Coming from a 12 year old soldering pencil, I can tell you that this soldering station is well worth the price. This iron heats up fast, has an intuitive interface for making refined adjustments to the heat and tip changing is a breeze. The one thing I was a little annoyed with at first was the standby time – after X minutes, it automatically cools down in order to prevent the iron from overheating or staying hot for too long. The default time on it seems to have been 2 minutes – which was too short of a time for me, while working with small wires. But the standby time is adjustable, and after a small modification to about 5 minutes, all was good.ImpressiveNerd

Since involving myself in Radio Control electric planes, all my soldering jobs were done by my Local Hobby Shop. They stopped doing that and I was left without a solution. My requirements involved components with a wire size from 10-14AWG for large batteries and barrel connectors that range from 3.0-4.0mm diameters of gold-plated material. Too expensive to screw up! Especially when some plugs are encased in a silicone housing. Apply excessive heat and they will melt to the point where they become distorted and not safe to use. The LHS uses the Hakko 951 which they use on a near daily basis. A step down from that is the FX888D-23BY. After 2 months of usage, it has turned out to be a great choice. It is easy to use and amazingly effective. It makes my soldering jobs look like I am a pro. No more wasted connectors, and no more frustration. I am totally satisfied with TEquipment's price for this great little machine which is a complete soldering station for my needs. It didn't take me long to figure out how to get it going. This was a huge upgrade from my cheap 10$ Amazon soldering iron. Being able to adjust the temps accurately helps with not damaging the components you are working with. Also the station is well made and very convenient to use while working with the iron. Pleased with reliability – had it several years. You get what you pay for. I recommend. I’ve had two of a different brand but cheaper, under $20. Similar layout of controls and function, etc. Though I’m just a hobbyist mostly making RCA & XLO interconnects for my systems, just a few months after purchase, nothing more frustrating have your most important tool of the process just quit w/out warning. Good like finding replacement tips that fit properly. The Weller brand are hard to find, expensive, and the cheap no-names don't fit snug, so you won't get proper heat transfer. This will leave you frustrated, wondering why you're getting bad solder joints, or sitting there waiting minutes at a time for the solder to melt. Good station for beginners or once-in-a-while use, but beyond that, I can't recommend it.
I could have spent more and get a better product, but for a hobbyist, this is good enough. The iron takes a little longer to heat up than the one minute they say it takes. I like to have an on/off switch and a heat dial. It only comes with one tip and Weller branded tips are hard to find. They put 4 little rubber pads underneath but they don't even touch the table. Useless. I stuck a piece of rubber under to keep it from sliding. It gets the job done and it's not too expensive so, all in all, a decent buy.Normand223

I bought this soldering iron as soon as I knew it existed. I have probably 15 other M12 tools and roughly 20 batteries. It has worked well for me until recently when the plastic retaining collar failed and is not available as a replacement part. Perhaps Milwaukee should offer a revised part made of a better, more heat resistant material. I will not be replacing this tool out of my pocket, at least not with the same thing. I really like this soldering iron. You can't beat the convenience, and it heats up well enough for the toughest automotive connections, and is fine enough for my HAM radio work. My only disappointment was that recently when soldering some 10 gauge wire to an alligator clip for a jumper wire, I noticed that the plastic collet that the outer element screws into had started melting, and the outer element was bending to almost a 45 degree angle! I turned it off and gently moved it back to the correct position before the plastic cooled, but the thread in the plastic collet is now pretty much shot, and I am worried it will be weaker now, and just melt again. I would have expected some sort of heat resistant material in this critical fitting, but appears not. I didn't have it on for more that maybe 10-15 mins, so I am now turning it on for just a few minutes and turning it off between processes, which is painful waiting for it to reheat and use unnecessary battery power.18tillidie
I haven't had mine melt yet, but I am nervous. This is a great tool, IF IT WORKS! Support folks, try to get a statement from the product team about this. A big piece of buying into a tool ecosystem is knowing the company is standing behind its product. This has been a problem for 2+ years and there is ZERO communication from the company. IT IS REALLY BAD BUSINESS!!!! The product team owned up to the problem with the "improved" Impact driver they discontinued. Just tell us the issue, anything we can do to mitigate it, and when a fixed replacement should be available, that is it! When they are done with that, have them do the same for the backpack sprayer! I love most of my Milwaukee tools, I don't expect perfection or infinite tool life, but I DO expect communication and OWNING the mistakes. Otherwise why wouldn't we buy Ryobi or Harbor Freight???? This soldering iron did not even last me a year! The black harden plastic section gets brittle with heat (normal usage) and then the small tabs break off leaving it in 23 pieces. The tip constantly comes loose and most constantly be tightened with pliers. The heating element gets corroded with use and the temperature is then way off. For the record, I have been soldering since 1979 when I was NASA certified for high reliability soldering and military certified for soldering of electrostatic sensitive devices. unfortunately, most of these things, like everything else,today, is made in China and are designed with 'embedded' weak points to ensure failure and resale. Just my two cents…the unit works great for me, and the price was right. The only annoying part is the unit is very light weight and the electrical cords used for both the iron connecting to the unit and from the unit to the wall outlet are extremely stiff. So when soldering and moving the iron, the station is sometimes moving around. Also, sometimes when putting the iron back into the holder you need to fight the cord from getting burned by the tip. Putting better quality cords that are softer and flexible would make a huge difference to me even if they had to charge a few bucks more.John
I bought it because I was using a pencil iron that accidentally touched a power cord and damaged it, I needed something safer that would keep the iron in a safe place when not being used. This fit the bill with it's elevated holder. I had a little trouble getting the tip to tin but after some use and effort it tinned fine. This certainly isnt the best out there, but for what you get its not too shabby. I would not purchase this for professional soldering jobs. The quality is just not that of Hakko or Weller. Im using this mainly for my RC hobby soldering jobs. I like that the temp is adjustable and also very bright and easy to read. It came with flux and a tip cleaner too which is a must have to keep your soldering iron in ship shape. The helping hands are a nice feature (if they worked) however, they arent very stable at all and just flop and rotate downwards. I tried to tighten the little nuts but they do nothing to keep the hands still. Not that big of a deal tho for the price. Overall I would recommend you really cant beat it for the price.bhink87
I am a professional work-at-home electronics technician with 40+ years of experience including 5 years as a top level Avionics Technician at a licensed FAA repair station. My current work requires soldering anything from tiny 26 gauge wire to soldering directly to the steel chassis of vintage car radios. To meet the changing demands, I generally use 3 to 4 different irons – a 30 watter for small stuff, a 50 watter on a variac for heat adjustability working with larger 16 gauge stranded wire, and finally a Weller 80 watter to power its way through mild corrosion and solder wires to a steel chassis. The 80 watter gets so hot that I keep he tip immersed in a solder pot to keep it from burning up. Based on the many favorable reviews on the X Tronic, I purchased two of them. I have to say that this is the most versatile iron I've ever used – and that includes all the fancy stuff available in the Avionics shop. The tip is small enough for even occasional SMD repairs, yet can be adjusted hot enough to solder wires to anything except the heaviest steel chassis I run into. The iron is ESD safe, VERY comfortable to hold for long periods of time, and the included tip cleaner material is a very welcome improvement in my work habits. Time will tell how long it lasts, but this iron comes with an amazing 3 YEAR warranty. Considering the price and how well it does the job, I would gladly pay to replace this iron once a year if necessary. Another nice feature is that it "goes to sleep" if not used for awhile, and fires right back up when you wipe the tip on the sponge (sensing the sudden change in temperature). The digital readout makes it easy to preset different amounts of heat, and it's only VERY rarely that I have to go to the Weller 80 watter because of its huge tip which powers it way through anything. I purchased one of these units from a different venue some time ago and liked it so much that I purchased a 2nd one from Wal-Mart. From what I have experienced so far (I have had my first one since April of 2016), this unit has worked for all of the soldering jobs I have done since I purchased my first unit. I haven't found any other brand anywhere near this price that has a Digital LED Temperature Display. 2) The soldering iron with this unit will accept X-Tronic, Hakko and Aoyue tips and X-Tronic has a good assortment of replacement tips on their website. 3) Side solder roll holder will hold a 1 lb. roll of solder. 4) Brass Sponge Tin with the cleaning flux at the bottom of it is a very nice addition. 5) A 75 Watt Soldering Iron – NICE – heats up to whatever temp you want in less than 10 seconds. 6) A 1 Year Guarantee including parts and labor – X-Tronic must trust in the quality of their products a lot! 7) 10 Minute Sleep Timer – Fantastic! 8) A Centigrade to Fahrenheit Switch – Excellent Feature. Since involving myself in Radio Control electric planes, all my soldering jobs were done by my Local Hobby Shop. They stopped doing that and I was left without a solution. My requirements involved components with a wire size from 10-14AWG for large batteries and barrel connectors that range from 3.0-4.0mm diameters of gold-plated material. Too expensive to screw up! Especially when some plugs are encased in a silicone housing. Apply excessive heat and they will melt to the point where they become distorted and not safe to use. The LHS uses the Hakko 951 which they use on a near daily basis. A step down from that is the FX888D-23BY. After 2 months of usage, it has turned out to be a great choice. It is easy to use and amazingly effective. It makes my soldering jobs look like I am a pro. No more wasted connectors, and no more frustration. I am totally satisfied with TEquipment's price for this great little machine which is a complete soldering station for my needs. It didn't take me long to figure out how to get it going. This was a huge upgrade from my cheap 10$ Amazon soldering iron. Being able to adjust the temps accurately helps with not damaging the components you are working with. Also the station is well made and very convenient to use while working with the iron. It comes.along with the wet cleaning sponge and also brass wire which will help to maintain the longevity of your tips. I bought this to replace a failing Metcal. I got used to the pencil hand-piece and couldn't bring myself to start soldering with the fat irons again. I have to say, this little unit is a dream. Nice shaped handle, heats up super fast, very flexible cable, reliable "sleep" function to take the heat down when you don't need it and hot enough to get most any job done. Plus other features suited to a production environment that I'll never use, but they are there. The quality cartridge rack, hand-piece cradle and tip cleaner were "icing on the cake." The cartridges for this unit are available at an amazing price (compared to the Metcal), which makes it easy to stock up and have a good assortment. The no-name cartridges for the unit work great, but they feel a little flimsy at the ceramic end. Just treat them well, and they work fine. The only con I have with the unit is the two part hand-piece. I tried just pushing the cartridge right into both parts at the same time (again, Metcal habit) but this unit has a lot more locking force on the cartridges. It can be done this way, but I felt like I would eventually break the hand-piece, and it's difficult to get the cartridge fully seated (and for that you will get an error code from the base.) But if you follow the directions, and snap the cartridge fully into the upper part and then snap that whole assembly into the handle, it works every time. I am by no means a professional. All my soldering consists of diy work and varies from repair to prototype projects for myself. I always just used an old soldering iron that was handed down to me. Well, that old iron finally failed. I never knew what I was missing or I would've pulled the trigger years ago. I've only had the Hakko FX-951 for a few days now, WOW, what a difference. The adjustable temp. is great. I read some reviews that complain about the buttons vs. a dial, I have had neither in the past so I can't see or understand what the big issue is with the buttons, they work fine. This unit is probably way overkill for my needs, but now I don't wish that I had something new. The iron has a great feel and is very light. There seem to be plenty of options for tips as well. I even did my first lead free project, this soldering station made that a breeze. My only regret is not buying sooner.Wade T.
I watched a great number of reviews for soldering stations and decided to settle with this one. It is amazing for the price! The user interface could be better and I probably would find it annoying if I was changing temperatures frequently but the interface is satisfactory for my application. It takes about 10-15 seconds to heat up to 600-700 F. The adjustable sleep timer is amazing. The ample number of tips available is another great feature. Finally picked one up, was not disappointed. Heats up plenty fast on 4S, holds heat just as well as my full size station, while being tiny and portable. Only complaint so far is that holding both buttons to turn it off is a bit of a pain, but I haven't looked at custom firmware yet and don't recall if that fixes it. I use a Weller WES51 analog for all my bench soldering. That is, until now. I've needed a more portable unit for years but never got around to buying one. A fixed-wattage 25 pencil iron ain't much. A fixed 40 is better, but an adjustable 60-watter. Now we're talking. Wish I had gotten it years ago. I use it for everything. Most of my soldering is low-temp, but this iron will also melt the higher-melting-point alloys as well. It heats up quickly and handles well.
