I could spend all day yapping about this pedal…In my travels i've tried countless pedals, but got tired of having 'too many' pedals. The weight, the time it took to hook it all up. I also busk, or play where electricity isn't available, and wanted a setup where i could make one trip with everything, and keep the weight down. I've always been a fan of ZOOM products, so trying out the Multistomp series was a no-brainer for me. The 50G met all my requirements, and exceed them all after i got one and started using it. Tones that are as good as any higher priced pedal, the versatility is second to none, and the price is killer for what this pedal can do. I would say the the Bluetooth version was my favorite, then the 70CDR, then the 50G, with the 50G's new 3.0 update, the 50 G is now my favorite pedal…period. The 50G started with maybe 50 patches, now it has 172, and best of all it has the Exciter patch, which to me is required on any pedal board. All i can suggest is watch the countless demo videos of this pedal. I would recommend this pedal for any level of guitarist, i would also recommend the MS-70CDR, watch the demo videos of the 70-CDR vs Strymons…amazing I cant say enough good things about the 50G, i believe it's near the perfect all around pedal. The MS-50G pedal is first class. It is every bit as clean, quiet, and well built as the Boss pedals. It is not a replacement for the Boss line. Zoom pedals have a character of their own. Personally, I like the Zoom tone. But I'm not a guitar player. There is a great ~15 minute YouTube instructional video for the MS-50G. I got over the learning curve for writing and storing effects by watching this video, then I bought pedal. It replaces several pieces of my high quality studio gear when I need fast results that are of high level audio quality. Zoom delivers with this product. After I watched this video I purchased the pedal. I also like my G1X as a companion to this pedal. The G1X has a nice volume/expression pedal.Sean
I needed something for my living room and practicing while watching TV late at night without a full pedal board or multi-effects box. This along with a Boss RC-3 and a mini mixer for my wireless headphones provides everything I have in my studio at a mini level. The sounds are good enough. There are enough options in sound to play most anything. Eventually I'll try this little beast as a sub for my full pedal board and see how it works in a live jam. One pedal to do everything. It's not perfect but it is great. I wish Zoom would provide updates to it and a better manager. It's pretty old by today's standards and if Zoom provided updated files they would sell even more if these great little boxes. Super cool and versatile distortion. the noise gate, extremely powerful mid control, and weight knob features allow you to dial in a range of high gain sounds from van halen to meshuggah – it even is very useful in less heavy styles of music. it's a double barrel pedal (the same circuit twice), so you can have two drastically different distortions on tap with ease. also a great tool in the studio. definitely worth the hype and price.i bought it mint and used it on maybe 3 gigs. i'm selling because the band i was using it for broke up so i no longer have a use for it. listing as "excellent" instead of "mint" because i removed the rubber feet to more easily mount to a pedal board and then promptly misplaced them. there is also a small amount of velcro residue (see picture). comes with original box, foam padding, users manual, and empress sticker.

Have still to explore all the tonal possibilities of this aptly-named dual distortion pedal but first impressions have been very positive. The unit is smaller and lighter than I expected but the two foot switches are well separated. With six controls for each channel plus shared 'hi' and 'lo' EQ there are plenty of tone-shaping options. The user manual helpfully suggests some settings to get you started. The internal noise gate has so far proved very effective left on the 'natural' setting. You can adjust the threshold to suit your guitar's output, but having used the pedal with guitars loaded with vintage, medium output and hot humbuckers, I've found no need to alter the default factory setting. If you're in the market for a versatile high-gain distortion pedal I would strongly recommend taking a look at this one.Christopher D.

It arrived a few days ago from MF. I want to highlight what I like about it without repeating the contents of its manual. Bottom line, for my usage replacing a Fender black panel Deluxe, a spring reverb, and a Tube Screamer, it is excellent. I am using the Vibro King amp model for most of my tweaking, but I also set up the Twin Reverb (super clean), Super Reverb, and Marshall JCM800 (crunch even with the guitar volume relatively low). The Twin model would not distort without a boost included in the "scene" even with my guitar and the model volumes at 10. That was the one anomaly from my expectations. I like the Vibro King model, amplified by my QSC CP8 (on the floor, on its side, backside EQ set to floor monitor), and do not prefer my now sold Tone Master Deluxe. The first thing I did was download the 2022-10-31 Firmware update and install it. Instructions to put the pedal in "DFU" mode to accept the update were missing. A YouTube video found via Google explained to hold both foot switches while powering up. Next, I installed the main NuX App for my Mac. I disabled the third "scene" such that the "scene foot switch" becomes a "scene" toggle (one cleaner, one with the Tube Screamer engaged, both with spring reverb). I then went through the amp models I planned to use (two "scenes" each, which must be done individually) and set all the controls to 12 o'clock. I tweaked the amp, spring reverb, and Tube Screamer to taste. I now have three ways to boost for an overdriven solo starting with the Vibro King as my clean base: turn up the guitar, foot switch to the Tube Screamer "scene", or foot switch to the JCM800 amp model. I explain all this detail because it took about an hour and without this work the pedal is disappointing. The software was almost easy enough to use without the nonexistent manuals (to do it again it would take much less time). Once done, everything can be adjusted via the knobs and optionally saved with the left foot switch. No menus to navigate at a gig. You can see in the pictures that it is quite small (Tube Screamer for reference), weighs exactly 1 lb. (less than that Tube Screamer), and draws only 3 watts. Leaving it run over night only gets it to room temperature. My old HX Stomp would have been hot to the touch and required a 20-watt power supply. Is it a Universal Audio quality Twin Reverb, Super Reverb, JCM800, or Vibro King modeler? Impossible for me to know. But for what I want, a classic black panel 60s Fender amp tone, spring reverb, and foot switchable Tube Screamer, it is a complete solution in a small package. No aspect of IO is missing (XLR, USB-C, ¼", 3.5mm, MIDI over USB). It also has an effects loop, graphic EQ, all the usual reverb types, 1024 IR loader, a selection of boost/overdrive/compression pedal models, and a noise gate which I've not tried. If one of the amp models is acceptably flat response you could use its 1024 IR loader, reverb collection, and compressor collection for your acoustic guitar too. Wow! What's missing? For my usage a master volume not associated or saved with an amp model "scene" would be nice. It does make a click when switching amp models or "scenes". Sometimes when switching amp models there is a noticeable delay.Jon

I've got both the GT-1 and the GT-1B units and they are so different. I don't know why, but I find the bass unit much easier to use. The effects shapes that you want are so much easier to dial in. Maybe it's something to do with the distortion types that each unit tries to emulate – you get loads on the GT-1 and only a few on the GT-1B. And the amp emulations too – you get maybe 1/2 – 2/3 on the bass unit. What I would say is that it is well worth spending some time doing a deep-dive of the sounds you can get out of this unit. There's not much help here, you will have to grind to get the sound you want, but it probably will be there somewhere. The Boss Tone sounds lab will only get you so far and there really aren't any shortcuts that I've found to the sort of tone I want for any specific patch. It's worth spending the time noodling around with the unit and at least you can set up a load of blank presets by whatever category you want (I set up amp emulators in 10-set batches). Would I buy it again? Yep, absolutely. If you asked me that about the GT-1, I might not be so sure.Cat F.
The BOSS GT-1B is a really great piece of kit. Was obsessing with synth pedals but couldn't decide which one and then would require an expression pedal etc. The Boss SY-1 doesn't offer presets. I'm pleased with the GT-1B – many many possibilities for designing patches, built in expression pedal & 99 presets. Loads of PROS – Great value. The potential options for combining effects is vast. The build is great, knobs & buttons work easily. I dont use it as a standalone but combine with some analogue pedals, which is a good set up. Still saves plenty of space on pedalboard. CONS – you have to put some graft to get familiar with the software and best usage. There are instructions for the basic operation, using the buttons/dials on the unit but to get the full hang of the software for assigning parameters within patches, BOSS do not supply much info. There are some useful vids online though and chat on talkbass etc – Octave fx doesn't always track brilliantly. Is OK and perfectly usable, but not long sustain. – The Synth fx can be a bit OTT & erratic, if up too high. But great synth type sounds achieved with combining envelope, fuzz, octave, wave etc I haven't used any other effects processor so can't directly compare, but the unit has more than surpassed my main reasons for buying it. Delivers six different ways to color tone in a single box, for a rock-bottom price. You can use one at at time, which is really no drawback– just buy another one of these if you want to chain them. Experienced pedal users may have effects that are superior. But I'm a low-rent guy in a high-stress world, with no prior experience in pedals or tone shaping, and for me this is a gem. Instant therapy. A lot of fun, finding sounds that I've heard on songs and always wondered how people made them. I don't find it to be very noisy at the volumes employed in my apartment (duh), and a noise gate in my chain makes it virtually silent. The build quality is not an issue for me, at least so far. I won't be abusing it, and for the price, if I somehow manage to break the case… it's not a tragedy. It's a cool box for people like me who want inexpensive access to the world of effects. You get what you pay for. This pedal is fun to experiment with. Some effects are really good, others are not. The Flanger needs a high-cut filter. The Phaser is kinda weak and it sucks your tone. The chorus is really good. The delay would be really good, but it won't go slow enough for me. So I don't see myself using it. I don't like the Tremolo effect, but it seems to work fine in this pedal. The Pitch Shifter was my favorite effect in this pedal. It is sensitive to adjustments, but once I had it carefully dialed-in, it sounded great. The Level knob works great. It seems to blend the original signal with the selected effect nicely, without dropping the volume or sucking your tone. I use this pedal in the effects-loop of my amp head. The two parameter knobs seem to have a pretty big range. They go from subtle, to really wild. It takes some time to carefully adjust them to get the sound you are looking for. The knobs feel stiff when you turn them, which is nice. They will stay where you set them. Construction is plastic, so this pedal is not too durable, but it will be fine for home use. Overall, this pedal is great for the price. It has plenty of use-able sounds in it, but some of the effects are not perfect. This pedal would be great for new players, because it allows them to experiment with different effects to see what they like, and it doesn't cost much. I use a 1-spot power adapter with it, which works great.
This is a very good unit for it's price. I purchased it for my "little" amp when I go to friends place's to jam. My "big" amp has the same effects in it & are better. However, it does do the job I purchased it for. It is well made in China under German supervision. The Germans don't do rubbish products & that's what made me check it out. I'm not complaining about it at all, this is one of those "horses for courses" items. I have another pedal that does what this one does & more but it cost three times what this did. I'd recommend this to anyone that wants those effects but doesn't want to pay close to $200. My last remark is "you can't beat it for the price"Roger R.

From slight dirt to full on creamy plexi distortion. It’s all there. Cleans up with the guitar volume knob. Pairs well with other exotic effects. I have two SL drives, one for grit and the other set for lead, as well as an exotic AC booster before to add a bit of boost. I run the EP booster at the end for nice volume boost. I chose the SL Drive from a huge amount of drives on the market as I wanted something that fit on a small pedalboard, could provide a Marshall style sound at all gain levels as an alternative to amp gain, and which could work well with the BB MB pre-amp also by Xotic. This pedal really delivers. Although it takes time to set up and find the best sounds for personal preference, it provides a variety of useful tones across the spectra of volume, gain, and equalisation. The design is just so thoughtful and I like the possibility of running it at 18v, although at the moment 9v is better to my ears. I've had the SL drive for awhile now and try as I might I can't find anything that can kick it off my board. I've tried numerous other amp in a box pedals(Marshall and otherwise),overdrives and distortions but I keep coming back to this little guy. I guess I keep trying because I find it hard to believe that a pedal this small and this inexpensive(relatively) can't be outdone. Best price in town on a great little piece of equipment. Honestly, it's amazing what tech is doing these days. This unit is fully staged worthy and has nearly everything anyone could want. There is a learning curve to the unit but it isn't too bad. It isn't perfect out of the box but can be tweaked to preference. Many of the presets are great and as good launch point for sounds you are looking for. As for delivery, my unit came very fast. The GP-200 is a very flexible multi-effects/modeler whose price may suggest something of lower quality, but it's actually a great-sounding and fun unit. I play acoustic and electric guitar with an Acoustasonic Telecaster, and the GP-200 works great for both sounds. You get what's probably hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of amps, effects, and cabinets for a fraction of the cost. The factory presets probably aren't for most people, but the fun is in creating your own anyway. I definitely recommend using the PC/Mac software for this, as it's a little easier on the eyes and a bit more intuitive as far as the interface goes, but working with the unit itself just takes a little time and experimenting to get used to as the documentation isn't as detailed as it could be for the depth of options available. The acoustic guitar IRs are helpful for buffing up a standard piezo pickup; they won't fill anyone into thinking that your $200 guitar is a vintage Martin or whatnot, but they do bring a bit more depth to the sound. I find them a bit brittle-sounding, but perhaps with more EQ tweaking I could minimize that. I highly recommend this unit for people who want a good, flexible modeling solution without paying thousands. I haven't had the opportunity to play with big-name modelers, but this will definitely do the trick for most.Josh

Knobs, knobs, and more knobs! And I love it! I have played with all sorts of stomps boxes trying to come up with just the right combination. I just bought a Boss ME-50 Multi effects pedal for my guitar. I specifically bought this one as a back up. It was used but very well taken care of, in fact it looked brand new when I received it. I plugged it in and it works perfect. It actually sounds better than the one I have been using for my gigs. Everything was as specified. Upgraded to this unit from a Pod XT Pro rack. This unit not only has amazing and better sounds but more flexible options and a wider array of effects and amps. Pros: -Sound is stunning. I've not done a side-by-side with a real amp mic'ed with a specific mic in a certain position, but it's utterly convincing to my ears. -Blocks can be re-ordered without restriction. For example, want to daisy chain two amps to get that "you really got me" sound? You can do it and it actually works. -Multiple outs and routing -Flexible pedal assignments. You can connect up another two external footswitches (or exp pedals) and assign to any block. OR, you can assign more than one block to a single pedal (so you could activate a tube screamer, digital delay, and anything else with a single press ready for your solo). OR, you can just use a snapshot and change dozens of parameters with a single press. No more "dancing" around the pedal board, hitting the wrong pedals in the process, looking like an utter berk etc. -Preset sounds with flexible ways to work through them. At a gig I don't have time to change an abundance of settings so have a preset for each song. Sound completely changed in half a second. Next song started without hesitation. -All functions of the unit look like they can be configured through the front panel without having to use the Windows or MAC editor. Cons -Terrible, terrible power supply brick. I can't believe Line 6 sell it like this. They even know it's rubbish – the manual says something to the effect of: "we know the power supply is big but it needs to be special to give you enough juice". Big is not the problem – being stuck upwards in the air from your mains socket standing proud like, er, ahem, well something unmentionable is the problem. Plus when you try to unplug it, the power supply comes in half leaving a little bit left in the mains socket. Which will inevitably get left at a gig. Can't wait for that to happen. -limited number of presets. I need a preset for each of 60 songs. I keep a copy of each preset as a master then duplicate them in the order of the night's set list into other presets – so with that I need at least 120 presets, allowing myself one or two to fiddle with. If I recall correctly this has around 126. Best not learn three more songs that need a different sound each. -It's a little difficult to program the thing – the button layout is confusing and unintuitive compared to the Pod XT pro I have just replaced. I can make the trade-off for the sound but this would not work for many I suspect. -Windows or MAC editor – really? Where do I set that up then? Ah yes I just need a $1000 laptop or a chuffing great desktop unit and monitor to hand. I want to spend my money on guitar gear, thanks! Some other vendors have bluetooth and android apps, line 6 for a change is behind the curve. Two final points. 1) If you need something easier to use buy something with more buttons, knobs and pedal switches. 2) If you really like a particular sound, go out and buy the real amp / effect. You just can't beat the real thing. But this gets very, very close, and of course you have several hundred "things" to choose from with no crackles, no mic stand to get kicked, etc etc.
Purchased as a desktop amp to replace a Kemper head and footswitch, primarily for desktop and recording purposes. The unit is very solidly made and takes up next to no space. Although there are limited knobs on the unit itself, the Windows HX Edit software is excellent and makes it super easy to configure presets. Whilst the HX Stomp's effects blocks are very limited compared with the full size Helix, if you typically use a straightforward setup with, say 3-4 pedals, an amp, a cab/IR I don't see why this tiny device couldn't replace an entire rig. One minus point is that the external PSU has poorly designed plastic adapters for different plug types (UK/Euro etc) which disconnect from the PSU far too easily. First time I took mine out the house I unplugged it and didn't realise the adapter had remained in the socket. I had to buy a US to UK adapter. Something to be aware of if you plan on taking this on the road. Also bear in mind that at the time of writing it's not possible to share presets between Stomp and the larger Helix units.
Where do I begin? What a fantastic unit. I've played it both through a tube, stereo 4×12 rig and an FRFR and it sounds incredible through both. The delays, the mods, the tube amps, the pedals the IR options. The most exciting thing about this is the sound! The Helix class software lets me play like me and sound like me. However, another fantastic feature is the edit-ability, and that you get Helix Native for 99 bucks that loads in full Helix profiles with tons of presets. I love loading the profiles into Native and scaling them down for Stomp XL. Another is the portability. I can tote this thing around everywhere and not even feel the pain of dragging around heavy processing gear. I haven't had it long and am just digging in, but i can tell you, it gets more and more exciting what the Helix class software/ HX Stomp can do the further I go. Got it today. First impression. Tried it with my Fender Jazzmaster and Deluxe Reverb for about 2 hours. Unit is small and has allot of features, the looper is one of the best features. Most the FX are about the same as most pedals. Made of plastic, and made in China, you know those guys with the nukes pointed this way. (LOL) It works good but is kind of noisy much worse with the power adapter, supplied. Tried it with a few of my own power addapters, just as much noise or worse. It should be much quieter than it is, I think it will eat allot of batteries. I playJazz guitar don't use much distortion but it has plenty of choices, some the FX would be useful . Easy to tweek FX and store. Not sure it's right for me I may send it back. If it was quieter I think I would keep it.Johnny
sadly i find it a task to set up. the manual provided covers so many languages but is not very instructive on how to actually programme the unit in any detail. i still have not mastered any changes to obtain the effects i want, this seems to be a problem with most of these types of pedal, not just this one. if the manual was better written and more informative it would improve my opinion greatly. having said all this i do think the unit is very well made and presented and if i can get it to work i will raise my star rating. sorrywardl-2014

When I recently bought a new amp, it had no reverb. Being that I have always used reverb on past amps I had to start looking for the right reverb pedal. With so many choices out there to choose from, I opted to find the most simple layout and operation, as well as overall good replication of a true reverb. This pedal fit the bill for me. Doesn't take up a lot of real estate on the pedal board as so many others do. And it only has 3 knobs vs many other pedals that seem to have too many. Operation is so simple and easy to tweak in your favorite sound. I love the PAD section for the ambient space sound. The plate and spring settings can be very convincing for a more true sounding reverb. Overall, I think for the money, you can't go wrong with this pedal. Built like a tank, as all MXR pedals are. Its sad to say but I have owned this pedal 3 multiple times now. One thing that kept me wanting to buy this thing was the looks of the pedal and also the awesome MXR videos on Youtube. Its a very nice looking pedal and its also smaller than most of other reverb pedals out there which is a nice for any pedal board. The reverbs all sounds nice besides the spring reverb which just sounds digital to me. I dont know what it is with this pedal but I find that I get bored of it after a few days. The reverbs sound a bit bland and there is nothing too exciting about it. The most interesting effect would be the pad reverb but I find the effect to become annoying after time. Overall I find that this pedal would suit someone looking a subtle reverb with not much character.ausmusic
Overall: This is a great pedal. I wanted a better and more versetile reverb than the spring tank in my amp and this turned out to be a great solution. There's a range of different flavors of reverb, all of which sound authentic and overall great sound quality. The pedal is really easy to use and dial in a good sound. I also really like the tap feature on the tone knob that allows you to cycle through the different reverbs. Makes it really easy to switch sounds "on the fly." Overall very satisfied. The Mosaic pedal is easy to use, and produces a realistic 12 string effect. It comes with it's own power supply, and I recommend using it as it seems to use quite a lot of energy to produce the effect. When I first connected it in my chain, powered by the wimpy Snark power supply, it didn't really work. The light came on when I pressed the on/off button, but the effect wasn't happening. Then I used the power supply that came with it. Suddenly, out came the shimmering sound of an electric 12 string. In short, it might not sound like a Rickenbacker, but its close enough, and much less expensive. If you want the sound of a 12 string, but don't want to spend the money, this may be the perfect substitute.jonaha650
Overall: Ive been using my Roland Gr-55 (w/ GK-3) to add 12 string shimmer to my sound for years. This little box is amazing! Tracking is impeccable, and the controls are so simple I was up and running within seconds! The metal box is sturdily built, and COMES with a muscular 9v, 1.3amp power supply(?!?!) Switching is silent, and the effect tracks tonal changes between pickups well enough that once dialed in, I dont need to touch the tone knob. If I get insanely picky, I kinda wish there was a separate out for the 12string sound, but that would negatively affect the affordable price and kind of defeat the 1 pedal= 2 instrument simplicity. I have both a 6 string and 12 string Rickenbacker. I don't normally like to take my 12 string gigging because I've got enough other gear to haul around and the 12 string is only used on a few songs. Plus all the associated issues with tuning, string replacement, swapping guitars, etc. The Mosaic does a pretty credible job of making my six string sound like a 12 string. It does not produce a perfect reproduction, but I find it good enough that I'm using it regularly. Considering the technology needed to generate the 12 string sound from a six string instrument, I'm actually very impressed that it does a good a job as it does. And the fact that it is polyphonic is icing on the cake. I've used electronic harmonizers to try and duplicate a 12 string sound, but they always failed in two areas. You could not play chords and the high B and E strings sounded just awful because the harmonizer would try and play notes an octave above on those strings as well (usually rendering this approach useless).. I found that the Mosaic gives a pretty credible 12 string reproduction on the E, A, D, and G strings. Fortunately the upper B and E strings do not get the octave treatment. They remain with the original pitch, but they don't quite have the full tonal resonance of a true 12 string. It isn't bad, just not quite perfect. All in all, I feel its a good product, does a good enough job and I'm happy with the 12 string emulation. I think its a credible option to consider if you need a 12 string sound, but can't justify the cost and issues of owning a true 12 string.bgb92549

I track usually 4 rhythm tracks, two of the exact same then two more of the same but with accents or harmonies etc as my main rhythm and I like it to be tight and sound like one guitar performance, the variations and accents and harmonies blend and widen the sound, also I use hard panning and other panning to make the guitar sound huge. With the guitar sound very close performance wise and tone/distortion quality wise, I find that it just sounds like one massive performance and the listener perceived it as a Randy Rhoads kind of singular performance. I'm the only guitarist and I play complex chords, this also let's be play parts of the chord separately for more even intonation and harmonics definition. It goes towards the big sound, I kind of learned from Alex Lifeson, Rhoads, and Hatfield and Wolf of Accept this approach as they all do the main rhythms and it sounds tight and huge. Mimiq helps me get the 4 tracks with only two performances and it adds natural sounding random variations that do what the multitrack stacking of individual performances does, it doesn't just uniformly cancel out all the interesting variations, which can happen if you just copy the same track and reamp. It does what I wanted to do, with less than half the effort.Mindcage
This replaced the signal splitter on my board with the added benefit of actually making my stereo sound better. I have it right after my tuner and it splits into an HM-2 LHP on the dry side and a Blackened Fuzz on the wet "double" side. Makes my stereo rig sound better. I only use the 1 dub mode, so Dry and 1 Double L/R and I use it pretty tight, just enough to make it sound "different" but not sloppy. Does exactly what I had hoped it would do.
Bought to run a slight delay to a second amp more so than the "double track" thing. But actually this effect seems pretty decent. Did i immediately notice you can get phase issues? Yes of course. Did i get some of that notorious left right jump thing? Yes. But it seems to relate to using the pedal at the limits of what its happy with. For the price this thing is a keeper…because otherwise im having to spend big dosh on either the 30ms or the Deco. Buy this but be prepared to accept some limitations and bug bears. I have used a Motion Sound Pro T3 with my Korg CX-3 organ for many years. Loved it! But finally it was going to cost more to fix than buying a RT-20. The Youtube videos showed that it could do a great job for keyboardists not just guitarists looking for a compact, inexpensive Leslie like effect. This unit has delivered that to me in spades! Did not expect a simulated rotary sound to replicate the rotary sound so well! Have used it in recording and live already! Great construction and love the visual rotary even more. The Motion Sound required me to look back to see if it was on fast. The RT-20, is at my feet and easy to get a visual on whether I am on fast or slow. For what I paid, I am amazed.
I actually bought a different sim pedal, but after comparing it to this one (my guitar player had it) I exchanged the one I bought originally for this one. I think for the price, this sim pedal has versatility that you typically expect of pedals costing twice as much. I love the LED rotor display on stage, you can quickly see your rotor speed. Very tight control of the effect, very sturdy construction. The only thing that kept me from giving it a 5-star rating was having to purchase the AC adapter separately. But other than that, I am VERY happy with this. It makes my software synths sound like a full-blown Hammond/Leslie combo, that I can pack under one arm instead of having to hire help to carry.Mike P.
Inspired by the sweet funky lead guitar tones of the Arc Angels song "Good Time", I started a quest for a good Leslie simulator that took me almost 15 years to complete. I tried (and even bought) several effects over the years, but found all of them extremely lacking in one way or another. When I found the Boss RT20, I was impressed by (1) the overall warmth and tone, (2) the ability to adjust the level(s) of the Horn and Rotor, as well as inject more of the Dry signal if need be, and (3) the low noise threshhold. The various Modes (I, II, III, IV) are useful due to how different rooms affect your tone; a bouncy, bright room worked better with Mode II. A dark, "dead" room worked better with Mode I, etc. (your results may vary). The "Brake" function works great, very close to the actual brake action of a real Leslie (I like how it ramps up and dow, and has a control of how fast that ramping is). I have dialed in reasonable sonic facsimiles of SRV's "Cold Shot", Clapton's "Badge", Harrison's "Let It Be" and Jimmie Vaughan's "Tear It Up" and "Tip On In" tones…as well as my own "Travis County Line" and "I Love You (But Yo Momma's Gotta Go)" A multi-instrumentalist (drummer/guitarist/keyboardist/bassist/singer/producer) within our group has used the pedal with his lower-end Yamaha keyboard, and got great results; after mixing the song, you would think there is an acual Hammond B-3 or C-3 in the band. Some people have criticized the Uni-Vibe setting; I'll admit it isn't perfect, but I've heard much, much worse. (Although, I admit I'm not much of a Uni-Vibe user, so take my non-criticism with a grain of salt). I personally like the spinning light show–it allows you to "see" the speed of the settings. The only criticism: The distortion effect should never, ever, ever be turned on. It turns the entire effect into a steaming pile of elephant droppings. It's not even a "good" bad. There are perhaps better Leslie effects out there (I've played through the Strymon and was suitably impressed), but for the money, this one is definitely a keeper. Is this as good as a real Leslie 122 or 145 or Vibratone? Probably not, but this costs and weighs significantly less–especially considering how I normally only use this effect for two to three songs throughout the performance. Have still to explore all the tonal possibilities of this aptly-named dual distortion pedal but first impressions have been very positive. The unit is smaller and lighter than I expected but the two foot switches are well separated. With six controls for each channel plus shared 'hi' and 'lo' EQ there are plenty of tone-shaping options. The user manual helpfully suggests some settings to get you started. The internal noise gate has so far proved very effective left on the 'natural' setting. You can adjust the threshold to suit your guitar's output, but having used the pedal with guitars loaded with vintage, medium output and hot humbuckers, I've found no need to alter the default factory setting. If you're in the market for a versatile high-gain distortion pedal I would strongly recommend taking a look at this one.Christopher D.
