I have been an Ibanez guy for awhile, especially with their extended range instruments. I used to have an SR305 bass and upgrading to this SR505 was a great choice. Beautiful finish, was set up pretty well from the factory, and has some awesome Bartolini pickups for a gritty tone. The financing options from AMS make this an affordable upgrade!Steve

As a learner who has been playing a cheap 4 string the move to this 5 string was an excellent experience due to the slender neck. The paint job is out of this world and the hardware oozes quality. I spent a few weeks trying out basses at my local music stores before settling on this bass. What set this bass apart from the others was the tone and the various tones I could get out of it, as well as it's playability. The active EQ is far better than the passive EQ's that I find on other basses. For example, the EQ on Jackson basses are all but useless. There was very little tone difference when varying the EQ controls on Jackson basses. But on this Ibanez, you really hear the difference in the tone settings. The Ibanez has a bass, mid, and treble tone control. So you can really dial in the tone you're looking for. Also, the individual string height adjustment on the Ibanez lets me tailor the action to exactly how I like it. The guitar is well balanced weight wise and so hangs naturally when I play it. I have a BC Rich mockingbird bass which is terribly weighted ad the headstock drops to the floor if I don't have my fret hand supporting the neck. The string spacing on the Ibanez 5 string is good, and I can still play slap bass on it. All the knobs on the bass (except the volume knob) have a mid point that you can feel as your adjusting the tone controls, so you know exactly where "flat" is. I really like that feature.beaglebuddy

Unexpectedly nice looking bass. 2 piece fllamed maple body with a darker burst than the website photos suggested. Not bookmatched, but a nicely figured body. Super versatile preamp and nice sounding, powerful and noise free pickups. Fast, slim neck and good quality hardware. I've tweaked the set up over a couple of weeks and it's playing really well. A far nicer bass than I expected for the price, after some playing in I think it will be better than my mid 90s SR. I bought this bass to record with. I run a consumer level Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and plug this bass straight in and use Ableton Live 9 as my DAW. This bass sounds amazing, I have been playing for over twenty years and my go-to rig was a 1974 Ampeg SVT with an early eighties Fender Precision Bass, so I would like to think bass tone is something I know a bit about. I am not using an amp, micing an amp or cab OR using a DI and this bass sound fat and warm in any mix. The electronics are great, the Bartonlinis can really get any tone possible. The only negative I would put down is that you do get a little buzz if you boost the treble control, normal in my experience and I won't be boosting treble with a bass, ever, so it doesn't concern me. To be clear, there is no buzz in the neutral position or when you cut the treble, just when you boost it up in what would be the 6 to 10 range. I bought the blackberry finish on an open box deal, it was in MINT condition, arrived in great shape, I did have to tighten the nut around the pick-up blend pot, it loosened up in transit, I backed off the set screw on the knob and then adjusted the nut, put the knob back, tightened the set screw and it was perfect. NO BIG DEAL. I also adjusted the neck to dead-straight, my preferred set-up and it plays and sounds ridiculously fine. The only other bass I have owned that sounds this good was an Alembic Epic and it was over $2K, it also had so much adjustablility that you could really get yourself in trouble. I believe that is a compliment to Ibanez. It is amazing what they can do for the price-point and I was skeptical for years about these basses, YEARS, not until I realized I didn't need top-of-the-line Gibsons and Fenders did I even consider these basses. You pay a lot for those names! Ibanez has the production down! They CNC the body (saves time and labor-costs), they don't cut corners on the electronics and provide a quality product for the money. Unbelievable. I plan on picking up another Ibanez bass soon. Check out their Terra Firma, 35" scale 5-string, looks like a dream and I can't imagine the quality Ibanez would put out for around $1K!Trail Rider

Overall this is a great bass and has become in a short period of time one of my favorites, and I own 17 bass guitars. The neck is very thin and not quite as wide as other 5 strings which I like as I don't have gigantic hands. In fact, this was a major factor in my purchase. This guitar is probably heavier than most would expect but it certainly feels great in your hands. And if you're not a heavy handed player, the action can be set incredibly low and still be playable with no buzz. Well, at least on mine and with no truss adjustment. The pups are great and the active preamp permits highly dynamic control of the tone. This is just a great bass guitar to play, simple as that. Downsides? Well, there were a few. The cutout at the G string side, when running my finger around it, I noticed a slight indent. Almost as if someone sanded it too hard in one spot. I found this odd as mass-produced guitar bodies are computer milled and should require very limited manual smoothing. Its not visible although I can feel it. But since I had no other real issues with the guitar, it was not enough for me to return it and wind up with a guitar that didn't play as well as this one. Its also easy to scratch the finish as its only stain with a light protective coating, somewhat like a wooden table. So be careful with those giant trucker belt buckles! The jack input is also a little odd. I would have preferred an input on the bottom edge. These downsides however were no big deal and I'm more than satisfied with it. If I wasn't aware of this bass and its price, if someone were to put it in my hands, I would have guessed its price as much higher.Sky Chief

I got the 4 string version of this model. It is smooth and delightful to play, and I have yet to find a bad setting. Very powerful low end and clear high end, which I appreciate when soloing. So, I can't speak specifically to the 5 string, but assuming it's like the 4 string, go ahead and pay a little extra for this model. You won't be disappointed. The only con is that it's a little on the heavy side, which of course pays dividends in terms of the commanding sound. I am a short woman, yet have no problem playing for, say, 3 hours at a time while standing.Coyote Sal

This is a professional level instrument. The Japanese craftsmanship is stunning, neck as close to perfection as I've ever seen on a bass right out of the box. If you like your action low, this bass will let you get lower than I'd thought possible. Sound is excellent thanks to the custom Bartolini pickups. I'd recommend holding off on buying a lower level instrument, saving some more cash and giving a try to the Ibanez Prestige 5000 series.AndreK

Ibanez knocked it out of the park with this one. I purchased one of these a little over 3 years ago in Roadster Orange and still have it. In it's price range I think this is the best bass you can get. I've had much more expensive (Modulus FB5 Flea) basses and much cheaper. This is a well balanced bass and you get ALOT of higher end features for your money with it. I have been in love with the fat, boosted sound of Ibanez Soundgear basses since I started playing as a teenager. And the feel is amazing. No sharp fret edges, great action. Highly recommended if you are looking for a bass in this price range. I tried the Sterling Sub 5 and absolutely hated it. It's garbage compared to these.TW

Hey guys I wrote a review for this guitar and it was a 4 star review, I have made some corrections if you will about this Bass 1) The pots are cheap, but I had 2 that simply weren't tightened down, simply pull the knob off and gently but firmly tighten the nut on the pot and your golden. 2) I made some ever so slight adjustments on the bridge saddles on the E string and the G string on mine all it took was about a half turn on both screws now zero buzzing and still plays great virtually unnoticeable playing wise. So with just a little patience and a touch of work You will have an outstanding instrument to play live or record with. Great Affordable Bass Guitar by IbanezPerryman

I have very expensive basses and everything in between . I don't want to take those expensive heavy basses everywhere. This bass replaced a MIM Fender Precision bass. I could not have been more pleased with the performance of this bass. The first thing I did was take it to my guitar guy and have it setup to my liking (as always). It was set up fairly good Straight Out of the Box. This is now the bass that I use when I play at Disney. Construction is awesome but what really surprised me is the sound is every much a Fender precision or even that of a beefy jazz. More versatile than my MIM Fender precision was. The bass is light so after playing all day I don't feel like I've been carrying bricks around my shoulders. The action is exceptionally smooth. I think this is a great intermediate bass for anyone – 5 or 4 strings it doesn't matter. I have seen where some people don't like the bass boost feature. Always question what they're using the base for. If you play a lot of death metal then this may not be the best choice for you. But if you're like most of us playing anything from Jazz to R&B and pop on a regular basis this is an excellent choice for you. There are a lot of choices in this price range. However, the quality of this instrument's Construction outshines most of them in my opinionTank

I have been a bass player for 30 years. I was happy that my 13 year old daughter wanted to take up the instrument. She learned Ukelele well enough that I was willing to listen but no way was she using my basses because I see how she takes care of her room. Her arms were too small anyway so I researched this Ibanez mikrobass. What a delight! The walnut finish is fantastic and the tone when unplugged is tremendous. Plugged in, it was a little clackety-clack and the tone knob is almost literally nothing so I put daddario XL Flatwounds 50-100 (a recent discovery from which I will never return) and took care of that problem. The tuners seem a little slack when Im tuning it up. If I were to make a change, it would be the tuners. But theyre fine enough. It is exactly the size of my six string guitars so I was able to devote a quality gig bag that I dont use much for the cause. My daughter is encouraged by it although she hasnt quite dug in yet. However if she decides not to play after all, this will remain in my collection. Its just SO FUNboredofthisalready

I play in my home studio and record my bass along with mp3's of my favoritie songs, I make videos for self critique and to share with other bass players in my FaceBook bassists group. I recently sold my Ibanez SR755 5 string because I was not thrilled with the B string sound. Now I find the B sounds better to my ear with this bass that costs one third of the SR755…Amazing. I prefer passive electronics and the GSR205SM with it's Phat EQ give me the best of both worlds or active or passive. With the EQ turned counter clockwise the bass sounds like a passive and as you turn up the EQ the bass responds well and gives me an edge on the sound. Best of all there is no Floppy B string farty tone. the B sounds more musical. I want to address the weight of this bass. It is light as a feather especially after playing my Warwick. I can play for extended periods of time without having back pain issues. As to the statement of other reviewers about this being a great beginner's bass, let me add that in the hands of a seasoned player it sounds and feels as good as you'd want it to sound as well. This bass sounds totally different than my Fenders and Warwick and I find that to be advantageous.Preston

Overall: I bought this without playing it, but was very pleased right out of the box. My fingers were black after a few minutes of playing due to the dirty strings, but that didn't dampen my opinion by any means (but good idea to purchase a new set of strings along with the bass). Bought the Walnut Finish (looks more expensive) for use with my SC-300 Boss Looper (also purchased from zZounds). It sounds great! I'm not onstage playing head banger metal, so don't need that rumbling low end anyway. But the pickup configuration def gives you a lot of low end. Even though I've been playing guitar and bass for over 30 years, I would use this bass onstage, AND more importantly, if you are introducing anyone to playing bass – this will be a much easier learning bass due to the size. It still feels like a 'bass' and it's not tiny or anything, but it doesn't feel clunky like a bigger bass does. I'm looking forward to using this for a long while, and assuming it holds up over the next few months I'll likely grab another one just to have a backup. Don't hesitate if you need for a recording bass, or onstage. And def great for a beginner to keep them from losing interest due to most basses being too large for them.Jason

I have been waiting on this style to come back for quite awhile. This was the one bass I have been missing in my collection, now I can't say that any longer. Ok… first off, the fanned frets are amazing. The extra scale is incredible… If you need it. The tonal qualities are insane! The pickups and electronics are on point. The finish is stunning. The neck… well… it took me a while to feel comfortable with it. It’s “chunky.” I had a hard time getting it set up to make it feel good. I played one of these in a guitar shop in late 2019 and fell in love with it. This bass just fits my hands, plays effortlessly, and has perfect balance. You might think that the fanned frets would be an issue but if anything it adds to the comfort. Out of the box, it was set up really well and the intonation was spot on.Mark

I was shocked by the quality and setup on this entry-level Ibanez Bass. Either the Ibanez Indonesia factory has stepped up their game, or AMS at least doesn't ship out the duds. The Ibanez GSR105EX Bass is a nice value bass. The neck was straight. The action was nice and low. The neck profile made it very comfortable to play. The passive pickup has quite a growl to it. It is so light. Mine weighed just over 6 pounds. Strings were the weak link on the bass, which you would expect on a bass at this price. They were really rough on the fingers, even for an experienced bass player. They were changed out immediately, and it greatly improved the sound, and they saved my fingers from further trauma. I enjoy playing it. I think it is a good starter bass for those who want to explore a 5 string without a big investment.Pete H.

1st-great price for what you get – no more or less. 2nd- Re: Mahogany Oil naming – this guitar hasn't ever been in the Zipcode of Mahogany but I guess the stain is Mahogany colored – sort of. Review: The bridge is fine and the intonation and action is fine. This guitar is like my old 'Cuda – the harder you drive it the better it gets. It shines on more aggressive stylings; tho I don't like slapping and popping this thing sounds excellent for that. I use this mainly for recording so as far as sound – the one giant 'bucker is fine as I run Bass thru EQ's and compressors anyway on my DAW. Having the low B, 5 extra notes is the key here for stoop-down bad-ass low-ness. For 2 bills it's too nice. •••• d:DDean

I really wanted this bass for a long time it just looked so cool in the sea foam green roasted maple neck. I just couldn't get out of my bubble on a p bass. I finally said screw it and give it a try and I'm glad I did. First off i opened this it came perfectly setup and ready to go no fret buzz or anything this is my first multi scale bass and it wasn't hard to get used to once in awhile I'll mess up but I've gotten used to this bass now and it's easy. The sound. While as the pickups are very dark the pre amp cleans it up nicely I choose not to use it tho because I'm more of a passive player it's nice to add for a boost in a song tho so it's cool to have. With a lot of eq and the right cab this comes together really nice I would recommend using stainless steel strings to help give more brightness to this. The body is really nice I can play for hours standing up without problems in the shoulders. I recently bought a new fender p bass for a lot more than this bass and from putting them off together I would say this bass is different and has more benefits than a classic p bass you get a lot more sounds stainless steel frets and the roasted maple neck which I wish was a thing years ago. Which bass would I prefer we'll it be the Ibanez at this point because of all the great features it's priced well plays and sounds great for the money my number one thing about any music I've done for the last twenty years is something that cuts through the mix easily the p bass has always been my go to it's easy and you get to work right away this bass is on that level just add more mids and high end and your set I've been recording music for clients with this bass for about a month now and they are very happy with there recordings I will continue to use this bass for now on no more tuning to e eb d c since I got this I've relearn to play everything in one tuning and it's awesome it saves so much time I couldn't be happier with this bass and would recommend it to anyone out there.Anthony

I had been looking at the EHBs for some time now and finally pulled the trigger. Needless to say, I have not been disappointed. Having severely injured my left shoulder in highschool, the weight of basses caused problems over the years and was only getting worse as time went on; especially 5 and 6-string basses. Problem solved. The weight of the EHB is perfect and I no longer suffer those issues. It's ergonomic design is supremely comfortable both standing and sitting. The variety of tones from the electronics is superb. The instrument arrived in a timely fashion and the setup was spot on. The only "issue" is a slightly cosmetic one involving the top layer of the body not being perfectly aligned with the controls (less than a centimeter gap). It doesn't affect the sound nor playability so it wasn't worth a change in the rating.G. Brown

I use a strobe tuner and on occasion I might have to turn these monster tuners maybe 1/20th of a turn. The intonation was perfect right out of the box. The bridge is so beefy. I think this is Ibanez's best bridge they have ever made. The strap locks are sturdy and beautiful as all of the hardware is. This neck is awesome and beautiful craftsmanship. The wood used for the body is gorgeous and the dragon's eye finish is spectacular. My wife is very jealous of this instrument or should I say work of art. BUY IT!! You will not regret it.Robert

…meine Erwartungshaltung bezüglich der Fertigungsqualität in Relation auf den Verkaufspreis wurde leider ein wenig enttäuscht. Ich besitze noch einen viel älteren SR aus japanischer Fertigung, der für seinen damals deutlich niedrigeren (DM)-Preis mit deutlich mehr Sorgfalt gebaut wurde. Meine jüngste Errungenschaft hat sich den Punktabzug mit einem Sattel der 3mm kürzer als der Hals an der Kopfplatte breit ist, und mehreren Schlampigkeiten beim Finish sowie der nicht gebrochenen Holzkante des sehr trockenen Griffbrettholzes zum Neck-PU verdient. Aber nein früher war nicht ALLES besser😉 Die Bespielbarkeit ist nämlich einfach toll, denn das flache aber trotzdem nicht zu dünne Halsprofil ist wie für mich gemacht. Die aufgezogenen Saiten passen sehr gut zum Instrument und die Soundmöglichkeiten der verbauten Pickup-Preampkombination sind zwar nicht unendlich, aber durchaus angemessen für ein derartiges Instrument. Lediglich den Höhenboost würde ich mir etwas weniger harsch wünschen. Die Piezos in der Brücke entfalten ihr Potential als Uprightsimulation nach meinem Geschmack erst so richtig wenn man die im Auslieferungszustand eher niedrige Saitenlage ein wenig erhöht, so dass man mit den Saiten schön auf dem Griffbrett klappern kann…. Das mit der durchgehenden Halskonstruktion erreichbare Sustain gefällt mir sehr gut und ist in meiner Situation (Pop bis Rock) sehr gut dazu geeignet den einen oder anderen Kompressoreinsatz überflüssig zu machen. Kurz gesagt: Ich würde ihn trotz meines anfänglichen Gemeckers nicht mehr hergeben….🤓Ortwin

I'm a 15 year guitar player and bought this as my first bass guitar, so I have an OK idea of what a bass should play like. The bass had a slight neck bow and some buzz on the lower frets but adjusting the truss rod took care of that. I reset the action to factory and now it plays great! I play metal so this bass is able to get me the sounds I need. I really like the feel of the neck for someone with small hands. The action can be set pretty low but youll run into some buzz if you go too low. I'm happy with the purchase. It does not come with a case so that needs to be purchased seperately.MICHEAL

I've been playing since early 80's and have owned many basses. While not the best, it is right there at the top. The hardware is solid. I've not had issues with anything. The sounds is quite versatile. With the active eq., you can make it sound thick, like a Warwick, or ring like P-bass. The feel is very lite, but also solid…from good quality. Everything about it is tight and solid. The sustain is surprisingly good despite the lite weight. Playing this bass is possibly the best I've played. It is easy and smooth. The satin finished neck is fast and comfortable. The controls are smooth and easy to reach. The 3 tone controls each provide good range. Overall this is a very good bass that does about everything very well. It is much better that P/J basses I've had…not as good as my P.K. Factor.Zrider

First time buying a guitar (blind) online but it proved to be a success. Free delivery and it arrived well packaged and undamaged within 2 working days. The bass was set up and even almost in tune! The bass itself came with XL strings (nice) and has low action so is very easy to play. Lovely body finish too. The string spacing is very suitable for a first-time 5 string. I appreciate the opportunity to rate this product and express my feelings specific to this bass guitar. I've owned this Ibanez SR370E Aged Whiskey Burst for a short while now and in exploring its capabilities, I am still discovering all the tonal possibilities. Being a guitar tech, I couldn't resist improving the playability of this out-of-the-box beauty. Two one quarter turns to tighten the truss rod made the neck super straight as I like it. This did not result in any fret buzz on any string up and down the fretboard. Now I lowered the saddles to improve the action (Still no buzz.) My bass was built with an upgraded Accu-cast B300 bridge (I don't know why). The saddle adjustment is done quickly with just one screw (cool feature!). I fussed with the intonation to get the tuning right on. (Note: The saddles sit so tightly into the bridge in order to transfer maximum string vibration that you need to push on the saddles a bit to ensure proper intonation) I checked under the hood and found the electronics to be neat and tidy but complicated. I have no desire to modify the existing excellent tone controls. I tightened all the screws shined this baby up and now I have a bass guitar that plays like a dream. I'm holding with putting on stainless steel strings, the set of D'Addario's that came with the bass are still new and bright. Musician's Friend is my go to dealer for new gear.
