A special thank you to my sales engineer Matthew Langston who helped me find this guitar. As always, he is the Sweetwater difference! The KOA top is beautiful and the 12-string sound is fantastic. The pickup selection provides a wide range of sounds to fit the genre you are playing. It has been a joy to play! It is my first Taylor steel string and I haven't been disappointed.
You can read lots of pros and cons online about this model and this is just another perspective, but based on my 50 years of professional guitar performance on solid bodies, hollow bodies, dreadnaughts and salon size steel strings, nylon string and acoustic and electric 12-string. Folks who pan this Taylor apparently would be disappointed that a vintage Gibson 335 doesn't sound exactly like a D-28 and a Les Paul Custom rolled into one. Anyone who researches this model HAS to know it is not a compromise concept, it seeks to take the characteristics of both acoustic and electric guitars and make them available in one instrument. For what it does, I think it does it superbly. I play with bare, short fingernails and no picks so this may influence my tonal perception but this thing through my JBL EON One sounds gorgeous, as good as any hollow jazz box I've had and better than most of them. Solos on the humbucker can get about as much sustain and crunch as a competent player would ask for. And as for playability: this thing is a dream to play. Pulloffs and hammers are effortless, the neck feels perfect with just enough fret height to let me thumb the strings without bottoming them. The hardware is well positioned for the most part with the tone and volume controls unobtrusive as I like them; I don't need hatbox knobs that are bigger than my bathroom faucets. Fit and finish are the usual Taylor standard, which is amazing for a mass produced instrument. All in all, my purchase of this T5-C1 with maple top was one of the best guitar buys I've ever made…and I've made a lot of them. This match feels like one made in heaven and I would encourage those players who are sophisticated enough to appreciate a concept that is fresh and well executed to look closely at the T5-C1 or variants of this model as they are available. There is little add to this review that I haven't say in my T5Z review, except that it is in a 12 string. I reduce the rating because it does not fit into other T5Z Taylor guitar cases. Yep! You need to buy a Dedicated Taylor case, since the T5Z cases are of a slightly narrower dimension. I thought getting back into professional music would be easy, no problem-BUUUUUT what I didn't take into account was all those years of abuse to my hands (in workshops all my life) took a toll. The love I have for acoustic guitars has given way to the love I now have for my new T5z. Talk about easy to play! It is more electric than acoustic, of course, but I play it all the time and am now taking a "commercial guitar" course and loving it. Without amplification, it's the best practice tool EVER! (Mine is the spruce top version) Through an amp it has more sounds and tones than can be imagined. It eventually will be replacing my acoustics for both five piece country band and twin guitars duo. I will be playing it through a Bose L-1 and Fender Blues Jr. They both sound great carrying this guitar-I'm the only thing holding it back-but that's changing. The quality, beauty, fit and finish from Taylor couldn't be better. My hands thank me every day for trading my HD28 for this inspiring T5z! I still have a lot to learn, but the T5z Standard is taking me where I want to go. Love it!!SuperJeff
FIRST AND FOREMOST: I'm just starting to play it, but my first impressions are very positive. THAT SAID: It's very flexible and interesting as an electric depending on how it's switched, and warm but crisp as an acoustic. It has a great neck and quick action, and the look-and-feel are beautiful and solid. The mahogany top is gorgeous. ALTHOUGH: It's a little light … I wish it had a bit more heft. AND: Those Taylor gig bags aren't impressive. It's not a cheap instrument and should include a hard case. IN BRIEF: Unplugged, it delivers a lovely acoustic sound; plugged in and pushed, it can certainly get wiry and crunchy. #5)Ease of use. I bought this guitar 5 months ago. After becoming blind with all of its "psychological warfare", having the jumbo frets, the spacing of the strings and the thinness of the neck has made playing guitar much easier. I like the placement of the controls. The navigation process like playing a rhythm acoustic switching to an electric lead can become quite seamless. #4) Say goodbye to cumbersome, clumsy, awkward and sore shoulders. Set up a walk off grandslam right outta box. Took off the power slinky .11's and put some regular slinky 10s on. Ahhh there we go. Book match on the wood is 99.9 percent. The fretboard scale length is a little bit shorter than all my Jackson's 25.5 Compound radius'… and what a pleasant treat indeed. This thing plays like a buttery Dream for ppl with smaller phalanges, like president tiny hands and myself. Playing it through a hartke acr5 (yea…ur gonna want one of those too)…and feeling a bit proud of that combo might I say. Tremendous. Great. Bigly huge. The best…This thing comes to life in an acoustic amp and will suffice on an electric (my grandmeister 36 good, but not in the realm of acoustic bliss)… ain't the same, get a hartke/fishman/Marshall amp to compliment this modern marvel. Spire inlay is beautiful and flawless and there is not one on the headstock as description claims; that was for first edition run. There is virtually no heel (like a 3 mm heel) on the back where the neck joins the body. You can ride it up to the Top and back in the blink of an eye, completely unimpeded. Lightning fast like an Jackson USA – Ebony fretboard, a must have for a guitar of this quality. Ebony is becoming more rare and guitar manufacturers want to give you Richlite with the same price tag. Noooo noooo noooo. Richlite only permissable on nylon string, never ever ever a steel string…and certainly not on any axe over 2k. Yea…im looking at you Henry from Gibson. From the headstock to the bridge saddle and all the dressing in between…bravo! The pups are a great match and completely buzz free. The knobs smooth and pickup selector solid. Piezo output without the unwanted extra noise. she's just perfect; Every last detail immaculate. Now I see why it won electric and acoustic guitar of the year. You get what you pay for folks and for aristocratic (only in taste) gear heads like myself…Nothing else is gonna cut it 🙂 I am always objective when I review items and am not inhibited by conformation bias just because I bought it. It Truly is a high class instrument; the Pinnacle of Sonic superiority. Take my advice now, thank me later ??
Before purchasing this guitar I played a bunch of T5Z guitars in the area. I always enjoyed their low action, neck and scale length. This guitar makes it easy to play rigorous jazz chords that are spread apart. The electronics work well with all the amplifiers I have tried it through. This guitar is also lovely unplugged for practicing around the house. I definitely recommend this instrument for the serious musician looking for a versatile guitar.
Overall: I got a blemished T5z and I still haven't found the blemish. The guitar is well above what I expected in diversity of sound. From full on Acoustic to Metal this guitar has it all. I did get a touch of feedback but I had everything turned all the way up and after I adjusted the amp it sounded great. The five settings pretty much cover everything I play. This was my first Taylor but it probably won't be my last.Dave

Most of the hybrid guitars out there have great acoustic features and one electric tone. This guitar is the only one I have found that is geared towards the electric player in a band that needs electric pickup selections (neck, bridge, both, etc) AND a great acoustic tone. It also comes with a compensated saddle made for a plain g string so you can play electric strings and bend like you normally would on an electric guitar. It was a perfect choice for my band situation!

Value: No. Not even close. I've own two $350 Ibanez acoustics that both played better out of the box than this Taylor. Very, very disappointed with the fact that it received less than zero setup from the factory. Overall: I'm going to start with the cons because they are huge and I will work to the pros.FRETS ARE HORRIBLE! 20th fret is a heavy 1/32" higher than the rest. Causes buzzing all the way back to the 11th fret. Action is extremely high. Higher than any acoustic I own, and way higher than an electric guitar. Nut height is too high and saddle height is too high. Spend $2K on a guitar and you get to spend an additional $200 on fret/neck work. zZounds will replace the guitar if I want to wait for it to be sent back and then wait for a replacement to arrive 5 days later. I will probably just spend the money and have the fretwork done, because I am a 9 show per week gigging musician and don't have the time to wait for the return/swap. I do not blame zZounds for the bad guitar I received, but I was a little surprised that they don't check the $2k instruments (or $350 for that matter) before they send them out. Other retailers would have caught this before it left their store, just sayin.Pros:Once it's made to play. It's going to be a great guitar. I do like the sound. The acoustic sounds 85% like an acoustic and everything else is just icing on the cake. I love that I can add distorted guitar to my loops. It s a sad thing, but it s time to part with my wonder taylor t5z classic. this beautiful hollow-body has a warm tone to it when unplugged, and really comes alive when put through an amplifier. the three pickups gives you a range of tones to compliment the sound you re going for. i ve had it for three years, and loved playing it both at home and for gigs. there s a small cosmetic ding in the top front edge of the body, hard to see, but let me know if you want a clearer image and i ll see what i can do. this is a great opportunity to upgrade your acoustic/electric sound! hope you take it home and enjoy it as much as i have!

I thought getting back into professional music would be easy, no problem-BUUUUUT what I didn't take into account was all those years of abuse to my hands (in workshops all my life) took a toll. The love I have for acoustic guitars has given way to the love I now have for my new T5z. Talk about easy to play! It is more electric than acoustic, of course, but I play it all the time and am now taking a "commercial guitar" course and loving it. Without amplification, it's the best practice tool EVER! (Mine is the spruce top version) Through an amp it has more sounds and tones than can be imagined. It eventually will be replacing my acoustics for both five piece country band and twin guitars duo. I will be playing it through a Bose L-1 and Fender Blues Jr. They both sound great carrying this guitar-I'm the only thing holding it back-but that's changing. The quality, beauty, fit and finish from Taylor couldn't be better. My hands thank me every day for trading my HD28 for this inspiring T5z! I still have a lot to learn, but the T5z Standard is taking me where I want to go. Love it!!SuperJeff
FIRST AND FOREMOST: I'm just starting to play it, but my first impressions are very positive. THAT SAID: It's very flexible and interesting as an electric depending on how it's switched, and warm but crisp as an acoustic. It has a great neck and quick action, and the look-and-feel are beautiful and solid. The mahogany top is gorgeous. ALTHOUGH: It's a little light … I wish it had a bit more heft. AND: Those Taylor gig bags aren't impressive. It's not a cheap instrument and should include a hard case. IN BRIEF: Unplugged, it delivers a lovely acoustic sound; plugged in and pushed, it can certainly get wiry and crunchy. #5)Ease of use. I bought this guitar 5 months ago. After becoming blind with all of its "psychological warfare", having the jumbo frets, the spacing of the strings and the thinness of the neck has made playing guitar much easier. I like the placement of the controls. The navigation process like playing a rhythm acoustic switching to an electric lead can become quite seamless. #4) Say goodbye to cumbersome, clumsy, awkward and sore shoulders. A special thank you to my sales engineer Matthew Langston who helped me find this guitar. As always, he is the Sweetwater difference! The KOA top is beautiful and the 12-string sound is fantastic. The pickup selection provides a wide range of sounds to fit the genre you are playing. It has been a joy to play! It is my first Taylor steel string and I haven't been disappointed.
You can read lots of pros and cons online about this model and this is just another perspective, but based on my 50 years of professional guitar performance on solid bodies, hollow bodies, dreadnaughts and salon size steel strings, nylon string and acoustic and electric 12-string. Folks who pan this Taylor apparently would be disappointed that a vintage Gibson 335 doesn't sound exactly like a D-28 and a Les Paul Custom rolled into one. Anyone who researches this model HAS to know it is not a compromise concept, it seeks to take the characteristics of both acoustic and electric guitars and make them available in one instrument. For what it does, I think it does it superbly. I play with bare, short fingernails and no picks so this may influence my tonal perception but this thing through my JBL EON One sounds gorgeous, as good as any hollow jazz box I've had and better than most of them. Solos on the humbucker can get about as much sustain and crunch as a competent player would ask for. And as for playability: this thing is a dream to play. Pulloffs and hammers are effortless, the neck feels perfect with just enough fret height to let me thumb the strings without bottoming them. The hardware is well positioned for the most part with the tone and volume controls unobtrusive as I like them; I don't need hatbox knobs that are bigger than my bathroom faucets. Fit and finish are the usual Taylor standard, which is amazing for a mass produced instrument. All in all, my purchase of this T5-C1 with maple top was one of the best guitar buys I've ever made…and I've made a lot of them. This match feels like one made in heaven and I would encourage those players who are sophisticated enough to appreciate a concept that is fresh and well executed to look closely at the T5-C1 or variants of this model as they are available. Put it to work for you and I am confident that the more you use it, the more you will come to appreciate how well the design concept works in allowing you the artistic freedom to express yourself through your instrument to the fullest.son_of_idiot
This guitar has all of the sweet sounds an functions of a T5Z guitar the form of a 12 string guitar. There is little add to this review that I haven't say in my T5Z review, except that it is in a 12 string. I could play for hours with this guitar, that I would not or could not do with other 12 stings. Playing is effortless, however it is dependent upon which songs you are playing. Great for Folk songs and single performers, but not for hard rock or Reggae. As with most 12 stings, it fills the void with sound in songs. Bar cords are relatively easy as in most 12 string guitars. I reduce the rating because it does not fit into other T5Z Taylor guitar cases. Yep! You need to buy a Dedicated Taylor case, since the T5Z cases are of a slightly narrower dimension. Like wise, other accessories are also of a slightly different dimension, rendering a need to duplicate seemingly identical accessories. Found this Special Edition in Guitar Center when I had to return a faulty Washburn. Don't let the all solid wood purists convince you that anything not all solid isn't worth it. My answer is, it depends. Nowadays, SOME laminate guitars are up there with all solid guitars. Type of construction and wood type/quality matters more than solid vs not solid imo. This thing has a Solid Koa top (all satin which I like better than high gloss), that matters most and it sounds amazing. The layered back and sides for me ensures that when I'm traveling with it and playing around, I will not have to worry as much about it getting damaged as easily. Quick note, I did upgrade the strap button (Chrome to Gold), bridgepins (plastic to ebony with pearl inlay), and tuners (chrome Taylor tuners to gold Gotoh tuners). My suggestion, IF you can find it at a local Guitar Center then definitely pick it up and play it. You may not be able to put it down.Ty, B
I was not looking for a Taylor, but after playing everything I could get my hands on for a few months This KOA guitar was the one that spoke to me. I was looking for a contrast from my very bright and loud Ovation, and this has a sweet buttery tone that is beautiful. I do find it to be much quieter than my other guitars, but it sounds good plugged and unplugged. If you have not seen one in person, it is even better looking than the pictures – just a gorgeous finish. The neck is very comfortable and easy to play, and the size fits nicely. I am mostly loving it but don't want to give it 5 stars for two reasons: First – I am having a heck of a time keeping it in tune. I've been playing it almost every day for almost 6 weeks now, I had a gig Friday night where I had to re-tune 3 times during the night The strings should be plenty broke in by this point. Possibly just more sensitive to environment/temperature then I'm used to, but I'm not sure, the tuners etc. all look to be high quality and setup correctly. Second, the hard case – while it looks nice and provides great protection, it weighs about a thousand pounds and I've already had to hammer the nails back in on the hinges.Dave
I was looking for a special acoustic- one with tone fir weeks that was not a pain to play. I have owned some excellent dreadnought in the past, so high expectations. When I played this at my local Guitar Center. my wife said 'that is amazing. ' She does not impress easily. The tone was angelic, and the playability first rate. I went from ' I want a rosewood dreadnought' to 'this is the one.' The included case is one of the best I have seen. I have played it with amd without usng the built in ES2 system. Works either way. You do give up sone volume versus a dreadnought shape, but you get a way better neck and something special, that will only sound better as it ages. Most of the guitars I had in mind otiginally cost two or three times what this Taylor sells for. I recommend playing the one you buy- go to a store. The two examples Guitar Center had sounded quite different. I obviously bought the better sounding one. While the high gloss example of this model do look sensational, I am good with the satin finish- looks mote natural to me amd feels much better in your hands. Detailed sound analysis: Bass is stronger than expected for the guitar shape. Not as even as some guitars, scooped sound profile. Mids and treble are sweet. Koa sounds warmer over time, but this guitar has a great start in that direction. Sustain is there. Sounds good played soft to medium- if you want to thrash this is not your guitar. Better on fingerstyle then pick. But fine with a pick if you use the right one. The expensive but worth it Elixir strings it comes with are perfect. Thank you Taylor. This same investment in any other new guitar will not get you anything in this league. This guitar is an absolute masterpiece! It plays smooth and has great low and high ranges. My guitar did have an unknown damage upon arrival. I called customer service and spoke with Henry. He worked me through the process of replacement and gave me the option of discounting the guitar. I walked into GC yesterday not knowing I'd walk out with this gorgeous 314ce. I had a 114ce that has served me well and I've had no complaints about. I've been playing for about 20 years and wanted an upgrade. I love the grand auditorium body style as I enjoy playing finger style, but don't want to give up the ability to strum chords and have them sound flat or stale. This style compliments both play styles well. I tried several brands before from Martin to Gibson to Fender and I've found that Taylor tends to build all of their models with the same level of craftsmanship. What I mean is it is easier to feel/hear a difference between cheaper and more expensive models from other brands; Taylor makes excellent quality instruments at every experience/price level. The feel on the neck is smooth and encourages flawless transitions. The spruce top produces bright tones from the narrow body without sacrificing deep, rich low tones. In my opinion, the 314ce stands on par with any other brand's guitar at a similar price point. I would even pick this one over a Martin that's $1000 more. This review will attempt to provide a balanced view of the guitar itself as I have owned this for over a year. Pro: Taylor brightness. Playing open chords gives an exhilarating zing you can feel and hear. The cutaway gives great access to high leads. The Expression pickup system is fabulous and certainly better than any piezo pickup with the "quack". Great on the G B e strings for leads and chords, sparkling, and bright classic Taylor. It is a beautiful piece with the inlays. Con: There are dead zones on the guitar, eg, the E A at high frets. Not normally a problem but now that I am learning the whole fretboard playing other chords up there is dead, and not just a little. I thought it was strings so tried many – it is the guitar. Playing with a capo, chords also a bit more muted not in contact with the nut which helps the sound resonance. Obviously the low end on this one is poor. I also learned it is poor for fingerpicking which I also started recently. My old Yamaha FG-335 has much better tone and overtones. I have had mixed feelings over time which is why I waited to review. The answer to this is I bought a Martin D-28 Modern Deluxe using perks / gifts to bring down the cost to me. Different price range, but everything I wanted. Am I disappointed? Yes to some extent but then again any bright leads can be done on the 314ce. It has been a learning experience. Play the guitar you are going to buy. Play it at every string and fret. Maybe it is the wood (sapele). The whole guitar feels "tight" and constrained. Maybe with time it will relax. Many people love Taylor and I can see why, those who love bright, this is for them. I now need clear, balanced, and playable across the fretboard.Chris G

Hello, the product that I am using is a Taylor412ce-R acoustic guitar. I have been playing guitar for about three years now and I have been enjoying it but now enjoying it to the fullest of playing. I am a recreational player just as many other players, who simply enjoy playing guitar. I play at home, with friends standing or sitting. The things that are great about my guitar is that it is my guitar. Sounds funny but I have been researching for a guitar from the beginning and settled for Taylor Guitar based on them saying "We are building guitar players". Since my purchase my playing has improved so much to the point I almost cried tears of joy because this is a dream of mine. Not to be a great or the greatest guitar player, but to have the greatest love for playing and the instruments (guitars) themselves. Another joy is going into the Sam Ash Store (Lyndhurts, Ohio) and just being there being a part of the family. The people (Jordan, Aaron and Rob (with that smile on his face) encourage me to learn more of the playing and my instructor John Rupert wow challenged me and helped me look into music theory and explore the fun of the the Jam. With the innovation of Taylor guitars, they have kept in mind the none professional people who want a quality guitar and the many options to choose from When I decided my final choice of selection, Rob told me the guitar was being shipped from New York City ( I presumed) this was Monday December 2, 2019 and it arrived Thursday December 5, 2019 and i was so excited at 12:00 P.M. when I called. I went to pick the puchased up and Rob, Aaron and myself were shocked that i had a letter for Sammy of Sam Ash being a Certified of Inspection, Guitars of Distinction. Rob then told me this guitar was kept in the vault, and my reply was "cause they knew this was my guitar". There was nothing that has not been great about my Sam Ash experience. Taylor hit it out of the park with this one. It is a lot of punch packed in a small body. I don't mean to say that this guitar compares in volume and sound to a larger dreadnought because it does not, but it does have a very pleasant sound that is rich and full. My son is also a musician; he thinks that the bass response could have been better, bu aside from that he really liked the guitar sound. The guitar does have a good degree of overtones so that may or may not appeal to some. I like the overtones and would not hesitate recommending this guitar.Jilly Dill

You can read lots of pros and cons online about this model and this is just another perspective, but based on my 50 years of professional guitar performance on solid bodies, hollow bodies, dreadnaughts and salon size steel strings, nylon string and acoustic and electric 12-string. Folks who pan this Taylor apparently would be disappointed that a vintage Gibson 335 doesn't sound exactly like a D-28 and a Les Paul Custom rolled into one. Anyone who researches this model HAS to know it is not a compromise concept, it seeks to take the characteristics of both acoustic and electric guitars and make them available in one instrument. For what it does, I think it does it superbly. I play with bare, short fingernails and no picks so this may influence my tonal perception but this thing through my JBL EON One sounds gorgeous, as good as any hollow jazz box I've had and better than most of them. Solos on the humbucker can get about as much sustain and crunch as a competent player would ask for. And as for playability: this thing is a dream to play. Pulloffs and hammers are effortless, the neck feels perfect with just enough fret height to let me thumb the strings without bottoming them. The hardware is well positioned for the most part with the tone and volume controls unobtrusive as I like them; I don't need hatbox knobs that are bigger than my bathroom faucets. Fit and finish are the usual Taylor standard, which is amazing for a mass produced instrument. All in all, my purchase of this T5-C1 with maple top was one of the best guitar buys I've ever made…and I've made a lot of them. This match feels like one made in heaven and I would encourage those players who are sophisticated enough to appreciate a concept that is fresh and well executed to look closely at the T5-C1 or variants of this model as they are available. I reduce the rating because it does not fit into other T5Z Taylor guitar cases. Yep! You need to buy a Dedicated Taylor case, since the T5Z cases are of a slightly narrower dimension. Like wise, other accessories are also of a slightly different dimension, rendering a need to duplicate seemingly identical accessories. So far, I really love the sound, construction and appointments. I asked my guitar tech to check it out before I picked it up at the store and he played it for 20 minutes. Andy Powers really did a nice job redesigning the 614ce into the V-Class. So far, I've found no flaws, and the factory setup is perfect. The action matches that of any of my electrics and is extremely playable above the 12th fret without any tuning issues. The appointments are as nice or better than that of my 2006 Taylor NC62ce, which is also maple and spruce.Chris
This is a beautiful instrument. The flamed maple back and sides with the brown sugar stain look incredible, the ebony backstrap is a nice touch as well. I'd prefer abalone to ivoroid for the fretboard markers, but other than that I have no visual complaints. The rock maple neck might be the best I have ever played. The re-voicing work Taylor has done has really brought some additional warmth to the Maple tone, however it still sounds bright next to a rosewood guitar, and I find it can sound a little 'thin' in certain applications. The clarity and note-to-note separation are the best I have ever heard though. Excellent sound when plugged in. Overall a great, and highly unique, instrument.Ryan
I have been playing guitar for 60 years. I have an extensive collection of vintage guitars including several Martin, Gibson, etc acoustic and electric guitars. The Taylor Koa K28e is the best guitar that I have ever played. The beauty, action, and sweet tone of this guitar is above my expectations. This is a pricey guitar, but once you strum the strings and hear the melodic sound, you will hear why this guitar is expensive. It is made using the best and finest materials and workmanship. I believe the Taylor K28e has a richer sound than my Martin D-28. It is certainly prettier than the Martin; or any other guitar that I own, Gibson, Rickenbacker, etc.Donal

My goodness. This guitar has such an impressive sound, I'm laying awake waiting to play it again in the morning. I've been a lifelong fan of acoustic rock music and bluegrass styles. My go-to beloved guitar is my Martin D18. My style is crosspicking and arpeggios like Clarence White. I wanted to try something entirely different. The torrified spruce top intrigued me. This treatment is known to give wood an old nutty sound, as if the instrument was decades older. I'm mainly an Americana player that flatpicks over cowboy chords with a quick string-by-string cross-picking style. But, I am an improviser and songwriter, not necessarily a traditionalist. I wanted something different than my beloved D18. I needed a change. The high two strings, when plucked and allowed to ring, will start to vibrato as they fade. This competing, almost tremelo sound, is the source of a bright shimmer when strummed. The low string will thump with bass at first and then fade into a higher overtone. The middle strings maintain a metallic "new string" attack and as the tone quickly fades, the higher overtones take over. This is best described as a buttery gorgeous tone. From my ears, the guitar sounds a little more woody than most Taylors I have played, but it maintains a metallic crisp attack that old guitars don't necessarily have. The EQ is comparable to a rosewood back and sides with an old top. Dare I say a 000-28 might be the closest in tone (without shimmer)? You can choose to dig in hard with a pick and hear glorious overtones, or you can lightly fingerpick and the notes are still deep and alive. I should add that it hits 92 decibels. For perspective a d18 hits 94db and 314ce hits 88 playing those same notes. It's a loud guitar. The neck is a little wider than other Taylors I've played. If you're a Martin person, you'll feel right at home. It does taper at the 12th fret, and a capo works beautifully across the whole situation. And the guitar is a stunner to look at. You'll just absolutely love it.

This guitar has all of the sweet sounds an functions of a T5Z guitar the form of a 12 string guitar. There is little add to this review that I haven't say in my T5Z review, except that it is in a 12 string. I could play for hours with this guitar, that I would not or could not do with other 12 stings. Playing is effortless, however it is dependent upon which songs you are playing. Great for Folk songs and single performers, but not for hard rock or Reggae. As with most 12 stings, it fills the void with sound in songs. Bar cords are relatively easy as in most 12 string guitars. I reduce the rating because it does not fit into other T5Z Taylor guitar cases. Yep! You need to buy a Dedicated Taylor case, since the T5Z cases are of a slightly narrower dimension. Like wise, other accessories are also of a slightly different dimension, rendering a need to duplicate seemingly identical accessories. The sound is amazing. Its one of the easiest guitar i’ve ever played, kind on the fingers when I do bar chords/power chords. For starters the guitar is absolutely beautiful and built to perfection. The aesthetics and fit and finish reflects the price paid for this guitar. The grand concert size is very very comfortable. The 1 3/4" nut is ideal for me and the slightly shorter scale improves playability but it's not too short. On to the tone, I think the mahogany/blackwood combo makes up some of the best guitars in Taylor's entire line up regardless of price. On the grand concert specifically, the 322ce has a good low end response that to me is reminiscent of a Martin 000 or OM, the strong mid range typically expected from mahogany, and still has some of that Taylor brightness as well. It's almost like a mix of a more modern tone and old school warm and woody tone if that makes any sense. The guitar produces great volume (for its size), and great clarity and articulation anywhere on the fretboard which I'm sure the v class bracing plays a part in all of these traits. Although I find that spruce top models are a bit better in these categories, I also find the tonal range to be a bit brighter so it depends what you like and what your style is. The only negative thing I can say is I'm not a huge fan of the ES2 but it seems like most people aren't fans of it so nothing new there. The guitar sounds amazing mic'ed up. But all in all, except for heavy handed strumming, you can do a lot with this guitar. Fingerstyle, light/medium strumming, live gigs, record an album, singer-songwriter stuff, ect and you'll look great doing it all with this gorgeous guitar. A while back I was using a Taylor GS Mini and I got rid of it because the sound was too bright for my taste. I got a Martin and loved it but I slowly fell out of love with it. After a lot of research I decided to pull the trigger on this guitar and let me tell you I am SO GLAD I did. This guitar looks amazing, sounds amazing, and feels amazing. I love jamming with it, and I recently got to record with it and man the sound is incredible. The sound is not as bright as most Taylors I've played like the 214 Koas and such. The tone is a lot warmer than most Taylors but not as deep as a Martin, but man it is truly an amazing guitar. I absolutely love this guitar and it was worth every penny.Ceez

I did alot of research to find the best acoustic for around $600. I wanted a quality name guitar with a good sound that wouldn't break the bank and the Taylor academy 10e was it! I tried Martin's, guilds and a few other brands. I did have the saddle shaved a millimeter or so to bring down the action (a piece of sandpaper is all you need). Came with a nice gig bag. The neck by the nut is not as wide as other acoustics but bigger than an electric, a nice spec. The back is bowed, similar to a guild body. Bottom line, I enjoy it and would buy again.Chris C.
I really like this little guy. Plays really easy and sounds great. My wife is using it while I teach her and I'd say it's exactly how they describe it for beginners. I personally prefer the sound of my mahogany Guild overall, but this one fits in well for certain things I do. If you can afford it as a beginner this guitar is definitely a no brainer.John
The Academy 10e is a great guitar for a novice guitarist. I attempted playing guitar with a hand-me-down guitar once before. The finger pain and poor sound made it difficult for me to stick with it. The pickup selection provides a wide range of sounds to fit the genre you are playing. It has been a joy to play! It is my first Taylor steel string and I haven't been disappointed.
You can read lots of pros and cons online about this model and this is just another perspective, but based on my 50 years of professional guitar performance on solid bodies, hollow bodies, dreadnaughts and salon size steel strings, nylon string and acoustic and electric 12-string. Folks who pan this Taylor apparently would be disappointed that a vintage Gibson 335 doesn't sound exactly like a D-28 and a Les Paul Custom rolled into one. Anyone who researches this model HAS to know it is not a compromise concept, it seeks to take the characteristics of both acoustic and electric guitars and make them available in one instrument. For what it does, I think it does it superbly. I play with bare, short fingernails and no picks so this may influence my tonal perception but this thing through my JBL EON One sounds gorgeous, as good as any hollow jazz box I've had and better than most of them. Solos on the humbucker can get about as much sustain and crunch as a competent player would ask for. And as for playability: this thing is a dream to play. Pulloffs and hammers are effortless, the neck feels perfect with just enough fret height to let me thumb the strings without bottoming them. The hardware is well positioned for the most part with the tone and volume controls unobtrusive as I like them; I don't need hatbox knobs that are bigger than my bathroom faucets. Fit and finish are the usual Taylor standard, which is amazing for a mass produced instrument. All in all, my purchase of this T5-C1 with maple top was one of the best guitar buys I've ever made…and I've made a lot of them. This match feels like one made in heaven and I would encourage those players who are sophisticated enough to appreciate a concept that is fresh and well executed to look closely at the T5-C1 or variants of this model as they are available.
