1. Fundamentals Of Guitar: A Workbook For Beginning, Intermediate, Or Advanced Students [Book]
Product Details:
This book is designed to be useful for guitarists at any skill level. beginners can use it as an introduction to the foundational concepts of the instrument, intermediate players can use it for training and theoretical work, and advanced players can explore the sections on advanced theory, extended technique and the exhaustive tables of melodic and rhythmic possibilities. it is divided into two parts: pitch and rhythm. part 1 (pitch) begins with the properties of string, harmonics, and tuning systems. it then moves methodically through pitch information, beginning with locating all versions of a single pitch, building pentatonic, heptatonic, and all possible symmetrical scales. this is followed by a study of intervals, with all possible locations of every two pitches, and a long study that moves through every possible fingering of three pitches, with a series of exercises to master triadic syntax. part 1 closes with a study of four-pitch structures and complete tables that show all possible pitch sets in circular visual notation. part 2 (rhythm) begins with a complete course in symmetrical picking, a method based on drum rudiments that builds control in the picking hand through an exhaustive variety of movements. the focus of this section is building a strong rhythmic foundation, with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, speed, dynamics, and groove. it is followed by a study of legato playing, working with ornaments and slides. the study of playing with fingers on multiple strings takes up the remainder of the book. this begins with the study of pulse against pulse, playing two simultaneous tempos. the book concludes with a study of polyrhythm, playing one rhythm against another. plain english is used as much as possible to describe theoretical concepts, and hundreds of illustrations were made for the book as an aid to those who either don't speak english or prefer to think visually. this approach is designed to be inclusive and to promote creative practice. the main idea of the book is described in this passage (page 154): even in this small area there is a lot of material, potentially a lifetime of study. the amount of information can feel overwhelming to students at any level. for this reason, the book is designed for self-directed practice, with an emphasis on what the player could do, rather than what the player should do. the principle is to develop your own learning process, rather than following someone else's. the ability to make choices is essential in finding a personal approach to the instrument. pick and choose the studies that seem interesting – there should be enough variety to accommodate a wide range of personalities. if any particular concept or exercise has been useful as the starting point for a new creative direction, then the book has done its job. its purpose is not to push any dogma, method, or style, but to open the door to options for guitarists of any background that are looking for new perspectives.

Reviews:
… the book causes you time and time again to step outside yourself and get out of your own way…… there is a bit of dry humor accompanying every few pages and / or new sections. This is a replacement copy (my second one) apparently when I lend it out it never comes back ! That is a testament to its content….jazzguitar7
It is a good book, with some good exercises, but the 'hands off' approach is a little too vague at times, and I can't fully understand why someone would reiterate so many times that a method book does not have a 'method'. You will certainly need to 'know your stuff' as many points are not introduced nor explained including some author-made abbreviations that are a little head-scratching for a while. For the 'advancing guitarists' it provides a take it or leave it reference manual for some exercises and approaches to practice sessions, as well as some rather intense sightreading of complex chords in different tunings.roo_aboo

i dont mind buying a used copy but this was a ripoff. The original 3 volumes has 424 pages, this one has 127 pages (only volume 1) and they are photocopies. Not happy! I was deceivedchrisnatana
This book (levels 1-3) is like a couple years of college level training. However, there are too many duet pieces which is crazy if you are learning by yourself. Therefore, you need to supplement with other materials. As far as theory and technique goes this book is hard to beat.jayafink
The kind of book that I have been looking to find for years. After reading many instructional guitar books and often finding the material not practical and draining, this book finally provided the tools necessary to improve my abilities through practical exercises and intuitive design . A very good book for sight-reading (starting from the bare basics) which is detrimental for any serious musician. The Unscholarly Scholar

Reviews:
This software is nothing like the piano software. It doesn't give you feedback on how well you played a piece. I don't think that it is really intermediate learning as it has stuff that I would consider for beginner's. There is also a delay from when you play a note and it registers that you play that note. Another thing I don't like is they need to show which finger to use to play each note above the tab or music notation. They do show the notes and the fingers you use to play on a fret board but it goes to fast to see it. I'm hoping I can get something out of this software maybe I can learn some scales. Read exactly what the software does before you buy it!toms musicians

Fine for reference purposes. Already knew illustrations were poor but was only 7.scottsid2011
This book has good information but theres one big problem. Look at the blue and red wire but, my book is in black and white. You can still figure it out but, would be a lot more easier it was like the original copy, in colorjesse195592
Finally a textbook/diagram guide of visual explanatory steps to successfully complete numerous basic and custom upgrade wiring modifications. This book is so complete that it will describe and answer mostly every question in your mind about the care, maintenance and installation of hardware and all electrical components through photos, diagrams and text. One of the many excellent features in this book is how it explains the steps and offers special tips that helps eliminate any confusion. My favorite wiring upgrade is the 5 way switch with 7 sounds for 3 single pickups with `One Master/250k Volume/Pot` — One Master/250k/Push/Pull/ Pot for neck on/off configuration —- A must buy if you want to learn the right way. This book will eliminate the annoyance and frustration of a `RE-DO-OVER`minodo1

I bought this book for my 10 y.o. daughter. She said she cannot use DVD because the video lessons on it are "too fast" for her, not enough explanations. Otherwise this is a good book.Oaleks
