Purple Fender Bass Guitar For Sale (Jan 2023 Update)

Mine came with a warped neck, body is super soft and easily dings,and finish as you would expect is consistent with most low cost cost Asian basses. Electronics also. Required a lengthy setup but still could not optimize with bad neck. There are better options in a beginner bass. The Rondo SX and the lower end Ibanez lefty basses are just two examples.kraigster414

I bought this for my son for Christmas. He is a self taught instrument player. He was overjoyed with this package. He loved the look of the guitar and all of the extras that it came with. He said it was a definite upgrade from his old guitar that he learned on.Deoanna

After the initial COVID lockdown I landed a gig where I had to have a 5 string bass. So like a red blooded American I took my cash down to the local GC store to buy a fender 5 string American jazz. There wasn't any. I looked for an Ibenez. There wasn't any. I looked for anything and we'll there wasn't any. As the date grew near for our first show, I happened in and they had this one. I was disappointed that this was all there was, but out of desperation, I bought it thinking I would trade it once something I wanted became available. It took me about two months and 10 gigs later when I realized I love this thing. 9 months in and I don't know how many dates later, I wouldn't want to live without it. It plays awesome after a quick and minor setup on the action. The tone is big on the bottom and the mids and highs are as shapable as you want. It is a dream to play and guess what, when I finally got to put my hands on the fender I wanted, I didn't want it anymore. This bass is very much like the high end Ibenez basses. Probably too much for Ibenez's liking actually. I run through a 800w mark bass head with a 2×10 cab and a 1×15 cab. It sounds incredible. The big thing for me is when I run through my amp using the direct out in bypass, it sounds amazing. It is like having a sans amp in the bass. The electrics are that good. I have gotten tons of compliments on the tone and questions about how I got it. I literally just plugged it in. Also I can play it all night and even though it is a five, I am less fatigued then when I play the four fender American jazz I already own. The string spacing and scale I believe is responsible for that. If you are serious about playing a 5 string, at any level, then this bass is one you should look at. I am not super crazy about the esthetics but I get a surprising amount of complements on it. So if that is your thing then rock on I guess. I am getting over the fact that I was a fender snob. My one only bass for the past 20 years has been a Ibanez SR405 (2001 year model). I feel like I've purchased a big upgrade with this Jackson X Series Spectra. In comparison to the Ibanez, the Jackson's neck is fatter, lower fret sizes are slightly wider and the string spacing is slightly wider. The playability is a lot smoother for my larger fingers/hands. The pickups and active EQ systems are powerful. Need to have some amp/di box control to contain the powerful output when in smaller venues. I use the passive pickup control when in smaller venues and small churches. I feel that what sets this apart from other basses I've tried is how great it sounds to play the d and g strings as well as going above the 12th fret. The stock strings (D'Addario) sound really pretty when playing the higher octaves. The Elixir strings I'm currently using give the B string a BIG SMOOTH THUMP. For those worried about setup out of the box, I live in high altitude. Setup post manufacturer is usually a must because of that. I have been able to get fairly low action without fret buzz after casually messing with adjustments.Zach

This is my second Ray 34. I preform live and do records so a good bass that sounds great and holds tuning is key. This meets every requirement I need. The tone is spot on for the Hard Rock I play. Sounds great in Pro Tools with no added effects other than a simple EQ. The finish looks great. I would definitely say if you want a Stingray bass and can not afford one get a Ray 34. Overall great looks and sound, but some quality issues from the Fender Mexico factory (not Andertons' fault): – First bass had very clear weird uneven blemish under the varnish on the sunburst body. Not awful, but if I was in-store I would never have chosen that particular item. Returned and swapped by Andertons, no quibbles. Second bass arrived. Overall happy, sounds great, but still a few issues with quality control and design. – Control plate was missing 2 screws and was moving around – how does that get through Fender quality control? Replacement screws sent free of charge by Andertons. – Nut has not been slotted correctly – high G must have been passed through a machine and slipped, string is clearly a couple of mm too close to fretboard edge and you can see the failed first pass. Doesn't really affect playability, but is annoying and I will get it corrected at some point. Again, points to poor quality control. – Fretboard (Pau Ferro) is really thin – on the Player series, at least. Neck fret dot markers in white are half over the mid-dark fretboard, half over the light maple neck. Very hard to see in low light levels. OK, so they're just an indicator for position, but the design isn't great. So overall, the bass sounds great and Andertons service was very good. I had a 50s reissue Precision, but honestly the neck was just too thick for my liking after years of playing Jazz basses. Honestly, it felt thicker than the neck on my Yamaha 5-string. So, I picked this bass up after always dancing around getting what would be considered a more standard P-Bass. I have a 70s Jazz with a ton of modifications, I've had quite a few other brands of basses, but I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I ordered this a few weeks ago, and have been very pleasantly surprised. The action was pretty good out of the box. I adjusted it a bit, made a few tiny tweaks to the intonation, and now it's super smooth. And, on the pickups, let me say it's a great sounding bass. Pickups are clear, bass sounds great. I play through a little Ampeg Micro cabinet. Earlier this week, I bought some Flats to throw on it (because that's what you do with a P-bass, right?) and now it's quickly becoming one of my favorite instruments to jam with. It really cuts through the mix when playing in a group. I see why folks really love the sound of a precision. My Jazz still has it's place, but man, I really like the sound of this bass. The Player P is a great value for what you get. I've never owned an older MIM, but I research the heck out of pretty much any purchase I make, and it looks like Fender really stepped it up with this rendition of their MIM Precision basses. Good tone out of the box, no discernible pickup noise, good action, a beautiful neck, and a Tidepool Blue finish that just shines and shines.Dennis F

Overall I love it, Great tone. Great sustain. Plays nice. The things I would change: The color isn't quite the purple in the images on the web site. It's much darker and has a reddish tint. I would have preferred it match the ad. The main complaint is balance. The Ibanez it's replacing was perfectly balanced. With no hands on the base, it didn't shift position. This one is neck-heavy and wants to move as soon as I let go of it, so I have to prop it somehow when I'm changing charts. Minor complaints would be what I consider slightly odd placement of the cable jack and the location of the bottom strap post. None of these are deal breakers, but they are areas where there could be improvement.Stone

I picked this up in October as my first bass, and have been training many hours a day. I've been playing with some serious pros (the kind with metal records on the wall) and through their kindness and the internet am getting half decent. First, it's a gorgeous bass. The color is darker than the pictures, and is subtle and really pretty. It gets a lot of admiration. It's also heavy, so have a good padded strap of 3" or even more if your shoulders fit a wider strap. Invest in strap locks – just the little rubber washers are fine, but mine slipped out of a strap keyhole while picking it up before I got a locking strap. It's very well balanced and falls perfectly into place standing up, and fits well sitting. Out of the box, intonation was good but the action was fairly high although still playable. That was very easy to fix and spending a bit of time being taught how to properly set it up was invaluable. I've been through 3 sets of different new strings so far, and all sound great. I currently have a set of DR pink neons on because my wife really likes the look – which does get a lot of positive comments. I couldn't stand the sound of the DR neons E at first, but it got good after several hours of playing. The bridge is a bit different than most videos will show you, but it's incredibly easy to adjust – just have a piece of 1/4" dowel and a small hammer to knock the saddles into place – there's no screw adjustment for the intonation, just gently push the saddles into the right place and lock them down. This bass sounds great with flats and rounds and coated strings – although as I mentioned above, the coated DR neon E was nasty until it broke in after a couple of hours. There's tremendous adjustability between the 3 band active EQ and mixing the pickups. I do wish there was a passive bypass – that should have been possible since the EMG pickups themselves are passive pickups. Maybe an easy modification.Peter H

The bass that I actually bought is this gorgeous purple-burst finished model, and the finish is every bit in keeping with all of it's other fine features. The rest of the comments are repeated here*** ________________________________________________________________________________ I now own 5 solid body neck-throughs: Two 4003's, two Warwicks, and this Schector, which just arrived yesterday. I don't think I'm a good enough expert to sit and analyze each bass's pros and cons, and then try them out with a bunch of different amp/speaker combinations. That's what they pay the guys at Bass Player for. All I can say is I haven't stopped grinning about this Studio-4 since I opened the box. Easy playability, excellent build quality, sexy looks, and a good, loud, punchy sound. What's not to like ? I will say this: The EQ knobs don't do a wide range of tone-shifting. The EMG pickups are very bright, modern-sounding, and with the stock Ernie Ball RW strings, that's exactly what I wanted. Plenty of glass up top, and a bit (maybe a bit too much) at the bottom. If you're looking for P-bass thud-thud Motown sound, my first thought is this may not be your best bet, although with flatwounds it would probably be within dial-able range on your rig. The rest is all good, and this would make a great bass for a student, a working bassist or the dedicated hack (that's me). If you're a world-famous bass soloist, this may not necessarily be the axe you'd take the stage with, but I'm betting you'd spend lots of time practicing your moves on it. It will keep up. One more thing. It arrived set up as nicely as I've ever seen, right out of the box.doc

I absolutely love this bass. I've been switching between a MiM Fender Jazz bass and a MiM Precision for a while, and this bass really is a Swiss Army knife. The active preamp is very usable, and you can get sounds that approach MusicMan basses, to the full thump of a traditional P, to the thin burpy sound of a traditional J bridge, and everywhere in between. I personally like to use it with the mids flat, the treble just slightly boosted, the bass turned up to about a 7/10, with just a little bit of the bridge J pickup rolled in. It gives you a huge bottom end sound with enough clarity that you can still cut through the mix. And this bass is LOUD. Without the active preamp engaged, you get a good, normal passive bass sound. There is no passive tone control (the only real negative for me, personally), so without the preamp engaged, it sounds like the normal tone control is turned all the way up. Not a bad thing, but not super versatile. However, once the preamp is engaged, you get a huge volume boost, and tonal options for days. Also, the neck just feels perfect. I'm usually a roasted maple kinda guy, but the satin finish combined with the rolled fingerboard edges really make this bass an absolute joy to play. It probably has my favorite neck I've played on a Fender. Other than the lack of a passive tone control, the only other negative is that this bass is a little on the heavy side. It definitely feels heavier than my ash body Jazz bass, and probably about on par with my Vintera P Bass. I would have liked to have seen it come in a little lighter, but it's definitely not a deal breaker.Slappin' Da Byass

If you are tired of searching for a professional sound buy this bass. I hated the mim fender deluxe model, but fender did something special with this bass. It has a clear piano like quality to it. My two sire basses sound like toys up against it. I have wasted so much money on lesser basses. I'm just trying to help my fellow bass players out there. Everyone says that I sound good playing my other basses, but there are certain ugly overtones that I don't want to hear in my bass. This bass doesn't have those unwanted frequencies, it is voiced beautifully. I know that most of tone is in the fingers, but at the end of the day you know what you want to hear. If you are an audiophile this is the bass for you. I have spent weeks demoing this bass and no matter what amp you run it through it sounds good. I played it at a church last week and all I can say is it was nasty. My wife ordered mine yesterday for my birthday and it's suppose to arrive today, fingers crossed.Eric

I've owned and played bass guitars for 30 years now and I've owned several fender basses and the myriad clones out there of the J and P basses. That history and background left me with a bias against fender and an eye for other "better" production guitars like the Stingray which is my other go-to bass. That being said, I am blown away by this bass. It is a SOLID instrument with no flaws or blemishes that I can detect. It came from the factory with an almost perfect setup. I had to make a minor intonation adjustment on the low B and E strings but the string height, pickup height, and neck position were perfect. Fender's Ultra Noiseless pickups (a stacked humbucker really) sound great in passive mode emphasizing a fat bottom end and the tone nob adds a good bit of mids. The highs are kinda meh for me but the active switch takes care of that and I can get as bright as I want. The 18v active preamp provides a lot of room to boost or cut low, mid, and high frequencies to get just about any sounds I want (I still prefer my Sting Ray if I want to get real funky). This is about the best sounding 5-string I've had. Most 5-strings sounds great as 4-strings and SUPER muddy when you work the low-b string but this bass brings it out without too much mud.T. DeWees

I bought this base back in April 2022. It sounds great and plays great. However, the front pickup recently quit all together. After a tech looked at it, it was discovered that it was a bad front pickup. It was beyond the store warranty, so I took it up with fender. After 2 weeks of going back and forth between them and the store that I bought it at, it was determined that fender would send the pickup to the technician if my choice and they would fix it. But it would take 30 days because they send it directly from the manufacturer. Which still boggles my mind, because the slowest mail would be less than a week? So my opinion of fender customer service has dropped considerably. A working musician doesn't have 30 days to do without their instrument. This is unacceptable. I decided to purchase the pickup myself. I can get it in the mail in 2 days, and put it in myself. However this is a great base if you happen to get one with good parts in itJerry

Amazing bass. Unlimited variety of sounds with the 7 options of pick-up configuration. Great color. Very unique styling. Comfortable. Seems a tiny bit top heavy to me. Otherwise, fabulous choice. Everyone is jealous and nobody else has one! 🙂ababvr

I was a little skeptical at first, since this Mexican made bass carries an American price tag. However, after a few minutes of playing, that skepticism was dispelled. I have been playing bass for 25 years, over half semi-professionally. I own American Standard Jazz and Precision basses, and this goes toe to toe with them. I love the nitrocellulose finish! I don't really buy into the argument that it sounds better because the wood "breathes better", but it definitely feels better than the typical polyurethane on the American Standard that kind of sticks to you arm a little. The pickups are American made Pure Vintage 64, and while they have a lower output than the Fralins I added to my American Standard, I really like the softer vintage tone. I've put Leo Quan bridges on my other basses, and while this basic vintage style bridge doesn't have near the sustain, it seems to fit with the tone. I was not a fan of the road worn finishes at first, but this bass is just really looks cool. A tremendous amount of work goes into recreating the worn look, and I can appreciate that now. If you are skeptical about this bass like I was, do yourself a favor and check it out.Nick

Semi-pro bassist, 45 years playing. Anyone that's had a chance to spend some real time on a Roadworn bass beyond noodling around for 5 minutes at Guitar Center around already knows how good they feel… very playable. They have a broken-in feel that I can't readily define, just "that thing" that makes a person want to play more and stretch themselves further musically. I presently have around 20 basses in my stable, including American Fender Jazzes, Precisions (one from as far back as '71), Gibson T-Bird, Ric 4003W, etc, but these days I play out with two basses, the RW Precision and this Flea RW Jazz. Mine clocks in at precisely 9lbs, a great weight for a Jazz, and again it feels like a bass that's seen a million notes. A really cool functional difference between this Jazz and most other Jazzes is the stacked knobs, each with independent tone control. As an all-American Fender player for decades, I can't readily speak to other Mexican-made Fenders but I can say with no uncertainty that these Mexican jewels show off the best in their craftsmanship, end of story. And I'm tired of hearing some naysayers ask why you pay $400 more than a Mexican built Standard when "all they do is take a hammer to a new one"… this demonstrates an incredibly short-sighted view and fails to properly recognize and account for the painstaking additional effort, time, and cost involved in creating these basses.Dr. Random

The Fender “Flea” Jazz Bass is an amazing instrument! Very lightweight, and true to form of the Fender Jazz Bass, the neck profile is perfect! Very thin and fast! The pickups sound great and the stack knob configuration is a perfect addition to give this Bass it’s vintage feel and vintage look! From the vintage look of the tuners to the bridge this Bass is pattered exactly after Flea’s early 1960’s Jazz Bass! The tone is nice and punchy just as a J Bass should be! The balance of this particular Bass is perfect! It hangs on the neck and shoulder like a feather! I can easily do a four hour gig with the Fender Flea Jazz Bass! what a great bass! It's beautiful, light, and sonically versatile. the different pickup modes have 3 radically different tones which makes this bass right for lots of situations. I've seen some reviews that mentioned so issues with some fret roughness but mine showed up in perfect condition. I couldn't be happier with the bass. I also want to mention the customer service. I used the chat feature to confirm whether this bass came with a bag or case. the agent let me know that it does not but pointed me to the bundle that includes the bag and they set me up with a price I could not pass up. once I completed the purchase the item was shipped within 90 minutes. This is a great short scale bass. It is a quality instrument. The finish is excellent. Playability straight out of the box was very good. Really good guitar for nirvana type music. Only issue is that you need to set it up for it to be playable but once it's set up it's a great instrument. Pickups are pretty articulate but not to bright either just perfectly balanced. If you get one I recommend to lock the bridge down to improve its tuning stability and sustain. Note it DOES NOT sound like a kc style mustang, it has its own sort of sound to it. Fretboard is pretty nice same with the low radius which I prefer. Overall it's one of my favorite guitars I've ever bought and I cannot recommend it enough if you play grunge and nirvana music.Preston

This bass comes with a very generic sounding music man pick up. Flea does not use this pick up live. He strictly uses lane poor legacy pick ups in his basses, wether it being the modulus originals from years past or the newer jazz bass models he has been sporting on stage. This bass sounds like a standard music man stingray with extra output due to the obp1 preamp. This bass does not growl and crackle nor have the articulation as fleas actual jazz bass models equipped with the lane poor legacy pickups. If you dig music man tone this bass will be fine, but that's what buying a music man is for. A flea signature should give his tone and this just doesn't cut compared to his actual jazz basses or the iconic modulus lane poor tone.Mark

Overall: This is a really well constructed bass with swamp ash body,active pickups,coil splitting option and bladed selector similar to a Stratocaster. The body takes some getting used to.Mine weighs in at 12.5 lbs but it's well balanced with no neck dive .The neck as well takes a little getting used to.It's 45 mm like most other 5 strings.Not as wide as a Fender but wider spacing than Ibanez.The profile on the neck is pretty thick also but the frets are well set and there is no buzzing up and down the board.As far as tone it's very versatile.Really a 2 pickup bass when you factor in the coil splitting.It has excellent low end but can get really detailed with the notes popping out for solo work.All in all this bass is very well put together,has excellent components including a very hefty and stable bridge and stays in tune well.After you get used to the neck width and the weight it will really grow on you.I expect these to really go up in price in the future.Raul

I bought this base back in April 2022. It sounds great and plays great. However, the front pickup recently quit all together. After a tech looked at it, it was discovered that it was a bad front pickup. It was beyond the store warranty, so I took it up with fender. After 2 weeks of going back and forth between them and the store that I bought it at, it was determined that fender would send the pickup to the technician if my choice and they would fix it. But it would take 30 days because they send it directly from the manufacturer. Which still boggles my mind, because the slowest mail would be less than a week? So my opinion of fender customer service has dropped considerably. A working musician doesn't have 30 days to do without their instrument. This is unacceptable. I decided to purchase the pickup myself. I can get it in the mail in 2 days, and put it in myself. However this is a great base if you happen to get one with good parts in itJerry

great warm fender cleans. reverb is excellent. gain channels suprisingly good. plenty of volume. well built. simple to use. dont use pedals anymore but i hear its a good platform. i got it to plug straight in and play. when your pressed for time and dont have hours a day to scree around with the levels this will give you great tone fast with no hassle dialing it in. great valuethe cheese

Great Fender tube sound, spring reverb. Loud, bright clean tones, plenty of headroom. 2 adjustable levels of gain/distortion. 2 12in Celestion speakers. Pine cabinet like the old twins, lighter better sound. Takes pedals like delays power amp in/preamp out. The choice of lots of pros for good reason. Absolutely love this amp.Jon
