I've owned one of these for years. It doesn't hang well (neck dive), has the sound that you'd expect out of a shoebox sized cavity (no bass), and is over priced. The only reason for owning one of these is if you are severly cramped for space. Get a Baby Taylor, instead of this thing. They are close to the same price, the last time that I checked.Ken
When I first saw these in the CF Martin catalog, I thought how weird looking they were. When I asked at a local shop about them, I was told they would order one for me, but I would not like it! But I liked classical, nylon string guitars and I wanted to own something from CF Martin. Other than this, Martin GTR does not make anything else like that, unless they invented something since I quit looking. I was very fortunate to discover Musicians Friend, and they at one time had these with a passive pickup. These were on sale at a very good price! I ordered one, it arrived in very good shape, in very good time. I fell absolutely totally in love with it, weird shape and all. You could tell it was a Martin, it reeked quality. It's small, the tone is great, but the volume is not huge. Use it for travel, camping, hanging on the wall for odd moments of practice. It's not a case queen, fussy little guitar, but protect it from too much heat and moisture, it is made with wood and glue. With a pickup you could probably blow away a concert hall with it. Look in the sound hole, it will say where it was made there, and tell you to always use extra-lite nylon strings. No truss rod was standard for ages with nylon string guitars, the Backpacker does not have one. Most guitars eventually need the action adjusted to suit the player, including ones costing 10 to 20 times as much as this one. Mine came with a very nice strap and a special gig bag, both very useful. If this appeals to you, don't hesitate to give it a try. I've had mine for years and still love it. I have had mine for 10 years or more and enjoy it very much. It's not full body sound it's there to have something to practice and play when on holiday or outside on the deck enjoying a cold one. It doesn't take up much room when packing the car either And yes the one I have is an actual classical backpacker guitar that Martin made years ago. I use it with high tension strings DAddario Pro Arte at standard tuning and it holds up very good stays in tune never have a problem with it going outGerry

I purchased this case for a custom built solid wood guitar. Humidity where I live is usually about 25%. I also purchased the hygrometer that fits inside the case. The first week I owned the case I would put the hygometer in the case, wait a couple of hours, then check it. Then I would put the hygrometer on the end table in the music room. I would wait a couple of hours and then repeat the process. Outside the case, 25%. Inside the case, 43%. I have now had the case for about three weeks. I checked it inside the case about an hour ago. 47%. If your solid wood guitars live in a dry climate, call this site right now and order one of these. It could save your guitar's life. The only down side is the case is only available right now for Classical/Flamenco guitars and Dreadnought guitars. My 12 string fit nicely in the Dreadnought case (Larrivee L-03R-12E) and I will be buying one of these cases soon for that guitar as well.MarkW
I'm a professional classical guitar maker and my case distributor recently went out of business after many decades. So I'm searching for a decent classical guitar case and having a hard time finding one at a reasonable price range. This Protege case DOES fit a standard CLASSICAL guitar. That's the best thing about this case. It's an average quality case, nothing more and nothing less. For in home use it's fine. For light gigging locally it's fine. The case feels sturdy, as does the handle. I am not worried about damaging my guitar while it is in this case. However, the fit is extremely snug on my 1979 Guild Dreadnought – I have to really push to get it inside the case all of the way. Also, the lock does not function (as in, it will not lock). The latches do not line up exactly, but the case will still close with a little force.It also came with a small (~6"x~2"x~4") foam block with velcro on one side, covered in the same material used inside of the case. Ok, so there is only so "fancy" a guitar case can be, right? Wrong. This case is a work of art. First off, it's kind of heavy-which I like. If you plan on carrying it for long distances, you may want to look elsewhere. Secondly, the interior fits my guitar very nicely. There is maybe 1/4" of space around the body of my CR-6,so it isn't snug, but once you latch it down, I can't feel any movement. Thirdly, the blue interior looks awesome. It's velvety, not furry like most cases. Fourthly, the latches look like any other guitar case latches, but they are painted black… they seem like they are coated with something. THEY DON'T MAKE THAT ANNOYING CLACKING NOISE! They open and close very smoothly. Finally, when the guitar is in the case, and you pick up the handle, it balances perfectly. Very good buy that was suggested when I bought my Schecter Reaper-7. The guitar fits perfectly in there and doesn't move around at all. The only things I didn't realize when I bought it was that the cutouts for other gear inside the case weren't covered, so if it's not packed in well, there's a chance for it to move around inside. The latches and lock feel a little cheap, but still a good deal for the price. If you're worried about somebody getting into your case or if you want a better luck for say going through a baggage claim, I would look for something a little more expensive with better locks. I don't really have to worry about that, so it's perfect for me. If you want a case mainly for storage, like me, you'll be pleased with this product.Zack G

I enjoy my new case. I did have to return the initial case as it was cracked towards the top. Luckily, I have a Guitar Center nearby and they made the return and re-order very easy. The case itself is very functional. It is very common for reviews to point out flaws and for me, the one flaw is that the case does not open very far. It barely goes beyond 45 degrees which makes me cautious when removing or replacing my Martin guitar. This has nothing to do with the service from Guitar Center obviously – manufacturing. Also, the inner compartment is not very deep. Not really an issue just when compared to other guitar cases.James
I have been putting guitars in and out of cases and in and out of cars for more than 50 years. These currentMartin tblack ones are, not near as solid as the old blue ones. Nor are they done well. Poor QC. Nothing lines up. After concentrating and , hopefully, get past the aluminum safety the top has to be forced to mate with the bottom. The aluminum extrusion is not unlike the wheels on Ben Hur's chariot. Not nice to risk my 3 wonderful Martins. For over 50 years I have habitually popped a latch to get a purchase on cases. You know just enough grip to shift the case in the back seat of a car or to move the handle in reach. Well surprise,while shifting the D12-28 off came the latch! Really!? Some room inside or a dedicated place for a hydrator would seem prudent. This seems to be one of those, if it could be made cheaper it would made cheaper deals. I wanted to offer a "workaround" to one of the negative comments I read before purchasing the case. The user had a problem with the plastic cracking in the vicinity of the center clasp. I will say that I have noticed the fit on the case is quite tight at this location, especially because I have added a peg for fastening my guitar strap to the base of the neck. I have found a simple solution – just fasten the two adjacent clasps first. This distributes any stress on the plastic case and makes it easy to fasten the center clasp without risking damage to the case. I am grateful to the reviewer who pointed out this potential problem so I could address it before it manifested itself on my case.Lizarch5

rugged case that fits my D'angelico Gramercy well. Should fit any other brand of Grand Auditorium well too. There's just a tiny bit of wiggle room, but it doesn't bother me too much. i first bought a skb case at 3 times the cost of this and the foam insert fell out of the top when i opened it. i then bought a gator case also about 3 times more in cost and it was so bent up the case was hard to close and would not seal. you could stick 2 credit cards into the latched case between the gaps. i even bought an epiphone branded plywood case and it arrived with what looked like a bullet hole in the bottom bout end. i then bought this for $49 on sale with very low expectations the case was put together poorly, had glue slopped all over the case inside and out, the fuzzy black lining is very thin and cheap and the foam is hard. now the good, it has 6 latches that all work, one is lockable but you can use nearly any suitcase key to unlock it,the two sides come together easily and the fit is tight as it should be, the hinges are well placed and work properly. the outside is hard plastic with a nice uniform finish and what i expected and wanted. the handle is well attached and solid. my epiphone les paul limited custom pro fits like a glove. this is not something i would check at the airlines but it should be fine in the car and protect against kids and dogs in the house if this case had cost $100 or more i would have sent it back, at $49 sale price it is better than i had hoped for and better than the gator or skb. the thing all of these cases have in common is poor workmanship,cheap materials and made in china! after i cleaned up all of the glue it looks quite nice. it is a shame that the companies that build all of these chinese cases rely on the customer to do their quality control work. .crazy gunsmith
I bought a couple of these when they were on sale and they're exaclty what I expected. They're not top of the line, and they certainly are NOT suitable for checked luggage on a flight, but for everyday use they're fine. My Seagull Mariner fits perfectly. My Rogue resonator fits a little loose but it's fine. I've also used one to transport a D'Angelico hollowbody and it fit fine with a towel tossed on top to keep it from bouncing around.Doug

This is a Very nice guitar case that was not very well QC'd from the factory. The problem was not caught at M.F's shipping department either. They simply receive boxed products and then label and ship to you. The alignment and molding of the case was not right, for that reason the latch in that area will not close without a lot of pressure on the case. The plastic or the back hinges are also not connected quite right. This makes one of only three latches not real functional. Not sure how SKB could not catch this. It is very visible. This case is for my son's school guitar lesson's. It is very difficult for him to be able to close this latch. It would cost me forty more to send and receive another case. Not worth the money, so we'll just have to live with this defect. In hind sight, I'd should have payed thirty more in town to buy this case. Did not think I could have a a issue to buy a case online. To date (July 2013), Martin does not make a hardcase for the Little Martin. While this case is often considered a Baby Taylor case, it fits the Little Martin like a glove. The case came in what appeared like a very light, black, burlap bag within a larger cardboard box. There were a number of scuff marks on the case itself. While that didn't bother me much (with used it's going to get more), I was concerned it was a used case. Interior inspections suggest it was new but no one can be 100% sure. As for the case, the hidden storage is rather small approx. 7in x 3in x 2in. It's great to keep your capo, picks, and other minor items, but if you like to store your strap in there, it's going to be a VERY tight fit. I have read that people didn't like how the case rattles when it's close, for lack of a proper fit, however I didn't notice this problem and it seems like my Little Martin is pretty secure in it (I shook it pretty hard for a minute to see if I can hear it move). Overall I'm happy with the case. It's likely you will be using this as a travel guitar if you bother getting a hardshell case. The last thing you need is announcing to the world it's either a Martin or a Taylor in there and gets it stolen.AsianGuy97
This is my third case of this model. My wife just recently purchased a LTD. Edition Baby Taylor Koa. So I wanted it to be safe and secure. The SKB 300 is awesome. The previous ones are for my Little Martin (LX1) and for wife's Luna Safari nylon. We always each take a travel guitar with us when we vacation. The SKB 300 is light and tough. In My experience the lid lines up perfectly as do the latches. When you can catch them on sale they are an amazing value and offer. It is true the inside compartment is small but be realistic, its a small case. A capo and tuner and extra strings fit fine. I actually am able to also put a strap in but it has to rolled tightly. I know it fits Little Martins fine and I know it fines Luna Safari nylon string fine. It will NOT however fit Luna Safari's that have steel strings.craftydolls

I've just started using my baby Martin as my main performance guitar. So I needed a case that provided more protection than the flimsy thin bag that the guitar comes in. This is the only case that I have found that fits the bill for me. I wanted a "soft" case to carry on flights and this one has been great! I purchased this case for my Yamaha APXT2, and it is a perfect fit. The gig bag that comes with the Yamaha is pretty thin and doesn't offer much protection if you're going to take it out and about, so I wanted something better. When I ordered my Yamaha apxt2 ¾ Guitar I wanted to be sure it was well protected. I searched everywhere for product descriptions for a case that would fit this guitar securely. There was some mention in a couple of brand reviews but I wasn't quite sure I wanted to pull the trigger. I double checked the measurements of the guitar and this case and it seemed to fit. I picked up the guitar and this case from GC and they were a perfect match. This is a very well made semi-soft case. The construction is firm enough to offer great protection. The interior is plush like the same SKB model hard case but it has the backpack straps I was looking for. It also has lots of exterior storage. The outside appears to be quite rugged and it weighs a lot less than the hard case. While I wouldn't fly with this as checked baggage it will be perfect as a carryon. So, search no more.
