of our normal tools. and the results were mind- blowing, better than i could have imagined! try it for yourself. product features dual sided – the ideal size and shape for acoustic and vintage electric guitars (medium/large side), and modern electric guitars, or those with jumbo and super jumbo frets (large/xl side) fretguru exclusive d.i.a. (dual integrated arc) cutting geometry gives you more precise cutting control and leaves a finer finish than any other fret file – guaranteed! gives you control, accuracy and finish that no other file (especially diamond files) can touch professional grade file with premium quality hardened european tool steel gives longest life, with perfectly formed and razor sharp teeth leaves a clean, ready-to-be-polished cut contoured and beveled inner and outer edges to prevent damage to your frets and fingerboard, and allow maximum clearance between the file and wood perfectly formed teeth shape and cutting groove geometry = precise frets = your guitar plays like butta and sounds even sweeter
