I've owned one of these for years. It doesn't hang well (neck dive), has the sound that you'd expect out of a shoebox sized cavity (no bass), and is over priced. The only reason for owning one of these is if you are severly cramped for space. Get a Baby Taylor, instead of this thing. They are close to the same price, the last time that I checked.Ken
When I first saw these in the CF Martin catalog, I thought how weird looking they were. When I asked at a local shop about them, I was told they would order one for me, but I would not like it! But I liked classical, nylon string guitars and I wanted to own something from CF Martin. Other than this, Martin GTR does not make anything else like that, unless they invented something since I quit looking. I was very fortunate to discover Musicians Friend, and they at one time had these with a passive pickup. These were on sale at a very good price! I ordered one, it arrived in very good shape, in very good time. I fell absolutely totally in love with it, weird shape and all. You could tell it was a Martin, it reeked quality. It's small, the tone is great, but the volume is not huge. Use it for travel, camping, hanging on the wall for odd moments of practice. It's not a case queen, fussy little guitar, but protect it from too much heat and moisture, it is made with wood and glue. With a pickup you could probably blow away a concert hall with it. Look in the sound hole, it will say where it was made there, and tell you to always use extra-lite nylon strings. No truss rod was standard for ages with nylon string guitars, the Backpacker does not have one. Most guitars eventually need the action adjusted to suit the player, including ones costing 10 to 20 times as much as this one. Mine came with a very nice strap and a special gig bag, both very useful. If this appeals to you, don't hesitate to give it a try. I've had mine for years and still love it. I have had mine for 10 years or more and enjoy it very much. It's not full body sound it's there to have something to practice and play when on holiday or outside on the deck enjoying a cold one. It doesn't take up much room when packing the car either And yes the one I have is an actual classical backpacker guitar that Martin made years ago. I use it with high tension strings DAddario Pro Arte at standard tuning and it holds up very good stays in tune never have a problem with it going outGerry

I bought this guitar so that I would have one at our cabin in Colorado (the mountains are so much better with a guitar) and I could avoid the ""how did my guitar make the flight"" worries. I figured that at the price I couldn't lose no matter what. What I didn't figure on was the great tone and feel of this instrument. If you are looking for a first guitar or one to leave somewhere so that you have it in hand for occasional use then this is your best deal. A number of other reviewers have said that the strings would not stay in tune, and for the first short while I thought they were right then I saw that the only problem was a bit of slack in the tailpiece end of the strings. Once I got that straightened out all was great! Bear in mind that this is an inexpensive guitar so it will likely have some minor cosmetic issues, but it plays like a dream. If you are looking for a guitar to see if you or someone else is really interested in playing or you want a guitar to leave somewhere to play occasionally then this is a great guitar!Michael
This guitar is AWESOME. Very little room for improvement, the details were slightly different than the pictures, but in my opinion better than advertised. Those commenting about tuning not holding, are probably not familiar with nylon strings. I play exclusively with nylon strings (which is what came pre strung on this guitar) and the first few days to a week, it WILL fall out of tune QUICKLY. That is the nature of nylon, no way around it, but they are much easier on your fingertips and have a softer tone than steel strings, so I guess it depends on your style. I am a music teacher in a public school. Our school owned 11 of these Lyon guitars. My best instrument is guitar and I have a degree in guitar. Besides teaching in schools, I've privately taught lessons for 20 years on guitar and have played professionally. I say all this information to quantify this statement: these are the absolute worst put together instruments I have ever seen. As a beginner looking for my first acoustic guitar I didn’t want to spend a lot of money. I read the reviews on the AB1 and they were all positive so for $109 with free delivery, 3 years warranty and 100 days return I didn’t think I could go wrong. I was right. I purchased and Artist AB1 41inch acoustic for my son's 13th birthday. At this price I was not expecting much quality wise, but more something my son could cut his teeth on. The delivery arrived early within 3 days and I opened the package first to see what I'd actually received. My first thoughts were this is a good looking guitar. I grabbed a pick and had a play myself before wrapping the present. Wow what a surprisingly rich tone and nice low action. I am very impressed at the build quality and sound of this guitar. I bought the Artist AB1 guitar as a muck around sort of acoustic to play on, I primarily play electric. First thing I noticed when I started playing the guitar was how good the action felt, expected for a beginner level guitar but unexpected on something of this price point. The sound was also noticeably good for a budget guitar, perhaps not outstanding but not as bad as similarly priced guitars. I enjoyed playing this guitar for about 5 months before the guitar slipped slightly from a low height and the head of the guitar bumped the coffee table holding it up. To my own surprise, the head had actually been completed detached from the neck. The guitar was in two. This was greatly upsetting given how highly I regarded this guitar. As a result, I contacted Artist to which they promptly responded and offered to replace it. The customer service was fantastic and I could not have been happier to still be able to play one of these guitars. Had it not been replaced, I would have probably bought another one anyway given the value for money for this guitar. I cannot speak more highly about how great the service was and how fantastic the product is. I would definitely recommend the Artist AB1 to beginner or budget guitarist and even those looking for something to muck around with.Arun

Although the style and look of the guitar is amazing, along with all of the accessories, the biggest issue is the making of the guitar. The strings placement above the neck and along the guitar is too high up. It needs to sit parallel to the whole neck. It rises higher near the body and slowly lowers along the neck. Not a big issue if you know how to play the guitar, but for a beginner and for quality sound, the strings need to be hovering directly parallel along the whole guitar.Helaman H.
My granddaughter is 7yrs old. I wanted to do something different for Christmas this year, so I purchased a acoustic guitar. I’m thinking 30inches will be a nice size for her. When I received it the box was small and without taking it out the box I knew it wasn’t the size I thought it was going to be! Not sure why there are so many 5 star reviews on this product, because it is not a good guitar. I bought it for my daughter to learn on and it will not stay in tune no matter what you do. I even tried changing the strings on it and it just refuses to stay in tune. I guess if you're just looking to get your kid used to holding a guitar and pressing the strings it is ok for that, but I would recommend spending a little more money on something decent that your kid can learn on. I am a guitar player and I have the full sized guitar from BCP and it is an excellent value for what you get, but this one just falls flat. No pun intended. 🙂Andrew

Works great at outdoor gigs when humidity or sweat cause finger and hand to neck drag. Surprisingly, does not cause your fingers to slip off the string while doing bends. The only complaint I have, be it small is, once you take the cap off the first time it never stays put when you place it back on can. That can cause a problem if stored in a "gig bag". I've resorted to placing a piece of duct tape on the cap to can. Although that may be "nit picky" drives me nuts!Sharkey

This review in which I have observed and feel may not be persuaded to others, but this is not my intention in doing at all. So I want to clarify that it is an ok use for but for some critique reasons. First off, I am still a fan of this product to this day, and yes I have use this quite often. BUT, there are some few things you have to be aware of when you buy this. Most of the times when I change strings it's because they feel stiff and I have no I idea why they keep feeling stiff most of the time, until I come to realize it's the finger ease that's being in use. Here is my tip on buying a product. "ALWAYS READ WHAT'S ON THE BACK!" and yes, I have to learn this the hard way. The 1st line of the 1st paragraph is the crucial evident you have to think about, in which the part is read, "Reduces finger tenderness-stops string talk…" To me, that would mean that it will stiffen the strings to the point where there will be little or no string talk, in which case, you'll be sacrificing string bending. Many songs that are played are highly used for bending strings and such, but if you don't do strings bending at all, you wouldn't care much at all then. Also, this takes away you callous from your fingers! "…residue transfers from strings to fingers and conditions callouses, keeping soft and smooth without snags." I don't know if I am interpreting correctly, but YOU NEED TO HAVE HARD CALLOUSED FINGERS TO PLAY GUITAR OR ANY OTHER STRING INSTRUMENT! I think that this is good for nylon strings but not steel strings at all… I replaced my old elixirs nanoweb .009 over dunlop .009 and it was very good at first when I played to stretch out the strings, but after when I applied the finger ease to the strings, it just started to sound and feel really different. Now, many of you who may read this read this review will not agree with me maybe because most of you have better experience with the this more than me; But this is my experience with the product which is the reason why I'm giving this a 3 stars. It is not a good product, but it is not bad either. For now, this product will be my last can when I finish it. Until the manufacturer improves this product, I will buy it once again. By the way, the guitar that I put my strings on is a Charvel DST-FR1 which is similar to the LTD/ESP Gus-g Random star.
