I get a variety of good, useable tones out of this one box. In fact, this has replaced the distortion patches I was using on my trusty DOD Bass 30 entirely. To say that I am happy with any stock stompbox is a big deal, because I have only a few left in my collection that I haven't modified the circuitry in to better suit me. This is one of the few originals, and that says volumes. I step on mine regularly, and haven't had any issues with it. I'm not a bass player, but I play one on my records. I've been playing lead guitar for 20 years, and I know good sounds. I say this to inform you that my credentials are in good order. You can get any sort of growl you want, thick or thin- and as much or little of the clean as you need to retain the punch at the same time. The only thing I would change is the color of the box… Since that has absolutely nothing to do with the sound it makes, I'm fine with it. Seriously, I was skeptical too when I saw the price. I got this a while back to add a some gain to play a bit of metal with a bit of overdrive on top as well as fattening the sound of the bass. Unfortunately this will never give you a "smooth" gain sound like having a guitar amp's gain around 2. Having gain down all the way shuts off all sound to the amp, and having it around 2/10 puts on a harsh brittle overdrive no matter the EQ. Sounds a little better with flatwound strings. This pedal goes all out or nothing. If a "Hysteria" sound is what you're going for, this will do it but not a true amp low/med-gain sound.Fear

I have a 60w Fender Deville amp. Lovely clean sounds straight from the amp but couldn't really use the overdrive channel without the volume getting to an inconsiderate level at home. This pedal has addressed that issue really well. This pedal now provides me really raunchy distortion while providing a greater control for volume. The pedal also provides a nice boost in changing between a clean channel directly from the amp and then through the pedal. Very pleased with this investment, particularly for the price. i wanted to compare this to my boss hm-2 pedal but i can't get to it at this time, so i'll have to do this by itself. this is a very nice distortion pedal. again the plastic casing is durable and inexpensive ,so you're getting a good pedal for the money.the level and distortion controls are sensitive- i consider a plus. i do wish there was more bass in the in the low frequency control. now you might be asking, "why don't i cut back on the high frequency control?". here's why : the high frequency control appears to be a combination high frequency/gain control! the more you turn it up, the more gain. combined with the sensitive dist/level controls this is a nice feature if you want that. i like it . i can always boost the bass on the amp/EQ/whatever. i like to use different dimensions of distortions and if you are like me ,i recommend this.thurstonnalley
I guess I'm more of a roady/studio guy than I am an artist, as I've always got more out of turning knobs then actually playing music lol. I bought this pedal for one reason and one sound only. The Swedish "chainsaw" guitar tone of the 90's that came out of Sunlight Studios that was popularized by bands like Entombed and Dismembered. I think it sounds incredibly good considering I bought it NEW for 25 bones plus shipping! The distortion is sometimes a bit over the top, but cleans up when you roll back the volume knobs on the guitar. I imagine you could really get some interesting tones going if you paired this pedal with a compressor and eq both before and after it in the signal chain (and with Behringer that's actually an affordable option), and of course, a tube amp, as most of the bands with that sound supposedly used Peavey 5150 tube heads. Very nasty distortion pedal, if you could travel back in time to the 90's you could probably sell this to a metal head for absolutely ridiculous amounts of money. If you are not buying this pedal for a certain "Swedish death metal" sound or just metal in general, I would not recommend this pedal, as there are probably much better pedals out there for what you need. Its made out of plastic which I personally don't mind, as I'm not a touring or gigging musician. If I stomped on it several times a night for half a year I dunno how that would work out. Not a big fan of the color, but then again, I didn't buy this pedal for aesthetic value. Overall: I have more overdrive pedals then I realistically need but my selection of distortion pedals has always been disappointing for my taste, just never the right tone regardless of the set up. I figured this pedal wasn’t too much and saw good reviews for the pedal historically. Yes there are differences from the originals to the model we have today but this distortion pedal is ridiculously versatile. The distortion pot is very broad and goes from a subtle O\D to a full faced fuzz and then when you sweep thru the filter, that’s where you see how versatile the Rat truly is. Is this a pedal geared towards the modern metal sound? Probably not. Is this pedal a good product for the price? Absolutely! The ease of use with the three control knobs just makes this pedal a great first buy or for those, like myself, who seemed to keep coming up short with distortion pedals, a truly simple and reliable tank of a stomp box. The Rat pedal is a classic and was my first pedal in 1986 when hi gain amps werent affordable to 15 year old kids. That pedal was mean ! It had the original lm308 chip and gave me the Kill Em All sound I craved. Fast forward to 2020 and the pedal has not changed much. Its mean and can give you fuzz to mean hi gain rhythm and violin line like sustain on leads. For $69.99 it is affordable and awesome. Cons : you cant power this pedal with a standard Boss power supply. Its either buy a Rat power supply/wall wart or run it on batteries. Also, the battery compartment is plastic and not as tank like as the rest of the pedal. The changing of chips does make the pedal lose some of its magic. The new chip is fine but I do miss the lm308 and maybe its hype Im falling for. It likely is. So what can you do ? I sent my pedal of to Utah to be rehoused. The pedal itself is hard to adhere to a pedalboard bc it is so heavy and awkward. So mine is being put in a more pedalboard friendly housing. Also, all the components like in and out jacks etc will be replaced/upgraded as well as some cheap components inside the pedal. You also get the lm308 chip. Hell yeah ! For $150 you get a massively improved pedal. Do you need to do this ? No of course not. But if you want the best Rat pedal youcan get ( which in the new housing also allows being powered by a Boss style power supply via wall wart or pedalboard) then the mod will be a fun way to modify an already smoking pedal.swampdonkey90
This is a great pedal and is very versatile. It can go from an overdriven tube amp tone at low gain settings to very thick heavy distortion/fuzz tone. I like to set the gain low to a nice overdriven tube amp tone and then have my boss SD-1 in front of it pushing the pedal harder. It gives it a nice 80s hair metal, Marshall JCM800 type tone. The tone of the pedal is great and it is very versatile and a good deal. It will stay on my pedal board. The other nice thing is is it's extremely easy to use with just 3 knobs and very easy to find a great tone. When I first got this pedal I didn't like how bright it was but that where the filter knob comes into play and you can roll off the brightness to match the guitar and amp you have and get a great tone. This allows you to play it on bright and dark amps a like. I use it with a Gibson Les Paul standard with burst bucket pro pickups into my 65 reissue fender Princeton reverb and I will also run it into my Boss katana MKii 50 watt. Run on the clean channel through the effects loop, it sounds amazing. You can achieve practically any quality Metal Tone you desire. It's adds another dimension / channel if you will, to my amp. Its the original high gain amp in a box. If you cant get a good sound from it- then you havent spent enough time tweaking the EQ. And also useful as a boost in front of your amp distortion channel if you turn the pedal distortion all the way down and level up. Again- spend time tweaking those EQ knobs, theres a few sweet spots in there. Of course nothing sounds better than amp distortion, but when you need a portable amp in a box, this is the original. There is a difference in types of distortion. There is Crunch Rock, there is Tube Distortion, there is Overdrive, there is Screamer style, there is Fuzz, there is Grunge, there is Classic Rock which is Plexi Rectified, there is Hi Gain Modern, there is Drop D style, each having a feel to the style you seek. This pedal can do a bit of most all of them, This is the versatility of this pedal. It has the flexibility to go almost completely clean to roaring metal. The parametric tone control knobs are more flexible than most any other pedals I have seen. I have done a lot of studio work and no studio is without this pedal. It is designed to be versatile but it's main use is of course, metal Marshall 4×12 speaker stack arena rock. It needs to be used thru an amp or multifx that has cab simulation. It has the habit of sounding great thru just about any amp. Some pedals that sound great in some amps do not cut it in other amps. This one usually works in most. Even amps like Mesa and Marshall this pedal gain goes down to just a tad of distortion that warms up your amp distortion. One of the very few pedals that blends with most other distortions. The most fabulous thing about this pedal is the parametric equalizer knobs that can fine tune to just about any tone you want. With most other pedals you are locked into their preset eq frequencies with no control over the eq frequencies. This is a great feature. I have other great distortions but none have the flexibility of tone that this one has for metal crunch. For all out heavy metal it cuts through the mix, no mudiness. At 9 o'clock gain it has great plexi tone. At center gain it has full Marshall Stack gain. For 80s metal this is no doubt my favorite pedal.

Overall: Over the years I have owned at least a dozen bass overdrive and distortion pedals and this one is the best hands down. It sounds like an Ampeg SVT cranked with lots of warm rich tube saturation without sounding muddy or losing your low end. I was surprised at how well this pedal emulates a high gain tube amp. just like with the real deal if you dial back the volume on your bass and the amount of overdrive dials back with it. The controls are simple and easy to use and give tons of control of your sound. The volume control works to boost or cut your volume without effecting the effect leval. The blend control let's you dial in some of your clean tone to help keep your low end full. I leave the gain cranked with just a little of my clean tone mixed in and it sounds amazing. As an added plus this pedal is dead silent even when switched on. In the past I always needed to use a noise gate for my distortion pedals but this pedal is so quiet I don't need one, which helps free up space on my pedal board.Timothy

I am into classic rock, pop rock and blues, however, in my youth I was totally into Metal (i.e. Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Scorpions, Iron Maiden) lately I've been having the urge to play some heavy metal tunes I played when I was young, so I decided to purchase a metal distortion pedal for my smaller rigs around the house, I have many overdrives and distortion pedals but other than some of my amps at high volumes I had nothing good for heavy metal at acceptable volume levels. I came across this little Rage, I was not familiar with Mooer, and thought I will give one a try..in the 12 O'clock or greater setting the Rage has outclassed them in the tone department, there is not nasally/tin type noise which the others had, for the price of the Rage I was fully intending to return it thinking I would get the same results, the eq is very responsive and with the gain at noon or higher the pedal cleans up very well. Anyway, money well spent, I have been playing songs I haven't played in years due to not getting a acceptable tone at lower volumes. I was willing to pay much more money for what I was looking for, this little gem flipped the bill at a low cost.themanfromalabam
I have limited experience with compressors but I really like this pedal. I found my boss compressor pedal coloured the sound too much (too thin) and my JOYO dyna compressor far too subtle (and the attack knob seemed to be totally ineffectual). But the Mooer pedal is great – you can really hear the compression working, it is quite transparent as has been suggested in reviews and the tone knob gives a good range from bass to treble. It's small size makes it a bit difficult to affix to my pedal board – not much surface area to apply the Velcro to – but this is only a small niggle (it is a small pedal after all!). At the price I definitely recommend this pedal.Alan
This is my 1st Mooer – so I'm always a bit cautious when I'm laying bread down on a new manufacturer product – it was on Stupid Deal & I was in need of a heavier distortion as all in my arsenal (until this pedal) are "cleaner" types. A: I was surprised at the pedals range – it's more than metal B: Works great with a variety of guitars, both single coil & humbucker. This line of pedals is a great entry-level/affordable effects option if you want to experiment with new sounds, but it's equally good if you know what you want, and what you want is nothing fancy or bizarre sounding, just some perfectly "standard" effects. And this particular unit is one of the most handy and usable distortion units of the line IMHO. It provides a great range of distortion tones, and most of them perfectly usable/suitable for metal, hard rock, etc. I mean, it's not easy to find a bad setting in this pedal, one that generates a truly disgusting sound (unlike other units… like the ultra metal or the heavy metal… which require some precaution in their knob tweaking). The enclosure is plastic, and replacing the battery is a little bit tricky, but that's very easy to tolerate when you see the price tag. And, It just sounds good to me. I have no complain.

First, I have to admit, I'm a pedal junky. Not Sorry. I got this pedal on a whim to use up some backstage points. I planned to put it on a b board which is much smaller than my main board. This pedal takes up quite a bit of space due to its large footprint. If you are looking for a compact distortion pedal, you may want to keep looking. It's about the same size as some way huge pedals I have. I have one other TC box (HOF mini) and I think that is an awesome pedal. At first, I wasn't too stoked on the tone of this pedal. I eventually found some tones that I felt were usable. The thing that surprised me most was the mid scoop switch. I am not a "scoop the mids" metal guy, but to me, this pedal sounds best in the scooped or fat position. I thought I would like the raw position, but after the first day, I don't think I've used it in the raw setting. I think it works best in conjunction with a boost or overdrive pedal. If this is your first effect of this type, you may like it right off the bat, but if you are a little more experienced and really know how you want to shape your tone, you may find it a bit limited in its tone shaping abilities. All in all, for the price, it's a decent distortion. Always nice to have choices. Probably a good pick for those of us on a budget, or players just getting into using effects, but if you are a pro, really picky about your sound, or have a ton of cash, there are better boxes out there. Although I haven't played professionally for several years, I still know a good piece of equipment when I check it out. I think that one would be hard pressed to find a better sounding pedal in this price range and there's enough overdrive for pretty much anything. The real surprise is that it has the versatility to clean up very well allowing the tone of your guitar to shine through in a natural manner for blues/rock etc. where you'd just like a little clip going on. I haven't had this pedal long enough to attest to the reliability on down the road, but am very happy with it performance wise at this time.Technodog

How odd. This review was flagged for writing Big Mu** using the two F's 🙂 For the money, this is a really hard pedal to beat. It goes from mild and laid-back to wild and intense. The controls feel great…like as in excellent quality. This is a reissue of the original Big Mu** PI. I tried a Big Mu** PI with Wicker and forget about it. It hissed so loud in Wicker mode that I couldn't even here myself think and it got even worse with the tone switch off. And even in the so-called Big Mu** PI mode, it didn't sound anywhere near as good as this Rams Head does. And, the Rams Head is quiet compared to the BM PI with Wicker. One more thing, The BM PI with Wicker does not say anywhere on it nor in the included paperwork where it's made, whereas the RH BM PI clearly says New York City on the face of it…Vincent
The tone sweep is nice and there are some interesting spots because it is linear while kind of non-linear at 10 to noon and about 1-2 on tone control. I can't say why but usually I had purchased like more expensive versions of ehx pedals. That being said, I think people need to realize that these are quite accurate reissues and circuits, and just because it is an affordable pedal doesn't mean it isn't great.
Overall: Floats like a stone and stings like a nest of angry hornets! This box has the buzzsaw sound down pat. The fuzz is a thick, smooth, and consistent. I like this kind of fuzz in particular because it’s less fuzzy and little more distortion-like. The Tone knob has a really wide sweep from boomy bass to mid-range Hades. It has plenty of gain on tap and even sounds pretty good with the guitar’s volume rolled back a skosh.I’ve never used the original Green Russian Muff and have only heard them compared through videos online, so I can’t speak as to how they’re different/alike. I got it because I didn’t want to haul my vintage Black Russian Muff around from gig to gig anymore because it’s getting valuable and since it was a pretty jenky design to begin with, it’s liable to break with heavy use. That being said, the reissue Green Russian Muff has a different sound than an original V8 Black Russian Muff. It doesn’t sound as good to me, but it’s not so different that I wouldn’t use the Green Russian live in lieu of the Black Russian for the aforementioned reasons. One huge plus for the Green Russian is its pedalboard friendly size. The Black Russian is the size of an 80s metal lunchbox and took up an awkward sized chunk of the pedalboard. Now there’s more room for other unnecessary boxes (gulp)! One noteworthy ding for this pedal is how difficult it is to see the script on the top of the pedal. The words are printed right underneath the knobs, so if it’s kinda dark (which it usually is) and the lights are all in front of you (which they usually are) the words are impossible to see. Overall it’s a nice fuzz especially for the price. It’s noisy, but once the music gets rolling you won’t even notice it.Brad

This MXR covers all of the tones I need. I am playing a passive bass through a PA. I mainly need some boost and some color. This works great. I rarely use the distortion. The pedal really add to the bottom end. I reduces that hollow tone you can get playing live in an acoustical challenging room.
Whenever I turn on this pedal, distortion or not it sounds like someone just woke up a beehive, The actual clean sound is pretty good but when you really dig into the pups it starts to make that pop sound louder which is a big issue for me at least, (shouldn't be due to volume increase) when the distortion is on, there's even more buzz AND it's a very bad distortion. The distortion also doesn't have a wide range of sounds and is only really usable at minimum gain and the blend knob almost all the way back, just get an OD , and an EQ pedal, trust me.Undisclosed
I typically run a clean bass signal with no effects (except for a compressor pedal). I purchased this pedal because of the DI, Equalizer control, Distortion (as needed) and 9v operation. (1) The DI sounds pretty good and records clean. (2) The Equalizer control is a little too sensitive for my taste, but it does shape the sound as expected. I feel that a +/- 12db 4-band Equalizer would have been better with frequency bands of 80Hz, 360Hz, 800Hz and 5kHz. (3) The Distortion is pretty good and fits the bill when needed. Like most distortion pedals, it is slightly thin when "on". But this pedal can balance a clean (low) and distorted tone for a good balance. (4) The pedal operates on the same 9v supply/polarity that virtually all other pedals operate on (center negative). I find this convenient when operating all pedals on my Big Joe Lithium Power Supply. In summary I'm happy with my purchase and it resides in my set-up all of the time.SLoveland

While some claim this compressor is an optical compressor, that couldn't be further from the truth. This compressor is an OTA (operational transconductance amplifuer) design, much like a Ross or Dynacomp. That being said it is an improvement in that design. A big one. If you're into great tone does it really matter whether it is OTA, optical, flux capacitor, or glow plug? No. The bottom line is that this compressor is awesome! It can do the Ross/Dynacomp thing where it DOES squash and color your tone, or it can be as transparent as you want it to be. I have the Mini Ego on another pedalboard and I love the sustain knob on the big brother. The pedal has phenomenal versatility. The tone control is very interactive and when switching from single coil to humbucker pickups all is needed is a tone adjustment to dial things in. I found one cheap and used and bought it with no preconceived notions. This pedal chugs and grinds in its own unique way. Not like a Bogner Red, Wampler Triple Wreck, or HK Warp Drive (all great pedals). You can play dissonant chords and it will evenly drive each note (A Vox Satchurator does this too, but the Metal Core has INSANE amounts of usable bass). I play through two 4×12's with V30's and G12T100's and it THUMPS! Turn down the gain and it backs down and lightens up. Works great with delay/time based effects.DaveMan
You can get every pedal in the world and BOSS is just going to tear them up and be the ones you want to go back to. The BOSS ml-2 is simply that distortion pedal you are looking for to carry you over the top in sustaining notes feeling like you're playing on butter, yet ripping that growling crunching chug you want to push thru the mix. Try using it also with a overdrive pedal and turning the ml2 distortion level down to about 7.5. Then use the overdrive to kick it back in for your leads. Have still to explore all the tonal possibilities of this aptly-named dual distortion pedal but first impressions have been very positive. The unit is smaller and lighter than I expected but the two foot switches are well separated. With six controls for each channel plus shared 'hi' and 'lo' EQ there are plenty of tone-shaping options. The user manual helpfully suggests some settings to get you started. The internal noise gate has so far proved very effective left on the 'natural' setting. You can adjust the threshold to suit your guitar's output, but having used the pedal with guitars loaded with vintage, medium output and hot humbuckers, I've found no need to alter the default factory setting. If you're in the market for a versatile high-gain distortion pedal I would strongly recommend taking a look at this one.Christopher D.

Playing through a 60's fender super reverb, it is thin, sort of a DS-1 sound or texture. This would work best, I think, through a half-stack style setup, which are usually bottom heavy. Through a classic clean amp, this pedal simply does not have a bottom end. This thing needs more sweepable eq to sculpt a tone out of it.sensaschon

i bought this pedal used at the local samash store just to experiment with and i got to say i found it very usefull, if you play hard rock or metal this is a must have, sure there's more choices out there but in my opinion this pedal is pretty good., it doesn't suck up my tone in any way and its true what the other guy said, u can use it as a boost pedal too, i keep my on the crunchy side anyways i'm glad i bought this pedal. This is an amazing pedal, definately the best (for Bass) from Boss. It keeps the basically unaltered low-end while crunching the highs, Great for rock and metal. You can also just use it as a booster for a Bass solo. You can change the OD/distortion from a normal Bass with some grit on top all the way to a tuned down Bass-less guitar, and everywhere in between. Mine doesn't eat up batteries like the other person said. And the light tells you when the batteries are low by getting dimmer and dimmer.X-actly
