Silk ans Steel strings seen to have less tension a smoother feel and sound mellow. I use them on my parlor guitar and they are plenty loud. I fell back in love with my parlor guitar after putting silk and steel strings on. I still use EXP17's on my dreadnought and different sizes on my electrics like heavy tops on my 335 and 10's on the tele and about to try 7's on my strat. I think guitars are all different and need strings that match the guitar and the style of your playing. I have no problem going from one gauge to another. Most of my practice is on the acoustic with the 13-56 tuned Eb, then when I pick up another guitar It seems to be faster and easier along with being more fun if that's possible. I love D'Addario strings sorry now spending so much money on trying other brands. I recommend trying D'Addario silk and steel on any folk/acoustic guitar first!Lewis
I'm no professional. I like to play around the house and I often do solo music in church. I tend to only play acoustic guitar because I love the sound. However, the 80/20's make me want to vomit both in sound and feel. These strings take anything you play and transform it into a smooth and beautiful piece of art. They feel wonderful, very soft but still very present. They sound so warm, but also articulate every sound. If the EJ40's ever get discontinued, I might just hang up my axe and stop chopping down tunes.JC_Broussard
I play finger style and bought the strings to cut down on or eliminate finger scraping noise; the packaging states "virtually no finger noise." The claim is not accurate. Whether with my fretting hand (left) or plucking hand (right), the strings are only slightly less noisy than any other round-wound strings I've ever played. The finger scrapes were louder than the finger scrape noise I'm still getting from D'Addario flat tops. I am replacing these strings with flat wound strings. The manufacturer's claim of "virtually no finger noise" was misleading and I wasted my time and money. I do not recommend these strings for fingerstyle play. For any other style of play, the strings are like any others and it is a matter of the tone you are looking for. These are mellow and easy to bend.

Definitely the best strings at the price point lately. They have a thinner or smoother wind than Ernie Ball slinkys or Daddarrio exl and this results in less finger noise and a zingier tone IMO. I'm into clean and classic rock, and I doubt you would like these over the former two names if you were into more modern and metal sounds. It depends on the guitar for me, on my strat I could use just about any strings. My guitars with humbuckers seem more picky, at least to my ears. I prefer these over the other two as far as cheap strings go, and these are often cheaper. Win win. Used to be I would never have preferred Fender strings so either my tastes are changing or these strings have changed over the years.Joelish
Overall: Don't pay any attention to the low price these are great strings. Have used Fender 7250's on all kinds of bass guitars they always sound great and feel good. According to a Fender rep, these are what came on the Fender PJ bass I ordered from Musician's Friend. They produce the classic Fender tone I wanted. I eventually replaced them with a set of Fender 7250L (.040, .060, .080, .100) to make it easier to play on the guitar's 9.5" fingerboard radius. I stayed with Fender because of the tone that the 7250M strings produce. The Light's have slightly less oomph on the low end, yet all the tone while the lighter gauge makes for nice melodic work on the high end of things. I've tried DR strings with the recommendation of others and found them to be my absolute favorite for my old Yamaha acoustic. The Black Beauties, which these replaced, played great but had premature coating wear. I like the feel of them, especially on pull offs, where the strings stay put until you say go. The Neons are coated much better and everyone wows them and wants to know if they are real (or plastic). I've been a D'addario guy for a long time, and use them on all my guitars. I like the phosphor bronze tone on my acoustics, and use the extra lights because I have hand and finger joint issues. Actually 10s are pretty heavy for me, I use 8s on my electrics. Anyway, they sound great, are easy to play and have always been reliable for me.James

A friend of mine put light gauge electric strings on his acoustic guitar so it would be easier to play. I did like the feel but the sound was too thin so when I came across the Extra Light D'Addario's for acoustics I was excited to try them. My preferred style of playing an acoustic has recently become almost all finger-picking without finger picks. I tried them on my vintage classic dreadnought Yamaha F335ii and they sound good with a little less low end and a little more thin high end which you would expect. Also there is a tendency for the little E string to rattle as I use an upward stroke with the index or middle finger to play it. I will try switching that string out with a little higher gauge to alleviate that problem. Your style (light or heavy) of playing may determine whether these strings are right for you. They are great for strumming light rhythm with a balanced bright sound using a Fender thin pick so I would definitely use them for recording rhythm parts. For recording finger-picked parts I will continue using regular light gauge strings on a Martin. The D'Addario extra lights are easy on the fingers and good for practicing any style. I will only use DR high-beams probably the rest of my musical career, unless I happen to get a bunch of free strings again. Even then, I'll probably give a ton away like I did last time, so that I could start using DR's again. LOL! I can't believe I didn't add this review earlier, as I've been using them nearly 10 years. They really are as great as others say. Note, I'm not referring to any of the coated strings they make. I've used the black set they made some years ago, but they were very dull. Even the new neon colored ones seem to get mixed reviews. If you have any common sense, it's pretty safe to say they are not going to be as bright as uncoated strings, and no surprise that the color flakes off. Comparing to popular other strings (EB slinky's, Blue Steel, etc.) these are hands down noticibly better. I never had a huge string preference before DR's, and always felt I never really found "my" string. After a friend swore by DR's, I never went back to anything else. I use the high-beam's. I've used the tite-fit, blue's, and the first black coated strings they made, but the high-beam's are my babies. They are SUPER bright, and just sound great. It's unreal how long they hold their tone. Quality is unreal. These strings last forever. Having toured, and playing shows every night for months, with Ernie Balls (I had 4 boxes for free), I'd have to change every few nights. DR's eliminate that issue. They literally take months and months to lose any brightness, and almost never break. I'm not prone to breaking strings anyway, but I think I've had a DR break on me twice in the past almost decade. Tension remains true throughout their life of use. I've had these strings on a guitar that I didn't play for months, and when I picked it up, still played and sounded amazing. Still in tune too! If you don't believe me, try them out. Excellent value. They are usually about $5.99 on MF. Sometimes more in local stores, but if you compare to other crap strings, they are really only a dollar more if even. When you factor in what you're getting, it's well worth it…a string that you hardly have to replace, and hardly ever breaks.
I play Rickenbackers (a 360 and a 381). Rickenbackers have a signature sound to them, often referred to as the "Rickenbacker chime". Using a string with the right characteristics certainly aids in enhancing this tonal quality of Ric guitars and their electronics. As advertised, the Hi-Beam hex core strings are a brighter sounding string than their Tite-fit round core counterparts (they are in fact brighter than most anybody else's standard strings). Over the years, I have tried every brand and string size on the market. I only found 3 brands that supply that sparkle I like to hear from my Rics. One had great tone but was highly prone to string breakage. The other also had great tone, but lost their sparkle more quickly than I thought they should. The DR Strings LTR-9's have worked superbly. I have had no string breakage issues and they have maintained their liveliness for a reasonable period of time. I play every week-end and practice 4-6 hours during that same time period. I change strings every 6-8 weeks. I use to string heavier using 10's or 11's. However, in order to get the big bends I would sometimes want, without tuning down, I found that the 9's were an acceptable compromise and allowed me to maintain standard tuning. I have no complaints with these strings what-so-ever. They perform/sound exactly as advertised and give me exactly what I want to hear from my Rics.
Pure and even tone from string to string. Edgy. Tight lows and sparkling highs. Bright, clean, clear. But not shrill. Just a bright, clean tone. Chords ring with authority. Leads drill holes into your brain. String noise is a minimum but yet the string amazingly retains special harmonic quality. These strings seem to be high quality and well-made. Which is an incredible sound. Complicated chord voicings ring through with clarity (overdrive). I was immediately reminded of Ty Tabor's beautiful 'wall of tone' sound, filling a wide spectrum with rich, tight timbres. These strings are awesome, not because of Jimi or the Voodoo thing but because for many years Fender stopped making this gauge. They were called 150 silver bullets back then and were my string of choice that became unavailable. Old sets were usually lightly corroded and unusable. Fender fixed that by finally corrosion proofing the packaging. I've tried a lot of strings, and most of them are pretty good for about 3 days, then they start to fade.For kicks, I tried a set of Elixers, because I liked the ClearTones (but not the ClearTone price) and went from .011's to .012's just to see what a heavier set was like. I utterly hated them. I can't be sure if it was the Elixers or the gauge or my Yamaha, but I sufferd for months with them.Then I tried these, in .011's, and all that I love in a new set of strings came flooding back. I would recommend these quite highly to anyone that wants a great sound in a coated string, especially on a Yamaha acoustic. I give these a 9 out of 10, because after 2 weeks, they are starting to fade also, but maybe I'm expecting too much. Color coded ball ends. Nice for new comers, I would think. D'Addario is second to none on quality. Coated strings are slightly over priced. but Musicians Friend helps with free shipping (and no tax).
There are only 2 strings I use – Elixir's and EXPs. They are comparable if you like coated strings, which are not for everyone. If you already change strings frequently (after a few hours or every gig) then the advantages of the rust protective coating are not necessary and you're better off saving some money and going with non-coated strings. The coating keeps the strings clean under normal playing conditions for months, which is great for casual players, or those who want to get more life out a set. I've been using these strings for over a decade and they always serve me well as reliable, high quality strings that last four times longer than regular acoustic strings such as Martin. They are great for the price and just a few dollars cheaper per set than Elixer, which perform just as well. A brilliant tone, they are wonderful for my many gigs and recording projects and are perfect for the experienced songwriter. I usually replace these once every three months. They have a long life. I play these strings on my Schecter Hellraiser (diamond series). These strings sound awful (tonally) when they are new. After a week or so they are finally stretched out and get a decent tone to them. The price is economical for just playing at home or doing basic recordings. I would not play live with them or do a demo for anything with them. A good value for when you don't need the best but don't want junk either 🙂Hammerhole

I'm a big fan of Slayer. These are made for the BC Rich KK Signature V, and Kahler Tremolo. I would compare them to the heavy DAddario, or heavy DR strings. Only the GHS, or SIT strings could be a better choice. But I have played heavy metal cover band shows, and blues, and jazz settings. These can handle bends, dives, hammer ons, tapping, thrashing, and they haven't broken yet in three years of play.Slayrr

I really like these guitar strings. They are thin and flexible yet produce a nice sustaining sound. Not too bright but not at all thuddy. A nice full sound for lightweight strings. Easy on the fingers, especially if I haven't been playing much for a week or two. They bend easily enough for the sound effect while not so bendable as to play out of tune if no bend is intended. THe sealed packaging they come in assures a nice untarnished surface thus a nice crisp sound, tempered slightly by the phosphor bronze finish which means a shorter break in period and a longer lasting clear tone. All in all these are the strings of choice for my Guild D-50 guitar. They are a perfect match. I have tried many different brands and versions of guitat strings over the years and I keep coming back to these D'Addario phospher bronze strings for the right sound and the longest life. They seem to last about twice as long as the other brands and don't require a long break in period like some do. I try to keep an extra set on hand since to sealed packaging keeps them fresh new sounding indeffinately.Softouch
These are different. Forget the corrosion resistivity for a minute. First and foremost: they just sound great! Tried them on an all mohogany acoustic electric guitar – pleasing, sweet tone- amplified or not. They feel wonderful, sensitive to nuances of touch. Unlike any of the coated strings I've tried- those always just felt and played like something was, you know; BETWEEN you and the guitar! It was annoying, distracting- unnatural. These strings have none of those characteristics. I have not had them long enough to comment on longevity, but will review again when I've had more time with them. They are crisp and bright compared to other styles. My only critique is they don’t give you much to work with so not good for beginners. Otherwise I like them a lot. They're a little short but not enough that you can't use them. It's just means you can't mess up putting them on. I tried to add a video clip so you could hear the quality but for whatever reason I couldn't so you will just have to take my word for it. The sound they make is great.Candy

I've been using black beauties for years now. Originally bought them for the look they gave me on my black Tele. They really lasted a long time. And they produced good tone on the instrument. Of course some the coating wore off at the picking area after a few hours of use. Everyone expects that. But you could only tell if you get real close. the fingerboard area stays coated real well. And keeps that slick feel. I don't notice any sound degradation, and the intonation remains constant. And hey Kids, a black majic marker fixes the chipped coating! Just kidding ! I really do find that these strings last a long time and I bend them all over the frets. I constantly buy these.J W GUITARS
Overall: I'm really not that tough to please but these strings are a disappointment to me. I do like the black color, BUT – and I kid you not! – within ONE minute of playing the black was already coming off my high E string and I was playing with my fingers, not a pick! I saw what looked like a piece of fuzz on the string so I started wiping it off, only to realize it's the black color coming off further and further. Within five minutes I had about an inch and a half of bare string showing. It comes off so easy it seems lit it's just spray paint. I understand it won't last forever, but one minute?? Come on. The other thing I don't like about these strings is they have an uneven plastic type feel to them. It's not horrible, but they don't feel like "regular" strings. Other than that they sound OK, nothing special, so I'm definitely not buying these again.Tim
These look awesome and have a very smooth nylon feel. They don't sound bad at all. Maybe a little different I'm sure. They will shed the coating eventually, especially if u use a custom plectrum/pick made of metal or some other highly dense material. Metal will remove the coating immediately! The coating may also slow down the corrosion process. They are holding up good so far. I like these strings. I have a set of white strings somewhere. Those seem hard to find.jcfvintage

Okay. I do things a little differently sometimes. I have an Ovation 1778 Elite with a maple neck very similar to an electric neck. So I decided to string it like an electric. I put a set of DR 10's strings on it and replaced the wound third with a plain .018 string. Wow! This is a fun guitar to play! I'm mostly an electric guy but lately I've been playing the Ovation at home almost exclusively. There is a whole new set of lead sounds available to me and the strings sound great for flat pickin'. I'm a DR fan anyway. They are just great strings. I am really suprized at the fulness of these light strings. Try DR, you'll be glad you did.Aubieone
In over 50 years of playnig I have never found a better string than DR. I have always used the medium gauge however due to some arthritis developing in my left index finger I have switched to light gauge to see if it can help. I have never been careful about changing strings and the DR strings last a long time. I change strings once or twice a year. I play a lot and a year is too long. I would not recomment anyone wait that long as the strings, any strings, will get to sounding dull. I use acoustic strings but have a fishman pickup installed in my guitar. I have only played one gig since putting on the light gauge strings and playing thump style the bottom end seems to suffer a little so I have to come up with some adjustments like pidking harder with my thump pick. I haven,t used any other strings than DR for the past 20 years. They are definately the best.JT

My Mitchell MS450 (single cutaway LP style guitar) came with D'Add's, which sounded decent. When I switched them out, I went with the GHS 10's on a hunch based on things I've heard. Great move! Nice, brilliant tone, rings out for eternity if you let them! I have heard that the GHS 9's are really good on Strat style guitars, so GHS might be my go to on my Squier Strat Classic Vibe next string change.Joe

I figured I needed to have a heavier string gauge for durability and better tone. Searched around and came across these strings in the heavy gauge, and I could not be happier with them. These strings have great sustain, are durable, do not corrode as quickly as other brands I have used in my professional career playing music, and, despite their heaviness, are easy to play in standard tuning. Along with playing well with a pick and fingers, these strings also sound terrific when playing slide. You can get the same great tones out of these strings that Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have with their lighter gauges, as well as channeling the fat tones that you hear from Duane Allman from the Fillmore East show. Great Garcia tones can come from these strings as well. Basically what I am saying is that you can still get those classic guitar sounds on these heavy strings without feeling like your losing tone or playing opportunities utilized by the players that inspire you who may use lighter string gauges. These strings also (as far as I know) have a round core instead of a hex core. I think that might be a reason why these strings have so much sustain, especially when you have some distortion or overdrive keeping them warm while playing lead. If you are on the fence about getting these, I recommend you give them a try just see how they work for you. They are no that expensive and its worth it to figure out what works for you as a player. My son in law has owned a 000-15 for around 10 years. I've played it over that time quite a bit and have enjoyed the mid focused sound that the 000 Martin is known for. Well, last night he handed it to me with these light retro strings installed; it's like a different guitar. Full spectrum sound and just a sweetness it never had before. I concur with other reviewers that the Martin Retros bring out the True Tone of the wood. Can't speak for rosewood (yet), but for Mahogany Parlors this is your ticket to special.Tuneboy2000
I've been through about every brand of strings trying to find the *right* ones for my Martin OM-28V and OM-18C. Retros are the deal. You can really finesse the tones out of the guitars with these strings. They've got a huge dynamic range but it's controllable at the same time. Other brands of strings seem to just over drive my small bodied guitars and playing too aggressively just produces a lot of jumbled booming sound. The Retros let you play loud or soft and the tones are clear on either end. As already mentioned they're very easy on the fingers and note articulation is amazing, hammer-ons and pull-offs that were once a struggle just happen.Joe
The Martin retros are one of my favorite strings, but monel/nickel strings have a particular tone and feel to them. If that's what you're after then there's almost no substitute, but if you're expecting the sound of bronze you'll be very disappointed. Monel has a darker tone to it that will give your guitar an overall "woodier" sound, i.e. you will hear less metallic timbre and less of the type of overtones you get from bronze. Due to the properties of the metal, these strings also tune to standard at a lower tension than bronze so they will have a bit of a softer, looser feel to them. I use these on my all-mahogany Martin 00-15M. I play the guitar in open or dropped tunings a lot and I find the monel tone compliments the guitar well. It's also a long scale guitar so the lower tension is nice for comfort over long play sessions. I now exclusively use the Martin Retros on this guitar but still prefer PB on my other ones. Again, they are a niche string, but if monel is what you want, then the Martin Retros are the way to go.Drew
