I preordered this on AMS without, obviously, trying it out. I had only seen some clips from NAMM, etc. I wanted a ‘noisemaker’ more than anything…a little secret weapon with another flavor on my board. It’s a lot of fun so far. It mentions that it’s not intended for chords like several times in the manual. But honestly, that’s where it gets cool & weird. Like, seriously science fiction stuff. Try it with an expression pedal! I have one for my EQD Avalanche Run so I tried it out on the Mono Synth for kicks and it opened up a whole new level. An excellent pedal. Cool synth sounds with a reasonable amount of variation for each. Not perfect. Being monophonic, some of the sounds require you to be very deliberate when playing as even a slight slurring of notes can cause the pedal to have a little mental breakdown. Overall excellent. I get a variety of good, useable tones out of this one box. In fact, this has replaced the distortion patches I was using on my trusty DOD Bass 30 entirely. To say that I am happy with any stock stompbox is a big deal, because I have only a few left in my collection that I haven't modified the circuitry in to better suit me. This is one of the few originals, and that says volumes. I step on mine regularly, and haven't had any issues with it. I'm not a bass player, but I play one on my records. I've been playing lead guitar for 20 years, and I know good sounds. I say this to inform you that my credentials are in good order. You can get any sort of growl you want, thick or thin- and as much or little of the clean as you need to retain the punch at the same time. The only thing I would change is the color of the box… Since that has absolutely nothing to do with the sound it makes, I'm fine with it. Seriously, I was skeptical too when I saw the price. I got this a while back to add a some gain to play a bit of metal with a bit of overdrive on top as well as fattening the sound of the bass. Unfortunately this will never give you a "smooth" gain sound like having a guitar amp's gain around 2. Having gain down all the way shuts off all sound to the amp, and having it around 2/10 puts on a harsh brittle overdrive no matter the EQ. Sounds a little better with flatwound strings. This pedal goes all out or nothing. If a "Hysteria" sound is what you're going for, this will do it but not a true amp low/med-gain sound.Fear

I love this pedal. The option to have one octave up and two down allong with the sry signal is great and creates a full sound. The tone is great, both the poly and classic modes, but the toneprint option is the real winner. Creating sounds and importing pre-created ones is a great way to dial in exactly what you want to sound like.
This pedal takes your playing to new lows! You can play with the settings and achieve amazing effects, the knobs are offering; 1 octave lower, 2 octaves lower, 1 octave higher, and so you blend it at your own taste. But the best part is probably the TonePrint, it is an App that you get for free in your computer then you have access to a wide variety of settings, effects and you can save them to your pedal, this is an amazing feature from TC electronic. Im using together the Sub n Up with the Hall of Fame 2, amazing results. You can use them both not only with bass but they work amazing with keyboard as well. I've been looking for something to make my guitar sound like a bass for years. There have been several octave shifters, but mostly monophonic and producing ghastly warbling sounds. This subnup pedal produces a good sounding bass using just the sub1 control, and adding the toneprint smooth bass patch turns it into a really nice punchy bass that reflects the tone of the string you are playing so you can get anything from a bright twang to a deep boom just using your fingers and there is no noticeable delay in the conversion, you play a note and it sounds immediately – older pedals used to have up to a half second gap between playing and hearing the note. This pedal does heaps more than that, several YouTube videos show it off, but I didn't see any that showed it being used to replace a bass when you just need it for a few songs and don't want to bring two guitars with you. I haven't had a chance to play with the tone editor yet, but that promises even more variation. Great pedal at a good price.Robin D.

Oops… Almost gave this a negative review: Watch out, the thing comes with headphones/console optimized output as factory default. So if you hook this up to an amp, first go to the System settings and change them. This makes a very big difference (from "what the.." to "wow!"). Also note that this is an analog type synth sound: Pat Metheney, John McLaughlin (80's Mahavishnu), etc. So, if you're looking for something like that, this is gold. If you're looking for real Steinway sampled sounds, etc. go for the ones with the MIDI pickup. You won't get Scott Henderson's flute-type sounds exactly (those are digital), but you will get sounds which are at least equally great (but analog). As far as John McLaughlin-type sounds, you'll be jamming all day long on this thing. The complement software (not required, but handy) works as advertised so far on a MacBook Air.Alex
I love the fullness that it adds to my sound. I love the ambience it adds to my acoustic guitar. I can not use all the samples it contains but Tone Central has bunches of usable configurations to download. A lot of the tonalities are special effects phrases that you can use to add to recordings. I run some of the calmer effects under my guitar to fatten up its tone. You know something is there but it is not overwhelming. I have had the earlier synth version pedals and they also contained the spatial sounds of a keyboard. Those are not necessarily useful for live performances. This pedal has more practical sounds to edit and gain controls of. The ambient sounds worked well for electric guitars too. Being old school I want my tone on top and not be smothered by effects. Used tastefully this pedal works live and in the studio.
Alert: As a highly experienced musician and highly experienced audio engineer, this box is deep and wide and I keep diving in! For the guitarist who wants to plug and play, this box has great sounds but you can spend less and edit less and play comfortably. The synth section is mind blowing and even conventional effects like limiters delays, reverbs, etc are rich! The SY-300 speaks to me in tongues! It's incredible. – The only thing that is missing is a stereo effects loop but it does everything else so well that it gets 5 Stars.bgl

If you liked the SY1 but wished it had presets, here ya go! In a nutshell it's the SY1 with presets. It's got the same sounds and same limited control features but now you can tweak and save. Programming is very easy, more so if you are already familiar with the Boss 200 style pedals. Check out the zillion YouTube videos to hear for yourself. Sounds just like that when you get it home 🙂 Of course I wish it was more powerful like an Enzo or C4 but those two require a PHD to get anything other than a Theremin on LSD type of sound. If you need simple 80's goodness added to your pedalboard then this is your ticket. It's fun and good for you. Buy one.AJB
Tried the Sy-1 and it sounded great but no presets. Bought an Sy-300 and to many effects cover the synth sounds and too complicated for me. The Sy-200 sits in the Goldilocks zone for me. It's just right. The synth sounds are beautiful and 80 percent of the factory presets are usable IMO. If I want effects I can add my own using the effects loop. I really like the Sy-200.Jack

This pedal is not for all but for those who like to have an extra set of colors to paint with- this does what it says- turns your guitar into a simple monophonic synthesizer. It tracks well and gives some really cool tones and invigorates playing and creativity. Some dont like the harshness – but like every synth, the raw sound is the starting point. Adding effects make synths shine so I put it early in my pedal chain. Running it through a light overdrive softens it up and smooths it out. Adding a little delay really made it sparkle. I ended up with a zipper-like p-funk sound for a new track. Build quality is great and the tiny footprint is just awesome. I would definitely buy more pigtronix pedals- this being my first. I give it four stars only because I cant seem to give 4.5. it is by nature a limited pedal and admittedly a bit harsh. It seemed to output much higher than my clean signal goin in so taming it required a little more effort than I would have thought- but its possible I am doing something wrong or need more time with it. But heres the deal: I wanted a pedal to insert in my chain that could help me sound like no one else and this definitely helped do the trick. If you want a synth on your board and dont want to break the bank for an occasional effect forwicked leads- then this pedal is a definite winner. Check out R.J. I've got both the GT-1 and the GT-1B units and they are so different. I don't know why, but I find the bass unit much easier to use. The effects shapes that you want are so much easier to dial in. Maybe it's something to do with the distortion types that each unit tries to emulate – you get loads on the GT-1 and only a few on the GT-1B. And the amp emulations too – you get maybe 1/2 – 2/3 on the bass unit. What I would say is that it is well worth spending some time doing a deep-dive of the sounds you can get out of this unit. There's not much help here, you will have to grind to get the sound you want, but it probably will be there somewhere. The Boss Tone sounds lab will only get you so far and there really aren't any shortcuts that I've found to the sort of tone I want for any specific patch. It's worth spending the time noodling around with the unit and at least you can set up a load of blank presets by whatever category you want (I set up amp emulators in 10-set batches). Would I buy it again? Yep, absolutely. If you asked me that about the GT-1, I might not be so sure.Cat F.
The BOSS GT-1B is a really great piece of kit. Was obsessing with synth pedals but couldn't decide which one and then would require an expression pedal etc. The Boss SY-1 doesn't offer presets. I'm pleased with the GT-1B – many many possibilities for designing patches, built in expression pedal & 99 presets. Loads of PROS – Great value. The potential options for combining effects is vast. The build is great, knobs & buttons work easily. I dont use it as a standalone but combine with some analogue pedals, which is a good set up. Still saves plenty of space on pedalboard. CONS – you have to put some graft to get familiar with the software and best usage. There are instructions for the basic operation, using the buttons/dials on the unit but to get the full hang of the software for assigning parameters within patches, BOSS do not supply much info. There are some useful vids online though and chat on talkbass etc – Octave fx doesn't always track brilliantly. Is OK and perfectly usable, but not long sustain. – The Synth fx can be a bit OTT & erratic, if up too high. But great synth type sounds achieved with combining envelope, fuzz, octave, wave etc I haven't used any other effects processor so can't directly compare, but the unit has more than surpassed my main reasons for buying it. Sound: I’m really happy with the sound pallet available on the SY-1. You can get Metheny style saw wave/string style leads, several organ sounds, Bladerunner basses etc. It’s got a lot of 80’s synth vibe to it. The sound editing is somewhat limited yes, but that’s exactly why I went back to the SY1 from the other synth pedals I tried. Sound for sound, I found the SY1 had the most usable sounds for my style. Pair it up with some chorus, delay, and long decay reverb and it is capable of sounding incredible. Features: By far the best feature to me is that everything you need to make/change sounds is on the top. No PC editor required. While it does limit the capabilities it’s also much easier for an old guy like me to get musical sounds out of it without breaking out a manual or re-learning everything I have forgotten about synths LFO’s and filters from the '80s. Ease of Use: Very easy to use. Plug it in, turn some knobs until you smile. Pair it with an expression pedal for even more fun things to do. Quality: It’s Boss. It’s built like a tank. If zombies rush the stage it could be used as a weapon. Clean it up, plug it back in, and keep playing. Value: When compared to similar offerings from Source Audio, Meris, EHX, I think the SY1 is a fair value. A bit less functionality but what you get instead is easy access to usable sounds for a few bucks less. Manufacturer Support: In the 40 years I’ve been using Boss I’ve only contacted them once. No issues. The Wow Factor: Synth pedals aren’t for everyone, sure. But for that occasional something different on a lead or just for tooling around over ambient soundscapes they can be a lot of fun. Overall: I would consider myself your garden variety guitar player. I play rhythm and lead in a rock cover band and do some ambient and prog stuff on my own and this fits right in with the rest of the gear on my pedalboard. I’ve tried a few other guitar synth pedals from Boss, Meris, and Source Audio and ended up going back to this one because it fits my style and needs the best. The tracking is very, very good. In my humble opinion it tracks better than the C4. I’m not Alex Hutchings but I can play moderately fast and it keeps up with no issues. Compared to other synth pedals this is much more straightforward but also much more limited in sounds. It’s very 80’s vs some of the more experimental sounds you can get out of the others, but that’s what I was looking for. If you are looking for bleeps and boops sounds or want deep editing, this pedal probably isn’t for you. This is a very enjoyable pedal. Would I recommend it, and is it good value? That depends on your expectations. It benefits from being used in conjunction with other pedals as on there own some of the synth tones are very dry and digital. I feed an overdrive into it, and a light reverb after. Adding fuzz to the effects loop also adds to make the overall effect more massive. That being said, I have struggled to find tones that I can use with my (rock) band in a live setting, and I was hoping it would enhance/thicken up my sound. The variations and possibilities are so vast that the sound(s) I am looking for may well still be out there…more fooling around in the bedroom required…ooer!pepsimax360
Build. It’s a Boss so it will probaat still be around when our sun has gone supernova. Sound. Nothing short of amazing when you consider you do not need to screw some kind of special pick-up on your guitar. And there are sounds galore, 11 types that have 11 subtypes each. That’s 121 in totaal! And all your favorites are there, Lead, Organ, Pad, you name it. Use. As straightforward as it could be. Choise your mail type, select a subtype, dial in tone and debt, adjust the mix with the original signal and you are good to go. Features. On the upside this pedal has it’s own effect loop, the sound of the unit can be manipulated with an external expression pedal, for driving the effect up an octave for instance and the front of the pedal (next to the powerinput) has a little switch where you can determine whether you are using the unit with a guitar or a bassguitar. Possible concerns are the facts that there is no MIDI compatibility, sound can’t be restored or recalled and, suprisingly enough, the unit is mono. Bang for the buck? For days! With these possabilities, features and sounds it is basicalky a steal, not to mention how little real estate this unit takes up on your pedalboard.

Sometimes you need the low ends of the B-string of a 5-string bass. I have one but I dont like playing on it. I am a 4-string player!. My solution for those B-string needed songs: the Aguilar Octamizer. It works great. The sound is good. The Octamizer is monophonic so I had to work a bit on my playing style. Warning: watch your bass cabinet!!

This is an unusual review as I am a bit of an unusual guitarist. I play an individualized type of dark ambient psychodelica noisy post-rock. Bought this pedal looking for the occasional weird synth sound only intending to use it here and there. But, when put in front of my chain (in front of fuzzes) I find that it really thickens up the whole sound wall. And when you blend in less synth and more guitar, for cleaner parts, it creates a beautiful and consistent wash. It can be a bit of a flander/phaser as well. It's unexpected that this pedal would actually be …. useful. It will also do the thing it does; creating that 80s synth sound. It's really receptive to the lower registers of my 8 string. All in all, I expected to buy a thing to use very rarily. And as a bit of a pedal snob, I was reluctant to polute my beautiful board with a Digitech thing. But now, I have a different sound. This is a great, solid, pedal. The effects sound great and the options are almost limitless with the various things you can tweak. I have not had the pedal very long and only performed with it once so far so I still have a lot to learn with it. The only con I have right now – and maybe I need to just figure this out better – is that when I switch from Chorus to Flange my volume and wetness of the effect seems different. If I switch to Flange I need to reset a bunch of dials on the pedal before I can just keep playing. That's not a huge deal, but it just is not a perfect scenario for switching back and forth. As a result, I am pretty much just using the Chorus option right now. I have not set up a stereo rig yet but I plan to do that and take advantage of the full effect which will be really cool!Billy
The Digitech Dirty Robot requires a short learning curve but the example settings in the brief manual really helps getting started in crafting Rush-style synth or mini-moog tones. Tracking with guitar is excellent and smooth – no lag. Great for lead, melody and bass tones. nice pedal. this thing is not true bypass so beware. i think there is a true-bypass version for like 30 bux more…what a rip. but wow. everyone who has heard me play through this can't believe how huge it sounds. they always look immediately to the floor and give me a crazy look like "what is that wickedness coming from your cab?" it says in the manual that it does not track the octave and sub-octave parameters. you will lose a lot of thickness tracking. I'm going to experiment with some mics throughout the room cuz i heard it thru a camcorder mic and it sounded better than thru my Korg D1600xd 16 trak. (The head of the amp was output directly to the recorder.) i read a review that said there are only 2 good settings, but if you play slower, spacy grooves or stuff with drum machines…anything where the bass has some freedom, you will like this…i even use it on a fast song for the guitar solo…so if you're shy about your tone and experiementing, maybe this isn't for you. I have a ton of settings marked and ive had it 2 weeks. great surging wah effects…turbo charged distortion effects…String sounds…I have layred massive chords using a boss loop station and that sounds incredible. You will easily find a sound that makes you go "I have totally heard this before" (or wanted to hear it) Susutain is a little weak, but overall, straight wicked. Will kill your bass and bring it back to life, if you're into that. I gave it a 4 because of the tracking issue and because the housing is not as sturdy as i had expected. I guess for the lack of sustain, too. For the price, it BETTER sound this good…and it does. It will be hard to be disappointed if you already expect the small problems of tracking and sustain.before skin

A fun little pedal if you want to experiment with synth tones on a budget and without taking up much board space. Solid construction with metal housing and easily understandable controls. In particular I've found mode 7, the "EDM/Pad", to give some really usable results for background synth drones and swells. Combining it with a compressor to add more sustain works well and I've also had nice results adding some chorus and flanger which can smooth out some of the harsher tones. Tracking and latency seem to be fine. Most modes cope well with chords too, except the organ one (mode 2). Works well with a bass too. On the downside, as a micro pedal the knobs are very small so it's not something you'll want to tweak mid-set, though it does allow for saving presets. If I was going to nitpick I think it would also be more practical if the hold-down-footswtich control changed between modes rather than toggling on the arpeggiator.Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.

This pedal is awesome no mater how poor or rich you are. I'm a guitarist that fills in as a bass player occasionally and this pedal is just what I needed. Just received it two days ago, messed with it for an hour and played live last night. Worked great. Only used two of the presets but the band thought it sounded pretty good considering my bass abilities.woodbutcher51
I wanted an effects pedal with a decent number of effects and a tuner. The B1Xon seemed to fit the bill and I was not disappointed. First it is well built. I can see this being able to stand up to a lot of use, including the pedal. I had a problem many years ago with the pedal on a Zoom 707 but this seems much sturdier. The instructions are clear and I got set up in minutes. The tuner is so easy to use. I then played around with the effects. A few of them seem very similar to others but there are 100, and then by mucking around with the parameters I got myself some great sounds to work with. I've used it almost daily for the last couple of weeks but I've really only just begun – there is so much more to try out. The loop effect could prove quite fun and useful but as I'm recording my sounds anyway using the Zoom R24, I haven't gone into that. I also use a drum machine, so haven't used the rhythm a great deal, but again for someone practicing alone, this gives a good backing to play along to. The patches can be adjusted to produce exactly what you are looking for, saved and can then be moved around the banks so that they follow each other in sequence. This means that when you're on stage and want to switch between two different effects, you're not pressing the foot switch 47 times to switch between them! The only thing I would query is whether I need the pedal, but for the extra few quid I think it may be worth it in the future. The batteries last "up to" 20 hours, but I always recommend getting the mains adapter and using the batteries as back up. I haven't used any other bass effect pedals but I've used a number of guitar effects pedals. I'm currently using a Boss ME80 which has a much greater range and variations, but then again is metal and costs over £200. When I started, I used the Zoom 707 and 707II. These gave me the introduction to effects I wanted before going onto bigger things. The B1Xon is very similar in this respect. For just over £50 the B1Xon is a great, well built, piece of kit that I'm sure will give me all the sounds and variation I need for a few years to come, and if I want to get more serious in the future I can go ahead and spend more money. Based on what I've found so far and the experiences I've had with Zoom products in the past I would certainly recommend this.Peter S
Great pedal – lots of fx, clean, seems well-built and robust. Easy to use and program. Ideal for bass players looking to extend their range of sounds. Bottom line up front: I’m blown away I’ve been playing guitar synths off and on for about 25 years. I’ve had the GR-1, 09, 20, and 33, and the VG-99. The GR-55 was always on my wish list, but it was never in the cards. With the advent of the SY-300 I was intrigued about the possibility of playing synth tones without the GK pickup and 13 pin cable. Wireless guitar synth?? Yes, please! Then Boss introduced the SY-1000. Alex Hutchings’ videos do an awesome job of showing you what it can do. But now that I’ve been able to play mine for a bit (thank you AMS for the 12 pay plan), I am truly blown away by just how powerful it is AND how easy it is to edit with the software editor. I use this product live. It has excellent emulations of other guitars, as well as sitar and banjo, so if you don't want to carry a lot of instruments, this could be the answer. As with other Boss/Roland products, it has a "clunky" interface (e.g., GR 55, GT1000), and in my view, Boss should really work on that. It takes a significant amount of time and experimentation to get usable sounds from the synths, and quite honestly, the presets are novel but mostly useless. You CAN use them as templates for your own sounds, but as I said, this takes a lot of tweaking…if you're into that sort of thing, this is your processor. Sound quality is very good, and effects are excellent. It isn't perfect, but it works, and I'm keeping mine.Old Rocker
It's like I got a bucket of assorted boss pedals. Great sounds! It's all about layering with this thing. After my second round through the interface I was moving patches editing affects programming expression pedals quite easily. With my touchscreen laptop running the PC software the editing is even easier. One of the neatest features for me was the effects send and return being able to be placed anywhere within the virtual effects chain. I can tell it's gonna take some time to really dial in the dynamic synthesizer and sequencer. Hours of fun.Joe
