High E Guitar String For Sale (2024 Update)

I am a drummer. My son needed strings. He took a few lessons years ago, and recently decided to try again. Guitar needed strings. I put on a full set and tuned it up. Seem to be functional. Fairly flexible. I didn't want really heavy strings. I know they would wreak havoc on un-callused fingertips!Scott W.

First time using these. I really like them. I immediately noticed how much smoother they feel compared to the previous brand I started out using. They feel so much better on your fingers and they dont feel ridged on the thicker strings. String bends are much better. I think I am going to switch to Ernie Ball from here on out. I so badly wanted to like these strings, but they just are too brittle. I've lost 3 or 4 sets just trying to string my guitars normally – tighten the string and "pop" goes the weasel, on the nut or bridge, or this most recent time, at the tuning peg. They do look cool, but the only guitar I've gotten them to stay on, I'm now afraid to play it because I know the strings will break the first time I try to bend a note. I hang that guitar on the wall, and people think the strings look cool. I just wish I could play it too. I'm writing this 5 minutes after snapping a neon blue string, but I've also had back luck with the pink and the green strings – I assume they are all made the same way.CoolDogWalter

Since I started purchasing these strings, I have not been disappointed. They sound good and have a long wear life and keep their tone nicely. I like them because the neon effect coating adds a little more beauty to the custom guitars I build and restore.David

Picked up these DR neon Red strings for my Epiphone Les Paul SpII LE. Looks killer on a black guitar. I replaced the stock D'Addario strings with these. Nothing wrong with the D'Addario's, just wanted some contrast. They look great and play well. I've heard that these strings wear fast and the color fades quickly. Too soon to yet to tell.Buck

If you have an electric guitar or a 12 string acoustic, you will want to have a package of .009 extra light loose strings in your drawer. The can break occasionally and with some loose strings available, you can replace the broken .009's with a spare. These are good quality. Don't get caught without spares!gnm109

Try them, they're great. Feel nice, sound wonderful, last a long time. I've been through so many brands and so many different types of string, and these are the absolute best (for me). Even better than the expensive Austrian and German brands. I play many acoustic gigs, most are three sets a night. Some mainstream brands don't even last for one gig, going dead too soon. And if you try to squeeze a second gig out of them, it's normally the wound third string that disintegrates, regardless of manufacturer or price. But these White Bronze strings hold up well. My acoustic guitar is also stiff to play (yes, I should get an easier-playing guitar), but these feel perfect and my fingers aren't beat up by the end of the night. The singer-songwriter I often work with heard these strings on my guitar and immediately noticed the difference, and then wanted a set on her guitar.Colin

I have my favorite strings for acoustics, electrics, and classical guitars. But I needed something that would work well with the pick ups on my new Ibanez arch top Expressionist. I've tried several. These are a great option. I like the wound 3rd string. There's a set of D'Addario with a wound 3rd string I also want to try. The D'Adarrios have a slightly smaller gauge 3rd and 6th string, but these ghs white bronze will definitely be on my favorites list.Coca-Cola Cowboy

These strings are great for archtop guitars that carry a magnetic pickup. I play my Gretsch archtop unplugged every now and then and the flat wound jazz strings just don't have much acoustic presence. I tried the DR Zebras and they are pretty weak when plugged in. Been playing guitar since 2004, and started playing more metal/hard rock stuff shortly after. I used to always use my father's d'addario's as a kid, but bought these because of the dimebag logo when in 2007, and they did not disappoint. The feel, the tone, the longevity of the tunings are all exquisite. Have turned several friends onto these strings over the years. Excellent for my usage, metal and rock work in standard, Drop D, and Drop C. Will buy these strings as long as they are manufactured, specifically the 10-46 set.Scotty

These strings feel great on your hands and last a very long time. After the initial stretch they stay in tune very well and sound great. I see why Dimebag used them. I installed these on all 12 of my guitars and I buy them by the case from AMS. I have tried every string out there and these are by far my absolute favorite. These strings are absolutely fantastic for a FULL humbucker guitar (Les Paul or SG). Would not put them on single coil guitars though (Stratocaster or Telecaster). They are a lot brighter and tinnier than Pure Nickel. From this point on, these are all I'll use on my Epiphone SG….sound great and last a long time without losing their sound.White Dog

My Mitchell MS450 (single cutaway LP style guitar) came with D'Add's, which sounded decent. When I switched them out, I went with the GHS 10's on a hunch based on things I've heard. Great move! Nice, brilliant tone, rings out for eternity if you let them! I have heard that the GHS 9's are really good on Strat style guitars, so GHS might be my go to on my Squier Strat Classic Vibe next string change.Joe

I used 11's from D'Addario for years and I would break a string consistently for every show that I played. I do not know why I kept with D'Addario for so long. I figured I needed to have a heavier string gauge for durability and better tone. Searched around and came across these strings in the heavy gauge, and I could not be happier with them. These strings have great sustain, are durable, do not corrode as quickly as other brands I have used in my professional career playing music, and, despite their heaviness, are easy to play in standard tuning. Along with playing well with a pick and fingers, these strings also sound terrific when playing slide. You can get the same great tones out of these strings that Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have with their lighter gauges, as well as channeling the fat tones that you hear from Duane Allman from the Fillmore East show. Great Garcia tones can come from these strings as well. Basically what I am saying is that you can still get those classic guitar sounds on these heavy strings without feeling like your losing tone or playing opportunities utilized by the players that inspire you who may use lighter string gauges. These strings also (as far as I know) have a round core instead of a hex core. I think that might be a reason why these strings have so much sustain, especially when you have some distortion or overdrive keeping them warm while playing lead. If you are on the fence about getting these, I recommend you give them a try just see how they work for you. They are no that expensive and its worth it to figure out what works for you as a player. Feeling confidence in the gear you use is so essential to being comfortable on stage. Buy a pack and see what happens. You might find yourself just what you've been looking for.JFromJUNCO

I used to use Boomers for about 10 years, on all my electrics (9s). Until arthritis started creeping in. Switched to EB slinky 8s, and playing became much easier. Everything still had a huge sound, but previous order added a test set of the Boomer 8.5s for my Gibson Les Paul goldtop with P90s. Took a while to get used to the rougher feel compared with the EB 8s. But will probably order another set for the goldtop, and a set for my ES295.Joe S.

After buying these strings and slapping them on my Ibanez Artcore semi-hollow, I can honestly say that the best thing I have ever did to improve my guitar's tone was put higher gauge strings on it. Maybe semi-hollows just resonate better with them, not sure. The round 3rd string is pretty clutch – the strings I used to put on would have a very noisy, tinny-sounding 3rd string and having a wound one like this has completely solved that issue. My Artcore would just sound too twangy in general with lighter strings on it, too – and having heavier gauge strings improved that issue by leaps and bounds. I'm not exactly an expert in tone so I can't argue about the finer points of the sound these strings make – but my bottom line is, they help me to better access the range of sounds that I want from my instrument, and that's what matters. Definitely 5 stars for tone. I have one complaint though: I am an abusive bender, as it were. When I bend the strings, I push their limits pretty friggin hard, and these particular strings will only take so much. Had a string break on me yesterday while I was bending really hard but I had another set hanging around so it was all good. My lighter gauge strings from before would withstand this abuse beautifully – but just keep in mind that when you move up to thicker strings, you're making a trade-off: the thicker strings will wear out and break more quickly if you push them too hard and bend them abusively like I do. On the subject of bending, also: with the wound 3rd string, if you want to bend it, you need to bend it a lot further to get the interval that you want, so just be prepared for that. All in all however, I am VERY happy with these strings. I'll have to take it easy on the bending a little bit, but for me that's more than a worthy trade-off for strings that really make my baby sing like she should. I can't necessarily speak for how these would sound on other guitars because I've never heard what they sound like on others, but I would MOST DEFINITELY recommend them for anyone playing a hollow or semi-hollow guitar. These strings helped with tuning stability issues I was having with an (Indonesian, fat neck) Epiphone 335 Dot, which I love but the unwound G string was going out of tune. Swapped out the bridge (Guitar Fetish–nice choice and half the price of TonePro) and the nut (Graph Tech), which also helped. I retained the lower three strings from the 'Heavy Bottom" set I had on it already. The top 3 strings sound great, but I've only had 'em on for a few days. I also put these on another 335-style guitar, but the bottom 3 strings felt just a bit flimsy switching back and forth with the Epi, not surprisingly. They sound good, nice and acoustically rich.Doc

Bought these on a recommendation from a guy on YouTube and have not had any issues at all. I used Dean Markley Blue Steels for nearly 20 years, but due to lack of availability, was looking for an alternative. The individual who recommended them is a touring professional guitarist. I was surprised to fine this heavy of a guage of strings. I didn't know they existed. The thing about heavy strings is that you have much more ability to play with dynamic resonance – something you can't really get with light guage strings. With these strings, you can play as softly as you wish but when you really want it to "come out" they don't disappoint. I also only play with the fleshy tip of my fingers which melds into the subtle nuances of chord and solo performance.garycgrieve

The package is for C standard, not Drop C as some people mistakenly think…well, I guess you could use them for Drop C if you like veeeery stiff strings. If you want strings for Drop C, I'd suggest a skinny top/heavy bottom set of strings with an 11 up top and a 54 or so on the bottom so the bottom E tuned to C doesn't get floppy and knocked out of tune easily. Anyway, I've been using these for a long time on my USA core line PRS Custom 24 in C standard. They seem fine for going down a half step to B standard and feel fine even up half a step to C# standard. That's as high as I'd tune these strings up, though. I couldn't recommend these strings more!Josh

I have these strings on my schecter c-1 SLS blackjack tuned all the way down to drop A#, and let me tell you, despite being labeled as optimized for drop C, I don't recommend them for that tuning. 11-52s, 12-54s and 11-56s are better for Drop C, but for Drop B and Drop A#, you will not find a better gauge than these on a 25.5 scale length guitar or a 26.5 baritone. The tension is absolutely perfect! It feels like a 10-52 set in E standard with the E string tuned to D! Like with all D'addarios, they are bright, long lasting, they feel smooth and they absolutely love locking tremolos. I can yank my floyd rose all I want and it still will not go out of tune. Since D'addarios are bright as I stated before, they also remain clear under high gain, which I use my marshall JVM on the red channel with a maxon OD as a boost and a peavey 5150. Between the tuning stability, the tension, the reliability, the playability and the string life, you cannot go wrong with these for baritone tunings!Daniel

These strings are the bees knees! They are very comfortable to play on your guitar and they don't 'squeak' with hand movement on the fretboard. Also they really are luminous under a UV light. If you want your guitar to look a little bit different from the rest; then these Dr Neons are the ones to get. They sound good too and they last as well. I really like this and they look really cool against my maple strat or my ebony neck strat. Sound is great and unlike a lot of others I have played on my first set perhaps a half dozen times and I am not seeing the coating wear off as some state. There are perhaps a couple small spots where the coating is missing but hardly noticable. Smoother to the touch, less fret wear and using a high end board and half stack my tones are as good or better than they have ever been. I dig these and plan to make them my std on acooustic as well. Getting rid of that squeek on acoustic (even using finger ease) might make me play it a little more. The same size acoustic strings are a lot cheaper, they always raise the price when things get popular. DR I think makes the best strings going, handmade and the coating is done before wrap.stratosaurus

I play in D standard, and have been at it for 23 years. I've tried all brands and gauges, but these stick out as one of my top five favorites, and I came across them by accident. I wanted to buy a set of 11-50 DR TiteFits and accidentally bought these. When i got home I looked at the pack, realized I got the wrong pack and thought, "Black coated strings?! What a gimmick." Still I figured, why not try them out. Was I glad I did. Heavy and thick for melodic riffs and chords. Brights are crisp and clear. Smooth on the fingers and fretboard. I have a black guitar so they look fantastic as well. One thing, the part of the string that is picked fades after awhile, but it is no different than what happens to nickel plated strings. I waited months to write this review as part of the selling point is extra life-durability, and they deilver. They've lasted longer than any string I've had and have never broke one. Don't be scared away by the coating,colour or cost. I used to be one of those guys that said he'd never play on coated strings, but that was before I tried them. Normally I play D'addario 10's but I decided to give these strings a try during my most recent guitar set up at Sam Ash. These give the perfect amount of slack on the higher strings allowing for a bright, punchy tone and huge bends. This is balanced out by the heavier bottom 3 strings which add the extra tension making them great for drop D or other alternate tunings and an excellent twang for finger or hybrid picking.Ezra

Been using Ernie Ball 8-38's, 9-42's, 10-46's for a very long time and I have found that each has their strengths. [10-46} : 46-36-26 strings are great for driving thick rhythm. {9-42} : 11-16 strings are great for solid melody and rhythm. {8-38 : 8-11 strings are great for bending pedal steel licks to radical blues-rock bends. The best the three worlds = 8-11-16-26-36-46. From an economical stand point, the Hybrid Slinky with an .008 is a pretty affordable and fun experience. I've spent a lot of money on strings over the years and during my developmental and experimental phases I've come to enjoy this combination. The 10-46 forced me to be a better rhythm player with blue-jazz origins. The 9-42 turned me on to rock. The 8-38 taught me to create wicked country bends with speed. I feel now after 30 yrs or so of playing I've decided to take what I like from each set and make it my own. I'll call it, "Three Of A Kind"Drug Store Cowboy

BB King famously convinced Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top to switch to lighter strings and Billy never looked back. Tone can be shaped so much by the amp so the primary function of strings is feel and playability. Lighter strings like these mean you can play harder for longer. I also find I'm playing more accurately because my movements needs to be more delicate.Jack C.

You have to try these strings for yourself. No matter what anyone reviews or says, this is a matter of preference. So I say spend the money and try them. I will relate my personal review now. First off Ernie Ball strings are very good strings. I would say that about Curt Magnum, DR, GHS pure Nickels and Fender pure Nickels also. I play pure Nickel strings which are mellow strings btw. I normally use .10s and .11s. This was an experiment for me because I went down a rathole one night on the internet reading about what strings "the stars" use. I read what people said and honestly it is entertainment in itself!!! If you use 10s or heavier, you will have to adjust your neck, action and intonation. These no getting around that. The tension is very different. If you re-adjust your tone settings on your pedals and amplifiers, you'll get a usable tone with these strings. You'll have to play with your pickups also since they respond differently. Don't use these strings if you have a heavy picking hand like SRV. If you have a light hand or can switch it up and play softly, try them. DON'T go out and play a gig if you haven't spent some time with them, especially if you are dropping down from 10s or 11s. If you use 9s, you'll probably be ok. I am all for playing without tiring and playing without hurting my tendons. Maybe I will stick with these OR NOT. I have them on a PRS Custom 22 SE. I use 2mm V-picks. You had better use light picks with these strings. I switched to a Fender medium. So I use 11s when tuned down a half step. 10s up to pitch. If you have tendonitis from playing guitar 3 or 4 hours a day for 50 something years, these will be a refreshing change and you may not have any pain whatsoever. These are certainly the strings to use on a guitar that has a neck issue where the truss rod won't handle 11s or 10s. Nowadays, necks don't seem to be made to handle the medium or heavy gauge strings that I grew up with. Whatever I say doesn't matter. When it comes to strings, you will have to try them yourself and decide if they work for you or not. I purchased four sets to try on numerous guitars. I may get up enough nerve to use them at a gig. These may be strings to put on student guitars so they don't get discouraged.Rick

Ernie Ball has always been a high quality guitar string. Used by beginners, every day pickers, and professional musicians. They provide great sound and a great feel when played on a cheap guitar, or high dollar instrument. Im no professional guitarist , but I do know The Ernie Ball Slinky series string should be your number one choice when looking for a great all around string. There on all my guitars. Im experienced but im a dabbler on guitar, I also play bass and drums. got a smokin deal on a Strat, wanted lighter strings. I was always a fan of SS strings since Kamen introduced them in the 80s. good for harmonic tricks very hot. My musical tastes have mellowed with my age and I think the cobalts may suit my tastes better tone wise while still having the conductivity. Pure and even tone from string to string. Edgy. Tight lows and sparkling highs. Bright, clean, clear. But not shrill. Just a bright, clean tone. Chords ring with authority. Leads drill holes into your brain. String noise is a minimum but yet the string amazingly retains special harmonic quality. These strings seem to be high quality and well-made. They help me make music. Would not hesitate to purchase them again.zippidydoo

First off they look different shades of pink and orange under regular light. Also under black light they dont look red, they just look like different shades of orange. The main issue is the 1st string (High E) doesnt glow AT ALL. Like literally at all. They completely skipped the neon part on that one. Very disappointed.trev._45

I love DR string, and I have them on a few of my guitars and basses. However these "Red" ones are Sooooo PINK. Way too pink! I have to wear a red shirt when playing it's that bad. Love the strings, hate this color…waykewlstuff

I love these strings! Handmade in the USA. They play great, they sound amazing, they've lasted and have held up to alot of heavy playing with no issues. Having played them 2-3 weeks every day at least twice A-day they've held up and work great. Only drawback is that the coating started to come off which really isn't a drawback to be honest as it hasn't effected the sound or tone. Recommended for sure!Elijah
