I've built several of these diddley bow kits and they're historically authentic, with the exception of using a new guitar tuner instead of a bent nail or whittled tuner. A cigar box makes a great resonator and these diddley bows sound nice and loud. These kits are just a little more involved than the C. B. Gitty "Pure & Simple" kit (also sold on Musician's Friend: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/c.b.-gitty-cigar-box-pure-simple-3-string-slide-guitar-kit). You'll need to cut a hole for the neck to go in…but it's still a very easy instrument to build. Great for pedagogy. The guitar is played with a slide (provided) and is a great way to learn the slide guitar concept. Blind Willie Johnson started out on a one-string "diddley bow" cigar box guitar and used a pocketknife for a slide. He developed his unique slide style from learning songs on a single string. Return this before you buy it. 1. Screws on the bridge were crooked. 2. Strings broke going from F# to G (right out of the box). 3. The action on it is way too high to be playable unless you are doing slide guitar. Action should be around 1.6mm and this was at 5mm. I'd expect this from a cheap $30 guitar but not one for over $350. If I paid less than $100 for it, I'd be satisfied and would have fixed the above myself. Instead I returned it and bought one from another more reputable manufacturer. Sad as this was a limited edition hand numbered by people claiming to have been in business for decades (apparently making shoddy work). You'd honestly be happier buying one of those kits to assemble one yourself. At least then you'd pay under $100 for it and probably have better quality. In fairness, it did sound Ok plugged into an amplifier.Sad

These are mediumgauge strings, meant for guitars that are going to be played more heavily or from which you want a stronger sound. for best results with reaching the desired tuning, these should be used on a cbg that has a scale length the length from the nut to the bridge in the 2426" range. much longer or shorter than that and the strings will either be too loose and sloppy, or so tight that they break before they reach the pitch. 1 .030" nickel wound 2 .022" nickel wound 3 .014" plain steel for best results with reaching the desired tuning, these should be used on a cbg that has a scale length the length from the nut to the bridge in the 2426" range. much longer or shorter than that and the strings will either be too loose and sloppy, or so tight that they break before they reach the pitch. this string set is formulated based on our own experimentation and what has worked on our own guitars. if you want to handpick specific strings in specific sizes, this may not be the pack for you. but if you are not sure exactly what you need and want a set of inexpensive strings that should work just fine for your build, this is the ticket. please note that these strings are intended for an electric cbg with a magnetic pickup. on the subject of tuning a cbg, having a digital chromatic tuner can be a big help to get in tune, compared to tuning by ear, pitch matching or using a microphonebased tuner.

Can't tune these to open G. The low G string broke the tuning peg gear on my guitar trying to get from A to D, it was old so I replace all pegs, then it even broke the new peg. The high G string just snapped. The D string was the only one to not have a problem. Thank you very much for the strings. No problem with the quality but im new at this and the strings, when in tune are loose. I think i need thicker strings. The neck is 450mm long and from where the strings touch the 2 ends is 650mm. Could you please tell me an epic set of strings to buy and ill get them. Cheers guys Robert…. This is an electric guitar-style hard-tail bridge, but made for 3-string cigar box guitars! spacing between strings is 12mm (0.472", just under 1/2") with total distance from string 1 to string 3 being 24mm or 0.945" – just under 1 inch. each one is mounted securely by four screws, and a small allen wrench is also included for adjusting the small set screws that control string action height. see the listing photo with measurements (in millimeters) for more size specs. make sure that you pre-drill the holes for the mounting screws, as it is possible to twist the heads off otherwise.
