Its a little by chance what you get from mex. fenders in terms of craftsmanship and details. Mine has a little dent and a little gap between neck and body but it is sturdy. Fret work is not like americans. Tone wise and playability is good. I like the look of pau ferro wood. Neck shape is comfy not like 70s baseball bat p bass more like 70s j bass. The orange color is the reason i pick this one, fender changing colors every two three years so if you have this color in mind go for it. Much much better in real than pictures. Overall, if you need a good practice/little jamming bass its a good alternative. Instead of squiers go for this. I have sire as well, if you dont like/need active preamp simple is the best. Also, this new pickups are good, have good bass and midrange not scooped like some american pickups. One final thing, I've tried couple of player series before ordering this, some of them is not well at all in build quality. So, it is a little surprise what you get, check after you buy it and then decide to keep it or not. Have fun..
Purchased the Fender Player Jazz bass. Overall great looks and sound, but some quality issues from the Fender Mexico factory (not Andertons' fault): – First bass had very clear weird uneven blemish under the varnish on the sunburst body. Not awful, but if I was in-store I would never have chosen that particular item. Returned and swapped by Andertons, no quibbles. Second bass arrived. Overall happy, sounds great, but still a few issues with quality control and design. – Control plate was missing 2 screws and was moving around – how does that get through Fender quality control? Replacement screws sent free of charge by Andertons. – Nut has not been slotted correctly – high G must have been passed through a machine and slipped, string is clearly a couple of mm too close to fretboard edge and you can see the failed first pass. Doesn't really affect playability, but is annoying and I will get it corrected at some point. Again, points to poor quality control. – Fretboard (Pau Ferro) is really thin – on the Player series, at least. Neck fret dot markers in white are half over the mid-dark fretboard, half over the light maple neck. Very hard to see in low light levels. OK, so they're just an indicator for position, but the design isn't great. So overall, the bass sounds great and Andertons service was very good. …and falls in love. Let me start by saying I actually have owned one other P-Bass. I had a 50s reissue Precision, but honestly the neck was just too thick for my liking after years of playing Jazz basses. Honestly, it felt thicker than the neck on my Yamaha 5-string. So, I picked this bass up after always dancing around getting what would be considered a more standard P-Bass. I have a 70s Jazz with a ton of modifications, I've had quite a few other brands of basses, but I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I ordered this a few weeks ago, and have been very pleasantly surprised. The action was pretty good out of the box. I adjusted it a bit, made a few tiny tweaks to the intonation, and now it's super smooth. And, on the pickups, let me say it's a great sounding bass. Pickups are clear, bass sounds great. I play through a little Ampeg Micro cabinet. Earlier this week, I bought some Flats to throw on it (because that's what you do with a P-bass, right?) and now it's quickly becoming one of my favorite instruments to jam with. It really cuts through the mix when playing in a group. I see why folks really love the sound of a precision. My Jazz still has it's place, but man, I really like the sound of this bass. The Player P is a great value for what you get. I've never owned an older MIM, but I research the heck out of pretty much any purchase I make, and it looks like Fender really stepped it up with this rendition of their MIM Precision basses. Good tone out of the box, no discernible pickup noise, good action, a beautiful neck, and a Tidepool Blue finish that just shines and shines.Dennis F

This bass is being used in church. It sounds great and looks great. There was a few things that needed attention. Action height needed lowering. Relief needed adjusting. Strings were replaced with Fender black,nylon wound. All adjustments were made to Fender specs (found on Fender website) for a P Bass. polished frets and conditioned fretboard. Its an incredible invest. All is great about it. Obly pointer is jack socket is a bit on the weak side noticeably. But just needs care and in tye long run ill excuqnge it for a better one. Some other details will be upgraded in the long run, qnd im sure if no bif accidents happen i got a decent bass for life. I am not a touring bassist though, i use it for rec9rding. Very happy with it overall, can handle many genrez. Very noiseless.
I know some musicians reflexively cringe a bit when they hear the name "Squier". But this bass is proof you can get a really good instrument for not a lot of money. I'm not a P-Bass expert, but to my ear, this bass sounds very pleasantly full and throaty with the tone knob wide open, and mellow and thumpy with it turned down. I'm also quite impressed with the quality control. The setup was pretty darn good right out of the box. I haven't needed to do a thing to it. I can't say the same even for my $900 Geddy Jazz, which arrived with mile-high action. One problem I did have was that one of the pickups was pressed all the way down and caught on the fingerboard. I popped it loose, but it remained a bit floppy. The guys at my local Sam Ash put some new foam under both pickups and now they're nice and tight. If you get one, you may want to add foam to make it stiffer. If you want a Precision Bass, but you're on a tight budget, this one will do very nicely. Love this thing! I had a problem with the sound on the first one but Musicians Friend got me all straightened out. The midrange sound was really quiet while the highs and lows were loud. They sent me a new one and took the return on the bad one. The replacement sounds great! I had a setup and new strings done by my local music shop and she sounds amazing. Intonation is now spot on. I love the look and feel of this one with all the rounded edges. Love the sound. She has a snarl in the low end that I haven't heard with any other company. I also own a squire 60s classic vibe p bass but i think i like the sound of this one better. Love the sound of this heavy, neck diving beast. There's lots of tone to play with using the 5-way pickup selector. If played light enough you can avoid the fret buzz, of which is hard to get rid of with truss and saddle adjustments, but that can be said of a heavy hand on most guitars in general. The neck dive is severe like all the weight is really just the neck, but I don't notice it much when playing. It's just something to keep in mind if you play standing and lift both hands off the guitar to quickly adjust a mic or amp knob settings. The finish is kind of satin, as if it were printed on with an ink jet printer. It leaves the soft wood body pretty vulnerable to slow moving collisions against sharp corners. The Pre-Black Friday sale price on this guitar is a STEAL though! Definitely worth it for a Music Man bass sound for recording, or gigging if your willing to put up with the minor issues of weight and neck dive.Zach

Overall: I own other ESP guitars, all incredibly nice, but in their price range, unbeatable!! Having said that, I was just amazed at the quality of this instrument. I'm picking up bass again after a bunch of years not owning one. I can't imagine a better guitar to get my chops together with. I've been doing this a long time, being in the retail end beginning in the late '60's, and have appraised MANY instruments, but if someone were to hand this bass to me, my estimate would have been WAY off!!The other reviewer of this bass said it looked like it should cost THREE time what it does. First off, I am a Metal guy, specifically Black Metal and Doom Metal with some Death Metal influences. I do not play Jazz. Never really did. My main sound is heavy and fretted. But there are times when having a fretless bass for Metal in your arsenal would be a definite asset. I am not looking for a bass guitar version of an upright bass, not looking for flatwounds, and not paying 700 to 1000 dollars for a bass that does not deliver as far as Metal Music goes. But this bass has the goods. It is a genuine Heavy Metal bass. It comes specifically installed with and uses roundwounds, it does not try to sound like an upright even though it has that signature fretless "mwaah" sound that leaves no doubt that this is a fretless bass. And a thousand bucks? Hell no. 500 range for 4 string. Even though I use a lot of external EQ and other electronics, you can tailor, tweak and adjust your sound with the internal active electronics on the bass itself. The natural satin finish means no grubby fingerprints and no need for polishing. Now unfortunately, a drawback with many basses that offer a great sound with a great sustain like this one is that they tend to be very solid, or heavy. This is no exception, but it is often the "nature of the beast". I use an extra wide padded leather bass guitar strap and the weight is no longer an issue. If you are into modern music, specifically Metal, you simply cannot go wrong checking this bass out.
Really enjoying this bass. It’s light weight makes me carry it around more, and therefore play and practice more. The stock strings are D’addario, which sound great. Really nice touch on a sub $500 instrument. I’d normally drop $45 on Chromes the instant a new bass comes, but not time. Quality is impressive, spalted maple is really nice looking. Overall made me consider ESP guitars/bass as another option (I’m all Fender, aside from this instrument).Justin

This is the first bass I've ever purchased, I've only played (6 stringed) guitar in the past. This bass is an excellent value for money — it has a great look, and the sound is very good given the price point. The only issue I've experienced is that Rocksmith told me the volume on the instrument is quite low; however, this does not seem to prevent it from hearing the instrument, or being able to tune it correctly. Overall, if you're looking to get into bass for the first time, or moving over from guitar, but are not sure you want to drop $500-$1000 on a bass up front, I would certainly recommend this model. I'm just a dumb beginner, plugged it in and played it right off the bat! Not looking for a pro bass (isn't that a sporting goods chain?). Description said "candy apple red", picture showed a traditional bright red, not candle apple. Bought it anyway. I found this guitar to be very very high-quality the neck feels great the controls are very stable in the highs and lows in fadeouts of the volume and tone pots are fantastic. The tiny switch is fantastic because I can switch in and out of phase between the pick ups which equals more tone options. The frets are a little sharp and will need filing down in the base will need to be set up out of the box other than that the strings are perfect and do not sound hollow or old. I've been playing guitar for many years. Dealing with the pandemic isolation, I decided to teach myself bass guitar. I have had standard scale basses in the past but never warmed up to them. I tried a short scale and, viola, I now enjoy the instrument. Guild has been making quality products for ages and this bass continues the tradition. I'm glad to have it in my guitar family. Superb joinery, finish and fretwork. I find this bass to be very comfortable to play and especially like the neck width (narrow) and profile. Don't understand why it ships with round wound strings, because this bass cries out for flats! I put some Chromes on mine almost as soon as I got it. Do take note that many short-scale string sets are too short for this bass because even though it is, in fact, a short scale, medium-scale string sets generally fit it better due to the greater distance between the "harp" tailpiece's saddles and ball end attachment points (when compared to, say, many Fender bass bridges). The individually height-adjustability of the pickup pole pieces is nice for dialing in even string-to-string response. On many other basses, this procedure is more a matter of "splitting the difference", since it involves raising or lowering the entire pickup. In response to another reviewer's comment about limited tones: I have found that to whatever extent this may apply due to the single pickup configuration and passive circuitry, the tonal palette of this instrument can easily be expanded with careful amp selection, an outboard pre-amp and/or various pedals (not that it can't stand on it's own, unsupplemented). I run mine through 2 amps simultaneously (isolating the signals with a Lehle AB/Y pedal): adding very mild gain/distortion to one output with a Darkglass pedal and leaving the other clean to maintain fullness of the lower freqs. If you're wondering about the ergonomics, the body is almost exactly the same size as that of a Gibson ES-335. If mine got stolen or destroyed, I would immediately buy another one. I've tried several other basses since buying a Starfire, and always wind up going back to them: they just look, sound and feels "right". I also have a Starfire II, but don't like the Starfire I any less on account of that and don't plan on getting rid of either one. This bass was intended to complete my small collection of bass guitars. I had considered other semi hollow body instruments such as Epiphone and Fender. However, I'm not a fan of anything made in China or Indonesia but I have owned Korean crafted instruments in the past and I can say I've never had a complaint about them whatsoever. This Guild Starfire is a very comfortable short scale bass. The neck is narrow at the nut, similar to a jazz bass, and the string spacing is not too tight for me. The sound is very familiar to anyone who follows the early days of 1960's psychedelic rock bands, Jefferson Airplane. or The Byrd are two great examples. But this Starfire definitely holds its own in any country or western music genre band. My own band mates complimented and love the sound it produces. It's definitely enough as a single pickup model, but there is also a two pickup model also available. But I prefer the original look, feel and sound of this single pickup Starfire bass.Taino Ti

I play in a Scottish-folk band as well as a rockabilly/Americana band. Band mates in both groups like my JC better than my J-Bass. They say the tone cuts through better, and they are better able to hear me. I find the three-way switch is great for a quick change, though the tone control itself (as other reviewers have noted) is kind of quirky and best just left dimed. Out of the box, the action was fine, but with modest fret buzz on the D & G strings, and the intonation as poor (measurable at the third fret and ear-detectable above the fifth fret). My luthier (a great guy and genius) raised the treble side of the nut and set the intonation so playability is really good. As others have noted, there is a bit of neck dive, but I'm learning to live with it given how much I enjoy the bass overall. By the way, I got the Chicago blue finish. It's a head turner – really nice looking. Got the correct case with it. The latches are not quite as heavy duty as I like, but the fit is perfect and the overall construction seems solid.Big Jim ATL
It arrived needing very little setup. I've been playing it for two weeks and I haven't adjusted anything. I work on my own guitars so I measured everything and it's all very close to specs. Nut height is good, relief good, really the only adjustment I might make is to lower the bridge just a hair, but it's by no means necessary. This is an instrument that inspires you to play and actually makes you a better musician. The pickup is so clear and can get so many different tones. With the impedance switch you get tones ranging from upright bass to heavy rock bass. It's also very responsive to different styles of playing and attack, or how hard you pick/pluck. It's like having three basses in one. On the impedance settings, the lowest is very open, acoustic sounding, very musical and sensitive to dynamics. The middle position is similar to a Fender bass, P or J bass etc. The high setting can add some beef to your tone and is good for distorted or heavier rock sounds. For reference, the bass can get Paul McCartney tones, 60's 70's tones, really versatile bass. My only complaint is that it is not as comfortable as something like a P-Bass. Where I rest my arm on the body has a hard edge that I am getting used to. Like an acoustic, where your right arm gets uncomfortable resting on the edge of the body. I'm looking at installing an arm rest and I made a foam cushion that I taped on the body that helps some. It's not an issue sitting down, so maybe this is more of a studio bass.Chris
I discovered this at Bass Northwest on an all day excursion playing everything they had. The JC had just been released. The first thing I noticed is that it felt broken in already even as brand new. The full scale neck was assuring I knew I was playing the real thing. The pickup and the way it interacts with this semi-hollow/hollowbody hybrid is just amazing. Sound: You can't go wrong on tone with the construction of this bass: maple/walnut neck through mahogany body, EMG pups, active pre. Right off the bat, you have good tone. The neck is fast and easy to play. This bass sounds more expensive than it actually is. Features: Well, a bass built in this fashion SHOULD feature a 35" scale, and this one does not. The 34" scale is fine for E-A-D-G, but the B is FLOPPY! There are some players that really like a loose B string, but I'm not one of those players. 🙂 All due respect, I like my strings nice and tight from one end to the other for optimal string response. Also, the bass only has a two band active pre, and for a bass constructed as this one is, I would expect to see a 3-band. I was highly disappointed when I discovered this… Ease of Use: NARROW STRING SPACING. I have big hands with long, chubby fingers. I play fingerstyle, and I need a little bit of room to dig in when I'm playing. I can see the narrower string spacing being great for pick players, or for people with small hands and skinny fingers. If you have large hands and fingers, though, you definitely want to play this bass BEFORE you buy it to make sure you can deal with the narrow spacing. Quality: The construction and quality control seemed top notch. The natural matte finish did not show any mistakes in the manufacturing of this product. The bass is well balanced, and it sounds great. Value: I would say the value is only average. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice bass, and it does sound good and play good. I'm rating value a "6" because of the disappointment of not having a few key elements that are typically desired with a bass built to this particular standard. There was only a 2-band EQ, not a 3-band with mid control. The string spacing is so narrow, the bass is practically unplayable for big guys like me. Schector simply missed it with this bass, in my opinion, because the competitors are building basses with better components and better design. This bass, for me, is slightly above average for basses in this price point. When I was shopping for my 5-string bass, I played this Schector, along with the Schector Stiletto Custom, Traben Chaos Obsession, Ibanez SR505, Fender American 5-string American Jazz, Warwick Corvette Standard (ash body), and others. Out of all the listed basses, I liked the Traben Choas Obsession the best because it is comparable to this bass, but has 35" scale, 3-band EQ, wide string spacing, and a really innovative bridge design. The Traben was right for me, and I know it was because I played every 5-string bass that I could get my hands on to make sure that it was. All that said, this bass is a nice bass that simply fell short FOR ME. This bass may be perfect for you. Play it and find out.

This was caused by the neck being badly seated into a tight pocket that contained wood shavings when the neck was removed for reseating. I ordered this guitar in the sale on New Years day and I eventually received it on 12th January but sadly it was badly damaged in transit due to exceptionally poor packaging. The end result was that the guitar was no longer available and I would have to choose another or I could wait and they may get stock in the future or a refund. So I purchased a different guitar and I have that now they knocked me £20 off for the hassle of having to buy a different guitar bearing in mind I ended up spending £600 more so you would have thought a bigger gesture but hey I have my guitar.Tim D.

I bought this bass 9 months ago and the quality hasn't changed a bit. I've played about 10 gigs with it, I love the look, the feel, and, most importantly, the sound. We play mostly pop punk and the active pickups really give you that meatier bass tone, especially when paired with the right pedal. I bought this bass open box, so there were a couple cosmetic differences (chips/cracks in the gloss), but the electronics work great. One thing I didn't realize is that active pickups require a 9 Volt battery, which I changed about 6 months in. There's a compartment in the back that unscrews and holds that bad boy in there, quick fix, easy peasy. If you're looking for a quality bass to play some rock, this is it. Bought this bass from open box inventory. Musicians Friend had good photos of damage/repairs and when I called with questions they were VERY honest and knowledgeable. After I got the neck adjusted and raised string height slightly to fit my style this is in my opinion a very good playing the bass. It has a thin neck that is smooth and fast playing. I have not had any issues with this bass going out of tune, even after playing pretty hard for hours at a time. Also I like that is somewhat less wide at the nut. Not quite like a jazz bass considerably smaller than my Rickenbacker. EMG pickups are nice and hot, I can get a huge range of tones. The only downside for me is there are no fret markers on the side of the neck. Small white dots would be nice for those of us who are still getting used to a fretless neck. All in all this was a great buy for the price.D minor
Having been a keyboard player all my life with a special appreciation 4 what the bass guitar can do, I decided to find a lefty 5-string and teach myself to play. Lefties are not plentiful, so I felt lucky to find this moderately priced model that has the quality and range of Active Electronics I wanted. It is solid and holds tune and plays easily I think. The neck is the heavy end of the guitar and I may look for a specialized strap to keep the neck up when my right hand is not on the neck. The 18 volt active knobs work as expected. The look of the guitar is very nice and I don't believe it looks plain, rather it is a finished natural Satin that frankly is in Vogue with the better players. All in all I'm perfectly satisfied with the quality of the choice I made. I'll be putting on a set of strings that allow smoother slides and doing a bit of jazz fusion as well as rock and old school R&B. I'm into the tones of Miller / Jaco / Tal / Clarke, etc.Stellan

Took this out of the box last week and immediately started practicing for a gig the same week. I have a Hofner , but wanted a solid body for some of the heavier tunes but still a small scale neck. Action and set-up were fine out of the box with no fret buzz. I may put flat-wounds on, but not sure yet. Tone and pick up were good. Mine was a blemish-so I got a discount. Anyway, I used it at the gig with no problems and never switched to the Hofner. Nice bass for the price. Whether it becomes my go to remains to be seen.Mike V
As a broke musician this guitar will keep you rocking. the sound quality is solid and the price out of this world. Get one today or risk getting old, dull, and boring. I bought this guitar and the 6 string version. I like the short neck, it makes playing that much more enjoyable. I am sorry but for this price the overall quality of the guitar you are not going to be dissappointed. As a short scale instument I was concerned about the sound this bass guitar would make. I was not disappointed. Of course Ibanez has made great guitars and this is no exception. As a left handed musician it becomes difficult to find suitable guitars. This guitar and the Mikro 6 string electric are both proud members of my guitar collection. These are not toys and produce great sound. I thank Ibanez for offering this guitar at a reasonable price. There is no excuse not to rock now!!! I couldnt find any flaws in quality on this unit. A truely beautiful guitar. The value is out of this world. You cant find a quality guitar for this price. After playing this bass guitar I don't want to play my 30" scale Beatle bass anymore much less a 34" scale bass! Lol. It is so easy to play that it makes me wonder why Fender introduced their first bass guitar with a 34" scale. This bass runs circles around any long scale bass guitar. Add to that the super fast neck, low action, P/J pickups, great tone and Ibanez quality construction is just amazing. This is now my main bass guitar after 40 years of longnecks. Fender didn't let me down again. I have a 70s Fender J bass but wanted to see what modern Fenders are like and to vary my tone portfolio a bit. Wow. I was not disappointed. I have tried a few 'vintage' P basses but don't believe the hype. In the case of Fender P basses, newer is better, especially with the new lovely rolled fret board. First time I picked it up it felt played in. I have tried other guitar shops (the usual suspects) and bout guitars from most. In my experience, PMT have the best customer service. Bought this for my girl friend. At first my overall impression was: "meh." But I figured at least it's cheap. Very shortly after getting this brand new bass the e string broke. The GF was in tears. So I ran to the local guitar shop and purchased a set of D'addario EXL165 strings, as per their recommendations. Obviously whatever Ibanez put on was junk (broke and sounded and played horribly.) The new strings made this guitar come alive with tone and character. Differences in tone between bridge and neck pickups became very distinct. Much more sustain, bend, overall control and playability. Much easier on the fingers. She doesn't have to press as hard and no more buzz.Toytrk

At the price, it's impossible to beat. The tuners and the bridge are better than I expected. Electronics work nicely, usable strings for a burn-in period. It needed less than 10 minutes to tune, adjust and intonate. The neck is unfinished, I'm going to seal it with tung oil and lightly scuff it with some steel wool. I'm already assuming the frets will have some high/low spots. Surprisingly, the fret ends are dressed nicely. I see people have complained about cutting their fretting hand on sharp fret edges. Not the case here but necks do shrink a tiny amount depending on climate and that shouldn't really be a valid complaint. It's easy to fix fret ends and at this price I would expect to do it. No pick guard so the patched area near the pickups can be seen if you look close enough. As I'll be putting in a pick guard eventually, it's no big deal. I did buy it as slightly scratched so that's it for the "issues". In short, I'm happy. It's also a fair bit lighter at the body than I expected. I don't see that as a bad thing.kfries-half
For a guitar player getting into the world of the bass guitar this was almost too good to pass up. After a simple bridge adjustment and raising the pickups a tad this is a really functional bass to learn on. Sounds good, no fret buzz (outside of my poor playing).
