This guitar has an extraordinary yamaha pickup system that splits treble and bass ends of the saddle and gives you much more control over the tone than a standard pickup. see the demo. i've used it a about a dozen gigs, and it always blends in the mix nicely. the neck is a little small for my hands, and i am getting the newer, bigger version of this guitar that yamaha has just released as a replacement. in general, i am a huge fan of their pickup systems. set the demo in the youtube link to hear how the pickup works. no scratches. guitar is in great shape.

Spent quite a bit of time looking for a hybrid tapered neck classical guitar with pickups to run through a Fishman Loudbox for small venues. Checked out multiple brands, but this was the last one I tried. Great tone. With the tapered neck, I could easily switch between steel string acoustics, electrics, and this very reasonably priced instrument. Thin body provides crispness, cedar top provides warmth. I'm an acoustic folk/rock singer songwriter. I'm more of a strummer than a finger picker. I bought this because I wanted something more comfortable on my fret hand, as extended sessions with my steel string were taking their toll. This more than solves that problem. It is a much softer tone than a steel string, but I'm finding that I prefer it. I don't have to sing "over" the guitar, and my vocal tone and control has improved as a result. My previous nylon string guitars had a lot of issues with intonation and tuning, but this one is spot on. The electronics are good too. I don't really like the piezo "quack" from any acoustic electric, but this one is smoother than my steel string. It responds really well to my Fishman Aura dreadnought pedal. I know they have a dedicated Aura for nylon, but this one sounds great so no need to replace it. The string spacing is a perfect blend between a steel string and a nylon. There isn't much adjustment from my old playing style and now. It is light and thin, and can be held for extended periods without discomfort. This guitar excels in this price range, although I think any mid range guitar should at least come with a gig bag. It is definitely a good buy that you won't regret.kceltic
This Yamaha is a very nice guitar that combines the benefits of both a classical guitar and acoustic guitar. The neck is narrower than most classical guitars (more like an acoustic) but has the action and sound of a classical guitar. For players with smaller hands, the neck size makes it easier to navigate around the strings and frets. The cutaway is great when you need to reach those higher notes and the pickup in conjunction with the body size produces a terrific sound when plugged in. I wanted a nylon strung guitar but not really an out and out classical. This has a fingerboard as wide as a classical but with a flat bridge and an excellent pickup system. It's exactly what you expect. Not quite a classic guitar but will get the job done. I was thinking the smaller neck would be easier to transition to from electric but I'm thinking it may be a little too narrow for me now. I guess I'm use to the feel of a real classical guitar neck and with nylon strings this neck feels too small. Not the manufacturer's fault, the guitar is exactly as described. I could see this being good for someone who's never played a classical guitar though. Tuner and electronics work great and it's a great guitar for the price but if you've played a real classical guitar the neck may feel a little cramped.GT6L6

This is the entry level NTX model. The SDOTD price was a genuine and honest discount. But, the product description was confusing and possibly misleading. It describes an "A.R.T. System61" that is not installed on this guitar. The pickup system on this guitar is the System73. The System73 is a common under-saddle piezo strip configuration. The System61 is the Yamaha proprietary technology that is installed on all other NXT models. There is a noticeable 'runout' effect between the top halves of the sound board. Otherwise, the seam between the halves is impossible to discern. In fact, there were no seams, joins or gaps visible anywhere on the outside of this guitar. The neck and head stock are a work of art. To reiterate, the top is two spruce planks, the back and sides could be Okume or Nato. Yamaha does not list these woods as being laminated. Okume is an African hardwood and Nato is from South America. Both are considered acceptable mahogany substitutes. My guitar was made in China and sounds good enough given my untutored ear. The guitar has a truss rod, the 'urea' saddle is angled and uncompensated. My intonation and string height did not need adjustment. The NXT500's 'Slim' neck and nylon tones make this guitar hard to put down. Its also very light. I have several other steel string acoustics but I played this guitar exclusively for over a week, mostly unplugged. It plays well in my living room with a Fender Acoustasonic 15. The on-board tuner and rear-pointed tuning keys were convenient and comforting. I used them both a lot… btw, do nylon strings ever break in? The SKB-30 Deluxe Thin-Line guitar case fits this guitar perfectly. The looks of the instrument are gorgeous. When I was buying there were very few reviews for this instrument on internet. I took a leap…. This guitar will not give you real classical sound unplugged. When you plug it in you can play with the sound settings depending on what you have available. I play classical guitar in an ensamble and can add some reverb and even a bit chorus. Being a classical musician I wanted depth and warmth, so you need a good EQ. I use just a bit of piezo and a lot of inside mic but right off the bet with such set up you have feedback issues with volume on the guitar all the way down. So there is the need for anti feedback feature. During live concert I had no choice but to bring the Low frequency down and it was very uncomfortable. The guitar is hot. Despite all of it I like the guitar and I suspect there is a lot of potential with this instrument. When you finally set the sound to your liking it's very rewarding! This combo of under the bridge Pic up and inside mic gives you a lot of room to explore the sound. I took the guitar to my Luther to try to eliminate some bazz especially on 4th string, he was able to somewhat do it via bridge and he said that the freeboard is done quite good and does not need adjustment. I like the playability as well. I have another Yamaha trans acoustic that is absolutely amazing and deep but wanted to expand the range of sound variations. Hope this info helps those on the fence about buying it. I was looking at this instrument ever since it came out and am glad that I got it.Natasha

I've been playing guitar about 40 years and never considered a nylon string until this landed in my hands. I'm hooked. Great construction and materials. After owning about a half dozen crossover nylon string acoustic/electrics I took a chance on this one and overall it is very nice indeed. Pros: excellent fit and finish, comes with a high quality hard foam case, beautiful design, best sounding (amplified) crossover I've heard or played, far superior to Taylor, Godin, even the Martin 000-C, all of which I've owned. Comfortable neck profile, but did need a bit of tweaking to adjust the action. Cons: weak but fairly pleasing unamplifed sound but that was expected with the thin body and cutaway. Changing to ProArte high tension strings helped a bit. Biggest complaint is the string spacing. The nut is cut with the low E and high E too far in; a tiny bit father out would still let a steel string player appreciate the narrower fingerboard compared to all pure classical guitars and even some crossovers. The very narrow space between the nylon strings requires some serious adjustment to technique – and I have fairly narrow fingers. A person with wide fingers will have serious issues with this string spacing. FWIW, I am a professional guitarist and teacher with many decades experience and have owned more than fifty acoustic guitars, both steel string and nylon. I have several acoustic electric guitars guitars, which included a Crdoba GK studio, and by far this Yamaha ntx1200r is the BEST! The quality of the craftsmanship, materials and sound is impressive. Do not let the made in China fool you. Although they indeed made in China they are made under strict guidelines and supervision of Yamaha. This is probably why you can get this guitar for under $2000 instead of $4000 if it would have been made in Spain. This is a great guitar.mc3039
8. Yamaha Ntx900fm Acoustic/electric Nylon String Guitar

This is a beautiful instrument with solid spruce top, figured maple sides and back, tortoise binding, and on board electronics. i never performed with it live but the pickups are set up so that you can control the nylon lower strings and wound upper strings separately. includes ohsc and sound hole feedback baffle from yamaha specifically for this line of guitars (you can see it in the pic of the case on the bottom right). it has either a flaw or old damage on the soundboard that's hard to capture on camera but you can see it in the 9th pic – a line along the grain from the bridge across the lower bout with a couple of dent blemishes to the side. it's not a crack and has not changed since i've owned it (3 years). other than that it is in excellent condition. i can't find that this one is made anymore. plays and sounds great.

The looks of the instrument are gorgeous. When I was buying there were very few reviews for this instrument on internet. I took a leap…. This guitar will not give you real classical sound unplugged. When you plug it in you can play with the sound settings depending on what you have available. I play classical guitar in an ensamble and can add some reverb and even a bit chorus. Being a classical musician I wanted depth and warmth, so you need a good EQ. I use just a bit of piezo and a lot of inside mic but right off the bet with such set up you have feedback issues with volume on the guitar all the way down. So there is the need for anti feedback feature. During live concert I had no choice but to bring the Low frequency down and it was very uncomfortable. The guitar is hot. Despite all of it I like the guitar and I suspect there is a lot of potential with this instrument. When you finally set the sound to your liking it's very rewarding! This combo of under the bridge Pic up and inside mic gives you a lot of room to explore the sound. I took the guitar to my Luther to try to eliminate some bazz especially on 4th string, he was able to somewhat do it via bridge and he said that the freeboard is done quite good and does not need adjustment. I like the playability as well. I have another Yamaha trans acoustic that is absolutely amazing and deep but wanted to expand the range of sound variations. My first guitar was a nylon-string classical guitar made in Spain. The neck was wide as expected, but that wasn't an issue for me when I was 11 years old. However, this guitar's neck is thinner and that's one of the reasons I went with this model. The action is also low right out of the box which I like. It is a joy to play. The sound when unplugged it's good, but the guitar really comes alive when using an amplifier. The built quality is great. And the case that comes with it is very, very good as well. If you want that nylon-string guitar sound with a friendly neck profile and low action, then this is a great choice.Carlos
Excellent instrument . It takes a while to get used again to a wide fingerboard but very good for finger style. I particularly liked the strap button near the heel and first class protective gigbag.. This is a great acoustic guitar for any beginner player or someone who wants a second guitar or a nice backup guitar. it is used, and it does have some scratches and a few dents, two of which i took pictures of and circled in the pics. the top is solid spruce and the back and sides are laminate mahogany. the factory pickup works great and sounds very good. i just had it restrung with elixir lights and setup at music villa in bozeman montana, it comes with a hard case that has some damage to one corner, shown in the last picture.

I have been playing for over 30 years and have played some very nice guitars in my time. In this particular case, I was looking for an acoustic/Elec to do some weeknight duo stuff at some bars. I had a budget and For the value you get for the money I kept coming back to Yamaha. Their stuff is just solid and reliable. I was leaning towards the a-series, because of the included hardshell case, but this deal came across and I just could not justify NOT getting it. I purchased a hardshell case and feel like this will more than do the job. The unplugged acoustic tones are very nice…perfect balance of warm and bright. The electronics are a bit on the thin side, but certainly not bad. What more could you expect for a sub guitar…as least that was my deal. Sure I would love to splurge for a killer Taylor or Martin, but for what I need right now, this is perfect. And it would not be hard to sell for what I purchased it at. Even the action right out of the box was perfectly setup to my liking…really hard to believe!John
I'm an intermediate player and my Cadillac guitar is a Taylor DN3, which is unbelievably wonderful, but I wanted a less expensive quality practice guitar that I wasn't so paranoid about damaging. The only two I liked was this Yamaha and a Washburn DN10. I visited several shops and played both and the Yamaha was consistently good and I liked the sandburst finish. Please don't buy into the thought that this guitar can sound as good as a Taylor/Gibson/Martin guitar. Think about that. It just ain't true, but that doesn't mean the cheaper guitar is a bad thing and I would highly recommend this Yamaha to beginners and intermediate players. Generally, cheaper guitars impede progress, and that's why I advise to spend a bit more and buy this Yamaha. It plays easily and sounds good, not great, but very good. I did lower the strings by sanding the saddle and the truss rod was completely loose as expected, but it only took about 3 quarter turns to correct the neck. Anyway, I love this instrument. By the way, the electronics are also very good, much better than the K&K I put on my Taylor. Very true to the acoustic sound of the guitar. Good luck.Boopie Doopie
I am not an experienced player (self taught pick and strum for a few years), and have always found acoustic guitars difficult to play. This is not. I can jump to a barr F or G minor without worrying that I will get dead strings or buzzing. It plays all the way up and down the neck without inappropriate vibrations and if it is in tune at the first fret, it is still in tune at the 11th fret. It is set up perfectly straight out of the box. It has the rich ring, resonance, and projection that you can only get from a solid top. I am very impressed, especially considering the price. I haven't used the electronics capabilities yet, so can't review that. I picked this up as a "condition 4" used, and had concerns that there would be things wrong for the extremely reduced price. There is nothing wrong with the sound. There are visual defects (some small scratches and a pretty big ding on the bottom corner where someone obviously dropped it), but nothing that hurts the sound. Since I couldn't return a "condition 4," MF was very good about describing exactly what the flaws were before I made the purchase, and they certainly did not understate the extent of the damage. They also e-mailed me pictures of the guitar. I was as happy with the customer service as I am with the guitar.NTOT

I was looking for a good beginner's guitar, and I wanted something with nylon strings. I did a pretty extensive search in order to find an instrument that was relatively inexpensive yet had some degree of quality. I read reviews on this particular model, and most seemed to be pleased. I was able to purchase one that, I'm guessing, had been returned, and I was very pleased with both the reduced price and the condition/quality of the guitar. The guitar itself has a very beautiful and mellow tone. It stays in tune, only requiring minor adjustments from time-to-time. I would not recommend this for young people or those adults with smaller hands, as the neck is somewhat wider than one might expect. All-in-all a very fine instrument for the price.Swewpa
This is the best beginner/student classical guitar there is bar none. It's full size and the intonation is spot on, the tuners (whilst basic) are fully functional and consistent. The bridge saddle has 3rd string compensation and is set to a low-ish action. Putting a new set of EJ45's opens up the sound considerably (don't play with the crappy strings that are on it). Great second or studio guitar for the experienced player. Stick it in a half decent case and you'll have a fantastic holiday guitar for around £150. The spruce soundboard already sounds good and will improve with age. Buy, play it – chuck it about. – it's very well made and robust. Finish is shiny and cleans with a wipe. Buy it today.Warwick M.

Having relatively recently started learning guitar on an electric stratocaster-style guitar this was a great transition to the acoustic segment. The thinner body makes it much more comfortable to play than say a dreadnought and the neck is comfortable to transition too, yet the guitar doesn't seem to sacrifice as much sound as you'd expect from a thinner guitar. The finish of the guitar is that of a more expensive guitar for example the rosewood finger board. On arrival I actually thought the guitar looked better than the pictures on the website suggest but do note that because of the finish it is prone to showing finger marks which would need cleaning time to time. After suffering a permanent back injury I could no longer play my elictric guitar as it was too heavy or my acoustic electric guitar because it felt like it was twice it's normal size because I could no longer find a comfortable position for myself to play it. I bought a keyboard thinking that I could still play music. Afterv two weeks of playing around with the keyboard I gave up pllaying. Then I saw on the internet one night an advertisement for a 3/4 size Yamaha acoustic electric guitar guitar with a slimline bosy which looked like a nice guitar so I checked out males and females playing it and sounded very nice so I bought one. Man am I'm so glad I did. I got the sunburst like this one on sale. I was excited as l took it out of the box and went straight to my mancave and started playing it. It was perfecty in tune and for a guitar of this size it's got such a beautiful tone playing ACOUSTIC. So I plugged it in and it's as good as it sounded on YouTube. As an 67 yesr old man who started playing guitar when I was 16 years old, this is a beauty. The only thing I'm not entirely happy with is the action. It's just a little too high. Other than that, I love it. It's a very nice looking acoustic for the money. It stays in tune extremely well and I was shocked at how full the sound was even with such a thin body. Sounds even better plugged in. The thinner body is super comfortable to handle and hold. It makes the transition from electric to acoustic very easy. The built in tuner is one of my favorite features. It works great and seems to be as accurate as any other tuner I've ever used. Overall, I would recommend this acoustic to anyone on a budget looking for a great sounding and feeling acoustic who doesn't mind the action a little on the higher side. (Side Note – I might be too critical on the action since I'm used to my electrics set up for such low action.)

I bought this guitar to check out a budget friendly offering from Yamaha. I have to say I was not disappointed! Excellent tone and volume, the top really resonates. The guitar was really well setup right out of the box. It needed about 3/4 of a clockwise truss rod adjustment, no prob. Other than that it didn't need any fret dressing whatsoever. That's really impressive for a Chinese guitar. Heck even one of my Mexican Martins needed fret dressing out of the box! Also intonation was spot on and this also is important in your guitar. There is a point of quality when an instrument reaches when it stops being seen as "better or worse" but rather just a different flavor. This Yamaha has reached that point. You can play it alongside a guitar costing 5x more and it stands up well. Yamaha is also one of those rare companies with a long history of top quality across all kinds of products, and guitars are an area Yamaha knows well. This is just a beautiful guitar through and throughout. You can get beautiful uncompromisingly great studio recordings with this guitar. I've owned many acoustics over the years, MANY, and this Yamaha is one of the best sounding I've ever owned. Went to GC just to check out a few lower end acoustics to pick up for jamming on, and tried almost every one in the room. Picked this one up last just before I was ready to leave, and immediately was blown away by the sound and playability, brought a couple friends to listen and tell me which one they thought sounded the best, and hands down this won over all of them. It has the tone and warmth of a Martin D34, which I have owned a few, and it plays like a dream. The neck is so sliky smooth, easy to fly up and down with no effort. It has amazing sustain and beautiful tone, I fell in love with it and just couldn't put it down. I didn't expect a guitar of this price range to sound as good as it does, got it home and I couldn't put it down. Played for 4 hours straight, and even after trying to put it down to go to bed at 1am I found myself playing a for a few more minutes before I could actually go to sleep. Love this Yamaha more than any guitar I've bought in the last decade. The best thing about it is, It gave me the desire to pick up playing guitar again, after hardly touching any of my other guitars for almost a year it's the one I want to play more than all of them. This guitar is the replacement for the CG171S that I have. Mine is sitka spruce, while this is european. Prior to owning this guitar I had a couple of Taylor nylon stringed guitars, but when I got this I was pleasantly surprised at the tonal quality and projection. Taylor nylons pale in comparison, and though the nut width is wider, the neck profile is thinner which makes it very comfortable. The only thing that could be better is if it had a solid back & sides, but the solid top is the most important.kats

I love to sing. I picked up the guitar fifty years ago to accompany myself and never get tired of uncovering its mysteries. This is my first twelve string and I love it. I haven't owned several dozen high end guitars. I've owned a few. I'm very selective and careful in choosing what I like and then I stick with it; sometimes for decades. My first guitar was a Yamaha FG-150 and I've always been sorry I didn't hang onto it. Reading and digesting reviews coupled with a good dose of nostalgia guided me to this one. I had some reservations about twelve strings in general regarding tuning and keeping it in tune. Nothing to it. This guitar is remarkable in its ability to stay in tune. It is truly quite easy to play and sounds fantastic and full. I have short muscular farmer fingers and find this guitar quite easy to play. I attribute this to the shape of the neck which I find quite comfortable. Fit and finish is beautiful and I particularly love the wood binding. It looks great in a less is more fashion and I couldn't be happier. In the month or so I've had it this guitar has been in daily use without an issue. At this price this guitar is a tremendous value and I have no problem in recommending you get yourself one if you can. Enjoy yourselves and don't forget to practice.I don't have one. Pen name is So
Great sounding guitar out of the box. No adjusting needed. It's been a long time that my chest gets a good rumble from the low end of a guitar. This one does it. The mids are just right and highs are where they should be. I don't know why I have not discovered a LL series Yamaha guitar before. I have had all the expensive brands. I have played and preformed for over 30 years. For the money, this guitar is the best one I have ever bought. I'm simply blown away by how well this guitar performs. This is the first Yamaha I've ever owned and straight up purchased it because my incredible service engineer Josh recommended it.
