I had bought one of these back in 2017 when I made the switch to Acoustic. I don't know why but, I got rid of it so I could make the move tpo the Martin X-Series only because I had always wanted a Martin. To make a long story short, the Martin didn't cut it for me, so last week I made the move back to Taylor and the Big Baby. These newer ones are so beautiful but it's a shame, that Taylor has discontinued them. The Brown headstock along with the Solid Spruce top and Walnut back and sides, have really IMO, improved this model. Once set up properly, it stays in tune and just sounds awesome ! I would say that it is the best Acoustic going today which is under the 500 dollar range. Plus seeing that I'm on a low budget, this was a no-brainer. It's a keeper and I am getting a lot of joy playing it.Jeffrey
I had bought one of these from here way back in 2017 , which I used when I was gigging . I'm now retired ( 63 ) and only play at home now. I had to take a couple of years away from playing, due to pain in my left hand , which built up from 50 years of playing. I came back to playing in August of 2021 and I had bpught a Martin X-Series which at the time, I thought was great . Well it turned out that I ended up having issues with it and got rid of it, so I went back to getting a new, Big Baby Taylor, which always served me well. It's too bad that Taylor discontinued these because, these newer models are IMO, a vast improvement over the older ones. Since I got it on this past Sunday, I can not put this down. It just sounds so amazing and it stays in tune forever. While the included gigbag is a plus, I went and bought a Hardshell case for it. For those who want a Taylor but are on a low budget, this is worth the asking price and then some.Jeff
Since I went back to playing last summer after a 3 year hiatus, due to wrist pain in my left hand, I was using a Martin X-Series OMCX1E which I had nothing but problems with such as not staying in tune, fret buzz, etc. So over a week ago, I made the decision to switch to a Big Baby Taylor. I am limited as far as funds go, so $500.00 was the most that I could afford and I did not want to get a Baby but the Big Baby which is pretty close to a standard dreadnought size , at least as th neck scale is concerned. The body is a tad smaller and lighter which for me at my age ( 63 ) , makes playing a lot easier. Thiis came already set up and strung with Elixirs , which I liked . I can not believe how light in weight this is and it stays in tune , which is a huge plus for me. As far as tone goes, this easily blows away any of the Martin X-Series .I love this guitar and I will be making some wonderful memories with it.jeffreyo46

This is a well made, nice sounding guitar. Lefty instruments aren't as prolific as righties in general and more esoteric styles like 12-strings are even less likely to be in a shop. Having an inexpensive yet good sounding instrument like this is a relatively economical way to try it out. My guitar instructor is very impressed with how it sounds, especially for 3 c-notes below a grand. Pros: Good fit/finish, decent pickup built in (battery included), electronic tuner built in, comfortable neck width, projects well Cons: No case, arrived already close to in tune (should ship with loose strings to prevent warpage)Jeff
well made surprisingly the back maple is pretty it sounds like my Cole Clark almost lol I bought a left handed 1500 dollar Cole Clark and didnt like leaving it leaning up against my chair so i bought this beater and its nice i like it. I started my left handed journey. The quality card was stamped 2009 so i guess it was sitting for awhile in the wharehouse all the better.wg
I wanted to surprise my husband with a guitar for our one year wedding anniversary. I had no clue about guitars, did a lot of research and that's when I came across the Sawtooth brand while looking for a decent and reasonably priced guitar. This guitar is beautiful and well built. For that price it is a bargain. The details and design were not skimped on. It is solid, sturdy and has a rich look and feel to it. I gave 4 stars because while Walmart has the item listed as a 6 string guitar, it is actually a 12 string. I have contacted Wal-Mart about this issue and after reordering the item for a 3rd time, I finally gave up because it does not appear to be available in a 6 string even though that is currently the only option showing on the website. They kept sending me a 12 string. They have assured me every time I reordered that the issue has been fixed but clearly that is not the case. My husband will just have to learn how to play the 12 string, he loves the guitar that much! By the way, it sounds amazing. You won't be disappointed, just be prepared to get a 12 string and not a 6 string.Karen

This is a gorgeous guitar and plays amazingly well. The frets are rounded perfectly with no jagged edges. The frets are polished extremely well. The body is very comfortable, and the Duncan JB and '59 pickups are THE standard in rock pickups especially if you want those 80's rock tones ala VH, Ratt, Crue. BUT the ability to SPLIT the pickups makes this guitar extremely versatile for Blues, Country, and even Jazz if you roll the Tone off to warm it up. The Pro-Mod San Dimas is a sure to be a classic – Charvel guitars from the 80's are still highly sought after and retain their value very well. Not many people like to get rid of them though because they play so well and are made with quality craftsmanship. The Transparent Green Burst finish is gorgeous too. The spoke wheel makes for on the flow truss rod adjustments and it is DOUBLE reinforced – which makes it very resistant to warping. And finally, the Floyd Rose system is not the cheap version. The studs are quality metal which ensures smooth movement, the arm is also closer to the original FR bar which is also nice. TIP: wrap some plumbers tape along the outside of the collar to help close the space between it and the arm to tighten it so it doesn't swing so easily (old school trick 😉 FR bridges are incredibly stable and once you tine them and lock them down they stay in tune VERY well. Get a tremolo stabilizer or block it down to make string changes easier. Get this guitar – the combination of a basswood body, maple neck, jumbo frets, JB and '59 pickups, and a quality Floyd Rose bridge make this THE standard for rock and metal guitars. Sure, there are more expensive guitars that might have a bit more to offer…but for a grand? This is really superb quality and value rolled into one. The pickups are more than great. Seymour Duncans all around. JB in the bridge with no load tone. Cool thing is, if you feel its a tad too bright, just click down to 8 or 7 and it warms up nicely. I was afraid of the no load tone pot at first, but the little click helps tremendously. You know exactly where you are. The neck feels great. Like a thin C shaped Fender. Super fast! HSS config gives you plenty of options. It comes equipped with a Floyd 1000. Not their number one unit, but it is just fine and stays in tune very well. Even after a few dive bombs. I dont generally live in that realm, but nice to know it will hold its tune. Another thing, the guitar came set up just perfect for me. Zero adjustments needed. They're too darn huge and I often wish I knew that before buying this. The block where the neck is bolted on is huge and playing passed the 17th fret is tough. The pickup switch has a "dead spot" when switching so it's possible to go silent when moving the switch. I wish I tried the DK 24 HH FR before buying this because I feel that I would've been way more satisfied. Overall it's a great guitar. I love mine to death, but yeah beware of the cons if looking at this.Dan H

This guitar looks brilliant. The satin blue finish is exceptionally svelte. It's a decent guitar from a playing standpoint, but is more suited for the intermediate player getting their first upgrade to a more pro-like guitar. Particular people (like myself) will be disheartened by its poor quality binding that has obvious flaws where it meets the guitar body below the top wood. This wouldn't bother me half as much if the flaws were in places I couldn't see while playing, or if there were less of them. This flaw continues throughout the whole guitar – neck, headstock, and body. Mine was supposed to be a brand new guitar, but came pre-blemished – or pre-played. It has what appears to be pick scrapes on the body below the pickups (where this type of damage is usually found). There is also a mystery substance located behind the bridge in tiny little spots. (Consistent with a sneeze spray). Above the pickups, in approximately the same place your picking hand rests, there is a wide blemish that looks like it happened post-factory. The sound is what you'd expect, the active pickups do sterilize the tone as usual. I recommend upgrading to passive high-output humbuckers for a much warmer tone. The neck feels like a thinner Les Paul type neck. Plenty of resonance and sustain with the string-thru bridge and set-neck assembly. The neck is smooth, but not fast. This guitar's tone control may as well have been left off. Slight roll backs do nothing. And even when you go full sweep, the tone only slightly changes. I pull this guitar out of tune constantly as big wide bends are a part of my style. Locking tuners would be a HUGE upgrade, and will be one of my first mods, after the passive pups, and a coil-tap. It really is a beautiful instrument. But I feel a bit ripped off for paying "new" prices for "used" equipment.Dennis H.
Had a lot of fun playing the C-1. It's a great guitar for Metal n Heavy Rock. If your on a budget this is a no brainer. The guitar has a really nice neck that isn't to fat and feels good in my hands but is not a shredder neck either/ Kinda in the middle/ The EMG's deliver bone crushing lows with a smooth bluesy type high end. Normally not a "Schecter Guy" but was one over by the pure versatility of the instrument. This guitar is also is great for down-tuning so Nails Master of Reality Sabbath n Sleep tones but can also of course due heavier music like Sepultura/ Mayhem etc. The interesting thing is that it sounds great clean – really on the neck pickup n with the right Amp like an Orange Rockerverb MkIII will get you a nice CREAM tone thou is better running thru an ENGL or REVV type amp but either way it's a solid guitar. Only down sides are the EMG"S are "muddy" at times and the tuners are low end, But if your looking for something under a grand and play Metal this Guitar won't let you down- Rawk It!TONY
Songs that were difficult for me on cheaper guitars play great on this. Love the action and responsiveness. Your fingers can dance across the fretboard effortlessly. The active EMG 85/81 pickups pair well with the mahogany body so far. Any weird tones were due to me playing around and experimenting with my Katana amp settings rather than the guitar. It came new and ready to play with minor tuning-the intonation, truss, etc were all dialed in. The finish is beautiful and smooth, the frets were in perfect shape as well.JS

I've had this guitar for roughly 6 months, and I am absolutely blown away by it The locking but hold your strings in tune, for what feels like forever. And if they get out of tune, just use the bridge tuners. I am very pleased with the tone that both the bridge and neck pickups produce, I've never used an active pickup before. But this being my first, I am impressed. The 26.5" scale length is nice, it allows for some lower tunings while keeping the rich and dark tone. With the oem strings, I don't recommend tuning any lower than drop G, I've been experimenting in GCGCFAD, and I've ordered a little heavier strings (2-4 gauges thicker). Playable out of the box…but a slight neck tweaking, raising a few of the saddles, intonating the low E, and lowering the pickups made it VERY nice/playable. The neck it slightly thicker than my "thin" C Apocalypse neck…probably the paint. Out of the box it was OK but had a few slight buzzes and sounded "busy"…too much distortion going on…no definition, no individual note clarity with chords. Now…it's a beauty. Good sustain on all strings…all frets. It sounds "clearer" even when heavily distorted. It's worth the price. I have 3 Schecters now…I bought a Reaper for my lady.Joe Rocker

Overall: Seriously……..I'm baffled, and highly impressed with this limited run that Fender/Jackson is offering, and the quality that is immediately obvious with these guitars. As well, do not be deceived by the price…rather, consider this to be an opportunity. So literally, just a few weeks ago, I purchased the stop tailpiece Fender Special Run variant (which I am upgrading w/EMG 57/66, brushed gold, Tonepros bridge, gold, Earvana compensated nut, Gotoh Magnum SG381 locking tuner, gold, EMG Satin Gold knobs) of this guitar, so therefore, as I am thoroughly impressed, I was compelled to await the arrival of this version (tremolo) through zZounds, yet it became available via Amazon, and I made my purchase just 10 days ago. Okay, so in no particular order, I'm going to start with the Amaranth (of the Purpleheart family/species……yes, that beautiful purple wood seen on many high end guitars)….these are the first two guitars that I now own with this species of wood utilized for the fretboards, and I absolutely love it. At first glance, your eye tends to see it as Ebony, as the wood has quite the dark appearance, which I totally dig (and quite fitting as the guitar is in nat mahogany finish), and it sounds bright, snappy, percussive, and present. As well, I dig the feel, as it has a nice, tight grain pattern.The fretwire- …..ummm, well, ….all level, and comfortable frets. I've not found any dead/high spots, and if so, it's so minimal that it's within a tolerance that allows you to keep low, low action, if you prefer (and the fretwire is just the right jumbo size to allow for the feel of the wire, along with the wood).The tuning machines- ….as I normally upgrade all of my tuning machines to Gotoh SG 381 Magnum locking, I must say, I like these tuners so much, that I'm torn and considering not upgrading, as they are visually stunning, and work quite well. The body of the tuners (where the mechanisms/gears are located) are not thin, and are actually quite robust in size, which provides confidence they'll maintain.The graphite reinforced neck- 5 stars +. Period. You immediately feel it, as soon as you grasp the neck..but also when playing, you can sense a bit more resonance and volume from the notes.The natural mahogany finish- Just…beautiful. Period. (and the feel is quite satisfying, indeed).The Jackson-branded Floyd- …..okay, ……I'm impressed…once again. This is a genuine Floyd Rose licensed unit, as the tremolo block is a genuine Floyd Rose 32mm/nickel-plated block. Look, the gold Fender/Jackson has chosen for these units, is absolutely beautiful….it's a dense, kinda lustrous gold that has a bit more depth than, for instance, an Original Floyd….it's really beautiful (as the colors match via the tuners, locking nut, and tremolo unit). Key feature…..the matching/gold-colored fine tuners via the baseplate. however, my only complaint w/this/these units, is that the very bottoms of the fine tuning screws do not have a flat surface (at the bottom/point of contact) for the string lock screws to make contact with/move smoothly up and down when tuning…rather, it causes the string lock screws/tuning to "skip", and kinda clank, as you feel the bottom of the fine tuning screws jumping/skipping as you fine tune….so you may jump a half-step during turning due to this. It's not a difficult fix, however, as the bottoms of the tuning screws simply need filed/sanded a bit….no biggie (however, if one prefers not to do so, the Original Floyd brass fine tuning screws are an optimal substitute, as they are easy to remove/change. The action of the tremolo is smooth, no noise, and the bar fits snug without those weird unpredictable …"hmmm, i wonder if the bar that comes with the unit will actually fit as it should?" kinda anomalies/moments. (key note- the locking nut is an actual Floyd Rose Special R3, and the neck nut shelf is filed/seated at the proper height…therefore preventing an unplayable kinda high string-to-fret height when fretting….once again, the attention to detail will have you asking…."really?, just $400??"…..it's that good.)The pickups- …not bad. ..not bad at all. I dig 'em. Although, I'm full-on EMG, and I'm goin' with the Het Set, or 57/66 in brushed gold (or, possibly the 81X, 85X in brushed gold). As I am hearing the characteristics of these wood combinations on this guitar, my immediate choices are any of the 3 EMG options listed above, but the Jackson pickups sound great…they really do. Well-balanced and fitting.The 3-way switch- ….nice, solid, and "tight" feeling. The gold-mirrored pickguard- ……..just …sick. The knobs- Very, very nice (and, once again, all the gold selected for this instrument….are an exact match across all components……..impressive).Overall- As I tend to often make purchases based off of my instincts, and relying on them, I'm so pleased I own both the stop tail and tremolo versions of this guitar. Looks and feels great, sounds nice out of the box but the stock pickups are not stellar. However, they will do everything upto 85% of high end pickups. These are actually pretty good. Unless you're very finicky, I don't recommend changing them. Can't say anything bad about it. I modified mine because my cover shield was cracked out of the box and I have not heard anything back about a replacement. I got some unique Lace Humbucker and slapped them on with some mad wiring that splits and parallels the hums. It sounds a lot better than stock. I also added a chrome cover shield.arcticwynd

It is close to being a 5/5 guitar for me. It plays very easily with the condition that the back of the neck feels a bit weird to me right now, I have only played it twice though so through playing this might very well go away. It's a maple neck and the back is non glossy which I like but the thin nitro coating they have sprayed it with feels a bit weird under the hand, it's not sticky in the slightest, it's just nothing like I am used to. Might just be me, and as always this should go away with playing. I like the colour and design of the guitar. I like the neck in general, I am not a metal player and thinner necks aint my thang but this neck is thin but also comfortable with it. The pickups are good, I have two Seymour Duncans in my only other *metal* guitar and I am not sure which set I prefer. This one has a JB in the bridge and a 59 in the neck. The 59 is well capable of Bluesy, rock and even Lead Tones. The bridge JB does Lead and can get clear clean tones especially if you roll some tone off on the guitar. I hear some people complain about the harshness or more like the bite of the JB but I think that's unfair. It's true this guitar does Blues, rock and metal well but for modern metal it is in the ballpark but not quite there. It's more suitied to 80's thrash metal than modern stuff and it does all rock well and you can do Blues with it in the neck position. So it's not an out and out metal guitar and so I like it better for that. It is versatile. I play Pink Floyd on it and it sings. Performs well with any type of rock and if you want Metallica early metal tones and onwards this does it really well. I am not much into modern metal anyway so I am not too bothered. I did Motorhead songs the other day and it kills it. The tuners are Jacksons sealed ones or whatever they are ,so not locking as far as I know but it stays in tune really well, maybe because of the floyd rose on it, which works really well. My first ever Floyd Rose guitar and it impresses me with how well it works and not as hard as you think when it comes to changing strings etc. Lastly the price is very good for what you get which is always a selling point for me.And what yiou get is a proper set of Seymour Duncans and a proper Floyd not the cheap ones you get in low budget offerings in a guitar that looks the part, the headstock alone is worth having it for! I got it for 600 quid. Complete no brainer.R O.
In short: for the price this beast is a solid 9/10, overall and realistically it's 6/10. If you are like me and want to get into 7s – this is the one to go with from all the others entry 7s 😉 Neck: I was adjusting it for 3 days, it's almost flat now and I can get really OK action with it, not low like Ibanez but it's just fine. The only problem is 7th string has to be much higher than the others because it's branching on lower frets. Frets are just OK and there is nothing wrong in terms of craftsmanship. I like this neck, it's somewhat fast and I have no problems getting higher up the neck, 26.5 also helps with that and now I'm damn sure 26.5 is something I always needed in my life, period. I rate this neck with 8/10. 9 would go for playability and action, 6 would go to the wood, craftsmanship, ugly fretboard that looks like it didn't get enough laquer or smth, looks VERY dry and unfinished. Tuners: meeeh, they are OK and holds tuning somewhat, I don't really need to adjust it very often which is great. But getting it tuned is like being in a sad and depresive circle of hell, especially with the 7th string. I rate tuners with 4/10 This would be my second phase upgrade. If they didn't hold the tune like they are (kinda OK), rate would be 2/10. Bridge/intonation: not great not terrible, if I decide to replace it, this would go in second phase with tuners too. I had no problems with intonation. In fact, I managed to get it perfectly intonated, you can really hit those high octaves on any string (15th or 17th) and it don't go out of sound, even on 6th and 7th string. I have to see if I could snap some tune-o-matic but I'm afraid I could lose resonation which is already low as f*. I'm ok with the bridge for now, 7/10. Pickups: they don't really "pick up" the 7th 😀 it is kinda muddy but for this price, they really surprised me. They can really pick up hammers and pull-offs nicely (this goes with the neck/frets also). Kinda high output if you ask me, much more than EMG HZH4 for example on my Schecter. These would be my first upgrade, probably Nazgul and Sentinent. I'd rate them 6/10, but for the price 9.5/10, as I said they kinda impressed me, expectations were much lower. Knobs and electronics: metal knobs are very good, and the switch is average, and so is jack, and I don't really have any complaints here. Wood (sound): low-quality wood, it really sucks with resonation and sustain, but again, this is 200-250 price range and it's not like you're gonna buy this guitar to play some Skynyrd or Knopfler 😀 As I got it out of the box I was not very pleased, I mean it's crafted well and looked nice, nothing like that, but as soon I started to play it (unplugged) I got this feeling like I have a wood plank in my lap. Of course, it is expected in this price range. As soon as I plugged it in and started playing I actually started to not care about that too much. So, for this price I am VERY satisfied, it really got me into 7s and I can finally play some older Periphery, Keith Merrow, Whitechapel, even some Vai and Satriani. You can shred very nicely and easy on this guitar, but you need some nerves to make a decent setup first few days since stock setup was disgusting. Strings? I replaced them immediately because the factory strings were a disaster… I put NYXL 10-59, but the bottom string is still not thick enough for drop A, its muddy but maybe it's just the pickups or personal opinion dunno, next time I'm gonna put Elixirs nano 10-56 but will replace that .56 with .062 or something like that. After only 3 days I decided to write an honest review, I cannot dislike this guitar because it really is a beast for this price. It's that good that I plan to invest another 300 dolars just for pickups and tuner. Also, this is my first Jackson ever, and I must express my respect to get something like this for the price of few good weekends outside. In summary: 6/10, for the price 9/10. Go ahead!
I had never played a 7-string guitar before but had been thinking about it for a while so I decided on this Dinky after seeing the price and reading the reviews. I didn't want to spend a ton of money since I didn't know if I would like the 7-string. After having it and playing it for a few days now, I must say that I'm quite impressed. Like so many of the other reviews say, it's set up pretty well right out of the box. I noticed that it is very lightweight compared to my Telecaster, which I really like. Some people mentioned some rough frets but I didn't notice that on mine; it feels really good. It took some getting used to the extra string but I'm really having fun exploring the new sounds I can get with an extended range. The pickups are decent for the price and I'm really happy with it. I may look at changing them out eventually but for now I'm happy with them. I agree with a lot of the other reviews that say that Jackson could easily charge twice as much for this guitar as they do. All in all, this guitar is excellent value for the price. If you're looking for an entry-level 7-string to noodle with and see if you will like it, you can't go wrong here.Madd Dogg

This guitar is an excellent instrument for all levels of guitarist but perhaps best for intermediates and above. Excellent twangy 12 string sound and well set up straight from the box ensuring ease of playing even up the neck. Stays in tune well. Edge tape may need re-glueing at some stage according to some reviews but all in all a great instrument at a very reasonable price. A major challenge to a much more expensive Rickenbacker at a fraction of the cost! If you want a great electric 12 string look no farther than the Danelectro!
I just got my aqua model and I’m very happy. First off, it was in tune so it was great to be able to play it right away and not go thru nightmare tuning! The fit and finish is excellent as is the sound. Both plugged and unplugged. It plays so easily that I found myself playing leads in all positions. Unlike most 12 strings of the past. Couldn't find this guitar in the stores so I pulled the trigger and ordered online. I don't listen to Rancid, so I bought this guitar more because it's a baldwin-era gretsch with a cool finish and filtertron pups. The pickups are crisp and clear and take dirt well, love the control over tone with all the knobs. I am impressed with these blacktop pups. They sound very close to the hs filters in my 5120. I see no need to change them. The top is thicker than my 5120, binding all over the place, beautiful headstock and wider body. The action was high and I set the intonation, but otherwise no work needed. Here's the thing, the flat finish does wear off leaving shine spots where your arms and hands come into contact. Like on the neck and upper body, and where I rest my pinky or fingers while picking. It looks cool to me but something you should be aware of before buying. First off ! I highly recommend this 12 string to everyone! i have now owned this guitar for almost a year now. Before I bought this Martin dx2e I shopped around and went to a bunch of different guitar stores to compare different brands and see the difference. I was after a really good full sound with no string noise , I definitely did not want a lament top and real wood sound that would appreciate more and more in time. I compared a taylor, and it was great but the price was a little crazy, for what was afforded I didn’t care what brand of guitar i was going to choose, all that mattered to me was the tone and feel , I tried a guild 12 string and again it was really nice as well but I found it had a lot of mid high tones . Again I was looking for a certain sound that would cater to my own sound, style and feel . After shopping around I chooses this Martin DX2e for its great natural sound and the feel , the price was definitely unbeatable and I still can’t believe how good this guitar sounds! Amazing guitar! The next big factor was now where to buy it , Sam ash? Guitar center ? I found American musical “AMS” was amazing to purchase this Martin from, it showed up in just 2/3 days protected and the customer service was unbelievable! I recently purchased my Martin DX2E 12 string from AMS and I love it. I purchased my Martin GCE16 about a year ago from AMS and I have never heard of them before this. I tried to order the same guitar from Guitar Center and it come in damaged, so I returned it. I then tried to order the same guitar from Musicians friend. The online site said it was in stock. I even paid for 2 day delivery, but it never showed up. After 2 weeks I called and they told me the guitar was out of stock. They also told me they should of called or emailed but they don't know why they didn't.(TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM MUSICIANS FRIEND).This is when I found AMS. I called AMS and they were VERY helpful and easy to deal with. I ordered my VERY FIRST MARTIN GUITAR from AMS and have been very pleased. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this value brand guitar. The action was actually low and playable after tuning it out of the box. I was wanting to try my hand at a 12 string and found some used ones for more money that were basically unplayable. Then I found this new Oscar Schmidt on e-bay, and figured for the money, it's better than paying double for an unplayable wooden box. An extraordinarily well designed and made guitar. The scale is a bit shorter than most guitars so it's easier to play, the bevel on the body makes it more comfortable to play, the fit and finish is perfect. It sounds good acoustically and plugged in. Really nice for finger style, and surprisingly good with a light pick. The back and sides are layered Sapele wood, the top is solid Sitka. The neck is maple. The tuners keep it in tune. I've played quite a few smaller body guitars in my 4 decades of playing, and this one is right at the top of the list along with Martin 00 and 000 models. I've been playing guitar for more than 45 years. I played hundreds of gigs with various bands in my younger years and still perform on rare occasions. I still play and practice every day and play many informal get togethers for small crowds. I own a Taylor NS42ce, 514ce, 312ce, 812ce 1st edition and a 914ce. I purchased this guitar for settings I wouldn't want to risk my more expensive guitars doing such as outdoors, campfire gigs or when I just wanted to throw it in the car in case of an impromptu party or get together jam. I can't tell you how surprised I was when I tuned up and started playing this guitar. I'm not going to try to tell you it plays or sounds like my 914ce, but I am going to tell you it plays and sounds amazing for a guitar twice it's price or more. This guitar now sets on a stand next to my desk in my office and gets played every day. I had been looking for a reasonably priced mid-range acoustic guitar. In most of the reviews I read they said that the Taylor Academy was a great "beginners" guitar. I have to say this is an incredible guitar all around and works well for any level of guitar player. Absolutely loved being able to go into the Sam Ash store and look at the guitar. I usually wait awhile if I am going to review something and after buying selling and trading over 50 guitars over a lifetime I am well over the "Newest Toy" syndrome but I absolutely love this guitar way more than I ever expected I will. I love everything about it so far, from the important stuff like tone and playability to the superficial stuff like it's cool vintage cream paint job. I have yet to restring the guitar and my only concern is durability. I have one other Danelectro guitar that I have owned for close to a year and have had no issues with. Other than that I have no experience with Danelectro guitars. I should note that there is nothing about either guitar that leads me to suspect poor quality. The 12 string came with a nice straight neck and immaculate finish. It was very playable right out of the box. I should also note that this is my first 12 string electric guitar. I am primarily an acoustic guy and have owned several 12 string acoustics over my lifetime. I understand the pressure those strings put on a guitar's neck which is why I wonder how well this will hold up in the future. Providing it does it feels like a steal at this price. Of all guitars I have owned I have never had one turn so many heads when I went out shopping for a case. It's a shame Danelectro won't make or commission cases for their guitars. If it matched the aesthetics of their instruments they would probably be a hit as well.Patrick
The best thing about this guitar is how nicely and easily it plays. It seems to sing out and chime from any note that you effortlessly put your finger on! You also cannot beat the play-ability of this neck with most any guitar at this price level! I spent over two years shopping for an electric 12-string guitar. I own many 6-string acoustic and electric guitars, plus a very high-end 12-string acoustic, but I've always wanted a high-end 12-string electric too. I played many of the best brands, but I just could not justify the cost of some of these 12-string electrics… yes, they played great, but the cost was insane, and I just didn't believe they were worth it. Danelectro recently upgraded their 12-sting electric guitar, and for the price, I could not resist any longer. I figured if it was no good, then no worries – since I spent such little money on it. However, when I received it today, I was COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY! I actually think that Danelectro is giving these guitars away for what I paid for it! Something almost doesn't make sense…. Anyway, I cannot put this thing down. It sounds great (dare I say as good, or perhaps better than the "R's" I tried out?). Not to put down "R", since I already own a 1990 360, but this Danelectro is a KEEPER! At a fraction of the cost, I have a really professional sounding and playing 12-string electric! 99% of the tone of an all-solid guitar with the added durability and aesthetics of layered Koa. Should it be priced the same as the 000-13e? Debatable. Should it be judged as a "layered", "plywood" or "HPL" guitar? I don't think so. Essentially, Martin sandwiched two fine Koa veneers (not a cheap wood by any means) over a solid African mahogany core. How fine is the veneer? No idea. Does it affect the tone? Minimally. My guess is they're covering an aesthetically imperfect but otherwise perfectly fine piece of mahogany. My Koa B/S look great but I've seen others that are truly spectacular. If sustainability matters to you – this guitar hits the mark. The black tuners and headstock, black Richlite fretboard, and black pickguard contrasted against the mother-of-pearl rosette and fretboard inlays is just on another level. It's super comfortable to play, it sounds fantastic (again, a 1% difference in tone compared to the 000-13e IMO), it has added durability, and the solid spruce top will sound even better over time. I personally love the look and feel of the Richlite fretboard. The built-in tuner is super convenient. The electronics are tucked away and don't impact the look of the guitar at all. Do I wish it came with a hard case? Sure. The gig bag is great quality though. Unless you're bringing it on a plane or moving, the gig bag is more than enough protection. I originally wanted to sell it for a 000-13e (which was out of stock everywhere I went) but every time I get an offer, I can't seem to let it go. I do think it should be $100-$200 less than the 000-13e but still well worth the price, especially if you really want the Koa look. It's a keeper for me.Alex C
Owner/player of 2 1960's Martin D-18's,purchased to play in church praise band plugged in and avoid taking my vintage Martins to gigs in cold/hot weather & wild crowd extremes. Also moving to smaller guitars lately with shoulder pain issues. The KOA veneer back and sides are more beautiful than the pictures suggest up close. Love the familiar sound of the mahogany however which is the interior wood. Black tuner knobs add some nice contrast with the woods. Tremendously easy to play with nice low action/setup. Known as a fingerstyle size guitar but I'm more of a flat picker and it works great for that as well. Battery installation was a bit confusing and not clear in instructions but alas I wasn't familiar with this particular battery setup. I haven't plugged it in yet but expect it to sound great as I have some experience with Fishman pickups. Sounds like a guitar that should cost at least $1000 more. Very happy, I upgraded it to a hard shell case as I'm not a fan of gigbags but the gigbag it comes in is nicer than the usual gigbag. Highly recommended.Bill
Simply put this is a great guitar. I bought it because I also own a D18 E Retro and, with the price tag of the D18, I was always hesitant to take it out when I’d be playing a hot, humid summertime outdoor gig or something like that. The Richlite fretboard is incredibly stable, the guitar stays in tune, and the new Fishman Matrix electronics are outstanding. I actually reach for this one over the D18 the majority of the time.
