Can't say enough good things about these strings. The flat wounds allow your fingers to slide smoothly up and doen the string, making your playing more legato and connected. The sound they produce is great and I've actually received compliments on how good they sound. Highly recommend, they're the only bass string I'lll use!
Plus points: low tension. Upright bass sort of sound. Nice sound a little bit brighter than flats. Negatives: thicker than normal strings makes action feel higher than it actually is. A bit rattley – you'll probably need to raise at the bridge. Nickel wraps over steel hex core, string to string they are bright and balanced in feel and tone. I like the EB Slinky 50-105 for down tuning a 4 string bass a half step. They don't feel floppy, they intonate properly and are consistent in great quality. They sound warm and shiny when new then mellow evenly over a long time of use. I've been playing for a long time. You can pay whatever you like for strings and I have always looking for that Holy Grail set of strings. Some last a bit longer. Some other strings also sound good but these just have that sound and feel for me. I play a lot and properly wiped down after playing these strings last a good long time for me but I wouldn't care if I changed sets two to one against DR's or anyone else's string. Two sets of these are no more expensive than DR's and DR's wish they sounded and played like these. Personally I think these last as long as DR's at half the price and I have NEVER had a problem or inconstancy with these strings. I cannot say the same for GHS, DR's, Rotosounds or others. It's just a great set of bass strings for a more than reasonable price!Thump 54
This is the only set of strings I have used where the low B has the same piano string clarity as the rest of the strings, and keeps its timbre for around 3 months average use!. Most 5 string packs (even Sadowsky) low B start off "just OK" and rapidly develop undesirable atonal harmonics, and after 30 days sounds like a detuned E from a Hofner hollow bass from a 60's beatles recording (yuuuuuuuk!). Before playing bass I always used Ernie Ball on my guitars, both electric and acoustic. I own a Gibson Les Paul (wired like Peter Green) Fender Strat, Fender Tele and a Dean Boca 12 String. I also own 2odd name acoustics along with a Fender Jazz, Epiphone Viola bass and a G&L JB 2 Tribute. I have never used EB strings on a bass. Since I needed to replace the strings on my G&L I decided to try the EB bass string and I'm sure glad I did. Easy to play great tone and the price is hard to beat. I will always use EB on my G&L and will consider them on my Fender Jazz if they have flat wounds. I won't on the Epiphone viola has I only use black nylon wrapped flat wounds on it (the way Paul did during the LET IT BE days). Better than expected. Solid tone. Easy to play. Just right. Not too bright, just clean and tight, as a well made set should sound. Lows still great, even at the slightly lighter gauge. Don't get me wrong, they can get plenty bright if you want that. Just that they didn't seem as extra bright as some kinds try to be because they can with all the "super nano ultra special coated infused …but still hand crafted somehow" type stuff. Was never happy with previous sets on my 5 string. With these, I was able to set up with slightly lower action. This alone is worth it on my instrument. Finally, it's the bass it should've always been. Waited way too long to find these. I hope they keep making them. Probably going to order a few extra sets and try to keep a few on hand. As others point out, I'm not sure there's another set with these gauges for 5 strings. To me these are just right in a lot of ways.Person
Overall: Don't pay any attention to the low price these are great strings. Have used Fender 7250's on all kinds of bass guitars they always sound great and feel good. Been using the 8250-5M set for awhile. Wanted to try a lighter gauge. I get more guitar tones out of these. I was concerned I might overpower them since I'd used medium gauge for a couple of years. These are literally perfect on my Modern Player Jazz Bass V and 2 1993 Jazz Plus Vs. I bought the Modern Player new from Musiciansfriend. I think this light set is the set that it had on it. I use a pick, single and double thumb as well as two finger picking techniques. The E and B strings give a nice low end. I have used the previous Fender tape wound round wounds for years (7120s) on several basses. I mainly play fretless so having the round wound gets much more bite than typical flat wounds and the tape keeps the fret boards in great shape. I have an old Alembic fretless, a fretless Fender Precision A/E hollow body w/ a buffer pre-amp for the piezos and a fretted franken-p-bass made from various Fender parts and using active EMGs. All sound great. I mainly play through an Ampeg PF500 head and a Mark Bass 2X10 bottom and have had zero issues with these strings. They get a lot of crisp high end and a phenomenal bottom end possibly also due to the fact all three basses are active. Overall a great product and I would definitely recommend them. I usually change them every 6 months. The only thing negative I have found is that the tape kind of starts to get rough, especially on the fretted p-bass after 5-6 months, but I play a lot. I play in a jazz band as well as sitting in constantly w/ various blues players around St Louis so I have no idea how they would be for slap bass or other types of music. I do constantly get positive feedback as far as the sound of my rig. One of the best things about these strings is they are very quiet sliding on a fretless. I keep a couple extra sets around at all times but have never had one break.Steve
I wanted to try tapewounds as I was going for a McCartney-ish 60s-70s tone on my P-Bass. These are really nice. Smooth and easy on the fingers. Almost feels fretless. I would say they sound like a broken in set of roundwounds with a touch of flatwound tone. They also bend and slide nicely. It makes you want to play solos above the 12th fret. My only complaint, and it's not a defect in the strings in any way, is that you are not grounded. It's something I didn't think about. When you play regular strings you are grounding the bass by touching them. On the tapewound you are insulated from the metal, so if your bass has any buzz when you arent touching the strings, that buzz will still be there when you play with tapewounds.Chris

Tried these on my fretless acoustic bass and they make it sound lot like an upright double bass. I like the soft thump tone. Sometimes you need to be a bit understated and work with percussion rather than sound harsh and overwhelming playing bass-lead. These strings got the classic bass voice. Following a tip-off from Youtuber; 'Scott's Bass Lessons' I decided to give these a go. Apart from the seller's speedy delivery my biggest satisfaction comes from the sheer expansiveness of the sound available from these strings on my bass. They opened up all the 'head tones' I had been striving for along with the playing technique I had been attempting with regular flat wound strings. The internal metalwork combined with the warm muted effect and silky feel of the wound tape has brought a level of performance and enjoyment I previously only dreamed of. Now, with minimal effort (and little discomfort) I am able to bend notes and achieve a 'slap/picked' sound which adds greater depth and colour to the lines I have been wanting to master. Far from the dull 'thump' I had been expecting they spoke with 'zingy' twang like a Rick on full tone and with a crisp and deep bloom with tone full down. I have always used roundwound strings on my Thunderbird but I decided to give these a go as reviews said they are not 'muddy' sounding which is the usual complaint with flatwound strings. Bought these at a local store and tried them last night on my 90's fender jazz plus. Didn't like the sound. The g string was very dull. I do a little popping, and I couldn't hear it. The D string was not much better. The A string was boomy. E and B were fine. I turned knobs all night trying to get a balanced sound. I like punchy bright, and never got this. They produce a higher output and they're brightness lasts noticeably longer than traditional strings. Beautiful tone, very similar to nickels in most respects but with a little low-mid boost and tightened high end. The harmonics really pop on these and the tone sits well in a band setting. You get a nice foundation without getting muddy and you cut through with articulation without being obnoxious. They're nice and smooth like nickel round wounds and have a nice even feel. I've been through a few sets and one problem I've had with them is that the high strings sometimes break, but I have to say it's probably due to my technique (over bending and popping heavily)and how light this particular guage is. I'll be getting a heavier set of the hybrids (45 65 85 105). This has helped when I had this problem in the past. If your a fan of nickel round wounds give them a try.Jutsushine

recently asked curt mangan to make me up a custom set of round core monel strings in 12 string configuration. What a great set of strings. I loved monel strings on my maple bodied guitars. But when i saw they had round core available i ordered a set of 6 string strings. They were so good ,i asked about a 12 string set. They dont offer them as of yet, but rep. said they could make me up a set. i askedfor 10- 48,s round core monels, …What a great set of strings. My guild F 412 has always been a stunner tone wise with monel strings. But the round core monels enhanced that 5 x,s .. I put these on my Gibson J-55 and man what a difference over the phosphor bronze that came stock. I have yet to put them on my '29/'31 L3 or Custom Shop martin 0018, but I really adore the sound on my J-55. The J-55 has an Adirondack top, mahogany back/sides and is essentially a Gibson version of a Martin D-18 without the super boomy low end. I love these strings and they really bring out the natural woody tone of the guitar, which is how it should be in my opinion. After using these I really like the sound, and in a weird way I'm closer to that guitar than I ever was before, the phosphor bronze that were on the guitar were just too bright and metallic, I prefer the natural earthy tones. I put this guitar in different tunings and these strings really open it up there and in standard tuning as well. I can't wait to put these on my Martin 000, I just got it so the strings on it are fresh but they're 80/20s and I really don't like them. You can't go wrong with these strings. I'm going to be using them on my acoustics forever. Just vintage, natural, woody earthy tones and I couldn't be happier!Antonio

I just received these today (3-8-13, not from musicians friend) and was very excited about them. I play in a heavy metal band that tunes to CDCF and my ernie ball super slinky 45s weren't cutting it, so I ordered these. I started putting them on and the tone was great. Once I put on the 4th string (C), it was just about tuned and it snapped. Maybe this was a fluke, but for someone that plays shows, this is completely unacceptable. To have a string designed for low tuning, not be able to tune to C is just ridiculous. No way these would tune any higher. I would avoid these. Sound: great sound. these strings are pretty bright sounding which is what i like, they almost sound like stainless strings, i dont know if they are but in drop c they sound very clear. Features: seem to have a small outer winding so that they are smoother than more rugged strings. Ease of Use: these strings are just like they say super stable so you can drop your action and play fast. Quality: the only problem i have with these strings is that the E string broke on me at the saddle of the bridge. it might have just been a lemon or something but i was in drop C so it didnt have hard tension on it and shouldnt have broken even with heavy picking. this was about two weeks after they were strung up. Value: these strings are expensive but then again theyre hand made so. . .
Really recommend these strings my bass has that twang I've been searching for but without taking anything from the deep basses sounds you want from your bass. When you are stuck in a groove these strings give you so many options to play around with sounds. I bought them for C standard tuning but I've been so happen with them I have learnt half my set list to suit these strings now just for an excuse to use them more. I once used D'Addarios for practice and gigs, then tried the Ernie Ball kind: these have a deeper bottom while having a comparable midrange presence. They're great for rock and roll gigs. The highs have a nice snap to them. Nickel strings are easier on the fingertips than stainless steel, plus the Slinkys last longer than Rotosounds. Okay, These strings are expensive. That's the bad. The reality is that if you have Bad PH sweat that kills your strings before they stretch out, this is a gift from God. Some players complain about losing their tone after 2 weeks with regular strings, but I couldn't play more than 45 minutes before the "dulling" effect would kick in. a freaking 10 I play in a small band that rocks hard. Better than expected. Solid tone. Easy to play. Just right. Not too bright, just clean and tight, as a well made set should sound. Lows still great, even at the slightly lighter gauge. Don't get me wrong, they can get plenty bright if you want that. Just that they didn't seem as extra bright as some kinds try to be because they can with all the "super nano ultra special coated infused …but still hand crafted somehow" type stuff. Was never happy with previous sets on my 5 string. With these, I was able to set up with slightly lower action. This alone is worth it on my instrument. Finally, it's the bass it should've always been. Waited way too long to find these. I hope they keep making them. Probably going to order a few extra sets and try to keep a few on hand. As others point out, I'm not sure there's another set with these gauges for 5 strings. To me these are just right in a lot of ways.Person
Overall: Don't pay any attention to the low price these are great strings. Have used Fender 7250's on all kinds of bass guitars they always sound great and feel good. Years of use have proved quality. I put them on my Jazz bass, my PJ, and my Squire, have used them on Samick, Music man, OLP, and Epiphone basses, all good.Scott
Been using the 8250-5M set for awhile. Wanted to try a lighter gauge. I get more guitar tones out of these. I was concerned I might overpower them since I'd used medium gauge for a couple of years. These are literally perfect on my Modern Player Jazz Bass V and 2 1993 Jazz Plus Vs. I bought the Modern Player new from Musiciansfriend. I think this light set is the set that it had on it. I use a pick, single and double thumb as well as two finger picking techniques. The E and B strings give a nice low end. The A, D and G strings have a growl and bright tone and respond well to picking or plucking. I'll be using these strings for some timegeorgesguitars

Finishing touch for fretless bass. The strings allow quick movement over the fretboard and continuous slides with a unique sound afforded by the nylon wrapping of the metal strings. Silky smooth sound but still plenty of bottom end. Not as trebly as round wound or half-round and easier on the fingers for sliding than nickel flat-wound. First time I have tried Fender strings and I am very impressed. Gauges are good too – 110 in a metal flat-wound was impossible for me to play comfortably but these are great.gre4961
I have used the previous Fender tape wound round wounds for years (7120s) on several basses. I mainly play fretless so having the round wound gets much more bite than typical flat wounds and the tape keeps the fret boards in great shape. I have an old Alembic fretless, a fretless Fender Precision A/E hollow body w/ a buffer pre-amp for the piezos and a fretted franken-p-bass made from various Fender parts and using active EMGs. All sound great. I mainly play through an Ampeg PF500 head and a Mark Bass 2X10 bottom and have had zero issues with these strings. They get a lot of crisp high end and a phenomenal bottom end possibly also due to the fact all three basses are active. Overall a great product and I would definitely recommend them. I usually change them every 6 months. The only thing negative I have found is that the tape kind of starts to get rough, especially on the fretted p-bass after 5-6 months, but I play a lot. I play in a jazz band as well as sitting in constantly w/ various blues players around St Louis so I have no idea how they would be for slap bass or other types of music. I do constantly get positive feedback as far as the sound of my rig. One of the best things about these strings is they are very quiet sliding on a fretless. I keep a couple extra sets around at all times but have never had one break.Steve
I wanted to try tapewounds as I was going for a McCartney-ish 60s-70s tone on my P-Bass. These are really nice. Smooth and easy on the fingers. Almost feels fretless. I would say they sound like a broken in set of roundwounds with a touch of flatwound tone. They also bend and slide nicely. It makes you want to play solos above the 12th fret. My only complaint, and it's not a defect in the strings in any way, is that you are not grounded. It's something I didn't think about. When you play regular strings you are grounding the bass by touching them. On the tapewound you are insulated from the metal, so if your bass has any buzz when you arent touching the strings, that buzz will still be there when you play with tapewounds.Chris

As someone who regularly plays live shows, these strings are my absolute favorite. Super light and easy to bend, and yet not floppy; they produce no unwarranted fret buzz even at extremely low string heights. That being said, they also manage to maintain bright and exciting treble without sacrificing anything significant in the low frequencies. As always, Rotosound has produced a very piano-like set of strings. One of my favorite playing styles is slap bass (incorporating a lot of the Victor Wooten "double thumb"), and these strings make everything easier. I had used Rotosound strings in the past. Flat wound, and did not like them. Just did not care for flat wound strings. I had been using Ernie Ball Slinky but was not really happy with them either. They were hard on the fingers (sharp) and thin sounding I was not getting the "beef" in my sound. I did a nice cleaning of my fretboard and installed the roto bass RB 45's The E string was a bit fatter than I was used to but still very comfortable. The strings were smooth (for round wound) and I was most pleased with the fatter tone overall. Tight clean and no buzz. I believe I will be using these for all future restrings. One minor CON was that for strings marked for long scale the D string was a bit close in length. But that said my Bass, an 80's model Washburn force 4 is a very big and long bass.vicmanjim

Plus points: low tension. Upright bass sort of sound. Nice sound a little bit brighter than flats. Negatives: thicker than normal strings makes action feel higher than it actually is. A bit rattley – you'll probably need to raise at the bridge. They don't have the same conducting effect as steel/nickel strings so you can get some earthing noises when you contact the strings.block.inlays
These string sound great–more sweeter mids than the La Bella Black tapewounds, which was exactly what I wanted. They also feel great. The only issue is that they put out much less volume when on my Fender CS '60 Jazz than any other strings I have tried, including the LA Bella Black Tapes, which I have on another similar Jazz. Not sure if the cause of the low output has anything to do with the copper pprtion being less useful with magnetic pickups, but I expect that is the case. I could get things close to loud enough by raising the p'ups and cranking the volume on my amp, though that solution is less than ideal for my use. No doubt the these strings would work great with the right setup. Just not with mine. I have switched back to the DR Sunbeams I had removed. The increase in output compared to the Copper-Whites is startling.gpinto75

The search is over. I've tried Ernie Ball, Chromes, and Thomastik and each and every one of these had aspects that I did not like. Either there was too much brightness, little balance, too much mids, bad feel of the strings, or overall tone that did not hit the sweet spot. Mind you those are also quality strings, but they do not shine like these Fender 55's. The search is simply over. The balance is just there. You don't have overwhelming frequency peaks with these strings because they sound even across the spectrum. Ernie Ball is sticky feeling and too bright for my style (which is amazing for some people, Im very impressed with Ernie Ball as well it just doesnt suite my style, these are almost tied with Fender), Chromes are peaky in the mids, and Thomastiks are too flabby and 'tubby' sounding. This is my top recommendation for strings and I think roundwound players should give them a shot.Bass hobbyist
These are long scale pure nickel round wound strings. They sound great; warm, mellow, but still well defined. Very old school. I use them on all my basses; long (34) and short (30.5) scale. The only caveat for using them on short scale basses, is that the larger diameter (low E) may not fit in the center hole of the tuning peg. In that case, just be sure to leave enough of the smaller diameter "core" to fit into the center hole, then wind the rest around the peg. Okay, I am a new player and this is my first set of flat wounds. I was wanting to try flat wound strings for a while.I was curious about how they would sound and play. I know professional players who have shared their recommendations with me, and read review from other players on sites such as "Talk Bass". The price was right so I took a shot. I play a Squier Jazz 4 string, and an Ibanez 305 5 string in our band Soylent Dream. When I got my flats I had to wait a couple of days to put them on my Squier. I was too busy playing to change and break 'em in. What I liked when I took them out was that the ends had different colors on them to make them fool proof to put on. The green silk ends were in pretty good shape. When I put them on my 4 string Squier, I was instantly blown away. If you've never played flats before, it's different. The string feel like silk thread under your fingers. The tone and shape of the sound is warmer and richer. Some round wounds feel a little too bright and almost pitchy and cold. This is different. There was no deadening or flatting out in the mids and highs that I thought there might be. I found they were still very crisp. The set I ordered was 105 to 50 and they are stiffer then a round wound. But after a little playing and getting them broken in they hold tune and can be bent and hammered pretty hard. When you first play them you have to get used to how easily your fingers slide, and you can hit on the fret wire and miss your notes getting a buzz. They can take a beating. I am a finger style player, not a picker. The style of music I play is heavy psychedelic rock. Though I am influenced by guys like Steve Harris and Geezer Butler, but am also a big fan of 70's soul and reggae so BB Dickerson and "Family Man" Barret are huge influences too. For me these flats are amazing. The sound fits my style of playing and I have to say, I want to try these on my 5 string.

I started using these strings when I got into using an 8 string with my metal band.They have a very good tone and surprisingly have kept it longer than a lot of strings I have used over the years.It's nice to be able to get a matched set of strings,used to have to go out and buy a 4 string set and then buy single guitar strings to finish the set.
