I just completed my Mod 102 kit. An excellent experience! I was delighted with the quality of components, clarity of instructions, and, perhaps most importantly, the sound of the amp. It is very loud – currently running into my Fender Twin Reverb cab (2×12) and very sweet! I will be running it into a new 1×12 cab with a new Celestion G12 M Heritage 'Greenback' when I get a case for the speaker (on order). My only criticism (and something to look out for) is that the chassis is very nicely painted in gray gunmetal paint. Even following the directions to file all the holes, it is very hard to get a good ground connection at every point a terminal strip connects. I worried about this, and about 1/3rd of the way through the build, took an ohm meter to check all the connections, and as I had suspected, some of the connections were not great (9-10 ohms or so!) So I removed the terminal strips (with the components I had already soldered still attached) and scraped away the paint under the tabs of the strips to ensure a good connection. Re-testing showed virtually zero resistance. I'd strongly recommend scraping the paint away at all holes under the chassis before getting started on the build. Even better, suggest that Amplified Parts leave the inside chassis unpainted (at least around the important holes). Aside that one criticism, I am delighted with the kit and with Amplified Parts. Everything was delivered promptly and they are a class outift. I'll probably try some of their other kits soon.vpmerlyn
I spent three evenings building the MOD102. The instructions are very easy to understand and the amp has a great Fender sound. I had one grounding issue that was easily fixed with a little help from tech support, which was excellent. If you're good at following step by step instructions and can solder well this is a fun little amp to build. Only small issue is the labels. They could stand an improvement.Brandon
I just finished this amp build and it sounds fantastic! I also just finished a Marshall 18 Watt clone and I have to say that the Mod102+ holds its own very nicely alongside the Marshall. In fact, I will probably use the Mod102+ for recording because it sounds amazing at lower volumes (the Marshall is loud AF). Honestly, if I were only going to build one of them today, it would be the Mod. I'm blown away by the tone! Great kit with excellent instructions. Great bang for the buck. The parts all seem to be top quality. I love the old style cloth solid core wire, too. I find it much easier to work with than modern stranded wire. The labels are a bit lame but I covered them with packing tape as suggested before cutting them out and they look fine. If you're thinking about building an amp, build this one.danjbeckett

Nice little kit! Instructions are pretty clear and it's certainly not overly complicated to build. Having some amp repair/building experience helps, but I'd say even a beginner could buy this, build it, and be playing it within a day or so. Once built it sounded pretty good as well. Fun to swap tubes around, substituting the 12AX for a 12AT, AY, or others. The 'effect' changes on the pull switches are pretty subtle, so don't expect anything dramatic there. But, the amp makes a great platform for learning, and even 'expanding' from the original design. I've put an EIA connector in the back of mine so I don't have a cord sticking out. I put some tall 'feet' on it so it would clear a speaker box handle. And, the power transformer is suitable for adding a 6CA4 rectifier, which I plan to do in the future. I'll have to move the filter capacitor section around some to make clearance for the socket, but it's a 6 volt 9-pin rectifier, so will work perfectly in this amp. I might even 'upgrade' the output transformer….or play with some yellow jacket type adapters to try a different output tube. In all, a lot of fun to build, sounds great for what it is, and I'm very glad I made the purchase!! A 'GREAT' value!!!Tom

I got this as a Christmas gift. I never built an amp before but I do have good solder experience and general electrical knowledge. The amp worked perfectly on the first build. After following all the testing procedures I plugged in and it worked perfectly. I am extremely pleased with the sound quality. I have owned 2 other tube amps and neither sounded this good. It is surprising how low the noise is and how great it sounds. The other interesting thing is the pedals I have sound better in front of this amp versus any amp I have ever used them on. My tube screamer pedal sounds amazing in front of this amp. The gain is all there with less noise and better voicing. I have no idea why that is but I could not be happier.

I ordered this kit with a mod to use KT 66 power tubes. The changes were easy to make and it sounds fantastic. The classic JTM 45 tone at a manageable volume level with the master volume control. Just to test it out I've used a power soak and the tone is exactly the same using the master volume. A couple of real nice features of the design are the negative feedback switch and the ability to switch between solid state and tube ratification (the tube sounds better to my ears). Great little amp. Decent sound assembled with the base components – I use it paired with some Parts Express BR-1 speakers. Some have complained about the bass response – I went and modified it with some Edcor output transformers and orange drop caps. The low end has returned with a vengeance, and now I am limited by the speakers. The upgrade path has begun.
I built this amp 4 years ago, and have used it a lot. It's connected to a pair of ELAC DB62-BK speakers. It was fun to build and has been very reliable. I upgraded it with Hammond 1615A output transformers, and the extra iron makes it sound much better. I haven't replaced any tubes yet, but would be interested in options for tube upgrades.Shayne

I LOVE the 5F1 kit: This was really enjoyable to build, and I had the benefit of a pro adviser to help me when I had questions, so I can even say it was easy. I am going to go as far as to say it sounds really fantastic. I use this amp almost all the time now, and with an attenuator, I can crank it all the way up and play at bedroom levels with the crunchy tube tone I crave, without disturbing the neighbors. It is every bit as great sounding as my Victoria REGAL. If you don't know what that amp is, it is all tube, has a variable power output all the way up to 35W, driven through a 15" speaker with reverb and tremolo. Obviously, this Champ kit is only 5 W, and doesn't even have an EQ (or any other frills whatsoever) and YEAH, it sounds THAT good. Rich harmonics, great crunch when cranked, sounds clean at level 3 or below, and responds well to the volume knob on your guitar. It is incredible. BUY IT!Bobby Bellpepper

This is really a superb kit! I have assembled electronic kits for over 50 years, including Knight Kits from Allied Radio and HeathKit. I did not think I would ever see a kit as nice those once made by these now long gone companies. But Tube Depot has surpassed anything I have ever seen before. Components are all good quality and every single part is individually packaged and marked. Printed instructions were included, which I was not expecting. The instructions are excellent. My amp passed all tests and worked perfectly the first time I turned it on. The sound is superb, much nicer than the Vox AC15 which I purchased fully assembled. I don't really need another guitar amplifier, but this little 5 watt practice amp is so nice and was such a pleasure to build, I will probably end up buying another of your kits anyway! I will probably sell the AC15 and replace it with one of Tube Depot's larger British style amps with a 12 inch speaker cabinet. Do not hesitate to buy this kit! You will not be disappointed.

For those of you who like short reviews: Overall, I thought that this book was worth the cost. Here are some thoughts on specific sections I had as I read the book: This book was published over twenty-five years ago. I mention that only for those people who are concerned about such things. Designs for Tube-type Instrument Amps were more or less codified another twenty years before then, so it is pretty much a moot point for me. That said, there is a Chapter on Speakers that could be updated. While underlying concepts remain the same, today´s Speakers are made of new, improved materials. If you own a tube amp and know little or nothing about tube amps or amp electronics in general, then Chapters Fifteen and Sixteen, ´What NOT To Do´ and ´Technical Tips´ are probably worth the cost of the book right there. If your interest in this book is Amp Mods, be aware that the author is a Marshall kind of guy and although Basic Principles remain the same, modifications for other brands of amps are not described. There are also some Troubleshooting Flowcharts included. I have not had occasion to use them, but they look very well done. This book is not a collection of schematics and is not intended as that sort of reference work. Bearing that in mind, a few schematics or circuit sections could have been very helpful in illustrating the text. A sample schematic would be especially useful in the chapter on biasing. Final assessment: This is a good introduction to the topic of Tube Amps. Techs and other Advanced Readers might want to look elsewhere. This is Technical Material, so you can expect some Math, Science and Big Words, but there is nothing here beyond the High School level. Recommended for Beginners and Early Intermediate.michaelmx

(9v battery not included). perfect for those situations where you don't need to blast the neighbors but still want a funky tone.this is a complete cigar box amp kit, and includes all of the parts you'll need to build your own 2.5-watt amplifier. the box is a beautiful all-wood oliva g cigar box, and the kit includes some nice decorative shiny nickel box corners (with matching screws) to help dress it up. the main listing photo shows an example of the amplifier that can be built with this kit. the guts of this amp kit is a 2.5 watt amp board, which really puts out some nice sound considering its size and input power. the amp board comes with 1-foot wire leads pre-soldered to the key connection points, to eliminate some of the more fiddly bits of assembly for you. this kit includes a four-page how-to sheet that shows wiring diagrams and covers some key points about wiring and assembly. only basic soldering skills, and an ability to read simple wiring diagrams, are required to assemble this kit.

We designed this kit as a very clean-sounding 14-watt guitar amplifier. this is great for learning new songs or just playing along with your favorite music. it is fun to put together and sounds great. it will accept your guitar input via a 1/4" phono jack. the guitar sound is then routed thru a marshall tone stack with bass, mid and treble controls. it is then fed to a pre-amplifier prior to going into a 14-watt audio amplifier. connect the output to your speaker cabinet for a neat experience. the pcb is is approx 5.5" wide x 2.5" deep. the output is available at a 1/4" jack and at a 2-pin screw terminal. you get both in the kit. the operating voltage is 12vdc. it has two 1000uf capacitors on the input power for additional filtering. you will need a 12vdc power supply capable of delivering at least 2 amps, a 20-watt or better power supply will work just fine. this is a kit. you will need soldering tools and supplies. a 4 to 8 ohm, 10w speaker is required, none is supplied. we also offer this as a built & tested unit for those that do not want to build it themselves. we are family-owned and ship out of ocala fl. all of our products are designed and assembled by us.
