This is PRS's version of a vintage style Gibson Les Paul. John Mayer dubs it "the best new guitar I've played in years". I say it is the best guitar I've played. It is the ultimate Les Paul. My band was in awe of it's tone. I'm surprised by how noticeably better the tone is than my 2015 PRS Custom 22 Stoptail. I thought the CU22 was amazing, but the 594 blows it away. I've owned 3 Les Pauls: 1973 Custom, 1991 Standard, and 2017 Standard HP. The PRS 594 beats them all in tone, playability, tuning and comfort. The only thing PRS doesn't have is the cool looking Gibson headstock, but that design is why Gibson's dont stay in tune.Raz
I tried two of the PRS 509s. I was disappointed because in my opinion the pickups were not as defined as my PRS 513s. First the 509 does not have heavy humbucker as does the 513. BEcause I perform such a variety of music I need Single, Clean, and Heavy. Second the neck clean humbucker was not as clear as my 513's. It seemed a little darker. The 509 bridge clean humbucker seemed not to have the drive the 513 has. Third. And here is the kicker with the 509. In Pseudo Single Coil Tap Mode it is NOT truly single coil mode. You see there is some coil sharing from the other bobbin to keep the volume from dropping to noticeably. Therefore, the sound is not a single coil sound. Fourth. Also, another sticky point. With the switch position in bridge and middle pickup you do get that Strat quacking sound however with the neck and middle switch position you don't really get that quack like the 513 does. I has to do with which bobbin is being used as the main bobbin. With the 513 there is truly single coil mode because only one bobbin is activated. I did buy one of the 509s. I thought I could get used to it or set it up different. I am still sorry I did. I would rather buy another 513. I also have a PRS Custom 24-08.(with the 498 pickups). I has to do with which bobbin is being used as the main bobbin. With the 513 there is truly single coil mode because only one bobbin is activated. I did buy one of the 509s. Overall: Like someone else said, right now, this is my favorite. I'm quick to pick it up and play without plugging it in. Plugged in it has an awesome tonal range. Using in my DAW with LogicPro it's really easy to get quiet, noiseless tones but still the crunch and sting when you want. The neck fits my hand perfectly. Overall, the quality is what you would expect. One issue to be aware of. Could be my clumsiness, but I've noticed that small chips have developed on the bottom edge where it rests in my guitar stand. Stand has rubber over the prongs but I still I wish the finish was heavier or maybe clear coated somehow over the antique finish. All i all I would buy it again.
Been playing for 20 years and I've had my fair share of instruments. This guitar is a cut above many in its price point. USA built, solid construction and rings like a bell. No it's not a core model that looks fancy but, you get all the goods of a PRS. Pickups in this are not really suited for metal out of the box but, you can go old school and boost it and get that saturated goodness. But if your thing is rock, hard rock, blues, country etc this guitar will be awesome in your arsenal. I was scared that the neck would be thin but when I opened the bag and grabbed the guitar, I was greeted with a full neck that fits like glove in my hand. Thin necks aren't my thing and never have been. However says you need a slim neck to play fast is wrong it only makes it a bit easier for some hand types. Bottom line, great guitar, great sound and amazing build quality. Grab one!Brian B
I had 10 guitars of varying build quality prior to buying this PRS. Everything from high end squires to Mexican Fenders and USA G&Ls. This guitar blew me away. The fit and finish are superb. Every tone is usable, it's resonant, it looks and plays like a dream. I ended up selling all but one G&L v12 and this Vela. Then I bought a few "key guitars" that I knew I'd like to have in the long run based on previously owned instruments. I snagged a Pro II Strat, a G&L ASAT, and a Relish that I got on sale here at Sweetwater. I now have only five guitars, but I am thrilled with them all. This swap was all due to playing a truly great guitar, this Vela, and remembering that quality matters. If you love a guitar you'll play it more and enjoy the experience in a slightly different way. The Vela is my number one. It's fantastic. Light, great sounds from each pickup, and neck is a joy to play. Love it, and now I love them all. Thanks for the help Jason Filloramo.

This guitar was a surprise. Great playability, the fret finish and rounded edges on the neck are super smooth making are very comfortable neck to hold and play. Fret access all the way to the 24th fret is very impressive. Many 24 fret guitars aren't very accessible and don't play clearly up high. but it's effortless and still feels like you can go further if added more frets. Versatile guitar with a wide array of tones available, from coil tap Stratocaster like tones to the rich deep bark you'd come to expect from a Les Paul. Absolutely love this guitar. This was my first PRS guitar purchase. I purchased it based on the reputation of the company and reviews I found online. I ordered the violin finish. When I received the guitar and laid my eyes on it I was seriously disappointed. The flame maple top was horrible. The upper half had a much less noticeable flame to it and the lower half while partially nicely flamed it was completely missing flame and was bare grain around the switches. I showed it to a couple of friends who own PRS s2 guitars and they were shocked it was allowed to leave the factory like that. The only reason I rated it a 2 star and not 1 was because it only needed a light setup to be playable but even then the sharp fret ends will need some attention. I would not recommend this guitar to a friend, especially with the price tag.Derek
I purchased this S2 Custom 24 from American Music Supply a music dealer in my personal opinion is outstanding to deal with! I have made many purchases from AMS they are fantastic. As a Tele player who was in need of a humbucking guitar, do to a working cover band. I purchased this PRS because I didn't want a bottom line made in China guitar for $699 but felt someplace in the middle would get me something decent. This guitar is WAY over priced for what it is! The neck, for me was extremely uncomfortable, wide thin. The hardware is all made over seas and extremely cheap. I received the guitar, played it for about 30 minutes. The action was high and there was a buzz coming from the bridge. After 40 years of playing I know a poorly made guitar when I put it in my hands. The pick-ups sounded ok but lack clarity. PRS can do better! The color and finish was gorgeous! PRS is great at that. But C'mon Paul, give us something better for $1699! That's a lot of money for some people! I can see these S2's flooding the re-sale market for about $750 in one or two years, just like the MIM Fenders. Which re-sale value just stinks! I had two high end PRS's the P22 for $3600 brand new I sold it for $1600. I had a 10 Top 594 semi Hollow body for $4100 which I sold for $2000. I lost my shirt on those guitar because the market is flooded with PRS's that wont sell. I was lucky enough to send this one back and NOT have to re-sell it. Thank-God! At $1699 buy a used core PRS model or a USA Fender its still the best bang for your buck. Or a Studio USA Gibson Les Paul. I believe PRS makes great guitars and now they are trying to get a little above the K-Mart guitar market. It needs better pickups and better hardware. Oh…the locking tuners were good! Absolutely gorgeous sounding and looking guitar. but i can't find a place for it in the heavy music i record, as hard as i've tried, so it ends up just being a super-expensive collectible for me, and i don't collect things lol. this baby deserves an owner who will play it! it's in almost perfect condition, except for a barely discernible ding on the headstock, see last pic, which is hard to even take a pic of. ohsc included of course.

Overall: This guitar looks incredible. However, with the low output pickups, the sound starts to cut out unless you have the volume dimed. Also, any high notes played beyond the 12th fret sustain about 7 seconds. This is VERY disappointing. I have cheap guitars that preform better. For $4,200 dollars, I did expect perfection. Overall: First off I'd like to respond to the previous reviewer. He stated that there was zero sustain with the 594. The specs state that the pickups are LT which means Low Turn. The guitar was built for the vintage gang out there and these particular pickups are not high output but that's nothing that a boost pedal won't remedy. Had the previous reviewer researched this instrument, he would have found that the pickups excel in clarity and definately have the vintage vibe. What Paul was trying to do was make an instrument that would have followed the progression of a Les Paul. Also if the reviewer wanted a guitar for anything including hard rock and metal, he should have picked up the Custom 22 or 24. With that being said, I love this model and have had one for several years. I will also be buying another one but a single cut this time in March. If you want quality buy a PRS or Music Man. You just can't go wrong with PRS..Matt

This guitar is awesome. I was actually really surprised right out of the box how playable it was. Feel like usually when you get a new guitar you have to get it set up to really see it shine, but this thing right away is super playable. Was definitely surprised how light this thing was also, its crazy, it looks like it'd be heavy but its lighter than even my strat. (this could be a good or bad thing depending on what you want imo). It reminds me a lot of my Les Paul, but the reliability of it staying in tune right away along with it being WAY lighter has definitely impressed me. In my own personal opinion it has taken all the good things about a les paul classic and done them better. Similar price, similar tones, but doesnt have those typical gibson issues that those guitars usually come with. Highly recommend, it sounds great, plays great, and feels great. Only complaint is that they should release some better finishes. But otherwise, who cares, its awesome.Graham

Overall: First off I'd like to respond to the previous reviewer. He stated that there was zero sustain with the 594. The specs state that the pickups are LT which means Low Turn. The guitar was built for the vintage gang out there and these particular pickups are not high output but that's nothing that a boost pedal won't remedy. Had the previous reviewer researched this instrument, he would have found that the pickups excel in clarity and definately have the vintage vibe. What Paul was trying to do was make an instrument that would have followed the progression of a Les Paul. Also if the reviewer wanted a guitar for anything including hard rock and metal, he should have picked up the Custom 22 or 24. With that being said, I love this model and have had one for several years. I will also be buying another one but a single cut this time in March. If you want quality buy a PRS or Music Man. You just can't go wrong with PRS..Matt
Overall: I've had several PRS guitars, from core Custom 24s to SE's to S2's. This example is an S2 McCarty 594. It feels nice, looks nice and plays nice. That's about the extent of it. It doesn't do anything to excite the senses. I have a Prestige Heritage Standard that just begs to be played and is inspiring. These guitars, while solid, are just kind of "meh". There is one thread that I find runs through most, if not all PRS guitars I've tried; I absolutely do not like PRS pickups. The ones in this McCarty are very dull, like a blanket has been thrown over them. No clarity, they're just "there". In summary, these are good guitars, but you'd really need to spend some additional money to make them great. Whether or not you want to go down that road is, of course, up to you. But no matter what, zZounds is awesome, and they are my go-to retailer. Very easy to deal with.Keith
Overall: Great guitar for every sound youre looking for. I love the width of the neck. If you have shorter fingers I wouldn't recommend this guitar because of the neck is a little thicker. The sound and playability of this guitar is amazing. Vintage les paul feel but with a slightly newer modern sound. Its my favorite guitar out of all the guitars I own.

Sad to see it go, but i just don't play it enough to justify keeping it. this guitar is in great condition! i bought it new and have been the only owner for the past couple of years. it does have a few blemishes- there's two knocks on the back of the fretboard that i put in the photographs and a dent or two on the headstock that are also on the photos. the pickups do have a couple blemishes where the strings have hit them over the years (also pictured) and some buckle rash on the finish on the back of the body, which is difficult to capture in photographs because the guitar reflects light so well. overall, in great condition. it has never been dropped and has always had humidipacks in the case of the guitar. it does come with a hardshell case that has been road-worn but is still in great and working condition. this guitar sounds excellent and would be a great addition to any guitar collection. it was the only electric guitar i used for years! i wish i played it enough to keep it.

This is PRS's version of a vintage style Gibson Les Paul. John Mayer dubs it "the best new guitar I've played in years". I say it is the best guitar I've played. It is the ultimate Les Paul. My band was in awe of it's tone. I'm surprised by how noticeably better the tone is than my 2015 PRS Custom 22 Stoptail. I thought the CU22 was amazing, but the 594 blows it away. I've owned 3 Les Pauls: 1973 Custom, 1991 Standard, and 2017 Standard HP. The PRS 594 beats them all in tone, playability, tuning and comfort. The only thing PRS doesn't have is the cool looking Gibson headstock, but that design is why Gibson's dont stay in tune.Raz
I tried two of the PRS 509s. I was disappointed because in my opinion the pickups were not as defined as my PRS 513s. First the 509 does not have heavy humbucker as does the 513. BEcause I perform such a variety of music I need Single, Clean, and Heavy. Second the neck clean humbucker was not as clear as my 513's. It seemed a little darker. The 509 bridge clean humbucker seemed not to have the drive the 513 has. Third. And here is the kicker with the 509. In Pseudo Single Coil Tap Mode it is NOT truly single coil mode. You see there is some coil sharing from the other bobbin to keep the volume from dropping to noticeably. Therefore, the sound is not a single coil sound. Fourth. Also, another sticky point. With the switch position in bridge and middle pickup you do get that Strat quacking sound however with the neck and middle switch position you don't really get that quack like the 513 does. I has to do with which bobbin is being used as the main bobbin. With the 513 there is truly single coil mode because only one bobbin is activated. I did buy one of the 509s. I thought I could get used to it or set it up different. I am still sorry I did. I would rather buy another 513. I also have a PRS Custom 24-08.(with the 498 pickups). Now that sounds great because in single coil mode they really only activate the one coil. All that being said it might be just right for some guitarists.prs32164

This guitar has the ability to sound like a Strat, Les Paul, and a ES335 style guitars all in one unit.. I have this guitar as well as a PRS Special 22. The guitar is versatile, explains why so many awesome players have been spotted playing one the past few years. 5815 LT pups are glorious and likely my favorite pups of this style ever made.. I have a Hollowbody II Artist in red with insanely flamed maple and the piezo system. Believe it or not, I got it on sale for a mere 5-grand. Like all upper end PRS's, the setup was fantastic as is the workmanship and the gorgeous wood. Also, no binding, which is annoying at this price point as an owner of many custom shop Gibson's. That being said, this is, without a doubt, my best and favorite guitar. Fun to play, sounds decent unplugged, with piezo can sound acoustic amplified, or can sound thrash metal with humbuckers. Can do anything, and does it well. If I had only one guitar, this would be it. It ends up in my hands when I am trying to figure out a riff, or when I am trying to find a particular tone and I don't know where to start. I also enjoy the shorter scale which makes me feel like I am a better player than I really am. Anyway, at the price, this guitar should be something memorable, and it is. I think that is why most "employee guitars" at PRS end up being Hollowbody II's. That is saying something right there.brgibson

Selling my prs 594. pretty much flawless shape, i can t find anything to nitpick about it and i try to be really careful when putting these things up. i mean it, it s mint but i m paranoid so i ll label excellent to be super safe. it s not a 10 top, but it probably should be. i remember when buying this they had a 10 top core model in the same color and it wasn t half as nice. super comfortable asymmetrical neck carve, coil splitting, locking tuners, all the bells and whistles. i m selling it with the super swanky paisley case i got for it in mint condition, and also for kicks i ll throw in the prs gig bag i got for it. selling because try as i might to get hip my heart is with my gibsons. never gigged with, and had it professionally set up when i bought it earlier this year. it s a great guitar and it deserves to be played.

This guitar is awesome. I was actually really surprised right out of the box how playable it was. Feel like usually when you get a new guitar you have to get it set up to really see it shine, but this thing right away is super playable. Was definitely surprised how light this thing was also, its crazy, it looks like it'd be heavy but its lighter than even my strat. (this could be a good or bad thing depending on what you want imo). It reminds me a lot of my Les Paul, but the reliability of it staying in tune right away along with it being WAY lighter has definitely impressed me. In my own personal opinion it has taken all the good things about a les paul classic and done them better. Similar price, similar tones, but doesnt have those typical gibson issues that those guitars usually come with. Highly recommend, it sounds great, plays great, and feels great. Only complaint is that they should release some better finishes. But otherwise, who cares, its awesome.Graham

Studio guitarist Tim Pierce says it's the best PRS, which has also been noticed in the guitar collection of Nashville studio ace Bret Mason. This Core model is top-notch and features exquisite build quality. The pickups were prototyped 40 times and are reminiscent of a Les Paul, ES-335, and Telecaster. The five-spring vibrato bar provides a nice shimmer with the signature .11 gauge string set. The fret dress is exclusive to this model, a requirement of David Grissom. This is PRS's version of a vintage style Gibson Les Paul. John Mayer dubs it "the best new guitar I've played in years". I say it is the best guitar I've played. It is the ultimate Les Paul. My band was in awe of it's tone. I'm surprised by how noticeably better the tone is than my 2015 PRS Custom 22 Stoptail. I thought the CU22 was amazing, but the 594 blows it away. I've owned 3 Les Pauls: 1973 Custom, 1991 Standard, and 2017 Standard HP. The PRS 594 beats them all in tone, playability, tuning and comfort. The only thing PRS doesn't have is the cool looking Gibson headstock, but that design is why Gibson's dont stay in tune.Raz
I tried two of the PRS 509s. I was disappointed because in my opinion the pickups were not as defined as my PRS 513s. First the 509 does not have heavy humbucker as does the 513. BEcause I perform such a variety of music I need Single, Clean, and Heavy. Second the neck clean humbucker was not as clear as my 513's. It seemed a little darker. The 509 bridge clean humbucker seemed not to have the drive the 513 has. Third. And here is the kicker with the 509. In Pseudo Single Coil Tap Mode it is NOT truly single coil mode. You see there is some coil sharing from the other bobbin to keep the volume from dropping to noticeably. Therefore, the sound is not a single coil sound. Fourth. Also, another sticky point. With the switch position in bridge and middle pickup you do get that Strat quacking sound however with the neck and middle switch position you don't really get that quack like the 513 does. I has to do with which bobbin is being used as the main bobbin. With the 513 there is truly single coil mode because only one bobbin is activated. I did buy one of the 509s. I thought I could get used to it or set it up different. I am still sorry I did. I would rather buy another 513. I also have a PRS Custom 24-08.(with the 498 pickups). Now that sounds great because in single coil mode they really only activate the one coil. All that being said it might be just right for some guitarists.prs32164
