Best Guitar Strings For Acoustic Electric (2024 Update)

These are great strings be not for everyone. They are different in that they aid the upper register of vocals. I've put them on a 00-27 and a J 200; tow very different guitars. The affect is magical for those musicians who want a harp-like tone from their steel strung axe. They have an interesting configuration. From e to E; 12, 16,12,16, 23 W, 30 W. The result is crisp, clear highs and rich lows. These strings are different, but wonderful.goeller2006

I have tried countless strings over the years, and these John Pearse strings are fantastic! You name it, I've tried it. Everything from D'Addario, Elixer, Martin, Gibson, DR, Cleartone and even Dean Markley. Cheap and expensive, I have tried them. All I can say is that these are the best acoustic strings I have tried to date. I just went from a set of Elixers (which I thought were expensive, but good) to these, and these strings won out hands down. As soon as I installed these, my guitar absolutely came ALIVE! It was almost like night and day. Everything was better! Immediately what I noticed was the added volume and projection I was getting, but most of all, it was the tone that absolutely sold me on these. With these strings I heard more woodiness, percussive body, clarity, string to string definition, harmonic overtones, and resonance than any other acoustic strings I have heard to date. The top end also opened up and became even more tactile and transparent. These strings are just more organic, yet highly defined and less sterile than anything else I have heard, and they also have a very balanced output from string to string that is excellent. In no small measure, these strings have been a bit of a revelation. These strings are also very smooth, and I also noticed less finger noise between fretting notes and bar chords as well. However, regarding that smoothness, I also noticed something interesting as well. Just try to follow me with this: These are the first set of John Pearse strings I have ever installed, so I don't know if this is a "one off", but as smooth as they are, I also noticed that the unwound strings have an ever so slightly uneven and wavy finish to them in spots when you shine them in the light. I don't mention this as a negative IN ANY WAY, but just purely as an observation. Besides, I could care less because they sound so darn amazing. Anyway, my point of mentioning this (and this is based purely on conjecture), is I wonder if the barely perceptible finish inconsistencies contribute to the overall tonality of these strings? TBH, I have never seen strings that had this kind of "inconsistency" to their finish before, and I am wondering if this has anything to do with the great tonality of these strings? All the other strings I have bought over the years have been extremely smooth and consistent in their diameter and finish. Again, I don't mention this as a negative in any way because you never feel this while playing in the least. The only time I noticed it was when I looked at them under direct light. These strings sound fantastic, and obviously their specific alloy and construction plays a great part to their sound, but on the other hand, I have never seen strings with this kind of finish before, and yet I have also never been so excited about a set of strings before either. There has to be something to it. The only other thing I can mention is that these strings also have excellent string life as well. I have had these on my acoustic after about a month and a half of use, and they still sound fantastic! Had a pesky b and e string on short scale 000. Solution was it wanted more tension to ring true. The 13 and 18 did it; short scale so they play like lighter strings! The 22w g is awesome, the rest balance nicely. 52 is lite for E but not much of a sacrifice; drop D tuning still do-able. SO HAPPYJohn

These are a great option. I like the wound 3rd string. There's a set of D'Addario with a wound 3rd string I also want to try. These strings are great for archtop guitars that carry a magnetic pickup. I play my Gretsch archtop unplugged every now and then and the flat wound jazz strings just don't have much acoustic presence. I tried the DR Zebras and they are pretty weak when plugged in. These are outstanding strings. For many years I held off using them because of the relatively high price. I had read and heard the general narrative about how much better they felt and how much longer they lasted than conventional strings. I recently purchased a nice mahogany Taylor and it had a factory set of Elixirs on the guitar. Anyway, tired of the "grungy," tacky feel that my strings would often have after only one gig, I tried the Elixirs. I'm now an Elixir convert. They feel terrific, even after 3 or four gigs. When you play guitar outside, your strings decay pretty quickly, unless you've got coated strings for protection. The coating on most coated strings get frayed and buzzy too quickly. A set of Elixirs will last three or four weeks of daily outdoor playing, and virtually never break. I can't imagine how long they'd last if I only played indoors!whowhatwhywhenwherehow

These are a bit pricy, but if you can afford them, I recommend them. To me, the advantages are 1) they last longer before the intonation goes sour and the treble starts to decay 2) they are quieter, meaning less string/finger squeak 3) they seem extremely uniform and predictable. No hot, dull or buzzy strings out of the box, or bad ball end wraps, which I've experienced using other brands.55music

These hold up for a very long time and it's like a mixture of Elixir's and NYXL's. Not too much coating but just enough. It's the only strings I'll ever buy.Michael

These strings are now the standard set I will use on all my guitars. Great sound, set in quickly after install and feel great while playing. The light coating does not affect tone plus they are way less noisy while playing. Regular strings make noise for me with my calloused fingers! A fantastic string at an awesome price!guitarmoon

The headline says it all. It seems like I was spending more time changing strings than I was playing. I unfortunately have acid hands and these have proved themselves worthy. Why these over Elixirs or Cleartone? Price for one. And two, these string feel more like uncoated strings than Cleartone or the Elixir Optiweb which boasts a "natural feel." I thought there was no coating when I first put these on but it's so minuet that I have to feel for the coating. The reason I say Ernie Ball lost my business is twofold. One- they don't coat all of the strings in their titanium line that I'm aware of. Two- Price point. For a few extra bucks, these strings have been on my electric for almost three months and still going strong. I already switched out my Ernie Ball acoustic strings and even asked Daddario about a seven string set.Skinny

I've tried just about every string on the market over the last 20 years. For years, I swore by Martin Phosphor Bronze Custom Lights. My primary guitars were an older sunburst Taylor 210ce (ES1), a Boulder Creek A/E, an Ibanez Jumbo w/ Fishman Sonicore pup and a Martin LXME. I was very happy with the Martin strings, but then I bought a Taylor 214ce (ES2) that came with these Elixir HD strings. I had tried Elixirs a long time ago, thought the sounded "good, but never great." I dig that "new string" brightness for performance and the Elixirs just sounded "pretty decent", but were "pretty decent" for a long time. That is not the case with these new HD Elixirs. They're bright and articulate. I've switched to Elixir HD's on all of my acoustics (except the Martin LXME, still better with Martins). I wouldn't usually bother with reviewing strings, but the other guitarist mentioned my strings were starting to sound a little dead. I knew the Elixirs had been on there for a LONG time, so I logged into my MF account to see when I ordered them. It had been slightly over a year! I'd put over a hundred hours on these strings! I used to restring 2-5 guitars per month…11 guitars, 5 of which are used regularly. If a pack of Martin's lasted for a month, I thought that was great. Technology has improved! I find them great. They hold their tone a long time – And I mean for around three months & sometimes longer. Of course, strings can sound a bit ordinary if you don't tune properly. They also hold their tuning well. I don't find that they suffer from corrosion, even though I live in a very corrosive area on the coast. But of course I play probably every day and usually give them a quick wipe down before returning guitar to it's case, especially while they are new. Not so much after 3 or 4 weeks old. I mostly use them on a Taylor 312ce. I plan to try them on a Yamaha I use for slide too.Brendon

On the back of a promotional appearance in my facebook I bought 2 sets of these strings and so far, I'm pretty impressed. As all acoustic guitar players realise, their instrument can sound wildly different just with different strings on it. So, first impressions was a much fuller and better defined mid range than competing brands. Its in this area that normal bronze strings usually fade quickest and I'm happy to say after many sessions that these phospher bronze strings are holding up well. That aside, the biggest plus is the top end. Does better definition, more volume with less marginal string/fret interferance sound good to you? Well, this is the forte of these strings. My favourite thing is bluegrass picking and these strings fit that bill well. Cutting through Banjo and Mandolin playing volumes is no easy task and I'm happy to say the Elixer HD lite does that very well. Though slightly larger on the top end, they retain that light gauge 'feel' that encourages greater experimentation with a lot less hand cramp that is common with thicker gauges. Overall I'd give these strings 9.5/10 with the .5 mark down only for excessively bright sound that seems to be inherent in Elixer strings anyway on my Maton CW225. If you have a very woody sounding instrument I'm sure these strings will sound especially good. Well done Elixer a really great string.Colin

I’m actually really glad that I’ve been given the opportunity to write this review… I recently had my main Breedlove acoustic looked at by our local tech here in Gibsland Jon, I have been trying different string types for about two months and couldn’t quite get the sound I’ve been chasing. I don’t use the other bright brand that cost a bit because it sheds and I find other things I don’t like about the big E John told me you’ve gotta have a go at these mate… After considerable pressure I brought a set and I still can’t believe how great my guitar sounds every time I play which is every day. The people I work with have all been saying to me that I sound great all of a sudden. So I’ve just found my absolute go to new set of strings. And I buy from Mannys out of principle, because I’m 62 and they’ve been around… Just like me ha ha hahMark M.

I waited a few weeks before submitting this review because I wanted to see if these strings lived up to the promises. I have to say I am not disappointed. They sounded great (as you would expect) when I first restrung my guitar. However here I am, several weeks later and there is no noticeable deterioration in the sound quality, whatsoever. For the past year or so I have been using Ernie Ball Earthwood Phosphor Bronze which are excellent but these are better. Definitely the best strings at the price point lately. They have a thinner or smoother wind than Ernie Ball slinkys or Daddarrio exl and this results in less finger noise and a zingier tone IMO. I'm into clean and classic rock, and I doubt you would like these over the former two names if you were into more modern and metal sounds. It depends on the guitar for me, on my strat I could use just about any strings. My guitars with humbuckers seem more picky, at least to my ears. I prefer these over the other two as far as cheap strings go, and these are often cheaper. Win win. Used to be I would never have preferred Fender strings so either my tastes are changing or these strings have changed over the years.Joelish

Overall: Don't pay any attention to the low price these are great strings. Have used Fender 7250's on all kinds of bass guitars they always sound great and feel good. Years of use have proved quality. I put them on my Jazz bass, my PJ, and my Squire, have used them on Samick, Music man, OLP, and Epiphone basses, all good.Scott

According to a Fender rep, these are what came on the Fender PJ bass I ordered from Musician's Friend. They produce the classic Fender tone I wanted. I eventually replaced them with a set of Fender 7250L (.040, .060, .080, .100) to make it easier to play on the guitar's 9.5" fingerboard radius. I stayed with Fender because of the tone that the 7250M strings produce. The Light's have slightly less oomph on the low end, yet all the tone while the lighter gauge makes for nice melodic work on the high end of things. They were good at first, but after only about 20 minutes, my hands smelled like cheap metal, and the tone had already dulled. These strings made my high quality guitar sound like a tinny, cheap First Act Guitar. I would not recommend these strings to anyone. However, I would highly recommended Elixer nanowebs or polywebs. They are a far superior string. They are worth the extra price and will make any guitar sound great.Paul B.

I've tried all kinds of strings on my Martin guitars. Used coated strings for a while thinking it would be smoother on my fingers and stop the squeal as they slide on the strings.. but that's not cool !!! I'm totally on natural strings ., no boatings., I feel the string more .. I realized I want that !!! I don't get the screech as my ginger slide on the strings except fir when/if I want it . Yep !! I have an acoustic archtop guitar, and found a long time ago that phosphor-bronze strings produce the best tone for my playing style and the instrument I use. I've used a different brand for a long time, but I thought I would give these D'Addario a try. I'm glad I did. These strings produce a nice warm tone, and take a lot of punishment. I have a pretty aggressive rhythm style, and have snapped a lot of strings in my time and had to buy a lot of extra G-strings (it's always the G-string), but these D'Addarios hold up well. I'm very happy with them. and they are around half the price for a 3 set pack of the brand I was previously using, which is why I decided to give them a try.Noah

I have used Elixir strings exclusively for the past 20 years. This is my first purchase of acoustic nanowebs in this gauge (only just started playing acoustic guitar again in recent months and always use polyweb 9's on my electrics). Only just fitted them yesterday (swapping out the poly 10's I had previously fitted – finding them too light for acoustic and going back now with the 12-53 to the maunfacurer's original gauge supplied on the guitar). Plays much better now – almost certainly due to the gauge and sounds good. Time will tell if I like nano's better than poly's on acoustic. Elixirs are comparatively expensive but the trade-off is that they keep their tone a very long time and don't corrode – so full string set changes are infrequent. Occasionally I replace just the plain strings on my electrics when I wear through the plating and/or tire them a bit with bending and vibrato.STEWART C.

I only have pros, no cons!!! I love Elixir strings!!! I've been using them for years!!! I first heard about them from a good friend of mine, Tom Hemby. He is a 30+ year session player and producer in Nashville Tennessee. I'm not a pro like him, just a weekend warrior, but honestly these strings have been a Godsend for me!!! I HATE to change strings!!! I'm using the word about strings!!! Anyway, I love the sound of NEW strings but hate to have to stop and change them all the time! My hands sweat profusely so I always have dead strings. Tom told me that if I started using Elixir strings that problem would no longer be an issue and he was right! I use the Extra Lights .010 -.047 Nanoweb set on my Blueridge BR-163 CE. One of the things I didn't realize was that the coating cuts down on the noise, the string squeak when I change chords or when I'm playing a lead. With un-coated strings it's very irritating! So, my strings are quieter, they last longer, they sound bright all the time!!! I'm diggin these strings! All I can say is if you aren't using them, you should be, give your audience a break from the squeak, squeak squeak, of your strings during your performances, it's very distracting from the songs and your playing ability!!! I tell everybody I know that plays or is starting to learn, just go ahead and buy yourself some GOOD strings, it's the foundation of your sound!!! NO MORE SQUEAKING AND THEY LAST A LONG LONG TIME!!! The main reason I purchased this instrument was to have the ability to travel, play outside in the present climate. It's almost a disposable guitar. Not a negative against the instrument. I am not going to bring my Strat or Yamaha out to the fire, by the river or sitting on the porch during a rainstorm. Worth every dollar and every dollar I did not have to spend. I have been using Martin strings for 50 years. I didn't think they could improve, but this latest version is even better than previous ones. The silk is a nice added protection for the bridge plate on my 50 year old guitar, also. The shipping from Musicians Friend was unbelievably fast.Gary

Great strings that last a really long time. I tend to like a "deader" sound, and these loosen up really nicely. There is a clean brightness without losing any low end, but as it ages, it sounds really natural, if that makes sense.WILL

These are the slickest, most comfortable strings. I bought them to put on a PRS Angelus SE and be able to do those David Gilmore bends on an acoustic. For that, they are awesome. Bendiest, easy to slide acoustic strings I have ever tried. Great for all those single note lead lines. The bass strings are also heavy enough to still give some oomph. The problem is when you come out of those lead lines to do any rhythmic strumming-the tone is bright, brash, tinny and very G forward. I want to like these strings for their play-ability and keep trying them to see if they'll break in, but always leave disappointed. For reference, my PRS is already a little brighter in a Taylor sort of way than my other guitars. I usually play Santa Cruz Low Tension Parabolics on my Santa Cruz OM, and Martin Life Span on my Martin 0015. The brashness is muted a little if amplified.Jonah

Bought these as replacements on my Taylor guitar. I was surprised at the quality of the strings, the incredible tone and that they didn't stretch A LOT when new (meaning I didn't have to retune after every song…I let the rest for about 4 hours and tune them up before performing). This was a great price on my favorite strings. Shipping was very fast too. Unfortunately, "new" does not mean the same as"fresh" and I have now learned the difference. These do seem to be genuine Elixers, but a few problems which led to broken strings may indicate that these were either sitting on a shelf for a very long time or else exposed to moisture. Normally, brand new strings will be very springy when you first take them out of the sleeve. They generally will uncoil into a straight line, but every single one of these maintained a strong curl or twist in it. But that alone was not a problem for me. The strings installed normally and tuned well, but the tonal quality seemed a little sub-par compared to what I was used too. Still, it's possible I was just imagining that. The strings were fine for a month. Held there notes as well as any, and the tone was at least decent, though I still felt it was missing something. But after one month I had the B string break. I usually keep Elixer strings for 6 months before they finally lose their great tone and I replace them, and because I wind plenty of extra string around the posts, I haven't had a string break on me in over 8 years. Breaking one now pretty much confirmed my earlier suspicions. I went ahead and replaced all 6 strings with the next set, but 2 weeks later and the high E string broke on me. For now I'm borrowing the high E from the final set, but the first chance I get I will be replacing every string with a new, fresh set from a local music store. I don't think I'll buy strings online again because of this apparent problem of freshness.jaredlang85

These strings have been a lifesaver for me. My hands aren't acidic and I easily get a year from them before needing to restring. I use the same brand on my PRS electric, too. (10's). I gig weekly in our church worship band so I prefer a string that holds tone and these just deliver. Super product! Long lasting, great sound. I went to my girlfriends sisters home for Xmas and a few guys got a some guitars out and we played some rock, country and bluegrass on Elixers strung on acoustic instruments. They claimed the strings were three years old. They sounded quite good for their age. After seeing a John Paul Jones interview where he said Elixers were all he used. I already used them but his opinion completely sold me. I even bought an Elixer tee shirt. I use them on all my guitars and mandolins. I won't settle for anything else.
