Reviews:
My guitar teacher taught me with this book. It teaches you how to tune your guitar and the proper position in wich to play your guitar. It guides you through basic and big-sounding open chords and strumming/picking techniques. You even begin to cover reading music! That is the music industry music, folks, not just tabs. Not many other "Level 1" books provide that. It is a small, yet very versatile book. Obviously, it can be used as a teaching guide, though I strongly believe it can be a self-instruction book as well. The instructions are clear and they give you some popular songs to play to keep you motivated.NilGuitar
Not sure how to some of the music in the book is correctly notated according to professional musicians or music teachers that recommended it. For example, page 12 shows Ode to Joy begins in C but it is really E that is shown in the music notation. Hal Leonard Books have been around for years but this is the first copy I have ever owned where the music lesson read improperly.Relearning Classical Guitar

The Guy can Play. He (they) are also marketing masters. Unfourtnatly it has more to do with sales than actually wanting to teach you anything. There are far better Methods on the Market and of Course Don't Forget the Ulimate accessory: The Real Life Teacher. If you've ever seen the Infomercials and you say, "Whoa I didn't know it was that easy!". Well, it's not. To Play Guitar Takes real Work. Not to mention most of the Real Important Stuff You Really Need to Know to Learn an Instrument isn't even touched upon. Then again that kind of Real World Stuff Don't Sell Books/DvDs. EASY! SELLS! Easy, is also an untruth. And if you need more proof just read the reviews of a couple of beginners right here in this review section. Then consider the Infomercial where he pulls a complete beginner (never touched a Guitar before)up on stage and in a few seconds he's playing away. Now, why is it that this person (who's never touched a guitar before) is playing away in a few seconds, while our reviewing beginners are struggling to catch on. Well, that's because our struggling beginners are telling you something Esteban is not: The Truth. Playing takes work and time. Anyone who's played and taught as long as I have know what a joke his whole marketing system is. Sorry, I've nothing nice to say about the guys whole system and seriously save yourself some cash and get a qualified teacher and some real study materials that focus on things you need to know, such as How to Practice etc.clittlern1

I always believed that my friends who can't read a single note of music and play by ear soley were born with a special gift. Through constant practice, patience, and a willingness to follow the instructions given on the CD's that comprise MJS Complete Guitar by Ear, I truly believe that I am learning to play by ear. As a person with a disability that caused me to lose all my prior guitar training and music from my brain, this tool opens avenues to learning in an completely different manner that is helping to re-wire my brain musically and in other aspects of brain function. The encouragement to not listen ahead and to not move on until you've mastered each portion of each lesson allows me the extra time I need to truly "learn" to "hear" guitar music (and now all music) in a totally different way. While patience isn't usually one of my virtues, I'm grateful for the approach taken in this set of CD's. I'm confident once I complete the course I will be capable of listening to any piece of music and have the ability to play it by ear. Thank you for creating a product that lets people who thought they would only ever be able to play music by sight reading on the guitar a mechanism for expanding every aspect of their musical skills on the guitar. I find myself taking notes, listening to the section I'm working one all the time, going back to the beginning re-listening to what I've learned, and transposing what I learn by ear into actual standard musical notation. The exercises suggested in each lesson I tend to use to warm-up not only my ear, but my actual fingerwork and technique at the same time. A whole new world of music seems to integrate itself throughout my brain and I'm going to have the best of all worlds, I have no doubt, once I complete this entire course. I cannot believe the difference in how I listen to anything the slightest bit musical. The author has my mind mesmerized and immersed in all kinds of guitar & non-guitar music and it's happening as if by magic. There isn't really any magic it a wonderful benefit of this gifted teacher and method.MT
I'm an adult beginner on the guitar. I enjoy learning to use the fretboard directly by ear (if only I had started into the piano by playing by ear!) without the burden of translating musical notation into tones on an instrument that is still unfamiliar. My advice to fellow adult beginners: (1) Do each of Mr. Sternal's exercises exactly as he describes them, nothing more and nothing less, and no faster than you can consistently produce good tones. (2) Master each of his small steps before going on to the next one, being patient with yourself and trusting the order of skills through which he directs you. I'll move on to notation (guitar tablature and "standard" notation) only after I own the fretboard!Steve-.ED1V

Good for someone with a little experience in reading notes and music who wants to see if the guitar is something they have a knack for. Starts out with readings notes, where the notes are on the guitar, and progresses through practicing chords, scales, and strumming techniques. Lays a good foundation for more advanced learning.Charles, C
I kicked around playing guitar in college many years ago with only some tips from my accomplished, guitar playing college roomate. I never developed with the instrument. Many years later I knew I needed help if I was really going to learn how to play. Hal Leonard's book is certainly a challenge for me but it is paying off big-time. I'm learning so much on how to tune, play the guitar, and read music, all for the first time in my life. I found it a challenge at first, but as I discipline my mind and my fingers I am advancing far beyond what I knew in my college days. The book will help you if you match its complexity with an equal amount of determination. But once you learn the first few pages reading music and playing guitar becomes much easier and such a joy. It is a good book.bobemagee

It is a little too physiological in nature for even an aspiring guitar player to comprehend.marshaw52
Book assumes the reader is already familiar with standard music notation, reading for guitar in first position, and has some familiarity with basic classical guitar technique. You don't need "much", but you need "something", and it will probably take a complete novice a few weeks/months to work up to this. Still, this is an excellent primer on basic classical guitar technique of tremendous value to a new (or even less than new) player. Goes into some depth on not just how to execute the different techniques, but WHY, including some historical context, as well as discussion of specific issues of physical anatomy that affect play. There is more depth here than Aaron Shearer's (also excellent, BTW) introductory books, plus it approaches the material from a more modern perspective, building on Shearer's (and others) work. Professor Berg has spent a great deal of his professional time both teaching, and teaching others HOW to teach classical guitar, and it shows here. In my opinion, at a fraction of the cost of an individual classical guitar lesson, this is a "must have" for any new student and well worth the price.autopsy-doc
