These strings have a beautiful fullness, but they have a bright "edge" that gives them superb definition. They have enough roundwound brightness but with great warmth. The lower and middle mid range response is extremely strong. Due to a hand injury, I only tap and pull off with my fretting hand so the smooth flatwound is kind of a necessity. I use these on both a Fender Precision and an Ibanez AEB-10 acoustic bass guitar. Very smooth, even response, great playability and clear, round tone. The Ibanez is a totally new instrument with "electric" flats on it vs the stock phosphor bronze strings (which to me make them all sound too "twangy". I play jazz, soul, R&B, pop, funk, Latin and a bunch of other styles and own several basses, using roundwounds on most. But for that old school tone, I love flats (and get compliments every time I play out or record with them) After 40+ years of professional playing I am reverting back to my roots with D'Addario strings, and these Chromes are great strings and a great value. My Mitchell MS450 (single cutaway LP style guitar) came with D'Add's, which sounded decent. When I switched them out, I went with the GHS 10's on a hunch based on things I've heard. Great move! I used 11's from D'Addario for years and I would break a string consistently for every show that I played. I do not know why I kept with D'Addario for so long. I figured I needed to have a heavier string gauge for durability and better tone. Searched around and came across these strings in the heavy gauge, and I could not be happier with them. These strings have great sustain, are durable, do not corrode as quickly as other brands I have used in my professional career playing music, and, despite their heaviness, are easy to play in standard tuning. Along with playing well with a pick and fingers, these strings also sound terrific when playing slide. You can get the same great tones out of these strings that Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have with their lighter gauges, as well as channeling the fat tones that you hear from Duane Allman from the Fillmore East show. Great Garcia tones can come from these strings as well. Basically what I am saying is that you can still get those classic guitar sounds on these heavy strings without feeling like your losing tone or playing opportunities utilized by the players that inspire you who may use lighter string gauges. These strings also (as far as I know) have a round core instead of a hex core. I think that might be a reason why these strings have so much sustain, especially when you have some distortion or overdrive keeping them warm while playing lead. If you are on the fence about getting these, I recommend you give them a try just see how they work for you. They are no that expensive and its worth it to figure out what works for you as a player. Feeling confidence in the gear you use is so essential to being comfortable on stage. Buy a pack and see what happens. You might find yourself just what you've been looking for.JFromJUNCO
I used to use Boomers for about 10 years, on all my electrics (9s). Until arthritis started creeping in. Switched to EB slinky 8s, and playing became much easier. Everything still had a huge sound, but previous order added a test set of the Boomer 8.5s for my Gibson Les Paul goldtop with P90s. Took a while to get used to the rougher feel compared with the EB 8s. But will probably order another set for the goldtop, and a set for my ES295.Joe S.

These are installed on a Gretsch short scale. They have a great smooth feel, tension with balanced volume and warm sound. They don't rattle with loose tension like most shortscale strings. I'm just sorry I didn't try the Rotosound Trubass decades ago. I finally ordered them from Strings and Beyond and l will be ordering more for my other basses. As far as Rotosounds claim to emulate an upright l will say they give you a rich warm sound usable in a lot of musical styles. When installing these strings you may have to widen the nut slots so the strings will not bind and allow them to sit correctly. Very, very comfortable strings to play. I have only had these strings on for about a week, so I cannot attest to their longevity. However, right out of the package, they have had an excellent upright like tone that is perfect for the types of roots music I like to play. I like to play with a slightly high action and these strings seem to be made for that. I have not experienced any of the hum sometimes associated with tapewound strings. My pickups are kind of bright, and these strings helped balance my tone with their darkness. Overall, I am very satisfied and would recommend them to anyone who likes to play country/blues/americana type music.Kris
This is my second set of Monel flats, but my first encounter with their short-scale set. I put them on my EB-0. As others have mentioned (and maybe this doesn't apply to your bass), the silk wrapping at the knob end extends over the place the string touches the bridge. It requires scraping part of the silk away so you can get a metal-touching metal. Again, this may not matter to you; the EB-0, however, produces a mellow tone already and anything that softens that tone (like the wrapping) makes it more difficult to tease even a little crunch out of the instrument. Not a big deal, but an unnecessary step for me to have to do this when it would be a simple matter to use less silk at the factory and give us ready to use strings out of the bag. Other than that, I like Monel strings — they are strong and reliable — and would buy them again to put on a standard scale bass.Offhis Rocker

Trying out bass strings in search of that "perfect sound" is an expensive proposition. If you play a 34" scale five string you need search no more. As a recording and performing bassist the GHS 5-5M-DYB 5-string Bass Strings with Low-B is my choice of string for my two pre-Gibson Tobias basses, as it would be for my 35" scale basses if they made this in a long scale version, which they don't – yet. While nickel plated strings are often used to reduce fret wear, they are a warmer sounding string, and these have just the right blend of punch, brightness and low-end warmth. Most important they emphasize that primary tone that helps the bass lay solidly in the track without an inordinate amount of gain. The band sounds better when the bass sounds best. I have bought most of the strings on the market over the years and along with tone monster Jimmy Johnson, these are my go-to strings! I would give them a "10" if they made a long scale string… if GHS is reading, please add this to your line up.

A colleague of mine turned me on to these, and in particular to this strange gauge of 9.5 – 44. I had struggled in the past with standard 9s on a guitar with high output pickups and a warble-happy whammy bar. I find these strings to handle really nicely, a perfect amount of slick and grip (finger contact) and they positively scream in my current configuration. I've put them on a guitar that I don't play live often, and I find that the strings don't deteriorate over time with the guitar being left in the case. This is very subjective and a question of personal chemistry. I mean, I've seen players go through a pack of the best "long-lasting" string on the market in one night, so it'll always come down to which material lends itself to your handling. I have been using these strings for about a year now, when I had to drop down to 8 gauge strings due to carpal tunnel in my left hand. I wanted to go with a higher quality string since I would be using such a light gauge. The NYXL series does not disappoint. They are extremely flexible, stay in tune, last a really long time and they sound incredible. I had concerns that I would be sacrificing tone, but this has not been the case. This is the first time I tried these D'Addario NYXL strings. I got the nickel wound electric strings, regular light. I think these strings are one of the best I've used. I started playing guitar when I was very young so I've been playing for a lot of years. These nickel wound electric guitar strings are easy to play. The strings are nice on the fingers. Some strings make my finger tips get tuff, but tuff to the point that it affects the preasure I use on the strings. These nickel wound strings don't do that. I have had them on for some time now and none of them broke. I like the tone of the strings. It made tuning the guitar very easy after I strung it. There is something to say about having strings that are easy to string, tune, and have a great tone. If you are playing out some where and a string breaks you need to work kind of fast to get up and playing again. These strings do the trick.penny

Nice, lightweight strings with a good feel and excellent durability. The Slinky series give a great bright sound to the player, which is great for overall sound of the instrument. This lighter gauge I recommend for some of my beginner and/or younger students, especially while developing grip and finger strength. Postage from Artist was of course, super fast. Service is generally excellent, and while I have had some issues with their own brand products in the past, they've always played straight and fairly.

I turned to Stringjoy because I wanted a 9-72 8-string set, for which there aren't many options ot there, unless you go for a custom set. I was tempted by the stellar reviews, so I decided to give these a go. Firstly, these are the clearest sounding strings I've ever tried. They're not excessively bright, but their articulation is amazing, which really helps that low F# string ring true. They are almost clear to a fault, because they emphasise every little bit of fret buzz and string rattle, so you have to watch your technique. Secondly, these are the longest lasting uncoated strings I've ever used. After a month of use, they have shown minimal aging. I don't play my 8-string every day, but still, this is impressive. Also, they don't rust, flake or turn black. They just gradually become duller, while still remaining playable. One bit of criticism I have is the tuning stability. These strings seem to need a certain amount of tension to stay in tune. They were fine on my 27" scale 8-string, but when I tried the equivalent set on my 25.5" scale 7-string, bending made them go out of tune very easily. I need to try the 10-60 set and see if it's any better. Overall, I'm very happy with this set for my 8-string, and I have already purchased more. Oh, and one more thing! Normally, whenever I use gauge 72 or higher, I have to partially unwrap the winding to fit the string into its tuning peg. With this set, the lowest string was somehow able to go in as it is. My Mitchell MS450 (single cutaway LP style guitar) came with D'Add's, which sounded decent. When I switched them out, I went with the GHS 10's on a hunch based on things I've heard. Great move! Nice, brilliant tone, rings out for eternity if you let them! I have heard that the GHS 9's are really good on Strat style guitars, so GHS might be my go to on my Squier Strat Classic Vibe next string change.Joe
I used 11's from D'Addario for years and I would break a string consistently for every show that I played. I do not know why I kept with D'Addario for so long. I figured I needed to have a heavier string gauge for durability and better tone. Searched around and came across these strings in the heavy gauge, and I could not be happier with them. These strings have great sustain, are durable, do not corrode as quickly as other brands I have used in my professional career playing music, and, despite their heaviness, are easy to play in standard tuning. Along with playing well with a pick and fingers, these strings also sound terrific when playing slide. You can get the same great tones out of these strings that Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have with their lighter gauges, as well as channeling the fat tones that you hear from Duane Allman from the Fillmore East show. Great Garcia tones can come from these strings as well. Basically what I am saying is that you can still get those classic guitar sounds on these heavy strings without feeling like your losing tone or playing opportunities utilized by the players that inspire you who may use lighter string gauges. These strings also (as far as I know) have a round core instead of a hex core. I think that might be a reason why these strings have so much sustain, especially when you have some distortion or overdrive keeping them warm while playing lead. If you are on the fence about getting these, I recommend you give them a try just see how they work for you. They are no that expensive and its worth it to figure out what works for you as a player. Feeling confidence in the gear you use is so essential to being comfortable on stage. Buy a pack and see what happens. You might find yourself just what you've been looking for.JFromJUNCO
I used to use Boomers for about 10 years, on all my electrics (9s). Until arthritis started creeping in. Switched to EB slinky 8s, and playing became much easier. Everything still had a huge sound, but previous order added a test set of the Boomer 8.5s for my Gibson Les Paul goldtop with P90s. Took a while to get used to the rougher feel compared with the EB 8s. But will probably order another set for the goldtop, and a set for my ES295.Joe S.

Better than expected. Solid tone. Easy to play. Just right. Not too bright, just clean and tight, as a well made set should sound. Lows still great, even at the slightly lighter gauge. Don't get me wrong, they can get plenty bright if you want that. Just that they didn't seem as extra bright as some kinds try to be because they can with all the "super nano ultra special coated infused …but still hand crafted somehow" type stuff. Was never happy with previous sets on my 5 string. With these, I was able to set up with slightly lower action. This alone is worth it on my instrument. Finally, it's the bass it should've always been. Waited way too long to find these. I hope they keep making them. Probably going to order a few extra sets and try to keep a few on hand. As others point out, I'm not sure there's another set with these gauges for 5 strings. To me these are just right in a lot of ways.Person
Overall: Don't pay any attention to the low price these are great strings. Have used Fender 7250's on all kinds of bass guitars they always sound great and feel good. Years of use have proved quality. I put them on my Jazz bass, my PJ, and my Squire, have used them on Samick, Music man, OLP, and Epiphone basses, all good.Scott
Been using the 8250-5M set for awhile. Wanted to try a lighter gauge. I get more guitar tones out of these. I was concerned I might overpower them since I'd used medium gauge for a couple of years. These are literally perfect on my Modern Player Jazz Bass V and 2 1993 Jazz Plus Vs. I bought the Modern Player new from Musiciansfriend. I think this light set is the set that it had on it. I use a pick, single and double thumb as well as two finger picking techniques. The E and B strings give a nice low end. The A, D and G strings have a growl and bright tone and respond well to picking or plucking. I'll be using these strings for some timegeorgesguitars

I had Ernie Ball Cobalts on my '78 Fender P-bass for over a year. I've never had flat wounds on any of my bass guitars in my 35 years of playing so I wanted to try a set. The Balls were gauges 100 to 45 so I chose GHS set 3025 (95 to 45) to compensate for the increased tension of flats. But I liked the idea of still having a 45 G-string. The lighter gauge flats still had increased tension but only slightly. I've read about giving these strings a "break-in" period but they sounded really good right out of the package. So far I've had them on about a month and I'm very happy with them. They feel and sound amazing. Nice full low end across all 4 strings. These are keepers for my P-bass.Hutch
I put these on an acoustic-electric bass in an attempt to get a warmer tone that may be closer to tapewound strings with the durability of flats. I would describe the finish on these as satin. I'm sure that there are others on the market that are more polished, but these are comfortable and attractive strings. The silks on these extra-light gauge are purple. With flats, you have more tension than your average round wounds, that is the reason I went with a lighter gauge as to not put extra tension on the neck. The sound is very warm with the E string being not much more than a thump. They seem to be well made and I've only had them on for a week or two, but enjoying them.Matt
Started playing electric bass back when flats were all there was. At that time Fender flats were the best and were used on so many 1960's recordings. They just stood out in the mix. I started using round wounds in 1972, but I always said at some time I'd again have a spare bass with flats. In 2019 I got my spare, for nostalgia, and put Fenders on, but their magic was gone, nowhere near the sound of that 60's punch. When I tried the GHS', there it was and I'm grateful. I had high hopes for this set of flatwounds to put on my hollowbody 5 string bass. I was disappointed, however. The higher tension of this string really adds fatigue to your hand muscles. The worst part is that the LOW B string totally came apart when winding around the tuning post. The strings were put on my a great luthier/guitar tech in my area….so it was not a matter that they were put on incorrectly. I contacted DR and they immediately sent out a replacement B string….so high marks for their customer service. In the meantime, however, I needed a B string and put on a LaBella Low B flatwound that plays and sounds fine but has a different tonal character than the DR. Don't know whether to take a chance on removing the LaBella and put the DR to make a matching set.roadcat
Round wounds are great strings but I found it difficult to dial in that old Fender Jazz bass sound on my basses. Flat wounds did it with ease and without any felt or palm muting. I bought a set of LaBella Deep talking flat wounds and they sound good but still fell short when it came to slapping. Since I used DR Fat beams primarily I decided to try DR Legend Flats. Wow, I have found the sound in my head…finally. Slap, finger style, palm muting, you name it. It sounds really great. Now I use Legend flats on all of my basses, including my 5 string. I'm a long time big fan of DR. I like their infinite lasting strings which keep their tone years and years, However I have been using Ernie Ball 2806 Flat Wound Group III on my Precision 70 with 62' pickup since 2010. P 62' pickup has an edgy top end and round low. I was curious about the legend and decided to give them a shot. I like the gorgeous gold wrapping at the end of the string and it looks awesome on my Olympic white Precision. A, D and G string sounds quite clear and open, but the E string is totally dead. No texture at all. It has thick low end though, but rather you use your nail or a pick, it has a dead click, and that's it. Quite a contrast with the other strings actually. It's a kind of sound I have heard on many R&B albums and may be your thing, but I personally prefer the Ernie Ball 2806 for Classic rock, Funk, Blues etc. The Ernie Ball 2806 do not have that strong E, but all strings are consistent and clear and cranking the low end a bit adds fatness to all strings. DR Legends may please many players and may possibly work better on more modern instrument. If DR claim to improve this I will try them again. Meanwhile, I am going back to my beloved Ernie Ball 2806.Precision70

These strings lasted me a good 3 years throughout my college Jazz ensemble class. Never had the need to change them, they still retain its tone after 3 years!! and honestly Im okay with that cause over the years as they grow old the better it sounds than fresh out the pack. Although I do have to warn that these strings will feel a bit grabby once theyre set and if you have hairy arms/forearms enjoy the strings pulling your arm hairs. I purchased these as spares because the price was too good to pass up. I have these on an Ibanez with a stupidly thin neck. These super light gauge are the only flats that don't warp the neck and trash the fretting. The sound of the cobalts is also unique, from dark, smooth flat sound to bright, slappiness I didn't know you could get with flats. I hope they never stop making them.bdrums1

I once used D'Addarios for practice and gigs, then tried the Ernie Ball kind: these have a deeper bottom while having a comparable midrange presence. They're great for rock and roll gigs. The highs have a nice snap to them. Nickel strings are easier on the fingertips than stainless steel, plus the Slinkys last longer than Rotosounds. Tony Levin used this brand, so that was a good endorsement already.Robert

I bought these strings on a whim for an Ibinez SR405, and never regretted it. I get the full range of authoritative tone I get from any other strings (better than many, and much better than some). For the price of a set of strings, I get a set of strings and free stage presence. My best friend and guitar player, who despises flashy gimmicks, had to admit they sounded good. The only possible downside is that the brightness of the strings can make it difficult to see fret markers, so leave yourself some adjustment time between putting these strings on your bass, and doing any gigs with them. Oh, and the coating will come off, so just be careful when you are threading them through your bridge, and know to expect it if you use a metal pick.CJ
These strings perform perfectly for me at a half step down with a comfortable, not too lose, feel. The glowing is admittedly much better with a blacklight but they are super bright under normal stage lights too. As always they stay in tune incredibly well but Ive come to expect that from the folks at DR. I bought these for my Dean Z because I have used DR strings forever and thought i would be safe with the glowing jewels. Boy was I Right! The coating is super comfortable if just a little weird feeling at first. Initialy I felt that they would be slow feeling until I got em on and they proved just as fast and responsive as a non coated string. The best points about these strings is that they have a very crisp punchy tone without sounding dull at all, and underneath the coating lies a genuine handmade DR string! They warn that care must be taken when stringing through the bridge so as not to scrape off the coating, and while i did feel this was possible I had no problem running through the bridge on my bass which is similar to a standard P-bass bridge. I suppose that this would be most basses however my others have a different type of bridge where this is no issue at all. The only reason I dont give em a 10 is because the warning bothered me for about 5 minutes, which never happened with any other DR strings. These Neon strings are a super value because they give you a fantastic tone that is sure to last a long long time, and they friggin glow! normally I would expect something like this to be a gimmick but was surprised to find that they are really awesome strings with the bonus of looking killer on stage.
I have these orange strings on my 5-string metallic navy blue Ibanez Soundgear, and the contrast of the bright orange against the the dark blue is visually stunning. I've received a lot of compliments, questions, and "concerns" about the appearance of the strings. This is something different and flashy that you can do for your bass to add a bit of flare, and it will draw attention. I've heard everything from, "That looks so cool!" to, "What possessed you to do that?" 🙂 I like the appearance, the tone is good, and that is what matters. The strings work as advertised – black light reactive. I don't move around on stage that much, so these strings added stage presence to my performance because they glow under the black lights. Typical round wound string tone. Since the strings are coated, they will last longer than non-coated strings, so use these for practice, rehearsal, performance, jams, etc. I like the strings a lot, and I want to experiment with the different colors that are available.groovydaddy

These strings are okay for the price, but I've had several problems with them. 1) This is not a sealed pack, so when I bought it the .010 had rusty patches right out of the pack and maybe the .013 too. They're in individual folded paper sleeves all together in an open-air fold-over plastic sheath. 2) They're NOT for your standard extended-range/long scale 8-string. Short scale guitars only. These fit my 25.5" guitar nicely, but when I tried putting these on my Agile Interceptor 30" scale guitar, they were probably 5"+ too short. Didn't even reach the nut, much less the peg (partly because it's a string-through, tune-o-matic, long scale, and reverse-inline, so lots of extra string is needed. Also, on the paper sleeve, it tells you that it's a 30" taper, which means that the string gets narrow after 30" to fit through the tuning peg. On many extended-rang/long scale guitars, the taper will begin before the nut, which you do NOT want. You want the string to be the same diameter along the entire vibrating length. 3) The tension balance is all out of whack. The gauges are okay on the last 6 strings for 25.5" scale. A little too tight from the .054 down (I can imagine on your typical long-scale 8-string they'd be way too tight), but I drop-tune the low strings to E and A, and the .074 is totally floppy and smacking the frets and the 0.64 could definitely be thicker.The Kev
I wrote a review earlier about these strings, but I have definitely changed my mind. I do have an eight string, and I used these for it and wow…they were not very good. The most obvious thing was the .74 string gets smaller WAY before the tuners, even for my seven string. So playing the first fret feels extremely awkward. Second, palm muting on these things sounds hideously dirty compared my old strings or even the stock strings. I also have to agree that a .54 for the E string is very ridiculous. The only thing I'd recommend these for is softer playing or if you never play chords. Otherwise, get the D'Addario or any other 8-string set.Brian Dice
Ernie Ball completely failed on this one! Ernie Ball is my usual brand of string, but whoever put this set together knows absoultely nothing about string tension or 8 string guitars. 8 string guitars are extended scale instruments from 27-30", so why are they putting a .054 for the E and a .064 on the B? In their 7 string sets they put a .052 or .056 on their low B, and that's for a normal 25.5" scale. Do you see any logic in this? Then they put a .074 on the 8th string. It's actually a good choice for the 8th string tension-wise (if the rest of the strings were balanced), but it has WAY too little tension compared to the low E and B. Compared to the other incredibly heavy strings in the pack it makes no sense. If you want a nice, balanced set look into LaBella Crazy 8's, or just buy a 7 string set and add on the appropriate 8th string.
