Fender Super Champ X2 Hd 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head For Sale (2024 Update)

I had a difficult time deciding between the Super Champ X2 and the Laney Cub 12r. I previously had a Cub 10, so I knew with the Laney I'd be getting a great sounding amp. Thing is, I already have a Marshall DSL5, so I didn't need another British amp, I needed clean American sound. So I took a swing at the X2 and couldn't be happier. I was expecting a good, balanced sound based on enthusiastic reviews, but honestly didn't think it would be THIS good. The upside… Light weight, front mounted knobs, amp modeling (great modeling through the first 8 or 9, the high gain, not so much), great built in digital effects that are actually usable. The tone and feel of the tubes (valves) is fantastic. There's plenty of headroom and squish. I honestly love this thing and have no regrets on this purchase. Period. Somehow even the rather cheap and flimsy stock speaker sounds good with decent bass. My only quibble is it's inability to pull off high gain. It's really not this amps forte, but can be easily be remedied with a speaker swap, without losing the clean chimey-ness. If you don't get one immediately, plan on a future purchase of an Eminence Ragin Cajun 10" to bring this amp from merely mortal to god-like status. It now sits square in the realm of my Marshall DSL/Celestion Gold G10 when it comes to being a killer tone machine. I believe the X2 is gig worthy with the speaker upgrade within the context of the right music genre. Usefull for Blues, Modern Jazz, Classic Rock and maybe country in a intimate setting or small club where the quality of the music is more important than trying to blow out the audiences eardrums. It can get plenty loud and sound good doing it. I've played around with the Fuze software and if your a knob tweaker and enjoy experimentation, this will be up your alley. Contrary to other review I've seen, you CAN save the adjustments made in Fuze permanently to the amp, so you don't need to remain plugged in to the software at all times. WTG Fender!Deemic

I bought this after a lot of comparisons among similarly-priced tube amps. I was only looking for a tube amp for recording after having used solid-state amps and emulators for that purpose for years. After playing it for a while, I love the responsiveness of the tubes and being able to dial in just the right amount of dirt just from the guitar's volume pot. I like the "Voice" selection for different amp modelings of Fender amps (so, yeah there's still some non-analog stuff going on here). And, after mic-ing it for a recording which came out great, I am next going to experiment with the USB-out method of recording. I think the trick there will be the length of the supplied USB cable. I haven't investigated the Fender FUSE software yet, so can't speak to that.CRAIG

Professional musician of over 50 years with very good memory and experiences with early-mid 1960's Fender tube amps as a reference. While I always enjoyed the power and "bark" of the larger 4X10 combo's like the Super Reverb, or the massive bottom "thump" from the Twin Reverb's 15" JBL driver with aluminum dust cap, my standard of reference then, as it is now, for a clean machine and signature Fender sound remains the Deluxe Reverb. Today, other than a straight combo reissue, there are two amps in the current line which more than come close: The Super Sonic 22, and this Super Champ XD. Both achieve their signature sound via a pair of 6V6's, with the Super Champ being cathode biased and using a solid state rectifier in place of the traditional GZ34 tube. With a good matched "hard" set of Tung Sol 6V6's, and a selected and balanced 12AX7, the Super Champ will provide that signature clean sound of the greatest 60's amps, and also provide some extremely useful and quality effects patches and combinations. My first concern was the 15W nominal rating, which with my set up actually is running at 11W a side, so it is right down the rating line of the original Deluxe Reverb. This "little monster" pushes these fabulous tones through a custom 2X12 Deville cabinet loaded with a pair of Celestion Vintage 30's, which I purchased long before they transfered production out of England. Sound pressure levels are more than gig worthy in the average club or bar, or small theatre style venue. While the spring reverb patch is excellent quality, you will also find useful the patch with a hall reverb and digital delay, which I adjust for slapback, as well as the tremolo and vibrato loops. If you want to use these modulation effects, in addition to a good reverb, you will need an external pedal, and there is no effects loop. Like the old days, everything goes in a straight line through the instrument input jack; just be sure you check the pedals in your chain individually for ambient and switching noise, because your preamp tone stack controls are going to significantly amplify everything going on in your pedals. My choices include a ModTone Coliseum Reverb, an MXR Silicon Fuzz, and an EH Soul Preacher compressor/sustainer. These, in addition to the effects on board the Super Champ, cover all the necessary bases, especially with cover songs from the 60's on up to the early 80's. With the standard two button Fender footswitch, you can change channels, even with voicing between two different Fender clean channels of the past, or a modern higher gain channel from a Marshall, and turn your on board effects on and off as needed with your front end pedals. This amp is a sleeper, the tone is amazing, and you will not regret one cent of this purchase. I got this to play at gigs and fill in to gaps for 60s and 70s classic rock numbers. It sounded great mic's with just enough stage sound for sustain. I especially liked the foot switch layout to flip between clean and dirty numbers when covering Stones, Bowie, Mott The Hoople, Doobie Bros and stuff, but needed help with a pedal with early metal sounds. Still, found it a very flexible amp overall. About eight months in it got a hissing sound and was useless as a mic'd amp through the PA. It was still under warranty, and – long story short – they repaired the hiss by replacing some circuit components, but after a few weeks it came back. The is the one time I wished I got the replacement warranty. I ended up giving it away to a friend who tinkers in electronics. Do and internet search and you'll see this amp has a long history of hiss and other noise problems that are hard to isolate. That said, I know of some players who liked this amp very much and it never let them down, so I'm not hating on Fender. I like the Fender sound and own a very reliable 65' Twin two Blues Deluxe Issues. If you really must have this amp, I'd recommend getting the full replacement warranty.RJ

Just purchased this beautiful blond amp. The clean channel is perfect. Decent gain. Reverb is adequate. Highly recommend purchasing the amp head and the 2X12 cab because you get two Clesetion Vintage 30's vise the single Eminence in the combo. Sound great out of the box even before the tubes are burned in and the speakers broken in. I'll say this again, the clean channel is perfect, Les Paul, Strat, Tele, ES 195 with P90's and effects never sounded better. Gives this bad boy a test drive, you wont be disappointed. If you have never used a tube amp, 22 watts is quite a bit of power compared to solid state, possibly two to three time the power. Yes! this amp can get quite loud. Perfect for small gigs. Highly portable and easy to move and transport.Karl

I purchased one after hearing it at a friends house jam. It stood up against the Bass and Drums with power to spare. Great little amp with a combination of vintage tube power, some Fender blackface effects like Reverb and Vibrotone with multiple presets. Also mode effects such as Digital Delay and Chorus. Some say the stock 8 inch speaker is not enough and should be replaced with a 10 inch speaker. With line out it works as a stage amp linked to the main PA system. LIght weight compared to just about anything else. Hard to believe this is a 15 watt amplifier. My only issue might be the endless mode and wide range of amp emulations I'm sifting through. The price isn't bad either. Because of its versatility, if I hand to choose only one amp this would be the one.oneidatrail

I was looking for a small, easy to transport 15w or lower practice amp that if I wanted could also be used for small gig. I have always been partial to Marshall amps but was also looking at Vox, but after much research and listening to a product comparison video on YouTube, I decided to purchase the Fender Super Champ XD (not X2). The sound I heard from the video convinced me that it had the growl I love but could also provide the standard Fender clean. It has a voicing program which allows you to dial in just about any sound you want, which was also a nice option that lead me to go with this amp. The thing I like most about the amp is its sound for its size. It can be very loud for a small amp but doesn't lose any definition at lower volumes. The voicing program is wonderful and allows you to dial in practically any sound you want. I can easily pick it up and carry it from room to room withouth throwing out my back. Another positive is that even for a small amp it can be heard over an aggressive drummer without being mic'd up. The dislike, and it isn't something that makes me say I wish I didn't do this because I knew it going in, is that it's only a 10" Fender speaker (which I replaced with a 10" Eminence Ragin Cajun, which greatly increased and improved the sound). I wish Fender would have manufactured these with a 12" speaker. Wow, that would have been an awsome amp! The other thing I did was to switch out the Groove Tubes for Tung-Sol 12AX7 and JJ 6V6's. The one thing I was thinking about but didn't do was to purchase a larger cabinet that could handle a 12" speaker (they have them on ebay that fit the Super Champ XD). With the changes that I did make in the speaker and the tubes, it is now a very good sounding practice amp that can easily be heard over an aggressive drummer and could be used in small venue gigs. The Fender Super Champ XD compared to other amps in its size is a very good choice, especially when you look at the price tag. The YouTube video I watched when deciding on what amp to purchase compared Vox AC4TV, Fender Super Champ XD, Marshall Class 5 and Blackstar HT5 (was my 2nd choice). Although each amp had s very distinct and imnpressive sound, the Super Champ XD just caught my ear and upon research I found that many others, including recording musicians had used this amp. The only thing is that Fender doesn't build the XD anymore, it was replaced with the X2 which was suppose to be an upgrade and improved product but from what I have read they actually declined in sound. Bottom line is that I was happy with my purchase of the Super Champ XD as it was but I am very happy with it after the upgrades in speaker and tubes and would definately purchase this product again and recommend it to others.ranger518vx

This little amp is perfect for anyone looking for a low wattage but still big sounding workhorse. Channel 1 is pure Fender clean. It takes pedals perfectly. Channel 2 has all the different amp modeling settings and several are very usable. #10 is very much like the hot rod series amps. Really decent. #4 and #5 are decent clean settings as well. I don't really mess with the heavy distorted models and you can imagine what they sound like. For a serious player, it is a wonderful little studio or live amp if you want low wattage clean tones that hold up well with pedals.zilchman

I've been playing guitar since a kid. My Dad used to own a guitar store where he was an amp technician. I'll always remember sneaking into his room when he wasn't home and playing his salmon pink Strat and Twin reverb amp. There was always a magic in them and they really inspired me. Fast forward 30 years and I've grown up just like him. Been playing professionally for a long time through some pretty nice gear but something in me always wanted to revisit that amp, it just had the perfect sounds I played lots of amps before choosing a Marshall 50w plexi as my amp of choice for gigging and it was good, no doubt a about that, played it for almost 15 years straight until one day buying that Twin I'd always so wished I also had. Found I played it far more than the plexi so actually ended up selling the Marshall and just sticking with the 65' reissue! It does everything the Marshall did and more I think. Playing them side by side before making the final decision to sell set my mind at ease because I couldnl get the same sounds from the Twin. Even did a little A/B recording with overdrive and no one could pick which one was which I play mainly classic rock and this amp is everything I'll ever need. Small wattage Amos always sound and feel small to me so was never interested in them, of it's too loud turn it down, the volume is far better than the plexi because that one sat on a hair trigger, really difficult to get a bedroom volume out of. The Twin is quote easy and pot smooth to use. Plexi goes from 0-almost full volume at half way to 1 on the dial. Love itJez

I received the amp yesterday and have only played it (both the vibrato and normal channel) for about half an hour in my living room, but I was so impressed that I wanted to go ahead and write a review, which I almost never do. I've been playing electric guitar almost 50 years and have owned many different amps, almost all Marshall or Fender, including a late 60s or early 70s 100 watt Marshall (no master volume), a mid 70s silver face Twin Reverb and Dual Showman, a 1987X 50 watt Marshall reissue, a '59 Bassman reissue (before the LTD version), a '65 Super Reverb reissue, a Twinolux, and a standard '65 Deluxe Reverb reissue. The only other amp I have currently is a wine red '65 Deluxe Reverb reissue (DRRI) with a P12Q Jensen speaker. The '65 DRRI has been one of my favorites. I like the 6V6 sound and I think it's hard to get a bad sound out of that amp. I really like the clarity of the 64 Custom Deluxe Reverb compared to my '65 DRRI. It is noticeably brighter than my '65 DRRI, but part of that may be because the '64 has a C12Q speaker while my current '65 DRRI has a P12Q speaker. Since reverb and vibrato work on both channels of this '64 Custom Deluxe Reverb, the vibrato channel is like having the bright switch on (it reminds me of the way my super reverb sounded with the bright switch on) and the normal channel is like having the bright switch off. I like the way both the reverb and vibrato work and sound on this '64 more than the '65 DRRI. The same guitar (a Strat with '69 custom shop pickups) has noticeably longer sustain when I play it through this '64 compared to my '65 DRRI. Some people have mentioned a possible problem with noise (hiss or hum) from this amp, due to the way the channels are connected together, but I hear virtually no noise at all from this amp, not when it is sitting still (with both normal and vibrato channels turned up to 3), and not when I turn any of the knobs. I wish I had bought this amp in the first place instead of the '65 DRRI.Kenneth

I was really surprised at how good this amp sounds. Years ago I tried Line 6 and was not at all happy with the tone; but this is another story. It does take me awhile to dial in a specific classic rock tone, but when I do, it sounds better than any other amp that I've tried. I have tried the Marshall Code, Blackstar id Core, Vox Valvetronix, Boss Katana; as well as some all tube amps. The only other amp that is a close 2nd is the Fender Mustang GTX; also a great amp. The Spider V is fairly easy to operate. It offers lots of choices for amp models and cabinets. I like that it has variations of a mic'd cabinet. The parametric eq is a plus. I haven't played around too much with the effects yet, so I can't comment on that. The only negative thing I could say is that when you're editing a preset and want to hear how it sounds before you save it, you only have a short time before it goes back to the Home Screen. This really is a small price to pay for the quality of the amp and all the versatility it has. I like the App too. Musicians Friend got me a great on this as well; and their agent is following up making sure that I'm satisfied. The funny thing is that I came across this by accident. I placed an order for a Peavey amp that was on back order. I called Peavey multiple times, but they never returned my call. I also emailed them, but they didn't respond to that either. As far as I'm concerned, Peavey doesn't have any customer support.crrkr

Been playing about a year, so my review is from the perspective of a complete newbie. The things I like- Lots of presets, mobile app functions, computer interface, and loads of user created effects available. Nice and loud, but no real basis of comparison to say if clarity is better or worse than other comparable amps. Don't likes- The micro-usb interface. I had to get an adapter and it's just not as good a connection as nearly anything else would be. IMHO, micro-usb is far too flimsy. Connecting to PC is far more problematic than just using the spider mobile app. It's probably a little more complicated than it should be for a beginner, but it's feature rich for the money.Nic T

I had a Line 6 120w amp for years that I regrettably sold a while ago and was looking for another amp. I looked at all the amp reviews I could find and decided that the new Katana was the way to go. I got the Katana home and absolutely loved it but the second day I had it it started a really loud buzzing that I couldn't stop. It probably was an easy fix but the fact is the amp was way too powerful for my purposes and their software wasn't compatible with the new Catalina OS. I returned and started looking again. I saw the 60w Spider V and the price was excellent so I made an on the spot decision to buy another Line 6 and I'm really glad I did. The tones this amp can get are incredible. There are so many amp models and cabs that you can dial in pretty much any tone you want from a crispy snapback country clean to the most vicious heavy metal and everything in between. You can use the presets as they are or you can use them as a baseline and tweak to your own liking or you can start from scratch and build your own rig from the ground up. The controls are intuitive and easy to use but there are some features where you'd have to be a professional to really know how to use or even care to use. The software and the mobile app are so easy to use and give you all the options at your fingertips. The amp comes with a lot of presets that I find are completely useless but there are a lot that are excellent as I already talked about. There are only four empty slots for your own custom presets and I wish there were more but if you use the mobile app you can have your own tone library on there. I bought the FBV3 foot controller so that gives me a lot of flexibility to have various effects. One of the limitations is the lack of good effects though. There's enough that if you work at it you can get a decent sound but there could be some better ones. Overall I would recommend the amp. Don't listen to the naysayers or the amp snobs, it's a quality amp and extremely versatile.Just Plain Joe

I bought this amp to have a small, cheap portable amp to play harmonica through. For that, it is decent enough. I use a Shure bullet mic and the amp produces good enough tone and is plenty loud for practice or small gigs. When I plug my tele into it the clean channel is decent and clear, but the overdrive channel is junk and hurts my ears. I would rather run the clean channel and use a fuzz or distortion pedal. So that being said it is decent enough to practice licks on and it is tiny so it tucks away easy. If you look around you can find a bigger amp with more features used for the same price but if you want a new amp, this one is probably worth what they charge for it. I would only buy it if you have a specific purpose for it though.Roy

It's small, and pretty portable. However, the sound quality is trash, given the speaker is tiny, but the overdrive is just horrible. If you buy this, try returning it. If you can't return it, just get a fuzz pedal and leave it on clean. Imo, just buy the mustang lt25-50Hotdog Games

Overall: Recieved this amp on saturday. Took it out of the box, looked great. plug in to 4*12 marshall cabinet and turned on to standby. Plugged in my Westbury custom to test. From the very beginning to was cracking, snapping then full blown static. I played all of two minutes before it started picking up radio signals and static was loud. No guitar signal was heard. Im not sure if its inherent in these amps but I am returning and not wanting another egnater productsVito

My Tweaker 15 half stack is my primary gigging amp. I don't like a ton of stage volume, and in any case this little rig is a lot louder than you'd expect from 15 watts. Using an angled-back stand for the cab, I can point it at my ear level and hear myself just fine w/o having to have guitar in the monitors. Hang an e906 in front of the speaker, and good to go. This rig's best feature is the broad range of useful tones. The various toggles and knobs actually DO something. Since I switch up between twp very different guitars (ES-335 to G&L SC2) in our current live sets, making a couple-three quick changes gets each guitar into its sweet spot and at the right volume easily. Foot-switchability would be even better, but it's quick enough. The gain control is particularly well done. There's some real range, not the "all or nothing" thing that a lot of amps' gain controls give. The Vintage/Modern voicing toggle offers distinct differences, as well. This rig takes pedals nicely. I use both individual stompboxes (recording) and an M13 (live…don't hate!), and both sound good. The one thing I dinged it a little on was that the lower ranges on the Master Volume aren't as useful as I hoped they would be when using the Gain. There's a big, non-linear jump in volume in the first quarter of the dial's movement. Not only does this jump bypass the volume I really wanted (for apartment playing), but the tone on the low side of that volume jump isn't nearly as good as the tone AFTER the jump. Not a problem on stage or even recording, but for those who have to be concerned about volume at times, it's not an ideal practice amp. Bottom line: a lot of great tones at a price that makes touring with it less nerve-wracking.David K

This amp provides a much better value than similarly designed amps by the top manufacturers. I was looking for small wattage amp to get natural tube break-up (previously playing 100 watt fender twin) at small room club-approved volume. I was down to this amp vs. Mesa Express 25 watt. Although the small Mesa's like the Express and TA models have more channels, I just really felt that the 2 channels of the Egnater were more versatile and responsive. I truly feel this amp does the best job of getting a Fender-ish clean and a Marshall-y overdrive in 1 amp. The overdrive channel is what really sold me. The dynamics make it really fun to play. It can get very saturated without sounding metal, and it compresses naturally. I've used on a couple recordings and can't believe the sound is coming from one 12" speaker and a 30 watt head. Sounds way bigger. This channel can also be used as more of a dirty clean channel. That is my one major qualm with this amp though… I like that the new 2 channel tweaker has a gain knob on both channels. I wish I could get a Stones-ish breakup sound using the clean channel on this amp without turning up to 10. So i'm forced to use a pedal and that's just not the same. Oh well, can't have everthing. I still wouldn't get the 2 channel tweaker because this overdrive channel is better to my ears – way more dynamic and responsive. The clean channel is stll great and I can turn it up to like 6 on gigs and get warm sounds. It can still get me the Fender cleans that I need – or close to them while still having a solid overdrive sound at the same time. That's the big win here. I agree with most that the wattage knobs are pratically useless – but to me, having both set of tubes is so cool. Clean channel can truly sound either Fender or Vox on 6V6 vs. EL84. I love being able to get Stratty Fender sounds with 6V6 and then flip to EL84 and get my Tom Petty sounds going. The distortion is slightly creamier with 6V6 but I like the feel changes depending on what guitar I'm playing. In general, it's nice to have 6V6 for strats and EL84's for Les Pauls all in 1 amp. I've had no issues with this amp (knock on wood) and have played steadily for over a year. Overall, this amp has 2 great channels instead of 4 decent channels. That's how I feel about it. Again, I wish they would have thrown a gain knob on the cleans for a slight break-up at low volume, but that is my only qualm. Amazing little tube amp! If you're looking at getting your first tube amp, this is a highly recommended starter amp. It sounds great as a studio amp and it gets plenty loud given it's 15W, which makes it suitable for smaller gigs. With the volume turned down, it sounds really clean, but it breaks up pretty nicely around 6-8. It also handles pedals and overdrive pretty well (especially with the fat switch engaged). The Jensen C-12N sounds really nice. The cabinet is particle board, which might be a con for some people, but it's not a deal breaker considering the price. Fender really got it right with the Gen IIIs, which is probably why they're still selling pretty well.Matt T.

I spent six months trying to decide between the tweed Blues Jr., the Blues Jr. IV, the Vox AC15, and the Roland JC40 (a bit of an outlier in this list), and finally decided to go with the tweed after several visits to GC and many side-by-side comparisons. I'm not a serious blues player, nor do I spend much time with classic rock influenced jamming/noodling, but was looking for an amp with a stellar clean sound for playing clean or as a canvas for pedals, decent distortion, and surfy spring reverb. The Vox is classic for a reason, but the clean tone was lacking personality. The built in tremolo is great, but the reverb wasn't heavy enough for me (although many others complain that it is a bit too much for them), and the overdrive tone wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Otherwise, it seemed well constructed and had a great look. The Roland JC40 is a solid state amp, so very quiet in comparison to the others in the list. I only was considering this because it has an incredible sounding chorus and is an otherwise perfect canvas for pedals, but the clean tone was bland and the drive couldn't compare to that of a tube amp. The standard Blues Jr IV sounds boxy and dark in comparison to the tweed, and the reverb tank is much more subtle. Although it has a good Fender clean tone, it is somehow lacking. The tweed is bright, really bright, but that is what I want. The reverb is killer. I imagine very few people will max it out, or even keep it above half-way, but I absolutely love to crank it up and get a super wet classic surf tone. Keeping the volume low and maxing out the master volume retains a good deal of clean chime without breaking too much, yet can begin to breakup if you have a heavy strum. Maxing out the (pre-amp) volume gives you a decent crunch, which only gets better as you turn up the master (Communication Breakdown sound). Yet, this gets LOUD, pushing beyond home use volumes. I am happy with my choice, but recommend you test your optionsRyan

The magic started as soon as I turned the amp on. This little amp has personality, with the retro look I felt as I had traveled to a time long past. This amplifier sounds great, it's actually loud, and the tones are nice and simple. I pair it with my favorite pedals, and I blast off to a whole other world of pure creativity. If you're wanting a classic sound to fiddle with, I highly recommend this beauty. I even purchased a cover for it since I was worried it would get dirty or our cat would treat it as a scratching post. It not very heavy or big and doesn't consume much electricity and is capable of being loud enough to bother your neighbors, since it's a very simple amp, you'll have to get your pedal collection ready. I hooked my crybaby and fuzz pedals and I swear I connected in some way with Hendrix himself. This little amp isn't just for blues or jazz, crank up the volume and you'll get some loud distortion. My only con would be that I wish it had a built-in spring reverb just like the BJrIV. but I already have 2 different pedals that do the job. Anyway, you'll spend hours just mixing and matching all your favorite pedals. Have fun players, this is a good one.Kevin

I'm a Fender fan to the core. I love their electric guitars and amps but their Amps aren't even affordable anymore. They've completely out priced themselves and either you are going to pay for a severely overpriced bare bones amp or a severely overpriced amp with far more electronics than a lot of us care to deal with. This is a great sized combo amp that's easy to use and has a great sound and plenty of power and all at a great price!!! There is no reason Fender couldn't do more of this…combo's that aren't easy to use with plenty of effects and a fair price for blue collar musicians. I used a Fender Princeton Chorus combo this same size mic'd through a sound system for over two decades and it started having issues. This was the closest amp I could get (and afford). The 100 has everything you need in a combo amp and at a fraction of the price of everything else Fender makes. Buy it! You won't be disappointed!Josh

I bought this amp because my gig amp died a cyber twin 2-12s 100 watts that was about 16 years old. I have had many Fender amps they were great. I do country and 50s and 60s rock and roll. I figured 100 watts would put it out there and it does. At performing volume, the distortion is a pure heavy metal on the clean channel. Mine is not much good for high volume for my type of music. I have an old champion 110 75 watt that I will be using It has worked for me when the others were down. Not sure what to do.stev_majo

Sound: With the second channel .First it had the twin reverb and super sonic voicing with a chain loop for pedals I was set on that alone. When it got to the house and realized I didn't need my pedal chain and it sounds amazing even though ill still use my pedals here and there. The bassman, tweeds , Princeton all clean or dirty are amazing to play . again to get those sounds with out the tubes and speakers is amazing.. You get volumes that punch against you that are clear without any nasty whitenoise or unwanted sounds. the dirty settings added with the compression build in make all that possible. Outta all my guitars I enjoy to plug into this amp .My 63 firebird , g400 s.g. and my jaguar Ease of Use: Its real easy for me to get the sounds I need .I'm well aware of all the amps they used for the voicing.For new players it might take a little to understand but with no time you'll understand how to dial it in and add the right effects to the amp models to get those amazing fender amps . Quality: Only had it for a week but as for holding it up and down 3 flights of stairs at the studio in Philadelphia id say the strap is well build . Speakers have not blown but I have not had to dial all the way up amps loud as it is half way . Value: yes it is im surprised its not another $100 more.Wish more companies would do this. Got the 6L6 5150 Black Stealth last fall…it is incredible but there was something about this EL34 after watching several demos and deciding it needed to be home with its 6L6 Brother. The EL34 cleans are crystal like and pristine! Channel 2 has that grit, warmth, clarity yet buttery rock goodness! Channel 3 is excellent to round out and take the lead. This amp has been great in inspiration, performance and recording. It was more than I hoped for even with the positive reviews and demos. It is easy to dial in a sweet tone. In fact, I have done so blindly and it just makes each note resonate and stand out. I have it running through a JCM 1960 A cab. Together, they RAWK! Another awesome thing about this amp is the headphone jack for late night practice and you can get sweet tones without shaking the house unlike other amps of this nature. The green (clean) channel on this amp through the 2×12 cabinet is absolutely incredibly. Expressive, responsive, articulate, and full of character. I recently tried out a Divided by 13 LDW amp and was blown away by the clean tone. I had always considered myself a Fender/6V6 person until that point. That amp was already sold, was twice the price, and is impossible to come across. This amp is the only one I could find that has both the EL34s and 12AX7s, and has that same unique clean tone that's somewhere between a Marshall and Fender in all the right ways. I could do without the red channel entirely, and would prefer to have separate eq controls for the green and blue channels, but easy enough to compensate with a tone knob.Faisal

Wanted a tube amp and did my research. Decided on the Blackstar. I must say I'm extremely happy with it. The reverb is KILLER to my ear and does a great job at adding shimmer without destroying the tone. No external effects are needed to get a gorgeous clean tone – I use my Zoom G3Xn into the front end to get univibe and compression. The effects loop is very functional. The amp can be very bass heavy, depending on your instrument, but if you run a 10 band EQ (go with MXR) in the loop you amp can achieve any tonal result you want. My best sound comes with everything at 12, with some of the bass rolled off with the MXR EQ – but its just a matter of taste i guess. This amp moves a lot of air when you use the drive channel, and if your not pleased with the amps distortion it does respond really well to distortion pedals. I'm mostly in the clean blues zone but must brag on the amps darker side: it can get very loud and stay rich. I haven't tried any of the direct recording features. The 2 selectable characters of clean that the amp offers thrill me and ,again, the reverb is classy and a bit different from other amps ( I read that is a room reverb). Highly recommended.Tim H.

This amp out of the box sounds fantastic. Crystal clear clean tones and a snarly gain channel that lets you choose between a more American gain tone and a British gain tone. I would say ‘cater for everyone’. But, I received my first amp and within an hour of playing I’d noticed a loud ‘POP’ when changing channels. This pop occurred if a note was being played at the same time as the channel change. (Footswitch and Amp buttons) So, of course I returned the Amp to PMT. they arranged DPD next working day collection for me, completely hassle free. I awaited my next amp, as a direct replacement. A few days later the next Blackstar HT-5R mkii arrived, box fresh like the last. I plugged the amp in, let the tubes warm and away I went. Within minutes of found a great tone again, but the loud ‘POP’ I heard from the first unit was there again on this amp. I tried 4 sockets in the house in case there was any kind of interference/static, but to no avail. Absolutely gutted, I called PMT again. The amp was returned for the second time. Apparently this hasn’t happened to anyone else, I may just be unlucky or the amp may not get along with the electrics in my home. Just check this out as soon as you buy one. I’ve tried two other valve amps on my house since, including a Blackstar Artist 10 AE and an Orange terror with cab, and there’s absolutely zero noise with these. Very important to note here, this is not a slam of PMT, they’ve been absolutely brilliant throughout this whole thing. Customer service is second to none and they are very easy to contact. As others have written, I too chuckled when opening the box. It’s smaller than I thought it’d be. However, it can crank. Teamed it up with an Orange PPC12 and scared the neighbors dog. I play a Rockerverb onstage and figured hey I'll grab a micro Terror for the studio when I'm working on demoes and practicing. Everyone raves about how it does the Rockerverb thing so hey why not? Don't bother. At best it's a little practice amp but I honestly like my Hotone Heart Attack better. This terror is kind of scratchy and just a little league sound. I love Orange amps but this one pales in comparison to the classics. I guess you get what you pay for but I expected more than this.jq127

I bought this with a ppc108 cabinet – as my review for that cab says, I was very surprised how good and powerful they are together. I thought I would eventually get a larger cabinet for it, but i would only need to if using it for a live performance with a full band. (might be able to get away with ppc108 with a quiet drummer…) For just playing by myself or jamming with other guitar/bass players it is more than enough. This amp can get you great classic rock tone – but I play all styles of music and generally more jazz and hard rock sometimes into the metal range – and this sounds great for that as well. For full on metal you might want to add your favorite distortion pedal but the tube overdrive of the amp itself sounds fantastic! I haven't tried myself but this thing can drive a 4X12 cabinet pretty well according to videos that I've seen. It really sounds like a slightly scaled back version of a full amp head. for the price you will not be disappointed. You could definitely use this for amateur recording – probably professional recording as well but by then you've probably got a bigger amp. Any one who wants a tube amp to mess around with but doesn't have a lot of money to throw around should check this out – or if you just want something very portable. Note that this is a hybrid, it has solid state power and one tube for the preamp, but don't be afraid, it sounds great! It's louder than you might expect and although with the ppc108 it dosen't have extreme low end, it still has good low tones when used with six string guitars in standard as well as C tuning and I have used it with an 8 string guitar, which flops a little on the low string but with a larger cabinet would probably be fine. I highly recommend this amazing tiny amp. Watch some youtube videos if you aren't convinced. For portability the ppc108 cabinet works very well with this and still sounds very nice, but again you can power larger cabinets including 4X12.valvetuber42

Love my Fender 15, got it a Thrift store for much less than a new one, it was in great shape and sounds awesome, with rich deep sound. Alot louder than I figured on before I got home to try it out. Its very well Builth box and high-end knobs with a vintage Fender look. I highly recommend this little amp for convenient practice or when on the go to jam with friends. The separate Mic input and volume knobs are nice when you want to sing and play at the same time. I have a huge 4 speaker Yamaha Amp that is huge, but this little amp rivals it when both are set at lower volumes. Also, this one is easier to carry on the go, and mine sets in my living room next to my guitar for easy practicing while my huge one takes up too much space in there, so I only roll it out when needed.jimdandy-2007

Purchased as Xmas present for my teenage daughter who is a budding acoustic guitar player but also plays electric occasionally with clean tones only (no use or need for distortion or overdrive). Small size and ample volume for her needs make it great addition to her room. Lovely clean sound for her Yamaha electro-acoustic and my Fender Strat (which she has stolen!!). Built in chorus is nice addition but nowhere near as nice a sound as a dedicated pedal. Sufficient tone control and option for mic as well plus headphones out if desired. I played a solid state boutique amp for years. It was a 100 watt Pearce amp, with a 2-12'' cabinet. As the great Amos Garrett once said, "The older you get, the smaller your amps get." I decided to go tube and purchased the '60s Fender Princeton and Delux Reverb re-makes. The '65 Delux Reverb remake is simply the best sounding amp I've ever played. I play classic rock, jazz, blues and some world music. It excels, and I mean excels, in every context. Warm, articulate and clean, and the break-up is just so silky. I had a '68 Super Reverb ($400 new back then!) which I sold back in the 1970's. Loved it! Big mistake parting with it (look what their selling for now!). I recently tried a Fender Champion 40. The Champ was a good amp, but just didn't match the tone and warmth of a tube amp. My '65 Deluxe Reverb is ear candy! Although it lacks the "horsepower" of the Super (my gig days are behind me now so I don't need it), it still has enough muscle to rattle your teeth and fill the room. More importantly it was instant smiles and fond memories the minute I fired it up! My Strat, '61 SG and Fender Acoustic (all from AMS!) lit it up! I couldn't be more pleased and impressed. Highly recommend the amp and AMS! Ordered Friday, arrived Sunday, and their payment plans make getting my gear from them simple, easy, affordable and a "no-brainer". My next purchase is already in my cart! High fives to AMS for excellent product lines and outstanding customer service! Just a classic Fender tone. The clarify of the clean tone is outstanding. Can get a great crunch tone as well when you get the volume above about 4. I play a lot of styles and have a lot of amps. I think I still prefer my Marshall JVM for very saturated distorted tones, but have been having a ball trying different overdrive pedals with the amp–which it takes very well. If you are ok using pedals to craft different tones, this can be a very versatile amp for all styles.Robb

The 65 SRRI is a very interesting amp that I've had quite a good amount of experience with now, owning a total of 3 of the reissues, 1 from 2001 and 2 from 2017. In my estimation first and foremost, the amp is too loud. If using this for anything but LOUD outdoor/indoor shows, than you're wasting your time and money. The good qualities of this amp are that it handles treble frequencies unlike any way I've ever heard an amp before. Not to be cliche, but it can really only be experienced what "touch-sensitivity" means in this amp. It's a really weird experience because you hear things you don't normally hear, and they're pronounced really articulately. This in my opinion is why Texas Flood sounded the way it did, there's all these harmonics going on that aren't normally produced at low volumes, in a 1×12 cabinet. So now the negatives, this amp is not a jazz amp, it's not a metal or even high-gain amp. It's clean, it's loud, and that's how it works. The 10-inch speakers cut out alot of bottom end that 12 inch speakers give, so you get a very narrow, focused frequency range. I think the speakers themselves and the voicing of the amp in combination give you that sound, but nonetheless the amp doesn't lend itself to anything less than bright, tight, and focused. It doesn't sway from that sound no matter how you EQ it. How I used the amp was in my apartment and it's too loud, too specific of a sound, and is just a real problem unless you need both of the qualities mentioned. If you want loud, clean, and nothing else, this is your amp. I would recommend this product based on it's quality and sound, but only if the person who wanted it needed what it has to offer.Nathan

To preface… I've owned pretty much all the major Fender amps at one point or another. Blues Jrs, Blues Deluxe, Hot Rod Deluxe & Deville, Supersonic, 65 Deluxe Reverb, 65 Princeton, 65 Twin Reverb, 68 custom Princeton Twin & Deluxe and the buck stops here. This is currently the best sounding, most versatile amp that Fender makes, and probably the closest an amp has ever come to being perfect. If you're looking for the world's greatest clean tone/pedal platform/sublime breakup this is it. Period. Save yourself a bunch of money and time and just buy it. One and done. I had a friend recommend me this expensive/heavy beast of an amp years ago and I didn't listen.. turned off by the price and weight. I proceeded to own almost every other Fender but none of them lit me up inside like this one. The reverb is heaven, the tremolo is perfect, it sounds WONDERFUL at 2 on the volume for home practice and WONDERFUL at 3-4 for a gig. Yes it's awkward to carry, yes it's heavy-ish (altho not as much as the twin), but none of that matters because of the sound it produces. It will highlight your playing dynamics, and the true sound of your guitar like no other amp. It will inspire you to play more, it will make you play above your abilities, it gives back. It can handle any kind of music. It sounds great with any guitar you throw at it (although you absolutely must experience it with a strat). It's got tilt back legs which along with the vintage style slot tuners are probably Leo's greatest underappreciated inventions. Don't expect to get this bad boy to break up at home or smaller stage volumes, arm yourself with some good OD pedals. It produces an extremely loud, FULL, 3D sound which spreads across the stage. BONUS- a little known fact… the often neglected normal channel makes a fantastic bass amp. Just try it! If you want an amp you will own for life, an amp to kill your amp GAS once and for all, when only the absolute best will do… the SR is your amp.Strataholic

This little amp is quite amazing in sound and features. With the Guitar input, Aux In, and headphone jack it nails the features desired for practice. EQ/Gain control and volume can make a huge difference. I read the one critical review below about no bass or treble/AM radio sounding, etc…I don't get that? Probably doesn't understand the gain/vol/ and boost…or his was pre-owned and maybe had issues. Hey, if you're expecting the Fender tube sound of a Princeton or Vibrolux or Deluxe…get real, this is a 10 watt practice amp. Im really disappointed with this amp. I know its not supposed to be super loud because its only 10 W, but I was hoping that the sound quality would be better. The sound reproduction frequencies are all mid range. Sounds like cardboard. Color is grey. Bass and treble tones are all but nonexistent. The eq is useless because speaker cannot reproduce bass and treble frequencies. The sound is very cheap and does not give a representation of the Fender vibe whatsoever. You are better off just playing your guitar with no amplifier at all rather than using this, because it make a good guitar sound bad. I equate the sound to that of an a.m. transistor radio. Its really bad. I actually read some of the favorable reviews on this amplifier before I bought it, and Im seriously starting to think that none of those reviews are actually real. There are better practice amps with better fidelity out there, and I would avoid this one if your ear demands quality sound.mrmarksiii

Great amplifier, especially for the money. First of all it is an amazing pedal platform amp with nice bass and mid response. Everything I've run into it sounds really good, and it's near breakup gain is gain on 10 and boost off. It is most like a JTM45, it has a lot more bass and more active tone controls than later Marshall amplifiers like the JCM900 I previously owned. It doesn't overdrive too much on its own, but if you push it with a booster, it does pretty well. It is loud, even in the low power setting, and to really get it to drive, you need to push the power amp. It also doesn't seem to have as much drive as I remember from trying a 50 watt version, but that may have been the guitar more than the amp. Great value, I would recommend it to anyone looking for what I just described. If you want something that sounds like a Super Lead, Super Bass, or JCM800, this is not the right thing to buy. If you want a great pedal platform or early Marshall sound, you can't beat it.Craig

I've had My Marshall Origin for about 6 months and I've been pleasantly surprised. I've been a Les Paul/Marshall guy for 40 years and I have the hearing loss to prove it but this Marshall has it all. This versatile 20 watt head is the perfect combination of versatility and guts.This Amp is perfect for pedals as it great grand daddies were, I use an J Rockett Archer Ikon Klon clone, An OCD a Tone City King of Blues and an original Electro harmonics LPB-1 booster. I can go from crystal clear bell like tones to Ace's plexi grind to the verge of jCM 800 tones or straight in crank the Gain and get that sweet traditional Marshall tone and attack. Unlike the Marshalls of old the EQ section greatly influences the color of this Head and along with the tilt control which replaces the need to jump channels from the Hi and Lo inputs its all there. The addition of the switchable effects loop is a huge plus as is the gain/Boost control which gives you that little extra edge for leads. Running the amp on full and using your guitars volume and tone controls gives you a lot of versatility as well. The adjustable power out put feature is nice for quiet practice but I prefer to use my Bugera PS-1 attenuator and keep my amp volume on 10, just a personal preference. A suggestion, I've used this head with 1×12 and 2×12 cabinets an it sounds good but when i finally plugged it into a 4×12 this amp took on a whole new personality. The 4×12 let this amp breathe and with the EH LPB-1 driving the front end and a little reverb I had ACE's Kiss alive tone dead on by using the gain boost and a little color from various pedals the tone possibilities a vast. All in all this amp would be a great deal at twice the price, marshall once again did it right.Miggs

I have owned several amps in the last 40yrs. Always looking for "that tone" and never quite found it. Peavey's a Marshall and a Carvin. The last being a 100W head. And with all of them and a line 6 floor pod, was never happy. I am so happy with this head on my 4×12 marshall cab that all I have used the floor pod for is the tuner. I'm sure at some point I will probably use the pod for some effects, but for what I mostly play its not really needed. Of course there are many things that can effect this so ill just give a short list of the main guitars I use and the pickups. Gibson Les Paul with Slash Seymour Duncan's, wired 50's and a Gibson 137 all stock. I no longer play out so the 100w Carvin was just not good in my basement. Couldn't push it to the point of natural breakup in a confined space. This amp goes from almost crystal clean to a beautiful natural saturation. And the dirty channel picks up where the clean leaves off and goes to the verge of metal. Throw a overdrive pedal in the mix and there isn't much you couldn't play on the fly.Brad B

I have had it for a week and love it. It goes from super clean to full on metal overdrive. Price was good—delivered quick. Seems well built enough. The only thing I would change is to give the clean / classic channel some crunch so i could go from a light crunch to a heavy lead sound when switching channels because the clean channel is clean even when fully cranked. The DSL100 has a crunch option on the clean channel so it would be nice to have it here as well. But you can use the ultra gain channel and use the guitar volume to clean it up etc. I assume the clean channel would take pedals well from other reviews I have seen. Overall it rocks and gets really loud. Gig-able I think. Highly recommended.Tuckerman

I bought 2 of these heads to drive Marshall MX12 cabinets. I was previously using 2 Marshall DSL40CR combo amps. I thought I could save space by having the small heads instead. I was wrong. FYI, the DSL40CR amps sound great (mine are upgraded with Creamback speakers). First off, the amps both had horrific white noise when you turned up the reverb. 2) one amp made some weird static noise when you moved your hand around the face plate, touching the face plate actually changed the tone. I have never in my almost 30 years of using guitar amps had this. 3) The amps sounded thin and tinny. To the point they were unusable. I returned them for a refund and when both amps arrived at Musicians Friend, they stated that they only received one amp (although both amps arrived the same day). A day later the 2ne amp was marked as received. I received one amps refund on Saturday, and now I guess I have to wait till Monday for the second refund. What a joke. BTY, I also ordered a brand new EHX pedal when I bought the amps and they sent me a used one instead! Musicians Friend is such a joke now a days it's sad.MLM
