I have used various D'Addario strings since the early 80s. I was 'aware' of them in the 70s but I typically used Fender strings on electrics and Martin on acoustics. I have always maintained that D'Addario strings are cheap, plentiful, and get the job done. The argument could be made that there are better strings out there ("boutique" strings) but D'Addarios are available in any music store and they are consistently good. I think I only had one or two sets where the unwound strings were nasty…. they looked 'kinked' and didn't sound right. One or two sets out of how many hundreds of sets?? As to these particular strings, I have a 1947 Gibson L-5 and it just feels more 'right' with caveman strings. I'm not one of those 30s rhythm players that go runka chunka all day long, I play it like any other guitar, and it begs for heavy strings. D'Addario has them available….not everyone does, ya know. I bought these strings today because my local store was sold out of my usual Elixir brand. I just put them on my old Gibson acoustic, and all of the ball ends are color-coded wrong, and the strings are turning my fingers black after 20 minutes of playing. They sound OK, but really? I usually purchase the ultra light bluegrass style and was happy to see that these are the same top notch quality. The ultra lights are a must if you want easy on the fingers. These are great strings be not for everyone. They are different in that they aid the upper register of vocals. I've put them on a 00-27 and a J 200; tow very different guitars. The affect is magical for those musicians who want a harp-like tone from their steel strung axe. They have an interesting configuration. From e to E; 12, 16,12,16, 23 W, 30 W. I have tried countless strings over the years, and these John Pearse strings are fantastic! You name it, I've tried it. Everything from D'Addario, Elixer, Martin, Gibson, DR, Cleartone and even Dean Markley. Cheap and expensive, I have tried them. All I can say is that these are the best acoustic strings I have tried to date. I just went from a set of Elixers (which I thought were expensive, but good) to these, and these strings won out hands down. As soon as I installed these, my guitar absolutely came ALIVE! It was almost like night and day. Everything was better! Immediately what I noticed was the added volume and projection I was getting, but most of all, it was the tone that absolutely sold me on these. With these strings I heard more woodiness, percussive body, clarity, string to string definition, harmonic overtones, and resonance than any other acoustic strings I have heard to date. The top end also opened up and became even more tactile and transparent. These strings are just more organic, yet highly defined and less sterile than anything else I have heard, and they also have a very balanced output from string to string that is excellent. In no small measure, these strings have been a bit of a revelation. These strings are also very smooth, and I also noticed less finger noise between fretting notes and bar chords as well. However, regarding that smoothness, I also noticed something interesting as well. Just try to follow me with this: These are the first set of John Pearse strings I have ever installed, so I don't know if this is a "one off", but as smooth as they are, I also noticed that the unwound strings have an ever so slightly uneven and wavy finish to them in spots when you shine them in the light. I don't mention this as a negative IN ANY WAY, but just purely as an observation. Besides, I could care less because they sound so darn amazing. Anyway, my point of mentioning this (and this is based purely on conjecture), is I wonder if the barely perceptible finish inconsistencies contribute to the overall tonality of these strings? TBH, I have never seen strings that had this kind of "inconsistency" to their finish before, and I am wondering if this has anything to do with the great tonality of these strings? All the other strings I have bought over the years have been extremely smooth and consistent in their diameter and finish. Again, I don't mention this as a negative in any way because you never feel this while playing in the least. The only time I noticed it was when I looked at them under direct light. These strings sound fantastic, and obviously their specific alloy and construction plays a great part to their sound, but on the other hand, I have never seen strings with this kind of finish before, and yet I have also never been so excited about a set of strings before either. There has to be something to it. The only other thing I can mention is that these strings also have excellent string life as well. I have had these on my acoustic after about a month and a half of use, and they still sound fantastic! Had a pesky b and e string on short scale 000. Solution was it wanted more tension to ring true. The 13 and 18 did it; short scale so they play like lighter strings! The 22w g is awesome, the rest balance nicely. 52 is lite for E but not much of a sacrifice; drop D tuning still do-able. SO HAPPYJohn

I put these strings on a older Alvarez guitar and all I can say is WOW what a voice change! The Martin Retro Monel Bluegrass string made my inexpensive student model guitar sound like a much higher end instrument. The clarity and sustain is so much better than the 80/20's I used to use and the life span is at least double if not triple of the 80/20's. Try a set you won't be sorry.Mark

I have been reading about pure nickel strings and I've wanted to give them a try. The Martin Retro reviews were good and if Tony Rice likes them and uses them, they must have something positive to offer. I've only had them on my dread (solid mahogany b/s and Adi top) for a couple of weeks…but I love them. I hear the tone of the guitars wood. Not too bright but also not too dark or muddy. Very mellow. Urban legend has it that they get better with age. We'll see. But they sounded good new and they guitar sounds great after two weeks. Too early to tell or comment on how long they stay this way. I will be buying more and use them again. Time to try them out on an OM.B

Replaced the dead right out of the box elixir string that SUCKED and these brought the guitar back to life and it now sounds and plays wonderfully. Well, I guess for some, these would be great strings, but not for me. On the plus side, the sound is great, no doubt about that. Nice bright tone. Sounds sweet with distortion or clean. When I play clean and kick on the chorus they sound perfect. Same with distortion. And they look good, too. But, and this is a big but, as some others have said they are thick. For me, it's just the low strings that I have a problem with the thickness. Like when I play on the low E string, I feel like I'm playing bass. This isn't really a problem sometimes, like if I'm strumming or playing chords, but if I'm shredding, it just doesn't work out for me. I'm used to playing GHS xtra light Boomers. So this was a BIG difference. Luckily, I got some GBXL's too. I mean, I know they make Progressives in lighter gauges, but I can't find them anywhere. These strings are good, just too heavy of a gauge for my tastes.In conclusion, if you just play power chords and breakdowns, these strings are great. But if you're doing a lot of sweeping or legato, I wouldn't recommend these. I'm not the best guitar player, so they may be perfect for other people, but for me, they are just way too thick.The Jester

I've tried just about every string on the market over the last 20 years. For years, I swore by Martin Phosphor Bronze Custom Lights. My primary guitars were an older sunburst Taylor 210ce (ES1), a Boulder Creek A/E, an Ibanez Jumbo w/ Fishman Sonicore pup and a Martin LXME. I was very happy with the Martin strings, but then I bought a Taylor 214ce (ES2) that came with these Elixir HD strings. I had tried Elixirs a long time ago, thought the sounded "good, but never great." I dig that "new string" brightness for performance and the Elixirs just sounded "pretty decent", but were "pretty decent" for a long time. That is not the case with these new HD Elixirs. They're bright and articulate. I've switched to Elixir HD's on all of my acoustics (except the Martin LXME, still better with Martins). I wouldn't usually bother with reviewing strings, but the other guitarist mentioned my strings were starting to sound a little dead. I knew the Elixirs had been on there for a LONG time, so I logged into my MF account to see when I ordered them. It had been slightly over a year! I'd put over a hundred hours on these strings! I used to restring 2-5 guitars per month…11 guitars, 5 of which are used regularly. If a pack of Martin's lasted for a month, I thought that was great. Technology has improved! Elixir HD's are that new $#!+ and I am a convert!DayGloYellO

I find them great. They hold their tone a long time – And I mean for around three months & sometimes longer. Of course, strings can sound a bit ordinary if you don't tune properly. They also hold their tuning well. I don't find that they suffer from corrosion, even though I live in a very corrosive area on the coast. But of course I play probably every day and usually give them a quick wipe down before returning guitar to it's case, especially while they are new. Not so much after 3 or 4 weeks old. I mostly use them on a Taylor 312ce. I plan to try them on a Yamaha I use for slide too.Brendon

On the back of a promotional appearance in my facebook I bought 2 sets of these strings and so far, I'm pretty impressed. As all acoustic guitar players realise, their instrument can sound wildly different just with different strings on it. So, first impressions was a much fuller and better defined mid range than competing brands. Its in this area that normal bronze strings usually fade quickest and I'm happy to say after many sessions that these phospher bronze strings are holding up well. That aside, the biggest plus is the top end. Does better definition, more volume with less marginal string/fret interferance sound good to you? Well, this is the forte of these strings. My favourite thing is bluegrass picking and these strings fit that bill well. Cutting through Banjo and Mandolin playing volumes is no easy task and I'm happy to say the Elixer HD lite does that very well. Though slightly larger on the top end, they retain that light gauge 'feel' that encourages greater experimentation with a lot less hand cramp that is common with thicker gauges. Overall I'd give these strings 9.5/10 with the .5 mark down only for excessively bright sound that seems to be inherent in Elixer strings anyway on my Maton CW225. If you have a very woody sounding instrument I'm sure these strings will sound especially good. Well done Elixer a really great string.Colin

I never get involved with commentary of products, but I feel obligated to say WOW, with Martins new Authentic Acoustic line of strings. Installed the PB variety on my 000-28ec, my Gibson sj200, and my Collings CJmh, in each case there was an immediate improvement in all areas of tone. Pardon the cliche', but in every way the guitars came to life. Great sustain, solid bass, and smooth bell like treble. I have tried many strings over the years, and yes there are differences, but never tothe degree I hear with these. A vast improvement in all areas, IMOP. Can't say how long they'll last, haven't had them on that long. Ther worth a try to any guitar out there. And I will always buy from Strings and Beyond. For the last couple years, I’ve been comparing these Lifespan 12-54 against other coated phosphor-bronze sets: D’Addario EXP 12-53 & D’Addario XT 12-53 & D’Addario XS 12-53 & Elixir’s Light nano set. These Martin Lifespan strings have given me no issues, except that my low E string bridge pin doesn’t quite want to press all the way in (due to being cut for a 53 vs 54 gauge string). I didn’t think that small variation would matter, but it seems to! Even with the bridge pin slightly protruding higher than the others, these strings sound great and have lasted quite a long time without degrading in tone or feel. My pick eventually does cut up the coating, which visibly frays and starts to dull the string sound. But, this is after much time and use. I like the sound and feel of the strings, and will now be comparing them to the new D’Addario XS strings, which claim to survive picking better than any other string, while using a thinner coating. We shall see! At this time I can report that I like the Martin Lifespans fairly equally to D’Addario EXPs, which sound and respond better (in my experience) than Elixir’s comparable strings. I have not yet concluded my XT and XS testing to compare, but I expect them to perform as (or more) durably as these Lifespans. I anticipate the XS strings to sound and respond more like uncoated strings than the others listed above (including these Lifespans) while potentially surviving more punishment from my pointy Dunlop Primetone Flow plectrums! I’ll review the XS performance on that listing after finding the results. I have been pretty satisfied with these Lifespans, but not blown away in comparison to D’Addario’s coated offerings. They’re competitive and if you’re a Martin lover, these are an easy set-it-and-forget-it option that give a longer replacement cycle than Martin’s uncoated strings without sounding completely dull. You can get a still good low-end brassy growl on these until their coating starts to fray. However, you’ll definitely also want to try a set of D’Addario’s coated strings to pick a favorite based on their response with your own guitar, picking technique, and sound preferences. I found Lifespans to be pretty stable for intonation and gradually become less strident/bright in tone through use (wear at the picking location). D’Addario lights may have a touch less power (fundamental frequency) on the lowest string. They both respond well and sustain well on my guitar, with the D’Addarios remaining extremely stable with intonation. [For reference, the strings mentioned here were all installed on a very fine Larrivee LV-10 (sitka & EIT) built around year 2000. The guitar has a TON of rich mid-to-high overtone presence and excellent string-to-string balance with good dynamic range and sustain. Most strings sound pretty good on it, but the timbre does noticeably change with different strings. These changes in overtone prominence are difficult to express in a written review…. Larrivee calls for D’Addario 12-53 gauge phosphor bronze strings. Bridge pins are ebony (like the bridge).]Daniel

Definitely the best strings at the price point lately. They have a thinner or smoother wind than Ernie Ball slinkys or Daddarrio exl and this results in less finger noise and a zingier tone IMO. I'm into clean and classic rock, and I doubt you would like these over the former two names if you were into more modern and metal sounds. It depends on the guitar for me, on my strat I could use just about any strings. My guitars with humbuckers seem more picky, at least to my ears. I prefer these over the other two as far as cheap strings go, and these are often cheaper. Win win. Used to be I would never have preferred Fender strings so either my tastes are changing or these strings have changed over the years.Joelish

Overall: Don't pay any attention to the low price these are great strings. Have used Fender 7250's on all kinds of bass guitars they always sound great and feel good. Years of use have proved quality. I put them on my Jazz bass, my PJ, and my Squire, have used them on Samick, Music man, OLP, and Epiphone basses, all good.Scott

According to a Fender rep, these are what came on the Fender PJ bass I ordered from Musician's Friend. They produce the classic Fender tone I wanted. I eventually replaced them with a set of Fender 7250L (.040, .060, .080, .100) to make it easier to play on the guitar's 9.5" fingerboard radius. I stayed with Fender because of the tone that the 7250M strings produce. The Light's have slightly less oomph on the low end, yet all the tone while the lighter gauge makes for nice melodic work on the high end of things. I was excited to try out the Blue Steel acoustic guitar strings. I got them in the mail and strung up my guitar with much anticipation. They were good at first, but after only about 20 minutes, my hands smelled like cheap metal, and the tone had already dulled. These strings made my high quality guitar sound like a tinny, cheap First Act Guitar. I would not recommend these strings to anyone. However, I would highly recommended Elixer nanowebs or polywebs. They are a far superior string. They are worth the extra price and will make any guitar sound great.Paul B.

Played guitar for 9 years. Have always picked and fretted with excessive force. My hands sweat and ruin strings. I've tried many strings, Elixrs were the best but too expensive, DR, D'addario, Ernie Ball, RotoSound….nothing felt like home. Somebody told me about these strings, I bought two packs of 12s and fell in love. Unlike the coated strings (Elixr) these are super-cooled so that the molecules lock together tighter. They stay in tune better than any strings I've played. These strings can take a beating. The tone is great for 4 or 5 weeks and it still sounds decent 2-3 months later. They are cheaper than most strings so you're crazy not to try them.TheCapitols

I've been using these strings for years. I love a wound 3rd string. They last up to a month for me where other brands only lasted a week tops. I just bought a new Les Paul with a Bigsby. It came with 9s on it and the intonation was way off. I had a set of 9s by EB and put them on to see what would happen. After a couple of days I could see it wasn't going to work out so I replaced them with a set of these 11s and the guitar locked right in tune.OleJazzer

These strings are much better than the strings I used to use. I love how the bottom end pops out a lot more and gives it a lot more foundation and volume. I'm looking forward to trying the naturals soon. I also got a set of custom strings from a friend on my worship team who also uses stringjoy, they sound and feel great on my electric. A few things first: the customer service at Stringjoy? 5 stars, no question. The overall attention to detail (especially with regards to packaging)? 5 stars. The feel/balanced tension of the set? 5 stars. Where they fell short for me was the sound/dynamic range and the overall longevity. I tried them on both of my Martin dreds (D16GT and D18 standard) and I wound up disappointed both times. They sounded ok at first, very bright and crisp as you'd expect, but I found they left something to be desired as far as overall dynamics are concerned, bordering on an almost 'tinny' sound that you might get from lesser sets. I also found that they dulled up and died out very quickly (before you ask, both guitars are kept on their cases with proper humidity control when not in use, and I make a point to wipe down the strings each time before putting them to bed). 3 days of moderate practice and one short gig was all it took for the D18. Off they came. Maybe I just got a 'meh' batch, maybe they're just not for me. In any case, that's my take. Again, everything else about this company is 5 star worthy, so keep that in mind.Jesse B

I had the opportunity to meet John Pearse at a Guitar Show in Nashville back in the 90's right after acquiring a Larravee 12 string. He very kindly handed me a set of his light guage 12 strings and said "try these on that guitar". I've used them exclusively on ever acoustic i have ever since then. The tone on my martin, larravee and takemine are the best i've found. I've played professionally for many years (30,,,,,oh man,,,) and find his strings to play evenly from rich low tones to crisp high tones. Bought these wanting something different than the usual Ernie Balls and Martins (good strings for sure). Priced a little higher, but the quality is there. I put these on my Ibanez Artwood 240 mahogany top guitar and love the tone I'm getting. Stay in tune very well, and seem to have a stronger feel and volume with them. The Ibanez came with "coated" strings which I dislike the feel of but with these, I can bend, hammer and pull with ease. Will buy again.guitarkis

Recently did a partial restoration of a 60's era Harmony Moneterey Archtop that belongs to my father. It had been stored in basements most of it's life, back pulled off and what not. Glued the back on, cleaned every part of the guitar and strung her up with these strings. Without the neck reset, I was able to get the action comfortable for playing. The strings seem to stay in tune about as well as excpeted for this guitar. I am able to bend strings, sure not as far as I could a lighter set, but to something enjoyable. The strings have a nice tone to them, and seem to have decent volume with finger style playing (which is what I do 98% of the time). Haven't tried a pick on them, although I'm sure they are even louder than my thumb nail, if using a pick. If one needs a set of decent economically priced strings, these will work. I'm not happy with the excessive squeaks and what not, because it just ruins recordings. It's annoying when practicing too. I'll be replacing with D'Adario or perhaps a cheap flatwound (some could be the guitar and further work needing done). However, I must say that these strings fit the budget, and were priced right for slapping on a guitar that I wasn't even sure I could get the action set for. The tone is very enjoyable, not to figure out how to stop the squeaks giving these strings squeak just doing an alternating pattern with one finger (melody, or bass). These are strings, what features are really necessary? These strings seem to be of good quality. They tune up, and reasonably hold tune on the guitar I installed them on. This guitar needs a neck reset, but I was able to get the action comfortable. They bend fairly easily. The only thing I am not impressed with, is the noisyness of the strings. Lots of squeaks and what not. I generally purchase the D'darrio version, which are priced a little higher. I decided to give Fender a try. Perhaps, with Fender, I should've went with Flatwound. Disappointed in the excessive sqeaks of these strings. Will be replacing with either Flatwounds, or D'Adario version. Near impossible to get a good sound on recordings with the sqeaks, and that's just changing one finger from one string to another (alternating pattern on chording). These strings are a good string for the money. I purchased them because they were cheaper than my normal brand. The purchased was to set the action on a Harmony Archtop I've been working on, and see how badly the neck needed rest. As of right now, with these strings, the neck is setting fine and not pulling any further than without strings. Worked for purpose I purchased them for, but will have to be replaced for a better set that aren't so noisy.bluesmanwithastrat

I've been a D'addario guy for a long time, and use them on all my guitars. I like the phosphor bronze tone on my acoustics, and use the extra lights because I have hand and finger joint issues. Actually 10s are pretty heavy for me, I use 8s on my electrics. Anyway, they sound great, are easy to play and have always been reliable for me.James

For years I refused to replace one of the low E machines on my Guild 12-string, as much on principle as anything else. I could only find a full set when I only needed one. The folks at Sam Ash knew my feeling and enthusiastically referred me back to the shop. Not only did I get a single machine, the price was more than right. A friend of mine put light gauge electric strings on his acoustic guitar so it would be easier to play. I did like the feel but the sound was too thin so when I came across the Extra Light D'Addario's for acoustics I was excited to try them. My preferred style of playing an acoustic has recently become almost all finger-picking without finger picks. I tried them on my vintage classic dreadnought Yamaha F335ii and they sound good with a little less low end and a little more thin high end which you would expect. Also there is a tendency for the little E string to rattle as I use an upward stroke with the index or middle finger to play it. I will try switching that string out with a little higher gauge to alleviate that problem. Your style (light or heavy) of playing may determine whether these strings are right for you. They are great for strumming light rhythm with a balanced bright sound using a Fender thin pick so I would definitely use them for recording rhythm parts. For recording finger-picked parts I will continue using regular light gauge strings on a Martin. The D'Addario extra lights are easy on the fingers and good for practicing any style. They would also be a good choice for beginnersdhughe1

I have tried many brands of guitar strings over the years, and usually use Martin on my acoustic, and D'Addario's on my Les Paul. This is the first time using Pearse strings. I cleaned and dressed my frets, installed an under the saddle pickup with an equalizer, a new bone saddle and nut, then the new Pearse strings. I couldn't be happier. The old early 70's Alvarez now sounds better than it ever has. I highly recommend any acoustic players that have not tried the Pearse strings, to do so.usaf_retired

I am quite happy with the Stringjoy Acoustic Strings and I'm still deciding which ones are my favorite. I recently put on the Foxwood and am now needing to record an "original guitar only song" with it on a direct track and a high end microphone track. Then I will do the same with the Naturals and also the Brights. At least I can then do a comparison but my suspicion is the I might prefer different strings for various purposes. Such being the case, I am not currently positioned to supply anyone with a FAVE RAVE!!!David F

Love these strings. I’ve had them on my Ibanez AC240 for just a couple weeks but I’m blown away! They started unremarkable (in the best sense of course) but have opened up to a nice, full, vibrant sound. They don’t feel coated, but they don’t feel fully natural either which I love. Best of both worlds! I’ve been using your string cleaner with them as well and I’m convinced these will last a good long while before needed a swap out. I bought both coated and uncoated versions of the Stringjoy acoustic strings in regular medium light. I now have these on 3 different guitars and plan on installing on 2 more. Have to say I don’t know how you do it but the tension on these strings seems different than anything else I’ve ever used. They just seem “comfortable†and sound fantastic. They’re pricey but worth it. Only con I can think of is they’re a bit noisy when sliding but I’m sure I’ll get used to that.David M

I've used Thomastik Flats on several guitars and basses (in appropriate gauges for different ones) for decades now. They are expensive, but also last a very long time with reasonable care so still deserve 'value-for-money' rating. Superb feel when playing, and to my ears and taste (bit of a jazzer) very good sound too. Once bridge saddles appropriately adjusted (they seem to need less end-correction than others) intonation is great. Highly recommended.JHS, C. i. S.

In 20 years of playing, I've broken plenty of strings right out of the package. The other reviewer must not change his strings much. I discovered flat wound strings several years ago, and I will never go back. Thomasik flat wounds are infinitely more comfortable on the fingers than standard strings. The first time I played them, I got a perfect vintage 60s sound that I had been trying to get out of other strings for a lifetime. Use them on a Strat and my SG. Highly recommend this brand of flat wound strings. You the man, Thomasik Infeld.Jeff

I tried these last year to see if they were worth the extra price. They are!!! I have had three sets now and I am about to order another for a new Jazz guitar I just got. One set went to my Son who plays a vintage ES-175. The feel, sound and the durability are better than anything else I have tried. And they say their special material at the top of the strings helps them stay in tune longer. They are the only flats I will be buying in the future and I recommend them.wscott336
