Best Bass Guitar Effects (2024 Update)

I was recommended this bass preamp almost 20 years ago. I've been through a TON of boutique equipment since then, trying to find 'my sound' and figured..what the heck, let me give this pedal a try. It makes EVERYTHING sound better! If you play on other peoples rigs from time to time, bring this!!! You'll be so much happier you did! You can find 'your sound' on almost any rig with this little guy. I'm a gear snob, I like 'my sound', which is clear, clean, and with a little bit of tube breakup while grinding in on my jazz. My sound is a cross between Flea and Marcus Miller. My boutique equipment gives me this on its own. When I'm forced to play a Behringer single 15" cab with no tweeter and no usable EQ because its the backline, the Sans Amp will be definitely utilized that night! Do yourself a favor and grab one of these pedals! Even if you keep it in you bag as a backup DI. It's like having a preamp and/or a DI at your disposal in case you needed to go straight to the house.DT

Bought this to see about going straight to p.a. And monitor. Initial impressions very good. Even with tone controls flat it seems to improve the sound compared to going straight into the desk. More depth and detail? Not sure if they’re the right words but they’ll have to do! It now sits at the end of the line on my tiny pedal board. Here's why I love this thing. First, I prefer passive basses. Second, when gigging I need fast access to three basic tone signatures — a mid-boosted one for a balanced mix with the band, a bottom-heavy grindy one for heavy lifting, and a scooped one for funk and solos. Program those in, and good to go, with the option to tweak them a bit for conditions without permanently altering the setting. Third, after years of lugging heavy, bulky head units I now feed the Sansamp into a 1000W ultralite power amp and have all the headroom I need, without the pain. Fourth, whenever I meet a new sound man at gigs the first thing I hear is "Sweet, a Sansamp DI." Fifth, hand-built like a tank in NYC. I'm sure I can list more, but you get the idea. I was looking for a fuzz that would not get buried in the mix and retain some low-end. I used one of of the great coupons offered by Musiciansfriend and got a great deal on it. The Bass Fuzz Deluxe is exactly what I was looking for. Whether I use it with my flatwound strung vintage P-Bass or my Yamaha TRB1005 it sounds fuzzy, heavy yet not messy or overloaded with low-mids. This effect is more versatile than you may think due to the fuzz/clean blend. Good thing it is a true bypass as it would have been a deal-breaker for me. I never buy an effect without a true bypass as it will suck up your tone even when it is off. I mostly play Alt Rock, Funk and Reggae and find some applications for this effect in all those styles. I actually like its sound better than the demos I saw on Youtube. In addition the pedal is small and looks cool. It's a keeper!Frenchy-Lefty

Great pedal, exceptional value for money! Sounds great, can get some real bass tones through it without sacrificing too much and with little to no feedback when cranked up. Only issue is that I’d say better quality switches could be used, feel a little cheap and heavy when switching but other than that, ace! Wasn't expecting more than a good D. I. Box. After using it at my band rehearsal it's now become essential. It has made my ashdown drive pedal obsolete, cleaned up the bottom end in my tone and the whole band. I use a Spector Legend 6 Bass. I'm In a band with two bassists, drums and vocals. We both Bi-amp. A bass amp and a guitar amp. Getting these to all work together can be a real headache… But this has improved things so much, that the other bassist has one now. Tone very comparable to an ampeg type- Growly, very tight and controllable bottom end, doesn't "fart out" on Max. Top end can be moved between airy and crunchy. Build quality It is plastic, but I have no worries. I'm sure if I stomped on the 1/4" Jack, it would damage, but I keep mine on the pedal board anyway. Value Beyond comparison. I can't think of a better spent 20. The sansamp it's cloning is at least 8 times more expensive. And although it's better in some areas, (metal casing etc), sound-wise there's little to choose between them. At this price, in the unlikely event it broke, I'd just buy another. I have recorded using this, and it has very little noise, But massive tone. If it sounds good in an amplifier, it really comes into its own recorded. Obviously with Behringer you are likely trying to save some cash instead of getting something "name brand." When I would record DI bass guitar, I used to run it through a distortion or fuzz pedal to get a more natural sounding gain. The V-Tone pedal is very good in that regard. Turn the presence, drive, and blend knobs all the way up and adjust the EQ to your liking and you get a mean crunch while keeping the clack of loose strings. That is about the limit of this pedal's potential, at least for me. Any adjustment to those knobs to turn down the distortion results in a sound nearly identical with just a clean DI with no pedal or preamp at all. It's as if turning them up from 1 to 8 has no effect until you get them to 9 and 10. Another flaw I've found is the high gain settings bring along a high pitched whistle that occurs randomly during playing, though it seems to happen with a lot of string rattle from long, held notes. It doesn't stand out when it's mixed with drums and a wall of guitars, though. I've only used it as a DI for recording, never as a preamp or DI for a PA or anything like that, it's possible it could be really good for those. I am happy with it to record bass for my doom, black metal, and mathcore kind of music, but wouldn't go to it for anything else.Jacob

I recently purchased the guitar version (GDI21) and was quick to get this bass version soon after. I own a rack mount Tech21 Sansamp RBI unit which has been excellent for me thru the years live. Also, their V1 VT Bass pedal has been a mainstay for me in a live setting. This is a very good clone of the BDDI with potential issues if used in a live setting. These are: Cheezy and fragile On/Off foot switch, and Illegible knobs. I have no idea where the knobs are set at any given time. Aside from that, I like this as a desk top companion to my other tone shapers such as the MXR M80 and M81 Bass Preamps. For little money, you can't lose in purchasing this for a home studio bass pre.Reed in CA

I get a variety of good, useable tones out of this one box. In fact, this has replaced the distortion patches I was using on my trusty DOD Bass 30 entirely. To say that I am happy with any stock stompbox is a big deal, because I have only a few left in my collection that I haven't modified the circuitry in to better suit me. This is one of the few originals, and that says volumes. I step on mine regularly, and haven't had any issues with it. I'm not a bass player, but I play one on my records. I've been playing lead guitar for 20 years, and I know good sounds. I say this to inform you that my credentials are in good order. You can get any sort of growl you want, thick or thin- and as much or little of the clean as you need to retain the punch at the same time. The only thing I would change is the color of the box… Since that has absolutely nothing to do with the sound it makes, I'm fine with it. Seriously, I was skeptical too when I saw the price. Don't let it, and the silly color fool you- Let your ears be the judge. Being a man with ears, fingers, and experience beyond my years, I highly recommend it to everyone.Shredprodigy

I got this a while back to add a some gain to play a bit of metal with a bit of overdrive on top as well as fattening the sound of the bass. Unfortunately this will never give you a "smooth" gain sound like having a guitar amp's gain around 2. Having gain down all the way shuts off all sound to the amp, and having it around 2/10 puts on a harsh brittle overdrive no matter the EQ. Sounds a little better with flatwound strings. This pedal goes all out or nothing. If a "Hysteria" sound is what you're going for, this will do it but not a true amp low/med-gain sound.Fear

I have an Xotic AC Booster and it is one of my fav pedals. At the start of my chain – after the buffer – I have a Compressor, then an old DOD Preamp 250, followed by my AC. I like the sound, but had this setup for a while and was just looking to shake things up. I thought the RC ver 2 would be a great replacement for the DOD as what could be better than 2 xotics in series? Well, not this! The Comp (Wampler Ego; another pedal I like alot) did not play well with the RC. The sound was muddy and lost all definition. The RC alone was OK, but not great. Found the effect of Gain 1 to be pretty darn subtle and really not much better than my old DOD gain pedal. Had to crank RC Gain 1 to full CW to hear much – a very different pedal from the AC which is super responsive. I also found the adjustment for the RC Gain 2 pot to be very awkward for a quick adjustment onstage as is occasionally necessary between songs. So, I was pretty bummed out as I love the AC and I use an Xotic EP booster for regular lead boosts. Just did not work out for me. Hard to decide if I would recommend the RC. Personally, I am very picky about effects, usually use only 2 at most at one time (e.g. Comp + AC; EQ + Delay, etc.) . So I think i would say that I do not recommend…but you may like it.BCY123

I'm surprised at how much I use this pedal. I bought it to boost the signal of passive basses and it does that and a lot more. The EQ points are right where you need them. And because you can preset those as well as the volume, when you switch to a passive bass in the middle of a live performance there is no time wasted fiddling with knobs trying to match the sound of your active bass. Also it's useful as a clean boost on active basses for those times when your hands are busy and you can't adjust your amp in the middle of a song. Just pre-set the pedal to a little boost and any time you need it, you've got it with a quick stomp of the foot. The third use I find for this pedal is with effects. You can use it to put a little boost before any overdrive/distortion pedal it will increase the gain. I love this because I like the sound of the Morning Glory pedal, but it doesn't get quite dirty enough. Most pedals that get as dirty as I want don't sound the way the Morning Glory does so this is perfect for me. And the other way it's useful is to add bottom end to distortion pedals (which are famous for not supporting the low end very well). Preset a little bass boost and when you stomp the overdrive/distortion pedal also click on the Xotic RC.PDGood

In my opinion, as a bass player since 1967, and a luthier/tube amp tech since 1973 Simon Keats at Origin Effects designs the best sounding pedals (reproductions of vintage amps & compressors) and are the highest quality pedals on the planet. I bought both Bassrig versions which duplicate their respective amps ( the '64, a Fender blackface Showman and the Super Vintage, an Ampeg SVT) which reproduce very accurately these amps from the input to the output jack, and both even have a cab sim on the XLR output. I couldn't be happier with them. Yes, they're pretty expensive, but you always get what you pay for with Origin Effects.johnk

Overall: Over the years I have owned at least a dozen bass overdrive and distortion pedals and this one is the best hands down. It sounds like an Ampeg SVT cranked with lots of warm rich tube saturation without sounding muddy or losing your low end. I was surprised at how well this pedal emulates a high gain tube amp. just like with the real deal if you dial back the volume on your bass and the amount of overdrive dials back with it. The controls are simple and easy to use and give tons of control of your sound. The volume control works to boost or cut your volume without effecting the effect leval. The blend control let's you dial in some of your clean tone to help keep your low end full. I leave the gain cranked with just a little of my clean tone mixed in and it sounds amazing. As an added plus this pedal is dead silent even when switched on. In the past I always needed to use a noise gate for my distortion pedals but this pedal is so quiet I don't need one, which helps free up space on my pedal board.Timothy

Overall: I've had this pedal for a couple of years. I originally bought it for practice but I've been gradually replacing my pedalboard with it mostly because of three reasons:1. The compressor and limiter simulations are top notch. 2. The reverbs and delays are as good as any I've used before. 3. The Ampeg SVT simulation is something that I keep going to.As a bass player I only need very few effects and a good compressor. The rest of my sound comes mostly from the type of bass I use and my fingers.This pedal is perfect for all your effect needs. I'm surprised that more players don't use this pedal. Pretty much the best headphone amp for bass. The world of multi effects is moving so fast right now that if you just want a cheap multi effects unit, you’re better off paying the tiny amount extra for a valeton gp100 or similar. But for just practicing with headphones this is amazing, it’s small, light and portable. It runs off AA batteries, 9v or any USB charger/battery pack and outs to headphones or amp. Plug in headphones, a track from your laptop or whatever and jam. Forget all the terrible headphone amps like the amplugs or the overpriced ones like the fender micro and just use one of these instead. For practicing wherever whenever with a solid bunch of effects 5*. Overall review 4* just because purely as a multi effects pedal it is a bit outdated and underfeatured, but the portability means it still has a great place for practicing.jon m.

I enjoy B1X4 alot. I bought it to have the capabilities to access different sounds on my bass rig. But most importantly is the expression pedal. I use a wah pedal alot in my playing. It has a good stock clean wah sound and a good distortion wah sound. I dig that so much for the value. The best part of this unit is the ease of adjusting the levels and settings of each patch. This board gets 4 stars from me. It's great for studio work and practice but for stage work it's plastic, small and delicate body could get damaged easily. I'm a big guy with large feet and sometimes I would hit both pedals which brings up the tuner. I have since added a bass crybaby wah pedal, a pre-amp,fuzz,octave, compression pedal unit and a chorus pedal to my arsenal and still use the B1X4 together on my pedal board all together. It serves as a tuner and I use a few patches on it. It serves me so very well. The Zoom B1X Four is a great board with many, many uses and advantages for any bass player at all levels.1978circa3-9

Overall: This is a super cool effects unit for the price point. You can spend $100.00 or more on JUST a volume pedal or a looper or a rhythm unit separately. To have all of these plus the great sounds in this package is the true definition of bang for the buck. For a quarter the price of most reverb pedals this is incredible value. It has a comprehensive range of reverb types with full adjustment for each. Each sounds great and so far I have fpund nothing I disliked. The pedal is quiet, no unwanted hum or clicks and the bypass apears to be full bypass. Some may say that the plastic case is a put off but all the plastic cased pedals i have ever had have stood up well to normal use. I think that this would be the same.Colin H.

Delivers six different ways to color tone in a single box, for a rock-bottom price. You can use one at at time, which is really no drawback– just buy another one of these if you want to chain them. Experienced pedal users may have effects that are superior. But I'm a low-rent guy in a high-stress world, with no prior experience in pedals or tone shaping, and for me this is a gem. Instant therapy. A lot of fun, finding sounds that I've heard on songs and always wondered how people made them. I don't find it to be very noisy at the volumes employed in my apartment (duh), and a noise gate in my chain makes it virtually silent. The build quality is not an issue for me, at least so far. I won't be abusing it, and for the price, if I somehow manage to break the case… it's not a tragedy. It's a cool box for people like me who want inexpensive access to the world of effects. This is a very good unit for it's price. I purchased it for my "little" amp when I go to friends place's to jam. My "big" amp has the same effects in it & are better. However, it does do the job I purchased it for. It is well made in China under German supervision. The Germans don't do rubbish products & that's what made me check it out. I'm not complaining about it at all, this is one of those "horses for courses" items. I have another pedal that does what this one does & more but it cost three times what this did. I'd recommend this to anyone that wants those effects but doesn't want to pay close to $200. My last remark is "you can't beat it for the price"Roger R.

As a bass player in a covers band, different tones and effects at needed for different artists. Really great fun researching a players sound and putting the effects into a patch. I found it easiest to hook up to a laptop using the free software, lining up all the effects, labelling it and adjusting some parameters. Then playing and rehearsing to adjust the sounds by ear. I got some great chorus sound for Guns n Roses, a decent Motrhead sound, and even some tricky Muse effects. Not to mention various mildly overdriven sounds and a really nice Classic Fender Precision tone. I even got a reasonable (not accurate) cello sound (intro to I Write Sins not Tragedies- Panic at the disco)sirbucketheadthethird

I purchased the Zoom B3n from MusiciansFriend when they showed up back in stock recently. I hoping that the 2.0 firmware upgrade from 2 months ago would be applied to current shipments of the product, but I received the B3n with 1.0 firmware. It was easy to install the device driver (although time patience is key), and the firmware upgrade went smoothly. The unit's basic sound performance seemed like an improvement from the base firmware, and more effects were included with the new firmware. I was also pleasantly surprised that the patch manager software was a breeze to download and use (Win7). In order to have everything available from Zoom to date, you have to use the patch manager to install the patches that have been made available over the past year or so. Patches are .zptc files, so custom patches can be shared and dragged and dropped into the software, and then onto your B3n. You can also use the patch manager software to backup or restore your complete unit, and the editing is a breeze. Swapping patch locations to organize for convenience can also be done more sanely in the software. I now have over 100 effects from Zoom, and 96 patches, all from Zoom, compared to the almost 70 effects and 75 patches initially received. I don't see myself needing to custom design that many patches, so having 150 available patch slots with up to 7 effects chained is great for me. I think Zoom did a great job considering the price point, but there is a learning curve, and you will spend several hours getting it together, so caveat emptor for sure! The snags are (1) the USB connector was a Micro-B, so luckily my son had a cable from his Samsung phone. Most equipment I have uses USB Mini-B. (2) The output impedance is 10K, so an output buffer may be necessary when inputting into lower impedances to avoid 'sound' changes from the B3n. (3) The 6 available pedal effects won't be accessible on the B3n unless you plug in and configure the Zoom Exp pedal. (4) HW/SW Learning Curve!StringBender

Having purchased this unit among other pedals to replace a Zoom B2.1u Multi FX unit, I found myself wondering whether there really was anything to gain from the change. I was very quickly convinced that it was worth every cent, as the MXR compressor gives you all the versatility you could want in a compressor. The LED bar graph shows you exactly how much compression is being applied at a given moment, and serves as a fantastic way to adjust your settings so that the signal is being compressed exactly where and when you want it to be. Your eyes will tell you what your ears may not! Unlike many of my other pedals, the MXR Bass Compressor stays in the state you leave it in. Other effects need to be toggled on or off to suit my 'default' sound every time the pedal board is plugged in, but thanks to the 3PDT toggle switch, this unit stays in the state you left it in. If it was on when you unplugged, it'll be on when you plug in again, and vice versa! The other benefit of this type of switch is that you get true bypass. Overall, the MXR Bass compressor is very compact, built tough, versatile, adjustable, doesn't color your tone, and leaves you believing it couldn't possibly be improved, as it's already PERFECT! I would absolutely buy another one if this was stolen and would not even need to consider the competition!leftybenno

it's hard to tell what is really happening here unless you really pay attention very closely to the sound of what's NOT happening, meaning, you are trying to focus the sound, tone, ambience, etc. yet at the same time, you want it to do what it's meant for – very hard to discern when there's no manual to go by. The manual for this unit is absolutely TERRIBLE – sure it's in every language in the world, but NO real directions for setup or how to make the sound improved. No theory of operation, nothing. Worst manual I ever opened. For anything ever bought in my lifetime. And no link to direct you to better, more detailed instructions on how to use. Very disappointed in that regard. Other than that, it does seem to make my overall sound less sloppy ( less speaker "wow" & flutter is the goal, when playing bass, with one of these compressors) so it seems to be eliminating what you DON'T want to hear, but it takes some time to get this pedal oriented correctly, with the controls. And you really have to pay attention to what you're NOT hearing, as you tweak it – that's the only way you'll know if you are improving on the sound.bass player # 69

This is the 3rd and final compressor I tried. I like the visual readout which is quite helpful. This pedal has a lot of different sounds it can help create. I play 4 to 5 times a week in two different bands. The one band is a hard rock/funk band and the other is a country band. Needless to say my tone is different in each situation. This pedal helps me get to where I need to and quickly. Once you figure out the pedal, it is really easy to use. I bought this pedal as just simply a way to help some popping and such that goes on within my amp when I decide that it's more important to play rough and loud (having too much fun and getting carried away) than to play sonically correct for a few select songs. First I tested it out and seemed to work as per the reason I got it but then when I went to a jam session. I noticed that this pedal was doing soooo much more than just helping level out all the noises when they peaked or just shot up abruptly. This pedal as I found out is not just for those who like to play hard and/or slap.. This pedal is almost as important to me now as any EQ. Each note when the pedal is off sometimes it's molded together and sounds muddy when playing several notes at once or chords. When you want more than one note to ring at a time this will make ALL the difference in the world. Each note comes out crystal clear. BUY THIS PEDAL! Pro's: Keeps volumes at a safe and constant levels Notes are better separated and almost seem to ring out better Con's: none unless you're not a fan of the color??? The LMB-3 gave me what I was missing by providing good compression ratio and threshold to create a full and even sound. The unit is very versatile and can be adjusted to fit most playing styles (i.e. finger picking, slap, etc.). I did have to play around with the enhance to reduce line noise (hiss) to an acceptable level. It would probably effect a recording, but for live performances, is less of a factor. The price is very reasonable given the BOSS quality. I would recommend buying an AC adapter to go along with this pedal as well.DanO

Decent bass feeder. You gotta spend time to find settings you like, especially if you are combining this pedal with other effects. If you overdo it, it may sound too beefy and plain, so balance is key. But once you find sweet spot, you are rewarded with fixed and rounded bass sound. From sound perspective: – LEVEL gives great boost on it's own and works well with tuned RATIO and THSHD – ENHANCE probably is not needed more than 10 o'clock if you are not slap or funk bassistdmitrijsilov2009

This box is terrific. My basses sound great through it and there is a wide range of tones available. The scrambler circuit is a real hayride. Im running an instrument, a mic and an iPod through it and it all works great. My cheap electric guitar even sounds worth keeping now. My issue is power. The battery is buried behind the back plate. You have to open the box to get to it. The box does not come with a power supply. Musicians Friend benignly neglects to tell you this. You should talk to MF for power supply suggestions.tomgray56

Overall: I recently picked up an inexpensive Bugera rig for live gigs, which was great "oomf" for the price, but it didn't quite have the tone or character I wanted. Very flat sound, but affordable! Enter the SCR-DI! I wanted something with some crunch built in, that also had DI out. But the headphone out and AUX in on this definitely peaked my interest, as its always nice to have after-hour practice options. I plugged it into my head, and as soon as I switched it on I was in tone heaven. Even with the EQ settings all set flat, this box gave my bass tone that color and chunk I was looking for. Then of course with the Ultra Hi/Lo settings there's even more flexibility on how round, snappy, or smooth you want. The scrambler sounds great. I prefer the drive and blend both set to 12-o'clock, just to give some crunch on the top end, that gets more dirty the harder you play. Cranked all the way is almost fuzz territory. The paint job makes it look plastic but it's a rugged all metal chassis so I'm sure this'll be part of my rig for a while. Overall I'm super pleased with this. Highly recommended if you're in need of a DI box or just looking for an all-in-one solution to make your rig sound more Ampeg-ish.Alexander

Sound: The pedal has a buffered sound. When not using the preamp, you'll need to use another pedal to boost volume levels. That said, I love the tone stack. The SVT sound really comes through. I really like the way my bass sounds through it. Can't really say if the tone stack "colors" the bass tone. For my style and my current bass set up in praise and worship (Yamaha TRBX305 with Aguilar Super Doubles and a Seymour Duncan STC-3P), I begin with my EQ set to noon. If I'm using a lot of finger style that day, I'll boost the mids to about 1 or 2 o clock, and sometimes the bass to about 1 o clock. For slap and funk tones, I like to set the bass and treble to 1 o clock. and mids at noon. Features: I love that I can use it as a practice amp. We went through some struggles recently and had to get rid of a fender halfstack and found myself with nothing to practice with. This pedal made practice possible. I'm not really a fan of the overdrive circuit, and currently have a love/hate relationship with it. The ultra-hi and lo settings are interesting. I don't use the ultra hi boost, but the ultra low I'll use with overdrive to help make up for any bottom end I lose. Sometimes I'll use it too if I need thick bass for something slow but epic. My only wish is that I could have slightly better EQ controls, specifically with the mids, maybe a parametric sweep, or even a switch with preset frequencies. Ease of Use: Very easy to use. Beware, if you put a battery into it, it will buffer your signal even if it's off. I really like that I can unscrew the back pack without the use of tools of any kinds. The rubber pads underneath are designed to also function as thumb screws, very easy to take off and replace, which makes replacing batteries on the fly a very simple task. Quality: The pedal feels heavy and tough, but I cannot yet speak on it's reliability although it hasn't failed yet. Value: It's expensive but worth it. The Wow Factor: No real wow factor. It is a nice solid pedal but nothing crazy or particularly special about it. Overall: I love this pedal. My purpose for purchasing this pedal was to improve my bass tone. I figured the best way was to look for something I could use to split my signal between the stage amp and the house system at my church. I'm not a fan of the stage rig we use, so this pedal allows me to bypass the rig. The best part was the added unexpected bonus of total ground noise elimination! For some reason, utilizing the XLR output from the amp head to the house resulted in ungodly amounts of noise. I now get a cleaner signal to the house and can better control my volume (the stage rig is very old and has sensitive volume controls).Christian

This is a great multi effects pedal/DI. Its all I need. Dont let its small size fool you. Its got some weight to it, so I assume its probably well built. All metal. Each effects sections knobs light up a different color. Tuner is accurate. I didnt give a full 5 stars because I wouldve liked a rate knob in the chorus section & maybe some more options in the compressor section. Overall, I recommend this pedal. Pleasantly surprised with the build & sound quality. I doubt Ill use the Dirty Q (envelope filter) much but its there if I need it. Spend a little time with each section of this pedal & Im sure you will find at least one setting youll like!fuelman1975
