I bought this as a Stupid Deal of the Day. I wasn't expecting great quality — just a serviceable instrument. Alas, even there I was disappointed. There were minor annoyances like absolutely no documentation — no manual in the box; no manual on-line; nothing. I still don't know what the little allen wrench that came with it is for. When I picked up one of the legs it fell apart. There is a press-to-fit collar that holds the screw which allows adjusting the length of the leg. It wasn't actually pressed onto the shaft it was supposed to be attached to. A little brute force (before I attached the leg) solved that one. The real problem, however, came when I managed to assemble it anyway in spite of these minor glitches. Within moments of me setting it up on it's legs, one of the legs fell off. Actually the metal plate into which the leg screwed fell off. Luckily I still had all the packing material because I hadn't actually managed to completely unpack it. I called Musicians Friend. They were very helpful and immediately sent a RMA and a return label. Back it went.Bill, W.
Excellent product, I found it to hold tune and appears fairly sturdy. Strings are adequate for practice will experiment with others later, but not bad. I ran this through my Fender Deluxe reverb and found very little hum. Practically none and this surprised me as it is a single coil pickup. My only grip is the legs, I could not even get them to screw in, but then I didn't plan to use them in the first place, this instrument is best in your lap. The legs will come in handy if there is a noisy cat in the alley, or I need something to sink a boat (they are fairly heavy and seem decent, except, they are impossible to screw into the dang guitar!) Overall I would highly recommend as a first lap steel for sure.Mike
I've played electric/acoustic/bass for over 25 years, but got curious to try a lap steel because I've always loved the sound; I know what a quality instrument should feel like, and this definitely met or exceeded my expectations. I tuned up to C6 easily, and the single-coil pickup gives a nice bright tone that is consistent in volume from string-to-string. I haven't noticed any hum from the pickup at normal practice volume, and no grounding problems. I expect I'll change the strings soon, but that's a personal preference. A few people mentioned tuning problems; the tuners aren't the best, but I'd suggest pulling on each string when you first get it, to get any extra slack out of them. After that, mine holds tune perfectly fine. It packs up really neatly in the included gig bag, which does hold the detachable legs as well. The gig bag doesn't have much padding, but should be perfectly fine for storing the guitar when not in use. If you need to gig with the instrument professionally, I'd suggest getting something more solid, but this is a fantastic option for someone looking to learn on, or for studio use where you're looking for some different tones.Sam A

Hello Ola, I am thrilled with my new Boden Original NX-8. Combined with my Fusion NX-6, I have excellent, hand & wrist friendly, very high quality guitars. I am using a Mono Y-Cable with the NX-8 so that guitar oriented pedals and amp are used for "guitar", while bass i sent to bass-supportive pedals and amp. Really takes better advantage of the 8 string features. My only regret is that I am challenged in trying to add my Roland GK-3 pickup to either Strandberg for use with my GR-55. The very ergonomic, minimalist bodies leave little room for attaching the synth hex pickup. But, still trying since I have been a Roland guitar synth player for many years. strandberg asked me to review this product, and I replied that I was not pleased and that they probably did not want my review. Then… they asked me again. First, the positives. This ax is exactly what it says it is. It's compact, ergonomic, light and full of innovations. The fanned frets are just like everyone says.. you don't even notice. The same for the asymmetrical neck. The 3 way switch and controls give you a broad pallet of sounds, just like everyone says. The problem is that it felt, to me, that I was not playing a musical instrument. It didn't respond like an instrument. It felt like a piece of electronic equipment. The tones, while varied, never struck me as particularly musical. I suppose if you are depending on pedals to shape your sound, that's not a limitation. In that case the guitar is just a device for generating a signal. But that's not how I play. It didn't work for me. Remember… I TOLD strandberg all this, and they still asked for the review. My guess is that their algorithm simply registered that I hadn't submitted a review, so they asked me again. But that's it in a nutshell, isn't it? All machine. No soul.John S.
I've been eyeballing the Masvidalien Cosmo pretty much since it was released – I was hesitant to pull the trigger for two silly reasons: 1) I was stuck in this misguided notion that I needed an extended range guitar to play modern metal and 2) I was afraid that the high variability of the burled maple tops could somehow result in me receiving an ugly guitar. Like I said, silly. I started considering the artists I love who do mostly play 6 stringed guitars and decided that was a bad reason to hold back (look at Joe Haley of Psycroptic, or of course the man himself – Paul Masvidal of Cynic!) so after over a year I finally ordered my Cosmo. I was not disappointed! It's light as feather. Fretwork is immaculate. The EMG 57 sounds great, and that VMC control does really allow you to shape the sound (admittedly I need more time to play around with this). The burled maple top is exactly what I was hoping for. I don't see any tool marks, any hiccups in the paint, etc – in short, the guitar arrived flawless. I own one other guitar – a black Boden Original 8. Again, it's silly but I was concerned that I would have a hard time dropping down two strings. Like my fingers wouldn't know where to go. This wasn't the case at all. The slight 6-string multiscale feels just right and the EndurNeck is surprisingly effective (I figured it would play less of a role than on my 8 string since the 6 string neck is so much thinner, but I don't think that's the case at all). It probably sounds like I'm heaping too much praise on this instrument – that I'm being blindly positive. Maybe that's true. But it far exceeded my expectations, I haven't found a thing wrong with it, and I haven't been able to put it down since it arrived. Paul Masvidal and Ola Strandberg cooked up something truly awesome, and I feel very fortunate to be able to own a Cosmo. Highly recommended.Grim

Overall: I just Bought this guitar from zZounds Feb 2020. I ordered it one afternoon it was here early the next afternoon. I took it out of the box, unlocked the nut, tuned the guitar, locked the tuners, fine tuned, and did a 4 hr gig covering multiple styles! It was perfectly set up and ready to go 🙂 The 12 inch radius is exactly what I need. I can’t play 14 or 16 inch radius necks. The more I play it the more I love it! The neck and middle position are strat like and the bridge position Rips! Great clarity in the pickups. The ONLY problem is the fret edges. They don’t roll/file the fret edges so you’ll have to have that done like I am. It’s a machine otherwiseMichael
Absolutely a great guitar the width of the fretboard and radius is amazing especially paired with the satin finish neck' the A 500 coil pot is amazing and the pickups are on the money. Shouldering and playing the guitar is a charm and it finds you as an instrument verses you having to continually set up and never being satisfied. Easy to upgrade although I don't see why it would be necessary unless you want a coil splitter. The pickups are good enough to get any chime you want with EQ, and peddle adjustment's. Ebony fretboard is very solid' as I just can't say enough about the neck size as it's perfectly on the money' and last but not least,you can leave your old TUNING issues in their cases because your dean will straight up stay in tune' I run d addario 120 9/42's and play for hours and stay in perfect tune. That's hard to find in an budget super strat. You want be disappointed with this guitar' wether your an living room picker or an actively gigging musician this guitar is money well spent.Henry

This model of Goldtone squareneck resonator is absolutely best in class. I own two (tuned differently). Incredible bell like tone, sweet wailing and LOUD. I have been playing lapsteel for 40+ years. The color of the front of the guitar on this MF site is horrible. You can get some idea of color by the photo of the back of the guitar on this site. Best photos are on Paul Beard's store site. I ordered my first Gold Tone PBSDeluxe blind. The second one I ordered a year later through Paul Beard's shop because he goes through them and sets them up and changes anything that is not perfect. Once the second one arrived and I heard it, I shipped my first one to across country to have them do a set-up and also install a Fishman Aura pick up like I did with the other. Well worth it, even if you buy it through MF.Bugs
Overall: This is a consumer-grade instrument. Made in China. Unfortunately, those two things bring unfair but usually accurate thoughts. The craftsmanship is superb! The finish is as good as it gets. Sound is industry standard. Comes with a nice case. In my opinion most all Gold Tone instruments are overpriced. This is really nice. Unless you have certain materials in mind I doubt you'll have any problem with this. No complaints.

A friend and ex-coworker told me about MK a couple of years ago. I saw him again recently and he asked if I had checked it out. I hadn't but I did this time. Glad I did! I ordered the Patriot Decree in Caramel Burst with a case. Both the guitar and case are beautiful! Excellent instrument and snug case. Plays and sounds like a dream. The only issue I found was when you turn the tone control all the way down on the bridge pickup it kills the volume? An MK rep told me this was normal. I have a LP, a 335 and an SG, all with humbuckers, and none of them suffer from this malady, but I would rarely, if ever, use that setting so I can live with it. Other than that I'm very pleased with this guitar and the usual great experience with AMS.G2
Overall: Well I didn't get to play it because zZounds sent me a customer return with a snapped neck that apparently didn't get checked prior to shipping. But even with just looking at & feeling the guitar it didn't feel worth the money. I'd say the cheapest Epiphone Les Paul Special is a way nicer feeling & looking instrument. I read great reviews that these play and sound good but to me it look and felt like cheap laminate wood grain with an uglier finished than the pictures show. Definitely won't order another one after returning this damaged one.Cory
So I had a hiccup in the beginning with this guitar, but besides the blemishes even though it was a brand new guitar american took lead and made it right with me. As far as the guitar goes well she’s bad out the box. Yes I have different tuners and different strings now but that’s a players choice. What comes in the box is amazing. Rich beautiful highs on bridge and smooth blues tone on the neck and neck with bridge together there’s no stopping that sound. This guitar is simply amazing in my books. I have purchased many of guitars and this one is by far the best out of the box. I'm also a dobro player. Had issues with getting the dobro loud enough for church praise band without feedback so I bought the Asher lap steel. Same scale length and string spacing as dobro and came with strings suitable for dobro tuning, Perfect fit. The tone is great with the neck pickup and neck/bridge pickups on but to my ears the bridge pickup alone is very thin and tinny sounding. Quality control issues: First thing I noticed right out of the box was that two of the tuner buttons rattled when I played it. Should be an easy fix by tightening the screws on the tuner buttons but these don't have any at all. Not sure how the buttons actually stay on. Anyway I used a little super glue on the two rattlers and that fixed the problem. I'll probably upgrade the tuners at some point but for $900+ after taxes I shouldn't have to. Also the plate around the output jack was loose and I had to tighten that up. No big deal but still…. Re stringing is a puzzler with the wrap around bridge. On the lower strings the ball end of the string wedges up against the plastic ring around the pickup making them difficult to change. There suggestion is to take the provided allen wrench and rais the bridge to make the strings easier to remove. Really? Raise and lower the bridge everytime you re string? Why not move the bridge pickup 1/8 up away from the bridge? It certainly isn't going to hurt the bridge pickup tone any…. Anyway, it is a good instrument that I plan on keeping forever, just keep in mind that it won't be perfect. Oh, the gig bag is very nice. Sturdy and nicely padded.cb56
Honestly… This instrument is very nice for someone learning to play lap steel. Drop the conservative amount now and as time prevails upgrades can be made to make this guitar road worthy. The tuners are cheap and are not going to withstand someone who is gigging. And of course… The pickups aren't going to give you that HOT sound most desire. Overall: I'll admit, this was a what I'll call an educated impulse buy. In other words, I wasn't looking to buy anything new. Bur, I saw a review video in my YT recommended, with some hyperbolic title. That put it on my radar. Thus it was an impulse buy of sorts.That said, I had researched in the past the non USA made Sterling brand from Ernie Ball Music Man. I once had a MIA Ernie Ball Music Man. It was bar none, the best Guitar I have owned. But when I had to get a bunch of cash fast, a while ago, I sold it. I got almost what I paid new, back. SO, when back from that setback, I looked at their budget line.But they WERE made in China, which I have a thing against, so passed back then. But, from that video, I found they moved their manufacture to the Cor-tek factory in Indonesia. AND, the 2021 new models have a lot of nice features for sub $500 guitars.Overall, this is a really good guitar. It wasn't perfect, as delivered, though that was Sterling's bad, not zZounds. Most notably, the jack plate was installed slightly crooked. There was also the tiniest bit of not roughness, but, not as smooth as the rest, area of neck near the joint. It was barely perceptible, but was perceptible. A minute or 2 with the finest grade fret eraser, then Ernie Ball Fret Conditioner, for roasted maple necks, and no more Though the action was setup OOB fine, usual height you get from a factory setup. But, I like it a little lower. So out with the fret rocker. Yep 3 of the top 5 upper frets were the tiniest high.10-15 minutes of using fret sanding tool, and fret erasers and no moreK, bad out of the way, what was good?Rest of the fit and finish was perfect. The bridge and trem is really high quality. Tuners, are better than most Asian made guitars I have gotten. Rolled fret ends, and overall fret dressing was great and smooth. Pots feel very smooth. Taper is actually pretty good. As good as top notch Bournes, etc? No, but about as good as stock from anyone. Switch feels solid. Uses mini pots. But, they are top quality minis.Setup, as far as intonation goes, was perfect. So was neck relief. Nut cut perfectly/Pickups sound really good. The 2 single coil are surprisingly good sounding. With the shielded cavity, they are darn quiet too. The Bridge Humbucker is decent. It's matched well with the 2 SS pups. BUT, I'm not 100% sold on it yet. But, I'll give it some time first. They all read out as vintage output. I can easily see the stock staying on all around, and being perfectly happy with them.Holds rock solid tune. Part great trem, part great cut nut, part MM design on headstock and string path,The neck is a joy to play. Close to a 59 LP type, but it is thicker on the base side, more like slim taper on other. moves more to a C shape at 12th, but still thicker on bass. Satin Roasted maple is just NICE.Overall, It is every bit as good (once I reset the jack) as the MIM Strats I have, or have had, the Squier CVs I have had, the Asian PRS I have played..So, for the price, this is an excellent guitar. The jack is easily fixed. I've got guitars costing twice as much that this is equal quality to and I usually replace the pickups on those, and at worst will only the Bridge HB on this CT50 (and might not).
So, the first one shipped to me had a couple issues – bowed pickguard, a crack at the neck heel, and the trem was crazy loose – that caused me to return it. Trem bar was already attached, but no allen keys. Ordered another at the store and had it delivered there too. Unlike the first, the second Cutlass arrived in two boxes. A Sterling by Music Man box inside the Guitar Center shipping box. This guitar was flawless and set-up perfectly. Packed inside was a couple plastic bags containing the trem bar, neck-adjusting allen key, and a small allen key for the bridge. Lesson: If yours arrives in only a generic box, it is a store floor model. Inspect it carefully. ****Ask for a discount, if you still want it.**** The guitar was easy to get use to. Plays like a dream. Easily exceeds my expectations.Stuart

That being said I received my guitar from a local Guitar Center and my guitar came in a generic box tightly wrapped in bubble wrap with was great but not original. No sterling box ? Not sure if I got a display model or what. Then realized that's all that was in the box. No paperwork or wammy bar. Emailed my musicians friend rep last week. Still haven't heard back from him. Overall: I love this guitar. I've purchased multiple guitars from zZounds and have owned many others over the years. This one is a monster. I'm a Floyd rose guy..not because I use the tremolo much but the tuning stability is something I just learned to "need". So I've generally avoided hard tails for that reason.(I own a Ken Susi LTD with the everyone and that's a different thing altogether) First Jackson guitar ever…love it. Smooth play..great tone…visually stunning!! Prettiest guitar ever made. (My opinion) it's flawless. Does it stay in tune like a Floyd? Of course not, but it does stay in tune. Long story short, there are guitars all over my house and I pick this one up 9 out of 10 times I play. It's truly a thing of beauty. Let me start out by stating this guitar is HEAVY!!! A good thing, if like me, you dig the whole weighty single cut thang! The purple shattered mirror finish is breathtaking. I have 2 of these this one and the alien burst I fell in love with the playability on the alien burst and made it my main guitar after a couple of upgrades. I didn't like the bridge or the tuning knobs so I switched them out for Tone Ninja tuners and a Graphtech bridge and I have no issues with tuning and no issues with breaking strings the die-cast stuff just doesn't turn me on. The guitar comes with JB4 and a 50 in the neck so it just needs small amp adjustments to make this thing sing I love the neck profile and the playability in Jacksons but I like Les Paul bodies so this is a win-win for me
