I was surprised to fine this heavy of a guage of strings. I didn't know they existed. The thing about heavy strings is that you have much more ability to play with dynamic resonance – something you can't really get with light guage strings. With these strings, you can play as softly as you wish but when you really want it to "come out" they don't disappoint. I also only play with the fleshy tip of my fingers which melds into the subtle nuances of chord and solo performance.garycgrieve
The package is for C standard, not Drop C as some people mistakenly think…well, I guess you could use them for Drop C if you like veeeery stiff strings. If you want strings for Drop C, I'd suggest a skinny top/heavy bottom set of strings with an 11 up top and a 54 or so on the bottom so the bottom E tuned to C doesn't get floppy and knocked out of tune easily. Anyway, I've been using these for a long time on my USA core line PRS Custom 24 in C standard. They seem fine for going down a half step to B standard and feel fine even up half a step to C# standard. That's as high as I'd tune these strings up, though. I couldn't recommend these strings more!Josh
I have these strings on my schecter c-1 SLS blackjack tuned all the way down to drop A#, and let me tell you, despite being labeled as optimized for drop C, I don't recommend them for that tuning. 11-52s, 12-54s and 11-56s are better for Drop C, but for Drop B and Drop A#, you will not find a better gauge than these on a 25.5 scale length guitar or a 26.5 baritone. The tension is absolutely perfect! It feels like a 10-52 set in E standard with the E string tuned to D! Like with all D'addarios, they are bright, long lasting, they feel smooth and they absolutely love locking tremolos. I can yank my floyd rose all I want and it still will not go out of tune. Since D'addarios are bright as I stated before, they also remain clear under high gain, which I use my marshall JVM on the red channel with a maxon OD as a boost and a peavey 5150. Between the tuning stability, the tension, the reliability, the playability and the string life, you cannot go wrong with these for baritone tunings!Daniel

These are for you if you tune lower than D or even C, their loud , their built to last , their cheap and yet at the same time the new string sound doesn't go away. D'Addario have been around this long for a reason. If you're new to 12-52 strings these are a great first set. Well first lets focus on the gauge as it is features, the thicker the string the longer it stays in tune and the louder and stronger the strings are. If you want to tune below D these are for you, you can get all the way down to open B or lower depending on your style. Not a huge jump from regular strings either so you won't have any problems adapting to them. Well the new string sound stays longer than most brands I've tried compared to my local guitar shops or fender super bullets which are hands down the worst brand. Plus they can really take the abuse of detuned black metal without any concern that they'll break, you can play these for an extended period of time until they rust and they'll still stay in tune. Only a few brands I keep coming back to as my store sells everything , these I can buy without any kind of hesistation because their cheap but yet have this awesome new string sound, that and like I said before their built to last.Jason Tallwood
I broke down and tuned to down a half step with these. I hear a massive difference with these, and for good reason. More mass, more power, more sustain. More Steel. Looking for a pair of strings for youre heavy work with a bright nickel-wound sound? Youre search is over! These strings come with the standard Daddario quality so you know youre good. Daddario strins have never failed on me, I have to replace them because of the dirt after a couple weeks rather than because the strings break. This gauge is also appropriate for lower drop tunings. Absolutely great for Drop C tuning, but youll manage to get a good sound out of it even in drop B.

I raise the issue of product description, which is not good. What's the difference between these strings and standard D'addario NYXL's – not very clear. What exactly is "balanced tension?" Not described very well. Retailers should be offering advice and information to customers who may want a change but don't know which to choose. Having said that, these strings are "very good" with good all round sound with a smooth tone. Are they any better that standard NYXL's – don't really know.John A.
I've used D'Addario for years but I've always had to change them before every gig (acid sweat I'm afraid… yuk). You know what I mean. Even after wiping the strings down, same thing… corrosion. No corrosion with these though, must be a new alloy. NYXLs last me at least 5 gigs and that includes a couple of hours practise every day. I bottled out before the last gig and changed them but not before I deliberately tried to break them with a few 2 and 2.5 step bends and they didn't. The tuning stability is excellent with very little break in time. OK they don't sound as 'zingy' after a couple of days but I can live with that and yes they are twice the price of regular XLs but if they last 5 times as long then I don't care, I'm quids in!gingoblin

A colleague of mine turned me on to these, and in particular to this strange gauge of 9.5 – 44. I had struggled in the past with standard 9s on a guitar with high output pickups and a warble-happy whammy bar. I find these strings to handle really nicely, a perfect amount of slick and grip (finger contact) and they positively scream in my current configuration. I've put them on a guitar that I don't play live often, and I find that the strings don't deteriorate over time with the guitar being left in the case. This is very subjective and a question of personal chemistry. I mean, I've seen players go through a pack of the best "long-lasting" string on the market in one night, so it'll always come down to which material lends itself to your handling. I have been using these strings for about a year now, when I had to drop down to 8 gauge strings due to carpal tunnel in my left hand. I wanted to go with a higher quality string since I would be using such a light gauge. The NYXL series does not disappoint. They are extremely flexible, stay in tune, last a really long time and they sound incredible. I had concerns that I would be sacrificing tone, but this has not been the case. This is the first time I tried these D'Addario NYXL strings. I got the nickel wound electric strings, regular light. I think these strings are one of the best I've used. I started playing guitar when I was very young so I've been playing for a lot of years. These nickel wound electric guitar strings are easy to play. The strings are nice on the fingers. Some strings make my finger tips get tuff, but tuff to the point that it affects the preasure I use on the strings. These nickel wound strings don't do that. I have had them on for some time now and none of them broke. I like the tone of the strings. It made tuning the guitar very easy after I strung it. There is something to say about having strings that are easy to string, tune, and have a great tone. If you are playing out some where and a string breaks you need to work kind of fast to get up and playing again. These strings do the trick.penny

Overall: Tried these out on a Gretsch Pro Jet and the combination was a game changer for me. Took a minute to get used to the feeling, but now I won’t play anything else on that guitar. Rich, warm tone with a fair amount of sparkle. Especially good for jazz chording and rhythm playing. The price is made up for in longevity. These strings sound great after weeks of heavy use.
D'adddario are quality strings.I have used TI in the past. and DR flatwound. The TI swing 12's were great sounding but expensive. The DR flatwound 11's were good also . I prefer the gauge on the Dr 11's. Recently I went back to the Daddario chromes. To get the guage I wanted I purchased Chromes 10's, replaced the 1'st string with an 11 and the 3rd with a 22.(Equivalent to the DR 11's) At this time they sound great. Quality sounding strings and the price is not bad compared to TI and DR. I have also used the Chromes 11's, but have found the gauges in this pack to be a little heavier than what I was used to. I'll probably stick to Chromes 10 and replace the first with an 11 and third with a 22, As far as tone the Chromes are brighter than the DR. The first electric guitars I ever got up close and personal with were owned by Country-Western groups and Popular Music bands. As I recall all of their guitars had flatwounds on them… When I finally decided that Rock Music and the guitar was for me it was 1965. Most everything was round wound then for a more wild raucous sound… cheaper too…. flatwounds were out of fashion. Well here it is all these years later and D'Addario still make flatwounds. I began a renewed interest in learning some of the older sounds I heard as a kid, so decided to try these on a Stratocaster. D'Addario is a great string and I am looking forward to the experience… my only complaint is that Musicians Friend does not carry the Ultra light set in 9 gauge which I would prefer on the Strat. I have a first gen Fender Telecoustic [2002] that I use as a travel guitar and for certain song parts live and in the home studio. I had been using extra light acoustic strings, which worked pretty well, but I recently started using the XL115W's and they are perfect for this guitar. The acoustic sound is bright and clear and the electric sound is just awesome – giving me all I could want. If you're looking for a different approach to stringing up your acoustic-electric, give these strings a try. BTW I tried the XL110W's on the Telecoustic first and liked them, but the 115's are perfect.
After buying these strings and slapping them on my Ibanez Artcore semi-hollow, I can honestly say that the best thing I have ever did to improve my guitar's tone was put higher gauge strings on it. Maybe semi-hollows just resonate better with them, not sure. The round 3rd string is pretty clutch – the strings I used to put on would have a very noisy, tinny-sounding 3rd string and having a wound one like this has completely solved that issue. My Artcore would just sound too twangy in general with lighter strings on it, too – and having heavier gauge strings improved that issue by leaps and bounds. I'm not exactly an expert in tone so I can't argue about the finer points of the sound these strings make – but my bottom line is, they help me to better access the range of sounds that I want from my instrument, and that's what matters. Definitely 5 stars for tone. I have one complaint though: I am an abusive bender, as it were. When I bend the strings, I push their limits pretty friggin hard, and these particular strings will only take so much. Had a string break on me yesterday while I was bending really hard but I had another set hanging around so it was all good. My lighter gauge strings from before would withstand this abuse beautifully – but just keep in mind that when you move up to thicker strings, you're making a trade-off: the thicker strings will wear out and break more quickly if you push them too hard and bend them abusively like I do. On the subject of bending, also: with the wound 3rd string, if you want to bend it, you need to bend it a lot further to get the interval that you want, so just be prepared for that. All in all however, I am VERY happy with these strings. I'll have to take it easy on the bending a little bit, but for me that's more than a worthy trade-off for strings that really make my baby sing like she should. I can't necessarily speak for how these would sound on other guitars because I've never heard what they sound like on others, but I would MOST DEFINITELY recommend them for anyone playing a hollow or semi-hollow guitar. These strings helped with tuning stability issues I was having with an (Indonesian, fat neck) Epiphone 335 Dot, which I love but the unwound G string was going out of tune. Swapped out the bridge (Guitar Fetish–nice choice and half the price of TonePro) and the nut (Graph Tech), which also helped. I retained the lower three strings from the 'Heavy Bottom" set I had on it already. The top 3 strings sound great, but I've only had 'em on for a few days. I also put these on another 335-style guitar, but the bottom 3 strings felt just a bit flimsy switching back and forth with the Epi, not surprisingly. They sound good, nice and acoustically rich.Doc

I mostly play R&B and Blues. Essentially, I am rhythm player. With the exception of a few 8 to 24 bar solos, I am not the center of attention. When I'm front and center I still need to sound good. These strings help. These strings are awesome. The tone is amazing. Occasionally, I have to tune down one-half step. These strings are one of the few that will work well in both standard and dropped tunings. If the guitar is set up correctly, these strings aren't an issue. This means a very low action isn't going to happen. Medium strings work with medium action. If the action is too low for the string gauge, your guitar will buzz and become uncomfortable. Since more metal will drive your magnets with more oomph, using slightly heavier strings is a very cost effective way to improve your tone. I've been usinging EXL115 strings and their less eco-frinedly packaged predecessor XL115 since the late 1980s. I've tried other brands with exactly the same gauge. These typically worked as well for slightly more money, and I suspect that they where cranked out of the same factory.AZ Bluesman
I have put these on a Gibson 335 copy guitar, in place of my usual D'Addario 10's gauge, and I find the tone and feel even better than it was before, the extra beef on the shorter scale neck suits it very well. Still light enough to play comfortably, but now feels a better balance, for me it was just slightly underpowered with 10's gauge on that type of instrument, whereas 10's gauge is pretty much perfect on a Fender scale length neck.Christopher W.
Back in 2008 or so, I bought my first 'jazz box' style guitar. To be succinct here, it was my first full bodied, electric with f-holes similar to Ibanez' George Benson model or Gibson's L-4 model, but minus the hefty price tag. Mine is a Washburn J-3. When I got the guitar, it needed fresh strings and after showing it off to my local music store, they suggested a set of D'Addario Nickle Plated 11's since I don't do much string bending. In my own application, they worked since I use 12's on my acoustics and 10's on my LP and Strat. After putting them on my J-3, the sound was great! These strings are clear, bright, but also full bodied in their tone. They were a great choice for this application. Plus, the price at MF is also a plus. SInce I don't use my jazz as often as my other guitars, these strings hold up well and long. Usually, the main reason for my changing them out is build up on the strings from my fingers or it's been over 6 months since the last string change. This is a nice package set of guitar strings. You get ten sets in one box. that makes it so nice to not have to keep buying them so often. I really like how they packaged these guitar strings. the outer box is smaller than you would think for ten sets of guitar strings. But instead of having each set of guitar strings in another box individually, they have each set of guitar strings in its own bag, that is sealed. Made it easier to find a place to store the extra guitar strings for when I need them next. Was easier to stow an extra set in my guitar case since it was not in a stiff box, but in a sealed bag instead. I like how the guitar strings are color coded on the package and the string. These D'Addario EXL110-3D strings are great! They are bit heavier than the 'slinkys' that my son usually uses, but he really likes these too. They go on easy, and seem strong. They sound amazing! My son has 1 of the 3 sets on his strat, I have one set on my vintage 80's Ibanez, and the third set is a spare in case we break any strings. They give a rich on the lows and bright on the highs tone. They feel good on the fingers, and have the right amount of give. The intonation is excellent and these, apparently D'Addario's best selling strings, will possibly last a long time. I read that the core of these strings is hexagonal in shape, which helps the way the wrap sounds, feels and behaves. These strings have a really nice sustain too, and seem to stay in tune better than other brands we've used. I think these would make a great gift, as they come in a set of 3, but also these are good to stock up on for yourself. We'll definitely be getting more!Kedst123
Bought a 10 pack in 1992. Still have a couple sets left. My main Warmoth partscaster wears the strings out in about 5 years. You read that correctly, i leave those strings on until the winding on the D string wears off. Not that they break. I gig regularly and I use stainless steel frets on my partscasters. These strings come Unwound from the bead once installed on your guitar. I've never had any other type of string do this to me before. Here's the scenario: my first string starts to detune gradually as if my tuning machine is loose… a slight mystery at first, then it won't hold a note, and comes unwound from itself at the bridge. Three times this has happened to me 9n two separate guitars. I will never use these strings on a guitar again. Failure of the worst kind.Ben

I took a lot of years off and I had stock 10s on my G&Ls that was killing my hands so I played those for a while and endured my shortcomings as my hands were in training to regain the strength of my youth. Then made the switch to Ernie Ball Hybrid 0946s and that felt better but still felt like a battle when playing faster licks and solos. A friend suggested that I try the NYXL0942. Wow! I felt like I was in a time warp and back to my old self from years ago. These NYXLs have initially withstood my bending and time will tell to see if they are as tough as advertised. Also they feel like I am playing nylon strings so they are a lot more comfortable. Could be the lighter gauge but I think the string design also has something to do with that. The only thing I notice is that they do not ring out as loudly as my previous strings but it does not matter when you plug in. Really glad about these strings and will probably be putting these on all my guitars.MediumSexy
I love the sound of NYXL. They provide me with a pearl like sound that I can use for jazz as well as for heavier sounding music. The strings have qualities that last for a very long time. I usually change my strings every week. I left them for a month on my guitar just to see how they would sound. They sound fantastic… they would lose some freshness after about two weeks but they still hold a great deal of quality after two months playing. They also stay in tune after you pull your strings. When I tried the 9s I thought I would lose some of the warmth and fullness, but they sound fairly consistent with with heavier guage strings and are easier to play and bend. D'Addario's EXL170 Nickel Wound Bass Guitar Strings (Regular Light Gauge [45-100] Long Scale) are a solid choice for a new set of strings for a standard 4-string electric bass guitar. They are engineered for a brighter tone, rather than a more mellow sound, with a nickel wound design. To my ears, they are indeed easily capable of generating a sharp, crisp tone for bass guitar that is well suited for musical arrangements in which the bass guitar is a prominent component of the melody. I received the set of D'Addario EXL170 Lights and I am very pleasantly surprised. I usually use a "thicker" gauge string set (EB Slinky Round 55-110's). I like the feel and the deeper sound I can get. This wasn't my first set of D'Addario strings. Just my first set in many years. I will admit we liked the "brighter" tone I got out of these. These strings did make the bass part of some of our songs a little different in tone, but it was a welcome difference. The color coding on the strings will make it easy for beginners to string their own basses. The size I feel will also help in the learning process. I installed these on a Ibanez GSR190 and use a Kustom KXB100 as the main amp for practice. In closing, I would recommend these strings for anyone who seeking a good clean and bright tone out of their bass. For years I've been trying numerous gauges and brands of strings for playing in Drop C. I currently play 25.5 scale guitars, but used to play 24.75 which made finding the right strings difficult. I thought I found the right set when I started using the 10-52 set and replacing the 52 for a 56, but I started wearing out the 10s on top so I went for this set. The lower strings are beefy enough to handle riffs, but the .42 (A) and .30 (D) strings still give and breath enough for smoother playing. The 11s on top feel like 10s in standard which make them great for soloing or playing fuller chords. Definitely recommend this gauge.Justin_lee2014

Bought these at a local store and tried them last night on my 90's fender jazz plus. Didn't like the sound. The g string was very dull. I do a little popping, and I couldn't hear it. The D string was not much better. The A string was boomy. E and B were fine. I turned knobs all night trying to get a balanced sound. I like punchy bright, and never got this. I made a lot of mistakes last night due to focus on tone adjustments instead of playing. I may give Dunlop brights or DR's a try. Usually use Fender strings.Garry the dog

Recently bought a Tele with an older set of D'Addario's on it. I'd never used them (been an Ernie Ball man since the 80's) and thought I'd give 3 identical sets (I use 9-46 EB's) a try on different guitars (Tele, Strat, LP). I have to admit that decades of EB use must taint my opinion, which is that the D'A's seem less lively sounding dynamically. They do feel more stable somehow when flat-picking… and I like that same sense of 'stability' when finger picking individual chord notes around the first 4 frets. Power chords have a better mid-range tonality perhaps. Glad I tried them, but it takes me months to come to any great conclusion…. will continue to be open minded (while I keep Ernie Ball's on my others).islandtomyself
These are on of the best sets of guitar strings you can buy these days. They are very bright sounding strings and also not squeaky sounding either because they are relatively smooth in comparison to others. I believe that they retain their new sound for longer as well. Only downside for me is that this multipack of strings are NOT individually wrapped in their own packaging so each string has to be separated from the other 5 in the pack when fitting them to your guitar. This may well save on paper packaging but I find this very irritating. I was saying to myself at the time I wish that they were old faithful Ernie Balls which are all individually wrapped. In fairness though, the string ferrules are colour coded so you don't get mixed up as to which string is which.fireball14017
