I was adding a 2nd tuner to my gear. This is a good tuner, but it defaults back to 440 Hz with every power down. I tune to 415, half step down and leave it there. My D'Addario tuner maintains whatever Hz adjustment was made prior to power down. I made the bad assumption that others of a quality brand would support this too. I bought a Snark tuner YEARS ago. I thought this one must be better (it's been years). Frankly it isn't (it's been years). It's OK. I don't mind it. I prefer my old one. That said, I bought two of these and will use use them all the time. When you're told that a product has been improved and the supposed improvements are are not only not perceptible but the product seems to be inferior then … what? YAY gold button! This tuner appears to be a decent quality item. The most important thin, of course is it works! Follow the colour indicator to the correct colour and your guitar is in tune. A neat touch is because of the ball joints, the tuner can be mounted on the back side of the headstock, out of view of an audience but still fully visible to the user. The other point is. A colleague of mine turned me on to these, and in particular to this strange gauge of 9.5 – 44. I had struggled in the past with standard 9s on a guitar with high output pickups and a warble-happy whammy bar. I find these strings to handle really nicely, a perfect amount of slick and grip (finger contact) and they positively scream in my current configuration. I've put them on a guitar that I don't play live often, and I find that the strings don't deteriorate over time with the guitar being left in the case. This is very subjective and a question of personal chemistry. I mean, I've seen players go through a pack of the best "long-lasting" string on the market in one night, so it'll always come down to which material lends itself to your handling. Despite the price tag, I am not sorry that I've purchased those, and I just picked up a few more packs to tide me over the months of session work.Boyan P.
I have been using these strings for about a year now, when I had to drop down to 8 gauge strings due to carpal tunnel in my left hand. I wanted to go with a higher quality string since I would be using such a light gauge. The NYXL series does not disappoint. They are extremely flexible, stay in tune, last a really long time and they sound incredible. I had concerns that I would be sacrificing tone, but this has not been the case. This is the first time I tried these D'Addario NYXL strings. I got the nickel wound electric strings, regular light. I think these strings are one of the best I've used. I started playing guitar when I was very young so I've been playing for a lot of years. These nickel wound electric guitar strings are easy to play. The strings are nice on the fingers. Some strings make my finger tips get tuff, but tuff to the point that it affects the preasure I use on the strings. These nickel wound strings don't do that. I have had them on for some time now and none of them broke. I like the tone of the strings. It made tuning the guitar very easy after I strung it. There is something to say about having strings that are easy to string, tune, and have a great tone. If you are playing out some where and a string breaks you need to work kind of fast to get up and playing again. These strings do the trick.penny

I figured I needed to have a heavier string gauge for durability and better tone. Searched around and came across these strings in the heavy gauge, and I could not be happier with them. These strings have great sustain, are durable, do not corrode as quickly as other brands I have used in my professional career playing music, and, despite their heaviness, are easy to play in standard tuning. Along with playing well with a pick and fingers, these strings also sound terrific when playing slide. You can get the same great tones out of these strings that Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have with their lighter gauges, as well as channeling the fat tones that you hear from Duane Allman from the Fillmore East show. Great Garcia tones can come from these strings as well. Basically what I am saying is that you can still get those classic guitar sounds on these heavy strings without feeling like your losing tone or playing opportunities utilized by the players that inspire you who may use lighter string gauges. These strings also (as far as I know) have a round core instead of a hex core. I think that might be a reason why these strings have so much sustain, especially when you have some distortion or overdrive keeping them warm while playing lead. If you are on the fence about getting these, I recommend you give them a try just see how they work for you. They are no that expensive and its worth it to figure out what works for you as a player. This is a VERY solid 7 string. I've tried quite a few brands searching for the perfect intermediate 7 string, both active and passive electronics. So far, the best ones, by far, have been LTD and Schecter, with this one taking the cake (even over an $850 Ltd ec-407). First off, the guitar is beautiful, and the neck feels great. I usually don't like the super-strat body style, but this one has the top curves in all the right places. There is a bit of fret buzz when strummed hard on the low B, but that's to be expected and it's much more manageable than some of the others I tried. If it's a problem, I'd recommend a thicker gauge string set, I like ghs boomers in a heavy gauge (they eliminated fret buzz on a previously owned, less expensive LTD 7 string I owned) The pickups sound incredible, honestly. There are models of this same guitar with Duncan Designed pickups, and that model is slightly more expensive, but I assure you that you're not missing out if you get this one with Schecter Diamond active pickups instead. In fact… I think these sounded better in some applications! Fantastic gain, clarity, and definition, and perfect for metal, they will make your riffs sound brutal… they sound good clean too though! Overall the best bang for your buck 7 string I've tried yet. I've personally owned 5 different ones, but this and the now-discontinued Jackson slathx-m 3-7, which come stock with Seymour Duncan Sentient and Nazgul passive pickups, take the cake for the best I've played.Brian F
I was honestly quite skeptical about the idea of an eight string. A few of my buddies and I decided that, based on the type of music that we wanted to play, an eight string was the right answer. Not wanting to spend a ton on an eight string if I didn't like it, I found this model at a decent price. Needless to say, I was blown away by this guitar. Everything about it is above what I would expect for a guitar of this price point. The neck is very fast with a smooth finish, the action was set up just right, the intonation is spot on, and the correct gauge strings for the tuning we are in were already installed. I was also worried about the neck being much thicker than I would have liked, but Schecter did a phenomenal job with his neck. Another concern that I had was the electronics. In my experience, a guitar that has stock branded pickups has never really been that great. These pickups more than do the job. Eventually I can see switching them out for Fishman Fluence, but they will certainly do for now.Derek
This guitar hits a real sweet spot! If you're looking to get into a seven string on a budget, but want to guarantee you're getting a trustworthy guitar, this is the one! The quality is unbelievably good for the price. For an entry level purchase, you're getting some of the best components that Schecter has to offer; borrowing its design and some features from the iconic Hellraiser series. Side-by-side, the Omen is just as nice – almost indistinguishable in build quality and overall appearance. The guitar also came perfectly set up and ready to play from Sweetwater. Nice low action, fast neck, responsive and strong sounding pickups. I bought this guitar because I was a little hesitant to try some of the cheaper options like Harley-Benton and cheap Jacksons. I do not regret this decision one bit! The Schecter is much classier looking, has a great feel to it, and will likely last a very long time with minimal maintenance. My only real complaint with the guitar is that Schecter switched to a more swirly-patterned quilted maple finish on their newer models and I was hoping for more of the woodgrain / tiger stripe appearance that the older ones seemed to have. It's not a dealbreaker though, the finish still looks great in person! Overall I am extremely pleased. Playing 7-string is so much fun and this was the best way to get involved without risking a huge investment.

(Guitar there were placed on is a Tom Murphy Painted and Aged Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul Standard w/ Brazilian Fretboard) Back in the day, Ernie Ball strings weren't packaged well; they weren't even sealed. If you haven't tried them since their packaging was reinvented, they're definitely worth a look now. Tried D'Addario pure nickel strings, found the wound three to be too low output. I swear the core wire looked like it belonged in acoustic strings. Maybe I got a factory defect, who knows. Gibson strings sound great initially but the 'G' starts to sound dead after a week and the wound strings sound dead and filthy in three weeks. These on the other hand sound marvelous. They sound great out of the package, stay balanced, and sound good for longer than I thought possible.MidnightRiderInTX
I have recently come back to playing the guitar, Sax is my primary instrument but I have had my Gibson RD Standard since 1978. I have since increased my heard of guitars to 10 electric guitars and 3 bass guitars. I have come to favor the Ernie Ball lights and super lights on almost all my guitars. I play the 9's on all of my Stratocaster copies and the super lights on the 3/4 size guitars. I have been using the Power Slinkys (11s) for a few years now. I had switched from another brand because the Slinkys made my Strat sound more Straty. After watching a few videos on YouTube about string gauge, I thought I would buy the Regular Slinkys (10s) and see what difference that would make. When I got online to buy I saw that Guitar Center had a sale on 12 packs and since there is a pandemic, I thought it prudent to hoard strings. My logic was that while I may run out of TP, I would never run out of strings for my guitars. Long story short, you cannot go wrong with the tone of 10s. I do like them better than the 11s. They are much clearer in the low end and you get more definition. I have to do less EQing when recording and they just seem to pop better in a mix. The only downside is that they are taking me time to get used to, I play very heavy handed and these are much easier to bend. But I can already see that I have less hand fatigue.Richard

I have been using the 81-7 for a few years now(although mine is an earlier issue with the extended housing). I have it installed in a Schecter Damien 7 which I use as my primary guitar for practice and home recording. I find that this pickup is great for this type of application as it cuts down a great deal on the amount of noise you get with computers and TV's in the room. At home I play and record using a Line6 Pod X3 and the EMG's are great for low volume playing. I have also used that guitar live but the pickups give me A LOT of feedback at high gain/volume settings. Right now I have the 81-7 in the neck position with a 707 in the bridge. Since the 81 has a greater mid range voicing it tends to sound very well balanced and clear at the neck while the 707 provides slightly sweeter tones at the bridge. The 81-7 can sound very flat or even harsh at the bridge depending on what kind of amp you are using.No matter what position, I do recommend doing the 18 volt mod if you use EMG's(google it). The increase in power is really noticable and it essentially gives the pickups the dynamics of passive pups while maintaining their active gain character. The EMG 60A is of course a 60 with the ceramic magnet swapped for Alnico. What's the difference? Well it has a Kim Jong-un and smoother sound, less of the hard 'clang' to the treble of the 60(c) for sweeter cleans and a more open, fluid delivery with the gain turned up. The age old EMG 18v mod works magic bringing better dynamic response, clarity with extended frequency response and depth. 50k pots add a touch more bite.pauln4813
The reason for replacing my 8 string bridge pickup was simple – I needed much more clarity on the low end, and way more high mids in the signal. The 808x delivered. The pickup is dynamic, packs a solid punch, cuts through the mix, sounds amazing. The noise performance is great, as expected from EMGs, the installation is easy as pie with the solderless system using dupont cables (btw. The system is compatible with ANY dupont cable, not proprietary). The pickup reacts beautifully to height regulation, while maintaining solid signal-to-noise ration, and output. Not enough lows? Bring it closer to the strings. Want more mid range? Lower the pickup a bit. In fact, you can lower it very far without losing too much power. So far I mostly used passive pickups, but this one got me convinced, that passives are not always the answer to your tone needs.

These are the best strings I've ever used. GORE has been trying to discontinue and keeps pushing the Nanoweb version: but the difference is huge! No match at all! The Elixir Polyweb maintain their tone, brightness and tension over 10 times what a Nanoweb does and probably twice that number over un-coated strings. I play every day and I've had guitars with over 6-7-8 months using the same set of strings with no issues. The're that good! BTW, my main guitars are Gibson Les Paul (TonePros Nashville and Tune-O-Matic Locking Bridge, Tusq Nut) and PRS Custom 24 (Tremolo version with Bronze Saddles and a Tusq Nut). These strings feel so good… no such thing as a strange feel because they're coated. You actually feel like playing with a very familiar and comfy feel. These Elixir Polyweb keep outperforming their competitors easily: D'Addario EXP, DR Extra, Fender DuraTone, Dean Markley Blue Steel, Earnie Ball Coated Slinky or the latest Earnie Ball Cobalt. Again: by far! In over 30 years playing and recording, I've never encountered a product of such quality in what comes to strings… and trust me: I've tried them all! This was a great price on my favorite strings. Shipping was very fast too. Unfortunately, "new" does not mean the same as"fresh" and I have now learned the difference. These do seem to be genuine Elixers, but a few problems which led to broken strings may indicate that these were either sitting on a shelf for a very long time or else exposed to moisture. Normally, brand new strings will be very springy when you first take them out of the sleeve. They generally will uncoil into a straight line, but every single one of these maintained a strong curl or twist in it. But that alone was not a problem for me. The strings installed normally and tuned well, but the tonal quality seemed a little sub-par compared to what I was used too. Still, it's possible I was just imagining that. The strings were fine for a month. Held there notes as well as any, and the tone was at least decent, though I still felt it was missing something. But after one month I had the B string break. I usually keep Elixer strings for 6 months before they finally lose their great tone and I replace them, and because I wind plenty of extra string around the posts, I haven't had a string break on me in over 8 years. Breaking one now pretty much confirmed my earlier suspicions. I went ahead and replaced all 6 strings with the next set, but 2 weeks later and the high E string broke on me. For now I'm borrowing the high E from the final set, but the first chance I get I will be replacing every string with a new, fresh set from a local music store. I don't think I'll buy strings online again because of this apparent problem of freshness.jaredlang85
Long lasting, great sound. I went to my girlfriends sisters home for Xmas and a few guys got a some guitars out and we played some rock, country and bluegrass on Elixers strung on acoustic instruments. They claimed the strings were three years old. They sounded quite good for their age. After seeing a John Paul Jones interview where he said Elixers were all he used. I already used them but his opinion completely sold me. I even bought an Elixer tee shirt. I use them on all my guitars and mandolins. I won't settle for anything else. Bridge pickup: fat and loud. This produces a very noisy rock/metal sound that fits perfectly for bands such as Rage Against The Machine and Black Sabbath. No hiss and very useable. Middle pickup: Clear. Essentially the acoustic sounding pickup. Very very effective for chordal work. Sounds great for acoustic work such as certain Babyshambles, Libertines, Oasis and the like. Does get a hiss occasionally, but not too huge. Probably isn't aided by my old amp. Neck pickup: bright. Extremely sweet sounding pickup for solo work beyond the 12th fret. It does sound a little muddy playing 1-5th frets on occasion, but the tone and sound at the other end of the neck is beautiful. Sounds fantastic playing Hendrix, Kravitz and solo's from Strokes etc. Have also used it to good effect on some Clapton tracks. There is the option to mix pickups (such as half neck humbucker, half single pickup) but I generally find these too weak and in-distinctive to be used effectively.
the part where subjectivity kicks in (have you noticed how "objective" this review was from the get-go? ). The styles of music I play, as I mentioned earlier, are mostly the Metal subgenres, with an occasional pull of a bluesish pentatonic. To me, this guitar fills every need I might have concerning any and all "heavy" music. It simply molds itself to any need I might have, and fills it in style. Sure, I DO have that Peavey Raptor as well, using it as a practice guitar, but the GRG will remain foremost. If I had had a question to ask before I'd bought it, then that question would irreversibly be: "Does it come as a "2 for 1" special?"… and if it were – forbidden be the thought – lost; or worse – stolen, then I'd definitely get another one. Simply put, this is my guitar. What I love most about it is it's demeanor. I compared it to the Raptor: whilst the latter is an extremely comfortable guitar, quite literally screaming "play me!" (I don't speak "guitar", though, sadly), the Ibanez stands firm, proud and distinguished, with a superior look on it's face; It took me a while before I could subdue and befriend it, unlike the Peavey's "I go with anyone" attitude. Yet that's what the beauty of taming is all about. What do I hate about it? Possibly everything, possibly nothing. But the thing that ticks my nerves, still, is the aforementioned buzzing frets (though, I reiterate, that is not a fault of the builder). And, lastly, my favourite feature of the guitar is, as you might not have guessed, the neck. 24 medium frets of sizzling speed, Ultra-fast picking and high screams, on a fast and responsive neck. That is, ultimately, what the GRG 170 is all about. Versatility and adaptability, all with an affordable price tag.
Getting used to the extra 2 strings, which is a little awkward. And the fanned frets is something new too. It's kind of like learning the basics of swimming, then decide to try the diving board. LOL. I'm cool with that, as it saves me from buying a bunch of guitars along the way to be comfortable with this concept. I was adding a 2nd tuner to my gear. This is a good tuner, but it defaults back to 440 Hz with every power down. I tune to 415, half step down and leave it there. My D'Addario tuner maintains whatever Hz adjustment was made prior to power down. I made the bad assumption that others of a quality brand would support this too. This tuner appears to be a decent quality item. The most important thin, of course is it works! Follow the colour indicator to the correct colour and your guitar is in tune. A neat touch is because of the ball joints, the tuner can be mounted on the back side of the headstock, out of view of an audience but still fully visible to the user. The other point is. I was surprised to fine this heavy of a guage of strings. I didn't know they existed. The thing about heavy strings is that you have much more ability to play with dynamic resonance – something you can't really get with light guage strings. With these strings, you can play as softly as you wish but when you really want it to "come out" they don't disappoint. I also only play with the fleshy tip of my fingers which melds into the subtle nuances of chord and solo performance.garycgrieve
The package is for C standard, not Drop C as some people mistakenly think…well, I guess you could use them for Drop C if you like veeeery stiff strings. If you want strings for Drop C, I'd suggest a skinny top/heavy bottom set of strings with an 11 up top and a 54 or so on the bottom so the bottom E tuned to C doesn't get floppy and knocked out of tune easily. Anyway, I've been using these for a long time on my USA core line PRS Custom 24 in C standard. They seem fine for going down a half step to B standard and feel fine even up half a step to C# standard. That's as high as I'd tune these strings up, though. I couldn't recommend these strings more!Josh
I have these strings on my schecter c-1 SLS blackjack tuned all the way down to drop A#, and let me tell you, despite being labeled as optimized for drop C, I don't recommend them for that tuning. 11-52s, 12-54s and 11-56s are better for Drop C, but for Drop B and Drop A#, you will not find a better gauge than these on a 25.5 scale length guitar or a 26.5 baritone. The tension is absolutely perfect! It feels like a 10-52 set in E standard with the E string tuned to D! Like with all D'addarios, they are bright, long lasting, they feel smooth and they absolutely love locking tremolos. I can yank my floyd rose all I want and it still will not go out of tune. Since D'addarios are bright as I stated before, they also remain clear under high gain, which I use my marshall JVM on the red channel with a maxon OD as a boost and a peavey 5150. Between the tuning stability, the tension, the reliability, the playability and the string life, you cannot go wrong with these for baritone tunings!Daniel

I have been using Stingjoy string on my 3 Ibanez electric guitars and a 5 string Fender Jazz bass bass for a couple years now. I really cannot comment on the bass strings- I just do not change them often enough. The electric guitars on the other hand I change quite frequently. I have found that the Strinjoy strings make more and a broader sound 'acoustically'- that is with the guitar unplugged, and as I use low to medium output PUPS that 'acoustic' sound translates when plugged in. Over the years I have managed to get a handle on Floyd Rose double locking systems which can offer really solid tuning stability once you do learn how to manage them. With the Stringjoy strings the tuning stability on my FR guitars went from very good to ridiculously solid. Once the a new set of strings are settled in, If I stick to whole tone bends or < and nothing environmental intervenes, I can play 6 plus hours a day and be not need to tune, or if I do it is just to sharpen the high E and perhaps B string occasionally. The tuning stability coupled with the great sound and extended time the strings sound good has made Stringjoy strings my electric guitar strings of choice.Shaun F
This FiveStar review is really more of a projected rating. At the time I ordered the super balanced set, I also ordered a set of Broadways. They are beautiful strings – amazing tone and vibracy. Plus they’ve lasted 3 months- a LONG for all the bending I do. This may be partly because I also decided to use the StringJoy string conditioner, a product Ive always stayed away from. Stringjoys formula is awesome and most importantly safe for the guitar wood and finish (I ran a test on a couple beaters). I’m looking forward to trying the Balanced set- I’ve pieced sets together to get that combination- perfect for taming the loud G string on my Strat. I have been using Stingjoy string on my 3 Ibanez electric guitars and a 5 string Fender Jazz bass bass for a couple years now. I really cannot comment on the bass strings- I just do not change them often enough. The electric guitars on the other hand I change quite frequently. I have found that the Strinjoy strings make more and a broader sound 'acoustically'- that is with the guitar unplugged, and as I use low to medium output PUPS that 'acoustic' sound translates when plugged in. Over the years I have managed to get a handle on Floyd Rose double locking systems which can offer really solid tuning stability once you do learn how to manage them. With the Stringjoy strings the tuning stability on my FR guitars went from very good to ridiculously solid. Once the a new set of strings are settled in, If I stick to whole tone bends or < and nothing environmental intervenes, I can play 6 plus hours a day and be not need to tune, or if I do it is just to sharpen the high E and perhaps B string occasionally. The tuning stability coupled with the great sound and extended time the strings sound good has made Stringjoy strings my electric guitar strings of choice.Shaun F
This FiveStar review is really more of a projected rating. At the time I ordered the super balanced set, I also ordered a set of Broadways. They are beautiful strings – amazing tone and vibracy. Plus they’ve lasted 3 months- a LONG for all the bending I do. This may be partly because I also decided to use the StringJoy string conditioner, a product Ive always stayed away from. Stringjoys formula is awesome and most importantly safe for the guitar wood and finish (I ran a test on a couple beaters). I’m looking forward to trying the Balanced set- I’ve pieced sets together to get that combination- perfect for taming the loud G string on my Strat. It’s handy that StringJoy makes it so easy to customize your sets. I’ve also tried both of their acoustic strings, in various guages and they’ve all been top notch! Thanks StringJoy! If you’re on the fence about buying these strings, go for it! They are worth the few extra bucks- a nice sonic treat.
