D Angelico Electric Guitar For Sale (2023 Update)

I waited until I had this awhile before submitting a review. I was a little disappointed that the fret ends overlapped the neck binding just a very tiny bit. But it's not noticeable at all when your playing and I've gotten totally over that. This thing is absolutely beautiful, it is so fun to play, and the Seymour Duncans are the best. Never has such fantastic tones came out of my little tube amp before. Those pups seal the deal. This thing has more sustain that any electric guitar I have ever owned. Some people complain about the giant ornamental headstock. But I believe that is partially responsible for adding sustain because it adds a lot of mass to the neck.Dave

My wife got me this for Christmas, at one of the "Deal of the Day" prices. As someone with 10+ guitars, including American Gibsons and Fenders, I can't recommend this enough, particularly at the DotD price. Out of the box, setup and intonation were fine, the action is nice and low, and it plays great. No buzzes anywhere on the fret board. Great tone unplugged, even better with the P-90s when plugged in. Quality wise – it gives up very little to guitars costing a lot more. The tuners work well, the bridge, knobs, and switch gear are all totally fine as well. The Duncan P-90 pickups sound fantastic, and you'd be hard pressed to find a lot of other guitars with American pickups at that price. The nut is plastic, so if you were looking for something to upgrade, that would be where I'd start. The frets could use a quick polishing and the board could use some lemon oil – but that's true of every single new guitar I've ever bought in this price range, so nothing new there. I love the blue burst color, and the guitar is super light in my hands. I really wanted a hollow or semi-hollow with P-90s, and this really scratched that itch at a fantastic price. I wouldn't hesitate to get another D'Angelico after owning this one!Amir

My D'Angelico SS Boardwalk came with 4 wire USA Seymour Duncan "HOT ROD" pickups (SH2 & SH4). It also has a 24 3/4" (Gibson) scale, a thin-taper C-cut neck, a 14" radius with medium jumbo frets, and a durable 2 piece maple neck which is flawlessly finished in thin Poly (not nitro). The factory fret-job is as least as good as my factory PLEKKED Gibson. The playability is great, and visually (as you can see) it's comparable to the ES-335 (I actually like the sound of USA Seymour Duncan SH pickups better than Burstbuckers).Tim

This was my second run at a D'Angelico. My first try was an all mahogany acoustic offered through M/F as an exclusive. The neck on that one required the full run of the truss rod, and even then didn't come close to straight. I thought about sending that one to the luthier, but traded it at GC. So, this was my second try (I really want to like this brand). It is a pretty guitar (all white), but it just doesn't like to be looked at up close, like a car that looks great from fifty feet away, and then you find out it's all bondo… Again, neck straightness problems. But even more troubling, was a flaw in the neck on the treble side between the 6th and 7th fret. Looked like an impact to the neck, binding, and fret board during the manufacturing or packaging process, maybe after paint. The finish was cracked, and had a noticeable ridge when playing. A strong light source parallel to the neck revealed the damage that was clearly felt. There were paint runs on the neck, as well. The pickups were mounted in reversed position, neck mounted at bridge, bridge mounted at neck so it was impossible to level the neck pick up, and tone was weak and muddy, so the wiring was suspect as well. There were small wounds in the fret board that were visible. The binding didn't line up well at joints. Guitar was well packaged (so was the acoustic) and came in a hard case, so can't blame UPS. I didn't make it to checking out the setup and fret condition, as every defect showed itself in the first ten seconds. I hope other people have been luckier with this brand than I have, but sometimes it just works out like this. All in all, I regret going through the hassle of ordering this guitar, it was a stupid deal of the day/clearance special at more than 50% off list, even at that price, and then returning it. I'm afraid it will show up as an open box…. ps. gave it a star for the packaging and case, and gave it another star 'cause it sure would look pretty hanging on a wall somewherebarn

At first I thought this guitar would be fun to own, just because it was unusual and different. It's not comfortable to play. It will not fit most guitar stands. The more I look at it the less I like it. What were they thinking ? If I lean it up against anything it just wants to fall over. I have other guitars that sound better and are easier to handle and play. The D'Angelico brand is quality, they had to know this was a big mistake. I should have bought an SD.cheetah121

This guitar is great. I've been waiting for D'Angelico to release a solid body at an affordable price. Sounds great through my Supro tube amp… a very full, and warm sound. Also sounds great through my pedal rack. This guitar really gives me the versatility I need. Highly recommended.Zander

I cant believe how good this D'Angelico is. Workmanship is perfect – It looks stunning. I got the vintage tint natural color which looks so beautiful to me, and the flamed maple rims and back are very classy almost 3D looking and really set it off I removed the factory fitted roundwound strings which were quite bright to my ears, and put on a set of flatwound D'Addario Chormes 12's which made it sound so much louder and feel much nicer. Acoustically it is pretty loud. When plugged in, it sounds superb, the Kent Armstrong pick up is simply wonderful – full, clear and fat sounding and it has that big warm classic jazz sound. I tried out a lot of archtops in the same price range and this was way by far the best of them. I almost bought a Ibanez LGB30 which was fantastic, but this one for me was the better of the two and more of the jazz tone I was looking for. It came with a nice hard shell case too. I will be keeping this guitar. Its exceeded my expectations in every way.6 stringed picker

I'm a recent convert to D'Angelico guitars. I had seen them at big box retailers for a couple of years, but always dismissed them as overpriced imports until I saw one heavily discounted and picked it up. I had been looking for an inexpensive jazz box to experiment with and it fit the bill (EXL-1 model), so I took it home. Once I really starting playing it I was blown away by the quality. These are not your typical imports. The fit and finish are better than most and absolutely the equal of (or better than) any American made guitars. Once I was sold on the brand, I started checking out some of their other offerings. I have a custom shop '59 Les Paul reissue, but it's too expensive for me to leave it out as a daily player, so I've been looking for another HH to serve as my daily driver. The SS does everything I want. It's lightweight, but not so light that you get neck dive (like an SG). The neck profile is very comfortable to me – it's smaller than the '59's neck, but thicker than the typical modern C. The pickups on the Excel-level model are very good. I would say they're slightly warmer than a standard PAF but not muddy. The pickups on this Deluxe model are fantastic. Seymour Duncan '59's (you can disregard the mfg.-specific DA prefix – they're the SD '59's you'd get straight from them and you can find plenty of reviews and discussions of them online). They'll give you any tone you want from a humbucker. What sends this Deluxe model into "perfect guitar" territory is the addition of the 6-way switch. You can split any humbucker, but you won't necessarily like the single-coil sound from any humbucker. These could have been designed for splitting. Also, nearly every maker uses push-pull pots for splitting which, for me, is ridiculous. If you happen to want to split coils while playing, it's nearly impossible to pull the pot without turning it some at the same time. The 6-way switch is fast and snappy. When you throw Grover locking tuners and the other premium components into the mix, I can't think of anything that could possibly be done to upgrade this guitar. If you haven't played one – give it shot. You won't regret it.Big Pete

This is just a terrific instrument. It's what we've come to expect from the quality producers in S Korea. The trim is flawless, and the matte midnight was the perfect choice. Intonation is perfect. The sustain stays on or nearly on pitch throughout attenuation. Pots are sensitive/effective from ~2.5 to 10, which in my experience is better than most. The six-way switch locks in distinctly different sounds. I play mostly jazz/blues, so I can't comment on the harder rock side of things, but it's beautiful clean. And IMHO, clean is where the test should be.Delivery was impressive, ordered early Thanksgiving afternoon, delivered Saturday morning. They must have known I was going to buy, and had it on the truck addressed and ready to go when I made the purchase! 12-04-18 I originally ordered a new Gibson Les Paul Classic 2018 goldtop because I wanted the P-90 pickups. I was able to get Private Reserve agent Mike Treece to help me with this order. He bent over backwards to help me through this process. Musician's Friend had 8 on order from Gibson, but only 5 came in, and Gibson did not fulfill the rest of the order and I was one of those that got the order cancelled. This was not Musician's Friend's fault, but Gibson's. This was all after I waited over a month to get it. I started searching again, and a very nice Musician's Friend customer service agent named Mike Finch sent me a link where I discovered the D'Angelico Deluxe Bedford guitar with P-90 pickups and a swamp ash body. I had Mike Treece check it out for me and after seeing some photos of it, I bought it after getting a great deal from Mike. A little consolation for the Gibson deal not happening. I knew about D'Angelico guitars, but I was not aware that these new models for 2018 were the first solid body guitars in their 85 year history. This guitar is just so unique! The swamp ash body on mine is gorgeous. It's a two piece body, but both sides match very well. The pickups are USA made Seymour Duncan pickups designed just for these D'Angelico models. The inlays are a beautiful split block with Mother of pearl and abalone. Makes the fingerboard look beautiful. The Pau Ferro fretboard feels really nice to the touch. The tuners are locking Grover Rotomatics in gold. The headstock on these are just a work of art. This guitar has a look to me like a mixture of a Fender Jazz Master guitar, and a Les Paul, and D'Angelico. The guitar is very comfortable to play, and the pickups sound amazing! No regrets here, as this guitar will wail. This guitar even comes with a deluxe hardshell, plush lined case with the D'Angelico logo screen printed in gold on the lid. The guitar is made in South Korea, but the quality craftsmanship shows well on this. Great Job D'Angelico!Cliff

*It's really a 4.5/5 but I rounded up. I've spent about a month with the Bedford Premier SH. I got the blue w/ white pick guard version on a deep discount from a certain nationwide bricks and mortar retailer. I've noticed a surprising lack of reviews for this instrument so here's my contribution. Feel. It feels superb. I love Fender-y necks (not too fat) and this fits in my hand beautifully. The satin finish is lovely and quick, and the way it tapers seamlessly into the body is unique and top notch imo. The string spacing is great; action came low and neat. The neck is a 14in radius which I thought I wouldn't prefer. I love 9.5 radius, but I honestly have no complaints in this area. I also thought I'd miss the snap of a 25.5 scale but this one is still pretty snappy. I like to "feel" the acoustic resonance (and since I play unplugged around the house this is a great feature). One thing to consider: the three pickups are quite close together so you can end up striking them with your pick. There is a little less room than with a strat. The guitar feels great all around 4.75/5 in this area for me. Sound. There's a wide range of tones here. Before we get to that we need to talk about these Duncan Designed pups. Descriptions of this guitar say that it has two single coils and a mini-humbucker. After playing around with it, I think we're dealing with stacked hum-buckers in neck and middle positions. There is absolutely no 60-cycle hum on these two pups and they both have a nice high output with very sparkly highs. I find myself occasionally rolling off just a little bit of the treble with the tone control. I noticed that there's a noticeable volume drop between the "single coil" mid pup and the bridge mini-humbucker. The mini-humbucker is also noisier (a little hum and buzz that you wouldn't expect from a humbucker). The mini-hum has a pleasantly vintage type tone that's really bright and useful without being piercing. I adjusted the pickup heights to even out some of the volume differences–that helped but didn't totally solve the discrepancy. I'm okay with this. One major bonus for me is that you can get a lovely position 4 strat quack when the neck and middle pups are engaged. Love that sound. You don't get the position 2 quack from the bridge and middle though–just FYI. It's a good tone with plenty of cut and clarity but it's no Cory Wong potion. Also, I found a compressor to be a major tone tool for this guitar for what it's worth. Sound is probably a 4/5 for me.Caleb

First of all, D'Angelico has created an undeniably true modern classic design with this model. The short scale and very thin neck may be the only issue some folks may have. I have two of these, blue and white, and there is a slight difference in neck thickness. My blue one is slightly thinner and not as comfortable as the white one. For an Indonesian made guitar, these have a high quality feel. I've had American made guitars coating way more that had more flaws so it really comes down to QC. Tonally, it's thicker than a thinline tele which I thought might be a close relative so you get great blues out of it.Dave

I love offset guitars for their comfort, les pauls for their scale length, mahogany tone, and strats for their single coils and trems. This guitar covers everything I want. Also, to get one in SH at this price is awesome. Mine was an open box item so the guitar came needing a new set of strings. It was easily playable, but had some tuning stability issues. No problem. New strings on. I set it up to the best of my knowledge. Intonation was just slightly off, but any good youtube video can get you there. The guitar itself was beautiful. The pictures dont do the flake justice. A couple of minor finish flaws, but I'm rough on my toys anyway. It's super light, but still no neck dive. The tuners are very precise as well. The thin satin neck plays very fast and accessing the upper frets is a dream with the cut out neck joints. The fretwork is decent enough for me. Sounds like a strat, plays like a LP. this guitar is an awesome take on an offset! I love the sound of my Bedford and it is extremely comfortable to play. it has everything you could dream of tone wise in a guitar. this guitar is great for playing a soft clean tone, or shredding with distortion. I couldn't be any happier than playing my Bedford. would definitely recommend this guitar over any fender or Gibson.John

12-04-18 I originally ordered a new Gibson Les Paul Classic 2018 goldtop because I wanted the P-90 pickups. I was able to get Private Reserve agent Mike Treece to help me with this order. He bent over backwards to help me through this process. Musician's Friend had 8 on order from Gibson, but only 5 came in, and Gibson did not fulfill the rest of the order and I was one of those that got the order cancelled. This was not Musician's Friend's fault, but Gibson's. This was all after I waited over a month to get it. I started searching again, and a very nice Musician's Friend customer service agent named Mike Finch sent me a link where I discovered the D'Angelico Deluxe Bedford guitar with P-90 pickups and a swamp ash body. I had Mike Treece check it out for me and after seeing some photos of it, I bought it after getting a great deal from Mike. A little consolation for the Gibson deal not happening. I knew about D'Angelico guitars, but I was not aware that these new models for 2018 were the first solid body guitars in their 85 year history. This guitar is just so unique! The swamp ash body on mine is gorgeous. It's a two piece body, but both sides match very well. The pickups are USA made Seymour Duncan pickups designed just for these D'Angelico models. The inlays are a beautiful split block with Mother of pearl and abalone. Makes the fingerboard look beautiful. The Pau Ferro fretboard feels really nice to the touch. The tuners are locking Grover Rotomatics in gold. The headstock on these are just a work of art. This guitar has a look to me like a mixture of a Fender Jazz Master guitar, and a Les Paul, and D'Angelico. The guitar is very comfortable to play, and the pickups sound amazing! No regrets here, as this guitar will wail. This guitar even comes with a deluxe hardshell, plush lined case with the D'Angelico logo screen printed in gold on the lid. The guitar is made in South Korea, but the quality craftsmanship shows well on this. Great Job D'Angelico!Cliff

This was my second run at a D'Angelico. My first try was an all mahogany acoustic offered through M/F as an exclusive. The neck on that one required the full run of the truss rod, and even then didn't come close to straight. I thought about sending that one to the luthier, but traded it at GC. So, this was my second try (I really want to like this brand). It is a pretty guitar (all white), but it just doesn't like to be looked at up close, like a car that looks great from fifty feet away, and then you find out it's all bondo… Again, neck straightness problems. But even more troubling, was a flaw in the neck on the treble side between the 6th and 7th fret. Looked like an impact to the neck, binding, and fret board during the manufacturing or packaging process, maybe after paint. The finish was cracked, and had a noticeable ridge when playing. A strong light source parallel to the neck revealed the damage that was clearly felt. There were paint runs on the neck, as well. The pickups were mounted in reversed position, neck mounted at bridge, bridge mounted at neck so it was impossible to level the neck pick up, and tone was weak and muddy, so the wiring was suspect as well. There were small wounds in the fret board that were visible. The binding didn't line up well at joints. Guitar was well packaged (so was the acoustic) and came in a hard case, so can't blame UPS. I didn't make it to checking out the setup and fret condition, as every defect showed itself in the first ten seconds. I hope other people have been luckier with this brand than I have, but sometimes it just works out like this. All in all, I regret going through the hassle of ordering this guitar, it was a stupid deal of the day/clearance special at more than 50% off list, even at that price, and then returning it. I'm afraid it will show up as an open box…. ps. gave it a star for the packaging and case, and gave it another star 'cause it sure would look pretty hanging on a wall somewherebarn

This guitar has a retro Art deco look that won't appeal to everyone, but it feels and sounds very well made and although it looks very much a Jazz Guitar it can handle blues and other styles.Reviewed by guitarguitar custome

This is now 1 of 4 D'Angelico guitars that I own. I find all of them to be way above average and think any guitarist would love owning one. The balance between the pickups is terrific and the P90's are of the highest quality and have both warmth and some bite. The fretwork is excellent and overall I didn't have to do much adjustment to get the guitar playable. The guitar feels great and could be anyone's #1 axe with no problem. there is a roller bridge on this model to help with the intonation, and it works great. There will always be some single coil hum with P90's, but this set in very manageable. I love the tone, feel, and mojo of this guitar and think you will too. I did put a sleeve on the whammy bar that softens the feel, but no other changes have been made. I even like the kind of surf color… makes the guitar unique…. LUV IT!!!Kevin

Saw a video of Kurt Rosenwinkel playing this guitar at NAMM so decided to pick one up. This is the most impressive guitar I've ever owned. The satin yet set-thru neck really makes this something unique and special. I've also never played a guitar that is so light, yet has such a piano like sustain. Great job D'Angelico.Hunter

I was turned on to D'Angelico by a friend who owns a DC. After playing it and being surprised by such a reasonable price, I browsed their guitars and couldn't get enough of the Deluxe Atlantic, so I picked one up. I've been playing for 10+ years, and after a month with it, I can say this is my favorite guitar I've ever played. The build quality is fantastic (built in Korea not USA but I don't mind), not a single piece of hardware on it seems to be cheaply made. The ergonomics are also great, the belly cut, single cutaway, and neck finish all make this thing a dream to play. The Seymour Duncans sound beautiful, and being able to easily switch from crisp and articulate single-coil tones to juicier humbucker tones with the coil-tapping knobs is a feature I never knew I wanted until I got it in the Atlantic, and now I don't play anything else. I've yet to change strings, but really appreciate the locking tuners and hardshell case that come with the guitar. Finally, this thing is just gorgeous. I went for the black- its a shame it's so humid where I live, otherwise it would be proudly displayed on my wall. My one and only qualm is with the knobs- I don't think they fit very well with the aesthetic of guitar- would have preferred some kind of gold accented knobs to go with the rest of the hardware. Luckily they're the easiest things to swap! Anyway, cannot recommend this guitar enough.Will

First, the good: This is a solid piece of craftsmanship, and I can't find any defects in it at all. It arrived perfectly set up, just needed tuning before it was ready to play. It sounds very nice, and the pickup is very responsive. You can either dial the tone knob all the way up and make it treble heavy, or keep it reigned in and have a more "full" sound. She plays well, and the neck definitely feels better than my other guitars (but they've got D-shaped necks, this is a C-shape). Frets don't buzz, playabillity is 100% there. The bad: This is more of an electric-acoustic guitar than it is an electric hollow-body. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but as far as how it feels, that's it. There's no real fret access beyond the 15th fret, but the higher frets *are* responsive. Overall, I'd say this is a beautiful guitar, but it's not *the* guitar. It looks amazing, and you can DEFINITELY use it for any recording / gigging… But if you're buying this thinking you'll get some sort of "magic tone" then you'd be sorely disappointed. I was fortunate enough to see this up as a "Stupid Deal of the Day," and I'm proud to say I'm smart enough to know when a D'Angelico goes on sale to pick it up. I admit I was hesitant because of the color (a blue guitar? really?), but the more I thought about it the more fitting this beautiful blue is, given the '40s-era, Art Deco styling. You will want to buy flat-wound strings concurrently with the purchase of this guitar. I put on some D'Addario ECG25 Chromes Flat Wound Electric Guitar Strings, Light, 12-52, and it makes all the difference. I also lowered the turn-dial bridge to its lowest. I get the sweetest sound when I play directly over the pick-up, finger-style (no pick). The hard-shell cash is fantastic as well! This is my first "jazz box," and I am absolutely in love with this guitar. I've played classical, rock, and acoustic for over 30 years, and I finally decided I want to learn jazz. I feel like this is the perfect guitar to get me there. Highly recommended!Jason C

*It's really a 4.5/5 but I rounded up. I've spent about a month with the Bedford Premier SH. I got the blue w/ white pick guard version on a deep discount from a certain nationwide bricks and mortar retailer. I've noticed a surprising lack of reviews for this instrument so here's my contribution. Feel. It feels superb. I love Fender-y necks (not too fat) and this fits in my hand beautifully. The satin finish is lovely and quick, and the way it tapers seamlessly into the body is unique and top notch imo. The string spacing is great; action came low and neat. The neck is a 14in radius which I thought I wouldn't prefer. I love 9.5 radius, but I honestly have no complaints in this area. I also thought I'd miss the snap of a 25.5 scale but this one is still pretty snappy. I like to "feel" the acoustic resonance (and since I play unplugged around the house this is a great feature). One thing to consider: the three pickups are quite close together so you can end up striking them with your pick. There is a little less room than with a strat. The guitar feels great all around 4.75/5 in this area for me. Sound. There's a wide range of tones here. Before we get to that we need to talk about these Duncan Designed pups. Descriptions of this guitar say that it has two single coils and a mini-humbucker. After playing around with it, I think we're dealing with stacked hum-buckers in neck and middle positions. There is absolutely no 60-cycle hum on these two pups and they both have a nice high output with very sparkly highs. I find myself occasionally rolling off just a little bit of the treble with the tone control. I noticed that there's a noticeable volume drop between the "single coil" mid pup and the bridge mini-humbucker. The mini-humbucker is also noisier (a little hum and buzz that you wouldn't expect from a humbucker). The mini-hum has a pleasantly vintage type tone that's really bright and useful without being piercing. I adjusted the pickup heights to even out some of the volume differences–that helped but didn't totally solve the discrepancy. I'm okay with this. One major bonus for me is that you can get a lovely position 4 strat quack when the neck and middle pups are engaged. Love that sound. You don't get the position 2 quack from the bridge and middle though–just FYI. It's a good tone with plenty of cut and clarity but it's no Cory Wong potion. Also, I found a compressor to be a major tone tool for this guitar for what it's worth. Sound is probably a 4/5 for me.Caleb

First of all, D'Angelico has created an undeniably true modern classic design with this model. The short scale and very thin neck may be the only issue some folks may have. I have two of these, blue and white, and there is a slight difference in neck thickness. My blue one is slightly thinner and not as comfortable as the white one. For an Indonesian made guitar, these have a high quality feel. I've had American made guitars coating way more that had more flaws so it really comes down to QC. Tonally, it's thicker than a thinline tele which I thought might be a close relative so you get great blues out of it.Dave

I love offset guitars for their comfort, les pauls for their scale length, mahogany tone, and strats for their single coils and trems. This guitar covers everything I want. Also, to get one in SH at this price is awesome. Mine was an open box item so the guitar came needing a new set of strings. It was easily playable, but had some tuning stability issues. No problem. New strings on. I set it up to the best of my knowledge. Intonation was just slightly off, but any good youtube video can get you there. The guitar itself was beautiful. The pictures dont do the flake justice. A couple of minor finish flaws, but I'm rough on my toys anyway. It's super light, but still no neck dive. The tuners are very precise as well. The thin satin neck plays very fast and accessing the upper frets is a dream with the cut out neck joints. The fretwork is decent enough for me. Sounds like a strat, plays like a LP. At first I thought this guitar would be fun to own, just because it was unusual and different. It's not comfortable to play. It will not fit most guitar stands. The more I look at it the less I like it. What were they thinking ? If I lean it up against anything it just wants to fall over. I have other guitars that sound better and are easier to handle and play. The D'Angelico brand is quality, they had to know this was a big mistake. I should have bought an SD.cheetah121

This guitar is great. I've been waiting for D'Angelico to release a solid body at an affordable price. Sounds great through my Supro tube amp… a very full, and warm sound. Also sounds great through my pedal rack. This guitar really gives me the versatility I need. Highly recommended.Zander
