South bound strings – made in america, bound for glory! open g is a great setup for slide (fretless) playing, and the standard guitar tuning is great for a fretted instrument – you can play the "top" portion of most guitar chords with just a couple of fingers! much longer or shorter than that and the strings will either be too loose and sloppy, or so tight that they break before they reach the pitch. this string set is formulated based on our own experimentation and what has worked on our own guitars. if you want to hand-pick specific strings in specific sizes, this may not be the pack for you. but if you are not sure exactly what you need and want a set of inexpensive strings that should work just fine for your build, this is the ticket. please note that these strings are intended for either an acoustic cbg or one with a piezo pickup. also please note that the bronze would strings may be either 80/20 bronze or phosphor bronze. on the subject of tuning a cbg, having a digital chromatic tuner can be a big help to get in tune, compared to tuning by ear, pitch matching or using a microphone-based tuner.

The high G string just snapped. The D string was the only one to not have a problem. A personal choice, but I like D'addario strings in general and always them on my steel acoustic and electric guitars. Just acquired a Spanish classical guitar (new experience for me!) so I started experimenting with strings. After trying a few different brands and gauges of strings over a five year period I have finally found the perfect brand/set of strings for playing in C# and drop-B tunings. I started out playing Ernie Ball sets on a 25.5 scale guitar in standard tuning but when I began experimenting with down-tuning I found the EB sets to be lacking in tone and definition the lower I tuned my guitar not to mention constantly breaking my low E string. When I switched to playing a 24 3/4 scale guitar in C# and drop-B I had to start looking for a new set of strings because the EB "not even slinky" sets I had been using just were not cutting it. I tried Dean Markley Blue Steel .13's with a wound 3rd string and found the top strings to be cumbersome and the low .56 still not heavy enough for dropping the low E to B. I went to every single music shop in town looking for a light top/extremely heavy bottom set and I finally ran across the GHS .10 – .60 set on sale, two for the price of one. Perfect! These strings last forever. If you use some GHS Fast Fret on them they keep their tone better than any other brand of string I've tried and I have yet to break a string in the year or so I've been using the GHS .10-.60 sets. The tone is fantastic and they sound great on a mahogony/maple body guitar with EMG pickups. It does take some getting used to the difference in string gauge between the low and high strings but it didn't take me long to learn to adjust my pick attack for the lighter strings on the top end. If you know how to set up your guitar for heavy gauge strings get 'em and go to town! If not I would highly recommend you take your guitar to a guitar/music shop and have it set up by a pro. Oh, for you kids out there: these strings are NOT meant for standard tuning and they will not make you sound like Zakk Wylde but they might make you a better guitarist if used as intended. touring in the 80s I used GHS boomers GBCL, I stopped playing in the 90s and somehow ended up using EB hybrid slinkys. I found an old pack of boomers in a guitar case compartment i hadnt opened since 93. Somehow they were still fresh and strung up one of my guitars from the 80s. Wow, the wound strings EAD (or C# G# C# my tuning) are definitely Louder and breakthrough more than the wound EBs… (the plain steel sounded identical). There are soooooooo many fake garbage and laughable opinions on guitar products these days on the tube that I decided to do my own experiment to confirm what I was hearing. I proceeded to purchase 26 packs of these GHS boomers GBCL (which are the wound strings from a 10s set and the plain strings from a 9s set). Using 2 identical guitars (even color), Logic X via a PreSonus FireStudio input, dunlop red acrylic 1.5mm pick and as consistent as possible pick of each strings. The only difference was that each guitar had a new set of strings, one got GHS boomers GBCL and the other ErnieBall HyBrid Slinkys. I averaged the 12 picks of each string by merging the 12 waveforms into a single track for each guitar for each string, the wound strings of the GHS boomers were clearly louder, rang longer by at least 7.2, 5.9, 4.6 seconds respectively (tuned toC#, G#, C#). the Plain Steel string waveforms were virtually Identical between the sets though. If you arent sure what this tuning is, its simply DropD half a step down (aka dropC#). Plugged into a Dual Rectifier, Laney and a Vetta, on a high gain channel you get this Extra Gain that breaks through, so needless to say ill be back to using GHS boomers GBCLs on all my guitars!!!thundercab

Strings 1, 2, 3 sound just OK, and they produce slight rustling sound when my fingers move between the frets. They also make rustling sound when I pick them using my bare fingers (no nails). I have used others that I will not name, but this type of string (Savarez 520 R) fits very well with my playing style (Classical). They move and respond harmoniously together! Bright and clean! As described on the package, these are primarily jazz guitar strings. I play a Benedetto Manhattan Custom 7 that was originally strung with round-wound 12-72 strings. After going through a few sets, I was looking for a slightly lighter feel and mellower sound. The typical 7-string sets with unwound third strings and lowest strings in the 50s felt like rubber bands and did not produce the sound I wanted. D'Addario chrome flat wound strings have the sound I want while allowing a relatively low action without buzzing. The strings start out mellow and hold their tone throughout most of their life. They will eventually sound dull (not necessarily a bad thing – listen to Tal Farlow). When intonation begins to suffer, it's time to replace them. I do not recall breaking a string. The majority of my playing is finger-style in the George Van Eps tradition and these strings are great for that application as well as comping and single-string work. They sound great purely acoustically as well as amplified. If bending notes is a major feature of your style, you probably will not be happy with these strings. If you are fortunate enough to own a seven-string jazz guitar and want a classic jazz sound, these strings will suit your instrument and style of playing quite well. They are practically the only game in town unless you prefer piecing together sets from individual strings.Mike H
These strings have proven to be the best on the market. Flatwounds are the most under-rated string ever, and D'addario chromes are the best of the best. They are very warm, very mellow, so if you play extreme metal like I do, you will have to tweak your pre-eq tone a bit to get the same "bright" sound from roundwound strings, but this is easily achieved with a treble booster or a pre eq with some of the bass turned down a little and some mids and highs turnd up a little. Once you've done that, these strings are RAZOR SHARP and virtually all string chirp is eliminated. They're "tighter" feeling than rounds so they stay put when you're tremolo picking. If you want to do artificial harmonics, they work well on these strings, but you have to be precise. Also, pick slides work well, but they're a bit "softer" sounding than on rounds… The few adjustments you have to make in your tone to compensate is a very small price to pay for a string that lasts forever, cleans up your sound, and eliminates string chirp… I recommend these to every guitar player I know.Manos
I bought these seven strings for a six string guitar 'cause they were the only ones I could find flat wound and not for a bass. I was concerned that the tone would be flat too, but it's not they sound warm and mellow, perfect for jazz and classic rock and blues. I can finally make the slides in "Blackbird" sound right. I put them on my new semi-hollow body Hagstrom guitar that has this amazing fret board made out of a man made wood composite that is practically friction free. I mean, overall, you probably already know what strings you like and don't like if you play at all, but I will say that these strings initially do have a brighter tone than many others. The one knock I have on these is, if you are a chugger, the strings will almost definitely unwind from the base after a while. That said, they definitely hold a nice one until they break. I have yet to have one take on that muted or tinny tonality, so that is a good thing. Overall, these are pretty versatile, but the more aggressive you are as a guitarist on the strings, the more likely you are to have to replace these more frequently than some of the other brands out there.Peter
These strings are perfect, sound great on my guitar and make very little noise when sliding from fret to fret. They are also low wear and tear on the fingers and would be ideal strings for new players as they work up your finger calluses. Sustain seems fine and they are now my favorite strings for electric guitar (do they make a version for acoustics?) I like playing guitars, but my practice time is always cut short by pain in my fingers – when I first played flats on my bass, it transformed my practices – I can play for an hour plus without discomfort. These replaced the set of 10's that came on my 25.5 inch scale Hanson Firenze; Jazzmaster style offset with classic-wind Firebird-like blade pickups and a Bigsby. No setup changes were required when I dropped back to this lighter 9.5 set. I can't tell the difference in tone but my 64-year-old fingers aren't feeling nearly as much stress when I play. I liked the sound of the 10's compared to the 9's I was accustomed to but my fingers never quite adapted. These in-betweeners feel great and sound good too.Dave
I'm very surprised these strings aren't far more popular. I think it's because most guitarists don't think about in-between gauges. You get the easy playability of 9 gauge and the tuning stability of 10 gauge. They're not so stiff that ye lil finger tip gets all sore doing them bends and not so light that when ya get all into the groove and apply a tad too much pressure them notes start to sound a touch sharp. As for tone, these sound great! Not too bright. Not too dark. Just right. I play a lot in drop D using a Floyd and these are the perfect string. Not too stiff, not too light. Perfect for noodling around the fretboard. I mean, these are 5 bucks a set. Buy a set and check em' out. I'm sure as hell glad I did. As far as stuff getting on your hand as one reviewer stated, well uh, I think that's a dirty bridge and fretboard. Definitely not the strings. How would that even be possible??DanGoodShot
I am beyond gigging at 77 due to arthritis and Tennosynovitis, but these strings allow me to enjoy jams without sacrificing tone. Some necks also become "just right" when they are too limber for nines. If you're a "Tens" minimum guy, give them a try and give your fingers a break. Ernie Ball does it right !

I hate to give a bad review of Earthwood because I've played and loved the other Earthwood strings; however I tried these Rock & Blues strings on my Taylor as well as my Fender Sonoran and was not happy at all with the sound. For me I think it is the fact that the g-string is like an electric string and not wound like an acoustic string. Because of that, when I strum the whole acoustic sound is "off". Sure the string is easier to bend for lead, but to me it's not worth the trade off of having a bad sound when strumming.Strums the Word
If you have soft, weak hands, don't even bother unless you wanna toughen them up. If you want a warm tone, these strings give you the warmth that's expected from these gauges and the 80/20 is the difference. Perfect for that Country or Classic Rock sound. You definitely get the 'new string' sound starting off and the sound only gets better. They also stretch fine for open tunings such as open E which I love for slide playing, steel or glass. To my ears, bare-finger picking and medium gauge picks bring out the best in these strings.
I use to buy Martin Marquis strings but the price went up and I thought I would try these Ernie Ball strings. I put a set on my guitar yesterday evening and they sound good. I like buying the packs of strings instead of single packs. We will see if they have a long or short life. The sound is great.Hunter Dan

I’m actually really glad that I’ve been given the opportunity to write this review… I recently had my main Breedlove acoustic looked at by our local tech here in Gibsland Jon, I have been trying different string types for about two months and couldn’t quite get the sound I’ve been chasing. I don’t use the other bright brand that cost a bit because it sheds and I find other things I don’t like about the big E John told me you’ve gotta have a go at these mate… After considerable pressure I brought a set and I still can’t believe how great my guitar sounds every time I play which is every day. I waited a few weeks before submitting this review because I wanted to see if these strings lived up to the promises. I have to say I am not disappointed. They sounded great (as you would expect) when I first restrung my guitar. However here I am, several weeks later and there is no noticeable deterioration in the sound quality, whatsoever. For the past year or so I have been using Ernie Ball Earthwood Phosphor Bronze which are excellent but these are better. Seems to do the job as the colour of the cloth after you wipe it down suggests. Not a massive fan of the smell personally. Nice little tin to store it in and should last a long time. The cloth provided does fray and leave little bits on the strings every now and then. I expect the cloth won’t last as long as the main product. Not sure yet how much it lengthens the life of strings and whether it pays for itself through that (I expect not) but it’s nice to know that the strings are being maintained.Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.
I've been using fast Fret for as long as I can remember. A quick wipe after every gig and the strings soud better and last a lot longer. Before I started using it I would break a string maybe every gig (and always had to have a spare guitar ready) but once I started using Fast Fret I was getting more like 6 gigs out of a set of strings. So it pays for itself quite quickly, and lasts a very long time. It is worth noting though, that it is essentially just mineral oil and is not really magic formula. You can buy mineral oil cheaply on eBay (search for chopping board oil) and that's the same stuff. But what makes Fast Fret worth it is the applicator – it prevents you from putting too much on and having a load to wipe off again. It also helps look after your fretboard too, as most lemon oil fingerboard cleaners/conditioners are just made of mineral oil too – there are no lemons in lemon oil 🙂 Anyway, I would recommend it – buy with confidence! I have been using Fast-Fret for decades on ALL of my stringed instruments and it is the ONLY string treatment I will use. I have found that applying Fast-Fret after EVERY use of my guitars, banjos and mandolin can prolong string life for more than twelve months. As an experiment some years ago, I left a set of Fast-Fret maintained stings on one of my guitars to see how long they would remain in good playable condition, and they lasted for more than three years. I'm not saying strings should be kept on an instrument that long as the wire will become tired and lose brightness and tone over time, even when kept clean and corrosion free. But I regularly keep strings on instruments for up to 12 months because Fast-Fret can extend string life for a very long time… If applied thoroughly and religiously to your strings after using your instrument. Experience has taught us that Corrosion and dirt are the enemies of metal strings. This because, the oily salts & acid from contact with fingers and hands is the Number One cause of Premature String Death. Finally, I have to say I love the new design of Fast-Fret. It's new plastic end cap and metal can packaging significantly extends the life of the product.Groovintheblues
