This is an ingenious and useful tool to have. I bought this along with a Fret Rocker and proceeded to go through all the frets on my guitars and basses.. Unlike a fret file I would think it almost impossible to go to far when talking a fret down.if your careful with this. The grit seems just right to do the job and this sanding bar seems to conform to the fret just enough to where there is no re crowning needed. I simply start at the first fret with the Fret Rocker and move back up the neck three frets at a time marking frets or parts of frets that are high with a Sharpie. Then I take the fret guards supplied with this kit and tape them down to the fret with masking tape and carefully file until the Fret Rocker says I'm good and then I move on. The con to this not being a fret file is that these sanding bards don't last forever. They do wear down but I found that if I rinse them after use to remove all the metal particles and let it dry it lasts a lot longer. I did three guitars and two basses with one stick and it worked fantastically. When I'm done with the sanding bar I take some fine steel wool and polish and you'd swear the frets were brand new. The benefit of course is that on every guitar and bass I was able to bring the string action down at the saddles anywhere from 3/4to 2 full turns which made the playability of those guitars and basses even more of a pleasure and made intonation just that more accurate. I've just purchased several more of these kits just in case this company should ever go out of business because it is something that works and I can't believe that until now that nobody has ever thought of this. This file is a real bargain. I used it right out of the box to dress the ends of a refret I have in my shop. I'm impressed that the file's edges are "safe" and do not mark the fretboard. The barrel of the file is mounted in what appears to me as solid brass and rosewood looking wood handle. The file is heavy and feels very substantial in my hand.
