1. Graph Tech Pq-5042-00 Tusq Nut 42mm Flat Bottom Guitar Nut
Product Details:

Reviews:
I put one of these on all of my builds. I tend to use cheaper Kmise necks for partscasters and they come with cheesy placeholder plastic nuts. Adding one of these will immediately increase your tuning stability. They all come a shade wide for the slot. Simply lay a sheet of 400 grit sandpaper on something flat and work the nut until it just fits. I don't even glue mine in — just let them float and they never move a micron under string tension. The slots are easy to carve, although I often don't need to.electraglide1911

Not an exact fit for your fender style neck, but with some modifications it is far better than the plastic nuts common on cheaper guitars. This is my 3rd Tusq nut that I have put on various guitars. Tusq nuts do what they advertise as far as helping to keep your guitar in tune. The string spacing is perfect and I have had to modify the string slots only when setting up a guitar for top-heavy strings.twinklin-2
I have had great experience with these. They are relatively easy to file and sand. I am always able to fit them perfectly to each guitar. The amazing part is how this small but mighty part can completely eliminate intonation problems. In many cases people over look the nut. Often strings hang up and release randomly causing a host of problems. These are high quality, and slippery so your stings glide over it. This company is great to deal with also. Do yourself a favor and get one.rico07

This is a great product. You will have to know, or learn how to fit it to your guitar properly but there are many videos on youtube on how to do this and it is not hard. (It took me about 30 minutes) I fit it to my strat copy and now when I use the tremelo, it comes right back to tune. I also have locking tuners and roller trees and this nut was the last part I needed to make it great. Just take your time, measure carefully and don't sand it down too low. Excellent product that does what it is supposed to do.pirate88179
Exactly what I needed, excellent quality and easy to sand down to fit my neck.STEVE
This guitar nuts do a good job. Sound good need very little work to set them up. A nice hard material.wipwot_adeioxll1

Reviews:
Bought this nut to replace the plastic nut on a customers import LP style guitar. The fit was perfect, and the XL size really lets you position the nut for proper string alignment (you can easily sand the ends for a custom fit). Before ordering, make sure you measure your old nut carefully comparing all dimensions and string spacing to make sure it will work on your guitar. This nut made a big improvement in the guitars tonal qualities and sustain, plus the permanent lubrication (Teflon) insures the strings will not bind or stick in the slot. In my opinion, this nut is an excellent upgrade for a guitar.light-lawre
The nut on my new Epiphone ES-335 was made of cheap, crumbly plastic. (The rest of the guitar was excellent.) So an upgrade was necessary. The Tusq online how-to video just happened to demo the installation process with an identical guitar, and that was helpful, but the video is excellent regardless of the guitar you own. After I had the nut properly sanded to fit, I did have to open and deepen the slot for the 6th string, as it was too narrow and the string didn't seat properly. The 5th, 4th, and 3rd strings slots were also just a little high compared to the 2nd and 1st, so I filed each of them just a bit (not much!). That's not a job for a beginner, so you may want to consult a luthier if you're not experienced in this sort of work. But the nut works as advertised. The tone is clearer, more complex, and just a bit brighter, compared to the stock nut. The strings don't bind in the slots, as the nut is self-lubricating, so tuning stability is also improved. Money well spent!Gordon the Pro
Fantastic value, i somehow ended with the low E string causing the end of my nut to chip off. This was on a factory Epiphone Les Paul Standard (2011) ebony guitar. I saw this product, and purchased it on a whim as a quick replacement. Installing it took 30 seconds, retuned the guitar, and no other jobs were needed. Fixed. Tone is improved 10-fold, it's very true that this increases harmonics/tone with the material it's made from, also noticed my strings stay in tune much much longer. Highly recommend. If you have a Epiphone Les Paul, this is a simple drop-in replacement for the nut. Shouldn't need any glue, sanding or fiddly adjusting. Or at least i didn't need to in my case.flytheflag77

Reservations first. My Strat Fretboard is curved, so why not supply a curved on the underside Nut, so before doing anything else filing doesnt have to be done. It was necessary to sandpaper off one face as well so the Nut fitted in the slot. Once the string slots had been widened and deepened slightly all was fine. Playing is very good. So all is good with this Nut.go4itbob
It is VERY hard to figure out from the online descriptions which nut will fit standard guitar models. Hint to manufacturers and retailers: be more specific with measurements and models. Anyway, I have a 2008 Road Worn Mexican Telecaster. I did not know if the original nut had a notch or not, but turned out it didn't, so I had to file this notch off the nut, pretty easy to do carefully. Very carefully tapped the old nut out from the side with a small round wood dowel. No need to glue new nut. It was a tighter fit than the original and I had to gently tap it in with a small rubber mallet. But I did not need to cut or sand anything. Result is the string intonation and tone problem I had is gone and the string vibrates freely and clearly. But the nut sticks out just a hair on either side of the neck, even though it said if fits Fender models…needs to be more specific. I am not filing it off as I want to keep the original rounded edge.NotARockStar
This is the first nut I've had to replace, and had no problem doing it. I bought this to replace a broken nut on a 90's Mexican made start. I don't know why the listing doesn't clearly say so, but I can confirm this is a 9.5 inch radius nut. The tab at the bottom is to make it useful for guitars whose nut cavity is either flat or radiused. If yours is radiused like mine, removing the tab just requires some filing and cleaning up with sand paper. Lay the sand paper on the fret board to make sure the bottom matches the same radius. It needed a little sanding to get it to fit inside the cavity, and some on the sides to remove the extra hanging off the sides. Now the guitar is good as new, and I didn't have to pay a professional to fix it.Luis

Bought this to replace a nut on a squier jazzmaster, where the spacing was off (both e strings too close to the edges of the fretboard – comparison photo below). I was really hoping for a stopgap until I could get a nut cut properly. That won't be necessary, with a bit of sanding, this is as perfect as any handmade nut, for a fraction of the cost and hassle of sending the guitar to a tech. It was fractionally thinner than the old nut, but with a tiny piece of card as a shim, it works perfectly. Guitar plays perfectly, high e string no longer falls off the fretboard at the slightest touch!Ben F.

Bought this to replace the nut on an early 50's ES-125 I inherited. The old nut had been unprofessionally replaced and string spacing was uneven and the depth of the string slots uneven as well. I do repairs and set-ups as a side job for a local shop. Took me all of about 30 minutes to have the height I wanted (there was ample material to work with), and another 4 or 5 to deepen the string slot appropriate to the gauge I use. The aged Tusq nut looks better than the original. Highly recommend for replacementsChuck
This nut fits a Les Paul Standard…I will vouch for that. Very easy material to work and so far I have noticed a marked improvement in tuning stability. I don't have a tremelo but I do bend the neck a bit and now I'm pulling it out of the case virtually still tuned from last show. I have had to make very very few tuning adjustments per show…it's quite remarkable. I wonder how such a seemingly soft material is going to hold up….will I be replacing this in a year?…2 years? Only time will tell for now it looks like a smart move.Tree
Buying online can make me have a tough bonding moment with a new guitar. For me it was my first gibson les paul, from AMS. I bought it and it sat in the corner for a while as I just didnt feel comfortable with it. There was no mojo! Finally, I had enough. I bought the tusq nut, cts pots, sprague vitamin q capacitors from ebay, and seymour duncan antiquities. Yesterday I put the new nut on lowered the tailpiece and wrapped the strings. Honestly, this guitar is super smooth! I also use big bend nut sauce from AMS and I just went all gilmour double bends for like 15 minutes and I'm in tune. The immediate effect for me after stringing the new nut was a resonance that reminds me of when I was a kid with an electric and no amp sitting in my bed room just jamming(headstock against the wall for amplification!). If you have no experience with repairs pay for someone to do it. I diy'd it but happen to have a japanese backsaw and new set of chisels, which I had to use. There's a YouTube video by graphtech where they just tap the nut out…totally oversimplified it my gibson nut was welded in there and in had to file it out. Fortunately there are videos for stubborn nuts. Also make sure when you install to set the height properly with feeler guages and sandpaper to take it down(go slow!). Anyway, it's a good product and I will look into more graphtech products if I need to in the future. Cheers!Patrick

Tunning stability is a dream with graphtech nuts.
This fitted perfectly on my Ibanez Amf73. I got it in hopes of it fixing my insane tuning issues (G string). I’m usually not handy with things like this, but removing the old nut and fitting the new one was way too easy! So far so good! The tuning has remained really stable so far. My only gripe is that the international postage is so damn much!Benjamin P.
10. Graph Tech Tusq Epiphone 1/4" Slotted Nut
Product Details:
The graph tech tusq slotted guitar nut is a direct replacement nut for epiphone guitars that have a nut slot width of ¼". if you have an acoustic or vintage guitar, you owe it to yourself to hear the difference a tusq guitar nut, saddle, and bridge pins make. compared to standard materials such as bone, micarta or corian, you'll hear more harmonics with every note you play when you use tusq on your guitar. the graph tech guitar nut is made from tusq, a proprietary material which is precision engineered under high pressure and heat. it is specifically formulated to deliver the right frequencies with the optimum transfer rate to the top of your guitar every time. because of the way tusq is made, it is a consistent material that is rich in tone and harmonic content. tusq has quickly become an important tone performance tool for some of the world's most renowned guitar manufacturers, luthiers and playing professionals. tusq nuts and saddles have rich tone and sustain, without the inconsistency found in ivory, bone and other natural materials. bone and ivory have hard and soft spots (grain) throughout each piece, hampering consistent transfer of vibrations to the guitar top. tusq guitar nuts, saddles and bridge pins are designed to transfer the right frequencies more efficiently from the string to the guitar body. acoustic guitars come alive. electric guitars will get a brighter sound and increased harmonic content.

I was trying to change the tone of my guitar. I went all in by getting a tusq nut, saddle, and bridge pins for my Washburn wd10sce. I think that the three new pieces did change the instruments tone a bit. Not a huge difference, but now a little louder and with a bit more ring and sustain. I did have to sand this nut some to get the proper action and fit, not a big problem, the tusq material sands easily. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself a guitar shop should be able to handle it without a problem.mcl
Used this to replace the plastic nut in an old (late 70s, made in Japan) Epiphone dreadnought. This is the first time I've tried this job and it was a little daunting. Din't help that the plastic nut was glued in with very strong glue. Followed all the online advice from StewMac etc, but the plastic nut broke and left pieces behind that had to be carefully filed out. However, the Graphtech nut was easy to sand into shape and fit. Now held in place with the tiniest dab of wood glue. Does make the guitar noticeably brighter and louder.frazermarr
So much easier to sand than Bone or Plastic Definitely worth the effort. The only time I say yes to plastic is if your going helping out some kid just starting out. After all,why spend $10.00 on some kid who will quit in two weeks when you can spend 99 cents. I will be forever GRATEFUL to a friend who introduced Graph Tech Nuts and Graph Tech Saddles They really make a difference ! I can assure you I am not being paid a Nickel to say this To install a saddle does not require much knowledge but to replace a Nut requires a little but it is definitely worth your while to take it to your local Music store, if you don't know what you're doing Before I knew how to do it I actually had some clerk tell me "Yeah well if you have extra hair in you ears you might appreciate the difference" And this was for a low budget Ibanez I had at the time. Trust me, I've played for friends that love music but can't tell the difference between an A# and a D natural and even if I'm playing an inexpensive Guitar with Graph Tech nuts and saddles, Usally the first thing they say after the first song is "Hey that's a nice Guitar what kind is it ?" they don't believe me when I explain I am playing an inexpensive make and the Nut and saddle make the difference. of course the current one I ordered is for my Epiphone Texan which I am happy to say that even though I ordered with the bargain rate shipping, I received it just four business days after I ordered it. Thank you so much Musician's Friend. My only gripe is that I didn't know what size I needed for the Epiphone Texan. Had I known that, I would've got free shipping with the Guitar. But Hey, for $3.50 shipping what's there really to complain about ?

Bought this to replace the broken nut on my old yamaha acoustic. It fit perfectly without any sanding necessary. I actually would have liked it to be just a hair taller. The guitar sounded good and the intonation was perfect. I don't know if it improved the sound as I hadn't played it in 2 years.DK
Other than the XL version, these are the best out there. Replaced nut, saddle and bridge pins on a 1999 Tacoma DR20E. The original nut & saddle were TUSQ as well, but bridge pins were plastic. Like any nut, this will require a process of shaping and fine tuning to get the fit and action perfect. However, having good 200 and 400 grit sandpaper and nice nut files, and a peg winder will make it easier. Be sure and file down the area on the peg board / fret board joint to remove all the old glue and get it smooth. I sanded the bottom until the strings were in the 0.025" range (an action gauge or feeler gauges are necessary), then worked on the slots w/ my nut files to get the action around 0.020" on high E, grading to 0.022" on low E. Strings will not bind on this nut.Marcel

I don't know what else to say except it fit perfect without any sanding or shaping or anything.lbbird434
I wasn't happy with the original nut on my PRS 24 SE Standard as it was just a basic plastic material, and was slotted to take only .009 gauge strings, and I prefer to use .010's. The Graph Tech was a perfect fit for my guitar and the string spacing was exactly right. The only adjustment I had to make was to sand down the base of the nut a bit, as the strings were sitting a bit high when setting the nut in place. The guitar now not only looks better, plays better, but also sounds better than it did beforehand. I am entirely happy with this product, and would highly recommend it to any prospective buyers.buckdau

Didn't have one in stock at either of the two local stores Omaha and Lincoln so ordered off the website. It wasn't the same size as the one I took off and expected. Too tall and too thick. Had to do a lot of sanding to make it fit. Disappointed as I just wanted a direct replacement.Vernon
Overall I've been very happy with Tusq products. I always use the pre-slotted ones. When I compared this nut (1 3/4") next to the old one, the string spacing was definitely more narrow than the stock one that was removed. I played it for a couple of weeks and couldn't get used to it. I ended up getting a 1 13/16" nut and sanding down the edges.10nhm69

Reviews:
In terms of tone, the Tusk XL is a dramatic improvement over a plastic OEM nut. I am amazed at the tonal/response difference. If you have upgraded the pickups/electronics in your guitar, swapping out the plastic nut with a tusk will raise the bar overall on the tone of your instrument and you will really hear those upgrades. A black PT 6642 XL nut, though, appears to be the closest fit to an Ibanez SA series electric nut replacement. The PT6642 is the perfect length and string spacing. It is, though, a few .0 MM too narrow and too short, but can work well with a shim of .040mm. If you order a nut that is a touch higher, the options available get even more narrow and the string spacing too wide. If you search for a nut with a width you could sand to fit, the height drops significantly in the options available, and you are seriously pushing the strings too wide on the board. So, I made a shim: it looks great and the upgrade in tone is more than worth that extra effort.Jim L.

Requires a slight offset towards bridge. About 80 thousands of an inch on my strat. Thought I'd try this out on my Floyd equipped guitar instead of a locking nut. It does actually stay in tune well with moderate use of the wammy bar. Recommend using a couple of roller string trees as well. Nice addition if, like me, you don't like having to loosen the nut clamping screws to get more adjustment dialed into the Floyd bridge fine tuning adjustment screws.wayne451
The Fender LSR Roller nut is a great piece of gear ( yes, gear) for any guitar with a trem system. A long time ago when I was working in a little guitar shop in Venice, CA a fairly well known player of the time told me he always soldered the ball end of his strings whenever he put a new set of strings on his guitar. He said it helped keep is guitar in tune because the ball end is where most of the stretching occurs. So I took him up on his idea and it works great!. I'll put a set of locking tuners (my preference are Sperzels, they're a great company to do business with and they are all American Made) on, too. I've been soldering my strings at the ball end for years now. And with locking tuners and the help of the LSR Nut I have a great locking trem system that needs very little maintenance or repair.clean1too
I just installed this on a Fender Showmaster. Same first as a Strat. Not too bad too install if you plan it out and take your time. The sizes of drill bit and philips driver are critical as noted in instructions. Came out great for me, but unless you have a lot of patience, I'd recommend a luthier installing it. As far as performance, I noticed the problem string I always had with knocking out of tune (G) was only slightly improved. Could be other setup issues that I'll have to look into, but overall I think I had the bridge set up fairly well. Looks pretty spiffy on the guitar though!corvettenlc

Overall: This is my first set of “true” nut files. I’ve used needle files, welding tip cleaners, a fingernail file and other things in the past. Sometimes those cheap things worked but most of the time they fell far short, especially when working on a bone nut. This set from music nomad are easy to use and do the job quickly and efficiently.

and replace them with a great new Tusq artificial ivory nut. Plays excellent and transmits tone very well (you can tell the difference if you drop the old one and this one on a hard surface.) It also files down very easily to fit your size neck, and with the raised ridge will fit both curved and flat nut slots. This is also great for converting an inexpensive Affinity strat to standard Strat string spacing so that your fingers can get on the strings better. An amazing improvement.edge12x2

I had a nagging buzz from the "B" string that I could not track down along with what seemed a misalignment of the high "E" being really close to the edge of the fretboard. I had seen positive comments about Graphtech's TUSQ so I wanted to give it a try. I installed it the weekend after it arrived. Took several trial and error attempts at getting the nut sanded properly to get a tight fit and correct height but once done it was worth it. Solved both problems and tuning seems to be better. Will likely do the same for my Gretsch to help with tuning changes from Bigsby.Gregg G.
Out of the box, my guitar no longer sticks at the nut when tuning. Open strings sound, well, good. I'm not a bone fanatic so I can't say whether it's significantly different from bone or other high quality materials, but it seems good. Exactly conforms to its specified dimensions, which means it's an exact friction fit,"drop in and add a drop of white glue" for my guitar (with a flat-bottom nut). Spacing is also exactly as specified. Seems quite hard when filing, although the A cut much faster than the others, and I don't yet know whether I just have one extra fast file or the material is slightly inconsistent, but file carefully. And yes I'm now waiting on a replacement. But it's a nice hard material, doesn't bind, and I have ordered another of the same, so there you go.tekhedd2006

I have used many different branded nut files over the years and I have to say these are in my top 2 of all time. Besides the affordable price, the handles fit nicely in your hand, they cut cleanly and accurately, and come with a great storage case.. I Used these files to cut several nuts and they all came out excellent. I would highly recommend these nut files for beginners, hobbyists, and professionals.Tom
Overall: I had never filed a nut before. I was building a partscaster and needed to learn lol. I wanted something decent quality but I didn't want to pay SM prices, and the stuff at the online shopping extravaganza named after a major rainforest is all cheap garbage. I have used other Music Nomad products and liked them so went for this set of files. They are built pretty well and they seem to have taken into account many of the shortcomings of some of the other cheaper files. The file part itself is only a couple inches long. That way it won't bend when you are using it causing too wide of a slot and also won't drift down and accidently cut the first fret. The housing is small enough to easily use but still have a good grip. They come with a nice little box to put them in as well. I don't know what someone who does this for a living would think of these, but for an average player who needs a decent set of nut files I think these fit the bill quite nicely.Allan
