I own several cigar box guitars – some I built – some I bought – usually fretted four strings that I mando tune. I wanted a three string for slide – I liked that this had a disk with a slide technique lesson. I was more than pleased – as an instrument, it's as good as most any CBG – they are all pretty crude at best. This one was easy to assemble – holds tune – sounds good acoustic or electric. There were some comments on it not using an actual cigar box, but a factory-made stylized resonator box. While this is true, it is at least as good as a cigar box, and I can understand why they broke that way for consistency and ease of build (which as I said, was super easy). Aesthetically, most people would probably prefer a real cigar box, but come on – it's like a uke – cheesy is part of the shtick. The lesson is good – play along CD and a book – comes with a good glass slide. I recommend it – worth the list price – all the better with the discounts.JoeFromSD

This is a great way to learn slide guitar. It is small & easy to learn. The book is full of great info. The CD is great, with back tracks, A tuning track so you do not need to buy a tuner, as long as you have something to play the CD in. It would be a good idea to buy a cheep tuner. As far as the price you just can't beat it. You can buy one for any wear from under $20.00 to $59.95. you just have to look around for a good price. Even at $30.00 to $ 40.00 is well worth it. The sound of the guitar very good and a small amp helps the sound but is not a must. Also you can take this any ware. In all this is a great product and was well thought out. I wanted a three string cigar box guitar and between a black friday discount and backstage pass points, I couldn't pass this up. Some reviewers complain that it's cardboard but domestic cigar boxes are predominantly cardboard. Also, Fender recently built a cardboard Strat that couldn't be told from a "real" Strat in a blind test. Build time was about ten minutes. I ran the strings around the tuners contrary to the directions so the string paths were straight. Sounds great acoustic and also great amplified. The only thing lacking is markers on the side of the neck. Maybe not sturdy enough for roughneck kids but a good introduction to the cigar box genre. Nice slide included.Mike

This is the first set of (guitar) tools I've owned; always just used whatever I had around in the garage. This set comes in a great zippered case. It has everything you need in it from nice quality dikes to cut strings, to various cleaning cloths, to all the hex head and small screwdrivers, etc that you need to work on your guitar. It's great. This is a nice piece of repair kit. I am just a beginner guitar player, but I still believe that if you want to play well you have to keep your equipment updated and in good working order even if you are a beginner. This kit is a great opportunity for someone who doesn't know what repair tools someone needs. It comes with everything that you need to do minor maintenance on your guitar.Lance

I got a used electric on Ebay that had horrible intonation. I dug out my old Homespun Tapes video on guitar maintenance & repair only to have the VCR eat the tape. The video was no longer published. I found another nice looking one by the Learn & Master folks–but too expensive. So….Back to Ebay. The seller "1dayx" had a copy of this & for about 1/3 the price of one of the DVD's, I got this book which comes with a video CD. Set up problems solved with a book AND video examples. Even more, this book is really comprehensive, covering both acoustic and electric guitars. With the video examples, I'm now able to do my own basic set up & maintenance. GREAT VALUE!studiohope

Our son got into guitars in a big way. So my wife enthusiastically purchased him a Fender Jazz Bass, a Gibson LP and a Taylor nylon acoustic, all second hand at a third of the cost of brand new, but all in mint condition. Knowing little about guitar maintenance / setup, my frugal wife discovered it would quickly add up taking all these second hand guitars into the "experts". Using Dan's book, we re-strung the Fender and adjusted, the Gibson was within specification and the "bird nest" at the Taylor's stock head was tidied up. We also have a Stratocaster copy (Cimar by Ibanez) that we purchased for $50 years ago. With Dan's book, we discovered virtually every conceivable guitar setting on this Strat copy was completely out! With a new set up strings, several hours' set up work, we got the Strat copy within acceptable specification and sounding quite good. Dan's book is an excellent reference for the DIY-er, along with anecdotal stories of various guitar artists whom he's dealt with over the years. Dan's book covers both acoustic and electric guitars. Next project is learning how to play them!BigTony

I was really surprised at how good this amp sounds. Years ago I tried Line 6 and was not at all happy with the tone; but this is another story. It does take me awhile to dial in a specific classic rock tone, but when I do, it sounds better than any other amp that I've tried. I have tried the Marshall Code, Blackstar id Core, Vox Valvetronix, Boss Katana; as well as some all tube amps. The only other amp that is a close 2nd is the Fender Mustang GTX; also a great amp. The Spider V is fairly easy to operate. It offers lots of choices for amp models and cabinets. I like that it has variations of a mic'd cabinet. The parametric eq is a plus. I haven't played around too much with the effects yet, so I can't comment on that. The only negative thing I could say is that when you're editing a preset and want to hear how it sounds before you save it, you only have a short time before it goes back to the Home Screen. This really is a small price to pay for the quality of the amp and all the versatility it has. I like the App too. Musicians Friend got me a great on this as well; and their agent is following up making sure that I'm satisfied. The funny thing is that I came across this by accident. I placed an order for a Peavey amp that was on back order. I called Peavey multiple times, but they never returned my call. I also emailed them, but they didn't respond to that either. As far as I'm concerned, Peavey doesn't have any customer support.crrkr

Been playing about a year, so my review is from the perspective of a complete newbie. The things I like- Lots of presets, mobile app functions, computer interface, and loads of user created effects available. Nice and loud, but no real basis of comparison to say if clarity is better or worse than other comparable amps. Don't likes- The micro-usb interface. I had to get an adapter and it's just not as good a connection as nearly anything else would be. IMHO, micro-usb is far too flimsy. Connecting to PC is far more problematic than just using the spider mobile app. It's probably a little more complicated than it should be for a beginner, but it's feature rich for the money.Nic T

I had a Line 6 120w amp for years that I regrettably sold a while ago and was looking for another amp. I looked at all the amp reviews I could find and decided that the new Katana was the way to go. I got the Katana home and absolutely loved it but the second day I had it it started a really loud buzzing that I couldn't stop. It probably was an easy fix but the fact is the amp was way too powerful for my purposes and their software wasn't compatible with the new Catalina OS. I returned and started looking again. I saw the 60w Spider V and the price was excellent so I made an on the spot decision to buy another Line 6 and I'm really glad I did. The tones this amp can get are incredible. There are so many amp models and cabs that you can dial in pretty much any tone you want from a crispy snapback country clean to the most vicious heavy metal and everything in between. You can use the presets as they are or you can use them as a baseline and tweak to your own liking or you can start from scratch and build your own rig from the ground up. The controls are intuitive and easy to use but there are some features where you'd have to be a professional to really know how to use or even care to use. The software and the mobile app are so easy to use and give you all the options at your fingertips. The amp comes with a lot of presets that I find are completely useless but there are a lot that are excellent as I already talked about. There are only four empty slots for your own custom presets and I wish there were more but if you use the mobile app you can have your own tone library on there. I bought the FBV3 foot controller so that gives me a lot of flexibility to have various effects. One of the limitations is the lack of good effects though. There's enough that if you work at it you can get a decent sound but there could be some better ones. Overall I would recommend the amp. Don't listen to the naysayers or the amp snobs, it's a quality amp and extremely versatile.Just Plain Joe

The guitar itself seems to be built fairly well, the action seems good on it also. The outer edges of the frets seem a little sharp to me, which can be filed/sanded down to remove that. The guitar was packaged good and no visible damage has been noticed. The thing that I have noticed is, the amp is cheesy and has alot of reverb in it, which can be annoying. The one item that was not included is any documentation on the guitar itself, nothing, nada. I guess they expect people to know what the strings are, how to adjust the tone controls, and care for the item blindly.balance

This guitar has served me well for a little over 2 year it's every thing you need you could probably upgrade the amp to a better one. the guitar has held up but I'm noticing chips in the epoxy other than that excellent kitAndrew

Very nice guitar and amp. Amp sounds really good for size. Junk the strings and replace. Frets need to have ends sanded off a little. Stick out a little. Annoying. Other than that it sounds great. Very nice finish. I would buy a case if I traveled with it. Bag gives little protection. Its definitely a 4 star guitar combo. Would buy again. The electronic tuner is a good place to get started. Go buy a good one otherwise.crabtreedennis

This book is great if you are just getting into guitar repair as well as those who are already doing guitar repair. Normally I would have just thrown away a guitar that has been badly damaged as the ones shown in this book, but after seeing how these guitars can be restored, I now will repair them or have them repaired. I also particularly like the section on refinishing as any type of refinishing, partial or complete can be difficult especially if you are not skilled in that area. I even apply those techniques on refinishing to cabinetry.jkopticalinc

I had to buy an Allparts, this "genuine Fender" is NOT correct spec for either true vintage or reissues. The holes are spaced about 2-3 mm closer together than they should be, this means if you tried to put it on vintage or reissue, or in my case an exact replica I built, the whole thing will not fit. Perhaps if you drilled your holes to match this one than it would fit. These facts are only about the GOLD version, not the chrome version, for some un-concieveable reason, Fender's gold plated version is off spec, but their chrome version is correct. That said, the gold plating is better than the gold Allparts, but that's about all.b_u_z_z_y

I bought the Fender input jack plate for my Washburn strat style guitar. It fit my guitar perfect as well as the PureTone brand input jack. No modification needed.superhornet996

I wanted to replace the ferrule that came on my Roland G5 Strat as it has a much shallower angle so the cable sticks out at more than 45 deg. Really tacky. [Not sure if it was original, or if the previous owner had replaced it for some reason.] I tried a cheaper alternative [about half the price, but turned out to be the same as the G5 one.] By contrast, this is the 'real thing'. Identical to the nice ferrule on my Roadhouse Strat. The mounting surface for the socket is nearly at 90 deg to the lead-in slope, so the cable comes out parallel to the ferrule and sits at around 30 deg to the actual guitar face. Much better look and feel, It also seems to be made of a slightly heavier gauge stainless steel and is nicely finished. If you want the real thing, buy the real thing!wendy77bb

I watched a Fender video of the amp and was very impressed with the capabilities and sound quality. When the amp arrived I plugged in my Telecaster and tried the first few presets. The sound coming out of this amp was dreadful. It had a flat, drab sound. It was like a transistor radio next to a Bose radio. The Mustang just sounds awful. Don’t waste your money on the piece of junk.Roger

Really impressive feature set for the money. Way to go Fender and AMS! I love the simple,sleek design and easy to use interface. Getting a wide variety of tones has never been easier and the Fender Tone App is cool too and works as advertised but it's just as easy to edit/store any and all parameters right from the front panel.The design of the amp handle is smooth and I appreciate the Velcro straps in the back for securing footswitch and power cord.I bought this amp for use in my home/project studio but would use at a gig no problem.It is certainly loud enough. You will not find more amp for your dollar than the LT50! Very pleased with this purchase. I ordered late in the day on Friday and received the amp on Monday. Thanks AMS!Paul D

I am upgrading from the LT25 to more power, larger sound. The LT50 is the big bother to the LT25 and they have the same preset programing functions. I like the Fender tone both amps produce, the LT50 gives more power and volume. The 30 preset are usable and it allows you to program 30 additional preset base the modeling settings. I am using the LT50 for studio recording, it has a speaker line output jack in the rear cabinet, which is a good to add to the recording mix.NYCScotto

I use this amp at home exclusively. Even in a large room, the decibels can be quite high particularly if you are looking for that magic place where soft picking produces warm cleans, and digging in produces the growl. The amp does this magic spot very well – at about 5 on the knob for me. Just listen to many of the great guitar recordings of the last half century and you can hear what this amp can do. And if you're like me and have a distaste for pedals, you'll probably love this amp, as I do. I just wish Fender didn't have the weird bias against master volume type controls. Even this little amp could be much friendlier doing it's thing at lower decibels. Playing it at mid-volume in an apartment is probably a recipe for eviction, especially if Gladys Kravitz is your neighbor.J Small

I actually had this amp before but I sold it, the previous one had a rattling sound around volume of 5 and was overwhelmingly bassy, the bass drowned out the other frequencies but it was a great sounding amp. I purchased a different amp with bass and treble controls but it didn't sound good like the Champ. So I decided to get the Champ again and planned on getting a equalizer for it. So far with this one I don't need an equalizer. The bass is less powerful but good enough, it gets stronger as the volume is increased but it doesn't sound unbalanced with the other frequencies. This Champ volume actually increases all the way to 12 while the previous one maxed out at 9 and didn't change when turned pass 9. It's only about 15 pounds too. I haven't taken it out to rehearsal as of yet but so far at home I'm pleased with the sound. I'm surprised how much different it is from my previous Champ sound wise. The other Champ has a newish yellow looking tweed and the speaker was royal blue. It was so cute 😂 the new one has a darkish yellow tweed and a black speaker, this one actually looks like a vintage Fender Amp, like a NOS model. It has that classic Fender clean and full sound that I like. It's a great amp. I would recommend it and it's like owning a piece of history.SQJ

This is a first-impression review. I own this amp, but no electric guitar (yet) I bought the amp from Musician's Friend. I had given up on electric guitars and just picked on my acoustic from time-to-time. My kid(s) are/will be taking music lessons and I have gotten the desire to play again. First thing I wanted to do was get a quality, small amp and the Champ is perfect. I wanted a small amp that was high-quality that wasn't going to be cumbersome and something my kids could one day use. I have tried out 5 guitars plugged directly to the amp with no effect pedals. A Gibson 137, Gibson 335, Gibson SG, Fender American Strat with noiseless pickup and an American Telecaster with Texas Specials. The Strat I played was horrible, the Gibson SG was way to clean. The Gibson 137 and 335 had their sweet spots with the amp depending on the volume, but the Telecaster sounded amazing with the bridge pickup in every volume setting. It is my opinion that this amp is best paired with an honest, working-man's Telecaster. On The Gibsons, especially the SG the tone at the bottom end of the volume was very dull and didn't sharpen up till the volume was raised substantially. The Telecaster with the Bridge pickup was amazing with the Amp played at its highest volume setting. Disclaimer: The Telecaster was the last guitar I played and by then the tubes were plenty warm and I could smell that fresh new tube odor emitting from the amp. I will close with this, it's a great amp, a pure tonal machine, but keep in mind it's old-timey technology. The Tone and sound you want has to do so much with the position that you strike the strings and the volume setting. The amp sounds very differently depending on the volume setting.Tone Tone

I have a collection of other jewel lenses that I have tried with a Mesa Single Rectifier head. Out of those, I was using an amber lens, but wanted to try violet. The lens offered here threaded in roughly, and took several turns back and forth to become smoother. It seems there were sticking points in the threads. Also, and the biggest issue for me, is that the lens is too translucent near the edges vs. the center portion when lit. I would have preferred something more even rather than darker in the center. I did not bother to return the lens.brushtoohard

In 1968 I saw a band that had a Fender Amplifier with a Purple amp Jewel. I could not believe it, since all Fenders had Red ones. It was so cool, I wanted one all my life. AES offers many colors! I bought a purple one and I am now the envy of my peers. FYI, The "violet" one they offer looks red when you turn it on (not good) but the purple is spot on! AES is fast and reasonable. So, I purchased this because I need a nice kit for setup. one thing to know is several items dont work for bass. Also all of the items are pretty cheap. In retrospect I should have gone online and purchased a leather bag and individually purchased the items needed to setup a bass or guitar. The flashlight is cheap, the screwdriver is bottom of the rung. The clippers are cool, they are spring loaded but also poor quality (doesn't want to click light gauge strings towards the tip. The multitool doesn't open well and it super cheap quality. It wouldn't even fit into the truss hole and it was the wrong size for my Ibanez… If it was the right size, I couldn't get it to work… so there's that. the best feature is the zip case. its the most well made part of the whole deal. very disappointing.SamuelPlayzon

I am a lifelong guitarist and thought I knew how to correctly set up my own guitars (better than most guitar shops I've tried) but this book taught me more. I recommend it to anyone who wants to look after their own gear or move on to kit builds. Very goodpjsguitars
