Reviews:
Bought the guitar on line through Guitar Center; Guitar Center is great. Out of the box, the guitar was playable but when being set up by my guitar tech, he discovered the fretboard was bowed at the connection point between the neck and the body. Ovation covered the repair under warranty. After being set up, the guitar plays great. Now I have a problem with the on board electronics and it is back to the shop for more warranty repairs. The guitar otherwise sounds and looks great. I was dissapointed that the guitar was made in Korea rather than the U.S. You get what you pay for. I own two other Ovation guitars and am very pleased with the sound and playability of all three guitars.
I rated this guitar a 1, if a Zero would have been a choice I would have given it a Zero. I absolutely hated this Guitar. I don't know if it just wasn't set up right or that's just the way Ovation sends out their Guitars. The string action on the middle to high end was just terrible, strings were so far off the fret board it was just miserable to play. If you don't mind playing the Guitar on the the first 3 frets you might be in business. For what Ovation charges for this piece of junk you think you would get a better playing guitar. What really sets me off is it ships in a cardboard box, no case. I hope Ovation sees this review and streightens up their act, in this competive world there a lot of other decent guitars for the same money, Ovation must be really trying to cut cost. I wish them well and hope they open their eyes. Bottom line, don;t waste your money. I woiuld never buy another Ovation agaiin. As if you didn't know, I did return the Guitar and hopefully will receive a refund.
I sold my old 1991 12 string Ovation custom legend and bought this guitar. I had GC take the two shims out of the bridge and the action is great; and the sound is great. A little loud compared to other guitars which is not a problem for me. This guitar sits on your stomach better than the old ovations; the back also provides access to the inside of the guitar. My 1991 Ovation was made in the USA and this one is made in Korea but has great craftsmanship. The Inlays on the neck are smaller and harder to see than my older model; I do miss that. This one sounds just as good or better than the USA made custome legend. This guitar is really beautiful to look at as well. I hope this helps. I am considering buying the 6 string 2778Ax too because I gave my 1994 6 string Ovation legend to my brother which plays excellently too. Note: Ovation backs will not expand and contract with the weather so I suggest you keep the guitar in the case when not in use with a humidifier as needed. Try them all and decide. This was the best for me.Audio Video Engineer

The guitar was beautiful and sounded wonderful. The problem was a loose pickup/pre-amp. I bought it used, so it's hard to say if it was shipped that way or damaged in transit. Nevertheless, Music 123 promptly accepted return and credited my PayPal account. I was so impressed I bought a new version of the same guitar from them.vcc26

Reviews:
This guitar is amazing for under the price. I've been playing for almost 15 years so I always hesitate with instruments in this price range (I know, I'm spoiled) I played its cousin guitar, the thinner-bodied model, at a store but they only had that one. So I went online for the bulkier version. This thing sounds great unplugged, which is saying something for the ovation line, generally having a reputation as good plugged-in guitars. The construction is what one would expect for the price but this thing walks and talks like a much more expensive rig. I'm thoroughly impressed. Do yourself a favor and grab one of these even if you don't have that much experience, I can already see this one standing strong with several of my guitars that are worth tons more.Ricky
I played this instrument at a jam session once and thought that i really liked it and the round back was comfortable. So I got one. when it came it did look great but the action was pretty high (even after rmoving the factory shims). Unplugged it just doesn't have a great sound. while it is super comfortable sitting down i found that when you wear it straped on while standing it becomes awkward as it tends to tip over a bit totally unlike a standard shape acoustic. So, i sent it back. For just another 50 you can get an Ibanez artwood series acoustic electric that has much superior sound. that's what i did and I'm very happy with that.h2oboy

8. Alvarez Artist Aj80ce-12 Jumbo Acoustic Electric 12 String
Product Details:
Solid top electro-acoustic guitar with cutaway jumbo body shape from multi-award winning artist series that provides a true powerhouse when it comes to sound. it is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce balance, lively projection and great response. these components include the fst2 bracing system, bi-level rosewood bridge, real bone nut and saddle, great quality tone woods including solid a+ sitka spruce top and maple back, sides and neck, and thin gloss finish. the fst2 is a forward shifted x brace design, which means the axis of the x is closer to the sound hole and therefore creates a larger soundboard area allowing for more energy and vibration to be harnessed. both the x braces and asymmetric tone bars are carefully scalloped. the fst2 also creates very good balance so both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. along with a more angled headstock with rosewood plate and chrome die-cast tuners, the bi-level bridge increases string tension by making the break angle of the strings from the saddle to the top more acute. improved string tension adds to the sound, feel and response, which are also heightened by the use of real bone nuts and saddles. other premium features include the lr baggs stagepro eq and element pickup for optimal live performance, 21-fret rosewood fingerboard with abalone/mother-of-pearl inlay, ivory abs binding, dovetail neck joint (joined at 14th fret) and d'addario exp strings. scale length is 648 mm, nut width is 44.45 mm. natural colour design.

Reviews:
Having owned an original 1980 Yairi DY87 doubleneck since new in 1980 I was looking to semi-retire it with a new six string acoustic to be my work horse. With that I bought the AJ80CE six string a few months ago and I am thoroughly amazed with the tone, feel, and looks of this Alvarez beauty. Now to compliment it I have now bought the twelve string version (open box) and I can;t say enough about it! Although I had to make a slight adjustment on it as the low "E" was kind of dead sounding- I popped out the saddle and adjusted the braided strip underneath and now it is absolutely an awesome sounding , looking and playing twelve string. I highly recommend both of these!
I ordered this 12 string from MF a few months ago. I have played an Alvarez Yairi since 1983 and my six string plays as well after 30 years than the day I bought it from St. Louis Music. I wanted a 12 string as I have only owned one in my lifetime–an Ovation I traded on a Martin six before trading for the Yairi. I have been so impressed with Alvarez that I didn't shop for anything else in a 12 string, saw this on MF and pulled the trigger knowing I could send in back. I registered it in my name day one. Alvarez is the most underrated guitar maker out there. A beautiful instrument I plan to keep and a joy to play. Thanks MF!Willis
Well, I have owned plenty of 12 string guitars in my time. Rickenbackers, Fenders, Gibsons, Peaveys, and Ovations but this is the finest of the bunch. I seriously wouldn,t replace it with any of the others that I have owned. I am a big guy, so this big jumbo feels perfect for me. The neck is just right, not too wide, the action is low enough, and tuned to D using a capo and extra light strings, it has a smooth touch and a loud enough sound, both highs and lows. It stays in tune. always a plus! The electrionics are superb and offer a fine balance of tones and volume combinations. I play mine through a Fender Acoustosonic 90 and wow. I am just blown away somtimes by the effects and possibilities with this setup. The whole instrument is a thing of beauty and I bet if you get your hands on one, you will just have to own it.12 String Paul

Nice Ovation guitar. The least expensive model still is enjoyable to play. The thin neck and slim body are comfortable. The string action is reasonable and the neck smooth. The sound is adequate unplugged and resonates nicely. Plugged in it is even better. It is a good knock around or first guitar.merlynus
Having never learnt 'properly' to play and after a gap of too many years I am re-learning. The guitar to my ear has a very good tone and for the money is excellent and would serve any beginner well if you can't decide, or have yet to decide, on what style of guitar you would like to play most.Steve R.

11. Ovation Celebrity Elite Acoustic-Electric Guitar (Black)
Product Details:
Hey guys! i ve had this guitar for the better part of 10 years and decided it s time to let it go and make room for a new acoustic! this model was made before fender bought ovation and moved production to china so it has an interesting history. it s an acoustic-electric and sounds great/ is in good condition; although it s missing a piece on the back (as seen in photos) that i m sure can be easily repaired at a music store. overall, it could use a tune up and some new strings as well.the price includes a really nice hard case and a black suede strap. let me know if there are any other questions i can answer!

Reviews:
I recently bought this guitar and was aware of the reviews on here criticizing the action and frets. Straight out of the box, those reviews ain't wrong, BUT if you put in a little setup work, this is a really fun guitar. After putting a shim under the saddle, tweaking the truss rod, and swapping out the strings (Elixir nanowebs are my preferred), this guitar plays like a dream- none of the buzzing I've seen listed in the other reviews on here. That said, I can't speak to the electronics since I bought this one strictly for messing around at home; for practice purposes and entertaining my toddler, it already serves its purpose well. Most exciting though: NO MORE LOST PICKS IN THE SOUNDHOLE!Tom
Great acoustic electric guitar for this price range. Well balanced tones from low to high. Works well with or without an amplifier. It doesn't have the rolling lows like my dreadnoughts, however, you wouldn't expect that from an instrument of this design. The intonation of the instrument was the first thing that really impressed me, which was dead on, all the way up the neck. Acceptably lower action than a regular acoustic (probably adjusted), with no fret buzz. The neck itself is slightly narrower than I'm used to, however, it is very fun to play, and easy to adapt to. I use lighter gauge strings on this, which seems to be preferable, as opposed to medium strings, which I use on other instruments. It is a beautiful instrument with a striking, unique design.gvbrown
I think all hecho en China models have a hump in the fretboard beginning around the 12th fret, which causes the B & E strings to sound brittle and tinny, if they don't outright buzz. A guitar tech friend calls this hump "ovation-itis". That's why they set them up med/high at the factory, which is hardly playable. This one was a surprise ! The action was almost low enough to be fun and required only a fret dressing, levelling on the 12th and above frets, and action adjust. It needs a little more, but it's fun to play now. This is the 4th celeb elite I've ordered, and 2nd one I've kept. The first, a supershallow bowl, required popping the frets off above the 10th and fretboard plained before re-fretting. The cost was almost as much as I paid for the guitar, cha-ching, lesson learned. Once you get the kinks out, these guitars are great for almost anything. The mid-deep bowl has much better lows and overall projection than the supershallows.SecretAgentMan

Reviews:
Bought this guitar for a specific purpose – as one half of an acoustic guitar duo, we sometimes need to either tune down 1/2 step or we use alternate tuning. This was a "kill 2 birds with 1 stone" purchase – tune the 12-string neck to EEBEBE and tune the 6-string neck down 1/2 step. Visually the guitar is beautiful. First thing I noticed out of the case was that the neck selector switch is very flimsy and awkwardly located. I've only used this guitar at a half dozen gigs, and at Friday night's gig there was no sound output at all. The volume slider actually came off the guitar on stage. Very embarrassing. Had to retune a standard tuned guitar to EEBEBE on the fly. We will see how Ovation handles my warranty claim. The guitar has taken no abuse at all – always in the case. I think the electronics are flimsy at best. All in all – very nice to look at, but not as well made as it appears.Tonto Goldstein
Ordinarily, one thinks of Applause guitars as being Ovation's overseas line. This guitar arrived with the "Made in Korea" sticker prominently emblazoned on the back of one of the headstocks. I had assumed this would be the case, though. A doubleneck (Made in the USA) Ovation would probably run upwards of $5k! For a "shallow bowl," it seems a bit deeper than I thought it'd be–I'd hate to imagine what a deep-bowled guitar would be like! The action is a bit high from the factory, but at least that gives you the option to lower it (mine came with spacers for the saddles). If the action's too low, there's not much that can be done (for a reasonable price). I always play in standard tuning and haven't had issues with the 12-string bridge lifting off the soundboard. I've had my guitar for about seven years now, and the volume control (or any other part of the electronics) hasn't broken, dropped into the case, or anything. They're all fine. Granted, I might play this guitar five or six times a year (Suite Madame Blue, mainly), though. The main reason for that is the poorly designed neck selector switch–it's a "paddle" style switch that sticks up about 3/4" from the side of the otherwise very sleek guitar. As clumsy as I can be, it's a wonder I haven't knocked that baby off yet! That design may make it a bit easier to switch necks mid-song, but Kamen (the company that owns Ovation) is one of the world's premier engineering companies of military hardware. Surely they could have come up with a better, more rugged way to switch between necks!Musical Friend
On first sight and thought it seems like a good thing. It can be but realize that it is an off shore production guitar and it needs things such as action set up and yes the switch and electronics are the much cheaper cost even for an off shore plant with what appears to be limited quality control from the one I was holding. The wood is Pli Wood/not choice spruce top from a temp controled stock room and it has very little to be desired within the fret job from the model I had in my hands. I wanted it but after I picked it up I didn't want it. But your probably safe with Musicians friend on returning it. Some off shore guitars will surprise you with pleasure. For me the one I had in my hands didn't. If it was made the way everyone here wants it to be made it would run you much more $$.

Great guitar, sounds great and easy to playcodacooke

For just another 50 you can get an Ibanez artwood series acoustic electric that has much superior sound. that's what i did and I'm very happy with that.h2oboy

nice and small looks fantastic. by the way this is black quilt not brown as said, darren
First and foremost, this guitar is gorgeous. I purchased the transparent regal to natural (blue) color scheme, and as great as I thought it looked online, it looked even better in person. It's sort of like a "moonburst" with a pearl color transitioning to a deep blue on the edges – very unique. If you do a google search for this particular guitar, you can find owner-posted pictures that give different visual perspective (and more accurate) from the stock GC picture. Guitar sounded great right out of the box after a quick tuning. Great quality strings, electronics (battery included) worked perfectly, and I didn't need to have anything adjusted. Quality seems high, no flaws were noted after delivery. As for the sound, it seems like there are some mixed reviews on the "super shallow" bowl from Ovation, but I was pleasantly surprised by the range of sound from the guitar. Obviously the highs and the mids are clear and bright, but the lows are much better than I anticipated for the shallow body style. I personally opted for the shallow bowl as I wanted a comfortable guitar with a compact size (yet full size) to play around the house, and I certainly feel like the sound doesn't disappoint. Sure, it doesn't have the bass presence of my full size dreadnought, but it sounds great nonetheless for its size, better than I anticipated. I was strongly considering a mid-depth bowl Ovation while purchasing this particular guitar, but I am happy I went with this particular model. After owning this guitar for a several weeks now, I still wear a big smile every time I pick it up. Would pick this guitar up again in a heartbeat.Ashcon

Reviews:
I bought this as an update of a 1979 Ovation 1612 I owned for 35 years. The guitar is a beautiful gloss black but just didn't have the rich sound of the 1612. I play almost exclusively unplugged and the 2771 sound was kind of plasticy to my ear. I suppose a higher end Ovation would have the rich sound I remember. Also, maybe amped up this guitar would be really great but I ended up returning this to music123. They were great with fast original delivery and quick return credit.TennisGuyMike
I used to own an 1861 Standard Balladeer a few years back and used it to play in the church band. I traded it for a Strat and have been kicking myself ever since. I'm glad to have one again. These sound ok acoustically but their real forte is plugged in. They are made to run through an amp and that's where they really shine. I use a Zoom GFX pedal and kind of use it like a T5 but without the cost for those of us who don't play for a living. (No slight on the T5, it's an excellent guitar.) They are durable as a sledge hammer. It always comes out of the case in tune and ready to play. The price is right.my44special
picked up a new instrument in need of repair. The price was right, so I gave it a shot, using the photos posted as a guide to what was wrong with it. The guitar arrived poorly packed, and it was a total miracle that UPS didn't destroy it in transit. The guitar needed a neck adjustment and a new nut, as the original one was not installed properly and some of the slots were filed too deep, causing buzz at the first fret. Ovation parts are not easy to come by- I have emailed Ovation customer service about ten times to request a new nut, but they are totally ignoring my emails. At this point, I am no longer confident in Ovation USA, and that's a darn shame…Toonz
