I got this neck to replace the one I had on my Squier FSR Bullet Telecaster (in Metallic Purple with Maple Fretboard). This telecaster has a Maple neck with a normal C shape and felt really unrefined for a "Fender" neck. I decided to get this Fender Telecaster Standard Replacement Neck with a Modern C shape neck. This new actual Fender neck was a drastic change in quality and performance. Here's just a quick Pros and Con of this product. PROS: Real Fender Product – Because this is an official Fender product, the neck replacement on my Squier was seamless and very simple. Modern C – Makes a better feeling guitar when playing compared to the normal C shape neck. Satin Neck Finish on back – The neck is very smooth feeling when playing. The finish on the back of the neck doesn't get in the way of you playing fast. This helps if you have sweaty hands when playing. Gloss fretboard – This makes a difference because if doesn't feel like your fingers are sticking to the fretboard. Medium Jumbo Frets – Just feels nice when moving around the fretboard. Bending strings feel nicer than my old Squier frets. Pre Drilled Holes for Tuners – I already had Fender locking tuners. So it was a simple swap with no mods needed. CONS: Nut not slotted – I don't understand why the NUT isn't slotted at least for common string size. It is very slightly to get you started but you would need a file. I just used the low E strong and used it like a file but it didn't come out too well and I've had to buy a new nut that comes preslotted. No predrilled String tree hold – This really wasn't too much of a problem but it's scary if you get it wrong. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase after two weeks of everyday playing with it. This was a much needed upgrade from my Squier telecaster neck I had.C. Barona
this is my 4th roasted neck and I can't recommend them enough. especially if you live on or near the water. I can pull out my strat or tele after not playing them for a few days and they are right in tune look at the quality that is put into them and you'd agree. when screwed to a sunburst or pastel colored body they just really enhance the look of your instrument. the cost of the roasted neck is something you gotta think about like do you really want to spend that kinda Ching on a neck? hell you can buy a standard neck for less or even buy an after market neck and play the same its all about the stability of the wood that closed the deal for me. dig down deep in yer pocket and pony up the Ching for one of these I'm pretty sure you be pleased you did. I have them mounted to Mexican fenders and American fenders all have mated up perfect and very little fret work was needed this is my experience with these necks and you will find the same. in short I dig mine and will in the future will only use these beautiesho-joe56
perfect fitment into a MIM fender body. finish was flawless and the dark maple is beautiful. mistake made on my part, not fender….. the roasted maple has so much less give than standard maple. I should have thought about that with all of the moisture being removed from the wood. I used fender press fit tuner bushings and installed them with a C-clamp as I always have. I heard the headstock crack as I was installing the D string bushing and my heart sank. Luckily, I was able to inject some wood glue and clamp it overnight to close it up, but I reamed out the G tuner bushing and learned my lesson. use care when installing the tuner bushings on anything roasted as the fibers in the wood simply will not compress the same way another neck would.Grey

This is a VERY solid 7 string. I've tried quite a few brands searching for the perfect intermediate 7 string, both active and passive electronics. So far, the best ones, by far, have been LTD and Schecter, with this one taking the cake (even over an $850 Ltd ec-407). First off, the guitar is beautiful, and the neck feels great. I usually don't like the super-strat body style, but this one has the top curves in all the right places. There is a bit of fret buzz when strummed hard on the low B, but that's to be expected and it's much more manageable than some of the others I tried. If it's a problem, I'd recommend a thicker gauge string set, I like ghs boomers in a heavy gauge (they eliminated fret buzz on a previously owned, less expensive LTD 7 string I owned) The pickups sound incredible, honestly. There are models of this same guitar with Duncan Designed pickups, and that model is slightly more expensive, but I assure you that you're not missing out if you get this one with Schecter Diamond active pickups instead. In fact… I think these sounded better in some applications! Fantastic gain, clarity, and definition, and perfect for metal, they will make your riffs sound brutal… they sound good clean too though! Overall the best bang for your buck 7 string I've tried yet. I've personally owned 5 different ones, but this and the now-discontinued Jackson slathx-m 3-7, which come stock with Seymour Duncan Sentient and Nazgul passive pickups, take the cake for the best I've played.Brian F
I was honestly quite skeptical about the idea of an eight string. A few of my buddies and I decided that, based on the type of music that we wanted to play, an eight string was the right answer. Not wanting to spend a ton on an eight string if I didn't like it, I found this model at a decent price. Needless to say, I was blown away by this guitar. Everything about it is above what I would expect for a guitar of this price point. The neck is very fast with a smooth finish, the action was set up just right, the intonation is spot on, and the correct gauge strings for the tuning we are in were already installed. I was also worried about the neck being much thicker than I would have liked, but Schecter did a phenomenal job with his neck. Another concern that I had was the electronics. In my experience, a guitar that has stock branded pickups has never really been that great. These pickups more than do the job. Eventually I can see switching them out for Fishman Fluence, but they will certainly do for now.Derek
This guitar hits a real sweet spot! If you're looking to get into a seven string on a budget, but want to guarantee you're getting a trustworthy guitar, this is the one! The quality is unbelievably good for the price. For an entry level purchase, you're getting some of the best components that Schecter has to offer; borrowing its design and some features from the iconic Hellraiser series. Side-by-side, the Omen is just as nice – almost indistinguishable in build quality and overall appearance. The guitar also came perfectly set up and ready to play from Sweetwater. Nice low action, fast neck, responsive and strong sounding pickups. I bought this guitar because I was a little hesitant to try some of the cheaper options like Harley-Benton and cheap Jacksons. I do not regret this decision one bit! The Schecter is much classier looking, has a great feel to it, and will likely last a very long time with minimal maintenance. My only real complaint with the guitar is that Schecter switched to a more swirly-patterned quilted maple finish on their newer models and I was hoping for more of the woodgrain / tiger stripe appearance that the older ones seemed to have. It's not a dealbreaker though, the finish still looks great in person! Overall I am extremely pleased. Playing 7-string is so much fun and this was the best way to get involved without risking a huge investment.

Bridge pickup: fat and loud. This produces a very noisy rock/metal sound that fits perfectly for bands such as Rage Against The Machine and Black Sabbath. No hiss and very useable. Middle pickup: Clear. Essentially the acoustic sounding pickup. Very very effective for chordal work. Sounds great for acoustic work such as certain Babyshambles, Libertines, Oasis and the like. Does get a hiss occasionally, but not too huge. Probably isn't aided by my old amp. Neck pickup: bright. Extremely sweet sounding pickup for solo work beyond the 12th fret. It does sound a little muddy playing 1-5th frets on occasion, but the tone and sound at the other end of the neck is beautiful. Sounds fantastic playing Hendrix, Kravitz and solo's from Strokes etc. Have also used it to good effect on some Clapton tracks. There is the option to mix pickups (such as half neck humbucker, half single pickup) but I generally find these too weak and in-distinctive to be used effectively.
the part where subjectivity kicks in (have you noticed how "objective" this review was from the get-go? ). The styles of music I play, as I mentioned earlier, are mostly the Metal subgenres, with an occasional pull of a bluesish pentatonic. To me, this guitar fills every need I might have concerning any and all "heavy" music. It simply molds itself to any need I might have, and fills it in style. Sure, I DO have that Peavey Raptor as well, using it as a practice guitar, but the GRG will remain foremost. If I had had a question to ask before I'd bought it, then that question would irreversibly be: "Does it come as a "2 for 1" special?"… and if it were – forbidden be the thought – lost; or worse – stolen, then I'd definitely get another one. Simply put, this is my guitar. What I love most about it is it's demeanor. I compared it to the Raptor: whilst the latter is an extremely comfortable guitar, quite literally screaming "play me!" (I don't speak "guitar", though, sadly), the Ibanez stands firm, proud and distinguished, with a superior look on it's face; It took me a while before I could subdue and befriend it, unlike the Peavey's "I go with anyone" attitude. Yet that's what the beauty of taming is all about. What do I hate about it? Possibly everything, possibly nothing. But the thing that ticks my nerves, still, is the aforementioned buzzing frets (though, I reiterate, that is not a fault of the builder). And, lastly, my favourite feature of the guitar is, as you might not have guessed, the neck. 24 medium frets of sizzling speed, Ultra-fast picking and high screams, on a fast and responsive neck. That is, ultimately, what the GRG 170 is all about. Versatility and adaptability, all with an affordable price tag.
Getting used to the extra 2 strings, which is a little awkward. And the fanned frets is something new too. It's kind of like learning the basics of swimming, then decide to try the diving board. LOL. I'm cool with that, as it saves me from buying a bunch of guitars along the way to be comfortable with this concept. Im a player that has longer fingers and the fat neck cut down on player fatigue. Bought a rosewood a few weeks ago and came back to buy a maple neck with the nitro finish. They are beautiful necks and Im more than happy with my two Tele builds. Keep in mind that you will have to remove the nitro finish from the frets for it is standard practice to apply the finish to the entire neck. There are a few YouTube videos out there on how to properly do this. I personally taped up my fretboard and used a fine sandpaper to remove the finish from the frets. Also pay attention to the hole size in the headstock for your tuners. You may have to enlarge the holes provided and add those little pilot holes to stabilize your tuners. Just TAKE YOUR TIME with your build or replacement neck and you should be as satisfied as I am.smitus_s3lzwcnku

Sound: Sounds great. It does get a little muddy sounding on the lower strings but for the price I'm okay with that. Ease of Use: I play this through an orange tiny terror running an ibanez tube screamer and compressor pedal (I think it's an mxr, nothing fancy). The neck was pretty easy to get use to it granted i do have bigger hands. Quality: Only had it a short time but it seems pretty well built. Arrived in perfect condition and was packaged securely. Value: Well worth the price Manufacturer Support: Have yet had to interact with them The Wow Factor: Pretty much got this on a whim due to the ibanez r8 constantly being backordered. I looked around for a while to try to find an 8-string that wasn't bigger than me. When I finally found Schecter's offering, I was elated that it not only had a normal (not baritone) guitar scale, but it was also availible in another color besides black or white. I got the walnut satin finish. When it came in, it was more beautiful then the pictures showed it to be. I plugged it in and discovered how narrow the neck was considering the eight strings. Granted, the strings are a little closer to each other than many guitars, but it suits my plating style very well. By the way, the two "extra" strings are B and F# below the low E. The girl can growl like a a cougar if you want her to. What a voice range and tone range this baby has, and for the price, the workmanship is truly outstanding. Mine came to me flawless and already set up for playing. I didn't need to adjust the action at all. I tuned her up and started making beautiful music. For someone who wants to try out an 8-string guitar without going broke, this guitar is a good investment.
This guitar is awesome. I got the walnut satin version and it is very nice. It's way less red than the pictures show; I'd recommend googling the guitar to see real pics of it. There were no problems with it upon arrival. The setup was almost perfect too. The neck is very thin and easy to play on. However, being my first 8 string (and first Schecter), the width of the neck and the closeness of the strings has taken some getting used to, even after a month or so. Very hard to reach the last couple of fret, but going all the way up there isn't entirely necessary for everyone. The inlays are cooler than expected. They probably aren't pearl, but look like it. Hardware wise, the controls work just fine. The tuners are better than I expected based on other stock tuners I've worked with from other brands. The pickups are fine i think, but I don't have any other 8 string pickups to compare them too either. Overall great deal. The walnut satin finish on an 8 string really made the deal for me, but I was impressed with the overall quality for an entry-level-priced 8 string. I had read many forums looking for the best low cost 8 string and almost everywhere there were a few people mentioning the omen 8. If you wanting a high output pickup, these are not your choice. I’ve had blackouts and emgs and those would be better a better choice. If you want more Note clarity and pick response and a WIDE VARIETY of tones, this is your guy. The neck pick up- super clean with the right amount of output, and with the push pull options, you can get a glassy strat shimmer. With the tone knob dialed back and using voicing two, you get a super dark and top and mid heavy that Keith is known for. The bridge pickup- it chugs with heavy distortion and get super note definition when tuned down. Pull in the knobs and you can get Slash from a half powered PAF. I have got e erything from David Gilmour to Korn to some Pantera rhythm tones. You will not get a high end “sizzle” aka Dime leads but still sounds greatDennis
Been playing and gigging for 30 years. Owned lots of guitars and bought lots of after market pickups. These pickups are shockingly good. They do exactly what they say they'll do. They have the punch, cut thru, and clarity of actives but they react to your fingers like passives. Very rewarding playing experience. They sound and feel like low output PAF style pickups. Long cable runs are not an issue. I'm shocked by how good they sound. Definitely worth checking out.Chuck

I have a Line Six Variax and had a problem with the high E string sliding off the edge. After some research I found this to be a common issue and tried all the recommended fixes with no success. I love the things the guitar can do and love the magnetic pickups as well. I decided to get a new neck and didn't want to pay the price fender charges so after reading some reviews I decided on this one. The neck came well packaged. I checked all the frets and there were zero raised frets and the edges were perfect as well. I aligned it and drilled the holes required as the neck comes without being drilled which is a plus as the Variax holes are not the same as a strat. Once assembled I installed locking tuners, adjusted the truss rod as the neck is perfectly straight out of the box, adjusted string height and intonation. The real test was how will it play???? Needless to say I was more than impressed and couldn't be more satisfied. Bottom line is there's no reason to spend more on a neck with a fender decal on it. I have bought and reviewed these necks before, this is just an updated review to say as of June 2015 the MM2902 is better than ever. The quality craftsmanship has increased, the fret ends are perfect and smooth, and the maple is nicely figured. Just a light sanding and fret polishing is the only prep they need besides finishing. As before, it's a true one-piece neck, no baloney cut in the neck and the fingerboard is not a separate piece of wood either, it's all one piece of maple. Straight as an arrow, it will last forever. Truss rod works the way it should, and smoothly. My only complaint is the oil finish, I wish they would sell these unfinished so we can stain them. I make it work anyway, tape off the frets, spray with Vintage Amber nitro, then clear coat. Wet sand and buff, they look great but it is a fair amount of work.Richard
This is my 5th Mighty Mite neck (various types) and like the rest of them it's great. Nicely figured maple, sanded out perfectly, ready for final finish. This is the classic small headstock, not the big one. The frets were ready to play out of the box, level and ends dressed smooth. Not all of my MM necks have been, they needed basic fret leveling, polishing, and end dressing. But for $105 and a little elbow grease you end up with a fine quality neck. The oil finish they put on looks good, but if you wish to stain the neck it's very difficult to sand out all the oil and the stain goes on unevenly. So, if you want that Vintage Amber look, you'll want to spray it on instead, and it goes on real nice. Plain clear nitro lacquer will look and play great too. The idea is to protect the fingerboard from carbon black from hard playing. The oil finish alone will not do that. So if this sounds like more that you want to tackle, the Fender brand replacement neck is what you want, it's all lacquered up and ready to play.Richard

It took a while because the neck was back-ordered for months (not Musician's Friend's fault), but no muss, no fuss and now I have another fretless bass. It fit perfectly into the body … you will have to drill holes for the screws in the heel of neck where it mounts. Go to YouTube and search for "Dave's World of Fun Stuff – mounting a fretless neck." He uses this neck and will show you how to mount it. He used a Squier bass and I used a MiM body. I'd put the link in, but I fear that may be against the rules. The holes in the headstock for the bushing are 80mm, and the Hipshot HB7 tuner fit it perfectly. You can use a rat tail file, if need be, to slightly enlarge the holes for your original tuning machines if you're using them. Once mounted, I used my nut files and brought the strings to .015" above the fretboard. Get one … I've been playing fretless for over 20 years and its different and FUN!Garvoon
Neck bent under string tension. Mighty-mite warranty does not cover necks that have been installed. Waited too long hoping for response from MM before tried returning and ended up too late for returns. I swapped this in for a homemade P-bass. It feels and sounds great. Ebonal is a legit substitute for ebony. Combined with tapewound strings the feel is very slick, and the tone and sustain are both excellent. It isn't the most stable of necks; I have to adjust the truss rod twice a week to keep it straight. Also, the nut is way way too high for good intonation in positions I-III. The best thing to do is remove it (look online for how-to. It's not difficult, just takes a well-placed strike and some nerve) and file the base down with sandpaper on a block. Glue it back in (with Elmer's, so you can remove it again in the future) and let the strings clamp it in place. I lowered mine so the strings are now .030" from the fingerboard. A lot of people go even lower than that. TL;DR: great value for the price. With patience and care, you'll wind up with a very playable fretless bass.the round mound of sound

I purchased long time ago the birds maple eye and was much better quality, this it's just good to learn to do whatever you want. If you get this one, you have to expect to work on it and invest time to get a very GOOD neck. Another important thing to consider is the fact I got a mighty mite ash tele body and doesn't fit well… lol really? Same brand and there is a little gap on the neck pocket… So, be prepare. I like the fact that it's a good piece of neck to work and learn with no stress about the price you paid for it . I just sanded, stained, oil, and I did all the fret job of course and I'm more than happy looks and plays awesome because I customize it for my playing… If you want to receive a neck just to swap it and ready to go, this it's not your right option.Gilberto L
Great fit, back of neck is silky smooth. Ended up really liking the vintage v profile. My only qualm was having to file down the fret ends on all frets as they were rough. That being said for the quality and the price, the 30-60 minutes of work I was totally fine with it. I was doing a partscaster build so it didnt bother me to work it up. I bought this for use on a project guitar that started life as a Starcaster. The maple neck appears to be of high quality wood with no ugly knots. The finish is very smooth and fast playing but is definitely thin and has the potential to wear down quickly. The ebony fretboard is the best part; it's a very consistent dark brown and extremely dense, smooth, and hard as a rock. The frets are jumbo and polished nicely but the ends are sharp and require some attention. The truss rod required tightening but works fine. The pre-drilled tuner holes fit American standard tuning machines fine. Overall it's a good value, the price is a big part of my 4 star rating; if this product cost as much as most replacement necks it would be a 2 or 3. I've had at least 4 necks from CEG. Great service and response. I would class these necks with the $600 Warmoth necks. In making my custom guitars, I have tried quite a few vendors, and have had to re-level, smooth fret ends, and refinish–not with these–these necks are ready to roll. I bought this neck for a Cabronita-style partscaster. I am very happy with both the birdseye appearance and the satin finish, but the frets did need to be leveled, crowned, and polished. It was a fine fit for an XGP body — no gaps at the pocket, pleasantly snug — and it drilled easily, but it was not "plug and play." Once I leveled the frets (I also chose to swap the plastic nut out and installed a cheap bone nut instead), I wound up with a very comfortable and attractive neck on a guitar that makes me happy. I had this same experience with two MM maple necks — great value, great fit, great feel, but the frets did need a full level & crown in both cases, so take that into account. You're saving money compared to other brands, but you will either need to invest in that extra leveling step or do it yourself.Dan
