I bought this as a Stupid Deal of the Day. I wasn't expecting great quality — just a serviceable instrument. Alas, even there I was disappointed. There were minor annoyances like absolutely no documentation — no manual in the box; no manual on-line; nothing. I still don't know what the little allen wrench that came with it is for. When I picked up one of the legs it fell apart. There is a press-to-fit collar that holds the screw which allows adjusting the length of the leg. It wasn't actually pressed onto the shaft it was supposed to be attached to. A little brute force (before I attached the leg) solved that one. The real problem, however, came when I managed to assemble it anyway in spite of these minor glitches. Within moments of me setting it up on it's legs, one of the legs fell off. Actually the metal plate into which the leg screwed fell off. Luckily I still had all the packing material because I hadn't actually managed to completely unpack it. I called Musicians Friend. They were very helpful and immediately sent a RMA and a return label. Back it went.Bill, W.
Excellent product, I found it to hold tune and appears fairly sturdy. Strings are adequate for practice will experiment with others later, but not bad. I ran this through my Fender Deluxe reverb and found very little hum. Practically none and this surprised me as it is a single coil pickup. My only grip is the legs, I could not even get them to screw in, but then I didn't plan to use them in the first place, this instrument is best in your lap. The legs will come in handy if there is a noisy cat in the alley, or I need something to sink a boat (they are fairly heavy and seem decent, except, they are impossible to screw into the dang guitar!) Overall I would highly recommend as a first lap steel for sure.Mike
I've played electric/acoustic/bass for over 25 years, but got curious to try a lap steel because I've always loved the sound; I know what a quality instrument should feel like, and this definitely met or exceeded my expectations. I tuned up to C6 easily, and the single-coil pickup gives a nice bright tone that is consistent in volume from string-to-string. I haven't noticed any hum from the pickup at normal practice volume, and no grounding problems. I expect I'll change the strings soon, but that's a personal preference. A few people mentioned tuning problems; the tuners aren't the best, but I'd suggest pulling on each string when you first get it, to get any extra slack out of them. After that, mine holds tune perfectly fine. It packs up really neatly in the included gig bag, which does hold the detachable legs as well. The gig bag doesn't have much padding, but should be perfectly fine for storing the guitar when not in use. If you need to gig with the instrument professionally, I'd suggest getting something more solid, but this is a fantastic option for someone looking to learn on, or for studio use where you're looking for some different tones.Sam A

Bought this for my wife as a second lap steel. I have bought the Recording King products before. This unit was not set up. The strings were floppy loose, that is okay as I restrung it. While putting new strings on I noticed the tuning machine were loose. All of the screws were stripped out and would not tighten. Started to send it back and decided to repair if and was successful. If we had not wanted to use it immediately, it would have gone back. Overall we like it and will continue to shop Musicians Friend.GWF

After waiting seven days for this instrument, and having been very pleased with the Recording King banjo I'd received from another online retailer-since MF is still out of stock on that item- I was excited about the impending arrival. After retrieving the instrument from where the UPS driver left it in the 100 degree sun without calling me (I was home) to pick it up (or even honking), I unpacked the hot box, tuned up the steel, plugged it in and…NOTHING!! Without a doubt, this instrument is on par with the most expensive jazz guitars I have ever picked up in 45 years. The workmanship, detail, and component quality are right up there with the best. I did change the strings to LaBella Flats because I like flat-wounds on jazz instruments rather than the round-wounds. The action was perfectly set at 5/64th on delivery. I readjusted the bridge for a flat intonation of the high E, but that's it. I have the HB model (humbuckers) because I prefer them to P90's both sonically and cosmetically. The humbuckers are wide response with excellent output level. The only things you might object to is 1) the matte finish if you prefer glossy, and 2) lack of individual Volume/Tone controls for each pickup – but the feel, sound, and action match the best. I am a Godin fan for life! What a great value.bbqbob
I have been using this guitar for 3 weeks now. Beautiful instrument, it really stands out from the crowded guitar market with its unique design. I do not see any technical or presentation flaw on the instrument. The neck is very comfortable to play up to the 12th fret. Beyond this, the continuous play is not terribly comfortable due to the size of the body (I always had solid body guitar in the past). But that is fine for jazz. The sound is great! when it is unplugged, it has a beautiful resonance and tone (especially with flat-wound strings). Furthermore, due to the strings beyond the bridge, there is great sustain and overtones. Maybe even a bit too much. When the guitar is plugged in, it has a beautiful rich tone. I had a gig with a jazz quartet when I played in front of the amp, and there was no feedback at all. The mini-humbucker pickup is a little quiet compared to my other guitar that has Seymour Duncan active pickups, but that is ok. I just need to turn the volume a bit more up. The guitar is super light weight! It is nothing compared to my mahogany solid body guitar. This is again a great feature when you have to stand for long during a gig. The body size is not too large, not too small, very comfortable to play for longer periods. The case is similarly superb: lightweight and really solid construction. The only problem is that it does not fit in the boot of my car anymore (Mazda 3).. Overall, great guitar, fully recommend it. In terms of delivery, the only issue was that it was not stated upfront that the guitar has to be ordered from Canada. My impression was that it was available in the store already, but after ordering, it turned out that there was a waiting time. It was not bad, I have received the guitar in 2 weeks (including professional setup). It could have been worse. Apart from this communication issue, Richard was really supportive and set the guitar up without a flaw. Everything went really smoothly, though I was really itchy during the waiting time to finally receive this great guitar.Attila L.
This is a very nice guitar. The only thing I did to it was lower the action and change the strings to flatwounds. Because it does not have a heavy lacquer finish the tone really comes through. It is not fancy, but the wood is beautiful. The humbucker pickups are very clear and the tone knob changes the tone without muting the sound. Only one volume and one tone controls, so not lot of choices. At this price point this guitar is a great value. I really hated the TRIC case that comes with this guitar. It is made from Styrofoam with stretch canvas over it. It has cheap plastic hinges and the zippers don't always want to work. The handle is to tight and hard to get your hand around and the Velcro will not stay together. It is very large and bulky. It has backpack straps on the back side, but is too large to carry on your back. I don't know what they were thinking when they design this thing. I pull out my guitars and found that an Epiphone Emperor hardshell case (SKU 540810) will fit it perfect. In the TRIC case the guitar would move around, but in the Epiphone case it stays put. (See picture). I just put a Made in Canada sticker over the Epiphone logo and you would not know that in did not come in this case. 5 stars for the guitar and 1 star for the TRIC case. 🙂DonV

I love this guitar. Pictures don't do the color justice. If I'm being picky, I would say that fretwork is a little rough, but only a little. Biggest gripe is the lack of a case. At this price point, it is a little crazy to not get one. Bought a Reverend Manta Ray HB in 2016 for 800$ case included. Other than those small gripes, great experience.
Is now my second string or first string instrument. Haven't decided yet. Main axe now is PRS Johnny Hiland signature. This might be the new first string for one third the MSRP of the PRS. Took about two weeks of tweaking when switched from tens to nines. Every time I tweaked, I got away with more than I thought I could and now it plays like butter. Always stays in tune!Lars
been plkaying for 25 years and this guitar along with the Jetstream 390 are the 2 best guitars I own and I absolutelky love playing them. Thet are nothing short of fantastic and I love them. Best guitars I ever bought or played. They are ib a class all their own. I'v owned about every brand and tgypoe and never found anything that comes close to this and the Jetstream 390. I'm also a dobro player. Had issues with getting the dobro loud enough for church praise band without feedback so I bought the Asher lap steel. Same scale length and string spacing as dobro and came with strings suitable for dobro tuning, Perfect fit. The tone is great with the neck pickup and neck/bridge pickups on but to my ears the bridge pickup alone is very thin and tinny sounding. Quality control issues: First thing I noticed right out of the box was that two of the tuner buttons rattled when I played it. Should be an easy fix by tightening the screws on the tuner buttons but these don't have any at all. Not sure how the buttons actually stay on. Anyway I used a little super glue on the two rattlers and that fixed the problem. I'll probably upgrade the tuners at some point but for $900+ after taxes I shouldn't have to. Also the plate around the output jack was loose and I had to tighten that up. No big deal but still…. Re stringing is a puzzler with the wrap around bridge. On the lower strings the ball end of the string wedges up against the plastic ring around the pickup making them difficult to change. There suggestion is to take the provided allen wrench and rais the bridge to make the strings easier to remove. Really? Raise and lower the bridge everytime you re string? Why not move the bridge pickup 1/8 up away from the bridge? It certainly isn't going to hurt the bridge pickup tone any…. Anyway, it is a good instrument that I plan on keeping forever, just keep in mind that it won't be perfect. Oh, the gig bag is very nice. Sturdy and nicely padded.cb56
Honestly… This instrument is very nice for someone learning to play lap steel. Drop the conservative amount now and as time prevails upgrades can be made to make this guitar road worthy. The tuners are cheap and are not going to withstand someone who is gigging. And of course… The pickups aren't going to give you that HOT sound most desire. These are an easy fix and you will be left with a great steel that will withstand many great performances. I would highly recommend the Junior to anyone that is still developing technique and style. I bought this steel because friends decided to play Dark Side Of The Moon in it's entirety. I got to play all of the overdub parts and lap steel is featured on 2 songs. Fortunately for everybody David Gilmour's steel parts are simple to play. I took it right out of the box to rehearsal and was pleased as punch with the tone. It looks sharp, too. Pickguard looks perloid in the picture and solid white is what I got. Upper neck has NO pickup selection. I know because I took it apart and all 3 upper pickups are wired directly to the output!! The knob in the middle, should be a blend pot that allows one to have one, both or adjust volume between the 2 necks. What the factory did was McGeyver a regular volume pot to try to do the same thing that kinda works, but not very well. 6 string neck on the on I recieved was very unstable! If you push one way or another, you can hear it go out of tune. 12 string neck is actually a little better, but the string break angle at the nut is ridiculous and pulls at the nut. I had to glue the nut in place (should have been done at the factory) to keep the strings in their proper place. Now I know at this price point for this type of guitar, you might have to put some work in, but some basic stuff should be ok from the jump and quality control sucks. I am a tinkerer and 40 year guitar player. So I know some things and know how to fix stuff. Good Luck if you get one of these that is playable out the box!!Rodd
