I've been playing resonators for over 45 years and I've had everything from 50's Nationals, Dobros etc. The CE (same as the Rouge brand guitar only better) sounds good but not great, worthy of a resonator upgrade to a Beard maybe. I would describe the sound as a bit midrange but flat wound strings would help that a lot. It plays great right out of the box but remember it's a biscuit guitar so they never tune as accurate as a standard guitar. So why is this such a great value? An $800 Gretchen or Fender of the same style will sound better but nowhere close to $400 better and they lack some great features of the CE. It comes with much needed Grover tuners and NO slotted head, notorious for breaking, a pickup that sounds pretty good, surprisingly good workmanship (I'm being really hard on my review), a removable bridge cover which is a huge plus for bridge adjustments and the best feature is the neck configuration. Resonators always join the neck at the 12 fret which is a real PIA when hitting high notes for affect. Add to that a cutaway and you'll never have to flip your hand over the neck again to reach high notes. It also plays much better than any old resonator (tend to have necks that feel like Stella's and none of the rattle hassles with those old paper thin resonators. Buy it!!Jim
I will use this on select songs in my solo gigs. Finger picking (country, folk, Americana, blue grass) I play 6 & 12 string guitar and banjo though an acoustic amp and this resonator plays great and has a very nice mellow tone both plugged in and unplugged. I'm very happy with it and would defend buy it again. I played semi pro back in the 60's and took a fifty year break as life happened but am back with a passion.Cask Ale Brewmaster

I was very impressed with the workmanship: he binding is flawless, the fret ends are dressed well and smooth, the satin finish is beautiful, and the action is good. This CBG ismade in China, it say this nowhere on this site or anywhere else. Many fret ends were unpolished and hurt the palm of my hand. The pickup system is weak and noisy. The neck contour and finger board is playable. The sound is fair for a resonator. The biggest problem is they put a thin veneer cover plate on the back to access the electronics, a disaster waiting to happen and the pictures did not show this. The cover plate is very thin and could crack easily or be pried over time by snagging on a shirt. The best part was the dealer shipped fast and readily accepted the return due to the condition of this CBG.Mark

It came setup to my liking. Keeps its tune – GDGB. I like the sound. I like the looks of the guitar. Its fun to play. I liked the price. Its not my Martin. I dont want it to be. The construction is marginal, the intonement is terrible, the cone and spider are junk, as are the strings. If you're a half-decent shade-tree luthier you can make it into a good resonator, but it requires a new cone and spider and nut and saddle and strings, routing out the rear of the cone shelf for proper intonement spacing, much filling in and smoothing and leveling of the cone shelf, shimming of the tailpiece, and maybe even a new cover plate. Mine now sounds really good, but the parts cost more than the original guitar and it required many hours of luthier work. All that not withstanding, still much less expensive that a comparable off-the-shelf properly setup high-end resonator.drrickt
this thing is the second one i bought on ebay, the first was the non cutaway model. loved it. but had to let it go. so i wanted another, and bought this one. it arrived today well packed and F A S T fast. the guitar is beautiful, no immediate flaws i saw, and was set up well for slide. the neck is straight no sharp fret edges, and the preamp is capable of some nice sound sculpting, 4 bands.. bass mid treb and presence… just what the doctor ordered. it's a nice round neck and the action is kinda high, but you want that for slide. sounds great accoustically or amplified. for 159.00, it is impossible to get a better deal anywhere. factor in the fast free shipping, and it's an unbeatable combo. you always wanted one of these, admit it… well, at this price, you can get one and if you don't like it, sell it for more than you paid for it. nicely made instrument for this price point for sure!phatjbp

I own several cigar box guitars – some I built – some I bought – usually fretted four strings that I mando tune. I wanted a three string for slide – I liked that this had a disk with a slide technique lesson. I was more than pleased – as an instrument, it's as good as most any CBG – they are all pretty crude at best. This one was easy to assemble – holds tune – sounds good acoustic or electric. There were some comments on it not using an actual cigar box, but a factory-made stylized resonator box. While this is true, it is at least as good as a cigar box, and I can understand why they broke that way for consistency and ease of build (which as I said, was super easy). Aesthetically, most people would probably prefer a real cigar box, but come on – it's like a uke – cheesy is part of the shtick. The lesson is good – play along CD and a book – comes with a good glass slide. I recommend it – worth the list price – all the better with the discounts.JoeFromSD
This is a great way to learn slide guitar. It is small & easy to learn. The book is full of great info. The CD is great, with back tracks, A tuning track so you do not need to buy a tuner, as long as you have something to play the CD in. It would be a good idea to buy a cheep tuner. As far as the price you just can't beat it. You can buy one for any wear from under $20.00 to $59.95. you just have to look around for a good price. Even at $30.00 to $ 40.00 is well worth it. The sound of the guitar very good and a small amp helps the sound but is not a must. Also you can take this any ware. In all this is a great product and was well thought out. I wanted a three string cigar box guitar and between a black friday discount and backstage pass points, I couldn't pass this up. Some reviewers complain that it's cardboard but domestic cigar boxes are predominantly cardboard. Also, Fender recently built a cardboard Strat that couldn't be told from a "real" Strat in a blind test. Build time was about ten minutes. I ran the strings around the tuners contrary to the directions so the string paths were straight. Sounds great acoustic and also great amplified. The only thing lacking is markers on the side of the neck. Maybe not sturdy enough for roughneck kids but a good introduction to the cigar box genre. Nice slide included.Mike

The workmanship of the Maxwell is as great as I expected! I'm just learning, or attempting to learn the dobro…I thinks it's perfect for the beginner and even the accomplished player as well. I added a Grover extension nut to raise the action (which is high to begin with) and am using it as a lap resonator. It is easier for me than the full size metal body square necks–I use a chair with a pillow next to me under the headstock to fully support the neck. It holds tuning quite well and the intonation is good. This is loud and gnarly–if you want smooth, this is not the instrument for you.Holly

I've built several of these diddley bow kits and they're historically authentic, with the exception of using a new guitar tuner instead of a bent nail or whittled tuner. A cigar box makes a great resonator and these diddley bows sound nice and loud. These kits are just a little more involved than the C. B. Gitty "Pure & Simple" kit (also sold on Musician's Friend: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/c.b.-gitty-cigar-box-pure-simple-3-string-slide-guitar-kit). You'll need to cut a hole for the neck to go in…but it's still a very easy instrument to build. Great for pedagogy. The guitar is played with a slide (provided) and is a great way to learn the slide guitar concept. Blind Willie Johnson started out on a one-string "diddley bow" cigar box guitar and used a pocketknife for a slide. He developed his unique slide style from learning songs on a single string. We now have 3 Sawtooth guitars. We are extremely pleased with all of them. We have an acoustic, electric, and now this beginner's electric guitar pack. Our youngest son won't put this guitar down. The black is a cool see through gloss. You can see the wood grain through the gloss finish. The guitar is of good quality. Much better than I thought it would be.The amp is portable, and can be used for headphones. Take note, that this is an amp that takes batteries (9 volt), or you can get an adapter for it. OK, I know I'm not being entirely realistic, but it's not going to get 5 stars unless the one I get shows up playing like the ones in the maker's demo videos. I've been playing and fixing instruments for 60 years, and so know well to expect any new-made one to need a little setup, and at this price maybe a lot. This one arrived with the neck a bit back-bowed, requiring a little truss-rod adjustment, and the frets needed leveling, re-crowning and their ragged ends smoothed, but that's all. The nut and bridge were fine right out of the box– including quite good intonation, which really surprised me. I've had several resonator guitars over the years, and even some otherwise very well-made ones have needed some serious tinkering to get the bridge in the right place! Yes, this is the same amazingly good-sounding instrument they show in those videos– POTENTIALLY! It's going to take some basic set-up work to get it there, and if you can't do it yourself, that will cost something. Add a hundred to it, though, and you'll still have a whole lot of instrument for the money– about 1/8 what a new National goes for. Of course the National is far superior, but IMO this RK (with a little tweaking) manages to get a lot closer than it has any right to. Recording King really knows where to cut corners, and where not to. This guitar has a 2-way truss rod, bone nut, spun cone, ebony-capped maple bridge saddle, and nice smooth-working Kluson-knockoff tuners. I was very happy to see that it has a removable bridge guard (which none of the online pictures of this model showed), and even happier that I haven't wanted to remove it yet. Oh, and it's good-looking, too. RK does a very nice job of design in the style of the mail-order instruments that came out of Kalamazoo back when, without making them literal copies. Mine's a lot darker than the pictures– In strong light, you can see the "Tobacco Sunburst" a bit, but it's pretty close to just black, which is fine with me. The fingerboard was sort of greyish and ashy-looking, which I didn't like so well, but Old English oil and 0000 steel wool darkened it up a bit and brought out the grain of the wood very nicely.Dan

After allowing the guitar few weeks to adjust and giving it a good set up including new strings and a neck adjustment (tightening the rod), Conditioning the fret board and a good polish, The guitar is easy to play and has great sound for an inexpensive guitar. I like the So Cal green color others may not as it is a vintage vibe. Tuners are price point but even price point tuners these days are decent. A little sticking from the nut, I think I can lightly file that out and add some nut sauce. The fret ends were not too sharp but I conditioned them to a nice smooth finish useing 500 grit sponge. Very little cost to make improvements and the guitar is fun to play. The sustain is probably the biggest suprise and I am satified to practice with this guitar every day. Very pleased for the cost. Guitar is ok for the price; however, I was expecting the strings to last longer than 2 days before breaking. Even the extra ones that came with the bundle broke as I was putting them on. I had to buy better ones and had a professional put them on to make sure they were adjusted correctly. Additionally, the small tuner's battery was dead out of the box so I had to get a new one. Again, I guess you get what you get for the price. On a positive note, the guitar looks nice, the small amps is super convenient, and everything arrived fast and together in one box.Luis L.
The guitar did not have the black scratch panel that is shown in the Sunburst guitar. Also, when my son opened the gift guitar, the black bag was covered in a white mold/mildew. It was delivered one week before his birthday and kept in a dry room, and opened for the first time on his birthday. The guitar seems ok, I will know more when someone with some guitar knowledge checks it out for me. It may be going back to the store. The pictures show exactly what the bag looked like minutes after the gift was opened. Looks rough, 2 stars are for the fact that the guitar was not moldy.Kacee

I added a Grover extension nut to raise the action (which is high to begin with) and am using it as a lap resonator. It is easier for me than the full size metal body square necks–I use a chair with a pillow next to me under the headstock to fully support the neck. Bought this guitar when it was on offer. It has a real oak neck. Comes with a cd , booklet , real glass slide. Great value.The body is made of board but the sound is really good.and you can even plug it into an amp. I am so pleased with mine as it's the first time I've got a tune out of a guitar as I am not very good with instruments. You play this guitar with the slide. You just have minimum work to put it together. It comes with the strings and clear instructions. When I bought mine it was cheaper on this site than anywhere else.
I gave this guitar to my Brother-in-Law for Christmas. After a few glasses of champers and much cajoling he agreed to get it out of the box and put it together with my Niece. What hilarity we had watching them, but even with some alcohol involved they assembled it with no problems, tuning it up as they went. Only a few hitches due to the fact they put one of the strings in the wrong position. A tune was soon being strung out and we all had a good laugh. He was made up with it and is looking forward to watching the DVD and becoming more knowledgeable to that style of playing. Money well spent for a lovely gift well received. 10/10
My wife bought me this as a Christmas present, just as a novelty item really (it was in a sale so she only paid 20). It's actually quite impressive for the price. The sound box is only cardboard, but it's reasonably tough, and it sounds pretty good really. It's fun to assemble, and the accompanying CD gets you started pretty easily. It has proper guitar strings, decent enough tuning pegs, and the electric pickup seems to work fine. Like all strings when new, you'll have to keep retuning them for the first few days until they stretch properly, but after that it seems to hold its tuning pretty well. I'd advise using a proper guitar tuner or a phone app to set it up – trying to do it from the tuning notes on the CD is quite hard. I've already had £20 worth of fun out of it, so this was a great buy.

Although the style and look of the guitar is amazing, along with all of the accessories, the biggest issue is the making of the guitar. The strings placement above the neck and along the guitar is too high up. It needs to sit parallel to the whole neck. It rises higher near the body and slowly lowers along the neck. Not a big issue if you know how to play the guitar, but for a beginner and for quality sound, the strings need to be hovering directly parallel along the whole guitar.Helaman H.
My granddaughter is 7yrs old. I wanted to do something different for Christmas this year, so I purchased a acoustic guitar. I’m thinking 30inches will be a nice size for her. When I received it the box was small and without taking it out the box I knew it wasn’t the size I thought it was going to be! I made the online purchased but I wanted to return it in store, which I did with the electronic receipt! APPARENTLY SOMETHING WENT WRONG! The GUITAR WAS SENT BACK TO ME! Not sure why there are so many 5 star reviews on this product, because it is not a good guitar. I bought it for my daughter to learn on and it will not stay in tune no matter what you do. I even tried changing the strings on it and it just refuses to stay in tune. I guess if you're just looking to get your kid used to holding a guitar and pressing the strings it is ok for that, but I would recommend spending a little more money on something decent that your kid can learn on. I am a guitar player and I have the full sized guitar from BCP and it is an excellent value for what you get, but this one just falls flat. No pun intended. 🙂Andrew
