Excellent sound, finish, and feel. Perfect– from young students to experienced guitarists — sized right for smaller hands. Even the neck is slightly downsized at 1.88 inches, as opposed to a more standard 2 inch nut width. Enhanced by Savarez 500 CJ high tension strings, this instrument rings out very well, especially for a 3/4 sized guitar. When you order your Protege C1 (or C1M) it might be a good idea to order a set of replacement strings at the same time. I did. Don't be fooled by the 3/4 designation. Actually, the 24.2 inch scale length is not that far off of many full scale instruments. My Fender dreadnought has a 25.3 inch scale length. These high tension strings on this short scale guitar feel very similar to normal (medium) tension strings on a full scale guitar. I installed my under-the-strings pickup so I can plug into an amp in larger rooms. Sounds great!

The guitar looks Wonderfull and plays pretty well for a budget plug in. And plugged in the should is even better, the tuner seems accurate – very happy considering the price – perfect for a starter plug in.

Overall: It is a pleasure and privilege to own the Cordoba C-10 cedar classical guitar because it has the most beautiful balance across the strings. Clearly, this depends on your playing style, and the strings you choose to use. On this instrument i use "rectified-lightly polished bass" strings. While they may not last as long as unpolished strings, the sound they produce is well worth the extra expense and restringing. I can best describe the sounds from this guitar/string combination as lyrical, poetic, and warmly human. No string requires compensation while playing, not even the intrusive G, as this is not clear nylon, but has a mixture of another compound to help "tame" this unruly member.The frets are nearly perfect, with only one area near the sound hole on the low E and A, that is rarely played by anybody, though I will have it remedied eventually. The neck is straight, fingerboard true ebony, and the saddle was perfect out of the box at 2.5 mm and 3. mm clearance at the 12th fret on the 1st and 6th strings. At this low string height, I do have to be sure that strings are constantly tuned up to avoid any buzzing, but that is a small price to pay for such fine and easy play ability.It is so gratifying to find a product that meets its billing, and the stated philosophy of Cordoba's CEO to "bring fine guitars within everybody's reach." That is absolutely true of this guitar, as the first entry into a true classical guitar it proves to be worthy of far more than its cost.Kudos must be extended to zZounds as well for their "pay and play" plan which makes such a great instrument available to mere mortals. Now that I've played this guitar, the cost has become irrelevant.Finally, the most ineffable feature of this guitar only becomes apparent when you play, especially during soft passages, as you pay attention to the celestial aroma of cedar wafting through your consciousness. I do like the sound of spruce-top guitars, but find that most are stuck in "bright to brighter" tones, and they cannot come down to a warm fireplace beside a beautiful guitar played for a beloved wife. I'm very happy with my new guitar, I bought this after play many models for more than 2 hours in the local store in Orlando. The Cordoba was my selection because this have a sweet sound, is very soft to play acords that require a large elongation, is very comfortable, is a "Impeccable" guitar. Really I recommend this guitar for enthusiast players!

Overall: I have to say I am very happy with my guitar. It is great unplugged, and even better going through a PA. I play a lot of classical, but also James Taylor, Paul Simon, etc. and the guitar works perfectly for that style as well. I am also very impressed by the customer service at zZounds. I had a problem with the first guitar I purchased and without hesitation they found a solution for me. Overall very satisfied with everything, the guitar is beautiful. I played many others in looking and this one stood out right away, strong sound, easy to play. Highly recommend.

Sound: The sound is good. I wouldn't put it in it's own category but definitely on par with other guitars in the same price range. Features: The most useful feature is the truss rod. This is very uncommon in traditional classic nylon string guitars and will prove very useful. Ease of Use: The main key to getting great sounds from any instrument is the player. However, I would recommend changing the stock strings to some EJ45 Pro-Arte's from D'addario. They have a warmer tone. Quality: As long as you keep it in the supplied gig bag and make sure to check the humidity often, I see no reason why this guitar wouldn't last decades. Value: Absolutely worth the price. For $500, you'd be hard pressed to find another nylon string that has the same level of craftsmanship. Some may argue that you can't get a good nylon string for under $1000 but for those of us on a budget, you can't go wrong with this. Manufacturer Support: Fortunately, I haven't had any reason to contact Cordoba. The Wow Factor: The price, the truss rod, the finish, $500 = Wow. Overall: I must say this is a fantastic guitar for the price. I felt as if I was playing a $800+ instrument. The quality is really on par with other popular brands that also sell nylon string guitars in the same price range. The finish is beautiful, a nice reddish/natural color. I read some complaints about the guitar being a bit too heavy but I disagree. It couldn't be any more light in my hands and fits perfectly in my lap. The neck is smooth and fast, fret edges are trimmed and tuning pegs feel like they have a good weight to them. A top quality guitar for under $500. Thanks Cordoba!

Bridge pickup: fat and loud. This produces a very noisy rock/metal sound that fits perfectly for bands such as Rage Against The Machine and Black Sabbath. No hiss and very useable. Middle pickup: Clear. Essentially the acoustic sounding pickup. Very very effective for chordal work. Sounds great for acoustic work such as certain Babyshambles, Libertines, Oasis and the like. Does get a hiss occasionally, but not too huge. Probably isn't aided by my old amp. Neck pickup: bright. Extremely sweet sounding pickup for solo work beyond the 12th fret. It does sound a little muddy playing 1-5th frets on occasion, but the tone and sound at the other end of the neck is beautiful. Sounds fantastic playing Hendrix, Kravitz and solo's from Strokes etc. Have also used it to good effect on some Clapton tracks. There is the option to mix pickups (such as half neck humbucker, half single pickup) but I generally find these too weak and in-distinctive to be used effectively.

the part where subjectivity kicks in (have you noticed how "objective" this review was from the get-go? ). The styles of music I play, as I mentioned earlier, are mostly the Metal subgenres, with an occasional pull of a bluesish pentatonic. To me, this guitar fills every need I might have concerning any and all "heavy" music. It simply molds itself to any need I might have, and fills it in style. Sure, I DO have that Peavey Raptor as well, using it as a practice guitar, but the GRG will remain foremost. If I had had a question to ask before I'd bought it, then that question would irreversibly be: "Does it come as a "2 for 1" special?"… and if it were – forbidden be the thought – lost; or worse – stolen, then I'd definitely get another one. Simply put, this is my guitar. What I love most about it is it's demeanor. I compared it to the Raptor: whilst the latter is an extremely comfortable guitar, quite literally screaming "play me!" (I don't speak "guitar", though, sadly), the Ibanez stands firm, proud and distinguished, with a superior look on it's face; It took me a while before I could subdue and befriend it, unlike the Peavey's "I go with anyone" attitude. Yet that's what the beauty of taming is all about. What do I hate about it? Possibly everything, possibly nothing. But the thing that ticks my nerves, still, is the aforementioned buzzing frets (though, I reiterate, that is not a fault of the builder). And, lastly, my favourite feature of the guitar is, as you might not have guessed, the neck. 24 medium frets of sizzling speed, Ultra-fast picking and high screams, on a fast and responsive neck. That is, ultimately, what the GRG 170 is all about. Versatility and adaptability, all with an affordable price tag.
