I really like that the author wrote in a lot of sort of home-remedies for guitars and amp repair. He gave examples of what works with what like Lemon oil, or chopsticks or baking soda… Sounds like a cookbook now that I think of it, but its a very useful book as it explains what other books don't. I own some and most of them had one method, which is their best method, but didn't include other methods leaving you inside a box. This guy also explains to you the majority of repairing guitars to get you started. The amp section is a little more brief, but he does remind you that it can be deadly working with amps so be careful. This is a great buy no matter what level you're in, whether you're just learning to play guitar or you're a seasoned luthier. Only complaint is the text is small. I think its 12 pt font, but its not double spaced so it looks tinier.edgartar

I got a used electric on Ebay that had horrible intonation. I dug out my old Homespun Tapes video on guitar maintenance & repair only to have the VCR eat the tape. The video was no longer published. I found another nice looking one by the Learn & Master folks–but too expensive. So….Back to Ebay. The seller "1dayx" had a copy of this & for about 1/3 the price of one of the DVD's, I got this book which comes with a video CD. Set up problems solved with a book AND video examples. Even more, this book is really comprehensive, covering both acoustic and electric guitars. With the video examples, I'm now able to do my own basic set up & maintenance. GREAT VALUE!studiohope
Our son got into guitars in a big way. So my wife enthusiastically purchased him a Fender Jazz Bass, a Gibson LP and a Taylor nylon acoustic, all second hand at a third of the cost of brand new, but all in mint condition. Knowing little about guitar maintenance / setup, my frugal wife discovered it would quickly add up taking all these second hand guitars into the "experts". Using Dan's book, we re-strung the Fender and adjusted, the Gibson was within specification and the "bird nest" at the Taylor's stock head was tidied up. We also have a Stratocaster copy (Cimar by Ibanez) that we purchased for $50 years ago. With Dan's book, we discovered virtually every conceivable guitar setting on this Strat copy was completely out! With a new set up strings, several hours' set up work, we got the Strat copy within acceptable specification and sounding quite good. Dan's book is an excellent reference for the DIY-er, along with anecdotal stories of various guitar artists whom he's dealt with over the years. Dan's book covers both acoustic and electric guitars. For those of you who like short reviews: Overall, I thought that this book was worth the cost. Here are some thoughts on specific sections I had as I read the book: This book was published over twenty-five years ago. I mention that only for those people who are concerned about such things. Designs for Tube-type Instrument Amps were more or less codified another twenty years before then, so it is pretty much a moot point for me. That said, there is a Chapter on Speakers that could be updated. While underlying concepts remain the same, today´s Speakers are made of new, improved materials. If you own a tube amp and know little or nothing about tube amps or amp electronics in general, then Chapters Fifteen and Sixteen, ´What NOT To Do´ and ´Technical Tips´ are probably worth the cost of the book right there. If your interest in this book is Amp Mods, be aware that the author is a Marshall kind of guy and although Basic Principles remain the same, modifications for other brands of amps are not described. There are also some Troubleshooting Flowcharts included. I have not had occasion to use them, but they look very well done. This book is not a collection of schematics and is not intended as that sort of reference work. Bearing that in mind, a few schematics or circuit sections could have been very helpful in illustrating the text. A sample schematic would be especially useful in the chapter on biasing. Final assessment: This is a good introduction to the topic of Tube Amps. Techs and other Advanced Readers might want to look elsewhere. This is Technical Material, so you can expect some Math, Science and Big Words, but there is nothing here beyond the High School level. Recommended for Beginners and Early Intermediate.michaelmx

This book is superb. It goes into great detail about how valve guitar pre-amp (and to a lesser extent amp) circuits work. It explains exactly how you can create distortion tones in all manner of ways from high gain valve circuits. It is quite detailed, and it would help if you understand the basics about voltage, current, capacitance etc.. Despite the deep explanations, there are plenty of example circuits. The maths is moderate (I would like to have seen more myself for even deeper understanding) but mathematical analysis is probably not going to tell you what sounds good; experimentation is best for that. In that regard the book gives you plenty of starting places, and explanations as to how different types of circuit induce distortion (clipping) in different ways. If you want to have a go at building valve guitar pre-amps, and have never done it before, you must buy this book. It will save you a lot of time. WARNING – valve circuits need lethally HIGH DC voltage. If you are going to try building your own circuits be very careful and follow proper safety precautions.paul45670

Normally I would have just thrown away a guitar that has been badly damaged as the ones shown in this book, but after seeing how these guitars can be restored, I now will repair them or have them repaired. I also particularly like the section on refinishing as any type of refinishing, partial or complete can be difficult especially if you are not skilled in that area. The book covers a lot of areas in different ways, which I like because it helps me absorb the information. I like reading about the evolution of different Amps and the practical side that a technician will appreciate. There are always intangibles when it comes to sound and I like the way the author gives a place to that dimension of interpreting values regarding the different aspects of the amps he is writing about. I am a harmonica player and was slightly disappointed that there is no mention of modifications that would specifically pertain to amps designed for that purpose. Other than that I love the detail and scope of the book and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in tube amps.sydrea48

I thought that the effects portion of the book might be a little more about certain types of caps and resistors and their effects on amps and electric guitars sound. i was a little disappointed in that that part of it content was minimal at best. I am interested in early Fender guitar instruments and amps especially the Esquire and amps that would have been used along side of them. The internal working parts of this type of equipment would be of high interest to me. I would rate this book as average.misterbanjo
