great strings. they really last close to forever without getting that "rubbery" feel or sound with age. having used both pick techniques and finger plucking, these strings stand the test of time and durability. my first set i bought in november and lasted until june. im on my second set right now and they are still going strong. i know it seems unnatural to last this long but they do without any sound or feel difference over time. when i put on my second set of these my bass sounded exactly the same as the first. whether you use a pick or pluck, the paint still comes off where you pluck but its not noticeable unless you're up close. and these sound great from drop D to drop B tuning (since my band switched tuning). very very good buy!JohnTFF
The coating is very poor on the string that I received. I don't care for them and I didn't get what I thought I was ordering. I thought that I was getting coated strings that is easy on your fingers and don't make the sliding sound when moving up and down the strings. These strings are very poor quality.
I haven't used these yet, but with 6 basses, it's coming. I Have used DR Black strings, and like them. Your heart can feel the bass, but clear enough to cut through. I wipe with alcohol, and they keep it awhile. Using a set now, over a year, still good. Use DR, feel the sound. BennyBbenny501

I just received these today (3-8-13, not from musicians friend) and was very excited about them. I play in a heavy metal band that tunes to CDCF and my ernie ball super slinky 45s weren't cutting it, so I ordered these. I started putting them on and the tone was great. Once I put on the 4th string (C), it was just about tuned and it snapped. Maybe this was a fluke, but for someone that plays shows, this is completely unacceptable. To have a string designed for low tuning, not be able to tune to C is just ridiculous. No way these would tune any higher. I would avoid these. I ordered Ernie Ball power slinky 55s (same gauge as these DDTs)Cbass419
Sound: great sound. these strings are pretty bright sounding which is what i like, they almost sound like stainless strings, i dont know if they are but in drop c they sound very clear. Features: seem to have a small outer winding so that they are smoother than more rugged strings. Ease of Use: these strings are just like they say super stable so you can drop your action and play fast. Quality: the only problem i have with these strings is that the E string broke on me at the saddle of the bridge. it might have just been a lemon or something but i was in drop C so it didnt have hard tension on it and shouldnt have broken even with heavy picking. this was about two weeks after they were strung up. Value: these strings are expensive but then again theyre hand made so. . .
Really recommend these strings my bass has that twang I've been searching for but without taking anything from the deep basses sounds you want from your bass. When you are stuck in a groove these strings give you so many options to play around with sounds. I bought them for C standard tuning but I've been so happen with them I have learnt half my set list to suit these strings now just for an excuse to use them more. I love Ibanez and this mikro is no exception, but I only but it for fun. Although it could get great sound, not quality, but again I got it just to mess around and for the price I got a bargain. If you have small hand or are interested in learning is great, but I would recommend a good amp so you get a great sound. Don't buy a cheap amp please! Overall you will love it. As someone who regularly plays live shows, these strings are my absolute favorite. Super light and easy to bend, and yet not floppy; they produce no unwarranted fret buzz even at extremely low string heights. That being said, they also manage to maintain bright and exciting treble without sacrificing anything significant in the low frequencies. As always, Rotosound has produced a very piano-like set of strings. One of my favorite playing styles is slap bass (incorporating a lot of the Victor Wooten "double thumb"), and these strings make everything easier. I had used Rotosound strings in the past. Flat wound, and did not like them. Just did not care for flat wound strings. I had been using Ernie Ball Slinky but was not really happy with them either. They were hard on the fingers (sharp) and thin sounding I was not getting the "beef" in my sound. I did a nice cleaning of my fretboard and installed the roto bass RB 45's The E string was a bit fatter than I was used to but still very comfortable. The strings were smooth (for round wound) and I was most pleased with the fatter tone overall. Tight clean and no buzz. I believe I will be using these for all future restrings. One minor CON was that for strings marked for long scale the D string was a bit close in length. But that said my Bass, an 80's model Washburn force 4 is a very big and long bass.vicmanjim

These strings lasted me a good 3 years throughout my college Jazz ensemble class. Never had the need to change them, they still retain its tone after 3 years!! and honestly Im okay with that cause over the years as they grow old the better it sounds than fresh out the pack. Although I do have to warn that these strings will feel a bit grabby once theyre set and if you have hairy arms/forearms enjoy the strings pulling your arm hairs. I purchased these as spares because the price was too good to pass up. I have these on an Ibanez with a stupidly thin neck. These super light gauge are the only flats that don't warp the neck and trash the fretting. Took my bass and strings to my local guitar tech for stringing and set up. The D string broke even before it was up to pitch. The tech in the shop contacted the manufactures who sent out a replacement string this subsequently broke. Guitar tech contacted manufactures again they sent another replacement this also broke. All the strings broke in different places and before they were up to pitch. Could be a rogue batch. I suggested we try another make (diaddario's) and they didn't break. I will not be purchase cobalt strings again flat wound or otherwise. If you like gambling go ahead and purchase away. Not a good experience.4201willow
Not sure how some of these other guys are breaking strings unless they are tuning them to an unsafe tension. I use these due to the higher tension; they work better for tuning down for doom/stoner metal. I've filed the nut on my bass to accommodate these higher gauge strings and the tight fit has caused some crimping but the string still haven't broken in several weeks of playing so I'd say they are pretty durable. They sound great and are really easy on the fingers. I spent a whole day recording with them and only started to develop a slight blister on one of the fingers of my fretting hand near the end of the night due to a repetitive riff. My plucking hand didn't experience any discomfort. I wish there was another gauge up though. I tune my E string down to B or C and even the 110 gauge string leaves it a little looser than I'd like. 115 would probably suit me perfectly. My only complain is the thread near the ball ends is pretty thick and I had to shave a good amount of it off to allow the E and A strings to fit through the bridge on my Rickenbacker 4003. Depending on the model of your bass, you may experience the same problem.Brett

I once used D'Addarios for practice and gigs, then tried the Ernie Ball kind: these have a deeper bottom while having a comparable midrange presence. They're great for rock and roll gigs. The highs have a nice snap to them. Nickel strings are easier on the fingertips than stainless steel, plus the Slinkys last longer than Rotosounds. They had been laying around a couple of weeks and I no longer had the receipt so I didn't even try to return the opened package. I'm a gigging bassist who usually prefers roundwounds. I have them on all of my basses, including a 4-string fretless. We rehearse at 3 or more times a week, and I practice about 2 hours a day on technique and music theory/improvisation. As would be expected, at some point my fingers shout "STOP!" I recently strung these on my J-bass (which is my go-to baby) and I have to tell you that there is NO appreciable difference–other than price LOL!–between the sound of these and well-known roundwounds. In fact, I replaced a set of nice Rotosound 66's–my favorite for roundwounds–with these and, shut the front door Beethoven, I actually PREFER this sound of these Slinky flatwounds. Nice, lightweight strings with a good feel and excellent durability. The Slinky series give a great bright sound to the player, which is great for overall sound of the instrument. This lighter gauge I recommend for some of my beginner and/or younger students, especially while developing grip and finger strength. Postage from Artist was of course, super fast. Service is generally excellent, and while I have had some issues with their own brand products in the past, they've always played straight and fairly.

Initially received defective product (G string was dead). DR sent a replacement quickly. First impression was these strings were mid-heavy, not my style at all. Unfortunately, I do not have a 7-string axe but if I did, it would be strung out with these babies! I buy them for the 28, 38 & 58 strings for my SRV Strat to get that Texas tone. They play just as smooth & good as any of the other Ernie Ball strings I use. I love the heavy, warm-end tone & the strings do not disappoint AND they're easy on the fingers meaning they're smooth. If you bend strings up a whole step like I do, these strings will toughen you up real fast.. These strings last and never have I experienced any corrosion. I was looking for a perfect set to stay super tight in Eb but also retain enough tension in lower tunings. I had been using the Not Even Slinky set and found the higher strings for be a little too thick and the lower a little too thin. So, I decided to give these a shot. I remove the .28 (Normally the 4th string) and that way, I have regular 11s at the top but super heavy strings at the bottom. When tuned to my signature Eb, they retain a lot of tension and are good for a nice chugging sound. When tuned any lower than Drop C, they start to lose a little tension, but still stay manageable. I'd say the lowest comfortable tuning is Drop A before they get too floppy. Overall great strings, EB is the best!Ryan
Ernie Ball Strings are great. They have a lovely "twang" to them when brand new. However, I DO like their Paradigm Strings the most, as they last for 6 months or more before I need to change them. Those Ernie Ball Paradigm Strings are the best, longest lasting strings that I have ever used. I wish Artist Guitars stocked the EB Paradigms (I'd have given a 5* Rating instead of 4* if they had Paradigm Strings). If/when they DO start to stock them and if their price is right, I'll purchase them for ALL my 7 or 8 guitars! ATM I usually purchase 3-pack deals via e-Bay. 😀 I only got these as I wanted a brand new set of 7-String Guitar Strings for my brand new and 1st ever 7 String guitar, the Artist Guitars' Spiritus 7 that I purchased recently. However, I am going to purchase Paradigm 7-String sets from now on. These non-paradigms are just temporary. I'll be purchasing another Acoustic Guitar or few in the future also, as I'd like a JB300NT V2 Steel String Acoustic as well as a new Nylon Classical Guitar. And I need a Bass or 2 also. The search is over. I've tried Ernie Ball, Chromes, and Thomastik and each and every one of these had aspects that I did not like. Either there was too much brightness, little balance, too much mids, bad feel of the strings, or overall tone that did not hit the sweet spot. Mind you those are also quality strings, but they do not shine like these Fender 55's. The search is simply over. The balance is just there. You don't have overwhelming frequency peaks with these strings because they sound even across the spectrum. Ernie Ball is sticky feeling and too bright for my style (which is amazing for some people, Im very impressed with Ernie Ball as well it just doesnt suite my style, these are almost tied with Fender), Chromes are peaky in the mids, and Thomastiks are too flabby and 'tubby' sounding. This is my top recommendation for strings and I think roundwound players should give them a shot.Bass hobbyist
These are long scale pure nickel round wound strings. They sound great; warm, mellow, but still well defined. Very old school. I use them on all my basses; long (34) and short (30.5) scale. The only caveat for using them on short scale basses, is that the larger diameter (low E) may not fit in the center hole of the tuning peg. In that case, just be sure to leave enough of the smaller diameter "core" to fit into the center hole, then wind the rest around the peg. Okay, I am a new player and this is my first set of flat wounds. I was wanting to try flat wound strings for a while.I was curious about how they would sound and play. I know professional players who have shared their recommendations with me, and read review from other players on sites such as "Talk Bass". The price was right so I took a shot. I play a Squier Jazz 4 string, and an Ibanez 305 5 string in our band Soylent Dream. When I got my flats I had to wait a couple of days to put them on my Squier. I was too busy playing to change and break 'em in. What I liked when I took them out was that the ends had different colors on them to make them fool proof to put on. The green silk ends were in pretty good shape. When I put them on my 4 string Squier, I was instantly blown away. If you've never played flats before, it's different. The string feel like silk thread under your fingers. The tone and shape of the sound is warmer and richer. Some round wounds feel a little too bright and almost pitchy and cold. This is different. There was no deadening or flatting out in the mids and highs that I thought there might be. I found they were still very crisp. The set I ordered was 105 to 50 and they are stiffer then a round wound. But after a little playing and getting them broken in they hold tune and can be bent and hammered pretty hard. When you first play them you have to get used to how easily your fingers slide, and you can hit on the fret wire and miss your notes getting a buzz. They can take a beating. I am a finger style player, not a picker. The style of music I play is heavy psychedelic rock. Though I am influenced by guys like Steve Harris and Geezer Butler, but am also a big fan of 70's soul and reggae so BB Dickerson and "Family Man" Barret are huge influences too. For me these flats are amazing. The sound fits my style of playing and I have to say, I want to try these on my 5 string.

These are installed on a Gretsch short scale. They have a great smooth feel, tension with balanced volume and warm sound. They don't rattle with loose tension like most shortscale strings. I'm just sorry I didn't try the Rotosound Trubass decades ago. I finally ordered them from Strings and Beyond and l will be ordering more for my other basses. As far as Rotosounds claim to emulate an upright l will say they give you a rich warm sound usable in a lot of musical styles. When installing these strings you may have to widen the nut slots so the strings will not bind and allow them to sit correctly. Very, very comfortable strings to play. I have only had these strings on for about a week, so I cannot attest to their longevity. However, right out of the package, they have had an excellent upright like tone that is perfect for the types of roots music I like to play. I like to play with a slightly high action and these strings seem to be made for that. I have not experienced any of the hum sometimes associated with tapewound strings. My pickups are kind of bright, and these strings helped balance my tone with their darkness. Overall, I am very satisfied and would recommend them to anyone who likes to play country/blues/americana type music.Kris
This is my second set of Monel flats, but my first encounter with their short-scale set. I put them on my EB-0. As others have mentioned (and maybe this doesn't apply to your bass), the silk wrapping at the knob end extends over the place the string touches the bridge. It requires scraping part of the silk away so you can get a metal-touching metal. Again, this may not matter to you; the EB-0, however, produces a mellow tone already and anything that softens that tone (like the wrapping) makes it more difficult to tease even a little crunch out of the instrument. Not a big deal, but an unnecessary step for me to have to do this when it would be a simple matter to use less silk at the factory and give us ready to use strings out of the bag. Other than that, I like Monel strings — they are strong and reliable — and would buy them again to put on a standard scale bass.Offhis Rocker

I bought these strings on a whim for an Ibinez SR405, and never regretted it. I get the full range of authoritative tone I get from any other strings (better than many, and much better than some). For the price of a set of strings, I get a set of strings and free stage presence. My best friend and guitar player, who despises flashy gimmicks, had to admit they sounded good. The only possible downside is that the brightness of the strings can make it difficult to see fret markers, so leave yourself some adjustment time between putting these strings on your bass, and doing any gigs with them. Oh, and the coating will come off, so just be careful when you are threading them through your bridge, and know to expect it if you use a metal pick.CJ
These strings perform perfectly for me at a half step down with a comfortable, not too lose, feel. The glowing is admittedly much better with a blacklight but they are super bright under normal stage lights too. As always they stay in tune incredibly well but Ive come to expect that from the folks at DR. I bought these for my Dean Z because I have used DR strings forever and thought i would be safe with the glowing jewels. Boy was I Right! The coating is super comfortable if just a little weird feeling at first. Initialy I felt that they would be slow feeling until I got em on and they proved just as fast and responsive as a non coated string. The best points about these strings is that they have a very crisp punchy tone without sounding dull at all, and underneath the coating lies a genuine handmade DR string! They warn that care must be taken when stringing through the bridge so as not to scrape off the coating, and while i did feel this was possible I had no problem running through the bridge on my bass which is similar to a standard P-bass bridge. I suppose that this would be most basses however my others have a different type of bridge where this is no issue at all. The only reason I dont give em a 10 is because the warning bothered me for about 5 minutes, which never happened with any other DR strings. These Neon strings are a super value because they give you a fantastic tone that is sure to last a long long time, and they friggin glow! normally I would expect something like this to be a gimmick but was surprised to find that they are really awesome strings with the bonus of looking killer on stage.
I have these orange strings on my 5-string metallic navy blue Ibanez Soundgear, and the contrast of the bright orange against the the dark blue is visually stunning. I've received a lot of compliments, questions, and "concerns" about the appearance of the strings. This is something different and flashy that you can do for your bass to add a bit of flare, and it will draw attention. I've heard everything from, "That looks so cool!" to, "What possessed you to do that?" 🙂 I like the appearance, the tone is good, and that is what matters. The strings work as advertised – black light reactive. I don't move around on stage that much, so these strings added stage presence to my performance because they glow under the black lights. Typical round wound string tone. Since the strings are coated, they will last longer than non-coated strings, so use these for practice, rehearsal, performance, jams, etc. I like the strings a lot, and I want to experiment with the different colors that are available.groovydaddy
