These Boveda packs for instruments are amazing! Although they can be a bit pricey, they really are the best way to protect your expensive wood instruments. I used to use Oasis humidifiers, which were great, but need refilled constantly and ran out of water fast. They also needed to be removed if humidity was high in the surrounding area because they could cause humidity to go too high. These Boveda packs remove the guess work and humidify when humidity is low, and are dehumidifying when humidity is high. They last longer than the tradition humidifiers that use distilled water, lifetime does depend on how dry/wet the surrounding area is though. Mine usually last 3-6 months in the spring and summer and 1-3 months in the dry fall and winter. I put 3 of these in my Taylor case at a time, 2 go into the sound hole using the Boveda guitar holder and 2 goes up under the neck. Using a Bluetooth humidity sensor, I can track the humidity in the guitar and since I added these, the humidity has been at a stable 48%-50% for 11 months in a row!!!! Definitely recommend if you have a hard guitar case that will maintain humidity levels. If youre using a soft case, these may not last long at all, so something else may be a better option so you dont waste these packs since they arentsuper cheap. If you have a wood instrument and a good case, these are the best way of protecting it from over/under humidifying and I will ALWAYS use them on my Taylor guitars to avoid irreversible damage!!colbergd

I've been in the music industry professionally playing Trombone and horn section for 25 years. But the Guitar world still feels a bit alien to me As a complete novice, learning Acoustic Guitar for the first time, I'm starting from scratch with accessories and strings, straps to finger exercisers. I know a fair few Guitarists playing Electric, Electro Acoustic and Bass and they ALL recommend Planet Waves now D'addario. I can understand why! The 2 way Humidipak system is genius in its simplicity. 3 packets of Water Gel like substance that you put in cloth bags. Hang 1 of the bags over your strings into Sound Hole. The other bag placed under Headstock in the case. Easy. Totally mess free, no water near the Guitar or case. Takes a minute to setup. Looks great too. You don't need to loosen the strings to use the Humidipak. What sold it to me is the 2 way process. Not only does it add humidity to your Guitar and case, it takes it out too. So there's little chance over doing the humidity and making your Guitar too wet. Which I'm told is as bad as over drying. The packs last from 2 to 6 months apparently and then you buy refils. If your Guitar is over dry there are stronger Humidipaks available that either precondition or help restore. Then you switch to regular packs. Yes it's a little costly but if your Guitar is valuable to you or in money this is peace of mind. Especially as most insurance companies do not cover for over dry guitars apparently!William G.
This is an excellent product but a little common sense goes a long way. If you live in a very dry climate (e.g., Arizona, where I lived for many years) you'll need supplemental humidification. When I lived in Phoenix I used a room humidifier, an Oasis case humidifier, and Humidipak. On the other hand, if you live in a very humid climate (e.g., Houston, where I live now), your Humidipak pouches may never dry out because they're absorbing moisture, but they still need to be replaced every six months. I've never experienced a leakage problem in 10 years using Humidipak, but it certainly could happen. On balance, I think the small risk is worth it. Every solution for the humidity problem has its limitations, but in my opinion this is the best bet.Mark
I must've gotten a bad batch, the dehumidification does NOT get the airspace into the 40-60% range. I tested in freezer bag, some 70% basement air, two hygrometers and a bare humidipak (without the cloth cover). Within 2 hours the airspace in the bag was brought to 65%, impressive, however it did not go any further the rest of the day. It looked like it was hovering around 65%, which is contrary to the advertising. These were two salt-tested hygrometers to measure. So I will have to augment with silica gel packs to get it in range, the humidipak would then compete with the silica gel to keep the air from drying out too much hopefully in the 50% range. This is assuming the humidipak humidification function is working better than its de-humification function.Richard

This is a wonderful product that I have had the chance to use now for a number of years. I had to purchase another, due to the recent move to the SW U.S. and needed more humidity. I bought a used Breedlove D25/SRe guitar and case in like-new condition, at my local Guitar Center about one month ago. This guitar sells brand new for $1000 at GC right now and is well worth protecting!! Breedlove recommends this humidifier and they know what good quality is! This kit comes with easy-to-follow instructions of what AND what NOT to do for best results and longest life. The hygrometer is easy to operate and read. Soon I will be buying two more humidifiers for my other guitars (I can move the hygrometer from case to case easily enough).
A luthier recommended the Oasis to me, so I tried one, and now I have four. Three OH-1's and one OH-6 case humidifier. These are so simple and easy to use. They keep the guitar case (and guitar) at about 50% RH with no issues. The best thing about these is that they use distilled water, and refill crystals are inexpensive. The packet style humidifiers work, but are way too expensive if you have several guitars.

I've reviewed these several times before but my HO hasn't changed. I spend a lot of time traveling with many of my guitars stored at home. I know of no better way to ensure the proper humidity environment for my stringed instruments. Until now, I've really only used them with my acoustics and my ukulele. i started using this system a couple of years ago. at a gig a strap on my guitar bag slipped loose – my guitar (taylor 310 kce) hit the floor (ouch!) as a result there wasa large area on the top, about 1 to 2 inches square that was chipped loose. i contacted taylor, and set it up to send the axe to them for repair – they did a beautiful job, and there is barely a scar along the edging where the guitar took the brunt of the drop. while i had it there i had them perform one of their total maintenance services – neck adjustment, new nut, fret adjustment if necessary, and re-humidification. when i got it back i wanted to maintain the proper humidity level, and this system seemed heaven sent. i used to get my replacements from my local guitar shop – but the last time i did that they were sold to me separately out of a bulk package, and i felt that they were a little old, and not as effective. to replace it i did a general google search for guitar polish and the gibson pump as well, and found that you had both, and at the best price. so. thanks!Cary
There are all sorts of guitar humidification systems but most of them only increase humidity. This one works both ways to maintain your (CASED!) guitar at a steady 50% humidity. Iv've been using them for 5 years and can say, with confidence, that they actually work. Most folk don't appreciate how hich the humidity can get in the UK. Frequently 70% and occasionally pushing 90% (next 10 days rage is 68-90%) so you want to reduce humidity, not increase it!. You MUST keep your guitar in its hard case and you MUST keep the case closed AT ALL TIMES as it is "conditioned" to 50% humidity. As soon as you have finished playing, put the guitar back in its case and close it up. Et voila a stable 50% humidity environment for your treasured instrument to live in. I am averaging around 3-4 sets a year but, with my Taylor 916ce tipping the scales at over 4,000, I recon it's worth it!alshubby

This product measures humidity accurately and was compared against a sophisticated measuring device to be within .1 of a percent for humidity. the only "problem" is that it reads the temperature about 1.5-2 degrees different than my other hygrometer which i know is exact. other than that it's perfect!peter10-10

Bought to display humidity in a new hard-shell case holding a 1930s Martin. Worked for a couple weeks, then quit. Exchanged it for another. Worked for a couple weeks, then quit. Bought a fresh battery and still working a month later. Accuracy probably within 10% of a higher cost Accurite humidity/temperature sensor. I guess that's probably good enough when aiming for a 45% to 55% humidity level. I wish I had purchased something else.Dan

A humidifiers is a tool for guitarists in the dry Western US that keep the guitar from drying out. I've used the Planet Waves humidifiers for years. I haven't tried their new series that has the high-efficiency sponge, but here's why I like the Humitars: The high efficiency sponge is large and holds a lot of water, so it can keep moisture inthe case for considerably longer. The flip top is super easy, which makes it quicker and means you can't misplace the top.Tuck
This product is easy to use and easy to check to see when the special sponge needs more water. My forced hot air home heating system has a humidifier system built in, but when its 32 degrees or colder outside (which is 5 months of the year where I live) the inside home humidity only gets as high as 28%, far below the recommended 40 – 45% range for acoustic guitars. I was using the OH-3 Oasis in my acoustic guitar but discovered recently that it has failed at the fabric seam and was slowly leaking water which caused damage to the finish of my guitar. I no longer trust, will not use, or recommend Oasis guitar humidifiers after my experience with their OH-3. I was careful to check to make sure that the Music Nomad sponge wasn't going to leak water before putting the device in the sound hole of my guitar. I checked after two minutes, 20 minutes, 2 hours, 1 day, and it didn't drip any water out onto/into my guitar. I've been checking the sponge daily to see when it needs to be replenished with distilled water and it's been a week so far and the special sponge still has water in it. So far so great!R.
I believe that this is the best sound hole humidifier on the market at present. The small Chinese options are not openable but have a tiny sliver of "oasis" that stuff they use for flower arrangements which dry out pretty much instantly and leak if over filled. The Planet Waves version is smaller and consists of a sponge holder, and a lid and the holder has to be squeezed hard to open. In side is a very ordinary piece of large holed sponge which dries out very quickly. The Guitar Nomad can be refilled without removing it from the guitar simply by opening the hinged lid. The very high density sponge is, thus far, the best I've seen. I've now ordered one for each of my higher value round hole instruments.perry686

Helps alot when traveling in dry climates! My guitars and I live in western WA and are accustomed to fairly constant humidity levels, on the high side. Low humidity is rarely an issue. When I take my guitar(s) to the eastern part of the state, or places drier, this comes in very handy.Amanda
Someone came into these thinking they are for guitars; in fact, they are for smaller instruments. The item is about 5 inches shorter than the actual one intended for guitars (I know this as I have several). This is either a Chinese knockoff or one used for a small instrument. It will still work, but not as well as the real thing. It shouldn't sell for more than $5-6.surpisesam
Simply the easiest way to protect my Taylor guitar from damage due to drying out, especially during the winter months. All I have to do is add water to the green tube, gently wipe off any excess water and put it back inside the sound hole after every practice or gig, then slip the clear plastic sound hole cover over the opening.
