Mini Guitar Tuner Pedal For Sale (2024 Update)

Bought the Polytune 3 to replace the Polytune 2 on my board because I wanted the buffer without having to use a separate buffer pedal. First thing I noticed out of the box was that the Polytune 3's screen is only 60-70% as bright as the Polytune 2. Returned it and got a replacement; same thing. I spoke to TC Electronic and they confirmed that this is indeed a design change in the Polytune 3 because some people were complaining that the 2 was too bright (wow, I guess a lot of complaining people don't do outdoor gigs). Go figure. At all levels of the built in light sensor, the 3 is dimmer than the 2, including outside full brightness. Boo. This is a deal breaker for me as the Polytune 2's screen & brightness were perfect. The new one is too dim and hard to see from eye level, and other LED's on my board are actually brighter than the Polytune 3's display, which is distracting. So so disappointing as this could have been perfect. Such a puzzling decision on the part of TC Electronic. A much better solution would have been to make the brightness switchable between two modes if that really was an issue. I mean really: who wants a dimmer, harder to see screen? Especially outside in sunlight. They took one of the industry standard tuners and upgraded it with a switchable buffer, but downgraded it because the screen is dim. Going back to my Polytune 2 with separate buffer pedal.Tommy

Don't know how well it works yet. This is not ready to use out of the box unless you happen to already have a 9v DC power supply. Not sure if it will take a 9v battery because a specific hex wrench is necessary to open the unit. It would be helpful to have this information on a retailer's website to alert potential buyers.Steve

Does everything it says it does. I only have two complaints and two suggestion: 1) Tuning in poly mode seems to have you tune everything slightly sharp. I tuned all strings in poly first and then when switching to a single string to fine tune, ever single was string was just a hair sharp. I don't know if poly mode is accurate and single string mode is flat or vice versa, but that's a minor gripe. You can use poly mode to get close and single string mode to get every string perfect. 2) There is no way to "lock" the pedal in one mode or the other. You strum all strings for poly mode or one string for the other mode and the pedal automatically switches between modes. The problem is that you have to be sure ALL of the other strings are muted/completely silent to keep the pedal in single string mode. If you even accidentally bump another string while trying to tune a single string, the pedal will switch back to poly mode. It would be nice if there was a way to keep the pedal in one mode or the other to avoid inadvertently switching back and forth. Second suggestion, I wish there was a way to dim the display. When they say this pedal has an ultra-bright LED display, they mean it has an ULTRA-bright LED display. You could probably tune your guitar in low earth orbit with this pedal. That's fine in bright lighting or daylight, but at night or on a darkened stage, something that bright tends to affect my vision for a few minutes. Other than that, I found the pedal intuitive and easy to use. The only thing I had to refer to the manual for was to find out how to switch between alternate tunings. There is a TINY little button near the input jack and I missed it when just holding the pedal and giving it a quick once over. The pedal does not affect your tone in any noticeable way, even when you have your volume way up. The footswitch is smooth and there's no audible pop (either on the pedal or through your amp) when switching the tuner on and off.Heavyarms

I use my Korg Pitchblack Mini Tuner to tune both electric and acoustic-electric guitars. So… this is my 1st pedal tuner. I don't have anything to compare it to, but my SNARK and the tuning app on my smart phone. Anyhow, it gets the job done fairly effectively. I also like how it cuts off the signal from my amp when I use it. As for the cons, it uses three 3 volt batteries, which doesn't seem to make it function at 100%. Luckily, it works perfectly w/ a DC9V. Also, in my experience, it's not as easy to tune the low E string in comparison to the other 5 strings. I love the size of this tuner. Fits perfectly in with my basses and offers great display options (Half Strobe being my favorite). The colors chosen are great and the note display large and bold. My only complaint is that this uses (2) CR2032 batteries and the battery cover door was fun to open (it doesn't come off which is good, but you need to know that). Adding a couple spare batteries doesn't take up much room either. Love the little details (feet that turn out to stabilize, external 9v jack, modes).Kevin L.

The KORG Pitchblack PB01 pedal tuner is the greatest thing since sliced bread. This is much easier to use than the flimsy clip-on type tuners. You don't have to use it on the floor; just place the tuner on a table and plug in your guitar. It is easy to tune up this way. I really think this tuner is great…I also ordered the newer version as well. Again, stop fumbling with the clip-on type tuners. This is the way to go: KORG Pitchblack pedal tuners. Fast and stable, display is bright. The flat and capo tuning options are nice (only matters for polytune mode). Like other reviewers have noted, the polytune usually indicates certain strings are out of tune, but then when you check them individually, they are in tune. However, single-string tuning is easy. 2 modes – needle and strobe – I've only used the strobe and it is super accurate. The other beef is that it doesn't allow you to adjust the reference frequency – A/440Hz is your only option. A couple tunes I play are tuned either flat or sharp, so the pedal tuner is useless for those. Odd thing is the TC clip-on polytune (which I have as well) does allow changing the reference frequency by +/-5Hz.Marcel

I expected pedal to be powered by 9v battery. However it's only power option is via AC plug in power. I do not have proper power source thus cannot rate performance. I believe the option (or lack thereof) for power source should be a bit more prominate in description.KB

So, I really didn't know what to expect when I bought this pedal, I just figured that hey, its a tuner pedal, you can't really mess that up. The pedal in the beginning was great, it tuned my bass as it was supposed to, however, the actual switch didn't not take long to give out. By that I mean that it got to the point that it would come on randomly while I was playing (not good when actually performing) and it just would not turn off. I had to keep playing with the pedal until it would stay off. Ultimately, I just had to get rid of it. Honestly, its just a cheap pedal. If you're not looking for longevity, go ahead and buy it. But I think you should spend you money on something better.Benji

The tuning isn't super fine, but it gets you real close. When in tuning mode the signal is blocked like in most tuners. However a tiny bit of signal still passes as well as some slight noise generated by the led display. Not bad though and doesn't color tone when by passed. Nice large and bright display. Hard to beat really. If you need a tuner pedal you could do much worse than this at a much higher price.offsetsmith

Everything you need in a pedal tuner is here in one affordable pedal. Perfect for bass or guitar players. Comes with the option of a strobe or needle visual for your preferred method of tuning. Awesome for live gigs and makes switching between tunings stress free. You will need an additional patch cable and you will need to purchase a 9v power supply for it; not a deal breaker to me there is one available on the Sam Ash site and in the store. Lol, this tuner did not come with a DC power source cord. Luckily, I have a DC power cord from my HO scale train set power plant. This product works fine for tuning my guitar. I gave a one star rating because of the lack of power cord with this product.G.R.O.

I run quite a few pedals and had reached the point where it was clear I needed a buffer at the front and end of my pedal board. Didn’t want to use up too much space and another slot on my powered supply by just adding a buffer so after a bit of research decided I would try a buffered tuner for the front end. Having used the same Boss TU12 tuner for the best part of 30 years I decided to change it for the TU3. Happy that it has solved the problem at the front end and combined with a buffered ABY switch at the back end before my amps, it has done as intended. Tuner functionality is pretty standard and a good replacement for my trusty TU12. Accurate and stable enough for normal use plus setting intonation precisely, tho I use multiple tuners when doing that. I’d recommend the TU3. Good solid product, effective buffer.Derek I.

These tuners used to be the best. I had one for over 10 years that was totally dependable. Unfortunately, the old one got lost and I had to buy a new one. I was surprised at how fast the new one drained the battery (the same kind of 9 volt battery I always used with the old one). I had to change the battery all the time, compared to the old one that I think I changed the battery on 3 times in the entire 10+ years I used it. One day it simply died, even with a brand new battery. I did not have the receipt so I just went and purchased a new one. THIS ONE IS BRAND NEW and it already died, even with a new battery. They are clearly making these things like junk now. I did save the receipt and purchased the guarantee from Guitar Center so I'll be returning it and never buying another one again. It sucks, this is really the tuner I like best. I just wish they hadn't started making them like garbage.Von

Here's another solid Boss product that has become an industry standard. It's sturdy, effective, and simple. It does just what it advertises, without too many bells and whistles. If you're a Boss lover, then this is your pedal. I knocked off one star, because it's not quite as accurate as my TC Electronic Polytune 3, but it's still a great product, and is used by almost every pro artist out there.CoopDbomb

I love the ease of use of this tuner. It feels robust, and is easy to read. Pushing the switch down also mutes the sound from your instrument to the amp which is essential for speedy tuning situations. I have a 5 string bass and it has no problem registering the low B string. I have found the strobe setting less useful. Fine for tuning up at the beginning of a gig, but too sensitive whilst in the middle of things. I like that it has a 9v power port so that you can power another pedal from it, but would have liked Korg to send a cable with it. I have only had the tuner for a little over a week, but I can imagine it lasting a long time and it has already become my no.1 tuner for all things bass guitar.bikebiketom

Pedal display is easy to see when sitting or standing. I like the strobe settings as they help me get the best tuning. Tuner settles down quickly to show if I'm tuned high or low — many others tend to jump around a lot. Pedal case and switch seem sturdy enough, and it's easy to set the pitch calibration and display modes. I got this for the tuner, but also because it shuts off the signal to the amp when I turn on the tuner. This is perfect for changing guitars or connections or clearing out the memory in my looper, so this pedal is the last thing before the amp. Only one complaints: it turns on and off by inserting or removing the input guitar cord. I don't like having to unhook things every time I'm done playing. The instructions say it shuts off by itself after 4 hours, so my only concern is how much that drains the battery, haven't had it long enough to see if that's an issue. I wish it showed which OCTAVE a string is tuned to (like "E2" instead of just "E"), this would take some of the guesswork out of retuning after replacing a set of strings. I also wish it had an accuracy better than 1 cent (1 / 100 of a half-step or semi-tone). That's what most tuners claim, and a guitar still needs some fine-tuning by ear once most tuners say it's correct. But this one, using its strobe display, seems just right.Mr.Dave

I purchased this as a backup or possible replacement for a Boss TU-2 that I've had for 15 years and has had some issues with internal wires to the jacks coming loose. I've since fixed the TU-2 and have yet to put the Pitch Black on my board. That said, it's a perfectly good tuner pedal. Adequate display, accurate tuning. I haven't messed with the display modes; default is fine to me. Supposedly it's true bypass, so that's the only "advantage" I can see over the Boss. I haven't seen a reason to unseat the Boss other than wear and tear. My only complaint is that the switch is a momentary switch (no click when you step on it), so it seems like it might be a little easy to activate by accident. Yes, I know the Boss has a momentary switch, too, but it feels a little more solid due to the design of the pedal. It's nothing major and wouldn't deter me from ordering again, though.Masterbasser

I tested it against my strobe tuner and was impressed how close it was, not perfect but neither is my ear. So, I used it for the first time during a recent sound check. Unaffected by background noise it performed flawlessly. My guitar was unplugged so I was dependant upon the green light. Buying a back up! Only a couple drawbacks but overall very handy.trey452

It works great at home when getting ready to record and have the time to check it afterwards. The times I've tried to use it in a live situation, it's ended up being off and more time consuming than just using my floor tuner. I was excited about the "tune up to pitch" function, which is how you should tune your guitar to keep the tension on the string, but it turns out it doesn't work good and just kinda goes back and forth wandering looking for the right pitch. I asked to return the unit after that, and the company said they knew it was wrong and they were working on a new algorithm to fix that, so just hold tight. I decided to keep it for the heck of it, but haven't heard back.itisrocks

The title says it all. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CHARGE THE UNIT BEFORE USING. SOME POINTS TO REMEMBER. 1) Get a firm grip on this tool. The torque the Roadie 2 generates is surprising, and if the unit is not firmly grasped and/or seated on the tuners it will jerk, possibly come off and you start over again. 2) Don't be surprised if, during tuning, Roadie advances to the next string without you knowing about it. That is, if at first you are a bit slow (and one will be until one gets the hang of it) and think you are tuning for a B string and the machine thinks you are ready for the high e. If at any time one hears more winding than necessary for any given string and of course the pitch goes way beyond normal, you are probably doing something similar to the B/high e scenario. Sometimes the Roadie 2 lets one know one is tuning the wrong string when a red light flashes and a "wrong string" warning appears on the string. There is more but I'm out of……MRW

Defective right out of the box. I love the Ernie Ball Vp Jr and I've tried most volume pedals on the market. EB VP has the best sweep but I literally have to replace it every 1-2 years. I assumed after this long in the game that their new upgraded pedal would be great and it doesn't even work from the start. Technically speaking, the volume pedal part works fine so far but the tuner/volume screen has gone out 3 times in less than 30 minutes.Andrew O

I was looking for a tuner and a volume pedal to add to my board when I stumbled across this combination pedal. Great idea! This device accomplishes both while saving a spot on the board. The large display is easy to see even on a dark stage between tunes. Robust construction give confidence that it will be durable for years to come. There is no extraneous noise and little to no alteration in overall tone when used in the front of my board. It's only been 3 months but so far I couldn't be happier with this device!Jbass222

Bright red leds on either side to indicate where you are. The display turns green when in tune. It seems like this tuner prefers longer drawn out notes as compared to rapidly picking in order to pick it up. It does kill the output when engaged just like other chromatic tuners do.Justin

A lot cheaper than a BOSS TU-3 and not as accurate, with fewer modes and often shows the opposite turning error in some cases compared to BOSS. It will take a bit longer to tune. It does turn green when it thinks you are in tune which is helpful. The Boss is better but this is much less expensive.Edward

Right size, and visibility but requires external power, can't just slip a couple of batteries in and have it work…need to realign my pedal board to fit it in…..IRA

I use my Korg Pitchblack Mini Tuner to tune both electric and acoustic-electric guitars. So… this is my 1st pedal tuner. I don't have anything to compare it to, but my SNARK and the tuning app on my smart phone. Anyhow, it gets the job done fairly effectively. I also like how it cuts off the signal from my amp when I use it. As for the cons, it uses three 3 volt batteries, which doesn't seem to make it function at 100%. Luckily, it works perfectly w/ a DC9V. Also, in my experience, it's not as easy to tune the low E string in comparison to the other 5 strings. Aside from those 2 things, I'm satisfied with my purchase.Jaime The Tenor

I love the size of this tuner. Fits perfectly in with my basses and offers great display options (Half Strobe being my favorite). The colors chosen are great and the note display large and bold. My only complaint is that this uses (2) CR2032 batteries and the battery cover door was fun to open (it doesn't come off which is good, but you need to know that). Adding a couple spare batteries doesn't take up much room either. Love the little details (feet that turn out to stabilize, external 9v jack, modes).Kevin L.

The KORG Pitchblack PB01 pedal tuner is the greatest thing since sliced bread. This is much easier to use than the flimsy clip-on type tuners. You don't have to use it on the floor; just place the tuner on a table and plug in your guitar. It is easy to tune up this way. I really think this tuner is great…I also ordered the newer version as well. Again, stop fumbling with the clip-on type tuners. This is the way to go: KORG Pitchblack pedal tuners. Preface, I use this with an acoustic violin fitted with a BTS pickup (dual piezos/string), OR with a Greek steel stringed laouto to immediately change from standard tuning to a 5th lower (Cretan, Southern Aegean tuning). Pros – This is a mentality saver. You can be a fantastic musician, able to transpose well, yet regardless of the instrument you are using, and still get a little tripped up when you need to switch course and play in some oddball key. Voila! Drop! I learned about this pedal from a class A1 violin player from Greece (composer, lyricist and recording artist who has recorded with just about every big name- this person is no joke, message me for his name if interested). This person can transpose to any weird key you throw at him, why use it? His response? "Because when I'm on stage and I need to switch quickly to an odd key, I can simply hit the button and not have to think about it". So I gave it a try, and have been using it for 2 years now… it's a life saver. I'm just a fiddler, but this saves me from stressing out and I can play free and it sounds GREAT. It tracks so well I can't tell if there is any latency at all. Cons- With my current setup, I find that I need to either play in front of a monitor or near a speaker or use IEM's, as when playing through the pedal with an acoustic instrument, obviously you are going to hear the natural AND the modified sounds and you ARE going to think it sounds like garbage, then attempt to junk it. DONT DO IT! Unless your pedal is defective, your sound from the speakers is clean. This pedal is meant to be used with mainly electric instruments. During sound check, as loud as you can be, you'll still hear the acoustic sound of your instrument, yet once you are playing with the full band (depending on what your band consists of), it will eventually drown out the sound, and you'll be able to focus on your modified tone, but this is not consistent. Just be aware. If you can, I suggest using some sort of IEM system, wired or wireless, or a monitor. My next step is getting an electric violin body to use this tool even more effectively, but moreso in order to truly utilize my pickup. In a nutshell: Do it!pazarinyc

Sound: Unbelievable how well this pedal track's notes and cords with no noticable latency, IMO it sounds better than tuning down. Features: It's a tank ! Sturdy , Solid , Heavy for it's size , no instructions needed , plug and play Ease of Use: This is simple , Standard tuned guitar , twist the knob to earth shaking low's. Quality: As mentioned , it's a tank , solid construction. Value: I hesitated on this purchase because of the price for a one trick pedal , Worth every penny ! Manufacturer Support: I have several DigiTech products , I still have the old RP-1 and it function's like new , I have no doubt this pedal will give me many year's of service. The Wow Factor: I prefer to play my guitars in standard tune , it's always been a hassle to get the right string tension when drop tuning , this pedal just ended that problem for me Overall: Just unboxed this pedal, been playing it for 2hrs , bar none the best pedal I've ever played ! Keeping the guitar in standard tune and dropping it to two whole steps , the notes and cords track perfectly ! No more floppy strings and no more switching guitars, the pedal is a must have for anyone who plays multiple drop tunings. This pedal is a tank solid heavy construction.Dennis
