Best Seat For Playing Guitar (Jan 2023 Update)

I had to make major modifications to make this fit me. I'm 5' 8" 140 lbs. Owned mine for 2 years, but had to cut the legs 2 1/2" shorter, move the seat rest down and backwards a few inches, widen the footrest and remove the guitar rest. It's now fine for a 3 hour gig, but was HORRIBLE before!!! Strength and quality of materials, construction and padding are very good, but ergonomics are by some strangely built weirdo, unfortunately!! They need to redesign it to fit an average human!!!!! If they made it fit right, it's worth the cost. If you can't modify it as I have, buy something elseTim

I have been performing an acoustic set for sometime now and I have to lug a stand, stool, the guitar and I take a tablet for a cheat sheet and requests. This cuts most of my lugging in half and the seat is comfortable. I love the fact I can just bring 3 things to my gigs and have the peace of mind that I don't loose track of a stand or the stool. I mean seriously I would never forget my guitar but a guitar stand is easily misplaced or someone confiscates your stool and then the bar now has an extra stool and you left without your stool. These things may sound silly but when being a performing musician and not having people working for you keeping track of your stuff it's easy to have stuff go missing. This item molds two things into one and makes the gig easier and it's comfortable! So all around just a great product.dyerknight

Must have been designed for ppl at least 7 feet tall. Most of you will be cutting 2 or 3 inches off the legs. Most ppls feet do won't reach the floor and the foot rest are not appropriate height. That alone makes it very uncomfortable and renders it almost non usable. The back rest may be risky as it did snap off for at least one person and I found it to feel very unlikely of holding any of my weight. Also the back rest was not lined up when assembled at the factory and is off skew. Looks dumb. Could it be fixed without damaging? Maybe. The guitar rest do not hold an electric guitar on mine without it setting sideways and risking a fall. Can I bend them around to work? Maybe. I don't currently have an acoustic on hand to test. "I barely have a butt but still find this hard to get situated on. Very small seat. Hard and not comfortable. I never believed there could be so many issues with a simple chair. I may cut the legs and basically rebuild the rest of it and keep it, but I have to say it is nowhere near worth the price. Well made strong metal stool. This will take the weight of a large performer. Backrest is a bonus. I had researched a lot of stools and found this one to be the best price and value. Impressive looking on stage and gives a pro look as against 'just a chair' to sit on. Bit akward to take apart but it's a trade of for quality. I have a Grundorf chair of similar design that always makes my legs numb after sitting longer than 30 minutes. It has a small seat and not much padding. The OnStage adjustable throne is much more comfortable and very sturdy. There is more padding and it is a wider seat. I can use it without going numb. I have moved the Grundorf to my Church for playing in the worship group and I now use this chair for my personal performances and in home practice.KB

I play mandolin and both sit and stand while practicing and was tired of slumping in a regular chair. I found this chair on Musician's Friend, and it was well-reviewed and the price seemed right. Received it in good condition, put it together, I think correctly, but it feels a little wobbly. I've checked all the connections and can't find where one of the screws might be loose, so I sit on it with it kind of wobbly. I wish the connections were more solid. The chair also leans forward as other reviewers have noted. This is better than practicing in my old chair, but still not perfect. It's close, but not perfect. I would recommend it, but know that, for me at least, it's not a perfect solution. This chair arrived in fine condition and on time.Kendall

Works as it should great for acoustic sets and jammin at home. The guitar hanger on the back works good could be a little higher if you have a long bass it might just hang too low but other than that it's easy to put together and seems very sturdy hope it last a long time.Jim c.

Great seat. The way it's adjustable makes it great to use and easy to switch for another person if needed. Feels very strong and secure. This product is not for someone that plays guitar. It would be good for someone playing the cello. If the foot platform would extend forward a foot it would be great for a guitar player. So the chair with an added footstool works well for a guitar player. The cushions are comfortable, but smell like mothballs bad. Super strong mothball smell. After cleaning them 3 times and airing it out in the garage for 2 weeks the smell got better. It still smells like an old man at the nursing home.BRENT R

I don't know if they have a shorter version of this. Not as short as a regular chair, but something in berween. Regular chairs are not great when you use pedals and this one is a little uncomfortable for the back. I cut like 3 1/2" and I think is perfect like that. Looks cool, went together easy but the legs are not even close to even. It teeters like crazy! I've tried to shim it but I'm just chasing my tail. I bought it with rewards so I have like 10 bucks into it and it's not worth the time to return it. I'll likely saw the legs even myself and then it will be a perfect stool.Ken M

Basic chromed-steel tubing stool with a padded, rotating seat. Nice looking red & black Fender logo on the seat. Has a ring around legs about 10 up from floor that makes a nice foot rest when playing guitar. Does take some assembly but all required hardware & good instructions are supplied. They even provide simple tools used for assembly. Tip – hang on to the tools. It will need to be retightened a couple of times after initial assembly.leftyfader

The good: small, portable, can run off batteries. The wireless connectivity is really nice. Sounds decent for what it is. The bad: The interface on the unit itself and the app are confusing to say the least, and you are pretty limited in the use of effects. The ugly: all those free Katana patches being posted on the Boss site? Incompatible. All the patches for regular Boss Katana amps WILL NOT WORK on this unit. Thanks for that Boss.Alexander

Overall: I may be mis-reading the manual but I've yet to figure out how to keep the wireless transmitter charged. I'm not new at this having gotten Line 6's wireless transmitters when they first arrived on the scene. They were easy to use and worked as advertised. While I am a huge Roland/Boss fan, I'm thinking they may have missed the mark in the "ease of use" category on the Katana Air. From a sound perspective, the amp, when plugged into a wall socket sounds great; just what you'd expect from a Katana amp. And when the transmitter is fully charged, the same can be expected. The problem arises when trying to figure out how to keep it charged. When running the amp on batteries only, this seems this seems to be problematic in that the amp stops charging the transmitter when the batteries are low. The problem is you don't know the transmitter is dead until you try and use it.My most predictable approach is to plug in the amp with the provided DC cable and do my charging while the amp is "hard-wired" to the juice coming from a wall socket.Once the transmitter is fully charged, in this manner, I can disconnect the amp and run it on a fresh set of batteries. This will afford you a "temporary" wireless operation. The transmitter that I received didn't have any where's near the claimed lifespan. I'd be curious to see how other's experience with the Katana Air played out. I will keep fiddling with the KA and if I discover what it takes to make it truly wireless, I'll get back to you in a follow up review. Strangely I did keep this item, hoping for a downloadable software cure.There is a nice free ap that accompanies the KA…..It allows you to change all of the amp's audio settings and to download free patch sets. This works well with my iPhone 7+.Martin

I've been seeking a modern, portable, reliable practice amp that can satisfy BOTH Acoustic and Electric guitars since Line 6 introduced their Amplifi series. I loved the Amplifi's techie saturated concept but no matter how bad I wanted it to work… it was always a low-fidelity 'noise' amp first without the ability to produce clear, hi-fidelity sound for either my acoustic or classical guitars. Designing an amp that can accurately reproduce hi-fidelity, low distortion sound begins with a good designed, quality build and above average components. As the old proverb states, "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear", you can build a noisy amp but don't ever expect it to reproduce quality sound. Amplifi is the sow's ear. I thought about testing their newer Amplifi 30 but after many bad experiences testing a 75 and reading that I was not alone … I lost all confidence that they could do HiFi right. The Katana Air checks many of my must-have boxes and it worked without a hitch. It was designed as a small practice amp and not a single solution for all your gigging needs. Adding in the convenience features like smart-on and multiple wireless features that include power/updating/tuning/modeling/backing tracks/guitar, makes this the practice amp I have been waiting a long timefor. 5 stars because basically this is a solid stool with quick and easy adjustment to the seat and the footrest. Substantial firm padding on the seat and a robust steel frame. As another reviewer has stated, the grips on the footrest slide off easily which is a shame as the rest of the construction is very high quality. I went to Sam Ash to look for a hollow-body bass, because the bass I've been playing for decades is getting heavy and starting to hurt my back when I play. I didn't like the sound of any of the basses I tried until I got into a price range that was too high for me. I was about to leave, when I realized that the stool I was using to try the basses was really nice, and taking the weight off of my back (and feet), so I asked the salesperson if they sold the stools there. He said they did and they had one left (other than the one or two in use on the floor), so I bought it. It's very sturdy and easily adjustable — the height of the seat and and back rest. They come off easily and it folds up (so that it's relatively flat). The only downside is that it's kind of heavy to carry, but that's because it's so solid — so it's a trade-off. I would recommend this stool. (And it's a lot less expensive than a good bass.)David

I shopped long and hard for the perfect chair for my home guitar practice studio. This is it! Many reviews of this one and others complained about fit and the comfort of the cushion. I am 6'4, like to sit up straight with back support and my right foot up on the footrest. This QuikLok fits the bill and after a couple months the seat and back cushions are still like new. I don't see them getting worn out or uncomfortable as some reviewers said. The seat came in good condition (although the box looked like it took a beating on the way from China) and took no more than 5 minutes to set up. It is very adjustable. It is heavy and probably not want you want to be carrying around a lot but that does make it solid and comfortable for playing.Lawrence

I've been wanting a dedicated guitar stool for a long while. This particular model is often found in the Guitar Center in my area and I've always liked they way it feels to sit on them. The reviews were daunting as many seem to have great difficulty assembling them. (I had more trouble opening the package that contains the hardware then the actual assemble of the stool itself.) The secret is to alternatively tighten each screw with the others. There is absolutely no need to physically bend the legs. After you have the legs secured to the swivel part of the seat, slide the "O" ring over the top. Slide the screws through the ring and legs to keep it in place. Place the washer and locking nuts and hand tightened slightly. Starting with one set of legs, use the included wrenches to tighten the screws. Get a few turns on one side, then turn it around and do the same. Use the threads of the screws as a guide and make sure no one side is tightened more than the other. The legs will bend on their own. Once you're finished with one set, move on to the other and repeat. If done correctly, you will have made almost zero physical (or mental) effort and shouldn't have issues of the stool being "wobbly". I posted a video on YouTube (post assembly).Mr. Fuzzleupagus

This chair is better than other brands because the foot rim is LOWER by one inch. This makes all the difference in the world for a guitarist. Also, the leather padded cover makes it easier to play on longer gigs. It's also smaller in circumference and that makes it easier to load in the car! TIP WILL IMPROVE STABILITY: Add slider pads to the legs. They stick on and easy to install. You can find them in hardware stores. See photo.Steve

Honestly, this chair should be half the cost. However, it's the only one I've tried that is comfortable. It's better than the ones with printed logos on them because those don't have enough padding and their shinny surfaces could get annoying on your skin or slippery for your pants. People sometimes complain about the chair being uneven and rocking after assembled…. They probably didn't read the instructions. Min rocks about a mm, but when you sit on it, it's gone and even that will probably disappear in no time. The trick is to not tighten all the screws until the end, so you can adjust the parts as a whole. It basically says that right in the instructions.christiannoir

I play keyboards in two bands, and I bought one of these because its height could be adjusted higher than the drum thrones that I've been using as my keyboard seat. I liked it so much that I bought two more. The range of height adjustability is excellent, the seat cushion is firm (but comfortable for me over a 3 1/2 hour gig), so will hopefully not deteriorate too quickly, and the cushion is shaped in a useful way (at least for me). I have found them useful around the house as well; again, the height works much better in my ammo hand-loading room than the office chair I was using previously. It seems very sturdy and well-built as well (I can't use normal keyboard benches, as I'm too active on stage and break them). It folds up very quickly and compactly. The only downside, IMO, is their weight compared to a normal keyboard bench, but it's not any heavier than the drum throne it replaced.pigger

Bought the seat for a portable combo organ, as feet do not extend past the seat into the pedalboard, and because I am currently at the 250 lb range. Seat is very sturdy, although a bit heavy and difficult to adjust. it looks nice, however, and may become easier to adjust after it gets set up and torn down more. The frame is built solid, like a tank, very sturdy. Nevertheless, its weight is fine. The set-up really is rapid, easily under half a minute; 10 seconds is doable. It's user-friendly and intuitive. The "weakest link in the chain" is cushioned, padded, vinyl-covered seat, but still, quite acceptable; simply that is not so "industrial strength" like rest of unit. I needed 23" seat height for my piano keyboard's situation upon cabinet furniture at home. The bench height adjustment co-operatively clicked in to just that exact amount. What an improvement, and excellent fix! The range of height options is most useful. Before, I sat on books to boost my posture so I didn't have to be reaching up to keyboard from elbows. I should have gotten this bench long ago. "It's a Chevy, not a Ford." Printed music storage inside piano benches is nice feature, but, not a deal breaker here. Stool sets up quickly and folds up for easy transport. Is also tall enough for a 6' person to use with organ pedals. The seat cushion compresses to nothing with minimal effort suggesting it's made of poor quality foam. Not super comfy at the end of a long gig but it gets the job done. I'll probably reupholster it at some point with better padding. I think a thinner pad, with better foam would have been a better choice.Ohnepiston

I needed a guitar stool for my home studio / practice room, so naturally I turned to Musician's Friend. I saw there were a variety of options and a range of prices. As a value shopper who's searching for the most bang for my buck, and willing to pay a little more to hit the sweet spot, I decided on the Gibson® model. Part of the decision was based on the Gibson® reputation for quality. Figured it had to be at least as nice as the ones provided for customers to use at my local guitar shop. I also thought this stool had an elegant, simple look and seemed less "novelty"-like than some of the other options (e.g., a sports team or beer company). I mean, a top guitar company should make a top guitar-playing stool, right? As it turns out, I was misguided. It's a cheap stool with poor quality control. I received the stool as expected, with typical excellent MF service and eagerly started to assemble it as soon as I got home. Unfortunately, I soon realized the crossbars (that form the legs) were defective. The center hole where they meet was off-center and you could see a mis-punch in the center where the hole was supposed to be. Of course, I didn't realize that until after I had already combined the pieces and couldn't get the round parts to attach properly (more like an oval) and couldn't attach the swivel mount. I was disappointed, but these things happen. MF graciously accepted the return (with prepaid shipping) and arranged for an immediate replacement. I asked for a new Gibson® stool because I figured it was a fluke and still thought this model was a good idea for the reasons stated above. When stool #2 arrived, I quickly assembled it with no problem at all (hooray). Unfortunately, the stool wobbled a bit as the legs were not exactly even. Didn't wobble when sitting on it though, so maybe I'm willing to overlook it. Well now, after having it for a week and doing several practice sessions on the seat, I've concluded this needs to go back. The 24" stool is a good height for playing and the footrest is nice, but that's about it. I'm not a large man, and yet I find the seat becomes uncomfortable very quickly, after about 20 minutes I need to stand up. I could not use this to practice, or work at my DAW for any particular length of time. Padding is minimal. Plus, the "professional grade" vinyl covering really isn't particularly nice. It looks too shiny, stays crumpled a bit for a while when you get up, the surface is a bit crinkly in the light (easy to see because of the glossy finish), and the logo has some imperfections (couple of dark bits on the white portion). I hadn't noticed on the first (defective) stool, because I never got to the point in the assembly of unwrapping the "cushion". I think I'd be willing to overlook any one of these things by itself, but taken together, it kills the deal, especially when I paid a little extra for it. I'll need to find another solution. As much as I love my Gibson® guitar, I would not recommend this item, and hope Gibson® can either stick to making instruments or be more careful about licensing its brand.Zlur

This stool with back support is the most comfortable "stage chair" I've ever used. The seat is shaped and comfortable. The back support is simple and perfect. The seat angle is easy to adjust (the back support moves with the seat, so heads up). The stool height is easy to adjust – especially with the pneumatic spring. The foot rest is easily adjusted. This stool functions in the manner I had hoped. It has stayed in one place since I put it together so I have no road test to review. The seat covering is black cloth, not leather as advertised. Once your back's gone, there is no way back. Like much of K&M's gear, this seems expensive until you actually use it, …in my case for long hours spent at the mixing console in various venues. Whether using the foot-pegs at maximum (nearly on your feet) height, or set lower with your feet on the floor, this stool's sculptured saddle discourages the dreaded slump that's so often the precursor to pain. At the end of a long day, a quick flip-flop flat and it's ready to go. Part of the decision was based on the Gibson® reputation for quality. Figured it had to be at least as nice as the ones provided for customers to use at my local guitar shop. I also thought this stool had an elegant, simple look and seemed less "novelty"-like than some of the other options (e.g., a sports team or beer company). I mean, a top guitar company should make a top guitar-playing stool, right? As it turns out, I was misguided. It's a cheap stool with poor quality control. I received the stool as expected, with typical excellent MF service and eagerly started to assemble it as soon as I got home. Unfortunately, I soon realized the crossbars (that form the legs) were defective. The center hole where they meet was off-center and you could see a mis-punch in the center where the hole was supposed to be. Of course, I didn't realize that until after I had already combined the pieces and couldn't get the round parts to attach properly (more like an oval) and couldn't attach the swivel mount. I was disappointed, but these things happen. MF graciously accepted the return (with prepaid shipping) and arranged for an immediate replacement. I asked for a new Gibson® stool because I figured it was a fluke and still thought this model was a good idea for the reasons stated above. When stool #2 arrived, I quickly assembled it with no problem at all (hooray). Unfortunately, the stool wobbled a bit as the legs were not exactly even. Didn't wobble when sitting on it though, so maybe I'm willing to overlook it. Well now, after having it for a week and doing several practice sessions on the seat, I've concluded this needs to go back. The 24" stool is a good height for playing and the footrest is nice, but that's about it. I'm not a large man, and yet I find the seat becomes uncomfortable very quickly, after about 20 minutes I need to stand up. I could not use this to practice, or work at my DAW for any particular length of time. Padding is minimal. Plus, the "professional grade" vinyl covering really isn't particularly nice. It looks too shiny, stays crumpled a bit for a while when you get up, the surface is a bit crinkly in the light (easy to see because of the glossy finish), and the logo has some imperfections (couple of dark bits on the white portion). I hadn't noticed on the first (defective) stool, because I never got to the point in the assembly of unwrapping the "cushion". I think I'd be willing to overlook any one of these things by itself, but taken together, it kills the deal, especially when I paid a little extra for it. I'll need to find another solution. As much as I love my Gibson® guitar, I would not recommend this item, and hope Gibson® can either stick to making instruments or be more careful about licensing its brand.Zlur
